Inventor bags gold award Congratulations to local mother-of-two Lara Milanova - who has just won the Gold Award for Best New Innovation at the Mother & Baby Awards 2010 for the Hamster Buggy Bags she has invented. The Hamster buggy bags are a pair of bags that attach to the sides of buggies. They help keep lightweight buggies stable and provide additional storage space for baby and toddler essentials and shopping. Lara made the first prototype using pieces of cloth, string and staples. She then worked with a professional designer to bring the idea to reality, on the way taking a crash course in fabrics and plastic components, dealing with designers and manufacturers, website design, marketing and PR, “with the help of some very talented local mum-friends!” READER OFFER: Hamster buggy bags are £29 a pair from www.hamsterbags.co.uk. Lara is offering Families readers a £5 discount using the online code ‘families’.

Stagecoach students have a ‘wicked’ time Students at Stagecoach Beckenham had a treat last month when the star of hit West End musical Wicked visited to present a ‘Wicked Workshop’. Ashleigh Gray, who plays the green witch Elphaba in the musical, taught youngsters routines from the show and said: “I was very impressed with the standard and enthusiasm of the students. They took to the routines very easily and were really enjoyable to work with.” After the workshop there was time for a question and answer session with the star. Jill Schaverien, principal of the school, commented: “The children had a fantastic time, and came away inspired.” Stagecoach Beckenham runs classes on Saturdays at Kelsey Park Sports College. To ask about places for the January term, call Jill on 020 8979 2156 or visit www.stagecoach.co.uk/beckenham.

The write stuff Inkhead are running a new five week creative writing course for 8-14 year-olds in the new year. The course will cover fiction writing, teaching young writers how to plot stories, explore characters and their motivation, describe scenes, and find their own voice. Developing an awareness and appreciation of the written word helps children develop confidence and the skills of self-expression - and the classes The classes will be held in Herne Hill from 8 January. For more information, call Louise on 01749 938 137 or see www.inkhead.co.uk.

Little fingers Little Fingers are new classes for babies in their first year, stimulating little minds and exercising little bodies through multi-sensory play. Founder Clair Madeley told us: “As a mum myself I know how important early learning is for babies. When I had my own little one, I wanted to give my baby the best start in life and enjoy those precious moments, but there was a lack of classes specifically for younger babies. This inspired me to set up Little Fingers.” Each class is a welcoming and relaxed environment for babies from birth to 12 months, and with a different theme each week, activities include baby signing, music, singing and movement. Props include musical instruments, bubbles, puppet shows, parachutes and more. All classes follow the Early Years Foundation Stage guidelines and all tutors are fully insured and enhanced CRB checked. The venues are currently Beckenham and Bromley, with more to follow. For more information or a free trial session, call Clair on 07738 247 259 or go to www.litttlefingers.co.uk.

New French classes Inky Pinky Parlez-Vous is a new French song, dance and language class for preschoolers. Ex City solicitor Caroline Mills set up the classes after introducing her own daughter to French when she was just a couple of months old, drawing on her own experience of teaching the language to nursery children, and as a primary school teacher in Paris. Over time, each session develops listening and communication skills, following Early Years Foundation guidance. There are three age groups: 0-12 months, 1-3 years and 3-5 years. Parents can book a half priced trial class before signing up for regular classes. See our What’s On pages for a special Christmas party on 21 December. For more information, call Caroline on 07776 234 108 or go to www.inkypinkyparlez-vous.com.

