KidCentric Launches
Educational Placemats – Feeding Children’s Brains!
Local mum of 3, Elayna Clark just launched her new business ‘KidCentric’ in March – offering counselling and creative play based therapy for children and teenagers. Elayna has spent the last 6 years working with children and teenagers in the NHS. Just like adults, children can experience life challenges that affect their mood and behaviour. According to ONS statistics, nearly 340,000 children aged 5-10 years have a mental health disorder, and 11.5% or about 510, 000 young people aged between 11-16 years have a mental disorder. Children’s natural method of communication and learning is through play. Using play and creative activities helps children to think about difficult things and deal with their emotions in a safe and natural way. Early support can help prevent escalation of difficulties.
Little Wigwam is the brainchild of Jo Slade, a mother of 2 from Woking and her husband Mark. Jo gave up work 9 years ago to bring up her daughters, but with her youngest starting school last September, Jo wanted to start working again whilst still being available for school runs and holidays. The best way to do this seemed to be by working from home.
Typical issues may include; bereavement, loss, bullying, self esteem, trauma, parental separation/divorce, post abuse support, behavioural difficulties, bonding and relationships. Children and young people often start to show improvements within 6 sessions, such as improved concentration, self esteem, emotional expression and self control, and less anxiety. Elayna can also help parents to think about the impact of events on their child and how they may best provide support at home, and, provide parenting strategies. KidCentric aims to also provide training for professionals in education, health, and social work. Contact Elayna, in confidence, on 07855 426510 elayna@kidcentric.co.uk

Sling advice The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) has recently raised concerns about “bag-style” baby carriers. It is thought that 14 deaths have occurred in the US over the last 20 years, all linked to the “bag-style” sling. The Infantino “SlingRider” and “Wendy Bellissimo” bag-style slings in the UK, Europe and North America have been recalled. In “bag-style” slings, the deep pouch where baby sits puts the baby in a potentially suffocating curved position. Excess fabric with an elasticized edge may cover baby’s face and inhibit breathing. The design may cause the baby’s face to turn in toward the carer’s body, potentially smothering the baby. It also obstructs the baby from the parent’s view, due to the high and gathered side panels. Rebecca Ward of the Consortium of UK Sling Retailers and Manufacturers says, “We are pleased that steps have been taken to ensure that using a baby sling is a safe way to carry your baby. If you are using a ‘bag style’ baby carrier and have concerns, we urge you to contact the manufacturer. The majority of baby carriers and slings are still safe to use, if they hold baby in proper alignment and fit snugly by design and instruction. These safe designs of sling include shallow pouch-style slings, ring slings, soft carriers and wrap slings.” When using a baby sling, follow these basic principles: Keep your baby close and keep your baby safe. When you’re wearing a sling or carrier, don’t forget the T.I.C.K.S: Tight , In view at all times, Close enough to kiss, Keep chin off the chest, Supported back. The idea for educational placemats came from trying to replace her daughters’ mats with something that would be educational as well as interesting, and she found there seemed to be a gap in the market. For the past 7-8 months Jo and Mark have worked hard with illustrators and teachers to produce a range of bright, eyecatching, educational placemats for a range of ages, that also tie-in with the National Curriculum. They are made from polypropylene in Great Britain with many aspects sourced locally and are 100% recyclable. Jo runs the company, and their website can be found at www.littlewigwam.com.
