Family art workshop, The Tetley

Contents…

Hello & Welcome Back As you can see, we’ve been getting arty. This picture shows me with my children at a fantastic family workshop at The Tetley. Artist Anne-Marie Atkinson helped the boys create some edible art. They daubed slices of bread with food colouring, then toasted and ate it. Painting, then toast. What’s not to like? Find out more about the amazing galleries, exhibitions, activities and events out there in our art feature on pages 8 and 9. Guaranteed to get children buzzing with creativity. And talking of buzzing, Leeds is a veritable hive of activity in July and August, as our What’s On listing is testament. Yes, there’s plenty to keep the children entertained, and hopefully there’ll be a spot of rest and relaxation for all of us busy worker bee parents along the way too! Enjoy your summer.

NEWS…

HORSFORTH DAD referees FA CUP FINAL Going to see their dad at work recently was something pretty special for four Horsforth children. Premiership football referee Jon Moss was chosen to take charge of this year’s FA Cup final between Arsenal and Aston Villa. Jon’s wife Julie, a teacher at Featherbank Primary School in Horsforth, and four children Madelaine, 16, Joe, 14, who both attend Horsforth School and Josh, nine, and Noah, seven, who both attend Featherbank Primary School, had VIP seats. All the boys are football mad and Joe has recently started to referee. Joe said,“I felt really proud watching my dad refereeing the FA cup final at Wembley. It was inspiring because I want to follow in his footsteps.”

SMALL HANDS: fun in the kitchen

Helping SMALL HANDS A mum of two who has campaigned nationally about school meals has launched her own cookery school for children in Leeds. Michelle Batty worked for the Children’s Food Trust, encouraging children to eat school meals and educating children and parents on healthy meals and cooking. Now Michelle runs Small Hands Can Cook, which specialises in fun and educational cookery classes, children’s parties and school holiday sessions. This summer, Small Hands Can Cook will be part of a holiday club at Bronte House school and a series of fun themed cooking and craft events in Otley, with plans for more in the neighbouring areas soon. Michelle said,“Our classes use healthy ingredients and help children take ownership of what they eat and remove poor associations with food. Parents at our parties have been overwhelmed. For more information, find Small Hands Can Cook on Facebook and Twitter or email hello@smallhandscancook.com

OH LA LA – a New Language Class for Leeds‌ Two Leeds mums with a passion for languages are offering French and Spanish classes with a difference. Amy Balding and Kate Lucas have set up Smartypants, aimed at children aged between three and 11, enabling them to learn another language in a fun and engaging way using games, song, role play and more. “Every child should have the opportunity to learn a language during their early years, when they have the ability to absorb so much, so quickly,â€? said Amy. “Smartypants is built on this belief. We want to share our passion for languages with all young people and see them learn and explore new ways to communicate and understand different ways of life.â€? YEARS

Sarah Butters reminisces about the more stressful aspects of holidaying with young children. But there’s reassuring news on times ahead… Holidaying with children is hard work. If you’ve done it, I’m not telling you anything you don’t know. The younger the child, the harder work your holiday will be. Forget kicking back and relaxing with the latest Jilly Cooper. You are about to become a part-time lifeguard and fulltime worrier. And that’s after you’ve made it through customs with a couple of kilos of suspicious looking powder – courtesy of SMA – in your luggage. I remember travelling to Spain when Eliza, my youngest, was five months old. I thought I’d lost my baby weight (I hadn’t) and had opted for a pair of deeply unflattering white linen trousers. To maximize my size, I’d teamed it up with a white floaty shirt. Eliza was a little unsettled on take off and so I decided to feed her a bottle of milk. She fell silent, until I removed the bottle and the screaming began again. I decided that the best course of action was to feed her for the entire two-and-a-half hour journey. By the time we reached Spanish airspace, the poor thing was about to burst. And she did. From both ends. All over me. On the plus side, everyone kept their distance at baggage reclaim and we were ushered to the front of the car hire queue but we concluded that holidaying was never going to be the same again. In the years that have followed I’ve worked on the theory that if 70 per cent of your holiday is enjoyable, that’s a result. The remaining 30 per cent will be a cocktail of sleepless nights, sun burn, ear infections, tummy bugs, sibling scraps and up too late tantrums. But I bring you some good news. As you approach the teenage years, I think things begin to get better. The odds begin to move in your favour. Gone is the anxiety about whether they’ll eat Spanish pizza or be able to sleep without the 47 teddy bears they have in their room at home. We’re now eating tapas together and enjoying it. Gone is that meerkat-like dance you see many parents do at the side of the pool as you decide whether your child is going to suddenly walk into the deep end, without armbands. Now the girls are packing up and heading to the pool on their own. Gone is the post lunch 10 mile pram push to get an hour of poolside peace. Now, I’m the one who needs an early afternoon nap! I know there are some tough times ahead – battles about boys, nights out and revision – but for now I’m enjoying holidaying with my children. So pass the factor 30 and the latest Jilly Cooper!

