10 divorce myths smashed

Obtaining a divorce is not always easy especially when faced with myths and misunderstandings. They can be harmful if you believe them and allow them to influence your actions. Divorce lawyer Alison Ratchford explores 10 common myths you need to know about. 1. The “quickie divorce” This seems to be mentioned whenever celebrity couples are separating. However, there is no such thing. The divorce process usually takes around 4-6 months. Even a celebrity cannot shortcut this, so ignore what you read in the papers. 2. Divorce based on irreconcilable differences This is not currently possible here. You must show that your marriage has irretrievably broken down but this must be supported by either adultery, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, 2 years’ separation (by consent) or 5 years’ separation. 3. Common law rights King George II abolished the doctrine of common law wives 260 years ago. Therefore, it doesn’t matter how long you live with someone you will not gain automatic rights as their spouse. Cohabitation law is very different to marriage laws so don’t assume you will have the same rights. 4. We are divorced so financial claims are automatically dismissed Even after your divorce is final, financial claims against each other remain live until a formal Court Order is obtained dismissing them. 5. You have to obtain your spouse’s agreement to proceed with a divorce Not necessarily, particularly if you are using the grounds of unreasonable behavior, desertion or 5 years’ separation. There are various ways to move matters forward if your spouse refuses to respond or co-operate. 6. Fault affects the financial settlement Apart from in extreme cases, the reasons for the relationship ending are usually irrelevant in law when deciding financial settlements. Instead the aim is to find a fair solution that meets the family’s needs.

7. I will lose the rights over my family home if I move out Lots of people assume that they will give up their legal rights to the property by moving out but that is simply not the case. 8. Money, property or business in my sole name is irrelevant Once married, all assets become joint assets, regardless of whose name they are held in and they are all taken into account within divorce and financial proceedings. 9. Children automatically live with their mother There is an assumption that the existing main carer will continue postseparation. Usually this is the mother, but if this is the father or both parents then no presumption would exist in favour of the mother. 10. Lawyers want to get you into court Resolution family lawyers follow a code of conduct that ensures a nonconfrontational approach is taken wherever possible. Whilst there are cases where court may be the best or only option, many cases can be resolved through negotiation. Choose your lawyer wisely. Unfortunately, there are many more myths and misunderstandings about divorce and family law which can cause confusion and sometimes heartache. Make sure you get advice from a specialist family law solicitor on your particular circumstances. But did you know Families also has a new website? Families Online re-launched in July, with 342 local websites covering the whole of the UK. Like our magazine, it is the go-to site for parents, carers and grandparents, offering all the information they need to enjoy family time in their local area. An Area Manager plays a pivotal role in the success of each local site and is responsible for creating content for their local site, managing social media, marketing the site to local businesses and selling advertising on the site. If you are a local parent who loves exploring what your local area has to offer with your family, this opportunity may suit you! The role can be performed at home, working round the needs of your family - and all you need is a computer and an interest in introducing other local parents to everything that’s on offer in your community! Ideal candidates will have an understanding of how to put together good content for the site, experience with social media and the confidence to present the site to potential clients. So why not take a look at the site at www.familiesonline.co.uk For further information about Area Manager roles, contact recruitment@familiesonline.co.uk

As well as travelthemed titles such as ‘On a car journey’, ‘At the airport’ and ‘On a car journey in France’, there is also a lovely selection of nature and outdoorsy ones such as ‘Creepy crawlies’, ‘Birds’, ‘In the countryside’ and ‘In the garden’. www.collins.co.uk/page/i-SPY

Thumb-suckers and nail-biters ‘prone to fewer allergies’ Children who often put their fingers in their mouths are less at risk It may drive parents mad but it has been suggested that children who regularly suck their thumbs or bite their nails are less prone to developing allergies. The results of a study published in the New Zealand journal Pediatrics suggest that being exposed to germs at an early age can help boost the child’s immune system, making them less prone to developing allergies. The study followed 1,000 people and assessed them between the ages of five and 32. It found that suckers and biters had fewer allergies to things like house dust mites and pet dander at the age of 13. However, the habits seemed to have little or no effect on the incidence of developing hay-fever or asthma. A spokesperson from Allergy UK, said: “Research that has been carried out in other countries also adds weight to this theory of the role the environment and gut microbiota play in shaping an individual’s potential to develop a food allergy. “Having pets at home, older siblings and living on a farm have also been identified as environmental influences that may have a role in the development of allergic disease.”