Back2workmum welcomes new government training initiative Surrey-based coaching and recruitment agency, Back2workmum, welcomes the government-backed Time to Train scheme which recently came into effect. From 6 April 2010 an employee working in an organisation with 250 or more people will have a legal right to request time for study or training – known as Time to Train. And from 6 April 2011 that right will extend to all employees working in organisations of any size. The criteria for making a Time to Train request is simple: the candidate must be an employee and have worked for their employer continuously for at least 26 weeks. Such requests can be for training or study leading to a qualification or to develop skills relevant to the employee’s current job, workplace or business. The most important requirement is that the training will improve business performance and the employee’s effectiveness within that business. For further information on Time to Train visit the Directgov website: www.direct.gov.uk
100% Pure Potions By the time Brighton mum Natalie Balmond’s daughter Lula was 18 months, she was covered from head to foot in eczema. Her skin was raw and inflamed and she cried and screamed when she applied creams that the doctor had prescribed. Out of sheer desperation, Natalie began formulating salves in her kitchen, and created skin salvation - a 100% natural salve, which dramatically improved the condition of Lula’s skin within a matter of weeks. The salve was so effective that friends encouraged her to develop a business and so Pure Potions was born. The salve contains herbs that are traditionally used to relieve itching, reduce heat, heal and soothe and help you avoid the use of creams with many chemicals and steroids. oids. Pure Potions have a range of baby and pregnancy products as well as the rescue salves available in health h food shops and web shop. Get Composting Spring has arrived and what better time to get into the garden? The Surrey Waste Partnership is offering home composting bins at great prices, starting from £14 (RRP £39), to encourage more residents to compost at home. If you’re new to composting, anyone with outside space can compost at home. Composting at home is a natural process that transforms your kitchen and garden waste into nutrient rich food, known as compost, for free. All you need to do is provide the right ingredients and let nature do the rest. Everyday family waste such as empty cereal packets and egg boxes; fruit scraps and vegetable peelings; tea bags and coffee grounds, are in fact great ingredients to make compost. Mix this in with garden waste such as old flowers and nettles; wood chippings and straw; twigs and dried leaves, and you have the perfect recipe! When it is ready the compost will be like a fine soil. It is good for the environment. Home made compost produces ‘peat-free’ compost. This eradicates the need to buy peat products, which have been commercially sourced and extracted from peat bogs, resulting in the release of stored carbon from the bogs. In the UK alone, up to 94% of the UK’s lowland peatbogs have been damaged or destroyed, destroying the habitats of the rare plants and animals that live there. And by putting less household waste out for collection, less energy is required as there are fewer vehicle movements, waste handling and industrial processes involved, and less waste going to landfill. Composting at home is the easiest way to recycle your waste because you can do it at home and involve all the family. It takes little time, space and effort, and it's so rewarding. Spring into composting and make the most of the waste you throw away. Did you know an average household that composts at home could expect to divert over 150kg of waste from landfill each year? That’s equivalent in weight to a baby elephant!

Recipe for success For composting to work properly, your bin needs both air and moisture. Air is essential to the composting process and by mixing the material, as you fill your bin, it will create air pockets and help keep your compost healthy. The key to getting this right lies in getting the mix right - you need to keep your green waste and brown waste properly balanced. If your compost is too wet and gives off an odour, add more browns. If it’s too dry and is not rotting, add some greens.
The right ingredients Greens:
Browns:

Method 1. Find the right site. Ideally site your compost bin in the garden on bare soil. If space is limited, you can put your compost bin on concrete, tarmac or patio slabs; but make sure there’s a layer of soil or existing compost on the bottom so garden creatures can colonise. 2. Add the right ingredients. Fill your kitchen caddy with everything from vegetable and fruit peelings to teabags, paper towels and egg shells. Take care not to compost cooked food, meat or fish.
3. Fill it up. Empty your kitchen caddy and your garden waste into your compost bin. A 50/50 mix of greens and browns is the perfect recipe for good compost.
Save mo ney o n co m p ost bins!
