Research released by the MET office and NHS reveals relaxed attitudes to sun care amongst many parents.

The study found that 34% think a sun tan helps build resistance to the sun while 37% think a sun tan is a sign of good health.

Genomics activities launch at Eureka!

Eureka! in Halifax has launched a range of fun activities exploring DNA and Genomics, developed with The Yorkshire and Humber NHS Genomic Medicine Centre (YHGMC). The learning activities, called ‘A Journey into DNA & Genomics’ launched at the children’s museum in May with the help of pupils from Holy Trinity Primary School in Halifax. Visitors to the museum will be able to have a go at various dates throughout the year.

Perfectly placed in the health themed gallery All About Me, the activities are a series of hands-on experiments to help explore the background science around genomics, introducing fascinating facts about DNA and its incredible structure, showing how traits are passed down through generations, and demonstrating how our genomes make us all completely unique.

Eureka!’s STEM & Public Engagement Manager, Chris Snowden said: “Genomics offers a fascinating glimpse into the future of medicine, so we’re really excited to have partnered with the YHGMC to showcase genomics and the 100,000 Genomes Project to our visitors at Eureka!, helping them understand more about what it is, how it is being used right now, and looking at some really mind-blowing ways in which it might be used in the future.”

LBT pantomime

The Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield is looking for 12 young people aged between 9 and 17 to perform as part of their Young Chorus in their 2018 professionally produced pantomime ALADDIN. It is looking for two teams of six, who will appear in the production on a rotating basis in the month long run from 7 December to 6 January.

Children will need to be available on Saturday 14 July for a 30-minute workshop style audition, where they will be asked to showcase their talents in singing, dancing and acting.

Auditions will be done in small groups and will be 30 minutes long, happening between 9am and 6pm. Times will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Coping with a

‘Tweenager’

By Claire Winter You’re at home, and suddenly your child starts eye-rolling and saying ‘so what’. You’ve guessed it…. your child is becoming a ‘tweenager’. As it will probably feel like just 5 minutes since they started school, this can come as a shock. The truth is that children are becoming teenagers at younger and younger ages – as young as age 10 for some girls with the onset of early adolescence.

So what do you need to know about your child’s impending entry into teenagehood?

I think the best advice I have been given about raising a teen is that your role is to give them the skills they need to become a successful adult. You are not there to save them from failure or be their best friend.

Understanding your teen Remember you teenager’s body is changing rapidly, as hormones shift and surge; the brain and emotions are on a permanent rollercoaster. Boys have to manage large surges of testosterone and girls have to cope with the mood swings that arrive along with oestrogen. At the same time, they are figuring out how to make decisions independently and how they want to live in the world.

Parents need to teach children how to look after themselves and become more resilient.

According to Edward Anthony, a mental health educator from Mental Wellbeing in Schools (www.mentalwellbeinginschools. org) the biggest problem teenagers face is misunderstanding the meaning of mental health. “They need to be able to access resilience, happiness, contentment, high performance, and peace of mind. When these qualities are in a teenager’s life, any other problems they face – anxiety, peer pressure, bullying, academic stress, social media pressures – are easier to navigate.”

for packing the right books in their bags, getting to where they need to be and doing their homework on time when parents gradually hand over the responsibility for this during primary school. By doing everything for them, running into school with forgotten items and supervising homework, they effectively tell their kids ‘you need me, without me you’d be useless’.

Parents need to teach children how to look after themselves and become more resilient.”

How Can Parents Help their Teens?

Edward and his team at Wellbeing in Schools are changing young people’s understanding of the impact of their thoughts. They remind them that thoughts are passing energy and that when their thinking is settled, they will be happier.

“Mental illness is the result of chronic mental stress. Humans experience chronic mental stress when they actively engage their ability to think. Generally speaking, when we actively use our ability to think to manage the tasks in our day, manage our feelings and behaviour, analyse who we are and our beliefs, ideas and expectations, we create chaos in our minds. A high level of thought creates a very low state of mind. In a low state of mind, it is impossible for a human being to be resilient, happy, innovative, loving or comfortable in their own skin.”

