Coerver® Football Coaching Celebrates 30th Anniversary! Inspired by his passion for the beautiful game, Amit Sohal recently gave up his career in finance and launched Coerver® Coaching West London, a football school for children with classes in Guildford, Kingston and Hounslow. This year Coerver® celebrates its 30th anniversary, and Coerver® Coaching Co-Founders Charlie Cooke and Alf Galustian have been presented with a letter from FIFA, in which they acknowledge Coerver® Coaching’s 30 year contribution to the global development of the game. Young players in the local area, can attend weekly Coerver® sessions, and benefit from this influential teaching method. So what makes Coerver® different? Whereas many coaching techniques concentrate on team dynamics, Coerver® focuses on the individual player. “We’ve developed an inspirational, individualised way of working”’ says Amit. “We get to know our players and work with their strengths and individual needs to make them better players.” The Performance Academy, aims to maximise the potential of each individual player, in terms of their skill, speed, game sense and stamina. The spirit of young people attending Coerver® sessions is also important, with an emphasis on them being confident, creative and hard working. Performance Academy sessions are available in Guildford, please see www.coerver.co.uk/westlondon for more information.

VJS Accountancy Services Vicky Smith set up her own accountancy business 18 months ago when living in Wandsworth with her husband Richard and their three children. Vicky qualified with big 5 accountancy firm Doloitte in 2002 and then joined Barclays Bank where she worked until last year, going part time in 2008 after the birth of her first child. Vicky and her family moved to Godalming last year. Vicky says “my brother set up his own business and asked for my help, and following on from that many of friends were setting up businesses after having children and I was helping them out with the financial and accountancy side, so last year I decided to officially set up my own business. Ever since working at Doloittes I have enjoyed helping small businesses - you can really add value and help every aspect of the business which is very rewarding. My business focuses on supporting small local businesses - either new start ups or established smaller businesses with accountancy, tax, financial, book keeping and general business support as well as helping individuals with submitting self assessments. If you would like to find out more about Vicky and what she can do for you, your company or new start up business then please call her on 07870 702194 or email vicky@vjsaccountancyservices.co.uk. Carbon Monoxide Kills Have you got a carbon monoxide detector yet? New figures reveal that over 650 people have died from carbon monoxide poisoning in the past 20 years. Now, a charity is calling for the introduction of public health warnings about the gas, as it is not only odourless and colourless but can kill in seconds. ‘Being a deadly gas which cannot be sensed by smell, taste, touch or hearing, it is vital that people are aware of the dangers and know the steps to take to reduce their risk of being poisoned,’ said Stephanie Trotter, president of CO-Gas Safety. ‘That is why we are calling for public warnings to be introduced, to advise families of the dangers and how to protect themselves.’ A CO detector costs from as little as £7, and it could save your life. Reduce your risk of CO poisoning by having all appliances regularly maintained and chimneys regularly swept and checked. Ensure that all vents are clear and never take a barbecue or stove into any interior space such as a tent, boat, caravan or home, even if you think it has burned out. Most importantly buy a CO alarm that works to standard EN 50291. www.gassaferegister.co.uk / www.co-gassafety.co.uk.

Mindfulness, the secret to happy parenting By Mette Theilmann of ParentingSuccess

Mindfulness is the difference between being a DOer and a BEer. As parents today, we often experience high levels of pressure and stress to make sure our children become well-rounded individuals. We pack their lives with a variety of activities and sports clubs to keep them fit, sociable and confident, encourage them to do well at school, make the right friends and painstakingly pore over every decision about their education. The daily routine of family life with all its chores and demands and our own feelings of responsibility to ensure our children are confident, independent, responsible and happy can all make for very stressed and exhausted parents. Basically what I am saying is that if we are not physically on the go, we are mentally on the go; thinking about what to do and where to be next. It’s no wonder that 90% of parents describe themselves as frantic rather than fun. It’s no wonder that parents today have become DOers rather than BEers. It’s not helped by the fact we’re always having to take calls, check texts and e-mails; our children quickly realise they don’t have our full attention when we’re attached to our tablet, laptop or phone! This can also create huge challenges when we try and tackle the issue of their screen time too. The effect of this “full on all the time” way of life is that we are never really in the moment or mindfully there for ourselves or our

