Children are up and running! Leamington based charity, Kids Run Free, invites all children from toddlers to teenagers to join them in local parks every first Saturday of the month. With a mission to create fun, sustainable running opportunities and ignite children’s passion for sport, the charity hopes to introduce children to the joy of running and hopefully inspire them to pursue sport as part of a healthy lifestyle. As parents, we all want the best for our children and try to do everything possible to help them grow into healthy, happy adults. However, keeping our children active is becoming more of a challenge nowadays with children spending more time indoors as a consequence of modern life. Kids Run Free is a great way to introduce your children to fun activities that keep them healthy. These events are for all children, for those who do it just for fun to those who are more competitive. Join a Kids Run Free event near you - at Newbold Comyn Park in Leamington Spa, The Big Meadow in Bidford-on-Avon and in Nuneaton and Bedworth in north Warwickshire. FAMILY LEGAL PROBLEMS? NoVate Direct Legal Solutions can help There are times when many of us may face legal problems in our family life. These can include: •

Divorce (the process or financial issues)

Splitting up from an ex partner and owning property together

Children Issues – contact/residence disagreements in respect of your children

If your children are at risk of harm

You may have previously been eligible for legal aid; it is unlikely this would be the case today as a result of Government legal aid cuts. The Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB) can assist but they are swamped owing to the legal aid cuts and not all advisors are legally trained. When it comes to your family, you need to make sure you get the best, most financially efficient legal advice and assistance possible and that is where NoVate can help.

4

NoVate can provide advice and assistance directly from barristers, at a fixed price so you always know where you are financially. Assistance can range from writing letters on your behalf to assisting with letters that you send on your own behalf. Crucially, whilst there are many who are more than capable of conducting litigation on their own, when it comes to court nerves can take over. NoVate can provide a barrister at a fixed fee (no hourly rates) to conduct the difficult hearings on your behalf, not only providing legal expertise but support and expert advocacy. If your case requires a solicitor, NoVate can recommend the most affordable solicitor to suit your needs. Can you afford, when it comes to your family, not to have the best representation? You can decide who to instruct and on what terms, giving you flexibility to suit your needs; at a fee you can control. For more information: www.novatedirectlegalsolutions.com or call 0845 201 0160. Your query will be responded to within 24 hours.

Clubs & Classes A great year for youth theatre group The Drama Club delivers high quality, weekly drama workshops in a fun, safe and stimulating environment for children between the ages of 7 and 16 in and around Stratford-upon-Avon. Founded in September 2013, it is run by industry professionals with an extensive knowledge of theatre and performance, as well as theatre specifically for young people. “Our first year was so busy but really exciting” says Sarah Plowright, director of The Drama Club. “In the junior groups (ages 7-11) we saw brave, imaginative little actors learning lots of new skills, ranging from voice work and drama games to improvisation and script work. The seniors (ages 12-16) pushed and challenged themselves beyond expectation. They worked hard at their stage combat which was then incorporated into scenes for The Drama Club Summer Show.” The Drama Club knows that having fun is also a serious business. The weekly sessions help children acquire better concentration and memory, a richer vocabulary, higher self-esteem and a whole range of social and creative attributes that can make all the difference to their confidence, independence and happiness. Each week students engage in theatre games, drama skills, movement, voice and improvisation, script work, stage combat and performance. The Drama Club runs during term time only in Stratford-upon-Avon and Alcester. A free taster session is offered to all new starters. Babies

Reflexology for soothing crying babies Sally Earlam FMAR. BSc. RN. PGCE, Association of Reflexologists – Maternity Specialist All babies cry, and some cry a lot. This can be distressing and on occasions frustrating for all concerned. Sometimes it is easy to work out why babies are crying, for example hunger, dirty nappy, wind or if they are tired. However, sometimes there appears to be no apparent reason and nothing seems to soothe them. But an unpublished study from Denmark suggests that some simple reflexology moves on the feet of your baby may help reduce those screaming fits. Reflexology for babies uses massage strokes over areas of the feet and only requires gentle pressure. Lie the baby down, face up and make this a fun time with lots of smiles. You could even sing nursery rhymes to your baby as you work on their feet. Try and do these moves for 5 minutes every day when your baby is calm. Work on one foot at a time, use one hand to hold each foot and the other one to make the following actions: 1. On the bottom of each foot, use your thumb to make circular movements, working in a clockwise direction in the middle of foot - this mimics the direction the digestive system works in the body. 2. Repeat the same move over the heel area. 3. Use your thumb to gently push up from the base of each toe, up to the very tops of the toe. 4. Place your thumb in the centre of the foot and gently press in and hold for about 10 seconds. These moves can also be carried out in the same manner on the hands. During a screaming fit, try picking your baby up and placing him over your shoulder. Use one hand to support the baby and the other hand to perform the reflexology moves described on both hands and feet.