Edward says we can help our tweenagers by learning how state of mind can impact a relationship. “When people are experiencing a kind, open, loving and non-judgemental feeling, they can connect easily to others.

From that feeling, we make better decisions, enjoy relaxed and loving relationships, can have difficult conversations with a feeling of ease and openness, and we see more clearly that any kind of negativity or bad behaviour in another person is simply a product of a poor state of mind and bad feeling. This enables us to not take things personally and completely transforms parent/child relationships.”

Top Tips for Parents Model the behaviour you want to see in your child. Judy says, “If you want them to moderate their screen time, limit yours. If you want them to listen, hear what they have to say. If you want them to eat well, buy healthy food and cook healthy meals. They can’t eat biscuits and crisps if you don’t buy them, the same goes for sugary drinks.”

Judy also says to remember to believe in yourself. “You’ve done a great job bringing them up and getting them through primary school. Trust that this will stand them in good stead for secondary school. They’ll make mistakes, it’s how we learn, and we build self-esteem through getting that learning from the occasional failure. Be able to laugh about it, cuddle them and let them know you love them.”

One of the psychological goals of the teen years is to become independent from adults and to develop your own personality and place in society. Letting go of your teen might be a bumpy ride but if you do it with love and a sense of humour, you should make it through.

Early Years Care Better for Children’s Development A study funded by the Department of Education has found that the provision of early education to children aged 2 has a significant positive effect on their language and socio-emotional development when they reach age 3. This is regardless of their family’s level of advantage.

The report found that no matter how rich and how high the quality of a child’s home environment is or if early childcare is provided by relatives, friends or non-Ofsted registered carers, it was more beneficial for a 2 year old’s development to have spent time in early education and care in a group-based setting, such as a nursery or playgroup, or with a registered childminder.

Interestingly, the report found that increased time spent with registered childminders at age 2 is associated with a better outcome in terms of verbal development for children at age 3 than time spent in group-based settings. However, spending time in group or childminder settings is associated with similar amounts of benefit for social and behavioural outcomes.

The Study of Early Education and Development (SEED) is following the development of almost 6,000 children in England from ages 2 to 7.

Join Libraries across the region this summer for the Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge 2018 for children from 4 to 12 years old. The challenge is a national initiative to encourage primary age children to continue to read throughout the summer holidays. Research has shown that the Summer Reading Challenge improves children’s enjoyment of reading, as well as their reading range, confidence and motivation and it helps prevent the summer holiday dip in literacy skills.

All libraries will be involved in the Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge 2018, which this year is celebrating the Beano’s 80th anniversary. Every child who joins will receive a fold-up poster with six Beano character stickers to collect. There are also bookmarks, colour-in card glasses and wristbands to collect as you read more books. Every child who reads 6 books will receive a certificate and medal complete with presentation wallet which not only marks their achievement but are also fantastic to take back to school in September to impress teachers and friends!

Mischief Makers Summer Reading Challenge 2018 will celebrate adventure, friendship, reading and fun with all libraries having activities for children to support the challenge.

good day at school? there’s an app for that…

Behaviour-tracking apps are becoming increasingly popular as an educational tool. Parents no longer need to wait for the annual school report to learn how their child behaves at school — they can get instant updates through apps that monitor what they are doing in the classroom.

One of the most common apps, ClassDojo updates parents on what happens throughout the school day by sharing photos, videos and messages straight to their phone, and is now used by at least one teacher in half of all UK schools, according to its developers.

Teachers sign-up for ClassDojo and then select the behaviours they would like to reward. When a pupil responds in a positive or negative way they can award or deduct points. The aim of the app is to teach children developmental skills and incentivise them by real-time feedback and rewards.

Helping Your Child Avoid the Language Word Gap An Oxford University Press (OUP) report published in April revealed that both primary and secondary school teachers are seeing an increasing number of children with a limited vocabulary – a word gap. Why the Word Gap Matters: Oxford Language Report found that without enough words a child will not only find it difficult to understand instructions at school, but also to play and communicate with others.

