This multi-pack of labels contains snap on tags and vinyl labels giving you the advantage of vinyl waterproof labels for all your non-clothing items, two bag tags and snap on snappy tags etched with a name (and a phone number if you wish). Snappy tags have the added benefit of being removable and reusable. Other new lines include personalised luggage straps with security locks and sew-on labels with pre-sealed edges to stop fraying. Sign up online at www.labels4kids.com to get regular updates and offers right to your inbox. You can also ‘like’ the Labels4Kids facebook page for competitions and more offers.
Local Surrey resident Juliet Rees, from Haslemere, is currently writing a health book. One of the chapters covers infertility and whilst conducting the research for this chapter she has found out many things that help improve fertility. Juliet says ‘my intention is to help people. I want to help, I can help and I will help. The tears, suffering and devastation that so many people are going through is heartbreaking. Yet things are set to worsen, for by 2016 infertility is set to rise dramatically to affect 1 in 3 people! Infertility can affect anyone, even people who already have one child can suddenly realise that they have become infertile, in what is known as “secondary infertility”. Yet there is hope because there are simple things men and women can do to improve their fertility. The advice and information given on my website is absolutely free, so if you have been unable to conceive, or you know someone who is having difficulty, please tell them about my website’. See www.thetruth-about.co.uk.
Get children moving!
Distributor wanted!
Diddi dance recently conducted some research into adult's awareness of the amount of physical activity their child should be engaged in. Shockingly 93% of adults were completely unaware that children under the age of 5 should be physically active for at least 3 hours a day!
Families Surrey West is looking for distributors for the Godalming and West Guildford areas and also for the Cranleigh, Bramley, Shere and Holmbury St Mary areas.
Alysia Welch, who runs local Diddi Dance classes gives this advise to busy parents on getting their under 5 active: "Anything that means they're on their feet, walking when you might have put them in a buggy if it's a short journey (and you're not in a rush) or putting on their favourite song at home and having a boogie together. However not all parents have the confidence to act foolish at home or outdoors so finding a great local pre-school activity like Diddi Dance is perfect. Dance not only helps with fitness, co-ordination and rhythm it also helps with social skills, communication and interaction." To book your diddi one into a FREE trial Diddi Dance class in this area, contact Alysia on 07811 346482 or Alysia.welch@diddidance.com
The roles involve delivering the magazine to our distribution points in these areas. You would need to have a car and be able to commit about a day every other month. It is preferable if you live in the area you are distributing in. If you are interested and would like to earn a little extra money please call Sarah on 01737 558898 or email editor@ familiessurreywest.co.uk.

News and Views Time for a bargain Did you know you can furnish your home for less with great quality furniture from your local reuse charity? Your local furniture reuse showroom is a great place to buy quality furniture and kitchen appliances at bargain prices. The showrooms have everything you’ll need to furnish your home for less than you would pay on the high street – including sofas, dining sets, beds and children’s furniture. To help find new homes for the donated furniture and kitchen appliances, Surrey County Council works with the Surrey Reuse Network (SRN), which is made up of the local charities which run the showrooms and shops as well as giving support to their local communities.
Pin Point Tennis Team
The Body Shop are recruiting party planners
John Furey, Surrey County Council’s Cabinet Member for Transport, Highways and Environment, said: “Currently, around 4,500 tonnes of furniture which could still be used is thrown away in Surrey every year. So buying furniture and appliances from the SRN is not just an affordable way to give your home a facelift, it prevents items from being thrown away – which is good for the environment.”

Buying furniture from the SRN also means the network can support local families in need, and provide long-term unemployed and disadvantaged people in Surrey with volunteering and work placements. For locations, to arrange a collection and more information about the SRN, call 0800 082 0180 or visit www.surreyreusenetwork.org.uk.

