News and Views Not Long To GoFest!
Lovefitbetsy Comes To Woking
With just months to go until we hit the festival season, anticipation for GoFest 2015 continues to grow across the nation, as the family festival of sport, fitness, dance and health promises to deliver even more activities and entertainment than initially expected!
Expert pregnancy and post natal Personal Trainer, Elizabeth Kamm, is the founder of Lovefitbetsy and has recently moved to Woking. She offers 1:1 and small group training sessions to pregnant ladies and mums in the post natal period.
Launching for the first time this year at Surrey Sports Park on 10-12 July, GoFest presents a weekend of having a Go at a plethora of activities in various specialist zones with a sprinkle of live music and main stage entertainment throughout the day and into the night with performances from tribute bands Abba Revival and Take That 2. In addition to the existing zones, GoFest now proudly boasts a further three areas; GoSpike (volleyball), GoBat (cricket) and GoTumble (trampolining, gymnastics and cheerleading) and continues to confirm that one day at the festival just simply won’t be enough. Ever thought about taking part in a 1 mile family fun run? Or what about grabbing some friends and competing in a 5k race? With runs and races included in your entry into the festival, why not get sponsored and donate to their chosen charity, Finlay’s Fighters, or one of your own choice! And if that’s not enough, the GoFest Sportive offers keen cyclists the chance to take the scenic route around the roads of Guildford for a choice of 20 or 40 miles and cycle to your heart’s content. With so much being added to the festival, we can safely expect GoFest to be a welcoming affair, accommodating all ages and abilities with activities to try, enjoy and maintain beyond the festival weekend. Tickets are on sale now with prices starting at just £20 per child, £26 per adult and £79 for a family of five. So visit www.gofest.co.uk and get your family excited to join Kevin Keegan, Sharron Davies, Roger Black and the stars of Harlequins, Surrey Storm, Surrey Smashers and Surrey United at GoFest this summer!
Prior to Elizabeth and her family moving to the area, Lovefitbetsy was flourishing in South-west London. Her move to Woking coincided with the launch of her pregnancy fitness DVD – “Lovefitbetsy Pregnancy Fitness Workout” – which is currently challenging Davina McCall on Amazon! Knowing how to exercise and how far you can push yourself, can be challenging during pregnancy and after birth. Elizabeth’s specific expertise in this area ensures that clients are enfranchised to enjoy a vibrant workout within safe limits. Elizabeth’s practical workouts will help offset the common complaints of pregnancy such as back pain, nausea, fatigue, excessive weight gain and pelvic floor issues. The workouts also improve muscle tone, energy levels and stamina, ready for the birth and beyond. As well as offering expertise, her clients say that sessions are enjoyable and fun – something not always associated with an exercise session! Elizabeth visits you at home, so there is no need to travel. For more information, please contact Elizabeth on 07904 956362 or visit www.lovefitbetsy.com
Ensuring You Get The Right Support During Your Divorce Going through a divorce is extremely stressful and it is important to ensure that you are supported throughout the process. The following are options that should be considered to help with emotional needs: 1. Friends & Family It will be very important to talk to your family and friends during a divorce. They know you well and will understand your needs and are therefore in a good position to help you and provide support as and when you need it. 2. Colleagues Colleagues are the people that we often see the most of and so they can be a very beneficial source of advice and support. Colleagues will often be impartial and as such are well placed to encourage you to make decisions and to offer advice as and when you may need it. 3. Your GP You should advise your GP of your change of circumstance. GPs should be a source of support and will have the professional connections to direct you to the right people and organisations. 4. Relate counselling Relate offers counselling for both couples and individuals. They are able to assist with specific problems in a relationship and are there just to support you if that is what you need. They can assist you through your emotional struggle. 5. Your Lawyer Your lawyer will be very familiar with the divorce process and will be used to supporting clients through this difficult time. Mediation offers a good ground to enable the parties to resolve matters that they may not previously have been able to agree on. rhw Solicitors offer fixed fee mediation services as required. rhw’s Family Law Team can be contacted on 01483 302000 or family@rhw.co.uk.

