How to help your child transfer to secondary school It’s one of the biggest transitions of childhood: moving to secondary school. From travelling independently to remembering when homework is due in, your child will need to become a good deal more self-sufficient. Here’s how to ease the transition during the months before. Ramp up responsibilities
Senior school children have to be considerably more responsible for their own belongings and themselves. Whereas primary school teachers send letters to parents, at ‘big’ school, communication on day-to-day issues might well be to your child only. Begin by trying to remind your child less about what kit or books they need daily.
Take the stage!
Begin building independence out and about
Who hasn’t dreamed of being on stage at some point? Whether it’s rocking out with an air guitar and hairbrush-mic, or wafting around your bedroom in a synthetic net tutu! Here are some of our favourite local clubs that will bring out the star in your child.
Listen out for concerns
Havant Stage Coach Theatre Arts School
Most secondary school pupils travel to school minus mum and dad, so get yours used to being out without you. It’ll be less daunting for them if this starts on the journey to primary school, rather than being thrown into travelling alone on a lesser-known route. If they haven’t started walking to school alone or with a friend already, the summer term of year six is a good time to begin. The first time or two you could walk a little behind them at least part of the way to keep an eye out. Some children take this huge change in their stride and are ready to move on, while others will feel anxious. Common concerns include getting lost around a much larger school, dealing with the journey, making new friends and managing the homework load. The key is to keep communication going between you – ask now and then how they’re feeling about their new school and listen and reassure them.
Attend settling-in days
Most secondaries hold a session for new joiners, usually during the summer term of year six. This is an important opportunity to get to know the buildings, potential classmates and teachers and it should make the first day less intimidating. Consider attending any social events at the school too, such as a concert or the summer fair.
Introduce them to other children going to the same school
This won’t matter so much if half your child’s class is heading to the same secondary but if there won’t be a familiar face, try and find prospective classmates through the local grapevine and then arrange a meet up.
Once they have started, keep these in mind... Expect them to be tired and emotional…
Many year sevens get very tired thanks to the ‘newness’, on top of a longer day and a more complicated journey. Stick to early nights and restful weekends to fend off exhaustion – and the moodiness that goes with this.
Get super-organised with homework
At primary, pupils might only have had a small amount of homework; expect the game to be raised now. Not only will there be more but keeping on top of when it all needs handing in can be complicated. Help your child help themselves by suggesting they complete each task soon, so that it doesn’t build up. A homework planner can also be useful.
Get used to knowing much less about what goes on
In primary, you might well have been at the school gates most days and familiar with your child’s friends, parents and teachers. This will change: with independent travel comes a more hands-off approach.
Be there for them
It’s tempting to think this independence means you’re being made redundant come September but they’ll still need you - albeit in different ways. Be there as a sounding board - someone to listen and advise. And of course, they’ll still be calling upon the Bank of Mum and Dad and parental taxi service more than ever…

Fruity summer Snowy Strawberries
Snacks
You will need:
This one is super easy and great to get the kids helping in the kitchen. Ideal for summer snacks, they can be kept in the freezer and brought out after a hot day at school.
Lemon or lime juice
Put some of the Greek yoghurt in a bowl and roll each strawberry in the yoghurt. Lay them on a flat baking tray. When you have covered all the fruit with the yoghurt, place the tray in the freezer on an empty shelf and leave to freeze overnight. You can then take them off the tray and store them in freezer bags until needed. 1 punnet strawberries
You will need:
1 large pot Greek yoghurt
Cut the larger fruit into squares and squeeze some lime or lemon juice over them to prevent them from going brown. Push the straws through the pieces of fruit one at a time – make sure you mix up the colours to make it look extra special. Note: Children who are under four should not be offered whole grapes because of the danger of choking.
Healthy Banana Granola Bars These tasty bars are full of protein thanks to the hidden gems; quinoa and chia seeds.
