Healthy lollipop set to prove sweet success for local entrepreneur

Who? What? When? Why? Where?

Spread your wings… me&i have launched their spring collection, full of frogs, flowers, wings and lots of other fantastic prints. They are now strengthening their Warwickshire team and are looking for mums who would like an extra income and a little “me time” to join their sales team. There’s also a complete line of stylish ladies wear, so mums can look as good as their children! All me&i clothes are made in European factories that care for their workers and the environment. The baby range uses organic cotton and the whole range is Öko-tex labelled, guaranteeing the clothes are free from harmful chemicals. For more information – on selling or buying – contact Pernilla Kemp on 07725 030821 or visit www.meandi.eu

Regular readers may remember Louise Carr-Smith from last year, when she was set to launch her revoultionary lollipops at the Stratford Food Festival. Unfortunately, due to a fire at the factory, Louise had to pull out and put her launch plans on hold. But now it seems it’s all systems go for the local mum and Willy Wonka wannabe! ‘Cleverpop’ is a sugar and sweetener-free range of healthy lollipops that aren’t just kind to your kids’ teeth - they also deliver 100% of their recommended daily allowance (RDA) of Vitamin C! Louise, a food scientist and former Unilever professional, has taken four years to come up with the right recipe, develop the supply chain and create the brand, supported by the Manufacturing Advisory Service (MAS). After initial success with school fairs and a host of independent shops in the West Midlands, she is now setting her sights on blue chip retailers with a major name set to introduce the lollipops. “It’s taken patient work to get to this point,” says Louise, “but I do feel like I’m now on the verge of something really exciting. Cleverpop is simply a great tasting hard candy lollipop, with the added innovation that it is completely sugar and sweetener free – an industry first.” “Using a unique mixture of fruit, vegetables and vitamins I have come up with a healthy alternative to promote wellbeing that doesn’t harm teeth and provides 100% RDA of Vitamin C,” she continues. “The market research I undertook proved that these are major selling points for parents keen to give their children treats that are good for them. We also worked hard on brand development, so they would appeal to teenagers and young adults, who are increasingly more discerning and looking for something different.” Cleverpops currently come in strawberry flavour and soon cola and cherry – and retail at just 25p. The online shop is now open and you can buy a pack of 10, 25,50 or a whole tub of 200!

Circus classes take off Children in the Leamington area are taking to the air with a brand new circus skills class. Gaynor Marro (who’s previously worked on the Millennium Dome show, with the Spice Girls, and most recently on the Godiva Awakes project) has set up the classes to teach children aerial skills such as trapeze, silks and rope. Adults can also get in on the action, with classes on a Sunday. For more information, email gaynor_godiva@hotmail.com or visit www.godivatrapeze.co.uk

Galvin & Galvin Kids Organic Dubble Trubble Shampoo & Body Wash

Ed Pick’s s

It’s easy to find organic, nasty-free bath products for babies, but as kids get older they start to resist the baby packaging. Celebrity stylist Daniel Galvin Jr has stepped into the breach with a gorgeous and very well-priced range, with no SLES, SLS or parabens. My son Luca absolutely loved the Cherry Bomb 2-in-1 Shampoo and Body Wash, which has made bath times so much easier! The full range includes Strawberry, Bananaberry, Watermelon and Cool Cucumber, and there’s even a detangling spray for unruly locks. Prices start at £2.99. Buy at Morrisons or online at www.danielgalvinjunior.com/store

Knitting Clothes Kids Love, by Kate Oates A really vibrant, spiral-bound book with a range of projects, such as funky arm and leg-warmers and slouchy hats, that kids will actually enjoy wearing. As a novice knitter, I’ll be taking it down to my local knitting shop for help with some of the more challenging pieces, but as each piece is small, at least I’ll have the motivation to finish it (unlike the jumper I started three years ago…). Published by Creative Publishing International, £16.99, from Amazon and book shops.

