Local News CHILD-FRIENDLY DORKING

MOLE VALLEY SUN POWER

Young councillors from Junior Youth Voice have been asking shopkeepers and organisations to display a colourful sticker to show that they welcome young people. Junior Youth Voice is made up of youth councillors, aged 9 to 11, who represent primary schools across Mole Valley.

Mole Valley District Council agreed at a meeting in July to install solar electric panels on both Dorking and Leatherhead Leisure Centres.

The sticker was designed by 11yr old Rohan Mayo, a pupil at St Martin’s School, the winner of the Child-Friendly Sticker Competition. For more information about the project, contact the Community Development and Partnerships team at Mole Valley District Council on 01306 879356 or email partnerships@molevalley.gov.uk. You can view the sticker on the Council’s website, molevalley.gov.uk

Installing solar panels will reduce the Council’s carbon footprint by 30 tonnes per year and provide the equivalent power it would take to run 12 homes for a year! This investment will give a return of 6% annually, creating a revenue stream for the Council of £23,500 each year. The Council stands to receive £587,500 through the renewable energy Feed-In Tariff and reduced energy bills over 25 years. The solar panels located on the roofs of both sports centres will provide power for Dorking Halls and Leatherhead Leisure Centre.

WHAT A WASTE! In support of Surrey County Council’s Love Food, Hate Waste campaign, Families Surrey East is going to feature some great recipes on our website, familiessurreyeast.co.uk for keeping food waste down and using left-overs. Recent research indicates that Surrey residents produce about 83,000 tonnes of food waste every year with treatment and disposal costs in the region of £7.6 million. Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey campaign is encouraging people to throw away less food by providing helpful tips on how to plan your meals, perfect the portions, store correctly and use up leftovers. Education 1 in 5 bags of food shopping gets thrown away That’s not good for your pocket or the planet perfect portIons Weighing and measuring food is the best way to cook perfect portions. Through trial and error, you can work out just the right amount of food to cook for your family. Helpful tools include: Mug (300ml) - Handy for measuring uncooked rice. 1 adult portion = ¼ mug; 1 child portion = 2½ tbsp (as sizes of mugs vary, use these measures as a guide to see what works for you).

As food prices continue to rise around the world, it’s a sobering thought to know that many families waste up to £50 a month throwing away uneaten food. However we also know that cutting down on food waste can be a challenge, especially when you’re pushed for time and your kids don’t always want to eat what you’ve cooked for them. So to help you waste less, Surrey County Council’s Love Food Surrey campaign, provides helpful tips on how to plan your meals, perfect the right portions, store correctly and use up leftovers. Taking just one small step to reduce food waste can have a big positive effect on the environment and save you money too. We hope our tips will inspire you to take that step. It pays to plan Let your family help to plan the week’s meals. Before you do your next big shop, check what you have left, be creative and make a meal planner for the week so you only buy what you need. Visit www.lovefoodsurrey.com to download your free meal planner.

tablespoon - Good for measuring out portions of rice and beans. 1 adult portion = 4 spoonfuls 1 child portion = 2½ spoonfuls spaghetti measurer - Not sure how to measure pasta? You just fill up the measuring hole for the serving size you want with dry spaghetti; pasta can be measured with weighing scales. Weighing scales - A vital piece of kitchen equipment in helping to manage meal portion sizes. If you don’t have any scales to hand, weights are often given on food packaging to help aid perfect portions. store food properly Correct storage means your food will live extra days, weeks and even months. Place a fridge thermometer in the coldest part of the fridge and check the temperature regularly. Keep the fridge at a cool 1 - 5°C and chilled food will stay fresh for longer. can I freeze food after the ‘use by’ date? - You can freeze food up to its ‘use by’ date and then keep it frozen beyond the ‘use by’ date. Make sure you follow any instructions on packets, such as ’freeze on day of purchase’, ’cook from frozen’ or ’defrost thoroughly before use and use within 24 hours’.