children and this can have a negative effect on us both! For us, it can cause stress/irritability and exhaustion and we can start to react to situations in a much more negative way. We stop listening properly to our children; we are just too busy thinking about other things. We forget to enjoy the small moments with them and sadly miss out on opportunities to praise them. We then often start to feel guilty as deep down we know that this is not the parent we want to be and we can start to lose our confidence as a parent. This can encourage self-doubt in our children too as they can start to think that we don’t want to be with them. They start playing up to get our full attention as they know we always react when they are fighting or misbehaving. They feel that we are not listening and start not listening to us, or each other. They start mimicking our behaviour and becoming like us!! Our stress is being passed on to them. But the good news is that the key to mindfulness can be achieved by anyone, anywhere. Mindfulness aims for you to fully focus on each moment you are with your children. Mindfulness helps you to find the balance between being a DOer and a BEer. When we do become “mindfully there”, we become a great role model for our children based on respect, care and deep love. Since we are fully aware of what they say, do and feel we really get to know our children again and re-connect with them. We feel proud of ourselves at the end of each day as we feel we are doing the right thing, even

Parenting if things haven’t gone to plan and they aren’t! We gain energy and motivation as a parent as we start to see the same emotions and feelings manifesting themselves in our children. We will have a positive and dynamic focus on problemsolving in stressful situations and become more open-minded to positive discipline. Our children develop healthy social skills based on listening and respect for other people. They become like us (and in a good way!) and we start to have fun together again! Awareness is the first key to mindfulness. Our daily tasks and challenges are not going to go away but when you become aware that you are not “in the moment” and are just too busy thinking about other things or multi-tasking, remind yourself why you need to focus now. Relax your body, breathe slowly and look at your children and smile. Try to think more calmly and remember that mindful parents become essentially better able to manage difficult situations and issues arising in the family and within themselves. ParentingSuccess offers parenting workshops and one-to-one parent coaching on all family issues. To find out more go to www.parentingsuccesscoaching.com

Gaining Independence and Positive Self-Esteem in the Early Years Linda Stone talks to Sonal Chatrath, Head of Early Years and Prep at Manor House School A child’s early years at school form the most exciting and challenging phase of their learning and development. It is therefore vital that the Early Years learning environment offers the highest quality provision with a range of stimulating opportunities and activities for young children. The Early Years is a time when the key goals for children’s learning are: Gaining independence, developing a positive self-image, developing new skills and understanding the world. Sonal Chatrath, Head of Early Years and Prep at Manor House School near Cobham says “Research has shown that the children who enjoy the most academic success later in their education are the ones who that have high self-esteem, are able to work independently and have developed enthusiasm for learning. To develop these qualities, they require an Early Years environment

that offers a combination of teacher-led and childled activities, so that they have the opportunity to extend structured learning opportunities by testing out and discovering things for themselves.” Sonal believes that Early Years students particularly benefit from access to secure outdoor spaces which encourage a range of different learning opportunities, including access to nature, as well as play equipment and the space to really run around. She adds that an holistic approach to teaching which looks at each child as an individual with different academic, social and emotional needs is also important in the Early Years for children to achieve their full potential. Manor House School is an independent day school for girls aged 2-16 set in large grounds in Little Bookham, Surrey. For further information, visit www.manorhouseschool.org

All Terrain Pushchair Walks in Surrey Eleanor Simmons spent her 20s running marathons, hiking and climbing mountains and motherhood in her 30s left her pondering how she could maintain any of these interests alongside her new life with a very small sidekick. Eleanor says “Like all new mums, a new world had opened up to me in the form of coffee mornings and playgroups, and while this was great fun, I began to feel the urge to explore which elements of my child-free life could be revived. While 4 month old Tom couldn’t be trusted to safely hold climbing ropes, what we could do together was get outdoors and explore the local countryside. We have enjoyed so many lovely walks in Surrey, with Tom initially as a passenger in his buggy and as he grew, often toddling alongside. Now joined by his little sister, Leah, we have collated the best routes and had a book published All Terrain Pushchair Walks in Surrey”. The book includes descriptions, maps and information about 30 walks across Surrey that can be undertaken with a buggy. All Terrain Pushchair Walks in Surrey by Eleanor Simmons is available from Amazon and other online retailers.

