Welcome Back… I have a confession to make. When it comes to sport, I’m a pretty pushy parent. This revelation will come as no surprise to those who know me. If you’ve sat beside me at a sports day, or endured a netball match in my company then you will know, I’m a shouter. As a result, Isobel has decided to throw herself into swimming. “I can put a cap on and then put my head underwater so I can’t hear you,” she explains. I’m trying not to take it personally, and have asked for a megaphone for Christmas. I simply like to think of myself as my daughters’ greatest cheerleader. There are some children who display a natural talent for sport and need no encouragement. They’re the children who make every team and leave each sports day victorious. The real challenge is getting the reluctant majority involved and that’s our job. London 2012 is a fantastic way to introduce even the most sport shy child to a new challenge. Watching the world’s greatest athletes compete right here in Britain is bound to inspire. We’ve got some super and cost effective ideas to get your child active this summer. From trampolining to tennis, golf to gymnastics there is something to spark every child’s interest. Sport is the way so many children find themselves. A bad day in the classroom can so easily be forgotten when you’re part of a winning team. No Wii game will ever be able to replicate the thrill of a real life sporting victory. Not everyone is going to be an Olympic athlete, but taking part in a sport can teach your child teamwork, discipline and commitment. To me the real spirit of sport is not in the medals won or the goals scored. It’s the way you win and lose. One of the proudest moments I’ve had was watching my daughter get beaten into second place at school swimming gala. She was within fingertips, but a super young athlete called Molly pipped her at the post. As Isobel took off her cap, she leaned across the rope that divided them and they gave each other a high five and left the pool laughing. I’m pretty sure I’m not the mother of a future Olympian, but I know I’m the mother of a great sportswoman. I think I’ll treat myself to that megaphone… Sarah Butters

Diary of a

IMPERFECT MUM…

THE WORLD

DAD… FAMILIES LEEDS’ columnist Claire Bottomley reflects on some peace on a recent trip. Hola! Yes, you’ve guessed it, we’ve just returned from a family holiday – en Mallorca. However, let me reassure you, issues of child-nurturing have never been far from our minds. In fact, the educational development of our young son was crucial to our choice of destination. Allow me to explain. When I say we, it is really Señor Bottomley who must take credit for this particular parenting area. He is determined to teach our young son Spanish. For well over a year now, he has built the three-year-old’s vocabulary up so that phrases such as “Buenas noches” fall naturally from his lips at bedtime and, “hasta luego” is their regular parting when each goes his separate way to work or nursery. It’s raised the odd eyebrow among the other mummies and daddies of Leeds, let me tell you. And there was an air of surprise from the travel agent when informed that we would only journey to a Spanish-speaking country, on account of enhancing the toddler’s conversational skills. So there we were in the homeland of the Spanish language, enthusiastic pupil and mentor at the ready. A perfect opportunity to complete an intensive programme of linguistic assimilation. You really do get out what you put in with children don’t you? So, put in a fiercely serious, committed and ambitious tutor, and you get a fiercely serious, committed and ambitious child – ambitious to monopolise your every waking hour and committed to gaining your full attention 24-7. Yes, quality time with daddy rather tipped over into obsessive behaviour for the youngster, so by the end of the holiday poor Mr B was having to sneak off to the toilet lest he was trailed by his crazed stalker. The boy child wanted nothing to do with his poor old mother and primary carer for 50 weeks of the year. So there I was, my maternal charms cast aside. Well, I’m a rudimentary, school-girl French speaker if anything anyway. So what’s a mummy to do other than take what solace is possible in peace and quiet, limitless sunshine, beautiful surroundings and a good stock of books on my Kindle? Ah, but that’s a distant memory for all of us now. Daddy’s back to work for a good rest, I’m back on breakfast duty and the boy is having to re-adjust to multi-tasking, imperfect parenting. But how do you say that in Spanish?