the dIfference betWeen ‘use by’ and ‘best before’ dates use by - These dates are for safety and must be followed correctly; don’t use any food after the end of the ‘use by’ date, even if it looks and smells fine. This is because using it after this date could put your health at risk. best before - These dates refer to quality not to food safety; foods with a ‘best before’ date should be safe to eat after this date (except for eggs), but they may no longer be at their best. sell by/display until - These dates are for shop staff not shoppers, so can be ignored. lovely leftovers If you’ve cooked too much, try to use the leftovers for another meal. To help, it might be worth keeping your fridge, freezer and cupboard stocked with basic food staples so you can rustle something up when you need to and use items up e.g. pasta, stock cubes, and bread. Children don’t always like what they’re given so having a range of food items at hand to make different meals is important to satisfy their taste buds and keep them interested in what they are eating. What a Waste Research indicates that Surrey residents produce about 83,000 tonnes of food waste every year with treatment and disposal costs in the region of £7.6 million. Just think about all the energy, water and packaging used in food production, transportation and storage, that goes to waste when we throw away good food. Making Surrey a better place

Babies and Toddlers Communicate with your baby through touch Touch is a vital element in the bonding between a parent and child and massage is one of the most intimate and fulfilling ways of nurturing. It will also give you greater confidence in handling your baby. Regular baby massage can encourage growth and development as it improves muscle coordination and flexibility. It assists circulation, so boosting the immune system. It helps digestion, easing wind constipation and colic. And, probably most importantly for new parents, it can promote relaxation and improve sleep patterns! But the rewards aren’t just physical: Baby Massage builds a relationship of love and trust and provides mental as well as physical stimulation for you both. It’s a great way for dads to spend quality time with their baby too.

Eat Yourself Well! As far as health is concerned women traditionally tend to put themselves bottom of the pack behind the kids, husband – and sometimes even the family pet. No matter what explains this behaviour – it may be cultural, or a maternal example changing the mindset to prioritising your own health can be difficult to contemplate. However, just like the logic behind the inflight instructions on a plane: ‘In case of emergency put your own oxygen mask on before coming to the aid of your children’ we need to have our own ‘oxygen mask’ on first when supporting our family’s health. Start by tackling those niggling symptoms you consider too minor to seek help for. How often are you ignoring digestive complaints, allergy symptoms, recurring colds/viruses,

Baby Massage comes naturally to most parents – you’re probably already doing a little at home without even realising it. It’s easy to incorporate into a bedtime routine and it’s fun, too. All you need is a towel and some oil. I recommend organic sunflower oil, but olive, sweet almond or grapeseed oil will all do the job. Don’t be tempted to buy chemical products or blended oils – there’s really no need and some of them do more harm than good.

headaches, skin eruptions, irritability and fatigue? Getting these symptoms under control now may also lower your risk of developing long-term health problems in the future. A nutritional practitioner can help you get to the root of symptoms you may have. A few simple tips on choosing foods can also ensure a sound basis for your diet that can nudge your health in a positive way. Add these time saving nutritious items to your shopping list • Leafy greens (mixed bags of rocket, spinach, watercress or mixed lettuce) Add to a sandwich or throw some in a bowl with a few chopped peppers and tomatoes to accompany pasta. • Oat Cakes (find them in the cracker section) – keep these in your handbag and munch on them plain or spread with some hummus, cottage cheese or mashed banana.

Try and maintain eye contact with your baby and incorporate some little rhymes and songs, such as “This Little Piggy” and “Round and Round the Garden” to engage them and make it more fun. Massage with oil is even more cleansing than a bath, and it’s easy to slide an oily little finger into all the hard to reach creases, such as under the chin, so you may want to substitute the odd bath for a massage, especially if your baby has dry skin. Baby Massage classes can be a lovely way to learn baby massage techniques; they are also a great way of meeting other new parents and building up that vital support network. Sandie Kirk has been teaching mothers to massage their babies for 8 years. She also works as a reflexologist specialising in infertility and pregnancy. If you are interested in joining Sandie Kirk’s Baby Massage classes in Caterham, Surrey, contact her on 01883 371971 or see her website: reflexologycaterham.co.uk • Frozen berries – keep in the freezer and add a few to your cereal or natural ‘bio’ yoghurt as a dessert or snack. The quickest way to enhance your current nutritional status is to try and eat as many different colours in one day (natural, not artificial) as you can. Start by aiming for some red and green every day... it’s a great game to play with the kids! Thanks to Nutritional Therapist, Ruth Crosby Dip PAR MBANT for providing this article. For further nutritional help and advice contact Ruth on 07802 761694 ruth@goodchoicenutrition. com goodchoicenutrition.com Ed’s Note: the new Surrey-wide initiative to increase healthy options for families eating out, Eat Out, Eat Well focuses on increasing the use of fruit, vegetables, and starchy carbohydrates, and decreasing fat, especially saturated fat, sugar and salt. It also recognizes the provision of healthy options for children. Members of the public can nominate a catering business for an award. Go to surreycc.gov.uk/eatouteatwell

