Sharing Stories of the Great War Earlier this year, the Royal Shakespeare Company invited local people to share their stories, memories and artefacts that linked their family to the First World War. The event was held as part of the activity remembering the centenary of the First World War and the RSC’s new winter season production of The Christmas Truce, a new play for families marking one of the most extraordinary events of the First World War. People came along and shared stories, photographs, letters and artefacts to help build a picture of local connections to those who fought, and those who stayed at home, 100 years ago. The show’s creative team, including the director Erica Whyman and writer Phil Porter, were also there and Erica said of the day, ‘It’s a story that is deeply rooted in local history, so we both really wanted to hear from people from the area who had something to tell us about their family’s connection with the First World War and The Royal Warwickshire Regiment. We can’t promise that these stories will make their way into the play, but they have certainly helped us in shaping it.’ The Christmas Truce opens on 29 November. Mums in Business Do you have any specific qualifications? When I started the business I had sixteen years’ teaching experience in the classroom as well as management responsibilities as a deputy head teacher, and so I knew the importance of high quality provision that parents and educators trusted.

What is the best bit about what you do? I have all the joyful aspects of teaching – working with a wide variety of children, parents and establishments, making music accessible to all, witnessing the positive effect of music, and developing exciting classes to really inspire children’s imaginations. But I am my own boss and I have been able to grow my business to suit my family’s needs. Once my girls started school, I was able to take on more work and I’m now in the exciting position of being able to offer this same flexibility to my new Calypso Kids teachers who have joined the Calypso Kids team this September.

How do you fit work around family life? Emmajane Roberts – Founder of Calypso Kids

What is Calypso Kids and when did you set up the company? I founded Calypso Kids Ltd in 2010 to provide quality music and arts education both in the community with my preschool classes as well as in schools, nurseries and preschools. Relocating from London to Warwickshire enabled me to finance the business completely. Initially, I bought three different instruments - maracas, bells and drums - 30 of each so that the children AND their grownup could play together. I booked an hour at Townsend Hall in Shipston-on-Stour and gave out flyers. My mum even went into the high street to invite people to the class! We now run five pre-school classes, still from Townsend Hall, provide the music curriculum in two local schools, as well as regular classes for three nurseries and have over 15 sets of different instruments.

What made you decide to set up your own business? After becoming a parent, I returned to work part-time. One aspect of my job as deputy head was to release the class teachers and, without fail, music was the subject I was asked to teach. With the arrival of my second daughter, I wanted to balance my love of teaching, leadership and management skills with greater quality time with my young family. In my experience there seemed a gap in the market to provide regular mixed aged classes with a greater emphasis on exploring the instruments. Having enough quality instruments for all the children to explore and play was also a priority.

Mums and Dads !!!

Are you always having to sacrifice holidays, wages and promotion, because you’re always juggling work with being a parent ??

I have incredible work from home opportunities. Flexible hours to suit, no boss, no staff, no targets

I am fortunate that my business coincides with the school day and terms. My classes are planned to enable me to take my girls to school and collect them at the end of their school day. I do spend time in the evenings after their bedtime, making sure that all the administration is up to date but it doesn’t compare to my workload when I was a full-time deputy head teacher.

What advice would you give other mums looking to work for themselves? Think very carefully about your own skills; what you are good at and what you are passionate about. You have to strive to be better than your competitors to be successful. Having been an employee for all my working life, I had to learn about running a business – tax, insurance, licences for various new things – so make sure you invest in trusted advice. Most importantly, be brave and take the leap into the unknown. See the Calypso Kids advert on page 11

Education Your school’s own puppy! A non-school uniform day, a blindfold lesson, filling a jam jar with loose change – these are just a few ways which your school can raise funds to sponsor or name its very own guide dog puppy. A name is the first gift that a guide dog puppy receives and your school can become part of their life-changing story. Raise £300 for Guide Dogs and sponsor a puppy, following its unique journey as it moves through the early stages of training. If you wish to name your very own puppy, the target is £1,500. In return, Guide Dogs will send you photographs, a certificate, and you will even get to meet your special puppy.

Your school can name and meet their very own guide dog puppy

All schools who participate in the appeal will be offered their very own personalised tour of the Guide Dog Training Centre in Leamington Spa or the Breeding Centre, which is just out of town. Southam College earlier this year raised over £3,600 for Guide Dogs and are choosing the name of their puppy that they will get to meet in the autumn term. Join Southam College and other local schools, and help raise funds. By supporting Guide Dogs you will be giving a child or adult who is blind or partially sighted a brighter future. Guide Dogs is a charity which receives no government funding. It costs over £5,000 to breed and puppy walk each guide dog puppy, and the life time cost of a guide dog is £50,000. Launch of free school meals for all infants From September all Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 children will be entitled to a free and healthy lunch at school. According to Schools Minister, David Laws, free school meals encourage healthy eating and their pilots have shown that ‘children in schools that offer universal free school meals are academically months ahead of their peers.’ The Warwickshire menu offers a great variety of dishes, including roast beef and Yorkshire pudding, chicken pie, pork loin steak and apple sauce, and cauliflower and broccoli bake. Warwickshire County Council’s caterers have worked closely with the Soil Association’s Food for Life project in creating the menu, achieving a silver catering mark. This guarantees that the menus used in Warwickshire schools use a selection of local, seasonal and organic ingredients, are free from endangered fish, and include meat and dairy products from farms with good standards of animal welfare. For more information about the menu and where the food comes from visit www.warwickshire.gov.uk/schoolmeals

Own Books Julie de Bastion, from Henley-in-Arden, has set up an innovative book recycling scheme at a number of Warwickshire schools and nurseries and is hoping that more will join the project this autumn. Own Books aims to encourage young children to develop an early love of books and reading through choosing and having their own books at home. The project relies on donations of used books which are then cleaned and labelled and taken to the participating schools where children can choose one or two a week to take home for themselves. There will be an Own Books information stand at the Warwick Words Festival on Saturday 4 October at the Warwick Museum in the market square and the opportunity to donate books.