Our dad columnist Mike Smith finds that sometimes, with children, it’s all in a look... To mis-quote Oscar Wilde – there is only one thing worse than your child looking at you, and that is your child not looking at you. That was certainly true for us in the early days, when we’d have to make it clear that crimes like biting a sibling were Not Acceptable. We’d sit the offender down and repeat ‘look at me’ over and over again until they eventually gave in. Which for some reason always seemed to take a long time. Then we’d hold eye contact while making our displeasure known. They’d look back at us with humour, anger, sadness, defiance and utter incomprehension – every emotion you can think of. But there’s another expression they had that can’t be easily summed up. I’ll just call it The Look. Sometimes we’d get it directly and sometimes, far more painfully, it would be thrown at us over their shoulders. We’d see it when they had to do something that they didn’t feel ready for, but backing out wasn’t an option. Their first days at school were the worst. When we let go of their hands as they walked into their classrooms, their faces wore a mixture of sadness, bewilderment, rejection and even a trace of anger. That was The Look. Not a word was said, but the unspoken question hung heavily in the air. I walked silently out of the school gates, trying to ignore the sudden urge to blow my nose. Of course, as the boys have grown, they’ve become more used to new experiences, and The Look rarely puts in an appearance these days. I’d almost forgotten about it until a few weeks ago. Big Brother’s been doing cycle training at a local club for some time now, and is becoming very proficient. The triumphant expression on his face when he beat everyone else under the limbo bar is something I still treasure. But in the early days, The Look was never very far away. The first time I left him on his own, I had to sneak away while his attention was distracted to avoid getting The Look, even though I was only going to the shop round the corner. Nowadays, I just drop him off and collect him later. His confidence has steadily built up, and he’s got an expanding circle of friends at the club. He hasn’t given me The Look for some time, but we still hug and say goodbye. But that all changed the other week. We’d cycled down to the club as normal, chatting about this and that, while I worked on building up his awareness of traffic speeds and the rules of the road. As we rode in, his friends all called to him, and he was instantly swept away into his own world. He dumped his bag, thrust his book at the instructor and sped off to join his mates without a backward glance. There was no trace of The Look on his face now. But I’d be lying if I said there wasn’t on mine.

HALL OF MIRRORS: part of Folly! at Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal (Picture: Jonty Wilde)

2. Fountains Abbey & Studley Royal WHAT: This summer, the follies of Studley Royal water garden have been brought to life through the vision and creativity of three artists and designers. WHERE: Fountains, Ripon, North Yorkshire. WHAT’S ON: Internationally renowned theatre designer Gary McCann, world class art director, curator and designer Simon Costin and artist, curator and academic Irene Brown have transformed the Banqueting House, the Temple of Fame, the Octagon Tower and the Temple of Piety in innovative new artworks. On a visit to Studley Royal, you can pick up a mini guide or use a marvellously magical family map to explore the transformed follies. During the school summer holidays, there are daily art activity sessions from 11am – 4pm, where children can design their very own mystical folly art work.