Snippets I’d already done plenty of reading and had drawn up a shopping list, comparing the amount of paraphernalia needed to that which you buy when you’re expecting a baby! I was acutely aware of one of the key differences between a newborn baby and a puppy – you put a baby in their crib/Moses blanket/on the floor and they stay there. Our puppy on the other hand would already be mobile and with teeth! So we had to get the house ‘Eddie ready’ and we needed a safe place for him to sleep, wind down, rest and just to go to if we weren’t around to supervise him – Eddie’s Den. We brought Eddie home half way through the summer holidays when he was 9 weeks old. At the time of writing this, he’s been with us 5 days and it’s all going well. He’s settling in brilliantly, getting into a good routine and learning quickly what he should and shouldn’t do! It’s rather like having a newborn/baby/toddler and pre-schooler all in one!

Eddie, 9 weeks and 2 days

We’ve got a puppy! The excitement began at the beginning of the year when we made the decision to, finally, get a puppy. Now seemed the perfect time to have a dog join our family - our daughters are 10 and 8, and my job as editor of Families Warwickshire allows me to work from home. Our youngest is particularly passionate about animals and has been asking for a puppy for as long as I can remember. I spent a few weeks researching breeds and we all agreed that a cockapoo (cocker spaniel x poodle) would make the perfect family pet.

A few more weeks of research and a factfinding visit to a breeder in Lincolnshire resulted in putting our names on their waiting list at the end of March. Fast forward to the end of July when we were invited to ‘selection day’ at the breeders. Talk about cuteness overload! Along with other families, we got to spend a couple of hours with eight adorable 6-week-old puppies and by the end of our time with them, we were chosen by a gorgeous little blond boy who we named Eddie.

Celebrations at Stratford Butterfly Farm At a special opening ceremony held in July, Stratford-upon-Avon Butterfly Farm revealed its exciting new look following a major refurbishment programme, and introduced the ‘Maya’, an ancient rainforest civilisation exhibit. Improvements to the Butterfly Farm include a new entrance, a refurbished gift shop, and large new interpretation and information panels in the Activity Area and Discovery Zone. Also in the Discovery Zone, you can find out about the amazing lifecycle of the butterfly and watch butterflies hatch from their chrysalis in the Emerging Case. You can see moths and caterpillars and learn about some of the crops the ancient Maya farmed in the Rainforests of South America. In Mini-Beast Metropolis, get up close to some fascinating insects, clever creepy crawlies and other curious creatures. Prepare to be amazed when you see the Amazing Ants with the two busy colonies working non-stop right above you! As part of the refurbishment project, a new toilet block is currently being developed and will be ready in time for October half term. Earlier this year, the popular attraction was also thrilled to announce it had been awarded the 2016 TripAdvisor ‘Certificate of Excellence’ for the 5th year running! The accolade, which honours hospitality excellence, is given only to establishments that consistently achieve outstanding traveller reviews on TripAdvisor. Businesses must maintain an overall TripAdvisor rating of at least four out of five. Stratford Butterfly Farm is great to visit all year round and is a firm ‘Families’ favourite! www.butterflyfarm.co.uk

In such a short time, Eddie has made a hugely positive impact to our household and definitely feels like one of the family. We love him to bits. Even our cat seems quite taken with him…from a distance! Next up will be vaccinations, puppy school (which he starts the same week the children go back to school) and exploring the big, wide world. I’ll let you know how it goes!

Clubs & Classes

Born to run

Find out why running could be the best sport for your children In 2012, a school in Stirling started an amazing project; instigated by Head Teacher Elaine Wyllie, the pupils ran a mile at the beginning of school every day. The benefits to the children were seen almost immediately, with them becoming more energised in lessons, improved concentration and better behaviour all round.