It’s getting competitive in the house of our Dad columnist Jim Cardwell, but there’s no chance of a gold medal. With the Olympics as our backdrop we’ve been getting into the competitive spirit with board games; or more exactly, with one particular board game Monopoly. It was an impulse purchase by the Short Suffering Wife on a weekly supermarket shop. She stuck it in the trolley thinking nostalgically of evenings with her family as a child, whilst also seeking to encourage the kids to develop their counting skills. (She tends to do more thinking about the kids’ development than me.) Needless to say I was initially sceptical but my acceptance was quickly won over by appealing to my scrooge-like tendencies (this unplanned purchase really was “a bargain”). Our games tend to reflect real life such that everyone’s happy when the property portfolio is growing steadily and the rent payments are rolling in. Learning to lose gracefully is a challenge for Boy Wonder when he has to mortgage his properties or sell a beloved train station or two because he needs the cash to stay in the game. Thankfully, the upset does not extend to Little Miss Fidget who appears to be reaping all the rewards of participation (counting, reading, family interaction, etc.) and not feeling the same “don’t take my stations” angst as my son. In fact, there has been a spin-off benefit for the Fidget since it has helped her with her concentration – over one hour engaged in a single activity was previously unheard of. Of all the board games we have tried to date with Boy Wonder and Little Miss Fidget this is perhaps the most enthralling and the kids particularly relish playing. There are a few life/home finance lessons that the kids will hopefully pick up along the way such as understanding the value of money and maybe this could be the start of their own interest in the national obsession with property. Ideally, in addition to providing enjoyment I want my kids to be taking part in activities that develop them mentally, socially and physically. I think Monopoly scores on a couple of these and, as a late 20th century philosopher (Mr Meatloaf) once said,“two out of three ain’t bad”. The lack of physicality means that I suspect it won’t make it into the Olympics any time soon. That’s a shame. My kids are getting quite good at it and, more generally, as observed by those cheeky Australians, we Brits do quite well at sports involving sitting down.

A good part of Kathryn Parry-Brown’s time is being takenI up with preparations for a fairly spectacular birthdayI party. Today she is personalising a number of champagneI glasses for an afternoon tea party that the birthday girlI will never forget. Then there’s the canapés to make andI some elegant mini cakes.I “We can do anything!” says Kathryn from Horsforth. “When we have the theme of the party we tailor a host of activities and make it a party they’ll never forget.” Kathryn launched her business Arty Animals 6 years ago whilst she was living in London. There she ran high quality holiday workshops and bespoke birthday parties. Since relocating to Leeds 2 years ago with her children, she’s been planning the launch of Arty Animals Yorkshire and this summer she’ll host her first parties. “We’ve run Harry Potter parties, Peppa Pig parties. We’ve run events themed around Dr Who, Hello Kitty, Batman. Whatever the child wants, we will create something truly special.” Arty Animals combines some of a child’s favourite activities – craft, cooking and art. The parties run for an hour and a half. It’s difficult to give a menu of what the company can offer, because Kathryn and her team can do just about anything.

“When we did the Harry Potter party, we made sorting hats and themed biscuits. When we did a ballet party, we brought in a dancer and made nutcracker cakes,” explains Kathryn enthusiastically. It’s clear that Kathryn can’t wait to show Leeds what Arty Animals can offer. As well as the bespoke parties, there’s the holiday workshops to look forward to early next year. She’s keen to find the perfect venue to maintain the quality of the London workshops. The format will remain the same though – quality activities in a safe environment. “When I launched in London, I wanted to achieve the sort of place I’d want to send my own children,” Kathryn explains. “Yes, it is a business, but first and foremost it’s about the children. I’d rather have them making nicer things and make less profit. That’s the ethos of Arty Animals.” Every workshop week is themed with activities like bread making, gourmet

biscuit decoration and if the weather permits a team BBQ. There’s art and craft activities throughout the day as well as a cosy quiet corner when children need some time out. “What parents liked about the workshops was the variety,” says Kathryn. “Children don’t want to spend 5 hours baking, or 5 hours on craft. With Arty Animals we bring it all together and I can’t wait to do that here in Yorkshire.” For more information on Arty Animals birthday parties, contact Kathryn on 07982 239 377.

