Bridgewater School is 60 years old! THIS SEPTEMBER marked the start of Bridgewater School in Worsley’s 60th Anniversary year with celebrations kicking off at the school’s prize giving event, held at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester. Bridgewater School is an independent, co-educational school for pupils aged 3 to 18. Their reputation has been built on treating everyone as an individual. ‘We don’t try to mould anyone into the ‘Bridgewater Way’ – there is always room to breathe. Our pupils flourish because our close knit family environment allows them to develop their full potential, both academic and personal’ This year marks the start of an exciting new era for the School with the appointment of a new Head Teacher, Mrs Judy Nairn. Judy is no stranger to the school, having worked there for 26 years, holding the positions of Deputy
Head and Head of the Preparatory Department. A new EYFS unit opened in September providing a spacious, purpose created area for the Nursery and Reception classes. The school also benefits from a new Independent Learning Centre, housing a bright and modern library and IT facility. If you want to find out more, then why not go along to the open day on Saturday 6 November. For more information, call 0161 794 1463 or visit www.bridgewater–school.co.uk
Creative Kids Parents Keep Calm Parties entertain and Carry On at the X-Factor TANTRUMS, cyber bullying, self esteem, PARTY organisers, Creative Kids Parties recently entertained the crowds at the Manchester auditions of the X-Factor, where they did facepainting and balloon modelling (you can find them as a supplier on the X-Factor website!) News & Views Santa’s sending letters this year THIS year Father Christmas will be sending personalised letters to children ahead of his annual visit. The NSPCC’s Letter from Santa fundraising initiative gives family and friends the chance to send someone special a magical letter from Santa for a suggested donation of £5. The letter is personalised with the child’s name and age and confirms that Santa and his sleigh will be stopping off in their home town to wish everyone a Merry Christmas (I’m trying to get them to include the caveat ‘as long as you’ve been good’ – Ed). The letter is written in a hand script font and is beautifully illustrated on quality colourful paper. The envelope shows that it’s been safely delivered through ‘Express Rudolph Mail’. Anyone who orders a Letter from Santa is also in with a chance of winning the trip of a lifetime to Lapland, courtesy of Lastminute.com. To order a Letter from Santa for a child you know, either in the UK or abroad, visit www.nspcc.org.uk/santa or call 0845 839 9304. You’ll need to place your order by 17 December!
Families Magazines are 20 years old! TODAY Families Manchester is part of a thriving group of franchised magazines across the UK from the Solent to Fife, but 20 years ago it was a much smaller operation. The first issue in October 1990 was a cut and paste affair in black and white - meaning scissors and glue, not copy and paste! The very first edition, Families South West, had a mere 4,000 print run, and colour wasn’t to be seen until Oct 2000. Even when the experts said that “it would never work in publishing,” Families started franchising the magazine in 1995. There are now 30 editions of Families in the UK and well over 500,000 copies are printed across the group, being read by an estimated 1.25 million parents across the country. But throughout it all, Families has remained true to the original thinking, a hands-on magazine for busy parents with useful information, centred around the local community. We think (well of course we would) that Families is, and always will be, the best source of local information, news, events and what’s on for parents. When the World Wide Web beckoned in the late 1990s, we were there. Families has had a web presence from 1997; our own site www.familiesonline.co.uk was launched in 2000 and last December saw a massive re-launch of the website. The Families website is a powerful resource that currently reaches into nearly all areas of the UK. Local editors look after their own local section, filled with local articles, listings, discussion forums and free small ads. Register as a user and find at the bottom of your chosen articles a list of relevant companies local to you. No more searching, the info comes to you. This is simply unique. Have a look at www.familiesmanchester.co.uk to see what’s on offer. Here’s to the next 20 years!

