Over 11 tonnes of CO2 saved in Mole Valley
Throughout autumn, the Surrey Waste Partnership is offering home composting bins at special low prices, from £14 (RRP £39).
Since June 2009, when the Council first introduced energy monitors to libraries, 128 monitors have been borrowed across Mole Valley. Customers typically saved 5-15% of their bill by using a monitor, or £25 to £75 off a £500 bill. This is a saving of 88 to 265 kilogrammes of carbon dioxide per household per year.
Add family waste to your compost: empty cereal packets and egg boxes; fruit scraps and vegetable peelings; tea bags and coffee grounds are all great ingredients.
The monitors can be borrowed free of charge from all local libraries. For more information or to borrow a monitor visit your local library or call 0300 200 1001.

The facility will replace the Horley Anderson Centre in Thornton Close. The design includes a 25m-long swimming pool, a fourcourt sports hall, a fitness suite and dance studio, a gym and wet and dry changing rooms. State-of-the art facilities for disabled users and energy-saving design will enhance the scheme. 4

RSPCA’s Great Big Rabbit Survey Rabbits are our third most popular pet, with around one million rabbits currently being kept in the UK. As part of the charity’s campaign to improve pet rabbit welfare the RSPCA is producing up-to-date advice on keeping rabbits happy and healthy and launching its biggest ever rabbit survey.
Whether it’s discussing the future of local hospitals, libraries or police stations; highlighting the priority services for you and your family; or suggesting ways you can support your community through volunteering, we are keen to hear your views. There are lots of ways to join the Surrey debate, so make sure you have your say. You can submit your views by email: haveyoursay@surreycc.gov.uk or via twitter: @surreymatters or call 03456 009 009.
RSPCA rescue centres care for thousands of rabbits every year. The new campaign aims to reduce the number of rabbits coming through its doors at rescue centres. The survey will be available to complete online at www.greatbigrabbitsurvey.org until the end of the year. Everyone who takes part in the survey will be able to download an exclusive RSPCA screensaver and be entered into a competition to win rabbit goodies including toys, grooming tools and a supply of bedding and food.

Did you know? WATER FACTS Studies have shown that pupils who were dehydrated during the school day suffered from a loss of concentration, headaches and tiredness. Our bodies are made up of about two-thirds water, and staying topped up helps keep them in good working order. That means adults and children over the age of eight need to drink about one and a half to two litres of water per day. For more facts visit Water UK at www.water.org.uk/home/water-for-health/medical-facts and the Water for Health Alliance www.waterforhealth.org.uk.

Baby’s Here – Who Does What? Having a baby is often said to bring couples closer – and sometimes it does. But in two out of three families it makes the parents’ relationship worse. And what do parents argue about the most? – ‘Who does what?!” The book ‘Baby’s Here – Who Does What?’ addresses the thorny issue of who earns, who cares for the baby and who keeps the house. Many mums feel they have an unfair burden caring for children and managing everything at home. Many mums and dads feel that dads do not spend enough time with their children. It is no longer simply an issue of dad going back to work and mum deciding whether to work or not. The biggest issue that new parents fall out about, by far, is who does what.

Don’t end up with one parent doing all the caring and the other doing all the earning unless you really cannot avoid it.
Make time for each other and do things you used to do before you had children. A happy couple relationship means happier children.
Both spend time alone with your baby. Both become competent and confident with him/her, learn and appreciate your different parenting styles - your child will.
Don’t feel guilty about working – nearly all mothers and fathers for all of human history have had to work. Try to organize work so that one of you is looking after the baby as much as possible; babies have always been looked after by several people.
Mothers: put yourself first sometimes Page
(and fathers – let them do this). Mothers who make the children such a big part of their lives that everything else is forgotten often become depressed.
If moving house could mean a smaller mortgage or more involved grandparents, think hard about it.
Fathers: move mountains to get flexible work, even if it gives you only a few extra hours with your baby every week.
Each agree to do the one task around the house that the other likes least. If you can afford it, pay for some of the tasks to be done for you.
Talk and listen. Don’t just barge into the role you think is yours – find out if your partner is happy with what your choice means for them. Do they feel put-upon or pushed out by you? Things will then feel fairer, you will be more loving and less stressed – which will also be good for your sex life.

