Top marks for tutoring academy It’s been an exciting year so far for Gloucestershirebased 11+ Tutoring Academy. Letts published the Academy’s CEM Style 11+ Test Papers and Booster Book. Now they have been nominated as a UK finalist for “Private Tutoring Company of the Year” and “Private Tuition Centre Operator”, at the Education Investor Awards in 2015. The 11+ Academy is delighted to announce that it is opening a centre in Stratford-upon-Avon (centre to be confirmed) where it will be able to deliver its popular and successful Durham CEM 11+ Course. The Year 4 course builds confidence in English and maths for school, as well as starting to work through how to approach non-verbal reasoning for the respective age group. Students are given time to ensure that they master the foundations before moving onto the more challenging topics. According to Kathryn McMahon, of 11+ Tutoring Academy, many pupils improve and will go up in their maths sets as a result of the tuition and practice during the course. Kathryn explains: “We believe in building solid foundations. Our courses prepare pupils for the new 11+ exam, and also for their move to secondary school due to the content covered in the sessions. During the course, strong friendships are built and pupils enjoy attending the tuition sessions. We are dedicated to providing pupils with the best opportunity to pass their 11+ exam, through our comprehensive syllabus, high quality group and 1 to 1 tuition, and mock exams. “

FCA appeals for new carers in Warwickshire to find room to foster One of the Midlands’ leading independent fostering agencies has launched a new recruitment campaign to address the shortage of foster carers across Warwickshire. Called ‘Finding Room to Foster’, the campaign draws on the moments when carers from Foster Care Associates (FCA) found that unique time in their life to make the important decision to foster - making room both emotionally and physically in their home. FCA has developed a specialist step-down placement scheme. Step-down fostering offers young people in or at risk of entering residential care the chance to live in a stable, nurturing foster family placement. Working closely with local authorities, the scheme gives children and young people with a history of placement breakdowns a second chance at family life. For more information on becoming a foster carer with FCA call 0800 022 4012 or visit www.thefca.co.uk

We love to read

More kids than ever are reading for pleasure. Former Children’s Laureate, Malorie Blackman has said she is “delighted” at figures released by the National Literacy Trust that show that increasing numbers of UK schoolchildren are choosing to read in their spare time and are developing a love of books as a result.
Back to school…. the dreaded head lice problem By Marion Burns An unfortunate consequence of returning to school is the risk of these little “ahems”!
The signs
Constant itching, especially nape of neck and over ears (lice love dark places). Remember that anybody can get head lice so don’t forget to look for symptoms on the rest of the family too!
What to look for
Nits (eggs) are always oval shaped and greyish white, viable nits are usually near to the scalp. Head lice are reddish brown wingless insects.
Boys’ cuts
Some schools specify off the collar haircuts which implies an overall short cut and this in itself can shorten the risk of infestation. Long surfer dude styles on boys carry the same risk as girls’ hair as the hair is more likely to come into contact with other infested hair.
How to eliminate them
It’s virtually impossible to remove all lice from dry hair as they move so quickly but if you dampen hair and apply lots of conditioner, this stops them in their tracks… literally. Then, with a fine tooth comb, section by section, try and remove all of the nits. Have a bowl of hot water handy to dip comb into to remove the caught nits. Wipe the comb and continue. This is essential to make sure you have got all the crawlies. Even if you are using a nit solution you must comb as well. Nits lay approximately 10 eggs a day so an infestation can take hold very quickly.
Girls
The problem is elevated due to the amount of hair girls generally have i.e. long or bobbed. Even though some hair can be tied back or plaited (highly recommended), girls tend to huddle together and touch heads, it only takes one stray strand for the lice to travel. They cannot jump. Marion Burns is the co-owner of Raspberry Children’s Hair Salon in Leamington Spa and the UK’s Children’s Hair Expert. www.raspberryhair.co.uk

