Local LocalNews News • Cats should not be shut out of the house for long periods of time and must always be able to find suitable warmth and shelter. • Rabbits and guinea pigs may need extra bedding to keep warm and could need to be moved into a shed or garage for shelter from the weather.

PETS IN THE COLD Winter can be hard for wildlife and every year the RSPCA rescues lots of animals which are dehydrated, hungry and cold. To help keep animals of all kinds happy and healthy in our cold weather, the RSPCA has offered some advice. • Dogs with thin or sparse coats may benefit from a coat when being exercised outdoors. Two or three shorter walks may be a better option to avoid being out in the cold for a long period, though maintaining some routine is also important. • You and your dog both need reflective clothing in the dark! Keep dogs away from lakes or ponds that may have iced over to prevent them from falling in. • Horses and ponies will also need constant access to shelter and fresh water which hasn’t frozen over as well as extra food and blankets if necessary.

• Birds may have difficulty finding natural foods such as berries, insects, seeds, worms and fruit. Any alternative food you put out during these cold months will help such as crumbled bread, stale cake and biscuits, cheese and cooked rice. • Badgers do not hibernate but they do sleep through much of the severe weather. However, when the ground is frozen they have a tough time finding food. Nibbles such as lightly cooked meats, cheese, unsalted or unsweetened peanuts and fruit will be welcomed.

The unusual shell keep encloses a mound containing the massive foundations of the original Norman tower with a well below. The whole site, which includes the keep, Bishop’s Palace, gatehouse and grounds is surrounded by an outer curtain wall and boasts spectacular views across Farnham. A small museum area is now being developed in the old stables to display 900 years of history at the Castle. The centrepiece will be an animated aerial graphic illustrating the development of the Farnham Castle site. The exhibit is set to open in April 2011 and will also be free of charge for the general public. For more information and on-line tours of Farnham Castle visit www.farnhamcastle. co.uk or call 01252 721194.

Leatherhead Leisure Centre’s popular Swim School will restart in the newly refurbished swimming pools in January 2011.

• Squirrels enjoy unsweetened and unsalted nuts including hazelnuts, walnuts, and almonds as well as chopped apple, carrots, spinach or green beans.

Swim School offers children of all abilities from three months upwards the chance to start or improve their swimming, with specialist coaching staff.

• Hedgehogs hibernate between November and mid to late March so you can help by raking up the leaves in your garden and providing them with nests to rest in.

Classes have been reorganised for greater convenience, with more flexible hours. The courses now follow the Amateur Swimming Association (ASA) plans so that children work towards gaining badges and certificates that are recognised throughout the country.

For more information on how you can help, log onto www.rspca.org.uk If you see an animal in distress, call the RSPCA’s 24-hour advice and cruelty line on 0300 1234 999.

Farnham Castle entry now free! Farnham Castle, which officially re-opened the 12th Century keep to the public following a major restoration programme in 2010, is now currently attracting around 500 visitors per week. Following a Heritage Lottery Fund grant of over £700,000, the keep is now open free of charge to visitors, seven days a week, throughout most of the year.

Swim School restarts at Leatherhead's new pool

Admissions are already being accepted and places are filling up fast. “Following the ASA plans brings a lot of benefits,” says the Swim School head teacher. “The standardised system is easier to follow for kids and parents alike and is the same system being used in a large number of swimming classes across the United Kingdom.” For more information Tel: Leatherhead Leisure Centre on 01372 377674 or drop by reception to book a place.

Leatherhead launches new St John Ambulance Cadet Unit A first aid taster day last year that offered young people aged 10-18 the chance to go hands-on with bandages, fake wounds and blood and learn resuscitation skills stimulated so much interest that Leatherhead now has a new 15-strong St John Ambulance Cadet Unit. Cadet Leader Pat Jenkins said the response from local families was fantastic. Pat signed up 15 Cadets and four new adult members for Leatherhead Division and directed four more recruits to other divisions closer to their homes. “It was a GREAT day!” she said.

LocalNews News Local Half term fun at Surrey Libraries’ Children's Book Festival If you’re looking for exciting things to keep the children occupied during spring half term, look no further than this year’s Children’s Book Festival.