Pointers pupils’ huge donation Children from The Pointer School in Blackheath collected an amazing 393 books for Matopo Primary School in Zimbabwe, to start a library to help the African children improve their reading and writing skills. The books, which did not have to be new, but had to be in good condition, were carefully selected and beautifully wrapped by Pointers pupils, along with a donation from the school of 98 text books and a reading scheme box, which will soon be transported to Zimbabwe. Pointers’ headmaster Mr Rob Higgins said: “As a Christian school, we are always keen to support charities and, when a Pointers parent got in touch with us about Matopo Primary School, we knew we could make a real difference. We are very fortunate at Pointers to have an abundant supply of resources, small class sizes and a productive working environment, whereas Matopo Primary School has none of these basic educational necessities. We are looking forward to getting to know the school better through a pen pal scheme and hope that this is the start of a long term friendship between the schools.” Ndaba Dube, a UK-based former teacher, decided to ‘adopt’ a class of 40 ten-year olds from Matopo Primary School when he saw for himself the challenges they face to get educated. Most children have the writing skills of seven year olds, yet still remain positive and enthusiastic about their education. He said: “I am astounded by Pointers’ generosity; I never expected such a huge donation! I know these resources will be greatly appreciated and will make a world of difference to the children’s learning experience, but more than that, they will get the message that the children of Pointers care about their education.” Pointers School teaches boys and girls aged 3 to 11 and consistently receives outstanding Ofsted reports. For information, call 020 8293 1331 or go to www.pointers-school.co.uk.

Designs on the future Thirty students from St Martin-in-the-Fields High School and St Saviours and St Olave’s School rose to the challenge of designing and building an Underground station at Tube Lines’ head office at the beginning of November. The year 8 and 9 schoolgirls had to consider factors such as security, step free access and the environmental impact of building a station that would be used by thousands of customers a day - all on a fictional budget of £1.5m. They also produced a poster and made a presentation to promote their design, supported throughout the day by Tube Lines’ volunteer STEM ambassadors. There were prizes for the best design, best poster and presentation and best teamwork. Tube Lines is particularity interested in raising awareness of the variety of jobs in engineering to female students to help address the current under-representation of women in the industry.

A giraffe in blackheath A new eating place has arrived in Blackheath to tempt local tastebuds. Giraffe is a successful chain of family-run restaurants which offers long leisurely breakfasts, lunches and dinners from around the world, and tasty take-aways. Little ones are loved just as much as grown ups and have their very own healthy menu complete with puzzles and games to keep them entertained. Owner Russel Joffe said: “Blackheath is a lovely part of the world with lots of character. We are delighted to be able to take over this gem of a restaurant and look forward to bringing Giraffe to locals.” The new branch is open from morning ‘til late, at 58-62 Tranquil Vale, Blackheath SE3 OBN, 020 8463 9155, www.giraffe.net.

At risk of getting it wrong (the game’s too young for them, the jeans are ‘lame’, the CD is ‘swag’), we grabbed a real, live, passing teenager for a wishlist, and here are his recommendations (thanks George - ed): “We can be either very vague or equally strong about what we ‘suggest’ may be the perfect present, and I admit that I’ve not always made it easy for my parents. Here are some pooled ideas from friends who are 14-18 year-olds. Some suggestions didn’t make the list due to either being impossible (a real light sabre) or being a little optimistic (I’ve been asking for a snow leopard for a good six years running), but there were quite a few common trends: • Almost any new Apple phone or iPod, even iPads appear very frequently despite the costs - which we conveniently overlook when it comes to Christmas • For students doing Art, or making the most out of their Facebook page, a decent digital camera can be both useful and a present to be proud of • At the age of 17, most of my friends (myself included - hint hint), have been particularly enthusiastic about learning to drive, although this is not quite as simple (nor cheap) as it first seemed, what with lessons, the car and insurance, not to mention £50 just to get a provisional licence. Yet for teenagers of my age, this is the most talked about ‘ideal’ present • For boys, and a few girls, I found an unsurprisingly recurrent theme of sport! New football or rugby boots or any sports equipment is always a good present (a chance to brag and show off even during matches and games). Tickets to big matches go down well too as they’re a chance to see our idols and as I’ve always found, good male bonding time • A more sketchy area is the idea of receiving clothes. The general consensus was that getting clothes is and can be a brilliant present, however there’s a potential problem if we ask for clothes such as ‘a jacket’. That will generally mean that we’ve already found the particular jacket we’d like. Please don’t feel embarrassed about asking - we’ll happily go online and call up the pre-bookmarked page with the exact clothes we want! • Finally another frequent answer was simply ‘money’. The Bookseller Crow

