Changes at PPA PPA kids has been running successfully for the last two years teaching children ballet, tap, modern, hip hop and musical theatre. However due to a demand in more children wanting a more professional structure, and the move to a brand new building PPA kids has had an exciting re-brand and structure changes. The school is now ‘’PPA Saturday School’’ so there is a continuation and affiliation with their very successful full time performing arts college which runs Monday to Friday. The children are now structured in age groups who are all following the same ISTD grades in ballet, tap, modern and hip hop. The sessions last between 2-4 hours which gives parents time to go shopping or spend time with siblings. Children can also take classes in Musical Theatre and one to one private coaching in singing and Trinity Acting exams. PPA Saturday school also has an affiliation with West End children’s agent Danica Pickett. The classes are now held in beautiful new studios in the heart of Guildford town centre. The studios are air conditioned with sprung flooring, mirrors and barres. Rachel and Louise are the directors of PPA college and PPA Saturday School and attend the Saturday school every week. Rachel and Louise have 4 children between them so understand the needs and concerns of parents! For more information email rachel@ppacademy.co.uk.

NEW HEAD SIGNALS BIRTH OF THE WEYFIELD WAY Weyfield Primary School in Guildford is now under the stewardship of recently appointed Head Teacher Mr. Wood. Mr. Wood formerly of Southwater Junior Academy an ‘outstanding’ school has one intention and that is to make Weyfield Primary School the school of choice for the surrounding area. What better way to achieve this feat than opening the summer term with a rock opera spearheaded by the harmonic tones of singer songwriter, Eleanor Duggan and her operatic trained mother. The stage wasn’t the only place inspiration could be found, the breathtaking experience continued as the children meandered through the Olympic themed main entrance that was dressed with union jack floor cushions, Olympic flames and various activities for the children to engage in. This ‘changing room’ approach continued into the twelve classrooms where children were welcomed with red buses, treadmills and rowing machines. This was met by loud cheers which echoed through the school corridors signaling the birth of the Weyfield Way.

Wild Learning holiday Club launches in Surrey Wild Learning is a new holiday club with a real difference: fantastic outdoor adventures from sites in Esher, Godalming, Reigate, Farnham and Dorking. Deep in the woods, in locations across Surrey, hidden woodland camps are growing. During the holidays you’ll find groups of children busily engaged in mud sculpturing, building dens or whittling; in the distance excited shouting shows that the shrimping expedition has had some success, while the muffled sounds of a stalking game filter through the trees. “They came back like something out of Swallows and Amazons!” said one delighted mother as her children returned from a day of adventure with Wild learning. The next Wild Learning holiday clubs run through the Summer holidays. See www.wild-learning.net or call 01483 424 400 for more details.

New Principal for Pauline Quirke Academy Tania Whatley has recently taken over as Principal of the Pauline Quirke Academy based at St Catherine’s School, Bramley, near Guildford. She also loves the stage and among other shows has been in Sunset Boulevard and was also the Narrator in Joseph.

Responding to these needs Guardians Are Us was established some years ago as a locally focussed guardianship organisation operating in west Surrey, but also serving parts of east Hampshire and north east Sussex. The Company only employs guardian families who live within these areas and only works with boarding schools within this same area. Students are typically between the ages of 13 and 18 and could come from any part of the world.

www.sportscoach.co.uk/guildford

The focus of the guardian families’ role is at the beginning and end of each term and possibly the Half Term holiday. Also there are possibly two exeat weekends in each term. The guardian family would also keep in regular contact with the student they are caring for throughout the term. Frequently a strong friendship will develop between the student and their guardian family which provides a rewarding and very enjoyable experience for both parties. If you are interested in finding out more about being a guardian call Diana Bott on 01276 66732 or visit www.guardiansareus.com.

Annette Joyce has had a passion for music and dance since an early age, working for the last 12 years as a fully qualified music and performing arts teacher in schools. Since the birth of her first child Jack, Annette has experienced the joy and sparkle of sharing music with her young child. She is delighted to be sharing her love of music and dance as well as her energy and enthusiasm for all things MAD with the children (and parents) of Woking by launching MAD Academy classes in the area!

Little Surrey Songbirds music classes for pre-schoolers from 3 months to 4 years has relaunched in Guildford under the leadership of Ruth Etches – musician and mummy of two. Classes run on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday mornings at 10am & 10.45am at the Millmead Centre in central Guildford (free parking available). Little Songbirds has been entertaining and inspiring little ones and their grown-ups for over 10 years and it has accrued a loyal and enthusiastic following! Classes provide a winning combination of counting, tickling and action songs, peek-a-boos, knee rides and dance-alongs. A mix of old and new songs each week keeps the classes fresh, whilst providing a familiar structure so important for early years development. The classes are brought to life with props and puppets and musical instruments for the children to play. Little Songbirds offers various payment options including “Pay-As-You-Go”. (No joining fee). For details and FREE trial session contact Ruth on 01483 283282 or email ruth@guildfordsongbirds.com.