Exciting children’s craft entertainment provider Perfect for weddings and parties. Event crèche service.

Having a newborn baby also can take its toll on you as a parent, so why not try some reflexology yourself. It is particularly beneficial in giving you ‘me time’ after the birth of your baby and can offer many benefits to you, aiming to optimise your health, aid relaxation, de-stress and improve the quality of sleep in post-natal women. The Association of Reflexologists has an excellent website full of useful information, including a ‘find a reflexologist’ service, where you can put in your postcode and find a well-trained and insured reflexologist local to you. There are also interactive foot and hand maps and videos of real clients’ experiences.

Education Personal tuition and foreign language workshops Arden Tutoring was established in 2013 by Kristy Elliott with the aim of raising attainment in English through personal tuition at all levels, and has since expanded to cover a wide range of subjects, including Modern Foreign Languages, Mathematics, Sciences, Drama and Social Sciences. The team comprises dedicated tutors who are enthusiastic about their subject, and are passionate about helping individual students to realise their potential. Uniquely, the sole focus of Arden Tutoring is on one-to-one tuition, believing fundamentally that this level of intervention best advantages the pupil, augmenting in the most effectual way possible the other aspects of their education. Arden’s intention is not only to help the individual to improve academic attainment, but also to better prepare them for further study by developing skills essential to the independent learner. Through building a professional rapport with the tutors, pupils are able to grow in the knowledge that they are taking much more away from their sessions than simply reaching the next academic milestone. Two of the most common barriers to attainment, particularly at KS2, are a difficulty in comprehending the mechanics of English, as well as struggling to summon the confidence to participate academically. From November, Arden will be offering Beginners’ French and Spanish Courses and Drama Workshops with the intention of developing language skills and self-confidence respectively. The advantages of learning an additional language are endless, and Arden seeks to extend these advantages to pupils at a crucial moment in their education. Furthermore, as confidence and self-belief are essential to performing well academically, our fun and challenging weekly drama workshops will prioritise the development of these skills. Places are limited so book today. You can find out more by contacting Kristy Elliott on 01926 289341 or by visiting www.ardentutoring.co.uk

All children to start learning a language at primary school As of this term, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek. At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language. According to the Department for Education’s (DfE) programme of study: “A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.” With English teenagers scoring lowest for foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages. Days Out Compton Verney

Heritage Motor Centre

Wet and wintry days out! After a super summer, winter is well and truly here! The heating is on, children are having porridge for breakfast and it’s virtually dark before they’ve even got home from school. But there’s no need for the family to hibernate as there are lots of fabulous indoor attractions in Warwickshire waiting to be explored on a cold, wet, wintry day. The Heritage Motor Centre at Gaydon has a huge collection of classic British cars and is a great place for all the family. Children can pick up a sheet with ideas of what to see and do, go on the search for cat’s eyes, explore The Time Road and sit in some old fashioned cars! Compton Verney, 7 miles east of Stratford-upon-Avon, has family backpacks, enabling children and their parents to explore the art gallery’s collections through a range of exciting activities. The Herbert Art Gallery in Coventry is also a great place to visit on a rainy day. There’s a guide full of ideas for families as well as practical information. The nearby Coventry Transport Museum also offers a fun day out for all the family.