4. After 9-12 months, the ingredients you have put in your compost bin should have turned into a dark brown, earthy smelling material at the bottom of the bin, which can be dug out leaving the newer material in the bin. But don’t worry if your compost looks a little lumpy with twigs and bits of eggshells – this is perfectly normal. Simply sift out any larger bits and return them to your compost bin. 5. Ready! Once your compost resembles thick, moist soil and smells very earthy, it’s ready to use. 6. Collect the compost. Instructions will be delivered with your bin. But all you have to do is lift the bin slightly or open the hatch at the bottom and scoop out the fresh compost with a garden fork or spade. 7. Use it. And watch your garden bloom. Compost can be used for all your planting needs – vegetable plants for allotments; general potting (if mixed with something like ordinary soil); flowerbeds and enriching new borders by mixing in existing soil; or around trees by spreading a layer around the roots. Or use it as mulch material, mix with a layer of soil, and help prevent plant diseases. To buy a bin or to dig up more advice on how to turn your table scraps and garden waste into compost, visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/ getcomposting or call 0844 571 4444. * The Surrey Waste Partnership is made up of Surrey County Council and the 11 district and borough councils in the county. It aims to manage Surrey’s waste in the most efficient, economic and sustainable way possible.
Weaning
The Fuss About Food - Weaning Your Baby By Samantha Hannay
Weaning, from a parent’s perspective, is often about getting food into the baby’s tummy sometimes in the hope that perhaps they’ll start sleeping through the night. In fact, breast milk or formula will remain the most nutritionally balanced food for babies up to one year. My workshops begin to encourage parents to look at weaning from the baby’s perspective – as an extension of play. Babies will see food as another way of exploring their surroundings, discovering new textures and tastes with their hands and mouth. By the time babies are around 4 months old, parents may notice them begin to take an active interest in what they are doing, whether it’s brushing their teeth, brushing hair and eating. Some may even reach out and grab food if allowed and put it in their mouths. This isn’t necessarily a sign that they are ready for weaning but more to do with expressing an interest in their immediate environment. Weaning is a journey of discovery - baby’s are not suddenly weaned at 6 months but rather gradually introduced to new tastes and textures over a period from when they’re 6 months to a year. During my workshops, I introduce baby-led weaning as well as discussing the more traditional purée method. Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a fairly new concept for many parents, pioneered by Gill Rapley, and put very simply, it’s about introducing the baby to complementary food as we eat it ourselves without the puree stage, allowing them to feed themselves and choose what goes into their mouths. Given that the guidelines suggest weaning should start at 6 months, this fits well with introducing fingers foods from the outset. I don’t promote one method of weaning over an other – what I do promote is parent choice and by
“I was introduced to BLW on one of Sam’s workshops,” says Gemma, mum to one-year-old Poppy. “I thought there was only one way to wean a baby and that was pureeing everything in sight! How wrong could I be?! Poppy is now a year old and I haven’t needed to puree anything. I have offered her ‘real’ food from the start and she has naturally reduced her formula intake as she has eaten more ‘solids’. I can honestly say that Poppy gets excited to get into her highchair at the table!” Some parents may be concerned about choking on solid food but Gill Rapley suggests that babies are no more likely to choke on food they put into their own mouths than they are being spoon fed by someone else. Whichever method parents use, it should be fun for the parents and the baby, not full of anxiety and stress – just be prepared for the mess! If parents leave my workshops with the simple message that weaning, in the early stage, is about play and discovery rather than filling babies’ tummies, I feel I’ve taken some of the stress out of the process and they can relax and enjoy the experience with their babies.

N
Corina, mother of 14 month old Annelie, reflects on her experience with BLW. “I read about it and could see no good reason to do anything else. Conventional weaning expects the baby to swallow purees before they learn how to chew; baby-led weaning expects the baby to explore foods at their own pace, learning to manipulate it in their mouths before moving on to swallowing when they are ready. It made absolute sense to me that you would encourage a baby to learn how to control the food in their mouth before you worry about them swallowing it. We kept a food diary for the first few weeks of weaning to keep a note of foods that our daughter had and whether she liked them, but also so we could note any reactions to anything. Our daughter loved the independence of being able to feed herself and we loved being able to enjoy mealtimes together as a family from the start without one of us having to spoon food into her.”