Annette says ‘Kids, music and masses of movement – it’s a winning combination! Children love to be physical and let off steam. So it’s not surprising that in MAD Academy’s high energy music and movement classes, everyone, from babies to preschool children (and their parents!), get active and have fun. As well as funky songs, instruments, and musical games, classes are packed with specially choreographed dance routines and exciting props designed to develop motor skills. Our approach is energetic and free-spirited, which children relish – it’s like a party every week!’ For more information call Annette on 01252 517670 or visit the website at www.madacademy.com. Annette will be offering free taster classes in August – see page 6 for details.

New Dr Hilary Jones’ App takes the stress out of being a new mum – and boosts breast feeding Dr Hilary Jones, Britain’s best known media medic, aims to relieve the stress of early motherhood and boost breastfeeding with his new iPhone and iPad App, Your baby – 0-6 months. This “survival guide” for mums and newborns covers everything from diet and breastfeeding, through premature issues, early health problems, and crying – to the baby blues and postnatal depression. The new App, costing £1.49-£2.49, has 14 videos, including a step by step guide to successful breastfeeding and expressing. This follows Dr Hilary’s highly successful first App, Pregnancy and childbirth. Dr Hilary Jones said: “As a dad of five kids myself, I know just how very special and exciting it is looking after a newborn baby, but also how anxious it can make you feel and just what a responsible job it really is. My second app will answer most of those questions you really need to know when the chips are down, and there is no-one else around to help.” Dr Hilary Jones’ Apps are available via: www.drhilaryjones.co.uk or directly from the App Store. Priced at £1.49 for iPhone and £2.49 for iPad.

I WANTED TO GET BACK TO BASICS CHILDREN GETTING INVOLVED IN PERFORMING & BOOSTING THEIR CONFIDENCE THROUGH DRAMA In 2007 I founded my Academy of Performing Arts to re-create for new generations of children the happy times I experienced at the drama school I attended as a child. Since that time, many children have attended PQA classes in Comedy & Drama, Film & Television and Musical Theatre. At PQA they learn skills that are applicable not just to a career in performing arts but in everyday life too. It builds confidence by the bucket load, creates bonds, teaches respect, and even how to listen. At PQA children from the age of 4 to 18 years old can learn these skills in a safe, fun environment.

PQA Guildford is enrolling now at St. Catherines, Bramley, Guildford GU5 0DF Academies run on Saturdays from 10am until 1pm To enrol your child and further information, Please visit us at www.pqacademy.com or call us now on 084567 32022

Get composting Whether you’re a keen gardener or just want to choose the greenest, most natural way to deal with your food and garden waste, composting Involve your children too is the perfect solution. Grass cuttings, dried leaves, twigs and vegetable peelings are just some of the ingredients that can go into a compost bin or heap to make peat-free compost – ideal to use in potting or planting in your garden or allotment. Getting started is easy. All you need is a compost bin or a small space in the garden to create a heap. Then just follow our easy guide to creating your own supply of natural food for your garden. Get composting today – for a greener tomorrow.

Why compost?

Compost is a natural, nutrient-rich food product for your garden. It will help improve soil structure and maintain moisture levels, while helping to suppress plant disease. It will have everything your plants need including nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium and will help buffer soils that are very acidic or alkaline. Compost improves your soil’s condition and your plants and flowers will love it!

every school-aged child knows about reduce, reuse and recycle. Composting is a form of recycling you can do at home and reduces the amount of daily rubbish going into your kitchen bin.

Home-made compost is natural and peat-free, which means it’s good for the environment outside your garden too. It reduces the need to buy peat products, which have been commercially sourced and extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of the carbon stored in them.

Get started To find out more about

how to build yourself a compost heap, or to buy a bin, starting from only £15.00 visit www.surreywastepartnership.org.uk or call 0844 571 4444. You’ll also find lots of other helpful tips and information there too.

Recipe for success Right ingredients GReeNS Tea bags Coffee grounds Vegetable peelings Fruit scraps Salad Grass cuttings Old flowers Dead plants

BROWNS Dried leaves, twigs Toilet/kitchen roll tubes Scrunched-up or shredded paper Vacuum bag contents Wood chippings, straw Crushed egg shells Cereal/egg boxes

Wrong ingredients Cooked food Meat and bones Fish Dairy products Diseased plants Dog mess or cat litter Nappies

A step-by-step guide 1. Find the right site. Ideally site your bin or heap on bare soil. If space is limited, put your bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs, but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise. 2. Add the right ingredients. You will need a mixture of green and browns. Fill your kitchen caddy with the right ingredients such as tea bags, taking care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish. 3. Fill it up. Regularly empty your kitchen caddy and your garden waste into your bin or heap. Remember, a 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost. 4. Wait a while. Keep adding to your bin or heap and after 9-12 months the ingredients you have put in should have turned into a crumbly dark brown, earthy smelling material inside the bottom part of the bin or heap. 5. Collect the compost. Simply lift the bin off the compost or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost. Don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshells – this is perfectly normal. If preferred, return any material not quite ready back into your bin or heap. If you have built your own, simply rake out the ready compost. 6. Use it. Watch your garden bloom. Your compost can be used for all types of planting needs – mix with soil to replenish pots, dig in to enrich flowerbeds and vegetable patches, use as a mulch to help keep moisture in the soil or use it to feed your lawn.