3. Leeds Art Gallery

WHAT: One way to indulge the kids’ creativity this summer – and enjoy a cup of tea and a piece of cake while you’re at it – is to visit a pottery cafe. WHERE: Firefly Pottery, Town Street, Horsforth. Jackrabbits Pottery, Roundhay Road. WHAT’S ON: Both are creative hubs at the heart of their communities. Relax, have fun and get creative. All ages are welcome with a great range of child friendly services. And whatever you are doing, staff are on hand to give guidance. Claire Booth from Jackrabbits said, “We believe it’s imperative we allow and encourage our children to flourish in creative activities. Developing not only artistic, but intra-personal skills such as creative thinking and vision, the ability to focus, building confidence and, as is so often lacking elsewhere, the enjoyment of process, as well as outcome.” Victoria Iball from Firefly agrees. “I want people to experiment. Kids can worry that something’s got to be ‘good’ or ‘not good’,” she said. “I don’t want them to be thinking that, I want them to have fun and experience the creative process, because that’s the more important thing, throwing yourself into something.” At both Jackrabbits and Firefly there are the tools, materials, expertise and support for infinite creative possibilities. At Firefly, you can have a Play with Clay, as well as painting ready-fired objects and other crafts, and at Jackrabbits, you can now make castings of hands and feet – creating a unique and very personal sculpture.

WHAT: The collection of 20th century British Art at Leeds Art Gallery is recognised by the British government as a collection of national importance. Its collection also includes 19th-century and earlier art works. WHERE: The Headrow, Leeds City Centre. WHAT’S ON: There’s a drop-in family activity going on every day from 10am to 4.15pm in the Artspace, a fun, relaxed space, with changing materials and ideas inspired by the gallery’s artists and artworks for all ages to enjoy. Themed holiday projects, often with artists in residence, offer new ways of doing things. There’s also the Tiled Hall Café, and the Brew bar for that obligatory tea and treat.

Health

Prepare before

YOU TRAVEL With the summer holidays fast approaching, it’s important to plan ahead when travelling with babies and children, and prepare for the chance they might be unwell on the journey or whilst on holiday. Our resident doctor, Georgina Hudson, has some advice... n It sounds obvious, but the climate of where you are travelling to needs to be taken into consideration and appropriate clothing taken. n Ideally adequate sun protection creams should be bought prior to travel, making sure not to use expired lotions. Insect repellent spray should be used whilst away and it’s useful to pack antiseptic creams should any bites become infected. n In warmer climates always monitor that your child is drinking enough. n If travelling further afield always check with your GP surgery if any further vaccinations are needed for your child and yourself and if any prophylactic medicines are needed prior to travel; for example if travelling to an area where malaria is a risk. n From the medicine cabinet at home, it’s advisable to take Calpol, Piriton (to treat allergies) and Diorlyte sachets (to use if your child develops diarrhoea and vomiting) along with any regular prescribed medication your child usually takes.

10

n Before travelling check your travel insurance covers the whole family. It is also useful to apply online for a EH1C card (European Health Insurance Card), which can be used for emergency treatment if necessary abroad. These can be applied for online at www.ehicuk.net for all the family. n Before travelling abroad on holiday it is useful to look up how to seek emergency services or general medical advice for the country you are travelling to, which varies from country to country. If traveling with a tour company their local representatives will have this information, or reception staff at the accommodation you are staying in. If travelling independently it would be useful to have this information beforehand, should you need medical advice whilst you are away from home. n If your child becomes unwell or injures themselves whilst on holiday it is just as important to seek medical advice. If the above steps are taken before you travel, hopefully accessing medical care when on holiday will be straightforward.