Samantha is a trained coach and qualified as a postnatal leader with the NCT. She’s been running monthly focused weaning workshops for over a year and for more information about these and other parenting workshops, email Sam on pnl.hannay@yahoo.co.uk or call 01428 606886. Forthcoming weaning workshops are on Tuesday 25th May and Tuesday 22nd June. Agency & Bab ys ny it an

As a postnatal leader and parenting coach, I believe in giving mums choice so they can discover what’s right for them, their baby and their family. The weaning workshop I run – The Fuss About Food – is not about telling mums how to do it, but rather giving them the opportunity to discuss their anxieties and what weaning actually means to them and dispel a few myths in the process.
giving parent’s a choice of methods, I feel they have more control over how they do things. Some parents have had real success with baby-led weaning, others are not so comfortable with the idea and are happy to go down the puree route, whether this is making their own or buying prepared puree food. While others find a middle ground and combine purees and solids.

Family Holidays Travel the world
H
elp your children to engage in the real world - and leave behind their
computer screen, Playstation, Nintendo DS, X-Box, Wii... Mark Wright, founder of Families Worldwide (which offers adventure holidays for families), says their holidays will help you to achieve just that. He says ‘We’ve always aimed to provide fulfilling experiences where both parents and children can actively participate and learn about different ways of life. My kids still talk about their experiences of haggling in bazaars in Egypt, riding elephants in Thailand and visiting a school in Tanzania.’ Families Worldwide is a privately owned specialist tour operator – fully bonded so your money is 100% safe. They offer a range of family adventure holidays to over 30 countries around the globe. You can travel on a fixed itinerary and join a small group of families, accompanied by a group leader. Or they can design your very own tailor-made holiday just for you. We asked Mark to tell us about some of the most popular family holidays they offer. ‘Our “Feluccas and Pyramids” trip to Egypt is our most popular holiday. Egypt is adventurous, educational and accessible. A short direct flight lands you in a world of ancient wonders, where history books come alive. The Pyramids feature on all of our group tours; after that, float down the Nile, camp in the desert, or snorkel in the Red Sea. Your children will be so busy having fun, they won’t notice they’re learning! You can go all year round, and this 9 day trip costs from £899 per person including flights. Another favourite is our “High Atlas Adventure” in exotic Morocco. Hone your haggling skills in a bazaar, race down giant sand dunes, or camp out Bedouin-style. Walk or ride mules in the Atlas Mountains and visit Berber villages, camel-trek in the Sahara and swap desert for beach at Essaouira. This trip is available Easter, May, Summer & October and lasts Win a 9 day family 8 Days costing holiday to Egypt worth from £719 £2,000! Families Worldwide per person are giving away this (including fantastic prize - for details flights). visit their website www. familiesworldwide.co.uk Our “East and click on Competition Africa on the left hand side. Overland” tour
is out of this world - become a true explorer as the truck takes you through game reserves, local villages and spectacular scenery, and by night, unload your tent and gather around the campfire for meals. Children will love the superb wildlife and we highly recommend a beach extension at the end. This is available Summer and Christmas and 16 days costs from £1,699 per person (incl. flights). Nestled in the Pyrenees between France and Spain, Andorra’s rugged scenery is the backdrop to an ideal multi-activity family holiday. Head here if you’re after excellent value for money, easy accessibility from the UK, and have kids who love zip lining, abseiling, biking, rafting and riding. This 8 day trip is available in the summer and costs from £549 per person without flights or £749 pp with flights. A popular choice for families with younger children is our Spanish trip “Rural Andalucia”. From your base, a beautifully–restored traditional villa in the heart of rural Spain you can choose from a range of activities such as a day on the farm, goat milking, local treasure hunts or a ride on a local donkey! Adult prices from £599 per person and child from £229 with under 2s free (not including flight).’ The battle against the screen may never be won, but at least trips overseas like these give a chance to come up for air in the real world, and at the same time provide a lifelong memory, a place-marker in time for your ever-evolving family shape. Visit www.familiesworldwide.co.uk or call 0845 051 4567 for more information.