As well as great gardens to run around in and explore, there’s lots to see and do indoors at our local National Trust properties at Coughton, Charlecote, Upton, Packwood and Baddesley, from children’s trails to dressing up. The houses have reduced opening hours in the winter so check before visiting. Hatton Adventure World also offers both outdoor and indoor fun. As well as visiting its animals and exploring outdoors, it has a stunning indoor play area with spectacular slides which means that parents can join in too! The Play Farm in Leamington Spa and Cheeky Chimps in Warwick are also great soft play venues where you can enjoy a cup of tea while the children have lots of fun. For interactive, indoor fun, visit The MAD Museum in Stratford-uponAvon. Also in or near Stratford, visit one of the five Shakespeare Houses. To really warm up, step inside Stratford Butterfly Farm. Alternatively, wrap the children up, put them in waterproofs and wellies and see who can find the biggest puddle to splash in! Come rain or shine, there’s plenty for families to do this winter in Warwickshire!

My daughters and I recently visited the Heritage Motor Centre in Gaydon. As well as being home to the world’s largest collection of British Cars and a mecca for serious car aficionados, it’s a great place for a family day out. As we drove down the long driveway towards the impressive building, the girls quickly spotted the outdoor play area on the left hand side and logged its location for later! Inside the museum, we found ourselves surrounded by a phenomenal number of cars. In the reception area, you can pick up a map as well as some cards with ideas of things to see and do for children. You can also swap your toddler’s buggy for a push around car – much to the disappointment of my 8 and 6 year olds who desperately wanted to be able to squeeze into one!

Our Day Out at The Heritage Motor Centre 10

Armed with clipboards and torches for the cat’s eyes trail, we decided to work our way around the museum by looking for the black cats dotted amongst the cars. Each cat was numbered and the girls had to shine the torch at its eyes and mark down what colour they were, totalling the colours up at the end. We walked along the road safety exhibit which ended in a short DVD, then we designed our own ‘flower power’ minis using magnetic stickers and retold the story of Mr

Gumpy’s Motor Car using the animal props provided in the story suitcase. Before we took the glass lift (a treat in itself for children!) up to the first floor to the Junction 12 Café, we spotted famous, fabulous and funny cars in the Corgi Collection, from the Scooby Doo camper van to Del Boy’s Robin Reliant. After lunch we followed the Time Road from start to finish which took us from the late 1800s to the 2000s, showing us how cars have changed over time, as well as other key developments in the history of roads and motoring. At the start of Time Road, there are two cars which you can get into and ‘drive’. The girls loved these cars and spent a long time going on lots of imaginative trips! From quirky to classic, modest to impressive, the Heritage Motor Centre is home to cars which appeal to all ages. I couldn’t help but smile when I looked inside Dr Emmett Brown’s time travelling DeLorean! We had a great day and recharged our batteries with an ice-cream from the café before heading outside to the play area until it was time to go home. www.heritage-motor-centre.co.uk

Christmas Shop locally this Christmas and give more than just presents… By Families North Wales Shropshire Borders editor Sal Jefford

the local economy, helping to improve local prosperity and create jobs.

Christmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared, there’s shopping to be done! The big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can rarely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas musthaves.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. This year’s Small Business Saturday UK takes place on Saturday 6th December.

But what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? The products and services that small businesses can excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience. Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your community’s economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally, and on and on. This is money going back into

It’s a family friendly event, with over 100 stalls and a ‘Frozen’ Grotto! Free parking. £3.50 entry on the door (accompanied under 16s free). www.craftshoppingexperience.co.uk

The Christmas Truce

Royal Shakespeare Theatre, Stratford-upon-Avon CV37 6BB Sat 29 Nov-Sat 31 Jan December 1914. As families across Europe gather to celebrate Christmas, a generation of young men find themselves far away from their loved ones in the trenches of the Western Front. There they face a world seemingly devoid of any peace or goodwill. But on Christmas Eve 1914, as the men of the Warwickshire Regiment shelter in their trenches, something astonishing happens. Across no-man’s land they hear music. The German soldiers are singing Christmas carols; the same carols their families are listening to, hundreds of miles away in Birmingham, Warwick and Stratfordupon-Avon. Leaving their trenches, carrying only their courage and their humanity, they go to meet

12

their enemies; not to fight, but talk, to exchange gifts, to celebrate Christmas. And the next day, together, they play an unforgettable game of football. Inspired by real events of exactly 100 years ago, RSC Deputy Artistic Director Erica Whyman directs Phil Porter’s uplifting new play for families that celebrates a remarkable Christmas story.