Babies Real Nappies... Real Change

What’s On events calendar

by Joanna Parry

This year’s Real Nappy Week takes place 15 to 21 April, with the theme of ‘Real Nappies... Real Change!’ to inspire a new generation of parents to make the change. The week is shaping up to be very exciting, with each day allocated a theme such as Real Choice, Real Easy and Real Change, looking at the benefits of Real Nappies. This year you can get stuck in by taking part in The Great Cloth Diaper Change (Sat 20 April at 11am), and be part of a worldrecord-breaking attempt for the most Real Nappies changed simultaneously. On 21 April, join in Real Clean and hang a chain of washing up in your garden, as others up and down the land will be doing. There are loads of events taking place across the country during Real Nappy Week, where you can meet people who use cloth nappies, get great advice and try out nappies to see how they work. You can search for events in the local area at www.goreal.org.uk/real-nappy-week. If you live in the Leamington area, drop into The Cotton Nappy Company Baby shop (41 Russell Street, Leamington Spa, CV32 5QB), where they’ll be holding events and in-store offers throughout the week. As well as taking part in the Great Cloth Diaper Change on 20 April, they’re also holding a Nappuccino Nappy Demo & Fitting Event on Weds 17 at 10.30am, and a Pre-loved Real Nappy Event on Fri 19 April, 7-9pm, selling good quality second-hand, ex-demo and trial nappies. This is great for those who want to try cloth nappies out but are on a budget, and 10% of sales on the night will go to NOTDEC Orphanage in Uganda. If you can’t get into Leamington, you can hold your own event – it can be as simple as inviting friends around for a quick demo, or organising a fashion show to show off the latest Real Nappy trends. Email info@goreal.org.uk for support packs and advice. If you need help choosing which nappy is best for you, the Go Real website has a new Chooser Tool, plus you can watch online fashion shows where you can see a range of show-stopping nappies! You can also apply for trial kits online, speak to advisors and take advantage of the special offers and prizes during Real Nappy Week. And don’t miss the online webinars for demonstrations of how to use real nappies. Plus, if you have never used them before, don’t miss The Great Real Nappy Giveaway – you could be a lucky winner! Check www.goreal.org.uk/real-nappy-week for how to enter. For more information, go online to: www.thecottonnappycompany.co.uk – online shop of the Leamington company, with lots of useful advice and a regular newsletter. www.warwickshire.gov.uk/cottonnappies – page on the County Council’s website devoted to useful advice about cotton nappies. Babies

By Linda Scannell Creating a beautiful record of your family growing up, particularly in that first year when they change so quickly, is important not only for you but for your children, so here are my top tips for capturing those special baby moments and details.

I

f you want a sleepy, nappy off shot, turn the heating up so the room is lovely and warm. Accidents will happen, so make sure you settle your baby on a washable sheet or blanket and put a changing mat or waterproof sheet underneath. Disposable changing mats are ideal as they’re so thin they won’t be noticeable under the blanket. Don’t leave them unattended if they’re on their tummy or not in a cot.

Use natural light wherever possible It’s more flattering for everyone and less intrusive than flash, so turn the flash off on your camera if you can. Settle your baby in good natural light – by a window is ideal but make sure it’s not draughty. Keep your distance and zoom in Candid shots are perfect for capturing all the beautiful expressions your baby makes when they’re playing so stand back so they forget you’re there and zoom in to get those fleeting moments.

Get down to their level If they’re crawling or concentrating on their favourite toy, chances are you won’t be able to see much of their face when you’re standing or sitting next to them. Get down to their level and you’ll get a much better view.

Don’t forget the details For me, photographs aren’t just about capturing a likeness; they’re there to remind you of all the unique

6

things you loved about your child when they were a baby. So include detail shots of your baby’s perfect little nails, the creases on their chubby legs, and their spiky hair.

Include toys and their nursery too You probably spent ages choosing your baby’s first bear and decorating the nursery. That bear could be bald by the time your child is 10 and the nursery decor will be replaced with Ben 10 or Barbie before you know it, so don’t forget to include toys, gifts and your baby’s room in your photos too. And pictures of your baby with the presents they’ve been given make great “Thank you” cards

Don’t forget to include you I find many parents are reluctant to appear in photos but chances are the pictures your child will really treasure when they’re older will be the ones where you’re giving them a cuddle so try not to be camera shy. Get a big smile When you’re taking a photo of your baby, as far as they’re concerned you disappear behind the camera, so that big smile can quickly turn into a puzzled frown. Try putting their favourite toy on top of the camera, or line the camera up and peep out above it while you click. Better still, get someone else to take the photo while you concentrate on making them laugh.

Babies

F

inally, there’s no point in creating beautiful images if you don’t look after them afterwards. Film negatives and prints were quite durable but digital files can easily be accidentally deleted or lost. So make sure you upload your images off your camera or phone frequently. But don’t just keep a copy on your laptop or desktop. Sadly, computers, hard disks and USB sticks can get stolen or go wrong so make copies on writable CD or DVD if you can. Even those may only last a few years, so investigate online photo storage and backup options – often you can get lots of storage space for free and

for just a small annual fee you can get services that will automatically backup your computer over your Internet connection. Consider keeping copies at a trusted friend or family member’s house too. Most importantly, print them and make them into photobooks or use them to decorate your home – showing off pictures of your children in this way is great for improving their self-esteem.

