Happy New Year! Life may be a struggle for many people at the moment – but I get the feeling that many are responding with resourcefulness, whether in starting up a new business or planning new ways to run local communities. We love to support all new initiatives run by parents so send us your news. Read about the Woldingham Playground and Transition Dorking – a group that is galvanizing local support to establish a community orchard, shared gardens and much more – see page 10. We’ve tried to balance the media frenzy about Caesarean births, see page 6, and would love to hear from mums about the information they received while pregnant about the pros and cons of Caesarean births. This new year issue brings an updated Local Nurseries Directory (pull out the centre pages, 11-14 to keep for reference) and great holiday ideas for bringing large families together on page 8-9. It includes a party with cartoon characters Kipper and Maisy, a chance to make a newspaper with a top journalist and to even meet a snake. For budding artists, Horrible Science illustrator Tony De Saulles will be running an exclusive workshop. He’ll teach children how to make cartoons look squishy, explosive, freaky, frightening and even smelly. Visit surreycc.gov.uk/childrensbookfestival or go to participating libraries to pick up a programme.

We liked this… Doodles for ever! For parents whose fridge door is covered with their children’s artistic endeavours, here’s an idea: Oodles of Doodles takes original artwork, from early paint swirls to collages to hand prints and more, and transforms it all into a composite, stunning and vibrant work of art, printed on canvas.

Cupcake Tea Party offers stressfree children’s parties. Gen brings everything you need and each guest decorates 5 cupcakes. Four go in a box to take home – leaving one to eat at the party! Every guest is shown how to pipe a swirl on a cupcake, then have a go themselves. Once that’s done, everyone enjoys a tea party with a real china tea set and delicious tea.

Celia Pontin invested in her own wide format printer after seeing variable results when she sent the artwork away to be printed. She can create montage designs using artwork supplied by you. Finished canvas prints cost from £55 and can be ordered at oodlesdoodles.co.uk.

Gen also makes cupcakes to order. Delivery within 10 miles is free of charge. You can contact Gen on 01293 401156. cupcaketeaparty.co.uk

Babies & Toddlers Should I have a Caesarean section? New guidelines on Caesarean section (CS) published by NICE in November contain several new and revised recommendations. Some media speculation has suggested that NICE is saying that all pregnant women should be offered the option of an elective CS – but this is clearly not what is intended by the amendments. The real importance of the changes is to stress the basic need for pregnant women to be able to get clear information about the pros and cons of CS and to air their fears about vaginal delivery. Nina Khazaezadeh, consultant midwife at St Thomas’ Hospital and guideline developer, said: “In my clinical practice I often come across women who request a planned CS due to perceived lack of control, fears

Belinda Phipps, Chief Executive of NCT, the UK’s largest charity for parents, said: “We are glad that this new guideline emphasises the need for good communication between women and health professionals, and does not suggest that Caesarean section should be offered as an option to all women. If Caesarean rates go up following the change to the guidelines, it will be evidence that women are not getting the quality of midwifery support they need to instil confidence and feelings of safety while giving birth.” of inadequate care provision and lack of support during labour and delivery. But, after a discussion of all the pros and cons of both types of birth, and having been assured one-to-one midwifery support and an individualised birth plan, they will choose to try for a vaginal birth. CS does mean a longer recovery time and a longer stay in hospital, at a time when women are keen to get their new baby home and start or resume family life.”

Can labour affect the metabolism? Attention has also been drawn to the possible metabolic differences in children born by elective Caesarean – where mothers did not go into labour. The work, done by a team of doctors and scientists at Imperial College London, suggests that fat metabolism may be affected where babies have not experienced normal labour. These findings highlight the need to be aware of all the pros and cons when discussing Caesarean sections with pregnant women.

Babies & Toddlers The Oxytocin Factor

A more speculative but interesting book has recently been published about the role of oxytocin (see article ‘Should I have a Caesarean section?’’ left) – which is released during labour – and its effect on the baby. Written by Professor Kerstin Uvnas Moberg of the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm, it outlines a more wide-ranging series of effects of childbirth without labour. Families

Family Gatherings Holidays are a great time to get the family together – but one size does not fit all. Here are some ideas for even the biggest family gatherings, in places that cater well for grandparents, parents, aunts, cousins and for babies and toddlers alike. Not many of us have homes large enough to accommodate all the family at one time – and even those who do will find it a relief to share the responsibility of it all! Getting away together as a family can work especially well if the accommodation allows some independence. Here are some great places – some quite close to Surrey to keep the travelling to a minimum - and two more for when proximity is not an issue. All of them offer plenty of space, beautiful locations, excellent accommodation and are suitable for extended families or smaller groups. The recommendations will provide perfect settings for family reunions, when the focus is on generous indoor spaces including great dining areas; those further away also have the appeal of a brilliant range of activities for all the family.

