FAMILY HEALTH AND WELLBEING DOES YOUR CHILD NEED REGULAR EYE TESTS?

Research has recently revealed that almost 6 in 10 parents in the UK are unaware that their children need to have an eye test at least every two years.

If you’ve been told either that your child is too young, that you should only get their eyes tested if they have a problem, or that they have to be able to read to have an eye test, your child is missing out on a vital health check.

Opticians can look after the eyes of children, toddlers and even babies and the earlier an eye problem is detected, the better. If you’re wondering when to start getting your child’s eyes checked, do make sure that they are seen as a toddler, well before they start school. Some eye conditions, such as squint eye and lazy eye can be treated more effectively if they are discovered by the age of three.

If you don’t already attend an optical practice yourself, ask friends for recommendations. Some practices specialise in eye care for small children, while others are well set up for children with special needs.

Children under 16 get the cost of their eye test covered by the NHS and also get a voucher towards the cost of a pair of spectacles, so there is no need for any child to miss out on eye care.

Once your child has had their eyes checked, the optician will let you know how often they need to visit. For many people, every two years is fine, but they may suggest your child visits every six months or every year, depending on their particular needs.

So, act now. Make sure your toddler gets a thorough eye examination at your local optical practice.

COOKING WITH CHOCOLATE!

Just in time for Halloween, here are a few tips on using chocolate for baking.

Working with Chocolate Have you ever tried melting chocolate only for it to clump into a big mess?! Knowing a little about it before you begin will save you a big headache later on.

Chocolate that you buy has been ‘tempered’- heated and cooled a number of times to very precise temperature ranges to create crystals which give it a firm set and shiny look. Tempered chocolate ‘snaps’ when broken and is hard enough to be wrapped and kept at room temperature without melting or leaving chocolate residue on its packaging. Chocolate will differ in hardness based on brand and purpose for use. Use the hardest tempered chocolate you can find in the baking aisle to give you the best set.

Melting chocolate can cause it to lose its ‘temper.’ This results in a product that is not hard at room temperature. To avoid this: Never Combine Chocolate with Water If even a drop of water gets into your bowl, or you use a damp spoon, you can seize an entire bowl of melted chocolate. Your mixture will get thick, clumpy and grainy and it is nearly always impossible to salvage. You will not be able to use it for dipping, but if you add about a tablespoon of vegetable oil or shortening and mix until smooth, the chocolate may be suitable for recipes that need melted chocolate, like brownies, cookies, or syrups. Remember to only use flavourings or colours which contain oils and NOT water.

Melt at the Lowest Heat Possible Overheated chocolate will also seize, so melt it at the lowest possible heat until smooth.

Place an inch or so of water in the pot of a double boiler, place it over low heat, and put the chocolate in the pan on top to melt – it should never touch the water. Microwaving is another alternative. For me, it works best to microwave at 50% power, stirring every

30 seconds for about a minute and a half.

However, every microwave is different so err on the side of caution. ✤ If your chocolate is nearly melted, don’t risk overheating it by putting it back in the microwave. Instead, stir until the small chunks have been melted by the hot chocolate. If your chocolate is still not melted after a minute and a half, microwave it for only another 15 seconds or so. ✤ If your chocolate has seized as a result of overheating, you can try adding a tablespoon of vegetable oil or shortening.

If you can mix it smooth, you may still be able to use it for dipping. If not, you can still use it for cookies and brownies as mentioned above. ✤ If your chocolate has not seized, but you think you have overheated it, try to salvage the temper by using the seed method. Add a handful or so of solid (unmelted) chocolate to your bowl and stir until the temperature of the chocolate mixture has come down and the chocolate chunks are completely melted. Don’t mix brands of chocolate though. ✤ If you dip something in chocolate and it never sets at room temperature, you have overheated your chocolate. Try melting at a lower heat next time.

How To Help Your Children Listen

“Most people do not listen with the intent to understand; they listen with the intent to reply.” Steven Covey Parents can get frustrated when they feel their children are not listening to them. I recently spoke to a mother in this situation who requested of her son “look at me when I’m speaking to you.” Why did this particular mother ask her son to do this, when she would be unlikely to use those words to another adult, unless she was particularly angry or stressed? Perhaps she was thinking that her son never listens to her, that he is never going to learn to listen, that he is rude or bad-mannered or even that he will never get anywhere in life.

