It always makes sense to put your child at the centre of the process when choosing a school. Parents know better than anyone how different individual children can be and individual schools can be very different too.

Top Homework Tips Where, When and How
Let THEM Do the Work
Create space. If possible, this should be a communal space but one with minimal distractions. This enables parental supervision/input without it feeling like an intrusion.
Provide guidance, not answers. Use questioning to help them get as close to the answer as they can but don’t tell them.
Establish a routine. Some children prefer to do homework straight after school; others need to ‘unwind’ or eat first. Whatever is decided, stick to it. Get organised. Have your child do the hard work first when they are most alert. Help them make a “Done/To Do” list.
Let them make mistakes. Giving answers means they will not learn the material and their teacher will not know how much they understand it. Step in only when progress comes to a halt. Encourage them to set small positive targets promoting independent working and selfsufficiency.
What YOU Can Offer Discuss homework. Even if you know nothing about a subject, you can still help just by talking, listening and helping them to find the right answer. Use a timer. Challenge your child to estimate how long an assignment might take. Suggest setting a timer for that amount of time, or less. Encourage. Praise effort not achievement. Focus on hard work or improved concentration, handwriting or presentation. Make it positive. Tell them how important school is. Your attitude to homework will influence their attitude. 8 September 2020

FAMILY HEALTH
Thornton & Ross provides a helping hand A Huddersfield-based company has launched a new extensive handwashing guide to support those suffering from eczema or sensitive skin. With more frequent hand washing and use of hand sanitisers during the pandemic, more people are experiencing symptoms of dry and sensitive skin conditions, such as eczema. To help alleviate these symptoms, Thornton & Ross, part of the STADA Group, have produced a new extensive handwashing guide, which it will be making available to all schools, leisure centres, libraries, and public places in the Kirklees district. Emollient creams help the skin to retain moisture in the outer layers and replace lost oils, whilst protecting damaged or inflamed skin. Visit thorntonross.com/protectinghands for more information on emollients available.

Music Bugs All Say Hello!
All set for serious fun at The Little Gym
It will be music to the ears of many grown up and children in Leeds – live MusicBugs classes are returning!
Kate Henebury runs The Little Gym in Leeds says there was a tear her eye as she closed in March. But during lockdown, they quickly adapted. “We set up a YouTube channel for classes to support our members in keeping the kids active and occupied!” said Kate. Everyone was delighted when the doors re-opened within government guidelines and there’s now a full schedule of smaller classes running. Kate added, “We are enjoying welcoming old and new members to The Little Gym for some SERIOUS FUN!” https://leeds.thelittlegym.eu
Music Bugs run fun, interactive and lively music and singing classes for children aged 4 weeks to 4 years. There’s lots of fun with nursery rhymes, counting songs, knee bouncers and action songs. CLUBS NEWS
Smartypants goes alfresco! Smartypants Spanish & French Clubs are going alfresco this term! Inspired by Forest School, lessons have been re-written so that classes can be held outside in the fresh air from September. Pre-school sessions will take place in parks such as Horsforth Hall Park on weekday mornings and after school for primary age children. Schools and nurseries across Leeds and Harrogate can also book sessions on site. “Our main aim this term is for everyone to enjoy learning together as a group again and to really dial up the fun!” said Amy Balding, who runs Smartypants. “For our pre-schoolers, we’ll be doing lots of mark making in the mud, nature trials, playground games and music and movement to bring to life some of their muchloved stories such as The Gruffalo, Dear Zoo, and We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, all read in Spanish or French of course!”
“For our primary age children, language learning will continue to be play based - we’ll be playing lots of traditional Spanish or French playground games as well as playing some of our old favourites too!” Smartypants has been providing popular, high quality language sessions for pre-schools and lunch and after school clubs for five years. “All lesson content is brand new and we’re taking every step we can to deliver it in the safest way possible,” said Amy. There will be no teacher - child contact and every game, story, craft and activity has been considered so that it provides a safe, effective and most of all, fun learning experience! If you haven’t tried it before, the first session is free!” To find out more, or to book a session email smartypantslanguages@gmail.com or call 07919021951.

SCHOOL NEWS
Gateways Opens its Doors Gateways School in Harewood, Leeds, is opening its doors – in more ways than one. It will hold an open day on Friday 2 October for prospective pupils – and now this includes boys in High School years. Gateways is a small nonselective independent school for children aged 2-18 years, offering education from Early Years right through to Sixth Form. The nursery, pre-reception and primary (prep) school accepts boys and girls from age 2 through to Year 6. Gateways High School was traditionally a girls only environment, however in September 2019, the High School welcomed boys into Year 7. Over the next few years, it will become progressively coeducational. This means in September 2021 boys will be able to join Year 7, Year 8 and Year 9. Gateways is a small school as a matter of choice; every child is known individually, is valued for their strengths and is supported to overcome their weaknesses. As well as having excellent GCSE and A Level results, Gateways is regularly placed in the top ten schools nationally for Value Added. Register today for the Open Day. Call Admissions on 0113 288 6345.
Richmond House Welcomes New Headteacher Richmond House School is delighted to welcome Chris Bouckley as the new Headteacher. Mr Bouckley, who joins from Fulneck School, where he was Vice Principal, said “I am delighted to be appointed as the Headteacher of Richmond House School. I first visited the school over 15 years ago for a sports fixture and was struck by the warm and friendly atmosphere. I am excited to be joining the Richmond House family, and I look forward to taking the school from strength to strength.” Richmond House is an excellent-rated independent preparatory school for children aged three to 11 Far Headingley, North Leeds. It has small class sizes, of a maximum of 18, with a two-form entry. Children are accepted into the Nursery School from the term in which they turn three. Childcare Post Lockdown
Do you dread mealtimes? Does your child have little interest in broccoli and beans? Whether you’re trying baby-led weaning or desperate to get vegetables into a pre-schooler, here’s our tips on how to give your child the best start at the dinner table.
As childcare opens up postlockdown, there is a sense of unease about whether it’s safe to send our children back to nursery. Of course, we want to protect them. So how are nurseries making their environment safe for our children? READ MORE

More Healthy Eating Tips Dr Pandora Giles (University of East London) outlines her ideas. • Make meal times fun. Chat, sing, talk about the food. • Encourage food play. Make faces out of fruit or a forest with broccoli! • Offer new foods alongside a favourite. • Swap excessive milk/juice between meals for water if your child is eating little. • Have clear mealtimes of around 20 minutes. • Eat with your child. Offer encouragement. • It’s never too late. Tastes change, so you can introduce variety at any point. familiesonline.co.uk

PARENTING
Online Safety Tips for Parents The internet and all it can offer, is a wonderful tool for keeping in touch with friends and family, education and fun. However, navigating issues of online safety can be daunting for parents, who are often less technology savvy than their children! The Leeds Safeguarding Children Partnership (LSCP) wants parents and carers to be aware that it is possible for people who are unknown to children and young people to communicate with them via the internet, even via games consoles such as Xbox and PlayStation. The LSCP has a fantastic website, with lots of tips and information all in one place about keeping youngsters safe online. Visit www.leedsscp.org.uk/onlinesafety for information on the most popular apps that your child is using, what to be aware of when buying games and general tips on online safety.