A Blue Tit in a garden near you

Watch The Birdie! 2011 is Big Schools' Birdwatch 10th birthday. From 24 January to 4 February 2011, the RSPB would like schools and youth groups to celebrate - not by blowing out candles and eating cake (although they can if they want to), but by staring out of the window! The RSPB would like you to spend a fun-filled hour discovering the birds visiting your school grounds, or a nearby local outdoor space. Big Schools’ Birdwatch aims to encourage children and their teachers to identify and take an interest in the birds visiting their school grounds. Schools across the UK will be making bird feeders and binoculars, turning classrooms into bird hides and getting excited children into position with their noses pressed against the window. Little Schools’ Birdwatch is also running again this year for 5’s and under - and we’ve now also introduced Really Big Schools’ Birdwatch for Key Stage 3 (11-14yr olds). The RSPB supplies a free teacher’s pack with plenty of ideas and information. Tel Caroline Offord, Project Manager Tel: 01767 693176 or email: caroline.offord@rspb.org.uk

The festival will run in libraries across Epsom and Ewell, Mole Valley, Reigate and Banstead and Tandridge for three fun-filled weeks from 19 February until 12 March. Libraries will be hosting a variety of events for children aged 0 -14yrs, from author visits and illustrator workshops to magic shows and theatre performances. Join Tony De Saulles for a Horrible Science drawing workshop and grab the chance to meet Darren Shan, the master of horror to find out more about his amazing books. Meet Elmer

and The Gruffalo or try your hand at making comics. There’s something for everyone. For more details and to book tickets visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/childrensbookfestival or visit your local library.

Protect your children from Electro-Magnetic Radiation We’ve all heard that mobiles may carry health risks, and although most of the research into mobile phones and phone masts has found no effect on human health, few researchers look specifically at the effects of phone radiation on children and young people. “Invisible radio frequency radiation can alter living cells and create the same types of damage that we know increase the risk of cancer and neurological disease,” says Dr Devra Davis, public health specialist and author of Disconnect: The Truth About Cell Phone Radiation. “Our children are growing up in a sea of radio frequency radiation that did not exist five years ago,” she adds, "and there is a belief that children are more susceptible because their brain tissue is still growing and their skulls are thinner. "

In France, research which reveals that exposure to carcinogens in young people comes with more serious risks than for adults has led to the decision to ban primary school children from using mobiles, and discouraging phone advertising aimed at children. Wireless communication systems are being removed from some public places such as libraries. The science may still be sketchy but until it becomes clearer we might follow the advice of Dr Davis: keep calls on mobile phones short, text rather than call, never carry a live mobile next to your body and always use a headset. You can see her advice to teenagers at www.environmentalhealthtrust.org or check out the guidance from a group of concerned parents who have looked closely at the science: www.wiredchild.org

Local News Local News Babies and Toddlers Are you green enough for your baby? Eco-tips from Joanna Parry

Many of us try to be as green as possible when it comes to our babies – we know that raising an eco-friendly baby is not only safer for baby but also reduces the impact on the environment. We recycle, we try to reduce our carbon impact and are aware of wasteful packaging. We buy bamboo or organic cotton clothing, fair trade baby products and organic, locally grown vegetables. But how green are we really? Here are a few more tips.

The Great Nappy Debate. The

jury still seems to be out as to whether cloth nappies have a lower ecological footprint than disposables - according to research a baby will get through about 6,000 nappies before being toilet trained, each taking 200500 years to decompose; on the other hand, cloth nappies require water and energy for washing. Whichever you choose, you can still go greener.

Advert:Layout 8

Are you completely exhausted? Does your baby need settling at night? Do you need help with sleep training? Get yourself a good night’s sleep! Call on our experienced team of Night Nannies. Tel: 07800 843618 www.nightnannies.com louise@nightnannies.com

With cloth nappies, hang them out to dry instead of using a dryer, or use a nappy Page service which has a lower environmental impact because of the efficiency of washing large quantities at one time. Look for cloth nappies made from eco-friendly material such as hemp, bamboo or organic cotton. If disposables are more your cup of tea, try ecodisposable nappies, which only take about 100 days to biodegrade. A good example are Tushies eco disposable nappies from www. greenbaby.co.uk.

Cleaning: it doesn’t cost any more to buy cleaning products made from natural plant and mineral ingredients than conventional ones. And don’t always reach for the bleach -

the risk of contamination to your baby is very low from floors, walls and other surfaces. Use a steam cleaner to clean carpets instead of toxic carpet cleaners, and wash rugs regularly. Avoid air fresheners, scented nappy bins or anything else with a fragrance in it. Safer laundry detergents are becoming popular too, and try to avoid fragrant fabric softeners that can release harmful chemicals.

