WHAT’S ON? Our guide to events and activities in July and August

Welcome back...

10 12

The school year is nearly over. What would my end of year report say if I still got one? Well, if managing to meet deadlines by the skin of my teeth means efficiency, traipsing three flights of stairs with armfuls of washing five times a day counts as exercise, vegetable samosas represent my five-a-day and making sure the kids get to school means good parenting: top marks! I mean, everything’s relative, right? At 17 months old, my youngest doesn’t pass a screen without pointing at it and saying ‘Dog’ – in reference to her CBeebies favourite, Waffle the Wonder Dog. Sometimes I vow never to let her near a screen again. Then when we have a crisis (they happen at least 12 times a day) and need to distract her, we all flail around wildly for the remote-control shouting: “Do you want Dog on? Do you want Dog on????” To be fair, she’s a pretty resourceful and independent learner despite this dreadful habit. The other day, I realised she had never been given a shape sorter of any kind, and had fashioned her own by feeding random objects through the fire guard. We seem to live our lives in a permanent state of emergency. There’s a forgotten No School Uniform Day lurking around every corner. But hey – we do our best, that’s all we can do. So, I am hereby giving ten out of ten to every parent and carer out there who each day wakes up and puts one foot in front of the other on the magical journey of family life. We’ve worked hard all year, and we deserve a holiday. Of course we won’t get one, but we do deserve one! Wherever you’re going, whatever you’re doing (or more importantly, I hope, not doing) I wish everyone a happy and restful summer break.  More nursery provision at Brontë House Brontë House School has launched a flexible new childcare offer which recognises changing needs at different times of the year. From September, Ashdown Lodge, which is home to Brontë’s nursery, will offer three options: n Term Time – perfect for parents who don’t need additional childcare during school holidays. n Term Time Plus 8 – based on the normal school term time calendar plus an additional 8 weeks during school holidays. In addition, Ashdown Lodge now welcomes children from the age of two. Sarah Chatterton, incoming Head of Brontë House, said,“We are very excited about these new developments at Ashdown Lodge. SUMMER READING Header

Blast off for the Summer reading Challenge! Christinea Donnelly, Development Officer for Children and Young People at Bradford Libraries, tells us all about this year’s cosmic summer reading challenge… The Summer Reading Challenge is a national initiative to encourage primary age children to continue to read throughout the summer holidays. Each year it has a different theme and this year the Space Chase Summer Reading Challenge commemorates the 50th anniversary of the first landing on the Moon. Children between ages four and 11 can register to join the Summer Reading Challenge for free at their local library. The challenge is to read six library books over the summer holidays, collecting incentives along the way. When you register, you receive a Space Chase folder with stickers. If six books are read, you receive a Space Chase certificate and medal. Often, when children are asked what is the best bit of the Summer Reading Challenge, they say getting a certificate to show their friends and family and, of course – to take along to school to show their teachers in September. The challenge starts on July 13 and runs until the beginning of September. It’s free; it’s fun and it’s local. To find out more visit the web pages of your local library. There are five library authorities in West Yorkshire – Bradford; Calderdale; Kirklees; Leeds and Wakefield. All of them will be offering events to support the Summer Reading Challenge and with Space as the theme, you can expect some out-ofthis-world free activities. Make your local library a great day out this summer. www.spacechase.org.uk

CLASS rEviEW: Diddi Dance

WHERE: Adel, Guiseley, Pool-in-Wharfedale, Horsforth, Rawdon, Roundhay

You’re never too diddi to dance – that’s what we learned when we joined this fun and funky pre-school class. HILE MY LITTLE GROOVER was on the young side at just 16 months, I was amazed at how much she engaged and enjoyed this fun-packed 45 minutes. She’s finding her feet, and fast. Having learnt to walk, her development is all about physical exploration – which is why Diddi Dance is so perfect for toddlers. We’re welcomed to St Margaret’s Parish Hall in Horsforth – which is a lovely, light space – by teacher Julia Grantham. There’s a relaxed vibe with music playing in the background. We begin with some boogying, playing stopping and starting games. Dancing together makes her feel secure in the new environment. It is also fun and makes me smile – who doesn’t love a bop every now and again?