Sacha set up her soft furnishing business in 2009 after attending a soft furnishing course at her local college. Since starting her business, people have enquired whether she would share her sewing skills/techniques and teach others to create soft furnishing projects. This is where ‘Sew Make’ began, Sacha has spent many months planning her courses, putting together guides and patterns for her classes. She feels it’s important for anyone attending her classes to leave, knowing they have the confidence and ability to reuse these skills. Whether it be sewing machine skills, making a cushion or learning the techniques to make a Roman Blind, Sacha hopes that those that have never even threaded a needle will have the confidence to give it a go. Sew Make courses run weekends/weekday evenings and workshops start from £30 which includes use of equipment, materials and refreshments. The courses are run from her workshop in Woking. For more information call Sacha on 07795067474 or visit www.SewMake.co.uk.

Divorce & Separation Separating - Advice on Dispute Resolution A marriage breakdown is one of the most traumatic life experiences that a couple can go through and is a time of real emotional conflict. If you are considering ending a marriage or civil partnership or have already separated from your spouse then you may have questions about how best to manage your separation and deal with all the tricky practicalities. For most couples, the difficult decisions are how to approach financial matters and any issues concerning children and how to separate amicably without the need for litigation. When deciding how to approach your financial matters you should remember that every couple and every family are different. For dispute resolution to be successful it is key to ensure that both parties feel comfortable within the process and feel that their interests are protected. There are several different methods to choose from ranging from simply agreeing matters yourselves (which may not be advisable as 50/50 is rarely the legal answer) to contested hearings in court. This article provides a summary of those options to help you choose which is likely to be most appropriate for you.
Mediation If both parties agree, a trained mediator, who acts impartially, will help guide them to a settlement. The mediator’s role is not to impose a decision or to judge the merits of the case but to simply help both sides reach an agreement without having to go to court.
Collaborative Law The couple will sign an agreement not to take their dispute to court. The collaborative lawyers are specially trained and will hold discussions face to face with both parties and solicitors present. If you are unable to reach agreement under this process your collaborative solicitor will not be able to represent you in court. They are therefore committed to trying to reach solutions by agreement not litigation.
Arbitration The parties sign an agreement to be bound by the arbitrator's ruling. The process is less formal than court proceedings, and therefore can be much quicker and less expensive. It can be tailored to suit the needs of the parties and recent case law shows that the arbitrator’s ruling will be upheld by the courts.
Negotiations via Solicitors This is the traditional approach whereby both parties instruct solicitors who will then seek disclosure of financial and other circumstances and enter into negotiations with the aim of settling out of court.
Regardless of the method you choose, it is imperative that once you have proposals from your spouse you take independent legal advice. You should also ensure that all documents are professionally drafted and that you have a solicitor acting for you who will ensure the agreement is in your best interests and that it is legally binding. For further advice on the above or any aspect of separation, please do not hesitate to contact Stephanie Greenhalgh on 01483 451900. Stephanie is a solicitor at Gordons Partnership LLP, a well established law firm based both in Guildford and London which offers a full service to clients. Their philosophy is to provide high quality and practical legal advice at an affordable rate, in an environment that is professional but also friendly and accessible. Their family team prides itself on its ability to offer practical advice on what may be complicated legal matters arising from a wide range of matrimonial and family issues. They cover all aspects of relationship breakdown, separation and divorce. For more information see www.Gordonsols.co.uk
Litigation in Court In the event one party is not willing to disclose financial information or if the parties are simply unable to reach agreement, litigation in court may be necessary. Whist usually a costly and lengthy process, for some couples it is the only remaining option to ensure that they receive a fair settlement.

Family Mediation – Keeping you out of court In some situations, where a child is at risk, or there has been domestic violence, a MIAMs will not be required, but in most cases you will now need to attend an appointment.
From April this year, the Government is due to enact the Children and Families Bill, making it compulsory to attend a Mediation Information and Assessment Meeting, known as a MIAMs, before an application can be submitted to the court for any family matter. So how does this affect you if you are going through a divorce or separation, or you want to resolve a dispute about contact with your children? The law changed for privately funded clients in April 2011, where people were expected to attend a MIAMs meeting prior to submission of a petition to the court. On enactment of the new bill, it will be compulsory for you to attend a MIAMs. This means you will need to see a specially trained family mediator. During the meeting, which lasts about an hour, the mediator will discuss your case and explain mediation to you before assessing whether your case is suitable for mediation.