LoveBallet dances its way to success In May, over 130 pupils from the LoveBallet Dance Company took examinations in Ballet, Tap or Modern and the school was delighted to maintain its 100% pass rate with a wonderful set of results. The grades are Ofqual registered and a large number of LoveBallet pupils were awarded Merits and Distinctions, all credit to their very hard work and dedicated teachers. As pupils now settle and begin to work and learn the new challenges of their next grades, the school begins preparations for its 2016 Charity Show, in which all pupils are invited to take part. However, before that, there are several auditions to prepare some pupils for, including the Royal Ballet School, Elmhurst, BBO Scholars and English Youth Ballet. Some of the pupils have already successfully auditioned and have been dancing this summer with the English Youth Ballet which is a fantastic experience and opportunity for them. Drama queens? How role play can boost your child’s development by Sacha Bury and Sarah Grimsdick You may have heard that the huge, alternative play centre ‘Kidzania’ has opened for business recently in Westfield, London. Gone are the ball pits, cushioned poles and wavy slides of the standard play centre, and in their place an entire miniature town where children can act out their adult fantasies in a safe, controlled environment. The fact that children love role play will come as no surprise to any parent. We’ve all bought imaginary ice creams from our little one’s shop, and been placed in jail by a pint sized policeman. But did you know that they’re also meeting some crucial developmental goals too? If you live with a little drama queen (or king), here’s why you should most definitely encourage their love of role play and imagination.
The science behind the benefits of role playing Pretend play has long been thought the holy grail of early years’ development. Research into the benefits of imaginative play means that there is rarely a nursery or playgroup in the country that doesn’t have a ‘home corner’ for the children to enjoy. However, role playing has amazing benefits for older children too.
Back in 1998, Doris Bergen conducted some in depth research into the ages of children and when they could get the most out of role play. She found that, “…pretence plays a vital role in young children’s lives and that the period of its salience extends through the primary school years as well.”
others, which is a central element to outstanding social skills.
Cognitive development
As part of their make believe play, children will be called upon to recall their past experiences and to act accordingly in the game. This might be going to the supermarket with Mum, taking a pet to the vet or re-enacting something they’ve seen on TV. Through this, children will have to solve problems about what happens next, draw their own conclusions about the right way to act and will learn about others’ experiences of similar situations too. When children get involved in role play together, you can see for yourself all the processes they have to go through to initiate and engage in play together. From planning and negotiation to improvisation and turn taking, your child will be learning so much more than you realise every time they participate in pretend play.
Other researchers have suggested correlations between pretend play and academic success. Some have suggested that because so much of school success depends on getting along with peers and adults, role play can help children of all ages to achieve better relationships, and therefore get on better in school (Smilansky and Shefatya, 1990). Being able to act out their emotions in a safe environment allows children to learn what it takes to be a good person, and how to get along with different people in different situations. It also allows them to gauge what they are good at, helping them to assess themselves as an individual and to discover their likes and dislikes.
Developmental goals can be met through pretend play
As well as allowing your child to emotionally rebalance themselves, pretend play has been shown to have far reaching developmental benefits too. These include:
Communication skills
Pretend play involves using both verbal and nonverbal communication, in which the child can replay words they have heard and the actions they’ve seen others using in the game with their peers. As well as practicing their own communication skills, they’ll need to listen and collaborate with the other children in the group, and work as a team to achieve the goal of the game.
Social skills
Role play is all about being social. The restrictions of reality are broken, and children are allowed to be someone or something else for a while. When children play together in a role playing situation, they must negotiate roles, agree terms and control impulses so they can all get along. They also learn how to respect the opinions and decisions of
6
Helping your child with role play
As much as we can invest in play kitchens, dressing up clothes and other role play props for children at home, nothing really comes close to the experience of role playing in the company of other children their age. Kidzania offers a London based potential for an exciting day of role play, and there are no adults allowed! Of course, if London is a bit far away for you, you’ll be pleased to know that a slimmed down yet just as valuable facility has recently opened in Stratford-upon-Avon. Jungle Town is an amazing, innovative play experience for children where their imaginations can really go wild! Children can run the shop, serve in the café, shop in the grocery store and even visit the mayor, Roary the Lion, in his house. Check out the website at www.jungletown.co.uk for more information on this innovative play centre for children of all ages. Role play is a crucial component of a healthy play structure for any child, and whether they do it at home, at school or in one of these brilliant new play centres, the important thing is to encourage it to happen. Get involved with your child’s imagination, and see if both they and you can learn something new. Sacha Bury and Sarah Grimsdick are co-directors of Jungle Town which is based at Stratford Garden Centre. www.jungletown.co.uk

