NEWS
Charity Fundraising Day at Reddiford School Pupils from Reddiford Prep School dressed in the colours of the flag of India to raise awareness and money for Action Aid, SEWA (Selfless Efforts for the Welfare of All) and BAPS charities - who are providing life-saving equipment and supplies, temporary hospital beds, food, vaccines and support in response to the Covid pandemic ravaging India and surrounding countries. The importance of charity is at the heart of Reddiford’s ethos; from reception to Year 6, pupils are engaged with the world around them and are encouraged to nurture an understanding of the needs of others. The children were inspired by news reports of the devastating pandemic across South Asia. Our compassionate, enthusiastic pupils looked wonderful in their colourful clothes and once again showed how keen they are to support worthy causes both at home and abroad and raised an incredible £1586.80! Mrs. Batt (Head Teacher) stated, “we are very proud of our pupil’s achievements, their desire and determination to support these worthwhile charities and contribute to ongoing efforts to provide for those in need is highly commendable.”

Mattel launches new toy takeback programme Mattel PlayBack Discover your innerninja at the epic new Ninja Warrior UK Adventure Park, Watford NOW OPEN! Inspired by the hit ITV game show, the family-friendly indoor venue at Woodside Leisure Park features a mix of obstacles to climb, balance, jump and swing across, as well the famous Warped Wall. Wannabe Ninjas will need to preserve some extra energy to tackle the awesome inflatable course complete with big red bouncy balls, tunnels, battle zone and the ultimate airbag leap to race through.
The new programme is designed to recover and reuse materials from old Mattel toys for future Mattel products, and supports the company’s goal to achieve 100% recycled, recyclable or bio-based plastic materials across all products and packaging by 2030. To participate in the Mattel PlayBack programme, consumers can click here, print a free shipping label, and pack and mail their outgrown Mattel toys back to Mattel. The toys collected will be sorted and separated by material type and responsibly processed and recycled. For materials that cannot be repurposed as recycled content in new toys, Mattel PlayBack will either downcycle those materials or convert them from waste to energy. At launch, the programme will accept Barbie®, Matchbox® and MEGA® toys for recycling with other brands to be added in the future. Mattel PlayBack will initially be available in the United States and Canada. The programme will extend to France, Germany and the United Kingdom through third-party recycling partners.

Performing Arts prepares your child for the new school year The start of the school year is a great time to consider new activities for your child and the skills learnt in performing arts can be hugely beneficial to children. These include empathy, listening, problem solving and confidence. Empathy One challenge children face when they return to school in September is changes to friendship groups. Empathy is essential to help them react appropriately to their peers and develop their social skills. To portray a character in a play we need to be able to step into their shoes and understand their situation; if a child learns to understand a character in this way, they can apply this skill to everyday life. Boredom busters Rough and tumble. Play fighting is a great way to let off steam. Stuff some pillows up a pair of dad-size T-shirts to set up a ‘sumo wrestle.’ Make the rules of play fighting clear, otherwise the session might descend into chaos and tears. Eat a rainbow. Of course, we’re not talking about vegetables! Have fun with edible food colouring and let your kids paint and then eat rainbow toast. You could also make rainbow cake! Products at Cake Craft World. Free Get wild. Join the Summer Reading Challenge, Wild World Heroes, at your local library or online. Libraries have teamed up with WWF to create a nature-themed challenge. Go fly a kite! SUMMER LEARNING
Seven steps to a book-filled summer Start small. For reluctant readers, start with magazines, comics or graphic novels. Let them choose. Children need to feel they are in charge of selection – as long as it’s age-appropriate. Join the Summer Reading Challenge. Your child will need to read six or more books during the holidays. Rewards include stickers and small prizes. Audiobooks improve literacy skills and whet appetites for more stories. Summer Book Club. Encourage your child to start a Book Club with friends. Then host a playdate with snacks and chats about their
favourite/least favourite parts. Keep it handy. Wherever you go this summer make sure you have reading material to hand. Make it a routine. Try to schedule regular daily ‘downtime’ for reading. Pick up a book at the same time as your child, so you can be a reading role model.

How to get ahead over the summer holidays Did you know your child’s brain physically grows until they are approximately 18 years old? Like all developing parts of the body, it is important to keep it stimulated and stretched to help it reach full potential, even during the summer holidays. We (almost) all love the summer holidays and, as parents and carers, we are thrilled to see children having fun. What some of us might not be so keen on is all the knowledge from school melting away in the summer heat. This last year, more than ever, has left many feeling like they need to play catch up, or just consolidate what was gained in the past 12 months, which leaves a muchneeded summer break feeling like a double-edged sword. Many parents will be wanting to ensure that that any learning gaps that have arisen due to Covid-19 remote schooling, are filled efficiently and without a delay. So, what can we do?
challenge for many children this year. Some parents and students have worked particularly hard with teachers and tutors every week to ensure that children are reaching their full potential. Now is the time to reap the benefits of this hard work and get ahead for the upcoming academic year. Encourage an active imagination at home! Whilst tales of monsters under the bed may be a thing of the past, an active imagination is great for their schoolwork.
Play is not only fantastic fun, but Give them the head start they need it can also help develop their imagination, problem solving, and communication skills. Whether it It is true that doing nothing over be Lego, dolls, sword fighting with the summer holiday will cause your child to forget some of their valuable friends, or dress up, dance routines knowledge from the previous school and drama, these are all great year, however, keeping in touch with ways of encouraging your child’s imagination. Make thinking outside the box fun. Problem-solving in maths is a topic that many students struggle with. Why? It is a combination of comprehending the question, thinking of different strategies to address the question, and trial and error. It really demands an independent and engaged mind. How can you help your child develop this over the summer holidays? a) Introduce them to everyday problems This needs to be as daunting as it sounds. It might be talking through how to make a new recipe. What should we think of for safety? What will add extra flavour? What will happen if we don’t add that? Is there an alternative? Fun for the whole family and it will help them build strategic thinking too. Enjoy your time with family and friends!