Caterpillars (0-18 months) Jubilee Hall, Rawdon Thursday 10.30am Siblings go FREE

It’s fitting weather for a trip to the rainforest, and that’s where Louise Watmough is taking her little caterpillars this wet summer morning. Before the group head off on their adventure, there’s the small matter of the giant sleeping caterpillar. Once Colin the Caterpillar has been ‘poked’ awake by this group of excited babies, it’s time for the class to begin. Louise and her colleague Rachel Elias launched these pre-school music sessions here in Leeds earlier this year. Judging by the popularity of today’s class in Rawdon, word has spread quickly. “We describe our class as 40 minutes of madness,” says Louise. “We use puppets, instruments Our exciting designer brands and bubbles to create a themed class. There’s a story every week. This week we’re going down include No Added Sugar, Bebe, to the jungle.” Frugi, Noa Noa,Toffee Moon, There are some unusual animals on this jungle trek but the youngsters don’t seem to mind. Although the children Arriving soon... Darcy Brown, are having a great time, they’re also learning as Rachel explains. I Love Gorgeous and Mini A Ture “Our classes are educational. While there is a clear structure, the children are also free to explore their surroundings, and enjoy the music in their own way. “They’re not sheep,” says Louise. “These children are individuals and we want to encourage their personalities and we want them to learn. We don’t make them sit with their mum. We want them to move around.” With the 40 minutes of madness nearly at an end, the children prepare to put Colin the Caterpillar to bed. After a busy morning in the jungle, Colin and his friends are ready for a sleep. I wonder if he’ll wake up a butterfly when they return next week. ARTBUGS WHAT? WHERE? WHEN?

Stay and Create Artbugs Studio, Stanningley LS28 6AU Tuesday 10.15am

Catherine Campbell is preparing for her Tuesday morning toddler session by filling five trays with shaving foam. She lines up bottle after bottle of food colouring to add to the messy fun. Before long the door of this bright studio bursts open and the children quickly put on aprons and get ready to sing their Artbugs welcome song. Then it’s time to get creative. Catherine has been running art and craft sessions for children for 2 years. Earlier this year she moved to this permanent studio and now runs workshops for children from 2 – 15 years old. She says the space gives her more flexibility than a village hall. “Children don’t always want to do what’s laid out, explains Catherine. “Because this is a dedicated studio, we can give children the choice. If they don’t want to do the planned activity, we get out something else! That’s not a problem today. All the children are keen to have a go at pouring the marbling ink into a basin of water, and then using a straw to blow bubbles. Once each child has dipped their paper in to create a pattern, it’s over to the table to get messy with the shaving foam.

“Some weeks we do collage painting, some weeks we do clay,â€? says Catherine. “This week we are using the ink, shaving foam and some food colouring to make Under the Sea prints.â€? The children use straws, paint brushes and their hands to transform the shaving foam into a swirling mess of colour. Meanwhile out comes glitter and glue and before long the creations come to life. There’s a lot of mess and there’s a lady wearing white trousers who is rather regretting her decision, but the mini Monets are having a great time. “At home parents tend to limit creativity because of the mess,â€? says Catherine who is mum to 3 year old Ella and Louis who’s 1. “Here parents can let their child’s imagination run wild and forget about the clearing up – that’s my job. I’m an artist so these classes are about passing on my knowledge and skills to the children, so they too can develop a love of art.â€? With the sea prints drying, it’s time to get patriotic and the children begin decorating crowns and flags. The paint isn’t dry before Dylan decides to crown himself King of Artbugs and it isn’t long before the rest of the group follow. It looks like Catherine and her Artbugs class gets the royal seal of approval! Artbugs Stay and Create sessions run on a Tuesday from 10.15am. There’s also a Saturday morning Art Club for children from 2 years old. Sessions from 10am – 11.15am for 5 – 11 year olds and from 11.30am – 12.30pm for 2 – 4 year olds. Catherine also runs After School Clubs across Leeds. www.artbugs.co.uk • 07790 594 915

TEN Ways To Keep Learning

Alive This Summer! When school’s out, learning doesn’t have to stop. Young minds need to be kept active during the Summer months so they’re ready to go back to learning in September. We’ve asked Dawn Scargill from First Class Learning to give us some activities to help keep your child engaged, interested and feeling confident in time for the new school term. 1.