Local HOLIDAYS News
Skiing step by step
For those of us with children at school, this is the term that seems so long – and by the end of November many of us will have tired little children, catching colds and in need of a boost! THE FIRST STEP Whether you plan a holiday this winter or not, a great way to have some fun, fresh air and warm up for a winter break is to dip your toe in at Bowles Outdoor Centre, where the whole family can learn to ski at weekend classes. There are beginners’ slopes and more advanced, faster and longer slopes, so the whole family is catered for and tuition is by experts. Open classes are available at other times, too. Whether you want to ski or snowboard, Bowles can provide tuition. It hosts a disabled ski club, too, and offers special lessons and equipment where needed at no extra cost. It’s a great recreation in a lovely setting, wonderful exercise and, if you are going on a skiing holiday, will let you spend more time in the mountains than on the nursery slopes! Bowles is a ski and outdoor education centre only fifteen minutes from the Surrey border on the A26 near Tunbridge Wells. Once you are ready to take the plunge and go skiing, it’s worth finding the right type of resort and facilities to suit your family. It’s definitely worth asking about the provision of baby- and child-friendly equipment to make you at ease on your well-earned holiday.
THE SECOND STEP We can recommend two very different types of resort. For families just starting to ski and with young ones in tow, you may be looking for a quiet, rustic holiday, with a mixture of skiing and other activities including adventure parks and go-karting. A local mum has just set up ‘bookingsforyou’ near Lake Maggiore in Italy, with a small selection of 1-3 bedroom chalets available, including her own. Some of the chalets are neighbouring, which is great for multiple family groups. Jo knows the area very well and her priority has been to provide everything a young family needs during their stay. Her own villas have stroller, highchair, bed rail, travel cot, toys, games, childrens DVDs, UK satellite (with CBeebies!!), children’s cutlery, baby monitor, bibs etc all on hand for guests to use free of charge. For those with older
children there is plenty for them to do indoors with wii and xbox games consoles, board games and toys. The skiing is not expensive and offers a good mix of nursery and more challenging slopes. For young children just learning to ski, a small local slope offers ski hire from 7 euros and sledges for 3 euros. Half-day passes are 11 euros (8E for a child) and <5s go free – a lovely bonus!
THE ULTIMATE STEP Morzine, just over an hour from Geneva, is home to Chilly Powder, which offers three luxurious catered chalets with skiing right to the door, saving a lot of time on courtesy buses. Amongst other things, owners Paul and Francesca provide a crèche with English nannies, early tea for children and after-ski entertainment for them, leaving parents to enjoy a rest after a hard day skiing! The chalets are very family friendly and the food is excellent – skiing at Chilly Powder comes highly recommended; book early if you need to go during the school holidays!

Christmas Counting down to Christmas organisation! ‘Tis the season of good will but with so much to remember and get done in the run up to Christmas, it can be hard not to use up all your festive spirit. However, with our top tips you can approach the big day knowing that you’ve got all those loose ends beautifully wrapped up! • Make a plan including Christmas card lists (highlighting any for overseas that will need to go early), present list suggestions with budgets and food shopping. • Keep an eye on posting dates - Royal Mail dates are: Standard parcel Wednesday 15th December 2nd class Saturday 18th December 1st class Tuesday 21 December • Plan your food shopping and add Christmas foods with a long shelf life to your weekly shop, that way you’ll spread the cost and the shopping load. Also, if you’re planning to do a lot of entertaining, get some ‘ready meals’ in for the days when you haven’t got guests - after all, you deserve a break too! • Have a pre-xmas clear out to make room for all the new goodies that Father Christmas is bringing. Ebaying or car booting anything worth selling will also contribute towards the Christmas finances.
• Keep an eye on Christmas socializing and make sure you write down all the family’s commitments so everyone knows where they need to be and you don’t double book yourself. • Take the hassle out of present wrapping by recycling old boxes to package any awkward shaped presents. Also, invest in a Cellotape dispenser (invaluable for saving time and Cellotape!) • Don’t forget to buy batteries - you may remember to buy the batteries for children’s toys but aunties, uncles and grandparents may not, so keep a selection on hand. • Keep a little stock of presents for those unexpected guests - Soaps or nice choccies are a safe bet and if you don’t give them at Christmas, you can always use them for birthdays or dinner party presents. Thanks to Rebecca Morris, of Organized Mum, for these handy pre-Christmas tip. Health
CRANIAL OSTEOPATHY EXPLAINED By Julian Batcheler
For babies with colic and other digestive problems and to improve sleep
Osteopathy is a holistic therapy which not only seeks to relieve the pain a person is suffering, but strives to understand and treat the causes too, with the aim of making the problem go away for good. The core belief is that good health is achieved when the body is working as well as it can in mechanical terms. Not simply the spine, but the whole body. Osteopathy uses a variety of hands-on techniques to treat people. Cranial osteopathy is really a set of techniques rather than a separate area within osteopathy. Cranial osteopathy is very gentle and works on a similar principle to osteopathy in general, but is more specific; health and wellbeing are achieved when the 29 bones which are in and form the head are all working together in harmony, then spinal fluids can flow as they are meant to and we can achieve a balance of health and wellbeing. Anyone of any age can benefit from osteopathy, but babies are especially amenable to treatment using cranial osteopathy. This is because the bones that make up the skull are not fused together, therefore we can feel small movements between them. Cranial techniques are especially effective for the treatment of the symptoms of colic and other digestive problems in babies. It is also helpful in gently adjusting the shape of a baby’s head if it was misshaped at birth due to ventouse or Caesarean birth. In general it often calms down babies who have had trouble sleeping, helping them and their parents to get a decent amount of sleep.