Over 1,300 teachers surveyed reported that the word gap is not only affecting children’s achievements at school but also that it can have a damaging impact on self-esteem and a child’s ability to make friends.

In the report, OUP asked leading educational experts and teachers to offer their thoughts on the word gap and to share practical ideas on building children’s vocabulary and sparking their interest in learning new words. Here are just a few:

Not just Reading but Being Read To In the OUP survey, 93% of primary school teachers said that a root cause of the word gap is that children aren’t spending enough time reading for pleasure. Reading is an important way for children to learn vocabulary as they are more likely to come across new words in books than they will in spoken language. Encourage your child by reading aloud and sharing picture books, traditional tales, or non-fiction books when they are young. Help them read as widely as possible as they develop their own reading skills. If you are looking for inspiration, you can find booklists for all ages/ interests at www.oxfordowl.co.uk/forhome.

There are multiple benefits to reading aloud to your child, even when they are able read fluently. In this way your child experiences books that they may not be able to read on their own yet and is exposed to new words that they probably wouldn’t find in their own reading. For a bit of variety, try listening to audiobooks together – great for long car journeys!

Talk about books – ask your child what they liked or didn’t like about a story. What was their favourite bit? How do they think a character felt at a certain point? You can even try asking them to re-tell the story using their own words.

Talk, Talk, Talk!

It goes without saying that parents talk to their children all the time.

But research with very young children shows that if we use richer language, a child’s vocabulary can increase dramatically (e.g. instead of ‘Pick that up and bring it over here,’ say ‘Walk slowly to kitchen, pick up the fork carefully and return it to me’). Name and describe objects rather than falling back on pronouns (like ‘this’ and ‘that’). Try using alternative words for the same thing – instead of saying ‘It’s hot’, say ‘It’s scorching’ or ‘It’s blistering.’

Have Fun with Words Create an excitement around discovering and talking about new words together. Tell your child that it’s fine not to know what a word means – we are all learning new words all the time.

When your child comes across a new word in a book encourage them to talk to you about what the word might mean. Encourage them to use the other words and sentences around it to try to work out the meaning. In the report, Why Closing the Word Gap Matters, teacher Janine Wooldridge suggests that older children reading on their own could be encouraged to write unknown words on a card bookmark for you to discuss and look up in a dictionary together later. Talk about other ways you could use the new word – give them some examples of sentences using that word and encourage them to think of their own sentences.

Pick up the Dictionary It’s helpful if your child has access to a dictionary and a thesaurus at the right level for them, written in language they can understand.

Check for Understanding In the OUP report, educational psychologist Jean Gross (CBE) explains that she assessed children of all ages and abilities using a test that asked them to say what “on purpose” meant. Very few could do this, despite often hearing “You did that on purpose” at home and at school. Jean suggests that we should never assume that children know the meaning of even simple words. Make sure you check for understanding.

How to seize the summer with Explore Learning The summer holidays are a great time for families to spend time together.

However, it can also be a time when children forget some of the skills they have mastered at school. Miss Evans, a year 6 teacher, stated “Teachers often find that children begin the new school year having forgotten key skills. It is important that children have opportunities over the summer break to continue to develop their abilities.”

Here are some ideas from Charlotte Gater, Head of Curriculum at Explore Learning, on how to seize the summer.

Start a blog Give your child a little note book to jot ideas down whilst you are out and about, then write up what you’ve done. Take lots of pictures as these are a great tool to help children who find writing tricky. Encourage them to describe what is happening in the picture to get their creativity flowing.

Send a postcard Let your friends and family know what you’ve been up to.

They’re only short so are a wonderful way to get a bit of writing going during the holidays. If your child is reluctant to write, then why not try a postcard app like ‘By Post’? They can take their own pictures to make into postcards and type their message.

Read, read and read some more Pop a book in your bag so you can use this when travelling on days out. We will be uploading weekly activities that you can complete with your child to help keep them engaged with what they are reading.