How to make:
You will need: 120g oats 2 mashed bananas, 60g quinoa ¼ tsp salt, 1 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp chia seeds, ½ tsp vanilla extract
60g chopped almonds and pecans Heat the oven to 350F 40g dried cranberries, degrees / 180C / Gas 4. 50g butter or margarine Grease and line a baking tray roughly 20 cm square. 2 tbsp honey Mix together the quinoa, chia seeds, salt and cinnamon with the oats in a large bowl. Add the mashed banana and vanilla and then the nuts and dried fruit. In a small saucepan, melt the butter or margarine over a low heat and add the honey. When melted, fold in to the granola mixture. Pour into the pan and press it down until it is level. Bake for 20-25 minutes. Cut into fingers while still warm and leave to cool completely.
Fruity Summer Rolls
Usually filled with tofu, herbs and noodles, they are a great snack and if you can find the rice paper wrappers in a local oriental food supplier, you can not only make those but also these amazing fruity rolls, perfect for lunch boxes.
You will need: Rice paper wrappers Mixture of summer fruit; watermelon, strawberries, apple, pear, peach, mango, kiwi fruit etc.
Drizzle with lime juice over the fruit to prevent browning and stir well to combine the fruits together.
Mint leaves (optional) Lime juice
Add a few small or torn mint leaves if your child likes them. Place a small pile of the fruit at the centre of a rice paper wrapper. Roll one side in, then the two ends and finally roll it up. Lay it on the open side to stop it falling open. If you like you can tie it with a chive or a small piece of string but this should be taken off before your child eats it. Place a few rolls in a small lunch box for your child’s packed lunch!

Tips for flying
with young children
Will you be travelling abroad with your young children this year? Here are 15 tips for a stress-free journey... Inform the airline when you book your flight that you have young children and take advantage of all the extra help they offer parents. Check if your airport has a dedicated crèche. Some are equipped with toys, books and rest rooms. Ask if you can take your buggy to the flight’s gate so your little one will have somewhere familiar to nap if your flight is delayed. Pack plenty of wet wipes in your handbag. Get your children used to drinking room temperature drinks as it can be difficult to keep bottles cool or warm them up at the airport. Pre-book children's meals on flights. They get served first and you'll avoid the endless wait for food.
Breastfeed your baby, or have a drink ready for an older child when the flight is taking off and landing as the sucking motion will help equalise the pressure in the ears (often an uncomfortable cause of babies crying on flights).
Dress children in layers as they can get too warm on a flight – or too cold if the air conditioning is on full blast.
Under-twos usually travel free as long as they sit on a parent’s lap for the entire flight. If your budget will stretch to it maybe pay the extra fare so you have an extra seat.
Let your child have their own carry-on bag of small games and treats.
A seat near the bulkhead (where there is a division or toilet in front) may have a bit of extra room, so your toddler could play on the floor. Take plenty of baby food and mini snacks with you. Try to time your child’s day so they will have a nap on the flight. Some airlines provide pillows and blankets.
Take non-battery toys and games with you like good old fashioned colouring books.
Keep an eye on your child’s feet to make sure the seat in front doesn't get kicked. But most of all; try to keep calm and enjoy yourself… it is your well-earned holiday too! Emma’s Diary is the UK’s most trusted and influential pregnancy and baby channel. Working in partnership with The Royal College of General Practitioners (RCGP) for more than 23 years, they provide parents-to-be and new parents with the very best medical and practical information. Visit www.emmasdiary.co.uk
Teach your child to ride a bike
in 7 easy steps Teaching your child to ride a bike has never been easier with these seven simple steps.
Always wear a helmet
Begin with a balance bike
A steering limiter is highly recommended as this will enable your child to keep in the right direction and prevent falls. While you’re looking at safety equipment, it’s worth purchasing bright coloured clothing or safety vests to ensure she is seen by others at night time.
Balance bikes are great because they have no pedals or stabilisers and are much lighter. Because children can use their feet to balance and move themselves along, those as young as two can learn to balance on their own.
Start on flat ground
Always begin to teach your child on flat ground – so at a local park or area with no traffic. You can work your way up to small hills.