is a fantastic, volume stuffed shop run by some of the most knowledgeable bookworms in the business. Call in for the feel of a real bookshop, or if you’re too busy, pick up the phone or point your mouse at their website for a fast mailorder service. Justine Crow recommends this month’s best titles. THOUGH I AM a rubbish conformist who doesn’t do religion, I believe no mince pie can be eaten before December 1st in the same way that a hot cross bun toasted before Good Friday is sacrilege. And you must never, ever light a pumpkin before Halloween. Or pour a Campari before June. So, it’s finally safe to use the C word and for the first time in ten years, we are spending Christmas Day with - cue hushed tone - my dad. On the last famous occasion, though he was an absolute darling, another member of my family behaved so appallingly that I swore I would never do a yuletide clan gathering again. Now, thanks to the generosity of friends who have a holiday home nearby, we can do the family knees-up and fallover (and if necessary, fall out) and then poddle back to the privacy of our own idiosyncracies. Hence, I am actually looking forward to being in the bosom of my family this Christmas. No really. This month’s page is picture-book-tastic but remember to use your local bookseller because every time you buy one off the internet, you make an angel cry, a piece of your soul turns black, and a little bit of the high street dies. BIG TOP BENN by David McKee - Tate rrp £8.99. In the running for my favourite picture book of the year, this reissue is thirty years old (same as me, ahem) and still looks glorious (ditto..). The meandering view of Festive Road with its phone booth and racing cyclist, dog walker and mum in flares is heartbreakingly evocative of an England when civic pride was a normal expression, when stations had real flowers (what is the point of the naff placcy ones currently on London platforms? They are no good for man nor bee) and every home had a dressing up box not an Xbox. The aerial shot of the big top itself is so beautiful it should be displayed by the very institution that publishes this tale of transformation, that proves everybody deserves a chance to redeem themselves, even an ex-con like Smasher. THE ADVENTURES OF LOWLY WORM by Richard Scarry - Sterling rrp £9.99. Another iconic series from my childhood still going strong, this optimistic earthworm was my mum’s favourite of all the Busytown inhabitants and she actually welled up whenever the little guy arrived on the page (the only other time her chin wobbled like that was at the credits to When the Boat Comes in with James Bolam). Recently I had a middle-aged customer looking for a recommendation for a small boy and she’d never heard of Richard Scarry. Talk about deprived. My mum would have sat her down like Huckle in a driftwood den and ensured she devoured every scrap of adventure featuring our hero in a green hat and single red Converse sneaker. No education is complete without Lowly. DAY & NIGHT by Teddy Newton - Chronicle rrp £9.99. Disney only became cool again when Pixar entered the fairy-dusted fray, somehow understanding the value in nostalgia without descending into intolerable cheesiness. This comes from the brilliant, engrossing short that showed with Toy Story 3 and it does well as a picture book, losing none of its animated wonder whilst delivering a message about envy and acceptance. The style put me in mind of Astronut. Crikey, someone pass me a Waggon Wheel.. HOW TO RAISE A DINOSAUR by Natasha Wing, illustrated by Pablo Bernasconi Running Press rrp £9.99. We like dinosaurs up here in Crystal Palace, especially rather exquisitely rendered, witty lift-the-flap ones that eat you if you aren’t kind to them. A CHRISTMAS JOURNEY by Brian Wildsmith - Oxford rrp £5.99. Another writer-cumillustrator that seems to have been around forever, Wildsmith’s distinctive artwork is matched by his mischievous invention - note the serious looking archangel rolling a surreptitious snowball while Mary’s dog and cat (do keep up) team up with a bear, fox and goat to follow the star and find the holy stable. Like I said, I don’t usually do God, but this time I’ll make an exception. Other pictures books of note for the season include GLUB! by Penny Little & Sue Mason, Zero to Ten, rrp £6.99 that tracks an unfortunate goldfish down a plughole amidst the customary detritus in a sink-trap - so that’s where all the hairgrips go! In TRIXIE THE WITCH’S