Mini Olympics – Organise your own mini Olympics with family and friends in your local park or back garden. Having the children keep track of the times, distances and winners is a fun way for them to work with numbers and reinforce key numeracy skills. 2. Extreme Reading Competition – Get together with a group of friends with children and have each child get a photograph of them reading in the most unusual place they can think of. This could be at the top of a mountain, in the sea or at the Olympics. The most unusual place wins. 3. A-mazing – Mazes are an excellent way of helping your child with numeracy. Exploring direction and logic, mazes extend children’s classroom numeracy skills in a fun and interactive setting. Ask your child to draw directions as they go and then test them out yourself! 4. Survey skills – Try doing an Olympics survey! It could be on anything Olympics related: medals won, personal bests or world records broken. Your child could record their results as pictures, tallies or as numbers, and even put their results in a graph. 5. Maths on the Move – Take some pads and pens and when passing a sign, your children have to add up the miles to all the destinations and write down their answers. The winner is the child with the most correct answers written down by the end of the journey. If signs are few and far between, your children could try adding the numbers from number plates instead. Perfect for long car journeys. 6. Olympics Bingo – Find 12 Olympic sports-themed pictures (e.g. football, boxing glove, basketball, tennis racket, diving board) and make a copy of each image. Make a bingo card by sticking one set of images on a card in rows of 4. The remaining set of images will be the bingo calling cards. Repeat this to make a bingo card and calling cards for each player (remembering to make each bingo card slightly different). Each player gets a bingo card and 12 counters. The calling cards are placed face down and the caller picks them up in turn. The player who covers their bingo card with counters first is the winner. 7. Shape Spotting – Whilst watching the Olympics, see how many countries’ flags your children can spot, which contain a triangle. How many different types of triangle are there? Talk about measuring the angles and calculating the area. Try this with other shapes such as circles and rectangles. 8. Character games – All children are natural actors, so asking them to become a character shouldn’t be too hard! Your child could choose their favourite bird and find things in the surroundings that it might use to build its nest or things it might eat. 9. Use your Summer to prepare for

BIG SCHOOL A lot changes when your child is about to start school. Suddenly he or she seems a lot older and you realise how fast all this “bringing up children” stuff really goes. One second you were holding a newborn, the next (or so it seems) you’re looking for school uniform. Starting school means returning to a place you left a long time ago, but this time in a completely different capacity. As this new adventure looms, what can you do to prepare? There’s an entire summer before the school run gets going; use it wisely. My first tip would be not to stress about your child’s abilities. He or she does not need to be able to read or write before starting school, although it would be good if he was well acquainted with the alphabet and could pick out his name. If you want to help in terms of school preparation, point out words (in books and on signs when you are out and about), but concentrate on lower case letters, as this is what your child will be learning first. I think it’s actually more useful to prepare a child, not so much for learning, but for school itself. You can do this with some really

Maths and English Study Programmes

If your child is starting school in September, there’s plenty of ways you can spend the next few weeks getting them ready. Sarah Ebner, author of THE STARTING SCHOOL SURVIVAL GUIDE offers her tips.

lovely “starting school” books which you can read over the summer weeks. Choosing a book together, whether in a library or bookshop, can be very special. If you are looking for some recommendations, try “I am Too Absolutely Small For School” by Lauren Child, “Topsy and Tim Start School” by Jean and Gareth Adamson and “Kevin Goes to School” by Liesbet Slegers. “Starting School” by Janet Ahlberg and Allan Ahlberg is also a lovely story, which follows children through their first term at school and gives lots of detail about what goes on. Hopefully these books will capture your child’s imagination and make him or her genuinely excited about “big school”. You should also talk, talk and talk some more about school (and in positive terms!) whenever there’s an opportunity. This may sound a bit obvious, but it can actually take some children a long time to grasp the impending change. Talking can really help to embed the concept of school as a reality in a child’s mind. For example, you can do this whilst reading, saying,“I wonder what kinds of books they’ll have for you at school, I think they’ll have a lot of different ones to choose from.” You can also show the reality of school by sharing photos. The school website may have these if you haven’t been sent any hard copies, and of course you can take a walk to the school itself and have a look. Some parents and children enjoy making their own “starting school” book or poster too. Another thing you can do together is role play, either with siblings, parents or even toys. It’s easy to make-believe a classroom. It can be a big jump to go from a small nursery to a big class of 30, so if you know other children who are going to be in your child’s

class, arrange some play dates or gettogethers in the park. The school may have a list that they can send around, or the PTA (Parent Teacher Association – you’re going to need to learn this new vocabulary) may organise some events too. Don’t be scared to get in touch; you’ll also find it easier if you recognise a friendly face at the school gate. I’d also recommend using the time over the summer to help your child to get used to eating in groups. They’ll have to do this at school so try to sit down and eat as a family. This may sound like a minor issue, but some children find this transition one of the hardest of all, and simply stop eating properly while at school. Starting school is a great adventure, for your child and the whole family. But do make sure you enjoy the summer before they start. After that, it’s full steam ahead. The Starting School Survival Guide: everything you need to know when your child starts school is published by White Ladder and is available from www.amazon.co.uk. WIN an Easy 2 Name off to school set We’ve teamed up with Easy 2 Name to make the first term at school a whole lot easier. We’re giving away 5 Off to School kits which make naming the endless amount of clothing and school supplies a whole lot easier. Capture the BEST