Use your food waste caddy to turn pizza into power Did you know that using your food waste caddy helps turn fish bones into fertiliser, apple cores into energy and pizza crusts into power? In fact, if the 83,000 tonnes of food thrown away in Surrey each year was collected from caddies, it would generate enough electricity to power 10,000 homes for a year, and fertilise enough wheat to bake 16 million loaves of bread. All cooked and uncooked food waste can be put in your caddy, which is collected from every house in the county every week. The food waste is then transformed into green energy and fertiliser by anaerobic digestion. If food waste is thrown out with general waste it’s not only bad for the environment, it also costs Surrey taxpayers millions in waste disposal charges every year. To find out more, and for tips on how the average family could save up to £60 a month by throwing less food away, go to www.lovefoodsurrey.com

How You Can Spot Eye Cancer in a Child
1. Open the App Store on your smartphone.
Childhood Eye Cancer Trust (CHECT) has launched a campaign to show parents that they can detect the early signs of eye cancer in children and potentially save their lives by simply taking their photo.
2. Enter ‘MULTISPORTS’ in the search field and download.
Flash photography is one of the easiest ways to spot the early stages of retinoblastoma, an aggressive, deadly eye cancer affecting predominantly young children. A tumour in the eye can reflect back a white pupil in a photograph, so when a child with eye cancer has their photo taken with a smartphone or camera using a flash a white pupil can appear in the child’s eye in the image. The series of 4 posters, made using innovative reflective ink, show a close up shot of the eye of a real retinoblastoma survivor. People are invited to take a picture of the poster on their smartphones. The pupil of the child’s eye will appear bright white in the photo, in contrast to the seemingly healthy-looking eye in the poster. The posters will appear in GP offices, baby clinics and childcare centres. Fore more information see www.chect.org.uk.

Surrey-based Mum Scoops Finalist Spot at UK’s Most Prestigious Digital Awards Horsell-based full time mum Sarah Roberts has been named one of ten individual finalists in the Most Innovative category for the UK Blog Awards for her blog, ‘Don’t Be Sorry’. Sarah started writing her blog after she had her first son, Oscar, who has Down syndrome. “I found writing things down helped me. It became a diary of sorts and I found it helped me rationalise things in my head... I never really had any intention of publishing it. The blog for me has only ever been about educating people in the misconceptions they might have had about Down syndrome in the past. Life isn't over or sad because I have Oscar. On the contrary, I'd say it's been made because of him.” ‘Don’t Be Sorry’ will now face an expert panel of judges to determine whether it will scoop the overall title of Most Innovative Individual Blog winner at the awards on Friday 17 April.

Baby Play is Not Just for Fun
W
By Lynne Murray
hilst playing with your baby can be fun, it is not at all trivial. It is one of the main ways in which babies engage with other people, and a fundamental means of developing their social understanding.
sometimes feel as if their baby has now become a ‘real’ person, and play can become easier and more satisfying. This more connected phase culminates in the development of genuinely co-operative behaviour and more mature social understanding from around eighteen months, when babies can appreciate that other people have different experiences from their own, as well as different likes and dislikes. These developments are assisted when parents engage in pretend play, which can support the baby in thinking about the experience of, say, doll characters. Talking about people’s experiences and their feelings, and the reasons for them, either during play or during activities such as sharing picture books, are also important ways for parents to support the growing social understanding of their baby.
How babies play, and the way in which parents can support their play, changes dramatically during their first two years of life. Babies generally become playful from around six weeks, when they start to smile, vocalise and show deliberate facial movements and expressions. Parents typically find themselves imitating these baby signals, or reacting to them with stereotyped, exaggerated expressions called ‘marking’. These responses are largely automatic, and they help the baby maintain his positive mood and stay engaged. These early exchanges are like ‘conversations,’ and they are a very basic way for babies to sense the connection between their experience and that of someone else - one of the basic building blocks of social understanding. By around four or five months, a baby’s vision has improved and he or she can focus on things at a distance, and also start to reach out and grab things. These developments mean that a baby’s interests expand, and the previous, purely social, face-toface play loses its attraction. This can be disconcerting for parents, as they search for new strategies with which to engage their baby.

This is a stage when body games, like ‘pat-a-cake,’ or ‘round and round the garden’ come into their own. Babies quickly become familiar with the different steps of such games, and most of their pleasure comes from the sense of anticipation and climax. These games, and supporting babies play with toys, represent a new form of social relating for the baby - one where play is about a ‘topic’ that baby and parent share together. Although babies and parents enjoy these body games and toy play, they