When term time classes and drop in activities for under 5s shut up shop for the summer holidays, you may be left feeling as if the only entertainment options available are leisure attractions which can be expensive and are sometimes not age-appropriate. So, here’s the lowdown on alternative fun for your toddlers and pre-schoolers during this time.

Culture Kids

Getting Back to Nature

Plenty of museums are free to enter, or at least offer good holiday discounts and have lots of interactive entertainment to keep little brains engaged. Failing that, at least they are cool on a warm day and dry if it’s raining!

Flower Power All you need is a jam jar (or something with a lid), flower petals and any other scented (non-dog-poo) outdoor offerings, a little water and a mixing stick.

Hey presto, you have a bespoke smelly perfume, potion or concoction! Your child can even make their own label to stick on.

National Trust A child’s fascination with bugs can be fascinating to watch.

Pimp Up Your Walk If going out for another walk has your child digging their heels in, try giving it a new twist. Prepare a piece of paper with a circle, triangle, rectangle and square drawn down one side and track objects that are these shapes along the way eg fence posts, road signs, wheels, swings etc.

You can do a similar thing with textures, for example, rough, smooth, tickly, silky and so on.

The National Trust may not immediately spring to mind for this young age group but there are plenty of very child-friendly gardens and outdoor spaces that are perfect for little ones to enjoy running around. Deal Hunting Your Local Council Once you’ve exhausted the options in the What’s On section of this magazine, look at your local council website to find out about free or discounted holiday sessions at local leisure centres, libraries, theatres and other venues.

Kids Eat Free Lots of restaurants help families out in the holidays and drum up their own business, so it is always worth having a shop around for good deals.

Keep little hands busy and titillate taste buds by making fruit kebabs, juicy lollies and berry crumbles. If your children like rainbows, they can design their very own fruit rainbow on a plate for pudding.

Washing Up Get an enthusiastic toddler together with a washing up brush and they can be (a little) more useful than you think.

This activity can also keep them blissfully happy for ages! So as long as everything in the bowl is kid-friendly, let them wash away!

Keeping Cool Water pistol targets Fill up the pistols, line up some empty cans or paper cups and fire away. For added fun, keep a score card.

Sprinklers Failing the beach and assuming it’s not dry enough for a hose-pipe ban, water sprinkler action can’t fail to cool off the steamiest of tempers and meltdowns.

Bath If it’s Just. Too. Hot. retreat inside to the relative cool of the bathroom, run a tepid bath and pile your young ones in.

Vegetable Paint Printing Give life to the stubby bits of veg lurking in the bottom of the fridge. Turn them into paint stamps before dumping them in the bin, compost or food waste

Indoor Dens and Picnics Who said you have to be outside to build a den or have a picnic?

Any combination of chairs, bed, tables, sofa, indoor clothes dryer plus an old sheet or blanket, the perfect hidey hole for all manner of adventures.

Ring your friends If you are feeling stuck at home and all at sea, the chances are there will be a friend nearby in exactly the same position. Never hesitate to pick up the phone and join forces. They will be as glad as you that you did.

Have buckets and spades at the ready and head beach-side for rock-pooling and castle building.

Inland lakes and urban areas often have man-made “beach” areas and activities going on over the summer, so check your local websites for information.

‘Staycations’ are still proving to be a popular choice in the UK. Post-brexit ‘staycation’ searches and bookings went up a quarter last year, according to research by Travel marketing group Sojern. Claire Winter takes a look at some of the best options.

Lodge 37, Norfolk Holiday lodges used to be considered a bit old-fashioned and chilly.

They are now a chic staycation option. Lodge 37 has been lovingly refurbished and is a Californian style Lodge located in the Cliff House Holiday Park in Dunwich on the Suffolk Heritage Coast between Southwold and Aldeburgh. Just a two-hour drive from London, it has fantastic sea views and is a one-minute walk from Dunwich Beach.

