Families Welcome
Welcome Spring is here! ...thank goodness. I don’t want to be that person that wishes away the days, especially as the older you get the quicker they seem to fly by anyway, but I am ecstatic year on year to see the back end of February! The days get longer - even more so when the clocks go forward on the 31st March - the cherry blossoms bloom, the temperature starts to rise and we begin to emerge one by one from our central heated hideouts, all happy and hopeful faces and a couple less layers of wool. In this issue we have 7 family tickets to give away as well as all the usual local news & views, and the very best events this Easter for you and your family. Don’t forget to drop me an email if you have anything you would like to share with us at Families magazine - we love hearing from you!

Water Babies
Teaching water confidence and safety techniques from birth, the uniquely structured Water Babies programme is designed to make the most of babies’ natural affinity with water. With progressive training, babies can be taught lifesaving skills such as turning onto their backs or, following a sudden submersion, swimming to the nearest solid. And it’s so important that they do. Within the last three years, at least ten of their children saved themselves from drowning – despite five of them being only two. Swimming from birth is excellent for babies’ development, providing a complete physical workout which in turn aids the development of the brain. What’s more, regular swimming can enhance their awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns – a definite bonus! With a clear emphasis on having fun, lessons are generally very sociable occasions – and excellent for strengthening the bond between the two of you. Water Babies lessons run across West Sussex. Pagham Harbour Pagham Harbour is a lovely peaceful nature reserve, one of the few undeveloped stretches of the Sussex coast, and an internationally important wetland site for wildlife. It is a great place to get away from it all - A sheltered bay that fills and empties with each tide, with wild ducks, geese and wading birds flighting to and fro, a wealth of wildlife, beautiful landscapes, and a rich historical heritage. Around this time in spring different migrant birds pass through. The Harbour offers a wide range of events and activities suitable for families all year round, including pond dipping, bug hunts, art and craft activities, beach beastie hunts, nature trails, seasonal themed events. There are also regular drop-in events held during the school holidays. There is a small Visitor Centre with car park and toilets, and long walks around the harbour edge to the sea. In January 2012, the RSPB took over the day-today management of the site from West Sussex County Council, who remain a very important partner, helping to fund this large and complex site. Families Education
Is an independent school worth the cost? Making the decision to pay for an independent education is not easy when times are tough. Parents from many middle class professions are feeling the pinch. Yet, despite the worst economic downturn since the 1930’s, the numbers attending independent schools in Britain actually rose last year. So why choose private and commit to the equivalent of a small mortgage in fees when there is a free alternative? The question is, is it worth it? Ironically, Education Minister Michael Gove provided the answer for many parents when he said the sheer scale of privately educated individuals in positions of power in politics, media, comedy, sport and music was part of a “deep problem” in our country. Thousands of parents make huge financial sacrifices each year – foregoing holidays, new cars and other luxuries – because they believe a private education will give their child a better chance in life.
& Childcare
– almost all private schools offer an impressive range of clubs and many have state of the art sports facilities. It is no coincidence that half of all Team GB Olympic gold medallists had attended independent schools. In the real world, confidence and social skills are just as important as exams results and extra-curricular achievements in getting a first job or making your way up the career ladder. Independent schools – due to their small size and more personal nature – are often better at developing self-confidence and a can-do attitude among their pupils than larger, more anonymous comprehensives. Of course there are wonderful state schools too and savvy parents may well mix and match with some opting to go private for prep school, hoping it will give their child the edge when it comes to securing a grammar school place. Others will opt to send their child to a good local primary school and focus their resources on paying for a place at a fee-paying secondary school to boost their child’s chances of success.
The statistics speak for themselves – although independent school pupils account for 7 per cent of the pupil population, they achieve 26 per cent of A* grades awarded at GCSE level. At A level fifty per cent of their entries are at A* A grades, compared to 23 per cent of entries from state schools. This feeds into University admissions with privately educated students accounting for more than 40 per cent of students attending Oxford, and one third attending Cambridge. Smaller class sizes, better resources and greater one to one support is one of the key reasons given for this discrepancy between state and private. Academic high flyers are stretched to their potential, but it can also be argued that it is the child of average ability who has most to gain as this environment helps them to punch above their weight when it comes to achieving good results. Clearly, academic success is one very powerful reason for choosing an independent school, but it is by no means the only one. The ethos of an independent school is to develop the whole person and to enable them to progress their interest and enthusiasm in a whole range of extra-curricular activities. ‘‘As all parents know it is “quality time” that counts - small classes allow pupils more “quality time.” It is important for pupils to show the world as many facets of themselves as possible - academic, creative, sporting and most importantly humanity. A full and rounded curriculum facilitate this. At Mayville we believe that self-esteem and an understanding of oneself will mean that the challenges that will come in life can be met with confidence. The security of a small school providing big opportunities is an important foundation for later life.’’ Martin Castle – Headteacher, Mayville High School ‘‘At Portsmouth High School we take the time to get to know our girls well and guide them on a career path that is right just for them. We have many successes academically as well as on the sports field and in the creative arts. There are a wealth of opportunities to get involved in and our activity programme, for example, encourages the youngest to learn how to programme a computer and older pupils to get involved in debating competitions. As member of the Girls' Day School Trust, a network of 26 schools, there is an active alumni with a wealth of talent and advice for current pupils.’’ Mrs Jane Prescott -Headmistress, Portsmouth High School ‘‘When choosing a school for your child it is important that all of their needs are met. As well as ensuring they are challenged academically, children need fun and enjoyment to ensure their school years are truly memorable. Like many independent schools, St John’s College in Southsea prides itself on a full and varied co-curricular programme to support a course of academic study. Pupils in our Junior and Senior Schools are encouraged to take part in a variety of activities - whether they want to follow a particular hobby, learn a new skill or support their House there is always something extra on offer.‘‘ Clare Young – St John’s College, Head of Marketing and Development March/April 2013 Families Solent East 9