• Jog at a slow pace, speeding up gradually, and then walk and shake out your legs • Skip, do high steps and skip sideways

The school has continued to keep up this initiative and other schools have also taken up the challenge. But could running be the sport of choice for your child?

At the end of a run, it is also important to cool down, so walk for a while to encourage blood to return to resting flow. Follow with some gentle stretches to prevent cramps. Have a look at running websites for tips on the best warm up and cool down routines for running.

Why is running great for children?

Fringe benefits

Running comes naturally to them. Just take a look at a playground full of children and you’ll soon notice that groups of them are running around. Running also forms a number of games - playing “It”, running races, etc.

Once your child has built up a bit of stamina with running, it can help with other sports such as football, rounders, baseball and rugby. Your child will begin to find the running part easy, which allows them to concentrate on skills and technique.

Entry level

Supporting their body

You really don’t need much equipment to get little ones running - as long as children have comfortable clothing, they can get started. The only thing to be careful of is their feet. Make sure you invest in a really good pair of running shoes and have them fitted by an expert in a specialist running shop. Your child’s feet are still growing and developing, so restricting them and having inadequate support can lead to injury and long-term problems.

Running takes a lot out of you, so it’s important to make sure your child is eating correctly and is well hydrated. A small, carb-heavy snack before a run is good and a balanced diet with plenty of protein, fruit and vegetables will help them progress. Make sure they carry water for longer distances and give them frequent drinks. Avoid energy drinks, as these are mostly sugar and caffeine.

How to get started

• Nobody should run with an injury - that includes children

There are a number of running apps and websites around now that help anyone, of any ability, to get started. So whether you choose Couch to 5K or Athletics 365 or something similar, you and your children can start off with a short run and gradually begin to work up to longer distances. A programme that follows a walk-run-walk routine works well, as you can get your breath back! Children can join in with ParkRun activities; some offer a junior version with a two kilometre distance - www.parkrun.org.uk. Kids Run Free is a charity that organises fun, running based activities for children in their local parks and schools - www.kidsrunfree.co.uk.

Warm up and warm down

@familieswarks

familieswarwickshire

• Try to keep it fun and ignore high pressured racing • Don’t time them • Make sure your child gets plenty of rest • Build up gradually to longer distances • Encourage them to slow to a walking pace when tired By Sally J. Hall

Running without warming up is a recipe for disaster, as you run the risk of injury. Start with a warm-up session which should include: • Walk at a brisk pace for three to five minutes

Clubs & Classes

Give your child the opportunity to shine

The benefits of after school clubs and classes Whether or not you think you may be raising the next Picasso or David Beckham, there’s no doubting the pluses of after school clubs. While finances may not permit your little ones being involved in different activities every night of the week, there’s no doubt that a couple of well-chosen clubs can be great for giving your child an insight into areas that the school curriculum doesn’t cover. From ballet to basketball and art to archery, there’s an after school activity out there for every child. And the best thing about them is they’re brilliant for all sorts of reasons – not just learning a new skill.

Warwickshire Music believes that your child deserves the best and offers a fantastic opportunity for all children to make music, make friends and make the most of their talent. The organisation is very proud of the range of groups and activities on offer to all young people in Warwickshire. Even children not learning instruments with them can still join in by being part of their Music Theatre groups and choirs. Children have a clear progression route as they improve and are able to work towards moving up into the next level group or activity. The highest level achievable is within the County Groups which range from steel pans to symphony orchestras. Warwickshire Music County Groups are constantly in demand to perform at prestigious venues across the county. With competitions, overseas trips and nationwide events, the county groups maintain a high profile and an even higher standard of musical performance. Give your child a chance to be part of this amazing musical journey and sign them up for one or more of the fantastic activities and groups available to them. For more information, visit www.warwickshiremusichub.org and register via parent live for a free taster session entering the word “families” in the additional information box.