Health & Family Coping with Christmas THE post Christmas divorce peak – so called “Black Monday” - has become a regular fixture in family lawyers’ calendars, when the strains of the festive season take their toll on struggling relationships. But 11 months on and those same families – and many others besides them - are facing their first Christmas apart. Here, professionals from Separation Solutions – a group committed to helping families through relationship breakdown by working things out together – share advice with Families Manchester about coping with Christmas. The important thing to remember is that although you are separating, you are both still parents and it’s important to maintain that relationship. Using collaborative law – where you sit down with your ex partner and work things out together with the help of lawyers who commit to staying out of court - to help you through your separation enables you to do that. Often, working things out in this way means
you reach a solution that involves extended family too. What you are aiming to achieve is that your children will remember happy Christmases and not battles between parents, which studies have shown to have a lasting and harmful effect on children. We would advise separating parents to: Plan early – start thinking about your arrangements for Christmas early – together – to avoid arguments later. Pre-arrange handover times, and stick to them. Try to be positive with your ex so that any tension there may be between you isn’t passed on to your children. Put the children first – don’t ask your children to choose between you when it comes to where they spend Christmas. These are difficult decisions that should be made by adults. Ask your children how they want to spend their time, and listen without putting pressure on them. When you’ve reached a decision, explain it so that they know what’s going to happen. Avoid unnecessary competition – don’t
compete with your ex with over indulgent Christmas presents. Discuss what gifts to buy so you don’t duplicate. Why not keep up the tradition of a joint present from you both? Be willing to compromise - even if the arrangements this year aren’t your ideal choice, be gracious about it. Not just for the children’s sake but for your own, too. You can talk about different arrangements next year. Separation Solutions Manchester is a friendly group of local professionals committed to helping couples divorce with dignity by providing collaborative law, finance and wellbeing advice and support to families across the region. For more information or a free initial chat about your options, visit www.separationsolutions.co.uk or call 01904 610077.
Acupuncture - an alternative approach to children’s health TRADITIONAL acupuncture, with its roots in Chinese medicine, has been used to restore, nourish and maintain good health by billions of people for thousands of years. Treatment involves insertion of ultra fine, single-use, sterile and disposable needles into a system of acupuncture points just under the skin. Many people are gaining confidence in acupuncture as the leading alternative medicine of choice, yet are often unaware of the many uses it has for children and also in pregnancy, childbirth and postnatal care. Some parents may think acupuncture is not suitable for treating their children despite the
enormous benefits it can achieve. However, paediatric acupuncture is growing in popularity within the western hemisphere as it is a gentle, safe and effective treatment for babies, children and teenagers for a wide range of conditions. When treating babies and young children the needles used are even finer than those used on adults, they are not retained but inserted and removed immediately. In some cases it is not appropriate to use needles, therefore other treatment methods can be used. Some of these techniques can even be taught to parents to use on children safely at home in between treatments.
Common complaints affecting babies such as colic, teething pains and night terrors, can be quickly and easily addressed by acupuncture. As children grow, it is natural and healthy for them to learn to fight illness - the challenges of common childhood complaints can contribute towards developing a healthy immune system. However, for some children symptoms such as a cough, earache or constipation can become recurrent, persistent and worse. A weakened child can then become prone to further illness, resulting in a cycle of chronic health problems. Acupuncture can be particularly effective in this type of situation.
Teenage years are a classic time for imbalances to arise due to the rapid changes a body undergoes. This major transition is viewed as an opportunity from the perspective of acupuncture to finally address new and long standing imbalances that can surface at this time such as acne, migraines, anxiety and period pains, thereby supporting a young person through adolescence into healthy adulthood. For more information on how acupuncture may be able to help your child visit www.acupuncture southmanchester.net or call Balwant Kaur, an acupuncturist practising in south Manchester and Cheshire on 0161 865 4167.