CAT, Puffin rrp £6.99, Nick Butterworth borrows a wee bit from Winnie’s magic moggy but gets away with it with those trademark saucer-sized eyes. MONKEY SEE, MONKEY DRAW by Alex Beard, Abrams rrp £5.99 is a jabbering, galloping story featuring handprint art, complete with pictures of the author in action. Sticky fingermarks all over the option. This cave is a pigsty! A LITTLE BOOK OF ALLITERATIONS by Felix Arthur & Jenny Capon - Inside Pocket rrp £5.99. Morris made Meryl measure Malcolm’s midriff it’s the only way to learn the alphabet, son (and it also usefully features CH and SH and TH - not many ABCs do that). YOU ARE WHAT YOU EAT by Serge Bloch, Sterling rrp £8.99 - is a super stockingfiller (see, I’m paying attention), with photographs and fine doodles that send-up some quality foody clichés. You’ll be pleased as punch with this one. Gyo Fujikawa does a fine alphabet too - C is for City is just stunning with towerblocks and a riverscape as seen from a helicopter in his A TO Z PICTURE BOOK, Sterling, a stupendously good value £6.99 for such a charming hardback. Beneath the old fashioned style lurks a mind that knows how children think. Glad someone can fathom it out and his CAN YOU COUNT? Sterling rrp £4.99, is a board-book that features an otter and a flamingo, what’s not to like? 10 LITTLE PENGUINS by Fromental & Jolivet, Abrams rrp £9.99, is an ingenious counting book with cunning paper engineering that knocks off the penguins one by wicked one. Aw. But, surprise! They are all alive really. Best pop-up of 2010. Followed closely by BEAUTY & THE BEAST, Simon & Schuster, rrp £19.99, by the king of the genre, Robert Sabuda. More paper wizardry for a perennial rave in ANGELINA BALLERINA’S SLEEPOVER PARTY, Katharine Holabird and Helen Craig, Puffin rrp £12.99, with pop-up play house, press-out characters and a new story reminding me with a shudder of my Christmas ballet performance in a hall not far from here. I am so happy that YouTube ensures making a twerp of oneself is for life, and not just for Christmas. FIREBIRD by Saviour Pirotta, paintings by Catherine Hyde, Templar rrp £12.99. To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky’s ballet, thus inserting dignity right back into the art form after me and my crew have royally trashed it, this elegant re-telling contains graceful and poignant illustrations befitting of the tale, the final image of the eponymous creature bursting onto the page in scorching hues - my fingers are still smouldering (unlike my ballet shoes). WALLACE & GROMIT, CRACKING CONTRAPTIONS MANUAL - Haynes rrp £12.99. It is amazing how much you can get out of a bit ‘o plasticine and a Northern accent. Now if somebody could rustle me up a Bed Launcher, these cold winter mornings would be a whole lot more fun. Especially if I don’t warn the teenager first. HUNEFER & HIS BOOK OF THE DEAD by Richard Parkinson, British Museum Press, rrp £4.99 is the perfect primer to the superb expo that does its best to unpick the mysteries of this ancient Eygptian’s magic spells, and STAR TREK: The Original Series by Paula M. Block, with Terry J. Erdmann, Abrams rrp £19.99 boldly goes into the mind of Gene Rodenberry, unpicking it episode by orginal episode. Tribbles always reminded me of kids - cute but unnecessary. For your own tribble sci-fi buff, there’s also a STAR WARS scanimation title, Workman, rrp £10.99. Just like being at the cinema. Without the popcorn-drink combo at seven quid a, well, pop. That’s the page wrapped. Time to think about packing. How five of us, plus umpteen warm coats and wellies (the downside is my dad lives 150 yards from the North Sea), decorations, a consignment of holiday grub plus a raft of presents are all going to fit into the Wilderness Explorer (aka a Citroen Picasso) is beyond me. It will be like a giant game of Buckeroo - carefully balance the crackers on the top and, ping! I’ll have to start all over again.. Happy Holidays!