For a start, after school clubs give children the chance to let off steam outside the classroom. When you consider that in many countries around the world, children don’t even start school until 6 or 7 years old, a full day in the classroom for youngsters can be a big ask. That’s why an alternative to textbook learning can be hugely rewarding. So, why are clubs so important? Team sports like football, rugby and netball are not only brilliant for keeping children active but also helping them learn team work where they can begin to appreciate what’s good for the whole team, rather than just thinking of themselves. Competitive sports are also great for learning difficult life lessons like being a gracious winner - and loser. However, if you’re on the lookout for team building clubs with a less competitive edge, you could consider Rainbows, Brownies, Beavers, Cubs and Scouts - children love them! Meanwhile, learning a musical instrument is ideal for discovering the art of practice, patience and persistence. Drama clubs are perfect for shy children who learn to find their voice singing and acting alongside others, while ballet and dance is suited for children to learn discipline and self-expression. Don’t forget the fun factor The list is endless. There are clubs for almost anything you can imagine. Archery, chess, horse riding, computer clubs, film making and even circus skills are all proving popular alongside the more traditional arts and crafts, swimming, tennis and Kung Fu. However, new skills, team work and confidence building aside, the most important thing to think about when deciding which club to choose is the fun factor. By Emma Flanagan After graduating with a degree in English Literature, Emma Flanagan has gone on to be an editor at Emma’s Diary and Families Online.

Local artist inspires next generation Warwickshire children recently showcased their artwork in an exhibition at The Art Group Studios in Leamington Spa. The pictures were a culmination of pupils’ work from weekly art classes and workshops run by The Art Group Studio owner and artist, Jessica Mallorie. Jessica, an accomplished and professional artist, has been running art classes and workshops for adults and children for five years. The exhibition featured over 50 pieces of art work produced by youngsters ages 4 to 14. Jessica Mallorie said: “The children attend classes after school or at weekends and this term we focused on wild animals. We started by seeking inspiration from the colours and textures of wildlife, before learning to sketch and paint with acrylic on canvas. “It’s an absolute delight to see these finished pieces. Throughout the term, each child has developed their own unique style and confidence in a variety of art mediums. Art is a talent but it’s also a learned skill that is unfortunately not taught in-depth in primary schools. I ensure each child is empowered with the skills, techniques and confidence to create their own masterpieces whatever their age or ability.” The Art Group Studios, in Althorpe Street, run children’s Weekly Painting Classes for ages 4 to 14 years . The classes are for all abilities and are suitable for complete beginners. The studios also offer adult painting classes, workshops and painting holidays, exhibition space, arty parties, studio hire and a small art materials shop. www.art-group-studios.co.uk

Inaugural success for Warwick dancers

Warwick School of Dance only opened 2 years ago but by the end of the academic year 2015-2016, pupils had entered and won sections at local dance competitions, and the school had held its first Royal Academy of Dance (RAD) examinations. The RAD is one of the world’s most influential dance education organisations and their exams, regulated by Ofqual, are widely regarded as the ‘gold’ standard in classical ballet. Principal, Dr Emily Twitchett, was therefore delighted with the results as not only did every pupil pass, but 50% passed with Merit and the other 50% passed with Distinction! These results are testament to the quality of the teaching at the school, and the dedication of the pupils and parents. www.warwickschoolofdance.co.uk

Back to School, Back to Swimming The fun doesn’t have to stop when the children go back to school! Get the new school year off to a swimmingly good start with Everyone Active’s award-winning swim activities. Their comprehensive Learn to Swim programme includes a wide range of activities to help your child start and maintain their aquatic journey. The sessions include rookie lifeguarding, diving, water polo and even synchronised swimming. Local tennis ace inspires boys and girls Marcus Willis is the 25 year old professional tennis player whose dream to play at Wimbledon came true this year. After his thrilling match against Roger Federer on centre court in June, lots more children have been inspired to pick up a racquet and enjoy the sport which he loves so much. The Juniors Tennis section at Warwick Boat Club, where Marcus is a coach, has seen numbers soar since their own local hero returned from his Wimbledon debut – and no-one is more happy about this than the man himself! Marcus has always loved all sports but was particularly drawn to racquet sports when he was younger and played badminton twice a week. He took up tennis after trying it out one summer when he was 9 years old and, as his play improved and he was getting the right results, he was encouraged to go further. From the age of 13 he started training 25 hours a week. Balancing that with school wasn’t easy and after getting his grades at GCSE, he committed himself fully to his tennis. What are the benefits of playing tennis? I asked Marcus. He believes that tennis is a very sociable sport where children can