Caring for the young carers There are an estimated 12,000 young carers in Surrey: young people between the ages of 5-18yrs who carry a large amount of responsibility for looking after a family member. Many young people don’t even see themselves as carers and many families do not come forward to access help. But young children who have to spend much of their own time looking after the needs of other family members often lose out on a social life and opportunities. The responsibility they take on and the time spent on caring tasks can also impact on their education. Surrey Young Carers has been supporting young carers across Surrey since 1996. They offer a series of seven weekly sessions with others in a similar position to help them get to know other carers and learn how to deal with their situations. Regular workshops offer a special focus on issues such as stress, autism, alcohol abuse, disablement or illnesses that parents or siblings may be experiencing. Young carers can also take advantage of twice yearly fun days, when they meet as a large group just to enjoy a day out, away from their responsibilities.

Young carers do amazing things in supporting members of their family but we want to make sure that they camn have a life of their own too. Jane Thornton, CEO, Surrey Young Carers

Young carers are children and young people under 18

who look after a family member(this could be a parent, sibling or grandparent or another relative) who has a disability, mental health problems, a long term illness or is using drugs or alcohol. Tasks undertaken by young carers are varied and range from caring, supporting or supervising. They could include emotionally supporting a parent, administering medication, dealing with financial matters, domestic chores, supervising a sibling, all requiring significant responsibility from a young person and impact significantly on their childhood and education.

Surrey Young Carers can provide help and advice to families and contact relevant agencies to give added support. Education Advisers can go into schools to address all pupils about the issues young carers face, or they can help individuals, for example in their transition to secondary school.

I feel a whole lot better now... things seem “ to be improving at school and at home... ” before I went to Young Carers I thought I “ was the only one – now I know I’m not! ”

Chilly Powder in Morzine

Joring (meaning ski driving in Norwegian) refers to anyone being pulled along on skis by horses, dogs or vehicle. It is the perfect way to explore the great outdoors in a completely new and different way. The Cairngorms National Park is the first place in the UK to offer this amazing sport . The Cairngorms are Britain’s highest mountain range and offer a host of snow activities – skiing, snowboarding, sledging, Nordic skiing, snow shoeing and climbing. In the Cairngorms reindeer roam freely in the hills; some of the very best whiskies in the world warm you after a cold day and kids are well catered for.

Visit the Cairngorms website: visitcairngorms.com rothiemurchus.net Pine Bank Chalets, Aviemore PH22 1PX Tel: 01479 810000 pinebankchalets.co.uk Chilly Powder: ski-morzine.com chillypowder.com

Pine Bank log cabins at Aviemore, close to the Rothiemurchus Estate and Loch an Eilein offer warmth and privacy – and are suitable for groups of friends or extended families, each Ski joring in the with their own space and reasonably priced. Cairngorms Kids have great fun in Morzine, too, just 75 km from Geneva airport or 9 hours drive from Calais. Family-friendly Morzine has been awarded the ‘Famille Plus’ badge. Paul and Francesca Eyre moved to Morzine 18 years ago and started a family and their ski company, Chilly Powder, there. Catering for families in Au Coin du Feu, there is a crèche and nursery, help with ski school arrangements, early tea for little ones and lots of helpful local information available. They also have two self-catering chalets available – luxurious yet at reasonable prices!

Clubs & Classes

pull-out section

Those earliest activities with our babies - and the clubs and classes we

ferry our kids to as they get older - are an important influence on our children’s lives. Not only do these activities help the brain develop, they also encourage sociability. They are important for development of strong bones and muscles and maintaining healthy weight too. This year the Department of Health has issued physical activity guidelines for the under 5s. They state that pre-school children who are capable of walking unaided should be physically active daily for at least 180minutes (3hrs) spread throughout the day. The average for today’s children in the UK is 120-150 minutes – so we have some catching up to do! This Directory of Clubs and Classes has been updated for 2011-2012. Some classes need to be booked; some are term time only. Start dates vary: some begin at the start of the school term and take a break at half-term. Many offer free trials – so ask about that when you call. And mention that you saw their details in Families Surrey East!

