Local News Composting for a greener Christmas For the greenest way to deal with your extra Christmas food waste, composting is the perfect solution. Parsnip peelings, Brussels sprouts and left over satsuma peel can be used for making compost. Mix this in with used envelopes and Christmas cards to give a good balance of materials in your compost bin. Crumple the paper into a ball before adding to the heap and make sure it’s free from glitter, plastic and other non-paper embellishments. About a third of our household waste could be composted and save the county an estimated £11 million in waste treatment and disposal each year. Bus Stop Pre-School, Bookham Bus Stop Pre-School, Nursery and Forest School is a small, family run group, which has recently moved from Bookham to a great new location on the Polesden Lacey Estate, owned by the National Trust. Kate Rice has been running the Bus Stop Pre-school in Bookham since 2006. Since qualifying to run a Forest School at the beginning of 2012 Kate has introduced children to building dens, climbing trees, exploring nature and respecting the environment. Bus Stop at Polesden Lacey provides care and education to approximately 30 children aged between 0 and 5 years, either as morning or afternoon sessions or from 8am to 5.30pm with a breakfast and lunch club. Outdoor play is actively encouraged and children can play outside as much as they like. The Forest School ethos fits well with the National Trust’s ideals for the development of young children, including their campaign ’50 things to do before you are 11 ¾’.
Eco-Skating in the park The news that Shane Richie (Alfie in East Enders) is bringing a skating rink to Reigate’s Priory Park this winter (see page 8) is made even better because in choosing the rink, Shane and his company, Surrey Entertainments, have chosen an environmentally friendly rink to keep energy consumption low.

A rink with real ice would have consumed an extra £10,000 in energy costs. Skating in the Park, which will welcome skaters in Priory Park from Saturday, December 1st, offers the best synthetic ice skating surface available, composed of specially engineered polymers that permit a skate blade to glide as closely and smoothly as possible to real ice. The eco-friendly synthetic ice rink is made from a non-toxic, recyclable acrylic material. The ‘glide factor’ is only a little lower than real ice that has been newly resurfaced – then stays the same, with no deterioration! Local News Zapphire School of Dance launches in Redhill
Santa Fun Run Reigate and Redhill YMCA invites everyone to get in the Christmas spirit and come along to their annual Santa Fun Run on Sunday, 9th December. There will be both a threemile course for adults aged 16 years and over and a one-mile course open to anyone from the age of 5. The races stay on safe gravel paths and pavements around Reigate’s beautiful Priory Park, circuiting the picturesque lake. Entry costs £10 if booked in advance and includes a Santa suit, refreshments and medals for everyone who finishes the race. Entries on the day will be £15 and all money raised will go towards the YMCA’s vital ongoing work with children and young people in the local community. New Dorking cinema
A new 66-seat cinema with comfortable, extra-wide, tiered seats and digital surround sound, has just opened at the Dorking Halls (October 26). This means there are now three screens, providing a wider choice of films. Acoustics experts have been brought in to help create the best possible environment for enjoying the films. A new range of classes for children aged 2yrs and above is now available at Birchwood Community Hall, Tylehurst Drive, Hooley Lane in Earlswood. Fun and energetic classes in Creative Movement, Ballet, Street Dance, Musical Theatre, IDTA Freestyle, Zumba, as well as private singing lessons all take place at the hall.
Surrey Wheels for All Cycling Projects is a charity funded by Surrey County Council to make sure that disabled children and adults and their families can enjoy the thrill and fun of wheeled recreation. It has 30 bicycles with special design or adaptation to suit a variety of needs – for those with physical disabilities as well as challenging behaviour. From tricycles to quadcycles, there are also recumbants and hand-powered bikes. Matthew Wing runs the Surrey Wheels for All project and works with everyone from beginners to accomplished cyclists – and it’s his job to keep all the 30 bikes busy! Local News Anti-Bullying Week 19-23 November Every year Anti-Bullying Alliance (ABA) runs a national awareness-raising week – Anti-Bullying Week - to increase awareness of bullying and the damage it can cause to children and young people. Part of leading charity the National Children’s Bureau (NCB), ABA wants to ensure that the whole community – teachers, parents and children and young people, have the skills and knowledge to address bullying effectively.

Recycling soars In Tandridge Tandridge residents have responded to the new recycling and waste service – and increased their recycling by almost 20% after just one week of the new service. Food waste is being recycled into fertilizer and to create electricity; mixed recycling helps create new paper, cardboard products and new plastic containers. New Day Nursery for Caterham Valley
Redhill, Reigate & Horley branch of the NCT is thrilled to be starting a new Wednesday afternoon playgroup which complements its successful Bumps, Buggies and Bundles walking group. The play group, aimed at mobile babies, meets at Kids Unlimited Nursery on Cockshot Hill in Reigate on Wednesdays from 2.30 4.30pm. All are welcome and the cost is ÂŁ1 per family.
Rainbows Day Nursery is a new small & friendly nursery opening soon at White Knobs in Caterham White Knobs Way Caterham Valley. It benefits from a beautiful park setting, backed by woodlands. Already used in the past as a pre-school, the nursery is currently being refurbished and will offer high quality childcare for children from 1 to 5 years old. Open between 8am to 6pm Monday to Friday 51 weeks of the year, the nursery will provide a great solution especially for parents in full-time work. Parking is easy and the station is within walking distance.

Many rinks this year are wheelchair friendly and some offer penguin stabilisers for young children. Some venues offer a great day out – combining skating with Christmas shopping, great food, fairground fun and more. The larger rinks are made of ice; some others are synthetic, offering a more eco-friendly way to skate. The skate quality is equivalent to real ice after about 40 mins skating, as the synthetic rink surfaces don’t deteriorate. Some rinks offer lessons and ice guides – check the websites for more details. Skate hire is usually included in the skate price. And best to book before you go – though many rinks will have sessions bookable on the day.

CHRISTMAS Theatre and Dance combine From September 2012 Reigate Theatre Dance (previously Reigate School of Modern Theatre Dance) and Starlight Performing Arts united to offer dance, drama and singing classes in central Reigate.

PULL THE OTHER Theatre Company launches Pull the Other is a new and innovative youth theatre company based in Epsom. Following their successful inaugural TheatreLab at Epsom Playhouse in the summer, the company is launching a series of â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;workshop to stageâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; experiences, focussing on performance and staging techniques for budding actors and directors. DAYS OUT The British Wildlife Centre
on Eastbourne Road in Newchapel, Lingfield (RH7 6LF) is open daily over Christmas, from Thursday, 27 December to Sunday, 6 January, 10am to dusk. It has over 40 British animals from tiny harvest mice to magnificent red deer and including many types of owl! With keeper talks every half hour, children have a great opportunity to learn more about animals in the wild.

The Look Out Discovery Centre near Bracknell has a Christmas weekend on 8-9 December with a free childrenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s entertainer, festive art and craft actvities and a Christmas quiz.