MIAMs are free if you are eligible for legal aid, and cost from £98 to £300 for your meeting if you are a privately paying customer. It is recommended to shop around to find the best value in your area. At the conclusion of the meeting, the mediator can issue you with a form to show the court a MIAMs has been attended and mediation considered. So is this just another bureaucratic step and extra expense when going to court? Alistair Threadgold, Director of mediation at Surrey Mediation Service thinks not, “While mediation goes back to ancient Greek times, it is a relatively new concept in the UK. It is proven that mediation resolves conflict in less time, at less cost and for less stress than through the courts. At the moment we are achieving an 85% success rate through mediation. That means over 8 out of 10 cases we take on are saved from the expense and pressure of a court trial. The changes coming into effect just make it compulsory to consider mediation as a first step. That is all they are asking. It could save you an awful lot of time and money.” Alistair Threadgold Dip.M (B.Inst) F.inst. Pa is Director of Mediation at Surrey Mediation Service which has offices in Ripley and Wallington, Surrey. 0330 111 0824 www.surreymediationservice.co.uk

Mediation Myths: • Both of you do not have to be in the same room - the mediator can shuttle between rooms.
• Mediation is not relationship counselling. It is
about resolving issues as amicably as possible.
• It’s never too late to try mediation. You
can see a mediator even after you have instructed a solicitor or submitted a petition.
• You don’t have to be on good terms for
mediation to work. Both of you need to have the desire to resolve the situation.
• Mediation itself is still voluntary, but it will be compulsory to have considered it via a MIAMs.
Top 5 Tips for Resolving Disputes: • Keep calm and focus on what you want to
happen in the future, not what has happened in the past.
• Make sure you clearly state what you want and why.
• Work out the key issue the other party
wants, if you agree to their key point, they are more likely to compromise on other areas.
• Take time to consider the other person’s
viewpoint, even if you do not agree to it, it helps to understand it.
• Remember, if you can reach agreement, you have both won. There are no winners or losers through mediation.
Education & Work
Lessons for Grown Ups
By Linda Stone
Education isn’t just for the young To lead fulfilling lives, adults need to continue to grow and develop, learning new skills and enhancing existing ones. Adult education can help parents enhance employment prospects, indulge a passion, satisfy a budding interest or enhance the education of their children. Parents, Jacquie and Matt wanted to learn something new together. “We’d hardly done anything together since having children,” said Jacquie. “We were looking for something fun that would give us couple time too.” They opted for a Ballroom and Latin American Dance course at Molesey Adult Learning Centre. “In just 10 weeks we learnt the basic steps to the Waltz, Jive and Quick Step,” reports Matt. “Wendy, our tutor, is fantastic. Ballroom is really modern and fun – very unlike Come Dancing! Surrey Adult Learning has an amazing range of courses on offer at centres in Guildford, Farnham, Woking, Camberley, Esher, Molesey, Sunbury and Runnymede” reports Jacquie. Jenny has also taken a number of courses with Surrey Adult Learning, most recently a Greek language course. “Our family recently bought a holiday home in Crete,” she reports. “I realised that learning the language would be invaluable. The course was brilliant. Learning a new alphabet was challenging, but worth the effort in being able to speak the
language abroad. Our tutor injected fun into the classes and helped me gain confidence in conversation.” Overall, Jenny reports being “incredibly impressed” with the standard of teaching on Surrey Adult Learning courses. Adult education also provides vital resources for many local migrant parents. Rubina Bhatti’s Family Learning Course with Surrey Adult Learning literally changed her life and those of her children. “I learnt about the religious and cultural days and festivals celebrated here. I’d been here for 6 years, but I knew nothing of these. I also didn’t understand the education system or how to enter working life. Now I can talk to people about these topics.” When the Bhatti family began the course, Rubina’s youngest son, Sulaiman, had a speech difficulty and very low confidence. “When we started learning together, everybody noticed subtle changes in him,” reports Rubina.“To enhance his learning, I showed him the different websites our course teacher had shown me. Recently he got a Head Teacher Award for his phonics work! I also helped my middle son prepare for the test which got him a place at Reigate Grammar School. I’ve been able to help my kids succeed mainly through the knowledge and confidence I got from this course.“