ST GEMMA’S HOSPICE‌ Helping when youngsters need it the most

Nicole and Ieesha

What happens when a child looses a parent? It’s something none of us want to think about, but when it does happen, there are people here in Leeds who provide a vital support service... Meet Ieesha, six, and her half-sister, 23-year-old Nicole. Very sadly, their mum died in March after a long battle with breast cancer. “Sometimes I feel happy, the sun is shining and Ieesha and I are having fun and then I feel guilty and think, my mum has just passed away, I shouldn’t be like this, says Nicole. Grief is hard for anyone to deal with, but for young people like Nicole and Ieesha, it can be isolating, confusing and overwhelming. That’s why St Gemma’s Hospice’s Young People’s Service, which is partly funded by Children in Need, is such a lifeline. St Gemma’s Hospice in Leeds is the largest hospice in Yorkshire and one of the largest in England. It provides the best possible care and quality of life for local people with cancer and other life threatening illnesses. As well as providing care and support to patients, there’s support for the whole family. Nicole said,“I come every Ieesha with week for counselling and Jacqui Ieesha sees someone every week in school, and has sessions during the holidays and also comes to some of the activities. They are always here, we can come when we like, anything we need they help us – whether that’s a cuddle or cheese on toast! The Young People’s Service offers peer support through children and young people’s days, support meetings and also through personal counselling. This kind of support can really make a difference to children’s emotional health and well-being, for instance children can be supported to feel less angry about the situation they have found themselves in. Jacqui, one of the workers at St Gemma’s, explained how vital the service is. “It’s really encouraging to see young people mix together in an environment where they do not have to explain their sadness. We have children who are bereaved alongside young people who may have a close relative who is terminally ill. They have an opportunity to have fun in a safe space, knowing that they will be supported if they are upset.

And, of course, the outdoor environment offers more space than indoors. “That is why it is particularly important to those children who learn best through active movement, Debby added. “For many children, playing outdoors at our early years settings may be the only opportunity they have to play safely and freely while they learn to assess risk and develop the skills to manage new situations. At Cliffe House Horsforth Featherbank, outdoor activities include a home made Bug Hotel, which encourages the insect community into the garden so that the children can learn about pollination and insect life, as well as a mud kitchen, a log balance trail, a water spout and play table and a gazebo for sheltered outdoor picnics, reading stories and singing. Beyond the early years, events organised by the National Trust, such as pond dipping and geocaching, can be great. There are regular events like this, with equipment provided, at Fountains Abbey near Ripon. And for older children and the wider family, a Leeds organisation called Incredible Edible Kirkstall is doing much to boost opportunities for outdoor learning.

But it’s not just our instincts and observations telling us that outdoor play and learning are good for youngsters. According to Stephanie Hilborne OBE, chief executive of The Wildlife Trusts,“Children in 2015 are spending half as much time outdoors as they were a generation ago and it cannot be unrelated that one in ten children suffer from depression. Society is starting to realise the risks that this separation from our natural environment poses to our children’s health and happiness. So how can we maximise children’s opportunities for outdoor learning and play? For many young children, it’s a key part of their early years education. It’s something parents look out for when choosing a nursery, and which they find very much apparent at all Cliffe House Day Nurseries, which has settings in Baildon, Burley-inWharfedale, Bramhope, Featherbank and Trinity University, both of which are in Horsforth. “Freedom and movement, and promoting a sense of well-being is extremely important to us, explained Sarah Johnstone, the nursery manager at Cliffe House Baildon. “The children use our bikes and trikes around the track area and play in the fort, have fun sliding down the slide. The nurseries’ outdoor play areas are planned very carefully to fully utilise all the available space with lots of different areas of play and learning. “It gives them contact with the natural world and offers them experiences that are unique to outdoors, such as direct contact with the weather and the seasons, explained manager of Cliffe House Horsforth Featherbank Debby Thackray. “Outdoor play also supports children’s problem-solving skills and nurtures their creativity, as well as providing rich opportunities for their developing imagination, inventiveness and resourcefulness.

“It gives them contact with the natural world and offers them experiences that are unique to outdoors.” Debby Thackray, Cliffe House.