W

With Diddi Dance, though, capturing their attention with music is just the start – a series of thoughtful activities lead the tots through a fun programme which visits counting, languages, colours and more. We do some action songs, games and exercises working together, holding hands in a circle and in pairs – my baby looks so grown up! By half-way through, she is fully confident, joining in the dancing with hoops and ribbons, and I am able to sit and chat to another parent while I watch her and the other boys and girls dance away to original Diddi Dance music. Each term has a new dance theme, and this time it is Salsa. Others include Hula, Jive and Disco. As I watch, I reflect that Diddi Dance feels so relaxed and enjoyable because it embraces toddlers’ physicality. It feels liberating that the whole point is to get up, move and explore the world. At the end, many of them run up with their special Diddi Dance sticker chart. “I started my Diddi Dance journey as a mum bringing my own two boys along to classes,” explained Julia, who has a lifelong passion for music. “To me, it is brilliant because it is relaxed, fun, and teaches little ones so much!” She added,“I love what I do; watching the children grow in confidence and seeing how much they change when they come week after week is amazing!”

WHEN: Various, Monday to Friday AGES: For pre-schoolers aged from around 18 months

FuN ON ThE CArDS: Five great games to take on holiday!

“I never go on holiday without games: it’s a great way to distract the children, keep them engaged and spend some fun time with them.” So says Ann Jones, who runs Cards or Die, a company with a passion for bringing people together with card and board games, which holds regular family and adult events around Leeds. “The great thing about good, well designed kid’s games is they are suitable for kids of all ages,” she adds. “Another great thing about good games is that they are funnier with wine.” Here, Ann shares her pick of favourite games to take on holiday: DOBBLE A trickier version of snap: each card has eight images on it, the first to shout out the image which appears both on the top card of the deck and their card wins the card – most cards wins. It’s a fun, fast paced game which comes in a portable tin.

PASS THE PIGS This 80s classic is still going strong. Surprisingly addictive and entertaining, you ‘roll’ the pigs and score according to how they land, choosing to bank your score or keep rolling. But be careful – roll them ‘wrongly’ and you’ll lose your points! For extra chaos there are inflatable pigs, giant pigs and four player pigs. QUIRK! A crazy game of card collection! Request cards from others by acting out or becoming a unicorn, T-rex, alien or other quirky character. Steal cards from others or distract them with bubble wrap so they miss a turn. Loads of laugh out loud fun. DON’T GET GOT Played over days it’s a brilliant holiday game. Race to complete three missions to win. These involve tricking other players into doing daft things like yawning, handing over their

phone, or checking to see if they’ve stepped in poo! Rated 14+ but we’ve played it with younger ones and you can easily give the difficult cards to the grown-ups. HAPPY SALMON Each player holds a deck of identical cards. Match with another player, complete the action and discard the cards. First to run out of cards wins. A frenetic game of high fives, switcheroos and happy salmons. “All of these can be easily packed ready to whip out, dispel boredom and get you together laughing and having fun whatever the weather,” said Ann. If you fancy trying any of these games out join Cards or Die for a board games event. Ann also brings board gaming fun to weddings, parties, festivals, corporate events and training. She writes a fortnightly blog on www.cardsordie.com.

Book Club Rob Biddulph is a bestselling author-illustrator, whose books have won many awards and are loved by children all over the world. He is also this year’s official World Book Day Illustrator. Rachel Bailey talks to him… If you had to dress up as a character from one of your books, who would you choose? Probably the Odd Dog Out. Lots of children dressed up as her this year for World Book Day, and there was one costume in particular that blew my mind. It was so good! Upon further investigation we found out that the mother of the child who was wearing it was a costume designer for film and TV. We’re particular fans of Dinosaur Juniors in our house, do you have a favourite book that you’ve written? Well, I’ll always be very fond of Blown Away – the story that gave me my big break, but my favourite is probably Odd Dog Out. The reaction I get from children (and adults) is astonishing. It really seems to strike a chord with people, which is lovely. I also like

Kevin, because it’s based on my middle daughter’s “real” imaginary friend. I’m glad that I’ve managed to capture that little piece of her childhood in a book. We’re looking forward to reading your new book, Show and Tell, next month. Have your children ever taken you into school for ‘Show and Tell’? Ha. No, I’d be far too embarrassing! I have visited their school quite a few times to read my stories and do some drawing, however. I usually try out my live show there before I take it on the road. If I can survive my own daughters’ criticisms I can survive anything! What’s your favourite way to spend time with your family? We’ve just got a puppy. He’s a ten week-old cocker spaniel called Ringo. He’s so great! I’m really looking forward to when we can all take him out for walks (he’s still got to have a couple of his jabs before we can do that). I think that will be great way of spending some quality time together. Apart from that, I still read bedtime stories to the girls. It’s a truly magical thing to do. That one-on-one time is so precious. I hope it never stops!

WIN • WIN • WIN… Show and Tell will be available in hardback from August 8 priced £12.99. We have two copies to give away to the first two people to email their details to editor@familiesleeds.co.uk Visit Rob’s website: www.robbiddulph.com to find out more about his books.