Babies Is your baby living in a toxic environment? Part 1 By Joanna Parry
M
ANY of us try to be as green as we can when it comes to our babies. We dress them in organic cotton babygrows, buy natural sheepskins and some of us even use real nappies. But how green are we really? Recently there has been a spate of publicity about the potentially harmful toxins in baby toys, nursery furniture and cot mattresses, so how possible is it to reduce these toxins and truly ‘green’ your baby’s nursery? Raising an eco-friendly baby is not only safer for baby but also reduces the impact on the environment. Most of us already recycle, we try to reduce our carbon impact and are aware of wasteful packaging. We buy fair trade baby products wherever available and we choose organic, locally grown vegetables to reduce our baby’s exposure to toxins like mercury, lead, pesticides and
arsenic. And, whenever possible, we do our part to reduce air pollution and leave the car at home. But is this enough? “I already buy organic clothing,” says Alison. “I breastfeed my baby and I use real nappies. What more can I do?” The answer is, a lot more. The eco nursery Newborns can spend as much as 80% of the first part of their lives in their nursery, so it is important to make it as green and nontoxic as possible. In short, to create an eco nursery. The Nesting Project is a recent testing campaign that invited parents who had just decorated their babies’ rooms to put samplers in the nursery before sending them off for analysis. The results were surprising, even frightening: the lab picked up a number of pollutants including formaldehyde and other VOCs (substances emitted from everyday products and materials, including household chemicals, solvents, varnishes and paints)
arising from newly laid flooring or carpet, soft furnishings, clothing, bedding, textiles and toys. It went on to explain the harmful effects of VOCs, of which symptoms can include eye, nose, throat and skin irritation and allergic reactions, nausea, headaches, dizziness and respiratory problems. Knowing the exact extent to which the air in your newborn’s nursery is polluted may be more information than you want, or need, to know. But there is no need to panic. There are many ways to detox a nursery, particularly if you’re still at the renovation stage, and while some methods require more effort and cash, others are cheap and easy. • Floor: As a general rule a hard floor is best, although bamboo and cork are also eco-friendly options. If you do want carpet, choose one made with natural fibres such as organic wool or cotton and check that it has not been treated with unnecessary chemicals or glues.
Add natural wool rugs for softness and warmth. • Walls: Choose low - or no - VOC paint and natural pigments made from ingredients such as milk casein, clay, beeswax, and natural mineral dyes. Try www.earthbornpaints.co.uk for a wide range of colours. If you prefer wallpaper you can buy recycled or wood chip paper which is ‘breathable’ and doesn’t have a negative impact on air quality. Use products made from recycled and reclaimed materials to decorate nursery walls. Lead paint is an age old problem, and some older houses may still have lead paint on the walls or window sills. If you are concerned about this get the professionals in, as stripping lead paint can release toxins. • Curtains: Use natural materials such as wool, cotton, linen or silk. Wash and air the curtains before hanging them up as even natural fibres are treated with substances to make them moth resistant. • Electrical: Remove Wi-Fi, cordless phones, mobiles and

unborn child. Using the latest 4D ultrasound machines the scans generate real-time moving images and allow both parents to bond with the baby while still in the womb. Having first launched in 2004, Baby Premier has now grown to over 10 clinics across the UK (several based in the North West) with a further 10 more clinics being scheduled to open later this year. ‘4D Scans play a huge part in the bonding process for a couple and their families prior to the birth of their baby – especially for the father’, explains Ian Parker, Marketing Manager at Baby Premier. ‘Many fathers have often expressed that it makes everything that is happening feel much more real, as we can capture movements such as yawning, stretching, smiling, kicking and swallowing’. So the overall response from patients has

been a positive one, ‘people are generally amazed by the facial expressions and what they can see their baby doing whilst still in the womb’. ‘Mothers are usually very excited to be able to see the movements of their baby, which they are feeling at the same time, but are also often surprised by how much of their baby’s movement they aren’t aware of.’ In theory, you could simply wait until your baby is born to see what they will look like, but with prices starting at £95, you might not have to! The Stokke Sleepi wireless baby monitors from the baby’s room or better from the house altogether. Children are more susceptible to electromagnetic waves which can be very harmful to development, even leading to long-term illnesses and damage to the immune system. • Open the window and let the fresh air in. Also, reduce unwanted chemicals and pathogens the free and easy way by bringing plants into your nursery. Particularly effective plants that remove toxic chemicals from the air are areca palm, lady palm, rubber plant, dragon plant, English ivy, peace lily, gerbera daisy, snake plant, spider plant and weeping fig.