“Can't we just use
spell checkers?”
By Howard Jones of KipMcGrath Education Centre Those of us who struggled with spelling ourselves, or are in the process of helping little ones learn their ‘tricky’ words, would love the answer to this question to be “Yes!” Spelling rules just seem, well unruly, and anyway don’t too many correction crush creativity? The problem is that we learn spellings in a variety of ways. Sometimes we have to spell the whole word from memory, these are the dreaded (sight or tricky words), but more usually we need to sound out and decode words using phonics (letter sounds). Words are both symbols on paper and sounds we say. So when we read words we hear them in our head. This is what makes poetry or songs work well and sound attractive (or not). If we can’t hear words when we read them we won’t enjoy their rhythm or rhyme. You might say, but why not just spell phonetically? Sadly, there is no one way to say a word (just watch Coronation Street), and this is made more complicated by English being spoken by people all over the world. Also, if words that sound the same (e.g., rain, rein and reign) were spelled the same way, their meanings would be harder to work out. Spell checkers are fine as an aid, but the student who spells "does" as "dose" will not see the mistake, and will continue with the misspelling habit. However, the good news is that technology can help us learn our spellings more efficiently, with tuition programmes, online resources and spelling gadgets. Back to the tricky words then; try getting the child to see the shape of the word (using joined up handwriting), say, and hear the word. This will help the ‘working memory’ learn better!

What’s the best mum advice
you have ever had? To celebrate Mothering Sunday, we’ve asked Families Editors near and far to tell us the best piece of advice they’ve been given when it comes to being a Mum... ‘‘Make the most of every opportunity to play with and listen to your children. Give them your full attention and show genuine interest. The time when they want to tell you everything is so short - before you know it they are teenagers and everything is a secret. You become the most embarrassing person on the planet!’’ - Helli Roberts, Families Head Office ‘‘Pick your battles. I think this is a piece of advice that gets more valuable the older my children get, although was given to me when my eldest was reaching the terrible twos. Then it was about nap times and refusing meals. Now it's about what to wear to a party and homework. By picking your battles you let your children know that there are some things that aren't up for debate. If you nag about everything, the important things get lost among the things that really don't matter.’’ - Sarah Butters, Editor Families Leeds ‘‘Take help when it is offered - even if you might not be able to repay the favour. You will get the chance later to help someone else and a beautiful chain of helping hands will be created. I was given this advice when my son was born and both he and I had a fairly bad time. I stoically carried on because I thought if someone did me a favour I would be expected to repay it and I did not have the energy. Another mum sat me down and told me to take her help and from that was born a friendship of 10 years.’’ - Rachel Bentley, Editor Families Pennines ‘‘Slow down. Don’t rush everywhere. Stop and appreciate the precious time that can be spent with our children. It might be walking at their pace and chatting, or allowing them to tie their own shoes without diving in first. Time is precious, but time with your kids is even more precious.’’ - Vicki Hoarty, Editor Families Sussex Coast ‘‘My eldest son was born without a left hand. After the initial shock had worn off, all I could think about was, how will he crawl, how will he develop, how will he cope? After meeting with a specialist surgeon he gave us the best advice ever – Don’t mollycoddle him. So from the earliest age, we encouraged him to get out there and have a “can do” attitude. It paid off – he was (and still is) a lot more capable physically than a lot of his peers, much to everyone’s amazement.‘‘ - Caryl Hall, Editor Families Cheshire