The boy’s reply was “Mummy, you don’t listen with your eyes!”

Good point well made. Children may be listening even when they give the impression they are not – by looking away, day dreaming, or playing with a toy.

Listening is a skill that we are not explicitly taught and although we generally acquire the skill naturally, some of us are better at it than others! If children are going to listen to us, then we need to model deep empathetic listening and show them we are listening to them by perspective-taking - in other words putting ourselves in their shoes.

From my experience, there are four main levels of listening: the 4 E’s Expecting Listening Hearing what you want to hear.

For instance, your child comes back from school and says he’s forgotten his book bag. This confirms your belief that ‘he always forgets his book bag.’

Ego Listening Listening for something that challenges your beliefs. This invites confrontation as you are essentially

waiting for your child to say something you disagree with. For instance,“I want a phone,” to which you will reply “no, you’re not old enough.”

Empathetic Listening Seeing from their perspective.

Using the words, “What do you need?” “I understand….” And “I’m wondering…” help you to see things from your child’s viewpoint.

Experiential Listening When both parent and child change and learn from each other.

Reflect on a time when your child says something and you think ‘I’ve never really thought about it like that before,’ and you offer your perspective. Those moments are examples of experiential listening.

You and your child have learnt something new together and, as a result, you both view life in a slightly different way.

As a parent it is unrealistic

to always listen at a deeper experiential listening level when you are busy and your child is talking endlessly about Minecraft, football or Frozen! However, try to avoid the following examples of Expecting and Ego Listening: ✤ Interrupting or finishing your child’s sentences ✤ Judging a situation Explaining or justifying the situation from your perspective, not theirs ✤ One-upmanship eg ‘I know how that feels. “It happened to me and it was much worse….” ✤ Sympathising without empathy eg “Oh. I know……” ✤ Distracting eg “Don’t worry it will be fine. Just think of something nice.” ✤ Denying eg “Don’t be silly, you’re not upset, just tired.”

So how can we have more moments of Empathetic and Experiential listening? ✤ Support your child’s story – give space and time to hear their understanding of their experience ✤ Let them know that you are there if they need someone to listen ✤ Reflect back their language when it feels authentic to do so ✤ Give them space to reflect – don’t worry about long silences ✤ Encourage them to come up with their own understanding of the situation, rather than telling them what to do ✤ Give attention and be present ✤ Perspective-take – imagine how you might feel in the same situation and put yourself in your child’s shoes ✤ Listen to the emotions and feelings behind the words and the silences without judgement, blame or shame.

Having an awareness of different types of listening can help us listen more openly to our children and can have an amazing impact on how they listen to us. If we show compassion and love when we listen, our children learn that listening is the key to amazing relationships.

Going directly to the head is a bit like them phoning your boss whenever your child misbehaves! ✤ Remember that teachers are human. They sometimes make mistakes, so try to forgive them for it.

Research shows that the better your relationship with your child’s school, the more they will enjoy learning and do well.

However it’s often impossible to know what really goes on at school – children are not very forthcoming when it comes to recounting their day. If they do raise any issues, or if you sense something is amiss, it can be difficult to ascertain the full details and to know whether

Most parents have only have a short ten minute session at Parent’s Evening to get a feel for their child’s teacher and may hardly ever see school staff, especially if they don’t do drop off or pick up. with an aspect of how the school is relating to your child and feeling angry and defensive. It’s easy for such a meeting to become tense.

Don’t underestimate the fact that the teacher is likely to be feeling a bit uncomfortable too!

Here are a few tips for successful communication with your child’s teacher: ✤ Assume the best. Your child’s teacher is a trained professional who understands the curriculum as well as child development.

They also want the same outcome as you - a happy child who is learning. ✤ Let teachers know if there are problems at home. You don’t have to go into graphic detail, just tell them if something’s happened which may affect your child’s behaviour. ✤ Please don’t assume that your child always tells the truth about what goes on at school! After all, teachers don’t automatically believe what your child tells them about what goes on at home. ✤ Remain calm and neutral.

“Little Johnny came home rather upset about xxx, I wondered what your take on it is…,” rather than “Why did you shout at Little Johnny like that?” ✤ Mediation is helpful.