MARTIAL ARTS – More than just a sport Martial Arts is a system of disciplined combat that developed in the Far East and which involves spiritual as well as physical development. It might include Kickboxing, Kung Fu, Karate, Aikido and many smaller systems that are related. Throughout the UK there are now many highly qualified instructors taking children as young as 4yrs, focussing on developing a set of life skills and values that include respect for others, concentration and focus, listening skills, personal safety and self confidence. Many parents will welcome the skills and training of martial arts instructors for their children – whether it is for burning off large amounts of energy, curbing anger, instilling discipline and better behaviour or for becoming fit. If you are looking for a martial arts class for your child, use the list of highly qualified instructors on this page. Ask questions about a teacher’s qualification, level of experience and grade achieved. Different schools might apply different belt colours and terminology, or use a different teaching curriculum, but by looking at the conduct of a class and gauging the level of respect the teacher enjoys you will already have a lot of information to go by. The UK enters into World Championships and many instructors have experience at championship level. Master Page, the founder of GBMAA (GB Martial Arts Association) - with a series of schools, including one in Leatherhead and another in Epsom, is three times World Champion. The GBMAA, starting with their ‘Li’l Dragons’ programme at age 4yrs, instils respect, concentration and discipline as the core of its teaching. All martial arts programmes channel energy and establish a mental process for dealing with problems. Instructors are role models – they are polite, well mannered, thoughtful and practice humility in what they do. The impact can be enormous: martial arts classes can help tackle everyday behavioural problems; also those stemming from such conditions as ADHD, dyspraxia and autism. Also available via some martial classes is a training programme to become an instructor. Some university students have even taught classes and earned money during their studies. In some ways, martial arts is like a philosophy that becomes a powerful part of your life. Your child may receive lessons in avoiding bullies, fire safety and other practical issues, but at the core, you may well see a difference in his or her own confidence, respect for others and an ability to deal with the difficult situations that life sometimes throws their way. With thanks to Saffron Power and the Great Britain Martial Arts Association (GBMAA) for providing the basis for this article. Saffron can be contacted on 075 84 47 37 84 or via email at saffron.power@gbmaa.com

EDUCATION Specialist I have helped many children to literacy by identifying their reading problems. Reading is key to successful learners and is too important to leave to chance.

“One in three pupils failed to achieve the expected level in the three Rs combined (reading, writing and mathematics) and one in ten boys leave primary school with a reading age of a seven year old” according to Nick Gibb, the Schools Minister, commenting on the recent SATS results. The Synthetic Phonics programme of ‘Letters and Sounds’ has been in schools since 2007 and is supported by the government. It aims to build children’s speaking, listening and reading skills by developing their phonic knowledge. Phonics are the sounds of letters which are then blended to make words. Nonetheless, some children are ‘falling through the net’. The obvious question is why? Historically it was the fashion to see boys and girls as one unit. Subsequent research shows that there is a gender difference: boys and girls learn in different ways.

education news Priory Preparatory School – Banstead Priory Preparatory School

My mantra for all learning has been ‘know your child’. Typically in any classroom children may use any of three ways of learning: visual, auditory or kinaesthetic (tactile). No one style is used exclusively. Each child may have a preferred learning style but a system that embraces all three works best. The majority of children learn to read quickly and efficiently by the phonic method particularly if the scheme is fun and has child-friendly graphics. For home learning a computer program that provides a lively pace to keep the child’s concentration is an advantage. Other resources such as books and songs add value to the reading experience. Children can learn at their own pace and parents can be involved too. A minority of children do not learn to read by Year 1 and they might need expert advice and teaching. Halloween Haunts

Out and About

A bit of history...

Fishers Farm Park

Newpound Lane, Wisborough Green W. Sussex RH14 0EG Tel: 01403 700063. fishersfarmpark.co.uk

Halloween, always on October 31, is a mixture of ancient Celtic practices and religious rituals, blended over centuries. A time of celebration and superstition, Halloween marks the end of autumn harvests and the beginning of winter darkness. Celts believed the moment of passing between these two phases enabled ghosts to return to earth. The Romans arrived in 43AD with their own celebrations; one was to honour Pomona, their Goddess of fruit and trees, suggesting a connection with apple-bobbing. In the 7th century Pope Boniface IV designated November 1 All Saints’ Day, a time to honour saints and martyrs. The celebration was also called All-hallows and the night before it, eventually, Halloween. In AD 1000, the church designated November 2 All Souls’ Day, a day to honour the dead.

Families Surrey East has compiled a list of fun ways to remember this history and to celebrate the dark nights. See our Days Out listings and Events Calendar for more half term and Halloween events.