Mothers Mean Business the story behind

The Little Picture Company LOCAL BUSINESS woman Anita Singh is a busy first-time mother who lives in southeast London. Earlier this year she started up her first business and now represents five talented artists who produce inspirational, limited edition artworks for children. We asked her how The Little Picture Company came about, and how it’s going.

FSE: What was your job before you set up your own business? Anita: “I worked as a campaigns manager for an animal protection organisation for several years. My job involved lots of traveling and unsociable hours. I had to be on-call for media interviews 24/7 - I remember hosting a press conference in the Houses of Commons with Ann Widdecombe when I was over eight months pregnant! Unfortunately, a few months after my daughter was born, I was made redundant.”

FSE: What inspired you? Anita: “My little girl, Naia is the inspiration behind The Little Picture Company.I wanted her to be surrounded by beautiful and colourful images that would help to develop her sense of creativity and also make her nursery a playful, colourful and fun space. I looked high and low but as I started to decorate her nursery, I was shocked by how difficult it was to find one of a kind images and artwork that weren’t the regular ‘teddy’ print that the high street had to offer. I wanted to find something timeless that could become a focal point for our bedtime stories together. When I was given a beautiful art piece for Naia’s room from a friend, I realised I had found what I was looking for and I created The Little Picture Company to help bring it to other parents like myself.”

FSE: How does it work? Anita: “The Little Picture Company is an online art shop that displays and offers a magical world of images for children to help nurture and inspire their imagination. Coming from a background in animal protection, I believe strongly in respecting animals and the environment they inhabit. All of the papers and inks used are free from any animal derivatives, and recycled and biodegradable packaging is used wherever possible. Our limited edition giclee prints are made using archival vegetable-based inks and printed on a range of environmentally friendly papers, including sustainable bamboo. Many of our

images tell a story, including wonderful enchanted forests, beautiful rocking horses, magical landscapes and starry night skies!” We are lucky to have five talented artists who put together collections exclusively for the gallery. As we are primarily online, people can easily select the artwork they like, buy it and have it delivered directly to their door. We also have a few lovely local shops who have started to stock our prints including Jane Newberry in Dulwich Village and Smash Bang Wallop in Crystal Palace.”

FSE: How difficult was it to start up? Anita: “Being made redundant while still at home nursing Naia was devastating. But once I had the idea for the business I felt empowered to make it happen, no matter what. It took almost a year to set up the gallery. First, I had to do research to make sure there really was a gap in the market. Then I had to find talented artists who shared my enthusiasm for being part of an ethical business. The artists then put together their collections, I sourced fine art printers and framers focusing very much on supporting other small businesses in the area. Setting up the website was a whole new story; but once it all started coming together, it was such a satisfying experience.”

household as efficiently as possible. Although I wouldn’t call it a drawback, I will admit that sometimes I think back to when working for someone meant less stress and fewer grey hairs!”

FSE: Does the work/ family balance work for you? Anita: “Although sometimes frustrating, in general it works well for us. My family has been so supportive from the very beginning everyone pitches in to help, and I don’t know what I would do without my mother in law! She is wonderful and helps me one day a week watching Naia so that I can work.”

FSE: Do you have any advice for other mothers thinking of running their own business? Anita: “I think it’s important to believe in yourself and your idea. Do your research to make sure that it is a worthwhile venture, and after that, trust your instincts.” Two valuable resources I found along my way were the British Library Business and IP Centre (www.bl.uk/bipc/), and Business Link (www.businesslink.gov.uk/) for support, advice and guidance from registering a company name to writing your business plan.”

FSE: What are the benefits?

FSE: Where do customers find you?

Anita: “The biggest benefit is that I can spend so much time with my Naia.I can manage my own time so that meetings are conducted when she attends nursery and emails can be answered in the evening when she is asleep. Naia is also my biggest critic and gets to ‘review’ new pieces as they come in to see if they get her seal of approval!”

Anita: “Its always lovely to speak to people who are curious about our work, and I can be reached at anita@thelittlepicturecompany.org. And of course, as an online company, all of our artwork can be viewed and ordered through our website www.thelittlepicturecompany.org.

