JUNE

Thanks to Jane Morland for this photo of her twin daughters, Lois & Dulcie.

Welcome Back…

The winner of the Smart Games competition in our last issue was Hannah Koopman. Congratulations to her and thank you to all who entered.

.... it’s soooo lovely to be welcoming you to our May/June issue. It’s a long winter when you live with energetic young children who share a penchant for loud cartoons and lashings of Lego. I’m sure I’m not the only one who finds that dark, rainy days cooped up inside feel like a losing battle, trying to hold back an avalanche of play dough and toy cars. In winter, I sometimes feel I spend my whole life frantically trawling room after room in search of a green ninja/Batman/Buzz Lightyear toy, while the three-year-old wails uncontrollably for it. And then, just when you’ve stepped on one Sticklebrick too many, gentle sunshine seeps in through the windows, and things are changed. Last June, we took a picnic and went to see an open air production of David Walliams’ Mr Stink in the grounds of Temple Newsam. It was magical, and we all loved it. The then two-year-old was singing the songs for weeks afterwards. Heartbreak Productions are back this year with an al fresco performance of Ratburger – check out the details on page 17. Outdoor theatre, picnics, bike rides, adventure – life feels full of possibilities when summer arrives. Lego obsessions subside as children can finally run free.

NEWS… CATH BRADLEY’S DAUGHTER HOLLY WITH HER HORSE

Walk of Art: CHAMPING at the BIT… Wild horses couldn’t stop the Horsforth Walk Of Art, which takes place on July 2 and 3. It’s an annual event, with artists exhibitions and hands on activities for children at various locations throughout the town. This year, the theme is horses, since the name Horsforth comes from Horse Ford. Event organiser Lara Rule said,“Local resident, Cath Bradley had the idea to create one symbol to be present across the event.

So Cath was encouraged to take her idea and run with it – which she absolutely has – it’s fantastic!” A small printable horse template has been created, which children can cut out and decorate to display during the event. You can print out one of your own at

www.horsesofhorsforth.wordpress.com. Spot as many Horses of Horsforth as you can, plus see a Yarn Bombed Caravan, Children’s Drive in Cinema and much more. Visit www.horsforth-woa.org for more information.

Creative Anna is an Inspiration

Play Area gets off the Ground

Creation Station’s Anna Quinn (pictured right) has been named one of the UK’s top inspirers by the company. Anna, who runs the Leeds and Bradford franchise of art and craft classes and events, was presented with the award at Creation Station’s annual conference. “I was absolutely delighted to receive the bronze pin award for inspiring over 1,000 children in 2015, through our classes, afterschool clubs, parties and events,” said Anna. “I’ve met some wonderful children and families and look forward to inspiring many more in 2016.” For more information, visit www.thecreationstation.co.uk or call 07746 886 116.

A mum from Burley-in-Wharfedale has launched a project to refurbish the village playground. Rachael Robinson wants to raise £70,000 to dramatically improve the children’s play area. She has been amazed at the community support that has flooded in for the campaign. She said,”The playground has had much the same equipment for the last 35 years. It’s old, dirty, slimy, the paint’s peeled off the once brightly coloured metal... it isn’t fit for purpose and is a hazard.” She and others are now organising a number of fundraising events to help reach their target. The LITTLE GYM leaps in… An exciting new children’s gym is limbering up for action in Leeds. The Little Gym has just opened its doors at Moor Allerton Centre (near Sainsbury’s) on Leeds Ring Road. It is a dedicated space, fully equipped for age-specific classes which help children to progress and gain skills in a fun and nurturing environment. Owner Kate Henebury opened The Little Gym in Harrogate six years ago. Her enthusiasm and passion, and that of her trained team of instructors, has made The Little Gym a huge success, and there are now more than 600 children attending its classes. It took a long time to find the right location in Leeds, but now Kate has found a space – 3,000 square foot of it to be precise, with vibrant and colourful purpose-built equipment, she can’t wait to welcome children and parents.