Feeding: Breastfeeding is free and green, yet there is still a thought that breast milk can contain harmful chemicals. Some persistant organic pollutants (POPs) don’t break down quickly in the environment or in our bodies – they accumulate in the fat of the fish and meat we eat, and then in our own fat until they turn up in breast milk. Many POPs have now been banned in the UK so levels are gradually declining but if you are concerned about them there are some simple steps you can take to reduce your baby’s exposure. Don’t smoke and stay away from smokers, avoid unnecessary medications and alcohol, try to avoid inhalation or skin contact with solvents and avoid using pesticides in your home and garden and on your pet. Eat organic food and include more fruit and veg and less high fat dairy and meat products in your diet. On the other hand if bottlefeeding is your preference, there are several good organic formulas on the market. Although most plastic bottles are now considered free of harmful BPAs, (see page 7), to be doubly safe choose glass bottles with silicone teats.

Babies and Local Toddlers News

Making baby bottles safer The European Commission has announced a

ban on the use of bisphenol-A (BPA) plastics in baby bottles. The ban will come into effect during 2011. The controversial chemical BPA is still currently used in some baby bottles sold in the UK. There is evidence to suggest it can interfere with healthy growth and body functions, and mimics the effect of the hormone oestrogen in the body. Babies are particularly vulnerable to hormone-mimicking effects as they grow rapidly in the early months and years. Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive, NCT, said:

“We have been calling for a UK ban on selling baby bottles containing bisphenol-A plastics for HELPING several years, and are thrilled their import and sale will soon be outlawed across the EU.

There are now viable alternatives to BPA that can be used to produce clear plastic baby bottles, and so there is no reason to continue using this chemical when there is concern about potential risks to young babies. We would now like to see BPA plastics banned in other products, as the chemical is also used in the linings of some formula tins and baby food containers.” Editor’s Note: Make sure you ask about the bisphenol-A content of any baby bottle you buy – it will make the retailer think more urgently about this change and report the public’s concern to those manufacturers who might still be using it.

Mums Local News in Business Local News

New Year, New Mum, New Business? Research reveals that over three quarters (76%) of British mums who don't work for themselves would like to do so. Running your own business from home is a dream shared by mums in their millions, but the majority of them are unable or unwilling to turn it into reality. Many are daunted because they lack reliable information about launching and operating a business successfully: "It's one thing to have an idea for a business and the desire to work flexibly around family lifebut quite another to be confident that your idea is viable, to put money behind it and to make sure your business is set up properly” says Antonia. If your New Year's resolution is to find a family-friendly way to work, flexible working experts Antonia Chitty and Helen Lindop can help. In their new book, "Start a Family-Friendly Business: brilliant business ideas for mums" they explain how to

• Find great business ideas that work well with a family • Assess the ideas you have and see how they might work • Understand your family needs and your goals for a business • Create a plan that will put you on the first step to success.

Here are some tips from Antonia & Helen for budding ‘mumpreneurs’

List your priorities such as earning money, or finding work that lets you stay at home with your children. Then, write down your skills and ask others what they think you're good at. Think about the hours you can devote to work. Be realistic if you plan to work around the kids, as children may not understand "mummy's working". Write down your work hours, whether they are 12-2 each day during nap time, 9.30-11.30 to fit with nursery, 7-9 in the evenings or a combination on different days. Research the market for your business. Will people buy your product or service? Is it unique enough to be appealing? Look at your competition and work out how your business could be different or better.

Prepare a business plan. Set out aims and objectives, and the steps you need to take to achieve your goals. Pop into a local Enterprise Agency for advice. See if they offer a free start-up course, a great way to get your business plan going.

Register as self-employed.

By Antonia Chitty and Helen Lindop,

You have 3 months to let the flexible working advisors Inland Revenue know you have started a business, or you could end up with a £100 fine.

Work out how you will promote and market your business. Have a promotion planning session where you investigate advertising, marketing, PR and events. Note on a wall calendar what activities you will do each month to promote the business. Spend 15 minutes each day on promotion. Promote your business online. Start a Twitter account in the name of your business, create a blog and a Facebook fan page. To make things easier use Twittterfeed or Friendfeed to link your different networking sites together. Keep good records. It is easier to note down every item of expenditure from the start than to have to deal with a pile of receipts when your tax return is due in. You can claim many of your business costs against tax too. The Inland Revenue can send an advisor to your home who can talk you through what you can claim. Make the most of every customer. From day one, start a customer database so you can send out regular newsletter and exclusive subscriber offers. It is easier to get existing customers to buy again than to find new ones. Get some great support. Go back to your list of skills and add in areas that you struggle with. Allow in your business plan for help: you could find a book keeper, or get someone to help with PR, marketing, packing and post office runs or admin. This can allow your business to grow and develop and mean you spend your time most effectively.