When I see a baby for treatment we start with a discussion of how pregnancy, labour and birth went and how the baby was delivered. We then discuss how baby is sleeping and feeding and any problems. This is then followed by treatment using a variety of techniques, including cranial osteopathy. I usually expect to see a baby at least twice, sometimes once is all that is needed, equally sometimes more treatments are necessary. I also show parents how they can massage their own babies tummy to help the baby digest. I charge £38 for all treatments, a consultation and treatment is between 40 minutes and an hour. Child Development
FUTURE MINDS
children - even from the design of a buggy, where toddlers now face front where they used to have eye contact with their parent as they were pushed along.
Will the digital age make them different?
T
These subtle changes continue into childhood, when too-busy parents use the TV or games console or computer as surrogate childcare. At meal times, we do not sit down together and talk about the day; we use text messages and emails to communicate the basic information, but do not spend the time to talk and think.
eenagers (or Screenagers) who have grown up in the digital age are already thinking and doing in a markedly different way - reading at incredible speeds; multitasking with ease; absorbing huge amounts of information all the time. But they are also skittish, restless in the way they complete tasks, unable to apply deep or sustained thought, and becoming less creative. So what will happen to today’s toddlers?
Change continues in the workplace and in shops, where increasingly we shop online or by using computer screens that remove the human contact from the process of shopping and banking.
Advice from the author
The good thing, according to Richard, is that all this technology means “We are getting better at thinking faster. We can make very quick decisions and we are getting increasingly adept at finding relevant information to support those decisions.” “The bad stuff,” he said, “is that I think we are losing the bigger picture; the ability to concentrate; to focus, to reflect and to do what I call deep thinking, which I think is the heart of scientific and artistic creativity.” Parents, fearful of the possible dangers of free play outdoors, in the local park or woods, effectively encourage children to stay indoors. This leads to children spending more time in front of a screen of some sort, engaged in activities which are bounds by sets of parental rules - and lacking the sort of free time that most of us experienced as children – time to relax, experiment, make mistakes, challenge ourselves, fantasise – and generally ‘muck about’ with friends. Today's generation, taking entertainment from the TV or a computer game have less freedom in this respect. My absolute critical point, he added, “is the fact that we have created this stuff which is fabulous on one level, but it has the potential to destroy the things which we value the most and that is human relationships and our sense of self.”

Our digital devices are getting in the way, both of this downtime and of proper interaction between parents and children. We need to consciously re-build family life by becoming more aware of how technology is altering our lives by altering our minds.
ard
Richard Watson, author of the recently published book, Future Minds, claims that the really important part of the mind – the one we should most look after - is creativity. We need downtime for our natural creativity to emerge and we need to literally ‘switch off’, in order to allow creativity and ‘deep thinking’ to emerge.
w
What will our children’s generation be like when they are grown up? As parents we carry enormous responsibility for our young sons and daughters and yet the influences from the rising tide of technology are strong and may be making their minds work differently.

Nurseries
Choosing a nursery for your child Nick Tappin, Registrar of Hazelwood School and The Larks Nursery, supports the idea of choosing a nursery that offers the opportunity to stay within the same school for primary/ prep school ages. Choosing the right nursery for your child isn’t just about the early years of their childcare and education. It shouldn’t be about convenience and opening hours. It is one of the most important choices you will make for the rest of their life. You will be looking for a safe and secure environment with a balanced approach to care and learning, staffed by practitioners who can become inspiring role models for your child before they move up to Reception and ‘proper school’.
Then there are the friendships, which you make for life. Friendships that give you the self confidence, and the desire, to take part in class activities on your own or as part of a team. And in later years to assume positions of responsibility and leadership in the classroom and on the sports field. The closest friendships are those forged from the earliest of ages. Being around older children too has an important part to play. To have role models within easy reach motivates and inspires.
By selecting a nursery that is part of a family of educational excellence from three months to thirteen years a nursery extends its influence beyond the early years. It becomes a place where your child can make friends and build relationships that grow with them as they grow in confidence throughout their education, not an education of continual change and upheaval. There is the sense of belonging and familiarity that comes from being amongst the same core group of staff and teachers. They get to know you well, are able to tailor specific programmes of learning to suit your individual needs, able to know when you need a little more help with a challenging task or when you need to be stretched a little more. A teacher’s understanding is passed from colleague to colleague as your child progresses through the school. As a child, you know and trust them, feeling secure in their care and guidance.
Progressing through the ages and stages of education, through the Early Years Foundation Stage (including Nursery), from Infant into Junior and into middle schooling, within the same school and family, is not daunting or unsettling. The result is a self-assured and confident child who is prepared for the challenges that present themselves at senior school,
capable of success and achievement and likely to fulfil their true potential. So, give serious consideration to a nursery place that offers you and your child this continuity of care and curriculum, even though it may not be the most local nor the most convenient. The extra few minutes in the car, the earlier alarm clock call will be more than repaid by the years of supportive learning your child will enjoy. With thanks to Nick Tappin, Registrar of Hazelwood School and The Larks, Oxted and to Lynn Weeks, Head of The Larks and Chestnut (Hazelwood Pre-Prep) for contributing this article. The Larks looks after children from aged 3 months up to their transfer at 4 years old into Reception at the Hazelwood site. There are strong links between the two sites with children, particularly of the Pre-Prep involved in joint music, drama and art projects.