Linda Scannell is a contemporary portrait photographer based in Warwick. When she’s not working, you’ll probably find her photographing her two children, their cat Muffin, her husband, and the Warwickshire countryside, sometimes all at the same time. www.lindascannell.com/

Young players try the viola Young string players from across south and central Warwickshire had a chance to give the viola a go in February. Rose Redgrave, who plays viola with the Coull Quartet, played for the youngsters – who were mainly violinists – and gave them taster sessions on the instrument. India Golding, aged 14, from Alcester Grammar School said: “I thought the viola day was a great opportunity. I met new people and I thought Rose was a great teacher who taught me some new helpful technique to improve my vibrato.” The session was run by the County Music Service, with funding from the local music education hub, to promote playing the viola, which is a minority instrument. Crack computer coding with Warwick University competition Computer-literate youngsters are being invited to enter a competition run by the University of Warwick, as a way of improving their coding skills. Using the Scratch program – which enables children to drag and drop code components, rather than learning the whole computer language – primary-school children can make either a game, animation or a story and enter it for the competition by 30 April. Entries will be judged on creativity, originality and the fun factor, and the competition is open to all primary school-aged children in the area local to the University (Coventry, Warwickshire, Solihull, South Leicestershire). Winners will receive a Scratch Sensor board (Picoboard), which enables Scratch projects to interact with the real world. To enter, go to http://bit.ly/Yt7OaP

Education Learning doesn’t just take place in the classroom

Do you have fond memories of playing out? Football in the streets, climbing trees, Ackey-1-2-3, fishing for sticklebacks in the local stream? Chances are you do – but the odds are stacked against your children having the same experiences. 71% of parents born before 1970 regularly played outside, but only around 21% of children nowadays have the same priviledge, with 43% of adults thinking a child shouldn’t play outdoors unsupervised until the age of 14! A rise in the speed and number of cars on our roads, and a media-hyped awareness of “stranger danger” has led to our children being more estranged from nature than any other generation before them. “More children can identify a Dalek than an owl,” says Jon Millington, of the Surrey company Wild Learning. “But just five minutes’ outdoor play can produce rapid improvements in mental wellbeing and self-esteem, according to a study at the University of Essex. Free and unstructured play in the outdoors boosts problem-solving skills, focus and self-discipline. Socially, it improves cooperation, flexibility and self-awareness.” Schools are starting to redress this balance with the adoption of Forest School programmes and gardening on the curriculum, but we parents need to take advantage of our fabulous countryside here in Warwickshire, and relatively safe streets, and give our children more freedom. Fresh air and exercise is undoubtedly good for kids, and what’s more it’s free! If you’d like to start letting your kids out a bit more, why not start this month with Sustrans’ Big Pedal? It’s a countrywide campaign, running 28 February-20 March, encouraging kids to cycle or scoot to school. All schools taking part are entered into a race, and the more children cycle, the faster their school travels around a virtual course. If you’re worried about your child’s ability to cycle safely, ride with them for The Big Pedal and sign them up for a Bikeability course during the Easter holidays. It’s basically the Cycling Proficiency Test under a new name, and is running at Warwickshire College in Leamington and Rugby. Find out more at www.warwickshire.gov.uk/cycletraining

And if you have very young children, or are nervous about letting your children go wild, great places to take them as a family include National Trust properties, Hatton Country World, Ragley Hall, Compton Verney and Warwickshire’s Country Parks. An Independent Day School and Nursery for boys aged 3-7 and girls aged 3-11 But don’t forget that you don’t actually have to pay anything to reap these great benefits for your kids – just send them outside. Did You Know?

Luca and Maya Make: An Easter Tree

Eggs are a symbol of rebirth in most cultures and had already been given as springtime gifts before Easter was first celebrated by Christians.

Eggs are coloured brightly to symbolise the sunlight of spring. In Eastern European Christian tradition, they are dyed red to symbolise the blood of Christ. The first Cadbury’s Easter egg was made in 1875, in dark chocolate; milk chocolate didn’t arrive until 1905 with the launch of Dairy Milk. A new Guinness World Record for the most entrants in an egg hunt was set in London last Easter after 12,773 entrants took part in The Fabergé Big Egg Hunt. The charity event also broke another World Record when a giant chocolate egg created for the competition became the most expensive non-jewelled chocolate egg ever, selling at auction for £7,000.

The average time for children to start tucking into their first chocolate Easter egg is 11am on Easter Sunday, with 30% of children eating their chocolate egg instead of breakfast!