• If you're pregnant let someone else renovate! It doesn’t matter how green the products you are using are, it is still safer to keep away from them until the paint has dried. Don’t forget to think green about what you put inside your nursery, too. Families reader Amy said “I was careful about what I put on my nursery walls, but I never stopped to think about the furniture.” It’s true, most of us don’t. We assume anything and everything we buy for our nursery will naturally be safe. • Even cots can be green. Some conventionally-made cribs in manufactured wood products like hardwood plywood paneling, particleboard and mid-density fibreboard are sources of VOCs and harmful flame retardants. Solid wood treated with non-toxic varnish, oil or wax is best. Avoid chipboard wood (made using formaldehyde) or furniture plastic or a plastic coating as they may contain harmful softeners. A good example of an eco-crib is the
adaptable Stokke Sleepi baby crib that easily converts into a toddler bed. Available from www.kiddisave.co.uk from £514.49. • Mattress: Choose a mattress made from natural materials from suppliers such as www.abacaorganic.co.uk or www.thelittlegreensheep.co.uk Many conventional mattresses use PVC as the mattress cover and foam treated with potentially toxic flame retardants as filling material. A better option is a mattress made from natural coir (coconut husk), hemp, organic cotton, natural rubber latex or organic wool, which is naturally fire resistant. • Cot linen: It’s not just baby’s clothing that can be organic. Cot sheets, sleeping bags, blankets and towels are now available in 100% organic cotton. Don’t forget to wash all new linens before use. • Toys: Baby toys made from PVC plastic may contain phthalates, the suspected hormone-disruptors that have been linked to liver and kidney damage. Choose toys made of natural, non-toxic materials such as FSC wood, hemp and cotton, and check the manufacturer has used nontoxic dyes and natural oil finishes.

Christmas Gift Guide As always at Families Manchester, we like to champion local independent shops and with Christmas just around the corner, we can’t think of anywhere better to shout about than our local toyshops. So before you trudge off to that out of town toy warehouse or the supermarket to do your Christmas shopping, just have a look at what your local toyshop has to offer – we assure you, whatever your budget, you won’t be disappointed. And with most shops now having an online shop as well, you could even do it from the comfort of your own home. JUST to whet your appetite, here are some of the gorgeous things that a few of our favourite local toyshops have to offer for Christmas 2010. Traditional Toys at the Last Drop Gallery, located in Bolton’s lovely Last Drop Village has been run by John and Sue Hurst for over 30 years. They pride themselves on the service they give to customers and say nothing is too much trouble. They deal with all the top quality traditional toy suppliers and if they don’t have what you want in stock, then if it’s available, they’ll get it for you. They offer discounts to schools and playgroups upon request. You can shop in peace and quiet, take as long as you like and there’s even a teashop next door (if you need it after an exhausting shopping spree!), and acres of free parking. The star of the show this year is this fabulous Victorian Dolls’ House by Melissa & Doug. No
detail has been overlooked in the design of this easily assembled wooden dolls’ house, making it an heirloom to be cherished for years to come! The house costs £99.99 with ‘antique’ furniture sets at £19.99 per room. Traditional Toys at The Last Drop Gallery, The Last Drop Village, Bromley Cross, Bolton. 01204 593528 www.thelastdropgallery.co.uk Quite frankly you parents of Chorlton are spoilt, with not just one, but two fantastic toyshops on your doorstep. Monkey Puzzle Toys owners Nicola and Amanda wanted to bring a traditional toy shop with quality and quirkiness to Chorlton and that is just what they’ve done. Catering to kids of all ages they offer wooden and traditional toys, fun and unusual gifts and brilliant educational games. The shop is known as having a lively atmosphere with great advice and they are happy to play with the children whilst you browse. Customer service is a priority so whether you want to look at catalogues, to pre order specific items for Christmas, need a present gift wrapping or delivery anywhere in the UK, all bases are covered. Take to the skies with the International Air Show from Le Toy Van; a painted wooden air show set complete with vehicles plus an air traffic control tower and a fire engine and a fire station building! Finished in a colourful retro style with vintage style
detailing. At £47.99 from Monkey Puzzle Toys this is great value for such quality and design. Or how about lovely ‘Roseanne’ by Imajo, who is 37cm tall and one of a large family of beautiful multicultural Fair Trade rag dolls – all the way from Sri Lanka. Roseanne has gorgeous red hair, a lovely smiley, friendly face and comes wearing a pink dress with a co-ordinating green top. All the boy and girl dolls are traditional with no hint of bling and start from £8.99.
As a community co-operative, Busy Bee Toy Shop is jointly owned by over 100 residents of Chorlton, who are passionate about having a vibrant, fun and great value place for children locally. The toy shop opened in July 2009 in response to a genuine desire among Chorlton residents to support small independent businesses. They provide an imaginative range of toys and crafts that respond to the needs of children, their parents and carers. Well known brands such as Playmobil, LEGO and Sylvanian Families are available, along with books, games and pocket money toys. Keen to nurture links with the community, they also organise instore children’s activities and book readings, attend local festivals and visit schools and playgroups.