“We focus on children’s motor skills development, with movement analysis, and this goes hand in hand with encouraging social skills and confidence,” explained Kate. “We often incorporate numbers and letters in activities and there is lots of singing and music too. So our carefully planned programme, which caters for small classes and quite specific age groups, is really tailored to supporting and encouraging the individual child in all areas of development.” The Little Gym classes are for children aged from four months to 12 years. Tots aged up to three years can enjoy them with their parents, and from age three upwards they join in independently.

Calling All ASPIRING Young Writers! Is your child excellent with words? Do they like telling stories? Or do you want to encourage their creativity? Well it’s time for them to put pen to paper because the National Young Writers’ Awards have returned for the eighth year. Judged by best-selling author of the Charlie & Lola, Clarice Bean and Ruby Redfort books, Lauren Child, and organised by tuition provider Explore Learning, this year’s theme is ‘The Mash-Up’. Children are asked to write a 500 word story of a ‘mash-up’ of two genres whether it’s an alien landing his spaceship in Victorian England or a Disney princess as a zombie slayer, there is huge scope to let their imaginations run wild. The competition is free to enter and your child could win a fabulous family trip to Disneyland and £500 worth of books for their school. Open to children aged 14 and under, the closing date is June 7. Children can fill out an application form at their local Explore Learning Centre or enter online at www.explorelearning.co.uk/youngwriters. L

Parents can watch from a mezzanine floor with a glass viewing area. The Little Gym also provides parties. For more information, visit leeds.thelittle gym.eu or call 0113 3359915.

YEARS

MuM

Sarah Butters plans a magical birthday...

If you haven’t heard it already, our columnist Becky Bond has an amazing story to share...

You’d be forgiven for thinking that I’ve been in the parenting game for long enough to know not to ask stupid questions. It’s nearly 13 years since I became a Mum, but this cautionary tale shows that experience does not always bring good judgment. That’s why I asked my nine, soon to be 10-year-old what she wanted for her birthday. After the question tumbled from my mouth, I reflected that the likely answer was going to be impractical, unaffordable or illegal. But as nine (nearly 10) year olds do, she delivered the unexpected. Looking up from her Harry Potter book (but keeping her finger on the sentence she was reading) she simply said,“Surprise me.” Now some of you will think that a fabulous answer, but don’t be fooled. It doesn’t mean there are no wrong gifts. It simply means there are no easy gifts. A week on from the stupid question, Eliza wandered in to the kitchen and offered me a lifeline. “Mum. I’ve got an idea for my birthday.” Quick as a flash, I turned round and tuned in. “I’d like a sloth. A real one. That one we saw on holiday was so cute.” And then she was gone. Now I’ve done a bit of a research into the keeping of wild and endangered animals in domestic settings after last year’s request for a real penguin. It turns out it’s just not on. 12 months ago I was able to give a rational explanation as to why a Rockhopper would not like our home – it’s too hot and we don’t eat a lot of fish. The sloth issue is a little trickier as we already live with a human sloth – our resident tweenager. However, with some persuasion Eliza agreed that two sloths was one too many. My second chance came just a few days later when she piped up from the back of the car on the journey home from school. “I have a great idea for my birthday,” Eliza said. “And this time it’s not a real animal.” With the countdown to B day well and truly on, I asked rather too eagerly what she would like. “My own muppet. An Eliza muppet. One that walks and talks and stuff. It’s not a real animal so it’s not cruel.” After some Googling (yes, I really did Google it) I discovered that real muppets are harder to source than sloths. Or penguins. However I reflected that it must be magical to think that your Mum can make anything happen. I like to think these requests show that not only does Eliza believe that anything is possible, but that I am the person to make it possible. It doesn’t help magic up a muppet or russle up a Rockhopper but it does make being a Mum feel pretty special. With time running out I began to think that I would never find the perfect present. But as we sat watching one of the Harry Potter films (don’t know which one – she has to explain them all to me) she offered a final suggestion. “I tell you what would be a brilliant birthday surprise. Meeting JK Rowling. I bet she’s nice.” With my head in my hands I realised I was beaten. And then,“Or I tell you what would be the best present ever. You come to my Harry Potter party dressed as Hagrid.” And so that’s why I will be at Rudding Park’s cinema this Sunday dressed as a bearded giant, watching Eliza and her pals drink Pumpkin Juice and eat chocolate frogs. All because I asked my nine (soon to be 10) year old a stupid question – and because I love her.