FSE: Are there any drawbacks?

Best Feet Forward - everything you ever needed to know about little shoes by Julie Lowe from Biff Childrenswear

NEW RESEARCH from Glasgow Caledonian University has shown that four million children are wearing the wrong sized shoes, which can harm growing feet.

Around puberty, feet can grow very rapidly - we have seen as much as two to three sizes in one term! If your child has grown in height expect a spurt in foot size. If they have not grown for some time a spurt may be due. This advice applies to the ‘average’ foot - a child whose adult foot size is going to be large will grow out of more shoes than one whose adult foot size will be small.

A good shoe shop will fit the right footwear for your child, and give expert advice. Biff in Dulwich Village has trained shoe fitters and stocks a wide range of children’s shoes. Owner Julie Lowe answers some of the most commonly asked questions in her shop.

Why can’t you fit extra room to allow for growth spurts?

When does my child need her first pair of shoes? Your baby can be fitted with specialist pre walkers/ first shoes when they start taking their first steps. Shoes are not essential at this stage - walking barefoot indoors allows feet to strengthen and develop. The benefit of shoes at this early stage is protection. As their walking progresses, particularly once they are ready to walk outdoors, shoes become essential for protection and will start to give some stability. First shoes/ pre walkers must be soft and flexible, with adjustable fastenings for a snug fit.

Why is my child measured a different size in different shops? Shoe measures don’t conform to any standardised system but vary according to manufacturer. For example, Clarks and Start-rite vary by half a size. A child measuring 4G Clarks should measure 31⁄2G Start-rite.

Why is my child sometimes fitted a different size from that measured? The measure is only a guide - it gives the shoe fitter a starting point. The correct size will depend on a host of other factors including the shape and proportions of the foot (very few feet are ‘average’) as well as the type and shape of the shoe (varying according to brand, construction, materials used). Fitting the correct shoe takes time and requires an experienced fitter.

Does my child need a width fitted shoe? Shoes are ‘fitted’ if they either come in a range of width and length fittings or they have fastenings that allow for adjustment. On the whole some sort of adjustment or variation in fitting is ideal - preferably a combination of fastenings that secure the heel in the back of the shoe, while allowing flexibility across the ball of the foot as this is where the foot bends. However a good fit can also be achieved through the choice of style or brand. Some brands and certain styles are particularly well suited to narrow feet; others are best at fitting wide feet.

How do I know if the shoes fit? We found the following quote on the American podiatry network: ‘fitting shoes is not a science but an art. It takes practice and experience with different types of shoes and feet’. The team at Biff have over 50 years’ experience in shoe fitting and are happy to provide a fitting check.

Why does my child end up in different widths in different shops?

Why do shoes sometimes rub?

This can be due to: differences in shoe construction - the last of different shoes even in the same make varies; differences in the adjustability of the shoe sandals and trainers with Velcro straps are not usually available in different widths as the adjustment comes via altering the straps but they often say ‘F’ on the box. Finally, the shape of the foot may change as it grows. Toddlers tend to have wide feet which may narrow as they grow and become less fleshy.

How long will the shoes last before my child grows out of them? We will always fit with growing room (length and width) but this will vary according to the age of the child and the shape of the foot. Toddler feet usually grow very fast and need to be checked every six to eight weeks. Feet continue to grow, on average, two whole sizes a year until the age of four or five years. This growth is not continual but comes in spurts, so it is important to continue to get shoes checked and expect to replace them every three to six months. For older children growth slows down a little. By school age shoes tend to last around six months.

16

families south east - decembrrr 2010

We will fit as much room as we can - for a toddler/ pre-school child this will be around half a size (about 4.5mm) depending on the style chosen and width of foot. For older children this can increase to around a whole size but this will vary by type of foot (skinny feet, with slim ankles, don’t allow much growing room) and type of shoe (fashion ballet pumps have to fit snugly or they fall off vs. fashion long boots which can generally be fitted with a good size thumb space in front of the toes). For any child, if the shoe is too long they may trip but remember ‘too long’ is proportionate to the overall size of the child and is a question of expert judgement. Growing room in the width of the shoe is as important as length but will tend to vary more by style - trainers, soft leather shoes can be reasonably roomy on the width whereas ballet pumps, Mary Jane styles and stiffer leather school shoes need to fit more snuggly or they may gape or overly crease. Again this is not set in stone but a matter of judgement. Please discuss any concerns with your shoe fitter.