Watch out for your work-life balance. Business can easily take over.

Looking for additional income? Are you self motivated, honest and ethical?

Have a finish time each day, put your work away, and make some time to relax.

Mums in Business Three mums in business – making it work

1 Christianne James realized a gap in the market existed

when she was pregnant and searched online for baby clothes. Her ‘light-bulb’ moment came when she realised her online search for baby clothes and nursery equipment was not very straightforward. Having worked in a City bank, she was looking for a better work-life balance and was inspired by Richard Branson’s autobiography and the ‘just do it’ approach. Christianne has recently celebrated the third birthday of 4little1s.com Christianne’s husband is an IT specialist and was able to invest in the new company – two distinct advantages! However, this didn’t prevent the work being stressful to begin with and many long hours were spent getting the business set up. Her lessons were that you need confidence in your idea, should not be afraid of hard work and are stubborn in your belief that you can ‘make it happen’. And Christianne does not underestimate the value of a supportive family who understand the business and are willing to air their opinions when needed – “worth its weight in gold!” says Christianne.

2 me&i was set up in 2004

by two Swedish mums who found a distinct lack of high quality clothes with funky colours, unisex – rather than frilly (girls) or plain (boys), comfortable-to-wear clothes that were playful in colour and design. So, with artistic Mums in business - fit work direction from a talented around your family life print designer, and a panel of children to road-test the clothes, Susan Engvall and Helene Nyrell set up me&i. Not only does it provide great clothes, but specialist me&i distributors showcase the ranges of clothes in your own home! That way you can really know what the clothes look and feel like – it takes all the uncertainty out of shopping! If you are thinking about returning to work or just want to change to a job that fits round your family, take a look at the company’s website as they are currently looking for people to join them as self-employed me&i representatives.

Sharon Millroy is enjoy77ing the experience as an Usborne distributor, partly because it doesn’t require a huge financial outlay, which starting up your own business often does, but also because she feels part of a team who can advise and mentor her. Sharon says, "After hosting an Usborne Book Party and earning 20% in free books I decided to become an Usborne Organiser, I have met some amazing people and am having lots of fun. Usborne is a recognised name, the books are fantastic and the work fits in around my family life as the parties can be done in the day, evening or at weekends, I can even taken my children with me.” Sharon is now busy building her own team – so contact her if you think this might be something for you!

HOLIDAYS

Family-friendliness reaches new heights. Family holidays are very precious things, which have to respond to the changing needs of every family as the children grow older. So it’s great if we can get our holiday choices right. After all, the moment comes only too soon when our kids prefer to holiday with their friends! Holidays aren’t always great success stories and this is usually because somebody’s needs weren’t met, or everybody’s expectations of the destination and the accommodation were over-optimistic. It pays to get the right sort of holiday for the age and inclinations of the whole family – and that is sometimes a tall order. Here we provide rock-solid recommendations from small companies that offer detailed advice to give you the right accommodation and a range of activities to suit the whole family. By having this personal service you can be sure of getting the holiday that you need and want. All these holidays can provide year-round breaks, with out-of-season prices offering superb value. But for most of us our ‘main’ holiday away is in summer, and it is with summer in mind that we have provide the following information, where family-friendliness and personal service really does reach new heights. All of the properties mentioned here cater for just about everything most families could hope for!

Small families, large families If you are planning a break with another family or a large extended family look at the holiday houses in Devon, Cornwall and Wales from Libbear Barton and Recommended Family Holidays. Enjoy 40 acres of Libbear Barton’s country estate in Devon with one beautiful house to sleep 14 and an option of a further three cottages each sleeping eight.

1 10

In Wales and Cornwall, speak to Lucilla at Recommended Family Holidays in order to hand pick the right house in the best place for you. From 5* luxury such as Clydey in Wales, which has just won the Pembrokeshire self catering award (again) and Tredethick Farm in Cornwall (only £350 for five days in November if you can go then!) to Cornish Beach Belle, a 2-bed beach chalet with prices from £275 per week to £750 per week in the main school summer holidays. Speak to Lucilla about the groups of cottages at Bosinver, Coombe Mill and Pencuke Farm in Cornwall, or Clydey and Asheston Eco Barns for example – a wonderful way of going away with friends. Single properties such as Old Oak Barn in Wales and Looe Island View in Cornwall can be found in rural or village locations.