Do you know all about
Childcare vouchers?
If you’re working during the school holidays, it’s likely you will need to pay for childcare. Did you know that you can do this by opting to pay via childcare vouchers?
sounds like a bit of a faff or that you will have less money in your pocket each month, but the voucher scheme can save you over £1000 a year - a basic rate taxpayer can pay for up to £243 of childcare with vouchers each month.
Guy Ker, Managing Director at Super Camps, told us that only 30% of childcare bookings at Super Camps’ made during last summer were paid for using Childcare Vouchers. This shows that many parents are missing out and could be saving themselves a lot of money each year.
So for example, if you give up £1000 of salary a year (but after tax and National Insurance that’s only worth around £700 in your pocket) in return, you get £1000 of vouchers, so you are £300 per £1000 better off.
Childcare vouchers are a special government scheme operated through employers that allow you to pay for childcare from your pre-tax salary and National Insurance income. They can be used by any parents with children aged up to 15 years and, if each parent works, they can both claim for childcare vouchers, so there’ll be twice as many to use.
If you’re employer already runs a childcare voucher scheme themselves it will be easy to get signed up. If they don’t, don’t be afraid to ask them to start one. It needn’t cost them anything – and in fact they’ll save money as they won’t have to pay National Insurance on wages you use for vouchers.
A wrongly held belief is that childcare vouchers are only useful for paying for pre-school nursery places, when actually they can be ‘banked’ and used in one go for older children during the holidays. You might be thinking it all
The vouchers aren’t specific to each child and can be used as and when they are needed.

If you are self-employed, ask your accountant as you are also entitled to childcare vouchers. For most people there is no catch, though if you claim Child Tax Credits, using childcare vouchers may affect the amount you receive – so it’s worth checking if you’ll be better off with the HMRC’s online calculator.

These conditions tend to be far worse during the winter months than the summer. There are various reasons for this, the main one being central heating which, tends to further dry out the skin.

Another issue is the ratio of omega 3 and 6 fatty acids. We eat far too much omega 6 which is found in vegetable oils such as sunflower, vegetable oils, rapeseed, and corn oil. Omega 6 fatty acids promote inflammation and can make these skin conditions worse.

One of the most widely used herbs for this condition is called " chickweed" (Stelaria media) this herb grows extensively all over the UK. It is a low lying creeper with tiny white star shaped flowers. It favours damp and shaded areas. Chickweed is cooling in action and also helps to stop or reduce itching. It can be made into creams and ointments for this purpose. Or simply made into a herbal infusion, allowed to cool and dabbed onto the affected areas. This method is especially useful
remedy's in very small babies. The herbal infusion may also be added to the child's bath water to reduce redness and itching. Another herb that I use a lot for these conditions is rose. Rose water, and rose extracts are also cooling on the skin, helping to reduce redness and itching. I add rose water to my creams and sometimes add it to the child's internal medicine to. Marshmallow (Althaea officinalis) is another native herb that I also use extensively for the treatment of these conditions. Both internally and externally. Children seem to like the idea of marshmallow until they realise it is not the fluffy white and pink sweets you toast on a camp fire! Marshmallow root powder contains plant substances called " long chain polysaccharides" these compounds are deemed to be pre-biotics. This means that they feed the friendly bacteria in the small intestines and bowel, thus helping to repopulate the gut with friendly bacteria. This is essential for the health of the body in general, in my opinion seems to be of huge benefit for the treatment of various skin complains including eczema. I often add the herbal tincture to my creams as marshmallow root is very emollient/softening to the skin. It helps with very dry scaly skin. Chamomile is another favourite for the treatment of red itching skin conditions the tea drunk internally helps to reduce stress and anxiety which makes the condition worse. Chamomile is also anti-inflammatory helping to reduce inflammation and redness. You can use the herbal infusion of chamomile in the child's bath to sooth, reduce redness, itching and inflammation. For further information you can call Wendy Budd on 07878306621 or pop into Budds herbal apothecary 78 Albert Rd, Southsea.
Wendy is a member of the National Institute of Medical Herbalists, she qualified with a BSC(Hons) in herbal medicine in 2006. Wendy has been in constant practice ever since, seeing hundreds of patients during that time. She runs workshops every Wednesday from 8-9 pm demonstrating how to make ointments, balms & creams.