Fostering Closer Home-School Links Get an insight into how things are run and improve your relationship with the school by volunteering.

These are the types of roles available: Parent Helper Helping out in class can be fun and rewarding. Research shows that having a parent who volunteers improves a child’s experience of school.

Organise a DBS (Disclosure and Barring Service) check and you can then volunteer regularly or as a one-off.

School Trips If you’ve had the DBS check, this one is great for ingratiating yourself. On what is invariably a stressful day, a responsible parent helping out can be a lifesaver!

Use your Expertise Maybe there’s a school club that would fit your skill set or interests. If not, you could talk to the class or even do an assembly. One volcanologist parent at my son’s school did a legendary presentation including exploding volcanoes!

Join the PTA The PTA usually organises the school’s fundraising projects, from fetes to family quiz nights. Run by committee, they may include ‘class reps’ which pass on information from other parents in the class.

School Governors Comprising parent governors and other community members, this group of elected volunteers helps to make management decisions, run buildings and budgets, support staff and set disciplinary standards.

The UK’s education system has traditionally been far less test-centric than its counterparts in countries such as the USA, where last year saw children actively boycotting and protesting against the test-culture. In the USA, children are tested annually and these tests dictate whether they progress into the next year or are held back. Children feel a lot of pressure to do well.

Parents want them to do well, but feel simultaneously concerned and disappointed at the way in which creative and life-skills can be side-lined in their children’s academic lives.

In the UK, the move towards the new curriculum and introduction of new assessments such as the the Baseline Assessment tests, Phonics Screening check, and KS2 SATS including the new SPAG test, are disturbing many parents, who are concerned that too much emphasis is being placed on teaching children to pass tests.

So what exactly are these tests?

The Baseline Test 1:1 formal test that will take place within a few weeks of a child starting school. It focusses on a child’s literacy and numeracy to

generate a ‘baseline’ against which to measure progress to Key Stage One and Two. The baseline test has received a lot of criticism. However, if delivered in the right way, a child will not be aware of being assessed and the results will provide valuable data that teachers can use to track a child’s progress.

Looking at the rate of progress each child is making is really positive, as every child is different and learns at a different pace.

The test will enable teachers to be recognised for the difference they are making to each individual pupil, rather than getting a whole cohort to one level.

The Phonics Screening Check Taken by pupils in Year 1, this test is designed to confirm whether pupils have learnt phonic decoding to an appropriate standard. It will identify pupils who need extra help to improve their decoding skills. The check consists of 20 real words and 20 pseudo-words that a pupil reads aloud to the teacher. Pupils must also take the check in Year 2 if they didn’t meet the required standard in Year 1 or haven’t taken it before.

KS2 SATS National Curriculum tests which are taken by pupils at age 11 at the end of Key Stage 2.

Tests include: THE SPAG TEST An English grammar, punctuation and spelling test which assesses a child’s English skills in four key areas: spelling, punctuation, grammar, and vocabulary.

ENGLISH READING TEST based on reading comprehension of three texts, with a total of 35 to 40 questions of increasing difficulty.

THREE WRITTEN MATHS TESTS AND A MENTAL MATHS TEST The new KS2 SATS will initially see pupils and schools judged on test results, as there is no historical data to evaluate progress for each individual pupil. So the tests will be tough and those sitting them in May 2016 are going to be challenged with material that would

previously have been expected of children a year or two older. With this amount of extra material to learn it’s natural that schools will feel the need to tailor their focus to the test.

The new curriculum set out to provide a creative, collaborative experience for children in both maths and English but the KS2 SATS tests focus on the mechanics of maths and English and don’t include any creative problem solving activities in maths or any opportunities for children to demonstrate their skills in creative writing. The danger here is that the narrowness of the tests could flow into a narrow focus of learning during lessons.

Despite the increase in testing children in the UK, I remain positive that a test-culture like that of the USA will be avoided. It’s vital that the UK education system maintains a balance between creating a love of learning in children and nurturing their creative talents and passions, whilst simultaneously teaching them in a way that enables them to pass tests. The majority of teachers feel similarly and we need to trust in the intention they have to preserve this balance for our children.

What school do you want your child to go to, how should you apply and will they be offered a place? If your child is due to start school in September 2016, then it’s time to start considering these matters.