Egg rolling, which symbolises the rolling away of the rock in front of Jesus’s tomb, was traditionally played with hard-boiled eggs being rolled down a hill.

Courgette, Pea and Feta Frittata So, once you’ve made your beautiful Easter tree what do you make with all of those eggs? A frittata, of course! Frittata is Italy’s answer to the omelette and is a great recipe for spring – it’s still hearty enough to fill you up, but is much lighter than the heavy winter stews we’ve been eating. It’s also a useful one to know if you have to cater for a gluten free diet – think quiche without the pastry! This recipe uses the lovely salty Greek cheese feta, with fresh spring flavours like dill and courgette. It would make a nice light meal with a salad, and could also be eaten cold in a lunchbox. Ingredients: 2 tsp olive oil 1 medium onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, crushed 1 small courgette, grated and squeezed dry* ½ tsp dried dill 5 large eggs 4 small new potatoes, cooked and quartered 50g peas, defrosted 75g feta cheese, cubed Seasoning Preheat the oven to 200C Heat the oil in a pan and fry the onion until soft (about 5 minutes). Add the garlic, courgette and dill and continue cooking for a minute or two (don’t worry if it seems a little dry). Beat the eggs in a large bowl and then add in all the other ingredients, mixing well. Line a small ceramic dish with baking parchment, pour in the mixture and bake for 25 minutes until set. Serve with a little salad, some grilled vegetables or coleslaw. *Place the grated courgette in a clean tea towel and squeeze until the excess moisture drips out. This will stop your frittata from being too wet.

Ed’s Reading Room Hi kids, parents, grandparents, teachers – and book lovers everywhere! I’m Ed and here is my Winter book selection for you to enjoy. The books are all available online from Ed’s Reading Room at www.edontheweb.com. Ed’s Reading Room is an exciting free online book and story club for primary children in homes and schools. Each month, recently published books are selected as Ed’s Books of the Month for Owlets (age 5-7) and Owls (over 7s). On the website, there are fun literacy activities to accompany each book, including word searches, quizzes, poetry and reviews, and there are new original stories in Edtime Stories. There are also lots of other fun online activities, complementary to the curriculum. Check out Ed’s Archive for Ed’s Books of the Month from previous months.

FOR AGES 5-7 YEARS Arthur and the Mystery of the Egg by Johanne Mercier (Phoenix Yard Books £4.99) ED SAYS: ‘Arthur finds an egg in his grandparents’ garden. It’s a fairly ordinary egg but when he takes it into the house the grown-ups make a huge fuss. It really is a puzzle where it came from, as there are no chickens nearby – and they all try to solve that great mystery, which came first, the chicken or the egg? They are in for a big surprise when the egg cracks, leading Arthur to ask the grown-ups another tricky question! ‘This is a lovely story for young readers who are sure to see things from Arthur’s point of view. There are super illustrations throughout the book which is the first in a new series.’

The Smug Pug by Anna Wilson (Macmillan Children’s Books £5.99) ED SAYS: ‘Welcome to Crumblyunder-Edge! Pippa Peppercorn hates the idea of going back to school after the holidays, but it is not as bad as she thinks because there is an intriguing new girl at school called Tallulah with an equally intriguing dog, Smug. But when Pippa tells Dash the dachshund, at Mrs Fudge’s salon Chop ‘n’ Chat, how amazing her new friends are, he is less than impressed. ‘This is a laugh-out-loud story that is packed full of action and fun. The delightfully wacky characters will amuse boys and girls alike.’

FOR AGES 7 YEARS + Ghost Buddy: How to Scare the Pants Off Your Pets by Henry Winkler & Lin Oliver (Scholastic £5.99) ED SAYS: ‘Billy Broccoli and his ghostly pal Hoover Porterhouse III, also known as Hoove, are off on another adventure. Hoove is seriously lacking in responsibility, so Billy makes it his business to help Hoove improve in this area and he decides a good way forward would be to find Hoove a pet to take care of. But Hoove is not really an animal type, so will Billy succeed in helping Hoove mend his ways? ‘This is the latest story in this hilarious series. The adventure shared by these unlikely friends is very entertaining and gripping from beginning to end.’

Bone Quill by John & Carole E Barrowman (Buster Books £6.99) ED SAYS: ‘Matt and Emily Calder are twins who possess extraordinary powers, including the ability to bring paintings to life. In this, their second adventure, they try to find their mother who has gone missing and desperately search for the ancient and mysterious bone quill by travelling back in time. Will they be able to stop those who attempt to abuse its power? ‘This is a thrilling story with fantastic characters and settings. It includes references to real and imaginary paintings thereby encouraging an interest in art. It’s a real page-turner of a book.’