Dad’s gone viral. Well, sort of. It was his funeral last month. He died peacefully, without pain, having lived a life full of love and fun. So it only seemed fitting that his final service, though emotional, ended with a bit of a giggle. The funeral director (rightly so), had assumed my dad would be transported from Bingley Parish Church to the crematorium in a hearse. But that was never going to happen. You see, dad had spent his working life selling plant machinery – diggers, generators and such like... And he’d always been fond of a good jape. We’d kept it secret, hoping the surprise element would lift the mood – and it did. As people streamed out of church, tears soon dried and laughter took over as they saw dad’s coffin, fully bedecked with flowers, being driven off in the bucket of a bright yellow dumper. He got a rapturous round of applause. Following with family in the car behind, we saw some classic double-takes. I don’t know what was more amusing, the slack-jawed teens or the guy at the bus stop who actually cleaned his glasses and put them back on again. Phones came out as people nudged each other and took selfies. But it wasn’t until I was recounting the tale at my writing group a few weeks later, that one of the members said,”Ah, yes, I read about that in the paper.” Then a girl at yoga told me the story was doing the rounds on facebook! He would have absolutely loved that. Brian (or Tufty, as dad was also affectionately known) was an eternal optimist and a doer. If he wasn’t playing golf or tennis, he’d be organising a ski trip or a big day out with his pals. So it’s in his spirit that I’m on a mission not to mope. I’m upset, obviously – but I’m also cracking on. I’ve booked a holiday for a start. I’ve got through a tonne of books I’ve been meaning to read. I’ve rustled up roast dinners Delia would be proud of, sorted the garden, painted the gate and said ’yes’ to all manner of activities I might ordinarily swerve. I even took myself off to see a lovely lady in the village who’s a bereavement counsellor. She does a good line in biscuits and practical advice. What Margaret can’t do for your mind in an hour is nobody’s business. Last weekend, though, I think dad may have been looking down with a frown. One thing he was never keen on was piercings. He believed it was a slippery slope to the tattoo shop. But it was Emma’s tenth birthday and I had no choice; “...You let Molly get her ears done when she was ten.” So, we sashayed on over to the beauticians – me with purse in hand (how much?) and Emma with bobble-tied hair, ready for the ear gun. She was very brave, barely flinching. Maybe they do it differently now, but when my sister Lu took me (thirty three years ago), I fainted. Still, I wasn’t as bad as my niece Jess, who wet herself. But the ten year old’s lobes are now suitably sparkly – and she’s thrilled. Another rite of passage ticked off the list. I’m sure dad would agree that in the grand scheme of things, a piercing battle is worth losing if long term, I can persuade my daughter not to get ’RIP Grandad’ tattooed on her backside...

PARTY TIME! Living the Theme ||Parties can go with a real swing||

By Sally J. Hall

||if you choose a theme that|| ||your little ones can have|| ||fun with.|| If you’re enlisting the help of a professional – like a venue or entertainer, talk to them about ideas. There are some fabulous providers offering a whole world of magical parties. Here are three in our area: Rascals Entertainment This award-winning Harrogate-based company offers children’s parties, character appearances and entertainers. The list of themes it provides is endless. To name a few, there’s Dance Matt Disco, five different Star Wars themes with the latest characters, Frozen, Popstar and Pamper, Minions, Transformers, Peppa Pig, Toy Story and Paw Patrol. Cookridge Hall Health and Fitness Children’s parties here include a pool party in its 20 metre pool with floats and games for the over sevens; Princesses, Superheroes, Mini Divas and Space Hoppy Mania – with all party games on space hoppers. Held in the lovely surroundings of Cookridge Hall, and led by a helpful and professional team, all themed parties include a party tea and party bag, plus complimentary use of the health club for the parents of the children attending the party. 8

