No, we are not crazy; at Biz School we do all this and more. Our flexible courses for children aged 9-15 years old are delivered by business professionals and teachers and are tailormade to your school’s timetable. Courses run for 1-32 weeks, covering everything from economics and marketing to project management and finance. Highly interactive, fun and challenging - Biz School students use their new found business knowledge to set-up and run their own business. But first they must complete the Pop-up Challenge, running their own pop-up shops for 15 minutes with £6 and competing against each other in the Bears’ Den – the Bears select the winning business for the class to launch and run. Courses are designed for classes of around 30 pupils and can be run in parallel and we offer attractive CSR company sponsorship packages.

Welcome from the

Editor This is one of my favourite issues of Families magazine. As I write this, the sun is streaming in through the window, the clocks have gone forward and the evenings are getting longer - though with that comes the annual trouble of convincing my son it’s time for him to go to bed when the sun hasn’t!

I’ve spent the last few weeks researching (and getting excited about) all the festivals and events coming up over the summer. And there’s some really interesting stuff happening this year Dinosaurs, Vikings and the annual Portsmouth Festivities, with lots going on for families. Peppa Pig is popping up in a few places too! Fire up the BBQ’s and stock up on sun cream! Summer’s finally here.

The ‘Eat my Street’ category is particularly good for families – get together with others on your street to show how resourceful you are in growing your own food. Or plant up interesting containers and enter the ‘Balcony’ category? There are also exciting categories that you could encourage your children’s school to enter. ‘School decorated with flowers’, ‘School environmental project’, ‘School garden cultivated by children’ and ‘Eat my School’ are all great opportunities to engage children with growing. Many of the categories are judged on their sustainability and encouragement of wildlife, all great reasons to get your children involved. For many of the categories, a £50 prize is on offer from Southern Water, for good water management. If you want to find out more, want to fill in a form online, visit

It completely rocked our world. He was our first baby and we felt so helpless.

We loved him dearly and were determined to keep him well. Doctors told us that, like 2.5 million other people in the UK, we are both carriers of a faulty gene and that Ethan had inherited this gene from us both. There was a 1 in 4 chance of each and every further baby having Cystic Fibrosis. Thankfully Evie and Zac are free from it. With Ethan finally home, we began his life-long treatment. Initially the physio meant clapping a wriggling baby on his back twice a day. Quite challenging! Now it involves using a PEP mask to exercise his lungs, blowing exercises and a mucus-thinning nebulising treatment. Ethan is extremely active, swimming regularly. Exercise helps to keep his lungs clear from excessive thick, sticky mucous which could otherwise clog them. He accepts that his strict afterschool treatment regime is necessary for him to stay healthy. We are very honest with him. Fifty years ago, frail children invariably attended special schools. Now they look well. It’s hard to believe they have such a serious condition. But they remain very susceptible to infections. “This is my constant fear. All children get colds, but with Ethan I worry that they will go to his chest.’’ Minor bugs can develop into serious respiratory illness. CF children are treated rigorously with antibiotics, sometimes intravenously. They are not allowed to mix with other CF kids, in case they pass each other infections. Consequently it’s not easy to meet other CF mums. ’’ Initially I felt very isolated.’’ says Karina. ‘‘Ethan’s hospital has been great at introducing me to other families locally and through this and the local CF group I have made some great friendships. We all fight together for a better future.’’ Karina and Sue (son aged 44) meet at the Portsmouth & Isle of Wight branch’s regular get-togethers. Cystic Fibrosis Trust

50th Anniversary What is Cystic Fibrosis? Cystic Fibrosis is a life threatening disease affecting the lungs and digestive system and affecting over 10000 in the UK. This year it is the 50th Anniversary of the Cystic Fibrosis Trust. Founded in 1964, the trust aims to:

Research a cure

The CF gene was identified in 1989. Gene therapy clinical trials are in progress. Although life expectancy has improved greatly, many lives are lost prematurely. Despite great progress, Cystic Fibrosis is not yet beaten.

Facilitate early diagnosis

Since 2007, CF testing has been included in the routine heel prick test for all new born babies.

Support patients and families

The Trust has funded research at Southampton and Portsmouth Universities and clinical care and training for health professionals at Southampton CF Centre. For advice and support, ring the helpline - 0300 373 1000. www.cysticfibrosis.org.uk

Children’s Birthday parties The birthday party is one of the best moments of the year for most children, and can be one of the most stressful for us parents! Here are some tips from Families magazine editors nationwide to help make it go as smoothly as possible.