have friends for life even if they don’t become a tennis pro, “You’re going to meet people and it’s nice, it gives you world life skills as such and that is as important as being successful.” He’s also very keen to see children outside and says, “Playing on their Xboxes, this is not what we want, we want kids outside, even if it’s not playing tennis, exploring, doing something.”

Warwick Boat Club welcomes players of all ages and abilities, and membership for juniors starts at just £4 per month. The club runs Try Tennis family sessions on Sundays from 2pm-4pm so head over and give it a go. Visit www. warwickboatclub.co.uk/tennis or call Gavin Henderson on 07787 568642 for more information. By Claire Jones, Editor

For those who show a talent for the sport and want to take it further, he still believes that, most importantly, playing tennis should be fun, “Education’s obviously very important, but, as much as a child can handle and they’re enjoying it, then let them play it as much as possible.” In between tournaments, Marcus will continue to coach children and adults at Warwick Boat Club, as well as at Warwick School and King’s High. Straight after his Wimbledon performance, he visited the schools and was thrilled to see the children so happy and “buzzing”. So what does it feel like knowing that you have inspired more children to give tennis a go? “It’s really good to see young people and they want to play tennis and be Marcus Willis - it’s pretty cool!”

Want the best for your child through music?

Warwickshire Music offers: • Instrumental and vocal tuition by fully qualified teachers • Wide variety of after school music groups • Music theatre groups • Specialist groups including Suzuki strings and drum school • Performance opportunities throughout the year “Thank you very much for a great 7 years of music. Tours, concerts and weekly practices with various CMS groups form some of my fondest memories and were certainly a wonderful opportunity.” Sam - member of the County Youth Orchestra and Wind Band.

Getting your child into a good routine School days and dark mornings can play havoc with your child’s routine. Here’s how to keep them happy - and get them up on time! As you and your child get into the autumn and winter school term, it can be difficult to cope with changing weather and dull days. The long evenings of summer are over, the nights draw in and the mornings are dark. Getting your child settled into a good routine is essential if you are going to ensure they get enough sleep and are able to get up on time for school without too much effort and moaning.

Exercise is your best friend

Even if the weather is dreadful, try to make sure that your children have some exercise every day. Not only will it help keep them fit and healthy but it also helps them to get a good night’s sleep. The best time is just after school, when it’s still light and you can take them to the playground or let them loose in the garden. Then it’s time for homework, dinner, bath and bed.

Plan your mornings

Most parents would agree; mornings are bad times! Everyone is tired and cranky and if you’re not careful, it can descend into chaos. So having a routine that is followed every school day can help immensely. Set an alarm for 15 minutes before you need to get the children up and get yourself together in that time. Whether it’s that first cup of tea, a shower or choosing what to wear, make sure you have time for you first - and everything else will go that bit more smoothly. Then it’s time to get the children up and for them to follow their routine, too. Avoid any electronic stimulation in the morning, so ban games, X-Boxes and the TV, as time can slip away when they are distracted.

prepare lunchboxes and get breakfast things out the night before.

Have rules

Make sure there are rules for where things are put when your children arrive home each day. Let them know that they can’t just dump their gear anywhere! Those school bags, shoes and coats must go in a specific place so that there is no frantic searching in the morning, with everyone getting frustrated. Sticking to this routine makes for a happier family.

Make sure they know their routine too Having a planner on view is a great way to avoid missing tutoring sessions, music lessons and play dates. A big calendar on the fridge means everyone can see what’s happening and when.