It’s a not-for-profit community organisation, which creates communal growing space and educational facilities and opportunities for all to enjoy. It is run by volunteers and founded by Kirkstall resident Paul Long. “It was my daughter who first inspired me to do this,” Paul explained. “The younger generation is becoming so far detached from the natural environment. With increasing health problems due to poor diet and exercise, I wanted to teach her about where her food comes from, encourage outdoor play, a Pond dipping at Fountains Abbey, (Photo NTPL) sustainable active lifestyle and give her real life skills and opportunities.” One of the great ways the group inspires residents is to run competitions like Grow The Tallest Sunflower or Largest Pumpkin, and Paint a Virgin Media Box. It also runs educational workshops including using recycled materials to create vertical planters, creative writing and runs Grow Your Own stalls at local events, to raise awareness and fund its projects. Paul added,“Everybody eats, and this is one way of helping to bring communities closer together, improve health and wellbeing and reduce social isolation. It is truly inspiring to see people gain confidence, self esteem and a sense of pride and achievement when they grow their own and share it with their friends, especially the younger members.” Incredible Edible is now aiming to expand its school garden initiative, to provide every child with their own square foot garden to use as an educational tool and inspire social sustainable healthy living. HIS SUMMER, the Froebelian School opens its new nursery. Based in a purposely-renovated site on New Road Side in Horsforth, it is open to all children aged from three months to five years old. Early years expert Rachel Burton has joined the school as head of the nursery. Rachel has a BA honours degree in Education and Theology with qualified teacher status. She has worked in early years for nearly 20 years, including as an Early Years Ofsted Inspector in her last post. Rachel established her own successful nursery in Huddersfield, where she developed her passion for outdoor play and tailoring learning to each individual child’s needs. “Our aim is to provide the highest quality, nurturing childcare for young children,” said Rachel. “The nursery has a distinct educational ethos that builds and extends all capabilities for each child, enabling them to make a flying start to their future.” She added,“Our staff are hand-picked for their passion and experience in early years and our equipment and resources are purposely designed with advice from renowned early years specialists to enable all children to unlock their full potential.” First Steps Nursery at Froebelian will have close links with the Froebelian School. Children attending the nursery will have preferential entry at age three to the main school, and the Froebelian goals of nurturing children to help them become rounded individuals and allowing them to fulfill their potential will be mirrored at the nursery. “At First Steps, children can learn, play and develop to their full potential whilst having fun,” said Rachel. “We concentrate on children learning at their own pace while we monitor and evaluate learning and development to ensure they build their confidence, setting them up for life beyond nursery.” Everything at First Steps has been designed with children at its heart. The building has been completely redeveloped with interiors and equipment designed and chosen with advice from early years specialists. Meals are designed specifically to meet the needs of children under the age of five years, and as well as the nursery premises, children will be able to make use of the grounds of the main school, which is just a short walk away. These secure grounds Getting creative allow for supervised outdoor activities and use of facilities, including a new nature area. The nursery offers full day, morning or afternoon sessions from 7.30am to 6pm and is open 51 weeks of the year, from Monday to Friday.

Welcome to

THE NURTURY When Helen Gration swapped newsrooms for nurseries, she never looked back.

T

HE former broadcaster runs two highly regarded nurseries in York, established in 2007, and now she is opening a third, the Montessori Nurtury at Moortown, on Shadwell Lane, here in Leeds. Helen, who is married to BBC Look North presenter Harry Gration, is clearly passionate about early years education, a passion that was triggered by the birth of their twin sons, Harrison and Harvey. “I soon realised that I was on a voyage of discovery Helen Gration as much as they were, and I wanted the very best for them,” she said. “I saw how important it was for them to copy those around them and to find a place in this world. I wanted to do justice to that quest, and the Montessori ethos does just that.” The more than 100-year-old Montessori method of education Helen has adopted in her nurseries allows children to explore learning from their perspective in an environment filled with items that matter to them and their development. Helen said,“We are here to inspire each and every child who comes to us, in a unique place that speaks to each individual, makes them comfortable, and cares for them truly. Here, they are busily involved enjoying the processes of learning and exploring their world, safe in the attentive and loving care of our staff. Our nurseries are a home from home, full of friends, fun and mindboggling activities!” The new Montessori Nurtury is next door to Moortown Primary School, The Montessori way: and will be offering an out-of-school club, as well as a holiday club for August. at the Nurtury, Moortown Helen added,“We have heavily invested in our staff, in the beautiful setting indoors and outdoors, and in the finest of resources, activities and food. In a world full of busy routines and multiple choices, it is important that the care for your child speaks from the heart, and here at our new nursery, we make sure that is our priority.” For more information visit www.yorkshiremontessorinursery.co.uk. Rainy Days

RAIN RAIN, don’t go away! One thing you can count on this summer is that there will be rain. When the heavens do open, you’ll need some ideas to keep your little ones occupied and you on the right side of sanity this summer. Sarah Butters offers her favourite ways to fill a wet summer day.