sporting memories |Photographing a sporting occasion| |can be difficult. So often the moment| |has passed by the time you’ve taken| |off the lens cap. We want this Sports| |Day to be the one you get the perfect| |picture of your child in action so| |we’ve called on the experts at| |Robling Photography.|

A

NTHONY ROBLING loves sport. He’s also one of the most engaging and entertaining photographers Families Leeds has worked with. Alongside providing us with some truly memorable cover shots over the past few issues, Anthony and his partner Julie have been commissioned by local sports teams to capture some great sporting memories. “It combines my love of photography and my love of sport so it’s perfect,” says Anthony. “It’s so different from photographing a wedding for example – although sometimes those occasions do resemble a rugby scrum!” Robling Photography has worked with sports clubs including Kirk Deighton Rangers and Collingham Cricket Club. They aren’t there to produce a traditional team shot, they’re there to capture the action. “So often with portrait photography, we spend time creating the action to get the right shot,” explains Anthony. “Sport happens completely naturally so you can watch and enjoy the sport through your viewfinder and capture the moments along the way.” The couple are spending the summer photographing fixtures and tournaments across North and West Yorkshire and have a reputation for producing a quality product proud parents want to purchase. It’s a skill to capture individual images in a fast paced fixture, but it’s something Robling Photography are managing to do time and again. “So many event photographers shoot poor quality, badly composed shots. Our idea is to give parents and their children pictures of a professional quality – the type they’d see of their sporting heroes!” TIPS FOR SHOOTING THE PERFECT SPORTING PICTURE 1. Isolate the subject from the background. A crowded touchline is distracting. 2. Don’t shoot run of the mill team shots. Get the children running, cheering or jumping to celebrate. 3. Concentrate on catching the point where the action appears frozen in time. Capture that, and you’ll have an image to last forever. 4. Use a high shutter speed to capture the moment. If your camera doesn’t let you do that, use the sports mode instead. 5. Don’t forget the kids who don’t win their matches. They’ll be feeling flat. Make them feel as important as the winners by snapping them too.

Did you know that ¼ of all children never play outside? We’ve got some great ideas for getting out and about this summer, regardless of the weather. We’ve also thrown in a few indoor options that will challenge you to try something you’ve never done before. Make this the summer you learn a new skill, or try something new!

ILEARN TO FLY A KITEI When was the last time you flew a kite? Head to a hill or even better, to the beach and unleash your own set of wings. It’s a team effort – you’ll need someone to hold your kite while you unwind the string and prepare for take off. Treasures of Wetherby has a great selection of Disney kites for just £3.99, but Families Leeds has invested in a Harrier Kite (£12.99). A great kite flying spot is the ever windy Harewood House. www.treasurestoys.co.uk

IPLAY IN THE RAINI If the heavens open, celebrate! Pull on your wellies and a raincoat and follow in the footsteps of Peppa Pig by going puddle jumping. Try creating some rain art by dripping food colouring on a paper plate. Get wrapped up and walk round the garden with it and watch the patterns swirl. If you fancy something slightly less colourful but a lot more messy, make a mud pie. Yes they’ll need a bath afterwards, but without spending a penny, you’ll have given them an afternoon of fun.

If you fancy getting out and about then head to Thwaite Mills where they’re hosting their own Teddy Bears Picnic on Saturday 19th August from 11.30am. www.leeds.gov.uk

ILEARN HOW TO SKIM STONESI Can you beat the record of 51 bounces? Find a flat, light palm sized stone. Throw it with as much force as possible, from as low as possible. The average person gets about 8 bounces, but with our tips, we think you’ll do even better. Our favourite skimming spot has got to be Bolton Abbey. There’s plenty of stones to choose from and perfect water to skim! If you head up there on a Monday, Wednesday or a Friday you’ll be able to enjoy holiday activities and family fun. www.boltonabbey.com

IGO OUTDOOR SWIMMINGI If the sun does come out, pack up a picnic and head to Ilkley Lido. This outdoor swimming pool is a great location for a family day out and there’s nothing to beat the thrill of taking a dip outside. It’s open every weekday through the school holidays from 10am – 7.30pm, and closes a little earlier at the weekend. Check the website for term time opening. HEAD BUMPS The summer holidays mean getting your children out and about. However, exploring the great outdoors can hold a few risks. We’ve asked First Aid specialist Helen Underwood for advice about head bumps. When should we head to A & E and when will a cuddle do?