E H T C RG R x Y S R S N Learning Outdoors with the Meek Family
I’m a firm believer that spending time as a family is just as important to our children’s education as being at school so this book really appealed to me. Tim and Kerry Meeks, both teachers, are such strong advocates of informal outdoor learning that they took their two daughters out of school and went on a year-long EdVenture with them around the UK.
This book is a fantastic collection of ideas to help you support and enhance your children’s formal schooling. There are 52 EdVentures which are divided into six categories. Each activity has three sections to help you ‘Before you go’, ‘While you are there’ and ‘When you get back’, and there are plenty of tips and suggestions to develop enquiring minds and encourage different way of learning. Eye-catching, well laid out, easy to read, and ideal for parents to dip in and out of, this book is guaranteed to make you look at family days out from a different perspective. Brilliant!

Clubs and classes We might not all be able to afford much but there’s no doubt a couple of well-chosen activities can be great for areas that the school can’t cover.
What age is best to start classes?
Which activities to choose? Clubs and classes can offer valuable advantages to our children – but where do you start? By Sally J. Hall Some children need to have plenty going on to stop getting bored and parents are aware of the value of after-school clubs to ensure their children are stimulated. With a vast range on offer, it can be tempting to sign them up for a different activity every evening.
There is no right or wrong age, it depends on the individual child. Here are just a few suggestions. Early years: A singing, music or dance class with the emphasis on play is great. It’s also a perfect age to introduce a second language. Messy play/art groups are very popular. Infant school: Add a fun activity such as singing, music, dancing, sports and swimming. Junior school: As tests loom, you might wish to add an educational class to support their learning. Let them try a new sport or improve their skills in their favourite one. How about tennis coaching? Senior school: It’s easier to add activities as energy and independence increases, and schools offer more choice.
What’s on the menu?
Mini Mozart? Even for musical geniuses, from seven years, a 30 minute class is plenty, with ten minutes of daily practice. Fitness Fanatic Sports, dance, gymnastics and martial arts are great for fitness and flexibility. Mastermind If one subject is a struggle, one-to-one tuition can pay dividends.

