Over the last three years, Hollycombe’s team of volunteers have overseen the servicing and replacement of many of the rides component parts and repainted the Steam Circus façade and many of the Dobbies. These were the fore-runner of the Gallopers, a later development which saw the introduction of an additional ‘galloping’ motion compared to the Dobbies circular motion. Mr Fields Steam Circus is driven by a Savage steam centre engine and riders are entertained by an 1880s 62 key Gavioli trumpet barrel organ. Hollycombe volunteer Amanda Hollingshead said, ‘It’s a great pleasure to be operating this wonderful ride once more - a true Museum piece which is living and breathing steam once again.’ Hollycombe, Liphook, Hants, GU30 7LP

Summer at Ryde School The summer term is here and Ryde School children at Fiveways Nursery & Pre-prep and the Junior School are busy preparing for the May Fair on Friday 1 May. Keen sailors are practising for the Junior School Sailing Regatta; a competitive inter-house event in which all children take part and budding thespians are rehearsing for the summer musical, ‘The Jungle Book’. This summer, children new to Spanish, Mandarin and Latin, now taught in Fiveways and the Junior School, are continuing to practise their new language skills and a broad mix of interesting extra-curricular activities ensures children think ‘outside the box’. With an exciting academic timetable alongside athletics, cricket and sailing, forest rambles, coastal investigations and numerous trips, the summer term looks set to enliven and enrich pupils’ enquiring minds. News & views Portsmouth in Bloom is underway! Fresh for 2015, the city’s annual gardening competition, Portsmouth in Bloom, is back again. Entries opened mid-April and once again, Bloom has a real community feel. Southsea Greenhouse successfully lead the competition last year for the first time, and they have taken up the challenge again for 2015. Working in partnership with the city council, they are looking to spread the word about how easy it is to enter and they want to encourage as many people as possible to join in. From front gardens and hanging baskets, to environmental projects and business premises - the range of categories means that there is something for everyone. Some tweaking with the categories means that ‘Schools’ has been split into two age groups. ‘Nursery, Infants and Juniors’ is for younger entrants, whilst ‘Secondary and Further Education’ is for older students. “We’ve been warned that getting the older kids involved might be a bit of a challenge,” says Sue Portman, part of
What’s it like to be a stay at home dad? John Adams is a stay at home dad and dad blogger. He is married with two young daughters. He’s also just written his first book ‘A modern father (…and dad blogger)’. Here he tells Families magazine what it’s like to be Mr Daddy Day Care. I’m often asked what it’s like to be a stay at home dad. I like to think a mum would answer in exactly the same way. My life is busy and demanding. It’s also incredibly rewarding as I watch my children grow and develop knowing I’ve helped them along the way. I have the two daughters. Helen is six and Elizabeth is two. Of course having daughters presents me with a few additional challenges as I have had to get used to dealing with girls’ haircare and, certainly with my eldest, had to talk about issues such as menstruation. I may not be best qualified to deal with such things, but as a stay at home dad, I just have to get on and do it! If I were to be totally honest, one of the biggest issues I have to deal with is isolation. Support networks and social networks for people with children,

the organising group. “Once they hit Secondary school, gardening isn’t seen as cool, but we’re hoping to throw down the gauntlet and get them fired up about environmental concerns, recycling and the like, and challenge them to apply that to their school grounds and gardens.” The competition is only possible because of the continued support of the major sponsors, and once again Colas and Portsmouth Water have provided the funds to keep Portsmouth in Bloom going. The organisers are looking for additional funding this year too by offering out the categories for sponsorship by local businesses. There is more information on the website about sponsorship opportunities, as well as how to enter and categories. There is a series of workshops planned for May aimed at helping people who may never have entered before to make the most of their entries. They will also be valuable to more experienced gardeners who would love to pick up a few hints and tips from our gardening experts.

especially young children, are almost exclusively set up for mums. I’m reasonably confident and sociable and I have many friends who are mums and many who are dads. As a dad in my position, however, I think it definitely takes that bit longer until women feel comfortable and happy to approach and speak to you socially. I certainly know of other stay at home dads who have struggled with this. In the past I have had some horrendous experiences. I once took Elizabeth to have some inoculations and the nurse started physically looking round the room before asking where my wife was. It was an odd question; is a man not capable of booking and accompanying his child to an appointment at the doctor’s surgery? When it came to registering Elizabeth’s birth, my wife stayed at home and I took our new-born with me to the registrar’s office. I appreciate the registrar probably meant this as a backhanded compliment, but she told me I was “brave” for going out on my own with my daughter. To her it may have been a compliment, to me it was actually quite offensive. It basically suggested I didn’t have the knowledge to look after her.
professional, I tell them within the first few seconds that I am the one who looks after the kids and that my wife works full time. When I do this, it tends to get any awkwardness out of the way and I find I am treated appropriately. It’s when I don’t do this, I find things can go wrong and I get accused of “babysitting” my own kids (a comment I hear from time to time).
Having had a few similar experiences I learned a trick. Whenever I meet a healthcare, education or childcare