Susie Sparkles Susie pay such attention to detail in the wide range of parties she provides. “At the moment I’m excitedly planning a Ruby Redfort party for a 10 year old girl,” said the party entertainer. “Ruby is the child genius heroine in a series of novels about a spy agency. I've already started writing letters to the birthday girl in code. I might be getting carried away but there’s nothing like a new theme to make Susie Sparkles a bit giddy!” Star Wars has proved popular for her too, so dressing up as Darth Vader has made a change from Frozen’s Elsa, and Susie, who is a trained dancer, has also done some Strictly Come Dancing parties recently. And if you’re going it alone, here are some great ideas for setting the theme… PIRATES Invitations: Create a treasure map with “X marks the party spot” and a pirate poem with plenty of “aaaaaahhhhhhhs!” Wear: Dress as a pirate and make eye patches to wear. Play: Fill a wooden chest with torn up newspaper and pop in some lucky dip gifts. Eat: Give them chicken, vegetable or fish fingers and let them eat with their hands and make jelly with pomegranate seeds in it to look like sunken treasure.

SUPERHERO Invitations: On Superhero coloured invitations, write: “Dear SuperZac, please come to my Superhero party.” Wear: Make simple masks for each child and a badge with their name and super power. You can also make capes from plastic tablecloths. Play: Create a super hero obstacle course from ropes, pop-up tunnels, boxes and cushions, then have a quiz about superhero powers. Eat: Add cake toppers with “Boom!” “Pow!” and “Zap!” on them to cupcakes. TEA PARTY Invitations: Make invitations festooned with flowers from wrapping paper and doilies. Wear: Make accessories such as fascinators or hats and bow ties. Play: This theme really suits all those old-fashioned party games like Pass the Parcel and Musical Chairs. Eat: Tea can be a traditional one with little sandwiches and dainty cakes. Look for cardboard tiered cake stands and use pretty cloths and bunting.

FREE Wheeling… It’s Coeliac Awareness Week from May 9 – 15, and Leeds mum Kate Hardie has kindly shared a recipe from her book, Can I Eat It? Which is full of glutenfree ideas for children. She wrote it after her son William was diagnosed with Coeliac, a lifelong autoimmune disease caused by a reaction to gluten. Pre-heat the oven to 200°C / Fan 180°C / 400°F / Gas 6

IIA FUN FREE-FROM RE

CIPEII

INGREDIENTS:

• 200g / 7oz ready roll gluten-free puff pastry, (life is too short!) • 1 dessert spoon olive oil • ½ small onion, finely diced • 1 teaspoon soft brown sugar • 1 garlic clove, minced • 200g / 7fl oz passata • 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar • 8 basil leaves, roughly chopped • 50g / 2oz mozzarella • 4 slices Prosciutto, roughly chopped • 1 medium egg, beaten • 7 wooden skewers, cut in half

PIZZA PINWHEELS These are great for parties, school lunch boxes or a quick snack after school. They work well served either hot or cold making the perfect accompaniment for a wide range of occasions. You could also experiment with different fillings such as chorizo, smoked bacon and mushroom or cream cheese and chive too. Makes: Approx 14, (5cm / 2”) diameter. METHOD: 1. Lightly grease a large baking tray and place on one side. 2. Pour the olive oil into a medium sized pan and add the onion. Sauté for 5 minutes, then add the brown sugar and continue to sauté for a further 2 minutes until the onion starts to caramelise. Next add the garlic, passata, balsamic vinegar and basil, then continue to cook for a further 5 minutes. Place on one side to cool a little. 3. Meanwhile, roll out the gluten-free puff pastry until approximately 2mm thick, then carefully distribute the tomato mixture all over the pastry, edge to edge. 4. Place small pieces of the mozzarella and Prosciutto all over the tomato topping, then carefully roll up the dough to form a swiss roll shape. Wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 10 minutes. This will enable you to cut the pinwheels out more easily. 5. Remove from the fridge and slice into 1½cm thick disks. Lay on the baking tray, ensuring there is room to expand a little. Glaze with the beaten egg and place in the centre of the oven for 15 minutes. 6. Remove from the oven and allow to cool on a wire rack. Store in an airtight storage box until ready to assemble, then carefully insert a wooden skewer into each pinwheel. For more useful information and recipes, visit Kate’s website, www.happyigloo.com, follow @happyigloo or visit the Happy Igloo Facebook page.