They must go through a rigorous application process and meet UK educational standards.

Debunk the Myths

“I live in the “catchment area.”

Schools use a number of factors to determine admission. Proximity is only one of them and it’s not always at the top of the list. Just because you live close to the school, it doesn’t guarantee you a place.

“My child is on the waiting list for the local school.”

There is no such thing. Admission applications for state schools can only be made during the application period for that year’s intake.

“I already have older children at the school.” It might be an advantage at a lot of schools but there are no guarantees.

“My child is in nursery attached to the school.” This does

not automatically guarantee a place in the Reception class. You must still go through the admissions process.

Ignore the myths, do your homework, understand the process and make sensible choices.

Understand the Admissions Criteria for Your Preferred Schools If you are considering independent school options, each handles its own admissions timetable and process. Contact each of your preferred schools directly.

At all state schools, priority is given to children who are in the care of the local authority and then to those who can demonstrate a specific social, emotional or educational need to attend a particular school. From there some of the criteria that are used include (but are not limited to) siblings already attending the school, distance from home, religious

affiliation and several others. Each school will apply these in different ways. It is vital that you understand the admissions criteria that each school will use when offering places.

Submit Your Application With the rare exception of some religious or free schools, the admissions department of the local authority manages admissions.

The school’s website will tell you whether you should apply to the local authority or to them.

Every local authority will have a comprehensive online application guide including process and dates.

You will be asked to select up to six preferences. The popularity of a school may affect your chance of being offered a place so your preferences should include at least one, if not more, schools where your child meets one of the higher admission criteria. If you are low down the criteria list on all your preferences, you may not be offered any of your choices and instead be allocated a place at a school you don’t want, possibly outside your catchment area.

The reality is that, in this local area with its good performing, popular schools, the best chance of gaining an outcome with which you are happy is to be sensible about your preferences.

Jo Jingles enters the Night Garden!

This autumn, Jo Jingles has been chosen by popular CBeebies show In the Night Garden to introduce songs and characters from the show in its classes.

Jo Jingles classes are already popular and the phenomenal popularity of In the Night Garden will make them even more exciting, as will the special poster, work book and stickers that children in the classes will receive.

Jo Jingles classes for ages 3 months to 5 years have been running for 25 years now. They are carefully structured over 45 minutes, and introduce a new, fun theme each week, such as colours and shapes and numbers and animals. Children also get “hands-on” experience with at least two percussion instruments each week, and enjoy props such as parachutes, beanbags and bubbles. Sessions for ages 3+ include a music theory module and children can enjoy colouring sheets to take home and

follow up what they have learned in class.

Classes help develop communication and numeracy skills, co-ordination and discipline, but above all they are fun – for teachers, parents and children! Halloween Fun for Everyone with the National Trust!

PUMPKIN FUN BYO pumpkin to Claremont Landscape Garden in Esher on Thursday, 29 Oct (10.30am to 12.30pm) or join Osterley Park for its Pumpkin Festival on 24 and 25 October (11am to 4pm) for pumpkin carving, family crafts, games, trails and storytelling.

SPOOKY ADVENTURES Tackle the Osterley Night Run on 31 October! The family-friendly, pumpkin-lit Explorer Route is 2 km long and weaves past the Temple of Pan and round the Great Meadow – a unique Halloween adventure!

Wizard Weekend at the Watercress Line!

On 30 and 31 October, watch the Watercress Line in Hampshire transform into a place of magic and mischief!

Walk in Harry Potter’s footsteps over the railway footbridge where he received his Hogwarts Express ticket - the famous film location from Kings Cross station that is now housed at the Watercress Line!

really high above the ground and you whizz around until they start to fly higher into the air. I loved feeling the wind in my hair!

We headed for some Creepy Caves, where we saw spiders, reptiles and a massive boa constrictor. In another cave, the Hocus Pocus Hall, I had to wear 3D glasses while I walked around looking at trolls and other strange creatures. The mirrors at the end were really confusing and eerie.

It was dark outside when we left the Hocus Pocus Hall and VERY SPOOKY! Then we watched some of the scary rides that I was too young to go on this time. On Rameses Revenge people were hanging

upside down and even the grown ups were screaming! There was also the Kobra, Rattlesnake and Dragons Fury rollercoaster that looked incredible!