For brand new school shoes, assuming the size is correct, the following tips may help: Wear your normal school socks when the shoes are fitted. Ensure socks are not tight or so loose they become twisted. Some socks have very thick seams - try to avoid these Wear the new shoes around the house for a few hours a day for at least a few days before wearing them to school. After a summer of lightweight shoes school shoes feel stiff If there is no time to pre wear the shoes try and rotate the new shoes with something else, for example walk to school in trainers. The school day is a long day in a new pair of shoes Some children are more prone to blisters and may be better suited to the softest leather shoes available. Some of the more traditional Start-rite shoes are very stiff when new and can take a bit of wearing in If a blister does occur the shoes can still be worn if the blister is covered with a compeed plaster (available at most pharmacists) If you are unsure of the fit or any problems persist beyond the first two weeks, please come back to show us New sandals should be worn with socks wherever possible. Try without socks on a gradual basis but if it is very hot (and feet become sweaty) or you are walking a long way,

w w w. f a m i l i e s s e . c o . u k

use socks. Some toddlers have very sensitive skin so socks may always need to be worn For old shoes, rubbing can be a sign that shoes are getting too small or not fitting as well as they used to - if you come to the shop we can check. In the past, we have also found rubbing due to sock seams, tight socks and due to sand getting inside the shoes.

Are ballet style pumps suitable for schoolwear? These are a fashion fit item favoured by girls and hated by parents, schools and shoe fitters alike! They lack support and cushioning and tend to only really work on the ‘average’ F fit foot. They are not usually very hard wearing and not really designed for active children. Of course, by a certain age peer pressure tends to dominate over common sense so if you are being pressured by your daughter, try to choose a style with a strap and a base unit that is not too flimsy. A strap will give a better fitting and a more solid base will give better support. It is usually very difficult to fit growing room in these styles. We will advise you of this but find parents often assume if it ‘fits for now’ it will last a few months. It might but your child might undergo a growth spurt. It is not recommended to buy these styles on the large size as they may slip excessively at the heel and encourage your child to claw their toes.

Is it OK to wear trainers all the time? We get asked this a lot and have looked at a number of podiatry websites to help get a clear answer. This is the general advice: synthetic trainers can cause very sweaty feet (which in turn can lead to athletes foot) and are not recommended for fulltime wear. In addition they may not show the same natural give and softening as leather shoes. Plimsolls and light weight canvas shoes are also not recommended for fulltime wear as they have very little support and cushioning. We find that most school age children have at least two pairs of shoes but if trainers are their main non-school shoe, consider buying the best quality materials your budget will afford.

What about Crocs? Classic Crocs are not a fitted shoe. They vary only in length and are wide. We can help advise on the size but because they don’t come in a full range of half and whole sizes they tend to be a little big and may not be suitable for all children. We don’t recommend Crocs as your child’s only pair of shoes. However, many parents find them very useful for messy beach or garden play.

Can I pass shoes on? This is not recommended if the shoes have been worn for more than a short while. This is because the shoes will have moulded to the foot shape of the person wearing them and will be uncomfortable/ unsuitable for a different foot. Of course, shoes that are worn for only short periods or occasional wear can be passed on but it is important to check they fit. We are happy to do this for you.

Can I check my child’s size to buy over the internet? The measure is only a guide and not a reliable tool for ordering shoes online.