HEAD BUMPS

10 THINGS EVERY PARENT

n Don’t Panic. If you stay calm after the injury, your child will calm down more quickly. Then you can see how big the problem is. Give them a cuddle, check for cuts and bruises. If there is a cut, make sure the wound is clean and apply direct pressure. Any bleeding should stop within 10 minutes. If it doesn’t, the cut may need stitches.

n Look out for an egg. Very often a bump to the head results in a visible raised bruise. That’s very common and is nothing to be worried about. Stay calm, reassure your child and put a cold flannel over the bump. n Know your child. You know how they react to things and what their natural behaviour is. If they aren’t acting like themselves after the injury – perhaps their co-ordination is affected or they simply won’t stop crying – it’s important to consult a professional. If you’re not sure, there’s nothing wrong with getting the injury checked out, either at your local GPs surgery or at Children’s A & E. n Has your child been sick? Vomiting once after an injury is common, but if your child is sick again then you must take them to Children’s A & E. There, they’ll check your child’s vital signs and repeat those tests until they’re satisfied there’s no serious injury. n Is your child red faced and hot after they’ve stopped crying? This can mean increased blood to the head. Do you notice noisy laboured breathing? This can mean increased pressure inside the skull. Either of these signs mean a trip to the hospital. Remember, if in doubt, check it out.

n Is your child developing black eyes? This ‘panda eye’ effect means the pressure within their skull is trying to find a way out. This is another sign your child needs medical attention. ! ! ! ! ! ! !! ! !

n Can you see fluid leaking from their ears or their nose? It may be blood or a clear liquid. Do not attempt to stop this leakage. Simply put a clean cloth loosely over the affected area and head for Children’s A & E.

n Has your child fallen asleep? No matter what your age, if you have a headache, you want to go to sleep. After the injury your child may fall asleep in your arms. That’s not a problem provided all their vital signs are normal. If you aren’t able to wake them from that sleep then that’s a cause for concern. n If your child loses consciousness, you need to head for Children’s A & E. Remember your basic first aid while they’re unconscious. Shout for help and for someone to call an ambulance, open their airways, check for breathing and then roll your child onto their side.

n REMEMBER. Life isn’t risk free and most of the time injuries to children are minor. This summer we want our children to learn by exploring their environment and engaging in imaginative play. The outdoors is a great playground and we don’t want to stop our kids having fun! Children’s A & E is now based at Leeds General Infirmary off Calverley Street. There is NO Children’s A & E at St James’ Hospital. How to have a happy holiday during

difficult family times… |The summer holidays are almost here. For many that will| |mean sun, sea and lots of fun. Spare a thought however for| |families experiencing the uncertainty of separation. Andrew| |Smith, family mediator and family law expert from Emsleys| |Solicitors provides his tips and guidance to those families for| |whom the summer holidays mean stress.|

If

a family has separated, usually the time each parent spends with their children will be arranged around the child’s schooling and the parents’ work commitments. No school for several weeks gives both parents more opportunity to spend longer periods of quality time with their children. The independent observer might think, “Great, at least two holidays for the children, happy times with both parents, everyone’s a winner!” Sadly this is not always the case and the school holidays can become flashpoints for conflict, anxiety, mistrust and acrimony between parents. That inevitably filters down to the children. It is a good idea to start to think proactively and make early arrangements for how the children will be looked after. Some of the advice may sound obvious, but sometimes the simplest advice is the best. In the case of separating families with fractured emotions, common sense and practicality are not always easy to achieve.