Lyndie’s Story Could this be your next step in balancing work and home life? It was this time last year that Lyndie was first introduced to “Moms Making Six Figures” by her friend, Angie. She was living with her family in San Diego, California at the time and she was a stay at home Mum to her two children - Olivia and Nico. Lyndie says ‘with both children nearing school age I had started thinking about my “next step”. I was eager to find a way to return to the workplace, re-establish a career and a sense of independence but I also wanted to be able to do that whilst prioritising family time. I really wasn’t sure that such a possibility existed but am happy to say that one day my friend, Angie, shared with me how she had been able to do just that. One year later and I have a growing business Lyndie with Olivia and Nico in California and am now excited to be expanding back home in the UK. The most rewarding part has been helping other women do the same. If you would like to learn more please request information on our website. We would love to talk to you, learn about you and tell you about our organisation’. Visit momsmakingsixfigures.com or call Lyndie on 07932 553122.

Childcare
Choosing your childcare
C
hildcare costs are increasing – but it’s quality that matters the most for any parent. Joanna Moorhead looks at what option might suit you best. According to a recent survey from findababysitter. com, childcare costs are soaring – up by 19% over the last year. Every parent knows that what matters most about any sort of childcare is its quality – it’s vital that your child is safe, happy and in a stimulating environment while you’re at work – but the money matters too. So what are the factors you need to take into account when you’re choosing childcare in readiness for returning to work?
A nanny might suit you if... • You work irregular hours. That’s because you can pay a nanny to work the hours you work. • You have two or more children, or have one baby and hope to have another very soon, because you’ll pay your nanny for her time, not for the number of children she’s looking after. • You have quite rigorous ideas about, for example, the food you want your child to eat, and the schedule you want for his or her day. You can be a lot more prescriptive as a parent with a nanny than you can with a nursery or childminder, where your child will have to fit into a pre-existing schedule established by the institution or minder. • You like the idea of your child having lots of one-to-one care. • You’re a reasonably high earner – nannies can be expensive, though they’re a lot more affordable if you share them with another family. As well as basic pay, there are a lot of extras to be aware of when you employ a nanny – particularly her tax, which you are required to pay, but also car insurance if she’s driving your car, and the costs of any outings your child is taken on.

Children’s Day Nursery
• You have two or more children and would like them to see a lot of each other through the day, or you would like your child to socialise with other children that the childminder looks after. • You like the idea of another mother caring for your child – most childminders are mothers themselves.
A nursery might suit you if... • You have an only child or this is your youngest child and you are unlikely to have more in the near future – because a nursery will give him or her plenty of opportunities to play with other children. • Your child is not a small baby, and so may benefit particularly from the organised activities a nursery can offer and you want a wide variety of activities to keep your child busy. • You like the idea of a setting where events are regulated in a way that involves a lot of carers, rather than just one. • You don’t have any back up childcare as nurseries remain open most of the time so you don’t have to worry if your main carer is sick.
Surrey County Council’s Quality Improvement Award (QIA) is designed specifically for Early Years providers. The Award is a quality assurance scheme that can be joined by childminders, pre-schools and nurseries that are rated ‘good’ or ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted. The QIA seeks to improve the overall standard of care and the quality of Early Years settings. It requires providers to continually monitor, evaluate and improve on two key areas - Leadership & Business and Practice & Provision. The process includes regular training and teamwork, a review of policies and procedures, planning and self-assessment and a commitment to improvement by the entire team. Providers are then audited against a set of agreed standards to evaluate their progress, and must be maintained annually to retain their QIA status. The scheme goes beyond Ofsted and Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) requirements for demonstrating improvement. Bisley Pre-School, awarded ‘outstanding’ by Ofsted in 2011, is one local provider who has signed up to the council’s scheme. Linda Diovisalvi, Manager, believes the initiative is adding real value: “We’ve got a fantastic team who are passionate about quality and care. Working towards QIA is enabling us to think creatively, shaping our processes and practices, and we’re hoping it will give a real boost to the overall pre-school experience.” Bisley Pre-School invite prospective parents to arrange an informal tour to see the staff and children in action! Parents are advised to register on the waiting list as early as possible, especially for the forthcoming 2014/2015 intake. The pre-school attracts children from Bisley, West End, Knaphill, Pirbright and St Johns. To arrange a tour or for further information call 07855 194070 or visit www.bisleypre-school.org.uk