IIGet BOARD!II Whether you’re a Jedi at Jenga or a master Monopoly player, there’s nothing like a giant board games tournament to pass the time. No one in the Butters household will ever forget the day a game of Battleships descended into an actual World War. And if I’m to be honest, I’ve never quite got over being beaten by my children at Scrabble after they came up with ‘zumba’ on a triple word score. However this is a chance to encourage your family to forget the iPads and X Boxes of today and remember the fun you can have with three dimensional people.

IIFind some SNOW...II Yes, if precipitation is the order of the day, fight fire with fire, or rather rain with snow, and head to the indoor ski slope Snozone in Castleford. In summer, the slopes are quieter, the snow better quality and there are special offers on family lessons and family sledging passes. www.snozoneuk.com

IIHead INDOORS...II

National Media Museum

IIKeep learning ALIVEII Six weeks is a long time to be out of the classroom. Make a note of the days your local after school support centre is running holiday sessions. For example, Explore Learning is open daily over the school holidays and offers a range of learning opportunities for children from four years old. Keeping them occupied on a rainy day during the summer may give your child a head start once they’re back at their desk in September. www.explorelearning.co.uk

IICreate a rainy day JARII Has your child ever asked to do something that you’ve not had the time for? Maybe it’s baking a batch of biscuits, building some Lego they’ve had since their birthday or showing you a dance routine they’ve created. Whenever time is against you, get your child to Thackray Medical Museum write the idea on a piece of paper and pop it in the Rainy Day Jar. It means you can reach into it for ideas as soon as you hear the words ‘’It’s raining!”

Your local museum is rain proof and packed with family activities to keep you all occupied. There are workshops and activities on every day throughout the summer holidays at the National Media Museum in Bradford. Suitable for the over fives, they include experimenting with light and colour, creating cameraless photographs and making shadow puppets, plus an interactive storytelling session. For more information, visit www.nationalmediamuseum.org.uk. Or, at the Thackray Medical Museum, take a trip back to 1842 and walk down the dirty streets of Victorian Leeds. Surrounded by the smells and sounds of Victorian life, you will follow the lives of the characters who live amongst the rats and bedbugs. Enter an operating theatre in 1842 and experience first-hand the horror of Victorian surgery or explore your body and how it works in the interactive Life Zone Gallery in the nine interactive galleries. This summer children (and adults) will have the chance to practice their medical skills as a Tudor Wise Woman pops by to demonstrate Tudor medicine and home remedies. Family Law

Holiday Plans Happy holidays can take some thought when a family doesn’t live together. Gabbie Clasper, Head of Family Law at Emsleys Solicitors, has some advice. Summer holidays are fast approaching with thoughts of happy family times and hot sunny days. As the schools start to break up, many parents face the practical reality of juggling work, kids and the financial stretch of holiday clubs, activities and a big family trip. For those parents who have separated, school holidays can cause high levels of anxiety with changes in routine causing added stress. The key is pre-planning and communication. It can be difficult to think about not seeing your kids for weeks at a time, but of course for them, the holidays mean the opportunity to spend longer periods of time with one of their parents – remember it’s about them and not you. There are things you can do to make it as easy as possible: n Plan ahead. Holiday arrangements can be difficult to sort out. Don’t drop plans on your ex two weeks before you want to go and expect them to change their commitments, childcare arrangements, etc. If you disagree, try to reach a compromise – it’s not about either of you winning, it’s about arrangements that work well for both of you and your children. n Support your kids emotionally. Let them get excited about going away with mum, dad or grandparents. It may not be something you can afford to do with them, but try to avoid showing any feelings of resentment in front of your kids. n Communicate, communicate, communicate. For reasons of safety and courtesy and recognition that your ex loves your kids too, make sure you communicate travel arrangements and details of where you are staying to the other parent. Write it down so that it’s not misunderstood or forgotten. This will

help avoid unnecessary worry if they hear of any accidents or that something has happened in a resort and they don’t know if that’s where you are staying. Also, give them the information they need to get the children ready for their journey and make sure that the other parent’s number can be found in case of emergency. n Be respectful. Your kids will miss the parent staying at home and vice versa. You don’t have to make them ring home at 5pm every day, but over the course of the holiday let them call a few times to say “I’ve got here, it’s fantastic”, or “we’ve had a great day” or “I’ll see you tomorrow”.