Our 4 point plan for a less stressful summer: 1. Exchange diaries for the whole of the holiday period in advance. This could include confirmed plans for dates away, or those which are proposed to take place. This will then allow you to work with each other and make sure the children can spend quality time with both of you. 2. Provide details of planned holidays away well in advance of the trip. This should include the address of the accommodation, flight details (if abroad) and emergency phone numbers. If both parents have all of the details available to them, this will increase the trust element and relieve any anxiety. 3. Keep in contact with the other parent. It would be a good idea to agree in advance when and how often contact will be made by telephone, email or Skype. This means neither parent feels forgotten (or bombarded!) by each other or the children. Children will often want to tell their mum or dad of the activities they have been doing that day.

4. Compromise with dates. Families often have a structure to the time in which each parent cares for the children and the extended holidays are bound to affect that structure. Try and agree alternative periods so that the children can still spend time with both parents, especially when they have spent a long time away. The key is pre-planning and not to forget to communicate as much as possible with the other parent. If communication is not so easy then there are avenues available to you such as Family Mediation, which will assist you in reaching amicable agreements with an independent, impartial mediator. Finally, don’t be afraid to seek advice from a solicitor. A good family solicitor will be able to identify your main concerns, provide sound advice and explore your options, with you and your children’s best interests at heart.

HILARY ROBINSON (RIGHT) WITH ILLUSTRATOR MANDY STANLEY

Three years ago Families Leeds Editor Sarah Butters had to tell her then 5 year old daughter about the death of a young relative. She searched for a book to help her. Three years on, she’s found that book and has been along to chat to its Yorkshire author, Hilary Robinson.

The Story behind

‘THE COPPER TREE’

D

EATH. It’s a topic no one wants to think about but almost all families will have to deal with at some point. For most, it’s the passing of an elderly relative, but for some it’s the loss of someone much younger. It’s not a topic traditionally tackled in children’s fiction, until now. The Copper Tree is the story of a class of children who learn how to cope with the death of their teacher, Miss Evans. We witness the youngsters finding out she’s unwell, her final visit to the school and how they deal with the news of her death. “The aim of the book is to celebrate the life lost and find a way to continue the memory,” explains Hilary. “Experts call this Continuing Bonds Theory. The children in Miss Evans’ class are encouraged to remember the character and qualities she imparted and to pass them on. It means the person who has died, lives on in a sense.” The children in the class all have their own personalities and their own memories of Miss Evans. One child remembers how her teacher had taught her to share, another remembers she’d taught him about how plants grow. Each child chooses words that are then inscribed on copper leaves which will hang on a Copper Tree made by the school caretaker. “The idea for the tree came from the Tree of Life at St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds,” says Hilary. “It’s a beautiful copper tree and bereaved relatives can hang a leaf inscribed with the name of the loved one they lost. I’ve always thought that it’s a really wonderful idea.”

The book was inspired by Hilary’s own loss. Seven years ago her sister in law Caroline lost her battle with breast cancer. Caroline had been head teacher at Cross Hall Infant School in Morley. As Hilary reads through The Copper Tree explaining various pictures and references, it’s clear this book is a very personal tribute to a very brave lady. There’s a part where the children receive a letter from Miss Evans “in shaky writing” which is a reference to one of Hilary’s own memories of Caroline. “I remember my daughters getting an Easter card written by Caroline. She’d been determined to make the card herself but her fine motor skills had started to go and so the writing was shaky.” However sad the theme, this isn’t a sad book. It is a story about loss, but it’s also a story about the gifts we give each day to each other. It’s written from the point of view of Olivia, one of the children, so there are places where the narrator’s mind wanders – to observe a three legged dog winning a race at Sports Day, or a classmate’s obsession with bats.

The beautiful illustrations and simple story disguise a book that’s been well researched and given the support of experts in the field of child bereavement. Hilary was keen to make sure she handled the delicate subject matter with sensitivity and responsibility and as a result, she’s won the support of leading charities and hospices around the country. “There were three main considerations,” explains the author. “Firstly the importance of using real people, not animals. Secondly, you’ve got to avoid euphemisms. If you tell a 5 year old they’ve ‘lost’ someone, they’ll think you’ll eventually find them. Finally there should be no whimsical notions of heaven. What do we really know? It’s up to parents and teachers to explain as they feel fit.” Hilary would like The Copper Tree to be used as a resource in schools and shared in classrooms across the country as a way of encouraging children to communicate. The message the book gives is that a life lived is to be celebrated and those touched by that life should pass on what they’ve learnt. To Hilary and her family, the publication of The Copper Tree is a celebration of the short but full life her sister in law Caroline lived. Her spirit, courage and memory will now live on in the pages of this amazing book and in the hearts of those who read it. The Copper Tree is £6.99 and available to order from www.amazon.co.uk or through the official website www.thecoppertree.org