When you need every detail to be right, and haven’t a lot of time to organise every aspect of the travel plans, hire cars, equipment for kids and so on, have a look at the Aztec Holidays website, where EVERYTHING is do-able - including help with all aspects of your travel and your holiday to Cyprus. This includes foolproof maps and directions from the airport, detailed information about local activities, events, beaches and other places to explore. The houses are real ‘homes from home’ with a level of sophistication that no teenager can complain about! These are holidays where you don’t need to take a chance and everything is as it looks in the photos.

FOOD A break from seaside routine? With self-catering and catered options for large and small groups, the family-friendly resort of Morzine, just 90 minutes’ drive from Geneva airport, offers a surprisingly wide variety of activities. The Office de Tourisme de Morzine joins with its higher neighbour Avoriaz, to bring you the best of summer mountain holidays. The number of visitors to mountain resorts is increasing annually and Morzine offers families more than most: it holds the acclaimed ‘FamillePlus’ accreditation. From the 1Euro per day mountain lift pass (‘Multi-Pass’), to the dedicated mountain bike tracks (and lift service), the mountains of Morzine offer walks and rides in abundance. Morzine organises festival weeks for children and families in summer and its swimming pools, tennis courts, ice rinks and little tourist trains are included in the 1 Euro day pass! The summer-sled run, adventure park and mini golf are discounted for ‘Multi-Pass’ holders. A few special tips about Morzine: offer your little ones acrobatics and tree climbing instruction; give teenagers a challenge with the hair raising ‘death slide’ and teenage music evenings by night. See if they can walk as far as you can once you’ve mastered the art of ‘Afghan Breathing’, a breathing technique inspired by nomadic Afghan tribes. Hear the bells on the cows that provide the local Reblochon, Tomme and Abondance cheeses. And, if there’s space, stay at the Chilly Powder chalets, where the day’s rhythm keeps kids very happy with early teas and a dedicated space for them, giving parents a moment to talk to each other or to the other guests at the bar or round the fire.

Soft Play Centres LEATHERHEAD AND DORKING GYM CLUB The Gymnasium,

SOFT PLAY & TODDLER POOLS Soft play centres are invitingly warm places to spend a chilly morning or afternoon, watching our little ones explore, stretch and climb in safety - and usually with a cup of lovely coffee in our hands. They are great places to meet up with friends, too. Parental supervision is usually required, but in most cases this is quite easy as café areas are nearby. Soft play centres range in size, age or height group and equipment. Some have rules about keeping socks on (I have been advised that verrucas spread on dry floors, not wet, areas!) and most of them make great venues for birthday parties. Here we have brought together the up-to-date facts about local soft play centres that are open every day of the week (or almost). We wish you happy ‘new year soft play’! For girls from the age of 2-16

The visit by the Duchess of Gloucester to Micklefield School in Reigate ended a year-long programme of events to celebrate its centenary. The Duchess was given a tour of the school, taking time to talk to children in the Science Laboratory, the newly furnished computer suite and the Art Room. The Duchess chatted to the lower school in the playground, after which she cut the ribbon across the entrance to the recently installed ‘Trim Trail’, the new outdoor ‘fitness’ educational course funded by the Friends of Micklefield. To commemorate Micklefield’s 100th year The Duchess was invited to cut a celebratory cake, which incorporated the Micklefield School Shield.

Out and About WALKS and LOCAL CONSERVATION National Trust BOX HILL’S NATURAL PLAY TRAIL Work has started on Box Hill’s new natural play trail, part of a bigger project to re-do the National Trust’s Box Hill self-guided trails. The trail is a walk round the woods, with playful features added along the way to promote natural play for children. Box Hill volunteers have cleared scrub and trees to create a new entrance path for the play trail that twists and turns through the woods, over logs, under trees and through brash tunnels. Emerges at a honeycomb amphitheatre and start of the trail. The trails and features are designed with conservation in mind. Sarah Russell, Box Hill Learning Warden, would like families to see the progress “We are really enjoying creating these trails, and we hope you’ll enjoy playing and walking along them.” Parking at Box Hill costs £3 per day, free for NT members.