Capturing those party moments We can become like children ourselves when it comes to planning parties - all those Pinterest pages, cake ideas and party games! What starts out a simple idea often results in a ton of effort so it really should be a priority to record all that hard work and fun. With 14 year’s worth of children’s birthday parties, local photographer Moira VenceGunstane of Moira Lizzy Photography gives us some tips on how to capture all that fun and effort.
Capture the details before the guests arrive, it’s the calm before the storm and no matter how tiny these details are they took effort and deserve to be captured. From the cake to invitations, décor, party bags and so on….
Use the light. Flash can be harsh and, if you’re after candid photographs it simply draws attention leading to big cheesy grins. Try to position activities near lots of available light - large window for example. A good opportunity to photograph is whilst the party goers are waiting their turn for an activity – so line them up/seat them facing the light which will reflect into their faces minimising the need for flash.
Blowing out the candles has to be the most iconic birthday image of all. Switch off the flash and use the candle light to illuminate the birthday child. Ask someone else to light the candles and deliver the cake so you can be ready with the trigger when they blow. If you do miss it, just relight and repeat – blowing out the candles is fun so no-one will mind.
Hosting a party can be a stressful. Asking a friend/relative or hiring a professional photographer to document the pictures for you can leave you free to manage the party. You may still be reaching for the wine by the end of the party but handing them this article could help and also mean you can be in some of the pictures too.
8 May/June 2015 | Families Solent East
Tell the whole story by including all the incidentals, guests arriving, piles of shoes, sticky fingers, random hugs, the party-goers expressions and even the debris afterwards.
XXXXXXX
Document guests, cards and present labels so that they can remember who was there when they look back on the pictures in years to come. Display it! Group pictures together to create a storyboard of the day, create a photobook, make thank you cards using the pictures and print for prosperity so you can look back on these wonderful events for years to come. Don’t forget to put the camera down and take time to enjoy the day too!
3 top party providers
Include perspective by taking pictures at the child’s level, from above, close up and wider shots of the party too. It’s an easy way to add interest to the images and by moving around you’ll burn off some of that birthday cake too!

Home life
‘
It is a life lesson. There needs to be give and take at meal times.
Why we don’t need to cook ‘children's meals' By Kathryn Mewes – Author of ‘The 3 day Nanny’ It is very common for children to like ‘dry food’. By this I mean nuggets, fish fingers, chips, potato wedges, pesto pasta and sausages. While there is nothing terribly wrong with any of these meals, at some stage your child needs to expand. There is a whole world of exciting food beyond ‘children’s menus’! I suggest these meals are on the weekly menu and they are enjoyed but then there are also meals to suit you. It is a life lesson. There needs to be give and take at meal times. Everyone needs to see their favourite meal once a week. Mealtime can and should be for the entire family – not just the children.
The meal time goal I know, I know, I can hear you say: “My children eat too early, they eat food I don’t want to eat, my husband/wife is home so late.” The aim is that you prepare just one meal for dinnertime. The children eat and you have a small portion with them. When your husband/wife arrives home they have the same meal. A portion has been set aside for them. I believe that it is so important for children to realize that they cannot have their ‘favourite’ meal each and every day. My ethos is simple ‘A meal is prepared
16 May/June 2015 | Families Solent East
and there are 2 options – Take it or Leave it!’ Once this attitude is adopted and you remain consistent you will find that the children adjust and adapt to your ‘new way’ at mealtimes. I think that there is too much emphasis now on children having to eat all of their meal. This is what leads us to only giving them food we know they will eat. It is important to realize that your children may leave some of their meal but as they start to realize this meal is going to appear at least once a fortnight they will adjust. Slowly but surely they will ‘tuck in’. The key is that your children are seeing a variety of foods and you are eating with them.
Creating a meal plan I often suggest creating a ‘meal plan’ so that everyone knows what is on offer that night. You can alter the menu plan every week or have 2 – 3 that you simply rotate.
• • • • •
The food shopping can be done once a week, ordered online for ease. Everyone knows what is going to be served. You don’t have to think each morning about the ‘evening meal’. You are only cooking one meal for the family. You can see an overview of your families general diet.
’
Your questions answered “What if they won’t eat it?” Please don’t expect your family to instantly adapt. They will ‘dig their heels in’ before accepting the permanent change. If a meal is not eaten simply allow fruit for dessert and a cup of milk to line their stomach before bed. The most important thing is not to offer them something else – you will then be back to where you once were. “We all have different tastes.” You should be able to create a meal where there is something for everyone. For example a curry. You might find one family member prefers the rice, the other the vegetables and the other picks out the meat. In time they will expand on this and start to eat more of the meal. A salad can always be served as an accompaniment to cater for all. “I don’t want to eat early with my children.” The important thing is that if you are introducing change you need to lead by example. You can have a small portion, or mainly vegetables while sitting with the children. I have ALWAYS found that children behave far better at the table when an adult is sitting with them, ideally eating not just observing.
For further information and advice on guiding your child at mealtimes please purchase the book The 3 Day Nanny by Kathryn Mewes or go to her website to find out about her bespoke service www.bespokenanny.com