Outdoor Activities New Year, New Plans for Wildlife-friendly Gardening Remember wildlife when making your New Year’s resolutions for 2012! Wildlife conservation in gardens is becoming increasingly important as more and more species are becoming endangered. From budding town gardeners with limited outdoor space, to those with expansive lawns, New Year is a superb time to begin planning to provide homes for wildlife and make green spaces more wildlife-friendly. ‘We have seen gardeners become much more interested in the role their gardens have in helping wildlife,’ says Laura Brook, Sussex Wildlife Trust’s Conservation Officer. The Wildlife Trusts want everyone to join the Big Wildlife Garden Competition run by The Wildlife Trusts and the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). Anyone can enter their garden, patio or balcony – see bigwildlifegarden.org.uk

Laura’s suggestions for attracting wildlife: • Set up birdfeeders, nest boxes, ladybird lodges, and feed hedgehogs • For smaller urban gardens, roof terraces or balconies having a window-box with flowering plants such as lavender will attract hoverflies, bees and butterflies. Choose plants with the RHS ‘Perfect for Pollinators’ logo and avoid plants with double flowers as these may lack nectar or pollen. • For households with space, building a pond will provide a rich habitat to attract lots of different insects and animals. Making a pond with different depths will encourage a greater range of insects such as dragonflies and water beetles, as well as toads and frogs. Very shallow sloping edges Gardens are part of a network of mini wildlife havens that link up habitats across the UK. All are a vital source of shelter and food, especially in winter when many species need warm, dry spaces in which to bed down.

are important – this is where the largest variety of pond creatures is found. A pond is also the ideal place for birds to bathe. Taking action is simple and can often involve not doing things. So, resist pruning your more strikingly architectural perennials and let them provide a home for over-wintering insects. Leave rotting wood to decay in a pile and see if it becomes a home to beetles, fungi, centipedes and more. This kind of approach will reward you with many more garden visitors once spring arrives and sheltering creatures become more active again. Thanks to Sussex Wildlife Trust for this article.

Woldingham Playground Project The village of Woldingham has a playground located on land owned by registered charity Craigmyle Glebe Ltd. In 2008 two local mums, Julie Cornish and Denise Todd, were increasingly frustrated with the facilities available at their local play area. Since then, funding has been sought from a variety of sources and, by this summer, they were able to replace three condemned pieces. The effect on the local community has been fantastic and the new pieces were used well into the autumn! The playground now boasts a wonderful climbing frame, a very popular pod swing and a roundabout! The adventure trail has also been extended and the seesaw renewed.

Denise and Julie are hoping to install some more seating and provide better surfacing. They also need to raise about £6500 to replace the slide. Private donations and small grants from local organisations have helped so far and fund-raising events continue to play a large part. In most cases, the playground is not considered eligible for funding from larger, national organisations and many applications have been turned down. Do support Denise and Julie in their work! A group of local volunteers is creating an orchard, planting a potager, selling fresh food in the High Street, linking gardeners to gardens and more. The Dorking Community Orchard can provide a great way to teach kids about growing things! You can visit it at any time at the back St Martin’s Primary School in Ranmore Road, via the track to the left of the school. The orchard is behind the allotments, accessible on foot through a gate from a path to the left of the allotments. Through the production of local food, raising awareness and increasing skills of local people who wish to maintain their own fruit trees, the group contributes to building resilience in the Dorking Community. Families are invited to come and learn – and take part in our local orchard. For more about the project go to transitiondorking.org.uk For details of the community orchard add the following: /projects/dorkingcommunity-orchard/

Independent School Open Mornings for prospective parents SPRING TERM 2012

Cut Your Childcare Costs Nursery fees vary greatly, depending on location, demand and what is offered. They start at around £100 a week and go up to 4 times that, but there are ways to get help with the costs:  Nursery Education Grant - all 3 and 4 year olds are entitled to 15 hours of free early-education a week for 38 weeks of the year. This applies until they reach compulsory school age (the term following their fifth birthday), and can be applied flexibly over a minimum of three days. The grant can be used at a range of early years settings including nursery schools and classes, children’s centres, day nurseries, play groups and pre-schools and childminders. Your child will be eligible for the Nursery Education Grant from the term after their third birthday. If you choose a nursery that charges more than the funding or if you use the nursery for more than 15 hours per week you will need to pay the extra.

Senior School Open Days are now available on the website. Go to familiessurreyeast. co.uk and click on What’s On. Aberdour School, Burgh Heath KT20 6AJ Boys and girls, 2-13 yrs. Tel: for details on 01737 354119 aberdourschool.co.uk Wednesday, 14 March only takes about 10 minutes to sign up for a scheme, and with no claim forms it couldn’t be easier. If your company isn’t one of the thousands that are already running a childcare voucher scheme, why not ask them to consider it? With National Insurance savings on offer for employers too, and childcare voucher providers willing to handle all of the scheme’s administration, they should realise that it is a win win! Kiddivouchers are one of the providers of childcare vouchers. Employers, carers and parents can find out more at kiddivouchers.com See what the government has to say about childcare vouchers at hmrc.gov.uk/calcs/ ccin.htm. Check if your nursery will accept Childcare Vouchers.  Tax Credit Scheme You may be able to recoup some of your childcare costs through the tax credit scheme, depending on the number of hours you work and your household income. To find out if you are eligible go to payingforchildcare. org.uk or direct.gov.uk/en/ MoneyTaxAndBenefits/ TaxCredits

More Information  Childcare vouchers – Although some employers provide subsidised onsite childcare, all employers can offer Childcare Vouchers as a portion of your salary. Did you know that you could save hundreds of pounds each year, simply by paying your childcare provider with childcare vouchers? The vouchers can be provided by your employer, and parents can opt to receive childcare vouchers instead of part of their salary. As you don’t have to pay any tax or National Insurance on what you spend on childcare vouchers, you make savings. There are extra savings if two parents take part. Childcare vouchers can be used for a wide range of care, including nurseries, nannies, childminders, after-school care and holiday play-schemes, for children up to age 15. It