Moira Lizzie

Plan early

If you think you can book your first choice entertainer and venue a fortnight before your child’s party, think again. The best people and places are often fully booked months in advance (See our list of local party providers opposite).

Don’t make it too long The length of your party is very much dependant on the age of your children. Our party experts say one hour of entertainment is about as much as the average 2-4 year old can take, followed by half an hour for food and farewells. You can increase that to a two hour party once they turn 5 years old. Don’t forget to put a finish time on the invites.

Ask your child

It sounds obvious, but it is easy to get carried away with creating the perfect party as you see it, or to feel like you are competing with other parents – make sure you ask your child what their idea of a good party is. It may be a lot simpler than you first thought!

Check for allergies

In a group of children, chances are there will be some allergies and some children who can’t eat certain food for religious reasons. Ask about allergies when you know who is coming along so you know what they can and can’t eat, in case the child forgets in the excitement or is unaware of hidden ingredients!

Consider your party date It’s heart-breaking to receive a steady stream of ‘nos’ after you’ve spent weeks securing an entertainer and a venue on a particular date. Give yourself a chance

8 | May/June 2014 | Families Solent East

by avoiding key dates, like Fathers’ Day or bank holidays and religious holidays such as Easter Saturday and Yom Kippur. Try googling the date and area you live to make sure there isn’t a huge event happening you didn’t know about! Families may jet off on holiday as soon as school’s out, or just before term begins again so avoid weekends at either end of the school holidays.

Don’t let your child have final say on the guest list If you let your little one take charge of who they’re inviting, they may leave out the friend they’ve fallen out with in the playground that week. They will also likely change their mind about it the day before the party! You may need to apply some parental common sense when it comes to the invites.

Plan B If you are planning an outdoor party and the weather turns bad, it’s good to have a back-up plan. Save all your recycled bits and pieces and the children can have fun sticking and painting a junk robot, or create a massive collage together.

Feeling creative?

Stampin’ Up! offer a beautiful range of materials and tools for creating the perfect invites, decorations and gifts. Visit www.stampinup.com

Party bag alternatives Party bags: usually found in the back of your car a week after the party just as the buttercream icing is going rancid - why not try something different this year?

Lucky dip

Use you party bag budget on one gift for each child and do a lucky dip at home time instead of the usual party bag? Each child gets one small gift rather than lots of plastic things that often end up broken and in the bin (or gathering dust under the sofa)

Potty for plant pots!

It’s planting season. Give each child a small pot plant and a pack of seeds – if you’re really creative you could decorate and name each one, or get your birthday child to do it in advance! They will no doubt enjoy doing it. Sunflowers are easy to grow.

Book sets

You can pick up lovely books fairly cheaply these days – get a box set of appropriately aged books, enough for one for each child and if you have any left over, an extra birthday present for your child. Packs of books from www.thebookpeople.co.uk can cost less than £1 each

Balloon modelling

Learn how to do balloon modelling – give them a choice at the beginning of the party and make one for each child – visit magic.about.com/od/ balloontwisting for instructions on how to do loads of different models, from swords and flower hats, to elephants and giraffes. Something to add to your Parental CV too!

They have three classes with a total of seventy children on roll. The children have helped design a new school logo (pictured right) which is featured at the top of the page and new signs for the school.

‘I foster because I love watching the children develop and grow into their own person.’ Call now to find out more about fostering with Hampshire County Council

The logo incorporates Hambledon’s connection with cricket and the vine leaves and grapes represent the vineyard that overlooks the school. There has been much interest in our school as the word has spread of our change of status to an all through primary school. Head teacher Eileen Ball says, ‘’It is a very exciting time for Hambledon Primary School. If you would like to have a look round we have an open morning for prospective parents to come and visit the school on Friday 2nd May 9:30 – 11:30am.’’ This will be a great opportunity to see the school in action, have a chat to the staff and have a look around this outstanding school.

The courses develop the children’s understanding of business through the interactive use of business tools and all the children have a chance to run a real business together. Courses are tailored to the school’s timetable and there is help available from Biz School to find a company sponsor to help to meet the cost of the course. “When I realised that my own children would pass through school with little or no knowledge of business, I decided to try to change that by starting Biz School”, Managing Director Andrew Kinniburgh told us. The father of three continued “When you watch a group of Year 6s confidently reporting their market research results or carrying out a SWOT analysis it is pretty humbling. The children seem to love Biz School and many have natural business instincts.’’ Biz School Business Manager and mother of two Ruth King, believes the positive impact leaves a lasting impression, “We see the children’s confidence growing and when they present their business plans to the Bears’ Den many have developed a great understanding of business.” She added, “We even have our first spin-off businesses with an 11 year old Grayshott Primary boy setting up a plant stall in his front garden after Biz School finished.”