Deciding on after-school study? With the new school year starting, many parents start to look for things which will help their child with their maths and English studies at school. There are many alternatives available, including after-school classes and tutors. Jasbir Mann runs First Class Learning tuition centres in Leamington Spa, Kenilworth and Balsall Common. Here he gives us some tips to help you get the right help for your child. “Firstly anything you do must be personalised, taking into account the learning needs and style of the individual child. Any study or revision programme must be put together with your child in mind. Secondly, the study programme must be systematic. Maths and English are both skill-based subjects and skills can only be mastered through practice. This practice must be part of a structured programme so that your child can recognise his or her own achievement. Thirdly, the work must be relevant. Any course of study must be designed to meet the learning outcomes of the National Curriculum. This could involve specific exam revision, ongoing support or both. In any case it must start addressing the work studied at school and allow the child to demonstrate competence in those areas tested at school. The good news is that First Class Learning meets all three of these essential requirements. Its structured yet flexible programmes, designed for children in the UK, will help your child to achieve at school and grow in confidence.” You can find out more by contacting Jasbir Mann on 01926 259644 www.firstclasslearning.co.uk

Clubs and Classes Baby Signing “more” Help your baby communicate before they can talk

Contact 01789 415591 www.singandsign.co.uk pippajenkins@singandsign.co.uk facebook.com/singandsignsouthwarks

“please”

Developed with the help of Speech and Language professionals and recommended by Sure Start, Sing and Sign is Britain’s longest running and best loved baby signing programme. Pippa Jenkins has been running Sing and Sign classes in Warwickshire for 9 years.

Babies use all kinds of signs and gestures as a natural part of learning to talk. Encouraging your baby with extra signs like ‘milk’, ‘more’, ‘change nappy’ or ‘tired’ will help your baby communicate! Your baby will recognise important words sooner and can use the signs to “talk” to you before speech. You only need to learn a few signs to make a significant difference in your baby’s ability to communicate. As baby learns to talk, the signs will naturally stop. You can lessen frustration, enrich language learning and have a lot of fun with it too.

Why it’s important for children to do after school activities By Susan Tomlinson Whether or not you reckon you might be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the pluses for after school clubs. From ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child. And the best thing about them is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill. For a start, after school clubs give children the chance to let off steam outside of the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, children don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask. That’s why an alternative to the three R’s can be hugely rewarding.

Each Sing and Sign class includes a singing and signing session and plenty of social time. The teacher uses many signs with words in action songs and rhymes using pictures, puppets and props to inspire your baby’s attention and illustrate the signs. Teaching through music has proved a great way to learn and musical activities can also help stimulate your baby’s language development, memory and attention skills. Babies love routine which is why each class follows a winning format that babies quickly become familiar with. Sing and Sign is great fun and we are sure you will agree!

Case Study Local mum, Lynne Gougeon, took both her children to Pippa’s Sing and Sign classes when they were each 7 months old. Together, they all really enjoyed the classes and experienced enormous benefits. As well as having fun singing and signing together daily at home, Lynne was delighted to be able to understand her children’s thoughts and needs much earlier than she feels would have been possible otherwise and believes that it reduced her daughter Amélie’s frustration (and screaming), bringing a little more harmony to the house! Lynne believes that the classes have helped her children’s speech develop quickly and clearly as each word is spoken when signed, at the same time helping them to understand a second language as their father signed and spoke French whilst she signed and spoke English. “I have no hesitation in saying it is the best class we have done with the children.”

As clinical psychologist Dr Julie Fraser, puts it: “It’s an opportunity for kids to explore different talents. Not everyone is brilliant at academic subjects and it’s a chance for your kids to shine outside of the classroom.” She adds: “Learning a new skill can also affect what happens in school – kids feel more confident and able to try new tasks.” Certainly all the research shows this to be the case. Every leading study into extra curricular activities demonstrates that academic grades actually improve when children participate

Action packed, physical challenges for children aged 4-7. www.tumbletots.com/warwick

There’s so many to choose from, it’s tempting to try them all but it’s also important not to overburden children with too many activities. Frantically driving from one after school club to the next seems to be missing the point. New skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is surely the fun factor. “It’s brilliant for developing social skills, dealing with new environments, talking to different adults and mixing with different children,” says Dr Fraser. “But best of all, after school clubs are confidence building.” Team sports like football, rugby, and netball are not only brilliant for keeping children active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. But for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Woodcraft Folk, Brownies and Scouts. Learning a musical instrument is great for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are great for shy

Calypso Kids Pre-school Music Classes for children aged 6 months - 4 years Classes are held at Townsend Hall, Sheep Street, Shipston on Stour CV36 4AE Wednesdays at 9.20am, 10.15am & 11.00am Fridays at 10.00am & 11.00am What’s in the lilly pad today? £3.50 per class when paying for a half-term block in advance or £4.50 a class to pay-as-you-play. After that, the trick is to stay involved. “It’s important to talk with the teacher, find out how they work and show an interest in the class,” says Dr Fraser. “That way you can be sure your child really is enjoying the club, and you will begin to watch them flourish and grow.”