• From last year, Surrey County Council have been providing Free Early Education for Two year olds (up to 15 hours of free early education and childcare per week) for families who meet certain criteria. To be eligible you need to belong to one of the automatically funded groups (eg children with a disability or children with a high level of special educational needs) or to receive one of the particular benefits in the financial criteria. For specific details please see www.surreycc.gov.uk/feet. Kelly Lane launched Little Lanes Pre-School in Maybury last year to meet the need for funded 2 year olds places in the area. She says “research has shown children from some families were not at the same level in terms of speech & language and personal & social skills as the majority of children by the time they started school, so funding was given to provide free places for the 2 year olds who meet the specific criteria. We were one of the first settings to work with Surrey County Council to provide extra places for funded 2 year olds. From September 2014, more 2 year olds will be eligible for free places as the criteria are changing”. Please see www.surreycc.gov.uk for more details.

Classroom Futures Once upon a time every classroom had a large dusty blackboard and a teacher with chalky hands - but no longer. Catherine Williams, the Head of IT at St Nicholas’ School, Church Crookham explains why. Computers, the internet and the dawn of the digital age have changed almost everything about the way we live and work. Now it’s taking over in education and the classroom too. From preschool to infants right through to sixth form and universities new technology is giving teachers ever more advanced tools to deliver highly targeted learning for every individual child. It is delivering excellent outcomes too with the result that an increasing number of independent and maintained schools are rethinking the way they work. Paper and pencils are being replaced in some classes by iPad/tablet computers and Apple TV. Of course parents of even young toddlers will appreciate just how easily today’s children are able to pick up and use technology. And these days there are literally hundreds of apps, many of them educational, for children from the age of three. There are even “child friendly” tablets specifically designed for little ones too. In the classroom we’ve found that tablets are also incredibly versatile – it’s excellent with junior pupils and in a variety of teaching situations too. In art they can be used for drawing and in maths children can do a class test on the iPad with the results, all marked, for the teacher at the end of the session. The most obvious benefit to the pupils is it allows them to use their chosen learning style. Traditionally, classrooms have been very much a one-style fits all experience based around reading and writing. While these skills remain central to the teaching and learning experience what we’ve discovered is that some pupils are auditory learners and they’d rather listen and speak. Other people are kinesthetic/tactile learners and benefit from being able to move things about. Tablet devices allow them to do this.
Schools and Education Of course using this knowledge and the technology can have enormous benefits too for young people with learning difficulties like dyslexia or dyspraxia. There are excellent specialist applications available that are already being used by curriculum support teachers across the country and to great effect. As children progress through their school career, tablet technology can also be useful with homework. The pupil can take his/her tablet home and if it’s easier can create their essay or coursework by talking into it and printing it out rather than typing or writing it out in longhand. It also allows pupils to learn at their own speed and the benefit is that they and their teachers get instant feedback. This means that if the class have not grasped a concept the teacher can add an extra lesson if necessary. Alternatively if one child is struggling the teacher can offer additional one to one support through the device. However the real beauty of it is that for this and future generations technology is going to dictate their lives. They will be using computers at home and in the workplace and in ways that right now we can’t even imagine. For some this might seem like a vision of the future - investment in technology is expensive - but schools that have already made this step into the future are already seeing the benefits.