Supporting Your Child

THROUGH GRIEF

IIt’s a sad fact, but at some point in their young life, your childI Iwill lose a loved one. How do you help them process their griefI Iand when do children need professional support? We talk toI IDan Bordoley, Children and Young People’s Worker in Leeds.I IWe met up with him at St Gemma’s Hospice in Moortown.I

T

HE branches of the Tree of Life at St Gemma’s Hospice are filled with delicate copper leaves inscribed with the names of those who have died here. Each of these leaves represents a life lost, a family bereaved. Dan Bordoley has supported hundreds of children from those families through their grief. The smiling faces looking out of the latest newsletter from his department reveal that he’s doing vital work. Dan supports children dealing with the very worst sort of loss – often a parent – and says there’s as many different ways of grieving as there are children. “Everyone grieves in their own way, at their own pace,” explains Dan. “Most model their parents, especially younger children. Very young children tend not to understand and so don’t accept the person has gone. They think they’re coming back. Death doesn’t mean the same to a young child as it does to you and me. That changes when they get to about 6 years old. Then they begin to understand the person who has died, isn’t coming back. They will have feelings but at that age, can struggle with verbalizing them.” Honesty and direct, real language are the key to communicating with children. There’s a natural instinct as a parent to want to protect your child from sadness and loss, but most of the children Dan works with say they prefer to know what’s going on. It gives them the chance to ask questions, and gives parents the chance to explain things. Open and honest language is also vital. “Be clear with the words you use. Don’t be afraid to say ‘death’ and ‘dying’ otherwise the child will be confused,” Dan explains. “If you say you’ve ‘lost’ someone, a child thinks they can be found. If you say someone has ‘fallen asleep’ a child thinks they can be woken, or they can be scared to go to sleep themselves.” Dan’s work combines individual and family counseling with group workshops. Those workshops use art, drama, dance and sport to either focus the children’s mind on working through their grief, or providing a positive distraction with young people going through the same experiences. At the moment Dan’s planning a sailing trip in Newcastle and some self defence classes. However one of the most poignant exercises is ‘A Day to Remember’.

“It’s a very direct look at a child’s grief, but done in a fun way,” says Dan. “It’s a day of arts and crafts focused around the person who has died. It allows the children to process the memories, and not just the good ones. It’s about remembering the whole person.” Art is a big part of the therapy here at St Gemma’s and Dan uses drawing with the children. When the words run out, drawing a picture can be a way of communicating feelings. The walls of the art room are covered with work from both those being treated here and the children they leave behind. “A useful exercise to do with a child is to divide a piece of paper into three sections,” explains Dan. “This is before, during and the future. Get the child to draw a picture in each area. It helps to start a conversation, acknowledge what’s happened but importantly to see there’s a future. This can take some children 10 minutes and others much longer.” Dan will see about 100 children this year aged between 5 and 16 years old. He describes his job as a privilege. The children he’s supported over his 5 years here have taught him a positive and important lesson about the human spirit that can give every grieving family hope in their darkest hour. “Most children are OK. Yes, they will be changed. Yes, the experience will stay with them for life. But they’ll be OK.” Dan Bordoley is based at St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds. 0113 218 5500 youngpeople@stgemma.co.uk

WHAT DO I SAY TO MY CHILD? • Tell them the truth. Excluding them can make them feel left out and resentful. By talking to them YOU control the information and keep communication channels open. • Use clear, real language. • Let your child know it’s OK to ask questions. They will have worries and concerns and verbalizing them can help keep them in perspective. Younger children will ask the same question over again. Be patient. • Don’t hide your emotions from your child. By showing you are upset, you are giving them permission to show they are upset. • Keep your boundaries in place. Children become confused when the boundaries they’ve lived with disappear. If they’re badly behaved, tell them. If they’ve got a routine, stick to it. You’re giving them a stability at a time when life feels very unstable. • Look out for changes in behaviour – anger, anxiety, worry, fear of being abandoned. Their fears may be irrational but listen and respond in a straightforward and truthful manner. • Consult the professionals. If you feel your child isn’t communicating or coping then ask for support.