Education Not helping at school…or doing so for the wrong reasons
Volunteering for the Parent Teacher Association is an ideal way to make friends and feel that you’re a part of the school community. You might also be able to assist in class as a volunteer - just don’t do it to snoop on who gets up to what in there.
Freaking out about friendship fall-outs
Reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy?’ It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten. Provide a shoulder to cry on and offer reassuring advice. You could also arrange playdates with other classmates to build bonds. Cath, recalls how daughter Ava, 7, fell out with her best friend, “I was ready to storm around to her house. Then I realised they change best friends every day. It wasn’t a big deal for her.”
Tackling other parents about problems between the children
Some little horror has been merciless to your child and your protective instincts are kicking in. But do not head over to give the other mum what for. She could have a different version of events and you’re unlikely to change her mind about who said or did what to whom. There’s also scope for a parental fall-out that will endure long after the kids make up. Cue an awkward few years at the school gate. If the situation’s serious, raise it with the teacher and let them sort things out.
Losing sight of the fact the teacher has 29 other pupils to look after
Been there, done that! Ten mistakes that parents make when they’re new to school life
Sangeeta, mum to Maya, 6, says, “There’s an element of ‘no news is good news’. If they’re struggling or misbehaving, the teacher will tell you. You get used to not knowing so much about what they do.”
By Liat Hughes-Joshi
Expecting your child to be chatty and delighted to see you at 3pm
Mums and dads of older children share their top tips on what they would have told themselves to avoid problems when they were new to the school run.
Complaining to the teacher - based on what your child told you happened…only it didn’t…
You take what your child has said as gospel, march in to see the teacher, only to fall flat on your (red with embarrassment) face when you discover your little one has got completely the wrong end of the stick. Even the most switched on, truthful child can mishear or misunderstand sometimes. Stay open-minded and communicate to the teacher that you appreciate what you’ve been told might not be what actually occurred!
Sweating the small stuff
Even little ones who were fine with full-time nursery can have the stuffing knocked out of them by starting school. With so much to learn, by home time many reception kids (and teachers!) are exhausted.
Alison, mum of Jack, 7, advises, “I wanted to catch up with him but he used to be so grouchy. Don’t sign up for any after-school activities initially. Lots of early nights helped, too. Oh, and always have a snack waiting for them - he still comes out starving every day.”
Focusing on whether they know their letters before they start but not worrying about getting their coat or shoes on
An interest in how your child is doing is healthy but getting overlywrapped up with the minutiae of reading levels is less so. Who could tackle the hardest spellings at the age of five will not go on their CV, after all.
Ask a reception teacher what they would like their new charges to be able to do and it probably won’t be about letters or counting. What they would like is for your child to be able to dress and undress for PE, use the loo independently and maybe recognise their name on their coat peg/belongings.
As Emma, mum to Jamie, 12, and Lucy, 9, puts it, “I realise now that who was sitting on which table or reading which books wasn’t anywhere near as important as I thought it was then. If your child is progressing and enjoying school, try not to worry.”
Not naming absolutely anything of use or importance!
Getting embroiled in school gate competitiveness
Engaging with ‘Competitive Mum’ is a lose-lose situation. If your child is ahead of hers, she’ll hate you for it. If hers has one up on yours, you’ll end up inwardly fuming at her smugness. Do not participate in her FBI-style interrogations about whether your child has done grade 42 piano or is taking their platinum swimming badge yet. If all else fails, adopt a vacant look and mutter “the reading scheme – don’t understand it”, or change the subject quickly - the weather, last night’s Eastenders, anything but school.
12
At ‘big school’, you aren’t going to be able to have the daily chat with staff you might have been used to at nursery or with a childminder. There could be 30 children in the class - if every parent asked for that ‘quick five minute catch up’ on a daily basis, ‘Miss’ would be there for 2.5 hours.
There’s a black hole in every primary school into which children’s belongings fall, never to be seen again. If you want to maximise chances of getting lost items back, add their name to everything. And be very wary when your child asks if they can take their favourite teddy/toy in to show the other children, as there’s a chance it will never be seen again. Liat Hughes-Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including ‘New Old-fashioned Parenting’ and ‘How to Unplug Your Child’ (both published by Summersdale) and ‘Raising Children: The Primary Years’ (Pearson).

Trick or Treat Etiquette
4-5 Henley Street, Stratford Upon Avon, CV37 6PT www.theMADmuseum.co.uk
By Justina Gapper
01789 269356
If you and your children are going trick or treating for the first time, here are a few guidelines.
What age can children start?
There’s no minimum age! Many parents enjoy dressing up and venturing out with their toddlers, whilst others take babies along in prams with older siblings. Quote ‘Families Warwickshire’ and get 10% discount!
What are the rules?
Only approach homes that have a visible invitation - whether it’s a pumpkin, lantern or other Halloween decorations displayed. Don’t knock if the lights are off and don’t knock more than once. Alternatively, you may decide to knock only on doors of friends and neighbours that you have pre-warned of the visit!
What if my children don’t like the treat?
Make sure your children are briefed to say “please” and “thank you” in addition to “trick or treat,” and try to be appreciative of any treat they are given.
What’s the trick all about?
The trick refers to the threat to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. These days it is uncommon to have raw egg splattered over your driveway by pranksters, but it’s safest not to answer the door to raucous groups of older teenagers, or if you suspect your visitors are not well-intentioned. If you are asked for a trick, what should you do? One harmless but funny idea is to get the homeowner to close their eyes and put their hand in a witch’s hat or toy cauldron filled with a gooey mess or plastic spiders, rubbery worms and insects!
Alcester Artisan Market Alcester is most famous for its Roman heritage although it is well known for its festivals and High Street activities including many community events such as the now famous food festival and the annual charity based themed street market. This year, Alcester Artisan Market was launched and is held every third Sunday in the month in the High Street. It offers an eclectic range of traders which change regularly and offer fine foods, fine art, collectibles, crafts and much, much more. You can buy everything from a real beaver pie to olives imported from Crete; from hand-made chocolates to a work of art and loads in between. Meander down the street, sip a coffee in one of the many cafes, enjoy a great Sunday lunch in one of the town’s renowned public houses and enjoy the Artisan experience!
