Been there, done that! Ten mistakes that parents make when they’re new to school life By Liat Hughes-Joshi

Mums and dads of older children share their top tips on what they would have told themselves when they were new to the school run.

Complaining to the teacher based on what your child told you happened…only it didn’t… You take what your child has said as gospel, march into see the teacher, only to fall flat on your (red with embarrassment) face when you discover your little one has got completely the wrong end of the stick. Even the most switched on, truthful child can mishear or misunderstand sometimes. Stay open-minded and communicate to the teacher that you appreciate what you’ve been told might not be what actually occurred!

Sweating the small stuff An interest in how your child is doing is healthy but getting overly-wrapped up with the minutiae of reading levels is less so. Who could tackle the hardest spellings at the age of five will not go on their CV, after all. As Emma, mum to Jamie, 12, and Lucy, 9, puts it “I realise now that who was sitting on which table or reading which books wasn’t anywhere near as important as I thought it was then. If your child is progressing and enjoying school, try not to worry.”

Getting embroiled in school-gate competitiveness Engaging with ‘Competitive Mum’ (there’s one in every class…) is a lose-lose situation. If your child is ahead of hers, she’ll hate you for it. If hers has one up on yours, you’ll end up inwardly fuming at her smugness. Do not participate in her FBI-style interrogations about whether your child has done grade 42 piano or is taking their platinum swimming badge yet. If all else fails, adopt a vacant look and mutter “the reading scheme – don’t understand it”, or change the subject quickly – the weather, last night’s Eastenders, anything but school.

Freaking out about friendship fall-outs Reception children switch friends quicker than you can ask ‘who’s your best buddy?’ It’s completely normal and bust-ups are quickly forgotten. Provide a shoulder to cry on and offer

6 September/October 2015 | Families Solent East

reassuring advice. You could also arrange playdates with other classmates to build bonds. Cath, recalls how daughter Ava, 7, fell out with her best friend: ‘I was ready to storm around to her house. Then I realised they change best friends every day. It wasn’t a big deal for her. “

Tackling other parents about problems Some little horror has been merciless to your child and your protective instincts are kicking in. But do not head over to give the other mum what for. She could have a different version of events and you’re unlikely to change her mind about who said or did what to whom. There’s also scope for a parental fall-out that will endure long after the kids make up. Cue an awkward few years at the school gate… If the situation’s serious, raise it with the teacher and let them sort things out.

Losing sight of the fact the teacher has 29 other pupils to look after At ‘big school’, you aren’t going to be able to have the daily chat with staff you might have been used to at nursery or with a childminder. There could be 30 children in the class - if every parent asked for that ‘quick five minute catch up’ on a daily basis, ‘Miss’ would be there for 2.5 hours. Sangeeta, mum to Maya, 6, says: “there’s an element of ‘no news is good news’. If they’re struggling or misbehaving, the teacher will tell you. You get used to not knowing so much about what they do.”

Expecting your child to be chatty and delighted to see you at 3pm Even little ones who were fine with full-time nursery can have the stuffing knocked out of them by starting school. With so much to learn, by home time many reception kids (and teachers!) are exhausted. Alison, mum of Jack, 7, advises: “I wanted to catch up with him but he used to be so grouchy. Don’t sign up for any afterschool activities initially. Lots of early nights helped, too. Oh, and always have a snack waiting for them – he still comes out starving every day”.

Not teaching the basics Ask a reception teacher what they would like their new charges to be able to do and it probably won’t be about letters or counting. What they would like is for your child to be able to dress and undress for PE, use the loo independently and maybe recognise their name on their coat peg/ belongings.

Not naming absolutely everything of importance! There’s a black hole in every primary school into which children’s belongings fall, never to be seen again. If you want to maximise chances of getting lost items back, add their name to everything. And be very wary when your child asks if they can take their favourite teddy/ toy into show the other children, as there’s a chance it will never be seen again. Liat Hughes Joshi is a parenting journalist and the author of four books including 'New Old-fashioned Parenting' and '‎How to Unplug Your Child' (both published by Summersdale) and Raising Children: The Primary Years (Pearson).

Q: What’s

your favourite place to take the kids?

‘‘It would have to be the beach on a sunny day. Add children to fresh air, a sandy beach, the sea and a bucket and spade and you have the perfect recipe for a fun family day out.’’

Q:

2013 Issue 46 | May/June o.uk www.familiessolenteast.c

How do you relax?

‘‘Walking my dog really helps to clear my head. He gets walked in the morning before I start work and this sets me up for the day. I'm strict on bedtime routines and I try to ensure I have a couple of hours to myself in the evening when my daughter has gone to bed. A good book that makes you laugh is a great way to lose yourself; I'm reading Ruby Wax, 'How do you want me?' and I'd thoroughly recommend it.’’