Why routines work

Children respond really well to a routine so you’ll thank yourself when they adapt to doing the right things at the right time each day. Have breakfast and dinner at set times, bedtime must be absolutely set in stone and homework should have appointed times too. Giving your children too much choice over their own routine can lead to their spending too long on games or play and not enough for homework and helping with chores. New hope for maths studies Asian-style teaching programme may help UK children A new system for teaching maths will sweep the nation, says the Department for Education. The Department has pledged £41 million for over 8,000 schools (50% of all UK schools) to start to introduce Asian style maths tuition. Shanghai, Singapore and Hong Kong lead the world in maths performance, using a system called maths mastery. Those using the scheme have been shown to perform better than their peers.

At Bilton Grange, a happy school with happy children awaits you At the end of the Bilton Grange drive, a warm welcome awaits you. Impressive Pugin architecture, ninety acres of heritage parkland and incredible facilities are the perfect theatre of dreams for children to be enthusiastic and inquisitive learners and, in amongst all the fun and bustle of life in a rural prep school, serious work also gets done. With some of the best specialist teachers, amazing facilities and some of the smallest class sizes in the area, children truly fulfil their potential, grow their confidence and unlock their talents at Bilton Grange. Design Technology and Science are taught by specialists in fully-equipped labs. Top musicians provide specialist tuition and

children can take part in a range of choirs and instrumental ensembles as well as drama productions in the school’s fully equipped theatre. Swimming is taught in the school’s own 25m indoor pool and children can even play golf on the 9-hole course within the grounds. With a strong track record of scholarships to top senior schools, space to play, woods to explore, and sport just about every day, children enjoy the best education and an idyllic childhood at Bilton Grange.

The system means that teachers spend a lot of time on one topic to make sure that children understand it fully. They also discover how problems relate to their everyday life, so they are given context. The system was created by educational psychologists and specialists and the result is a sequence of lessons supported by high quality textbooks. Maths mastery gives children the ability to recognise patterns, see connections and to be able to visualise – the main ingredients of problem-solving.

Firework safety advice As the Diwali Festival of Light and Bonfire Night fast approach and with all the excitement of rockets and Catherine wheels among adults and children alike, it can be easy to overlook the potential dangers of bonfire and firework celebrations. Tips for choosing your fireworks Did you know: Fireworks can travel at speeds of 150 mph, the cruising speed of some biplanes! Make sure the fireworks you buy are meant for home use, are suitable for the size of your garden and are marked with British Standard number (BS 7114). You should also:

Inspiring tuition At Explore Learning, our passion is to help students achieve their potential and be the best they can be. We get to know each child as an individual and help them to fall in love with learning. Our goal - to build confident, fearless learners who are hungry for knowledge. We’ve delivered award-winning maths and English tuition to over 175,000 children across the UK. Our award-winning approach has a proven record of supporting children both academically and attitudinally. This summer we’ve encouraged children and parents to learn new skills together, showing off what they’ve achieved back at school this September! www.explorelearning.co.uk

1.

Store fireworks in a metal box with a lid during the display

2.

Use a torch for checking instructions

3.

Use a taper for lighting fireworks

4.

Have a bucket of water close to hand

5.

Have a bucket or other container of soft earth to stick fireworks in

6.

Use a board or other non-flammable rigid surface for flat-bottomed fireworks

7.

Use supports or launches for Catherine wheels or rockets

2. Remember to wear gloves so that you do not get burnt 3. Get an adult to light the sparkler whilst your child is holding the base of the stick 4. Make sure that only one sparkler is lit at a time 5. Remember that when they are first ignited they give off a very bright and heated initial spark 6. Remember to hold the sparkler horizontally and as far away from your body and face as possible 7. Once you have had fun with the sparkler (try writing your name) and it is no longer burning, make sure you put it in a bucket filled with water 8. Never touch the end of the sparkler, even long after it has stopped burning Now that you’re clear on keeping your family safe, enjoy your Diwali celebrations on 30 October and Bonfire Night on 5 November!

Don’t forget the sparklers! Did you know: If three sparklers burn together they will do so at the same heat of a blowtorch used for joining metal and so it’s essential you follow a few guidelines for safe usage: 1. Find somewhere safe that is open, but not too windy