Which are the best ‘every day’ shoes? Consider the activities your child will undertake in the shoes before making your choice. Certain activities (eg used as a break for scooters) are very destructive to new shoes. If your child has a history of trashing shoes please talk to us as we can recommend certain brands for their robust qualities. The life and appearance of leather shoes is greatly enhanced by using polishes, and nubuck shoes can be preserved with regular sprays with protector. Girls’ shoes/ sandals look very pretty in pastel shades but will get very dirty if worn daily. Some brands use special waterproof linings and can be highly recommended for all purpose wear. However, ask your fitter for advice if you are unhappy with how your child’s shoes are lasting.

Can I buy in the sale for next year?

Biff Childrenswear is open from 9.30am-5.30pm Mondays to Fridays and 10am-6pm on Saturdays. The family-run business has a great range of children’s fashion and basics from head to toe. 43 Dulwich Village, SE21 7BN, 020 8299 0911, www.biffkids.co.uk.

This can be tricky as you can’t accurately predict growth and need to be aware of changes in the season (there’s no point buying sandals that won’t fit until the winter). Also, be aware that shoes may be in the sale as they were very narrow or very wide (no point buying a size too large in a narrow style if your child has wide feet). However if you establish from a fitting how the shoes fit and try them on your child on a regular basis (we are happy to check) then it is possible to find some good shoe buys in the sale.

Dyslexia support Parents whose children have dyslexia often talk of their frustration in finding support and help, or knowing where to turn for more advice. The Bloomfield Learning Centre is a small charity based at Guy’s Hospital, which assesses and teaches 6-16 year-olds with specific learning difficulties such as dyslexia, dyspraxia, ADHD and Asperger’s Syndrome. Teaching at the centre is individual and multi-sensory, with OCR, Hornsby and Sounds Write trained teachers. Bloomfield also provides training in dyslexia awareness, synthetic phonics and helping children learn to read. The training is for teachers, teaching assistants and parents, and is available on site and in schools. Three centre teachers have recently published a synthetic phonics reading scheme, Dandelion Readers, which is already in use in hundreds of schools throughout the country and available through www.phonicbooks.co.uk. Children can be referred to the centre by parents, schools or GPs, depending on who’s funding the assessment, with a means-tested charging system enabling Bloomfield to help as many children as possible, regardless of their families’ financial situation. This year’s national Sats results show that reading levels among primary school pupils fell for the second year running. Support at home is known to have a great impact on children’s achievements, particularly when parents and carers read to children and look at books together. Meanwhile, families with an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad are turning to technology to help them. Abc PocketPhonics introduces reading in a way that matches the national curriculum, using ‘synthetic phonics’. Developer John Friend said; “Not only does this ‘app’ teach children to read, it helps them to write too. Children trace the letters with their finger on the touch sensitive screen and get a hearty applause as a reward when they do well. We’ve heard some remarkable stories - one mum emailed in saying; ‘My son is not even three and already he can read all his alphabet, and can spell out anything I put in front of him.’” Abc PocketPhonics is £1.19 from the Apple App Store. Enterprising children Thanks to a new business initiative, pupils from Bonneville primary school in Clapham are running their own healthy school tuck shop. Fruit to Suit runs training workshops and tuck shop challenges to show children how they can set up, run and manage their tuck shops. The sessions cover all the practicalities, from ordering stock to advertising, providing invaluable business and enterprise skills. The benefits of a healthier tuck shop are innumerable - children are encouraged to eat more fruit and vegetables and try a wider variety of food, developing healthier eating habits which are vital in the prevention of excess weight and obesity. Cash from trash According to recent figures from DEFRA, over 35 million ink cartridges are disposed of in the UK each year, most of which go straight to landfill where they take over 1000 years to decompose. Support Your School is a new recycling scheme which aims to raise £5m for schools through collecting old mobile phones and empty printer cartridges. Launched by Britain’s best known vocal coaches, Carrie and David Grant from Fame Academy, the fundraising scheme will raise millions for schools as well as reducing by 10% the number of inkjet cartridges going to landfill. Participating schools receive £1 for each empty ink cartridge, and £3 for unwanted mobile phones. The scheme is free to join, and encourages schoolteachers, pupils, parents and the community to get involved in recycling and reducing individual schools’ carbon footprint.