Q:

What has surprised you the most about being a parent?

Q:

What’s your top tip for busy mums?

‘‘Probably the amount of baby wipes I get through!!! What did they do years ago without baby wipes? I carry a packet in my bag at all times - I've handed them to other parents when their child has decided to projectile vomit at the park, I don't recommend giving a small child an ice-cream without them and they also come in very handy when you need to improvise with an emergency toilet!‘‘ ‘‘My top tips for busy mums would be...remember to slow things down and remember it's ok to say no to people! And remember to do what makes YOU happy, from time to time. Mum's can get lost in this maelstrom of striving to please everyone else...I think it's important that you take time out to do what gives you personal enjoyment and pleasure whether that's gardening, reading a good book, meeting up with friends or getting a manicure - remember it's ok to do things that make you happy.’’ Chat to Sharon through social media at: facebook.com/FSEmagazine, Twitter @FamiliesSolentE or email Sharon@familiessolenteast.co.uk

The term ‘Learning Difficulty’ tends to strike terror into parent’s hearts. It can bring up all kinds of worry and guilt about how they ‘got it’ and whether they could have done more to prevent it. The truth is that everyone is different, and everyone learns in different ways. Everyone will have strengths and weaknesses, and really it is much better to identify them at an early age and work on them. Here are summaries of some of the more common difficulties.

Dyslexia

Dyscalculia

Dyslexia is the most well known and is any difficulty with reading. Of course, everyone finds reading difficult to some extent at first, so really it is all about degree. Many children will have some problems with ‘acquiring language at the word level’ as it is defined. They may have poor spelling or write their letters back to front. Most children overcome this quickly, but some children get stuck and find it difficult to make progress. Summary: Problems reading, writing, spelling and/or speaking.

Much more widely recognized than it used to be is Dyscalculia, which is a kind of ‘number blindness’ or difficulty with numbers. Some children just seem to find it hard to memorise number facts (2+2 =4) or have terrible problems with money or time. They may copy down numbers incorrectly when answering questions, and can’t seem to see patterns that might be obvious to others. Summary: Difficulty with math problems, understanding time, using money.

Dysgraphia Not to be confused with this is Dysgraphia which is problems with writing. This could be a broad range of problems with everything from handwriting and forming letters, to organising and making sentences when writing. Summary: Difficulty with writing, handwriting, Spelling and organising ideas.

Dyspraxia (Sensory Integration Disorder) If your child tends to fall over, have trouble balancing or buttoning a shirt and other practical skills, this may be described as Dyspraxia. This may also lead to problems with holding a pencil or neat handwriting, but it is a more global problem with how the brain processes and coordinates the body. Summary: Difficulty with fine motor skills, hand–eye coordination, balance, manual dexterity.

Dysphasia/Aphasia Dysphasia or aphasia is difficulty with the spoken language. How we convey information through language is very complicated, but some children find it hard to tell a story or understand directions and instructions. These children may not be able to find the right word and won’t be able to chat fluently. Summary: Problems understanding spoken language, poor reading comprehension. The good news about all these issues is that people who study the brain now believe that it is much more ‘plastic’ or able to change than they previously thought. The brain can learn to overcome some difficulties with the right inputs. Therefore it is great to identify issues early and start helping your child to overcome them as soon as possible. Learning difficulties, and their accompanying academic challenges, can lead to low self-esteem, isolation, and behaviour problems, but they don’t have to. You can counter these things by creating a strong support system for children with learning difficulties and helping them learn to express themselves, deal with frustration, and work through challenges. With thanks to Howard Jones of Kip McGrath Portsmouth for providing us with this article. Kip McGrath Education Centre sees children at many different points in their education. Dark Nights

what to say when your child claims 'I'm scared' at bedtime By Kathryn Mewes I am sure you remember as a child the ‘delay tactics’ used to prevent bedtime. Times have changed but children haven’t. They all push their boundaries and often the word ‘scared’ causes a strong reaction from a parent. The more you react the more the word ‘scared’ is used. The dark is a baby’s favourite place and this doesn’t change as children get older. Unfortunately sometimes we make the mistake. We are the ones that plant the seed in the child’s head. We innocently make statements such as: “Don’t worry, I am here.” “I will leave the landing light on and then you will be OK.” “It is OK the dark won’t hurt you.” “There is nothing to be scared of.” By doing this we are flagging up the possibility for concern. This alarms the child and before you know it they are saying: “I am scared, you need to leave the light on!”, “Don’t go, I need you here.”