Spring is in the air. Daffodils, lambs, and rows upon rows of Easter eggs in the shops, waiting to be consumed by a hoard of eager children, hungry for the tooth-rottingly chocolaty deliciousness of overpriced, over-packaged seasonal treats. I know children who receive many of these treats each year, from their parents, aunts, friends, teachers, and even cleaners! No doubt parents sensibly ration out the sweet treats, or in some cases, hide them away until they themselves feel a bit peckish (or is that only me?!).
A once a year treat like this can be great fun, but once you’ve dealt with the chocolate, you are still stuck with heaps of packaging that presumably adds greatly to the cost of the product. Feel guilty about consuming so much chocolate? Then why not think about how you can recycle the choc-boxes. Cardboard can be composted. Shred it up into nice small pieces and layer it with your vegetable peelings. Cardboard can be slow to rot down, but is a good way to dispose of it. But what of the plastic domed shapes that encase the chocolate egg? These too can be used for growing. Why not use them as mini propagators? Pop one half over the top of a tray of soil and seeds and it will act as a mini greenhouse. And if you want to shape up for summer – you can burn off 340 calories per hour gardening. Come and join the Friends of Cumberland House and Southsea Greenhouse at the gardens beside Canoe Lake for ‘Dig Tuesdays’. Check out the amazing butterfly collection in the museum. We’re having a Big party on Sunday 21st April, so bring all the family down to visit the garden on its opening day, meet our own garden bunny and join the crazy carrot hunt.

Tips from our local mums & dads: ‘’I didn't change my eldest over to cloth until he was 14 months so it’s never too late! My youngest was in cloth from a few weeks, as soon as I was back on my feet after the birth. There's a lot of preconceptions about cloth nappies, but they've come a long way since the days of boiling terry towelling and rubber pants. They're easy to use, just pop in a bucket once wet or dirty and once you have a full load just chuck in the washing machine and put on a 40 wash. I have lots of different types and brands, the prices vary - I wouldn't advise buying just one type or brand as not all nappies suit certain babies, so get a couple of different nappies and try them all out! I like tots bots, alva baby, bumgenuis and blueberry but everybody has their own favorites.’’ Ebony Pack - Portsmouth
‘’Use a lidded bucket to store used nappies before washing (no need to soak them) and add Tea Tree essential oil to the bucket to keep it smelling fresh. Consider carefully what detergent to use as it will be on your baby's most sensitive skin. Use as little detergent as possible - we use a combination of soap nuts, Biowash ball and BioD nappy sanitiser (from www.easyeco. me although you can get them elsewhere) so we don't get detergent build-up. Preloved nappies are a great way to try different types and find out what suits you, as well as what fits your baby best. There are also cloth nappy services for trying before you buy. Lots of people use cloth nappies parttime, choosing disposables for holidays or for day trips.’’ Jo Harvard - Meon Valley Slingmeet & Library
‘Having used both cloth and disposable, I found that cloth are every bit as easy to put on as disposables, which was the main thing I was worried about at first. Main reason for wanting to use cloth nappies were because of landfill - disposables are just unnecessarily wasteful.’’
‘’Some mums are worried about nappies becoming stained and still looking dirty even after washing. However UV light from the sun, even on a cloudy day and even from inside a window gets rid of the majority of stains. In the middle of summer, sometimes you only need an hour on the washing line to lessen even very stubborn stains. It’s just like magic!” Rose Glendinning – Nappy Bliss Laundry Service