I thought the Monkey Swinger was the scariest ride, but then I went on the Dragon Falls! We started moving in our little boat which travelled up and up and then we curled around, up some more and then WHOOSH! Straight down! I got soaked! It was exciting and I can’t wait to do it again.

There was so much to do that we ran out of time, but I kept my map and made a list of the rides and animals for next time. These are walking with the monkeys in Amazu, floating through Bubbleworks, visiting the big cats and Gorillas and going on Zufari. I might even see how I feel about the Dragons Fury rollercoaster. I want to go another 2000 times!

Enjoy a Hobbledown Half Term!

Gothic castle, Strawberry Hill House in Twickenham casts its bewitching spell again this year with a series of workshops and storytelling events for children on 29 and 30 October.

Kids can dress up in their favourite costumes, transforming themselves into different Halloween-themed creatures and characters. As the night darkens, they will be enchanted and delighted by interactive story sessions in Spooky Stories. Sessions will take place on both days at 5pm for under 5s and 6.30pm for ages 5 to 8.

Using their imaginations, children will explore strange lands through drama activities, create spooky shadows and soundscapes that echo through the castle and decide how to end the ghost stories they’ll help to shape!

Mini monsters age 5+ can take part in the Confusing Concoctions Workshop

at 2pm (both days) and befuddle friends by creating powerful spells and potions, using glitter, wallpaper paste, paint and other ‘nightmare’ craft materials you won’t want to use at home! Specially for the under 5s, are spellbinding Little Witches and Wizards Workshops at 11am (both days) in which little ones can transform themselves into little witches and wizards and cast a spell or two.

There’s also plenty of space in the gardens for a picnic, zombie ‘it’ and broom-flying practice, with warming drinks and treats at the Cloisters Café to restore energy levels afterwards!

Beating the Post Natal Blues

Having a baby is usually thought of as a happy time. However, as a new mother, you may not necessarily feel happy straight away. It’s normal to feel exhausted after the birth, and tired from lack of sleep or broken sleep afterwards. Mums often feel overwhelmed with the responsibility of a new baby and may doubt their ability to be a good mother.

There are three mood disorders caused by pregnancy and birth: Baby Blues Feeling emotional and tearful within the first week to 10 days of giving birth is linked to hormonal changes and so common (around 85% of mums experience it) that it is considered normal. New fathers may also feel it. Although having the baby blues may be distressing, it doesn’t last long – usually only a few days – and is generally quite manageable. Getting as much rest as possible really helps.

Postpartum Psychosis At the other end of the spectrum, this is a rare, sudden onset depression, occurring after about 1 to 2 in every 1,000 births. It usually begins in the first 2 weeks after childbirth and is a serious illness, requiring specialist medical treatment. Symptoms may include: Seeing things that aren’t there Feeling confused Rapid mood swings Trying to hurt yourself or your baby Postnatal Depression (PND) Around 10 to 15% of new mothers develop this much deeper and longer-term depression. In fact, this is the most common obstetric complication following birth (much more than any physical problem), but until fairly recently it hasn’t been duly recognised. It usually develops within six weeks of giving birth (or can start during the pregnancy) and can come on either gradually or suddenly.

It’s a serious illness that involves the brain. With depression, sad, anxious, or ‘empty’ feelings don’t go away and interfere with daily life and routines. These feelings can be mild to severe.

What to Do If you have two or more of the above symptoms of PND for more than two weeks, the most important first step is to tell someone (your partner, a friend or health professional) how you are feeling.

You may be reluctant to do so – many women feel embarrassed, ashamed, or guilty about feeling depressed when they are supposed to be happy. They worry they will be labelled as mad or that their baby being taken away from them.

It’s important to understand that any woman can become depressed during pregnancy or after having a baby. It doesn’t mean you are a bad mother, or that you don’t love your baby. If you are feeling depressed during pregnancy or after having a baby, don’t suffer alone.

You can help yourself by: ✤ Resting as much as you can and sleep when the baby is sleeping ✤ Not doing too much or trying to be perfect ✤ Asking your partner, family, and friends for help ✤ Making time to go out, visit friends, or spending time alone with your partner ✤ Discussing your feelings with your partner, family, and friends ✤ Developing your own network of support; for example, by keeping in touch with people you may have met at your antenatal classes, and going to parent-and-baby groups locally.