What is the best approach? Many children reach the stage of wanting to ‘change up’ the bedtime routine by demanding more stories or the light on, the door open, a drink, a snack – believe me I have heard them all!

have a chat in the pitch dark. It is best to talk through the bedtime routine with your child once they are aged 18 months or older.

Talk while they’re in the bath “Now, after bath time we are going to stay upstairs. We are going into your bedroom to have 2 stories. After story time we are going to have a big hug and then I will say ‘See you at breakfast time’. The light will be turned off and I will close the door as I leave.”

To children aged 3 and older let them know: ‘The only time children grow is when they are asleep.’ ‘If there is light in your bedroom your brain tells your body it is daytime and then it is difficult to fall to sleep.’ ‘The moment the room is dark your body relaxes, falls to sleep and starts to grow!’ It is so important to remain consistent. The moment you start letting your child dictate the bedtime routine things can start to go terribly wrong.

When they claim they are ‘Scared of the dark’ Sit in the room during the early evening with your child. They lay on their bed, you sit on the floor and

Talk about day trips gone by or family holiday memories. This gives them something to think about when bedtime comes around. Explain to them about how our body can relax far easier in the dark. State the fact that the bedroom is the same whether in darkness or light. Nothing changes when the light turns off. Say to them “I love the darkness, my body instantly starts to relax.”

What to say to their comments as you leave They say: “I need the light on.” Reply promptly: “Nothing to see at bedtime. Remember, your body grows when you sleep.” They say: “Stay with me.” Reply: “Lay and relax and think of the day we went to the zoo. Name all the animals in your head. I love you very much, see you at breakfast time.” They say: “I am scared.” Reply: “You are in your beautiful room, your cosy bed. That is a silly word to use at bedtime. Lay and relax and think of everyone in your class. Try and say all of their names and then all the teachers names in the school. See you at breakfast time.” The key is to keep calm and not to over complicate the situation. When your child claims they are scared promptly reassure them We need to turn our lights off to the world – that is how we rest and grow. Halloween ideas

Crafts and Decorations Trick or Treat Etiquette By Justina Gapper

If you and your children are going trick or treating for the first time, here are a few guidelines.

What age can children start? There’s no minimum age! Many parents enjoy dressing up and venturing out with their toddlers, whilst others take babies along in prams with older siblings.

What are the rules? Only approach homes that have a visible “invitation” – whether it’s a pumpkin, lantern or other Halloween decorations displayed. Don’t knock if the lights are off and don’t knock more than once. Alternatively, you may decide to knock only on doors of friends and neighbours that you have pre-warned of the visit!

Have fun with a few simple art and craft activities which will transform your home into a witch’s cavern or haunted house this Halloween. Add a lantern and some creepy treats to create the perfect setting for a spooky supper!

Halloween Lantern Create a stunning but easy-to-make Halloween lantern to decorate your garden or window. Amanda Wright from Storytelling Adventures in Richmond and Twickenham (www.bridgeac.com) tells us how.

Materials Glass jar, 2 pipe cleaners or pieces of garden wire, glue, tissue paper, patterned wallpaper or wrapping paper, scissors.

Instructions 1) Cut the patterned paper and tissue paper into strips of the same size. 2) Cut shapes into the patterned paper 3) Stick the tissue paper onto the back of the patterned paper and then stick the paper strips onto the jar. 4) Twist the two wires together into a crucifix shape. Turn the crucifix upside down so that the long end or ‘tail’ points straight up. 5) Place the horizontal wire that forms the cross of the crucifix around the rim of the jar, twisting the ends together to secure. Then bend the long’ tail’ up and over the top of the jar. Twist the 'tail' to the horizontal wire to secure the handle. 6) Place a tea light inside and your lantern is ready!

What if my children don’t like the treat? Make sure your children are briefed to say “please” and “thank you” in addition to “trick or treat,” plus they should try to be appreciative of any treat they are given.

What’s the trick all about? The word "trick" refers to the "threat" to perform mischief on the homeowners or their property if no treat is given. These days it is uncommon to have raw egg splattered over your driveway by pranksters, but it’s safest not to answer the door to raucous groups of older teenagers, or if you suspect your visitors are not wellintentioned.

If you are asked for a “trick,” what should you do? One harmless but funny idea is to get the homeowner to close their eyes and put their hand in a witch’s hat or toy cauldron filled with a gooey mess or plastic spiders, rubbery worms and insects.

Toilet roll characters! Create mummies and bats out of toilet rolls, black paint and some bandage or toilet paper. Get loads more craft ideas at mollymoocrafts.com

Hand print Spiders! Create these simple handprint spiders – cut them out and hang them around the house with string. Make it a family activity to create spiders of all different sizes!