Anaphylaxis – You’re not alone… Discovering that your child has a severe allergy is worrying, to say the least. The world can seem like a frightening place, which may be isolating for families. Now, for the parents of children at risk of severe allergic reaction, known as anaphylaxis, there is a new support group in Leeds to help share experiences and advice, and talk about fears and anxieties. Relaxed and friendly meetings are held at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm – with the next one taking place on May 21. The group is organised by Helen Underwood (pictured above), of Underwood Training, which provides tailor-made First Aid training. Helen herself has allergies to peanuts and treenuts, and has recently become a mum to Rebecca, who will be one year old in September. “We set up the group because there’s a real need,” explained Helen. “It can often take a long time to get an appointment with an allergy specialist and to get an allergy plan in place. Families want help, advice, and simply to talk to others with similar concerns and experiences.” Helen added,“I happen to have worked as a paediatric physiotherapist, and I happen to teach first aid, but it’s not because of my medical background that I am doing this. I have first-hand experience of living with anaphylaxis and we are waiting to see 12

whether Rebecca will be affected by severe allergies. It seemed surprising that there wasn’t a support group in Leeds and it made sense to fulfil that need.” With the summer holiday approaching, the meeting in May will focus on how to prepare well for a trip away, travelling safely and eating out. The meeting, which is open to families with children who have allergies and their siblings, is on Saturday, May 21 at Meanwood Valley Urban Farm from 10.30am to 12.30pm. It is free to attend but places are limited so booking is essential. To find out more and book your place now, call Debbie at Anaphylaxis Campaign on 01252 546 100 or email Debbie@anaphylaxis.org. To get in touch with Helen for more local information, email anasupleeds@gmail.com. The meeting will be held in a room within the farm’s entrance. Drink refreshments will be provided.

The Sandwich Generation Many parents of young children, balancing careers and often caring for their own parents or older relatives, feel very much a part of the sandwich generation. For those spending so much time caring for others, it is easy to overlook their own planning. HELEN GOTT is Head of the Wills and Probate Department at Emsleys Solicitors. She says it is important to address the legal issues which can arise with older relatives and to make sure that you also have documents in place to protect you. Here, she offers a few simple tips for families to consider… WILLS Does everyone in the family have Wills in place? Parents might have Wills but they might need updating if their circumstances have changed or their health has declined. Wills can also be used to ensure assets are passed to future generations.

Many parents of young children don’t have Wills either. Wills are essential to nominate people to look after your children and to look after your assets on their behalf. Wills also allow you to put in place planning for disabled children. LASTING POWERS OF ATTORNEY (LPAS) These are documents you can sign appointing others to make decisions regarding your financial affairs or healthcare decisions on your behalf. LPAs are essential documents for all clients but become particularly relevant for older relatives who might be struggling to make decisions in these areas.

You can decide who will be authorised to make decisions on your behalf (called Attorneys), should you require help in the future. Attorneys can be a partner, siblings, friends or professionals and must be people you trust to act in your best interests. Once appointed, Attorneys have legal authority to act on your behalf, even in the event you become mentally incapable in the future. Usually, LPAs are used for elderly relatives who need care and cannot administer their financial affairs or make decisions regarding their healthcare and treatment. However, there is no right time to put the documents in place and it is preferable to do so before someone starts to struggle to make decisions. WHAT IF YOU HAVE LEFT IT TOO LATE TO TALK TO OLDER FAMILY MEMBERS? If someone is no longer able to sign legal documents, it is possible to apply to Court to take control over their financial affairs. This is more restricted than putting LPAs in place so it is important to try and plan before relatives become mentally incapacitated. As always, good advice from a suitably qualified solicitor will help navigate these points.

For both babies and children bites and stings can be painful, irritating and alarming. In the majority of cases they are not dangerous and don’t cause lasting problems. However, in some instances bites and stings may require treatment due to infection and may even trigger an allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) that can be serious or fatal. TREATMENT: 1. Ensure that you put on disposable gloves. 2. Reassure the baby or child. 3. Remove the cause (keep the insect or note what it is).