Enjoy the Alps
C
hilly Powder take the stress and paraphernalia out of your holiday, summer or winter. With two beautiful chalets with fantastic ski-(or walk)-to-the door locations, in the valley above Morzine in the Portes du Soleil area of France, they will look after you and your children from the moment you arrive until the moment you reluctantly say goodbye. Paul, Francesca and Amie who run Chilly Powder pride themselves on all things baby- and child-friendly, from family suites with gorgeously-designed mezzanines, a baby-listening service, full-time crèche, babysitters and children’s meals, to travel cots, bottle-warmers, backpacks, off-road buggies, highchairs, ski clothes, bottles, sterilisers, a blender (although you won’t need it as their chef will prepare all meals for your baby) and a washing machine. Their in-house crèche is superb – leave your child all day or choose your sessions. They do ski-school pick-ups and drop-offs and the children enjoy a playroom with table tennis, Playstation, table-football, a soft-play area, art activities plus excursions everyday. It’s adult-friendly too with a hot tub, sauna and massage, library and snooker room, bar and delicious 5-course dinner. In winter, the cable car whisks you up to Avoriaz and you’ll be on your skis in minutes, but it’s in the summer months that the Alps come alive. Whether you would rather abseil down a canyon or relax in a jacuzzi, the treats of this area are superb. There are 650 km of walking and mountain-biking trails, an Olympic swimming pool or swimming in Lake Montroind, tennis courts, horse-riding, donkey-riding, Shetland pony-riding, summer toboggan runs and for the older ones orienteering, pot-holing, canyoning, white water raft ing, kayaking, paragliding, golf and the worldfamous Evian spa. There is also a waterpark nearby. www.chillypowder. com 020 7289 6958.

Tots to Travel’s on-the-ground mums personally visit and vet every property, ensuring they meet the high standards demanded by parents, keeping a particularly keen eye on safety features. “For example, in Spain there are no laws about swimming pools being enclosed, which means parents have to spend every minute watching their children, hardly a relaxing break,” explains Wendy Shand, founder of Tots to Travel. “In contrast, all of our properties have enclosed

Tutor Doctor Any teacher knows that kids come back after the summer break with less knowledge than they had in June because of the long summer break. If your child’s end of year report shows they are behind, this can signpost serious problems come September, when the new year depends on mastery of the previous year’s learning. Why not use the summer holidays to get your child caught up? Tutor Doctor makes summer learning fun, and has individually tailored programmes to help your child uncover missing foundations and build confidence. Save £3 off your first month’s subscription with Reading Chest Godalming mum of three, Liz Walker has just launched readingchest.co.uk – the book rental service for children learning to read. The first of its kind, Reading Chest aims to play an invaluable role in supporting the drive to improve reading standards among primary-aged school children. Complementing the work being done in schools, Reading Chest gives parents the means to help their children, aged between 4 and 9 years old, learn to read. Liz said “For early readers in particular, it can be hard to get books at the right level of difficulty. Not often available in public libraries, parents either depend on the books children borrow from school, or purchase them.” Readingchest.co.uk works along similar lines to postal DVD rental services and a monthly subscription service costs from £9.95 (for 6 new books a month). It offers a huge range of up to date books from approved reading schemes used in schools including Oxford Reading Tree, Collins Big Cat, Project X and Rigby Star. There is a supportive framework for parents giving advice and allowing them to make informed choices about books appropriate for their child’s reading ability. Books are delivered to members’ doors and returned in a pre-paid envelope. There are no late fees, no due dates and you can cancel any time. It is a hit with children as they can make book choices on the user-friendly website and look forward to receiving their personalised Reading Chest deliveries in the post. There are more goodies to inspire children when they join - such as a book bag, certificates, stickers and reward charts. To find out more about Reading Chest visit www.readingchest.co.uk.