Teach them to use the brake
At the age of two and a half to three, children are able to operate a hand brake, as long as it’s gentle enough for their fingers. Begin by showing your child how the brake works and encourage her to practise.
16 | Tel: 02393 117 561 | editor@familiessolenteast.co.uk
Wearing a helmet is a must. The sooner your little one gets used to it, the better. We recommend that you shop for a helmet together to ensure your little biker likes it and will therefore wear it.
Look for safety add-ons
Get an adjustable seat
Try to choose a bike that has an adjustable seat as this means the bike can be adjusted to suit their height. When your child is on the bike, both feet should be firmly on the ground – not just the toes – and the knees should be slightly bent.
Upgrade to a bigger bike
When your child has developed enough skill and confidence you can transfer them to a pedal bike without stabilisers.
New Website for Families! Families magazine and much loved local website Mums in The Know have joined forces to become familiesonline.co.uk Destined to become the number 1 resource for local families, www.familiesonline.co.uk has a network of over 340 hyper-local sites across the UK. Like our magazine, the local sites in the Solent area are guaranteed to give you the very best ideas for spending time with your family locally. The site will be more comprehensive than ever and easier to use (on all of your devices!) offering inspirational ideas for things to do with the kids and helpful parenting tips and advice to support you and your family. It’s in the same place, so visit familiesonline.co.uk and find your local site!
WE ARE RECRUITING! We are looking for two Area Managers to run our Chichester/Bognor Regis site and Isle of Wight site If you are a local parent living in these areas looking for a flexible working opportunity and would like to know more about joining our team, please email sharon@familiessolenteast.co.uk with a covering letter and CV
Thousands of ideas for things to do with the kids from hundreds of parents across the UK
Your new Families Online Area Managers We asked our new online Area Managers to tell us a little bit about themselves. You may well already know Shelley from Mums in the Know Portsmouth, who we are super excited to now have as part of our Families team! Shelley Cook - Area Manager for Families Online Portsmouth ‘‘I live with my husband and two children in Cosham. I was born on the Isle of Wight, and have lived all over the country, so I feel like I've come full circle! I used to practise family law as a solicitor but I've been a work at home mum for 5 years now. I launched the Mums in the Know Portsmouth site in April 2015 and I've really enjoyed getting out and about and meeting people, finding new places to take the children and writing the events guides. It's amazing how much Portsmouth has to offer. Having been a Families Magazine reader for years, I'm delighted that we are now joining forces and that the MITK Portsmouth site will be re-branded Families Portsmouth. I'm really looking forward to working with the Families team and can't wait to get started.’’
Gemma Clifton - Area Manager for Families Fareham and Gosport ‘‘I have a 1 year old, Theo and I’m expecting another boy in September (definitely going to have my hands full!). My husband Glen, is in the Royal Navy, so we tend to make the most of our family times. We really enjoy being outdoors, so going on lots of walks with the dog, or visiting local parks. We live in such a beautiful area, so there is always somewhere new to visit! I want to make the Families Fareham and Gosport site a friendly and welcoming platform that families can turn to without the need for trawling the web for hours, as I know how important family time is! Plus I know first-hand how time-consuming trying to find local events, group, classes can be, I’ve had days that have pretty much disappeared because I was trying to find something to do!’’
Caroline Roope - Area Manager for Families Havant and Waterlooville ‘‘I’ve lived in and around Hampshire for much of my adult life and I’m currently living in Horndean with my husband and two children. We love it here and enjoy everything the village has to offer – great schools, a lovely community, and the countryside and Portsmouth right on our doorsteps.
If you are a local business looking for advertising options, call us on
02393 117 561
The children bring home our local Families magazine in their book bags and I always read it cover to cover – it’s such a great resource for local families. The articles are always so well written and relevant to our life-stage, and the event listings are my bible in the school holidays! I love writing and hope to be able to create some really interesting and inspiring content for the Havant and Waterlooville website. I’m really thrilled to be joining Families at such an exciting time and hope I can successfully advocate the brand and engage other local families with what Families has to offer’’