Men

behaving Dadly! When it comes to parenting, we can be a bit mum-centric at times! But we know what you dad’s put in too, don’t think it goes unnoticed. With father’s day on 15th June, we asked our local dads to share their experience and tips of parenthood with us...

‘‘Everyone has an opinion on how you should raise your child. A lot of the time this is great as - let’s be honest - most of the time we are just making it up as we go along! The reality is that all children are different and what works for one child won’t necessarily work for another. I am a stay at home dad. I’m no expert in fathering, I have a short fuse, which they always seem to ignite and I’m not the most organised - I’ve had to turn around in the middle of the school run many times because I’ve forgotten a lunchbox! I’m not always the most sympathetic human around either (“Oh get up or stop crying, it’s just a little cut!”) It’s true what they say, patience is a virtue - this is one that I’m still learning! My eldest son, Joseph, has additional needs and finds certain things challenging. If we break certain routines he can’t handle it. If we go out my wife will count out our steps one at a time so he’s aware of what our plans are. Me? I get frustrated with him quickly. When he has a break down because we’re going to a shop we haven’t told him about, or because his brothers have broken his train convoy it’s easy for me to snap at him. “Why does it matter?” “Stop being so silly!” Funnily enough he doesn’t respond well to me shouting yet finds my wife’s gentle steady voice more calming! Joes extreme and most of the time he’s fine - yet it seems the same technics work for his brothers as well. It’s a challenge for me not to snap and instead use a calm voice; it’s even harder to admit that my wife’s way is right!! It scares me to think this, but my sons look up to me and want to be like me, especially my eldest. He wants to sit with me and watch the football. He wants to hold my tools when I’m fixing things around the house. He wants to help me when I’m cooking dinner. He wants me to run with him, play with him, catch him, and play fight with him. Whatever I’m doing, one of my sons wants to be there. I’ve always enjoyed my time with the boys and I know I’m extremely lucky to have so much time with them. I know not all dads get to see their sons and daughters every day. I think it’s important to switch off the Xbox (another one I’m guilty of!) and put down the iPhone. You may not be Batman but to your child you’re superhero!’’

Treat them as you like to think your own dad treated you - even if he didn’t. Teach them compassion, and give them a sense of humour. Show them that there is real value in knowing things, so that learning is not just for its own sake. Ray Palmer, Waterlooville - Father of three.

Discipline and respect are crucial. Be a role model – have fun, shared interests and laughter. Be cool! Grant Hawkins, Hampshire - Dad to Stephen 21 and Eleanor 10.

Get out and do things with them, go to the park, bike rides, swimming - Top Gear and take away! You don’t even need to spend much money, it’s the time that seems to count. Darren Holdsworth, Copnor – Dad to Alfie 6.

‘Being a father is wonderful and terrifying, intense and rewarding. For me, the experience varies with sex and age of children. Being the father of a girl who is about to turn 12 is daunting. My daughter is kind, considerate, gentle and polite and people with older daughters, or women who remember the experience are very quick to tell me this will change – and my daughter is changing. Her periods have started. I often wonder if I’m going to begin facing some hormonal, rebellious demon that no longer resembles the sweet and thoughtful girl that at the age of two, sang her very first song (twinkle twinkle little star) whilst laying on my chest.

Get a portfolio of animals and noises for Old MacDonald, or learn more than one nursery rhyme! Half hour power naps get you through to actual bed time. Enjoy every moment, including the crying time. Listen to mum and try and do the jobs you can do before she does them instead of relaxing. Try to give mum a break when you can.

Up until now, she’s had little to no interest in relationships and I must face the fact that this too will change. It’s more about me growing up than her, for in reality, it’s time to put aside the dreams that she may well choose to become a dedicated nun in to adulthood. I have always endeavoured to talk to her as an equal. No ‘cutesy’ patronising voices, lots of hugs and a discourse of openness and honesty. We laugh together and play. If I had any hints or tips, it would just be to remember that this is not ‘your’ person. It is an individual human being that deserves respect and care just like everybody else does. Openness, honesty and care are paramount.

Richard Sills – Dad to Esme, 4 months old.

Scott Jowett, Southsea - Dad to Grace 12 and Arthur 3.

Shaun Harrison, Havant - Dad to Joseph 5, Daniel 4 and Noah 2.