LUXURY mini BREAK: a whole new meaning

Trave l

IIClaire and Tom Bottomley visited The Elms Hotel in Worcestershire with their two children,II IIMax, seven, and Ben, three. It is part of a boutique chain called Luxury Family Hotels,II IIand as they discovered, it does exactly what it says on the tin…II HE WORDS ‘luxury’ and ‘family’ don’t often sit side-by-side when it comes to holidays and breaks away. For parents, spa treatments, cream teas, cocktails and grown-up dinners in elegant surroundings are usually a distant memory, or hard-won treats involving highly co-ordinated childcare. But that’s where The Elms in Worcestershire is totally different. It’s one of a small chain of Luxury Family Hotels designed to let parents relax, and let children be children. On our first full day, we were more than happy to stay within the hotel and its grounds, which are beautiful. Inside the Queen Anne style country house, plush chairs and sofas are buffeted with chests of children’s toys and cupboards full of board games. Outside, among the hedge tunnels and fountains there are woven a playground, trampoline, fairy trail and abundance of outdoor toys. Each child gets two free hours of childcare at the Ofsted registered Bears Den crèche each day, and both our three and seven-year-old really enjoyed their time there between 10am and 12noon. Meanwhile, adults can head to the spa. After lunch, we made some nature pictures with the help of Kate from the Bear’s Den team, then to the tennis court for a family game of doubles, followed by a swim in the pool, which includes an in and outdoor Jacuzzi.

T

COMPETITION:

High tea is served for children in the spa cafe, with portions tailored to their specific ages. Ben loved his hidden vegetable spaghetti bolognaise and fruit crumble, and it was a big thumbs up from Max for his fish goujons, chips and peas, followed by banana split. Later on, parents can use either a baby listening or babysitting service while they go down to the restaurant for a bit of grown-up time. If you would rather all eat together, this is an option too. On day two we visited the West Midlands Safari Park, which was an amazing experience – we even saw a baby Rhino. Back at the hotel we completed the fairy trail with the help of Kate, and then a last swim before evening fell. Over breakfast before we left, Max asked: When are we coming back? To which we both replied: As soon as we possibly can... How to Book… For more information on The Elms and other Luxury Family Hotels, visit www.luxuryfamilyhotels.co.uk or telephone its central reservations team on 0844 482 2152. Orchard Toys launch great new ranges for holidays.

We’re big fans of Orchard Toys, so we were delighted to hear it has launched two new ranges which are perfect for journeys and holidays. There’s a fun range of six colouring activity books for different ages, which our testers have loved. Seven-year-old Max has been busily doing word searches and crosswords in Things To Do, and three-year-old Ben has found the big stickers in the Animals book very manageable. Designed with education in mind, it’s a great way of keeping their literacy up while school’s out. There is also a new range of mini games, perfect for home and on the go. Based on traditional family favourites, with a fun Orchard Toys twist, they include Dinosaur Dominoes, Crocodile Snap and Penguin Pairs. We have two copies of the Things To Do activity book to give away. To be in with a chance to win, email editor@ familiesleeds.co.uk with the word ORCHARD in the title by May 31. 15

UCKILY, furniture is in Karen’s blood. The mum of two from Cookridge grew up in a family business of upholstery and French polishing, and then did a degree in furniture design before working in the industry herself. “When I had my first child I thought it was never going to work going back to work so instead I started helping Dad out doing some sewing in the garage for extra cash,” explained Karen. “I gradually became more involved and spent more and more time in the workshop learning the skills. At the same time I was decorating my little girl’s room and got the idea that it would be good to do something a bit more fun for her headboard. But there was nothing like that out there, the options were just blue or pink padded rectangles.” And so an idea for a business – Karen’s Headboads, was born. “When I first showed the designs to Dad, who has 38 years experience upholstering, he thought I was mad. But I pushed to get the shapes and designs I wanted and his experience helped me achieve some of the more tricky areas. I taught him a few things along the way too.” Karen now makes the headboards in the family workshop, sometimes getting her Dad in to help when it’s busy, to get orders out in time. “I’m so excited to make them available to everyone who wants to make their children’s bedrooms fun and personal to them,” Karen said.