You need professional help if: ✤ Your symptoms of depression become more intense ✤ It is hard for you to perform tasks at home ✤ You cannot care for yourself or your baby ✤ You have thoughts of harming yourself or your baby If you experience thoughts about death or harming yourself or the baby, this can be very frightening, and may make you feel as if you are going mad or are completely out of control. It’s important to realise that having these thoughts doesn’t mean that you are actually going to harm yourself or your baby.

Help is available. Your doctor can refer you to a mental health professional who specializes in treating depression, and your maternity unit may have a specialist Perinatal (‘around birth’) Mental Health Service which can help you. The good news is that most people with PND get better with treatment.

Treatment can include talking to a therapist or psychologist to learn to change how depression makes you think, feel, and act and/or antidepressant medication. This medication can help relieve symptoms of depression, and there are safe options to use during pregnancy and whilst breastfeeding.

Your midwife, health visitor and GP can also help with practical, social support.

Organising Your Maternity Care

Finding out that you are pregnant is a bit like joining a new, rather popular club. You are excited, don’t quite know what to expect and want to do it all right.

You can approach your GP first, and also sign up online for the hospital of your choice. Even if you are planning a home birth, it is worth signing up with a hospital in order to access blood tests and scans.

During pregnancy, you will be cared for by a midwife who ideally should be a guide and mentor. This works best if you have continuity of care, which unfortunately is not always possible from NHS maternity services. Private independent midwifery care ensures that, apart from scans, all antenatal appointments (usually around 12 with private care) take place at home with your own midwife who will be on call to attend to your concerns and worries. She will

also be the midwife who cares for you in labour and postnatally and becomes a trusted guide who accompanies you every step of the way to parenthood.

Most women under NHS care will have 7 to 10 antenatal appointments with their midwife.

By 10 Weeks The First Appointment The midwife will discuss your past and present health, your family health history, any pregnancy related issues and your plans for the pregnancy.

She may also take some blood to check iron levels, for evidence of past/present infections and immunity and to determine your blood group.

Sometimes this is done later with the other screening bloods around the time of your first scan.

You will be given your maternity record which you take to every appointment for updating by the midwife.

11 to 13 Weeks Nuchal Scan

Arranged by your midwife, this assesses your personal risk level for Down’s Syndrome and other chromosomal abnormalities.

A blood test may also be used to improve accuracy. Some women choose to go to a private ultrasound clinic for this and may choose a new test called the Harmony Test which, although it is still a screening, is considerably more accurate.

18 to 23 Weeks Anomaly Scan This looks at the overall development of the baby, the location and functioning of the placenta and may tell you the sex of your baby.

At or around 16, 28, 34, 38, 40 and 41 Weeks Your urine and blood pressure will be checked in order to identify any signs of pre-eclampsia which is a very serious condition for you and your baby. The midwife will also measure the size of your uterus which roughly grows at the rate of 1 cm per week of pregnancy. From about 34 to 36 weeks, she will also locate the position of your baby and listen to the fetal heart.

She will also discuss your wellbeing and any issues you may have, your diet and lifestyle, whether you are going to antenatal classes and your plans for the birth.

28 Week Blood Tests Blood tests are repeated and women in risk categories for gestational diabetes may be offered a glucose tolerance test.

You can decline any test if you wish.

As Your Due Date Approaches At 34 weeks, a midwife will review your blood results, provide information on place of birth and caesarean section.

At 36 weeks, she will discuss breastfeeding and baby care, vitamin K and newborn screening and postnatal issues.

At 38 weeks, she may discuss your options if your pregnancy is prolonged.

At 41 weeks, information about induction of labour will be offered.

As the birth draws near, the midwife will focus on plans for the birth and may offer a visit to the Birth Centre or Delivery Suite. At every appointment, she will be alert to any signs suggesting that you might need to see an obstetrician and will arrange that if necessary.

How to Survive a Sleepover Party

By Sarah Butters Love them or hate them, there is no escaping the fact that, at some point, you will be asked to host a sleepover.

So how can you survive it – and how can you avoid repeating the experience in the future?

Small Group Only invite a small group to a sleepover.

Late Drop, Early Collect The thought of a sleepover is marginally more bearable if you focus on when it will end.