Babies & Toddlers Talk, Talk, Talk To Give Your Child The Best Start
A
By Zara Humphry
s parents, you are the first and foremost source of your child’s speech and language development.
Studies show that children who are frequently read and spoken to during early childhood will have larger vocabularies and better grammar than those who do not have these experiences. Vocabulary levels are a strong predictor of later literacy skills. Help your child to get the best start by exposing them to a large range of vocabulary and language models through everyday routines, life experiences, playing, and books. Learning language is fun and can easily fit in with the busy lives that we lead. So to powerfully impact with your child talk, talk, talk...
Top tips when talking with your child »»Get down to your child’s level.
Engage their attention first before speaking. Young children find it difficult to listen and do activities at the same time. Saying their name first encourages them to listen. If you have any concerns regarding your child’s hearing get it tested.
»»Make sure your child can easily
see you. Being able to see you facilitates eye contact, a shared focus and means they can also pick up on facial expressions, lip patterns and other important nonverbal information. These all form a large part of communication.
»»Let your child choose the toy
and how it is used. By decreasing directiveness as a parent, it can increase your child’s attention and focus of play. It also allows for experimentation and learning. Use everyday routines (e.g. story time, bath time, going to the shops etc.) as opportunities to hear language repeatedly and ensure new language is used in a variety of situations.
»»Choose a language level close to
your child’s. Don’t go with where you think their age group should be. If your child isn’t using words then use single words/short phrases.
»»Use non-verbal communication. For example natural gestures support language understanding and act as a bridge towards the spoken word.
»»Develop balanced conversations
by slowing down and pausing. Give your child time to process information. Talk at a gentle but natural pace, use pauses to encourage your child to join in and you can begin to develop balanced conversations. If your child stumbles on words maintain eye contact and allow them time to talk.
»»Positive acknowledgment is the
most powerful form of correction. Repeat what your child says, to affirm their communication. Use this as an opportunity to model the correct speech. For example:
Child: “tar” (car) Adult: “yes, that is a car” Child: “I saw 2 mouses...” Adult: “Oh, you saw two mice...”
»»Be the commentator to your
child’s experiences. Help your child to absorb language by providing a running commentary on what your child is doing. Decrease pressure on your child by avoiding questions. If you ask questions make sure the intention is to seek new information.
»»Lose the dummy. Dummies
certainly have their place, but they can have a significant negative impact on speech development if used frequently (e.g. daytime) after the developmental age of 6 months.
»»Bilingualism is an advantage and
does not cause communication disorders. When English is an additional language keep talking your home language with your child to give them a strong foundation for learning other languages.
Developmental milestones provide useful guidance by offering approximate ages and stages. However, they can cause unnecessary anxiety. Remember every child is individual and they don’t grow up at the same pace. If you have any concerns then contact a Speech and Language Therapist (SLT) to discuss this further.
Useful websites: www.ican.org.uk www.talkingpoint.org.uk www.helpwithtalking.com (helps find local Independent SLTs) Zara Humphry is an independent Speech and Language Therapist who offers a home or school based service in Haslemere, Farnham, Guildford and surrounding area. She can be contacted on: zarahumphryslt@gmail.com or 07947 805039
Correcting too frequently could make your child feel anxious.
»»Give them choices. Choice-making offers a chance to hear language and also use language beyond yes/ no in response to questions (e.g. “Do you want the purple hat or dark blue hat?”). If they only point to an object then label it as you give it to them.
A PERFORMING ARTS SCHOOL RUN BY PROFESSIONALS
CLASSES FROM 2 YEARS OLD AT SHOWSHACK STUDIOS
»»Expand on your child’s language
so that they learn to extend their language. For example:
Child: “Look dog there” Adult: “Yes, the dog is under the tree” Child: “I like bear” Adult: “I like your bear because he’s soft”

Are you making the most of your local Children’s Centre?
T
he core purpose of Sure Start children’s centres is to improve outcomes for young children and their families, with a particular focus on those in greatest need. Their focus is on providing support for children under 5 and their families. They work to make sure all children are properly prepared for school and they also offer support to parents.
Plus. Many centres run Parenting and first aid courses. They often run support groups and individual sessions for parents and carers who have children with additional needs including behavioural concerns. Some centres run cooking and weaning workshops for parents and there will also be sessions such as breastfeeding support.
You may well have visited your local Children’s Centre to attend a baby clinic, see a health visitor and get your baby weighed. But do you know just how much they offer? And most of what they offer is either free of heavily discounted! So whether you have a new baby or an active toddler, why not check out your local Children’s Centre. They run many groups such as Play and Learn, Music Sessions, Bumps and Babes, Forest School, Baby
Massage, Groups for New Mums and much, much more. They are perfect places for meeting other local mums and it’s not just baby and children’s activities they offer. Children’s Centres are there to support parents as well. They can help with training and finding work and they have links with Job Centre
For babies and children it’s not just term time sessions that are on offer either. If you find that other regular activities you do with your little one in term time don’t run in the holidays then check with your Children’s Centre to see what they are doing in the holiday period. There could be day trips, arts & crafts, swimming, sports or play sessions. To find your local Children’s Centre visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/childrenscentres (for Surrey) and www.hants.gov.uk/childrens-centres (for Hampshire).