We were lucky enough to stay there for the weekend. The sea views are fantastic, and the open plan style of the living room and kitchen area is perfect for socialising. The kids' bedroom has two sets of bunk beds in it so you can sleep four kids in there easily. If you are too lazy to cook there is a great restaurant called the Lost Churches just a few minutes’ walk away which serves a variety of tasty meals and snacks.

It has a well-stocked bar with a large variety of gins for the discerning gin drinker. We ate there the first night, and the food was delicious.

You can also go on lots of great walks; we did a great 8-mile circular walk that encompassed cream tea at National Trust Coastguards tea room. There is so much to see and do, a weekend isn’t long enough.

Farrs Meadow, Dorest This idyllic campsite is set in picturesque Dorset; it’s a 15-minute walk from the River Stour and a short drive from the village Wimbourne. The campsite is tents only, you have to leave your car in the car park, and they take your gear up to the site with a quad bike. We loved this campsite because you could have an open fire.

Nothing beats sitting around a fire toasting marshmallows with the kids. The site also offers Yurts and Gypsy caravans if you don’t fancy lugging all your camping gear out of the garage or loft for a weekend away. Be warned you get to shower and go to the loo in converted horseboxes, which the kids loved doing of course! A head torch is a good investment. www.farrsmeadow.co.uk

The summer holidays will soon be here! If you’re short on ideas for fun on a budget, add these to your list, as they won’t break the bank!

Sporting Events Wimbledon kicks off early in July, and many places will have tennis-themed events to celebrate. You could also host your own party in the garden. Get some rackets with a soft ball and some strawberries and cream.

Glasgow (together with Berlin) is hosting the inaugural European Championships (https://www.glasgow2018.com/championships) this August, an exciting new multi-sport event bringing together some of the continent’s leading sports including Athletics, Aquatics, Cycling, Gymnastics, Rowing and Triathlon.

The Extreme Sailing Series™ is sailing into Cardiff Bay, Wales, over the August Bank Holiday weekend, as the headline act to the Cardiff Harbour Festival. An international fleet of hydro-foiling GC32 catamarans will battle it out in the sixth stop of their global tour. There will also be FREE shore-side entertainment for the whole family. Spectators can enjoy live music, entertainment, bars, food stalls, a kids’ zone and expert commentary on the racing. www.extremesailingseries.com.

Visit a Landmark

Britain has an amazing array of museums and entry is often free or by donation. Head to London for one of the “big 3” – the Science Museum (www.sciencemuseum.org.uk), the Natural History Museum (www.nhm.ac.uk) or the V&A (www.vam.ac.uk).

Our family favourite is the National History Museum. You’ll need at least half a day as there are thousands of exhibits ranging from dinosaurs, to volcanicity, to evolution. Don’t miss the skeleton of the Blue Whale. If you’ve done these, try a lesser-known one, like The Cartoon Museum (www.cartoonmuseum.org) in Holborn.

Explore Nature Britain has some of the world's most beautiful beaches.

We have nearly 7,800 miles of coast, ideal for surfing, walking, exploring and wildlife watching. Most places in the UK are no more than two hours from a beach. Northumberland has an incredible stretch of beaches and you can visit the mighty Bamburgh Castle (www.bamburghcastle.com). Entry for a family four is a reasonable £26, and it is well worth the cost to see one of the UK’s finest castles. Off the coast, you can visit the beautiful Farne islands, which have a great array of wildlife including migrating birds, seals, and dolphins.

The rugged Cornish coast is always a good place to visit too.

If you are a fan of Poldark, you should visit Kynace Cove, which is one of the locations that doubles as Nampara in the series.

Yorkshire is packed full of landmarks from castles to country houses and parks, follies, abbeys and ancient ruins – and of course its amazing countryside!

If you visit London and Tower Bridge this summer, you can visit the exhibition with a new family activity pass (family tickets usually start at £15.30). Built by the Romans in 122AD to keep the Scots out after they invaded Britain, this amazing stone wall once stretched nearly 80 miles from coast to coast in the north of England. It is thought to have taken three legions of men at least six years to complete. It’s now part of a 150-mile UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the UK’s most spectacular Roman monuments.