Make it clear at the point of invite when your hospitality begins and ends. I’ve found a late afternoon drop-off to coincide with dinner time works best – and a pick up no later than 9 or 10am the next morning. This means your exhausted guests, now suffering from an additive hangover, can have their post sleepover meltdown in the comfort of their own homes. You are left with a full day to scrape melted chocolate and squashed Haribo from the carpet.

Be Ready for Emergencies Discuss with parents of invited children any allergies, medication, comfort objects or other needs.

Have a Plan Don’t imagine that five 8 year olds will be able to occupy themselves without incident. They won’t. Or, if they do, rest assured it will end in tired tears. Follow teatime with a fun activity

– karaoke, Wii fun or a board game, before a DVD to take you through until bedtime.

It has been known for parents to put their children through 100 bounces on the garden trampoline prior to bedtime to maximize exhaustion - but you may feel that’s a step too far.

Prepare for Late Night Leavers There’s a pretty high chance that one of your guests will want to leave. The reality of a night spent away from home can be a little too much for some children. Homesickness is catching and once one begins to wobble, you could find your other guests follow suit. Make sure you have parent contact details for all your guests in case you do need to make a late night collection call.

Keep it Simple Think camping indoors and you’ve got the perfect sleepover. One of my daughter’s favourite nights away from home saw seven children sleeping top to toe, in sleeping bags on the bedroom floor of their friend. Not a king size Aerobed in sight. Get yours at www.slpy.com Admit Defeat You aren’t going to be able to stay up late enough to check your guests are all asleep.

Their very purpose is to ‘stay up’ later than you, so in many ways, reminding them you are still awake only makes for a later bedtime.

Lay out the ground rules when you say your final (ish) goodnight - these may include no-go areas of the house or garden and what’s allowed on the music and television fronts. Let the sleepover guests know where you are sleeping and let them know they can wake you in an emergency. Then, leave them to it. Some will fall asleep, some will chat and only in the very worst case scenario will they raid your sweet cupboards in the early hours to replenish their sleep-starved bodies.

Removal of electrical devices is a good move – especially in tweenage girls – as the cyber world can be an inviting but frightening place in the small hours of the morning.

Keep Your Diary Clear Plan NOTHING for the following day. You will have slept like a meerkat balancing on a branch. Your child will have crashed late and woken with the lark. In short, your family is fit for nothing and planning even the most straight forward activity is doomed to failure.

As night falls, raise a glass to the fact you survived your first sleepover. Like childbirth, you’ll need some time to forget the pain before you do it all again.

LOCAL THEATRE GUIDE This half term, Watermans in Brentford will be going dino crazy in Dinosaur Week, with theatre highlight What To Do When You Find a Dinosaur, described by The Guardian as ‘a show that takes the skeleton of recorded fact and locates the funny bone.’ Families can follow the hilarious adventures of scientist William Buckland as he discovers the Megalosaurus and tells the world about it, in this bone-shaking, music-making, silly show. Performances run from 28 October to 31 October at 11am and 3pm.

Dinosaur Week will see the Watermans Bar transformed into Dinosaur Land. Children can enjoy play sessions (ages 0-3) and interactive adventures (ages 3-8) from Tea Dance for Little People, including the chance to make dino feet, jump into a volcano and go on a treasure hunt! For children ages 8 to11, a fun, drama workshop Dinosaur Drama Adventure will explore what happens when the dinosaurs escape from the theme park.

Yes, it will be Watermans answer to Jurassic Park! Other highlights include dino bath-bomb making and an appearance by a real live dinosaur. Start guessing now, will it be a plant-eater or a meat-eater?

classic tales like Lyngo Theatre’s Puss in Boots (18 October) (‘Storytelling at its best’ Mumsnet) and The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse (22 November) from Pied Piper Theatre. There are also adaptations of much-loved books Rosie’s Magic Horse (25 October) by Quentin Blake and Russell Hoban and Oddly (11 October), a quirky and charming adaptation of Joyce Dunbar’s book. And, not to be forgotten, is CBBC’s infamous Little Howard and the Magic Pencil of Life and Death, a real life and animated comedy duo live on stage.

With tickets at such reasonable prices (£7.00 per ticket for the majority of shows), it’s really worth putting a few theatre

dates in your diary this autumn.