Babies & Pre-Schoolers The Benefits of Learning to Swim Early

baby moove

Not only does swimming provide one of the best forms of exercise for both you and your baby, being able to swim is a great life skill that could one day save your child’s life. Recent research has shown that more than 1.1 million primary school children in England - 51 per cent of children aged seven to eleven - cannot swim the 25 metre length of a typical swimming pool unaided.

Melissa continues “ Skin-to-skin contact strengthens the bond between you and your child and introducing children to water at a very young age helps prevent a fear of water developing later. Another benefit is that buoyancy and water-resistance mean that babies exercise more muscles, more effectively, in water than on land. They don’t even need to have been immunised before they go”. Water Babies holds classes in Addlestone, Bordon, Cobham, Godalming, West Horsley and Woking. For more information call 01932 227428 or visit www.waterbabies.co.uk

Melissa Holt, who runs Water Babies classes across Surrey says “starting to swim early has so many benefits. Learning to get to the side, hold on, get out and swim is so important, so we teach vital safety techniques from birth. Swimming is fantastic for your baby’s health and development, and could spark a lifetime’s interest in sport. Each lesson provides a complete physical work-out, strengthening your baby’s heart and lungs and in turn aiding development of the brain and with each lesson burning up to 300 calories, you’ll get a work-out, too!”

Organic Cotton School Uniform

Mothers and entrepreneur duo Marina and Irina launched Ecooutfitters last year, fuelled by the mothers’ despair at watching their own children’s skin conditions deteriorate as a result of wearing their school uniforms. Ecooutfitters offers a new and unique range of school clothing that rejects harmful fabrics and puts health and ethics before profits. The brand is the first to offer a choice other than the industry standard; synthetic and chemically treated fabrics known to irritate skin, aggravate eczema and various skin complaints, despite reports of a dramatic rise in the number of children in the UK suffering from such conditions. “When you consider that our children wear these fabrics for some 36.5 hours a week, running around all day, getting hot, sweaty and agitated, at a vital stage of their development, we knew something had to be done and Ecooutfitters was born” says Marina.

As the founders of Ecooutfitters embarked on their mission to source natural, chemical free fabrics for their uniform range, they discovered the little known but hugely devastating effects of the non-organic cotton industry on the communities and the environment around the world. Production of a single cotton T-shirt requires a third of a pound of dangerously toxic pesticides and up to 77 million cotton workers suffer poisoning from pesticides each year, 20,000 of which result in death. These revelations put ethical production at the heart of the Ecooutfitters mission and since organic cotton doesn’t use dangerous pesticides, and protects farmers’ lives and the environment, it became an obvious choice. Ecooutfitters school uniforms are made from ethically sourced, 100% organic cotton certified by the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS), ensuring that production meets rigorous environmental and social standards. Thus an Ecooutfitter uniform cares for every individual in the chain not least the children that wear them. Marina continues “Green and sustainable living has become a big part of the UK curriculum, whilst at the same time the very fabric of that education, the school uniform, has come to embody the opposite all for the sake of corporate profits.” “Our uniforms are not only healthier, comfortable and ethical, but competitively priced, durable and practical, disproving the widely held belief that cotton uniform cannot withstand the playground test. Organic cotton is stronger than its non-organic counterpart since

the fibre is not weekend by the chemicals. It has been worn for centuries before polyester was sold to us as the “better” alternative.” Committed to more than commercial success, Marina and Irina visit the schools that opt for Ecooutfitters uniform to provide informative and interactive presentations about the choices behind their new clothing, “building a sense of pride and understanding amongst the children.” Ecooutfitters are not alone in their mission. Currently big names such as M&S and ASOS are showing a commitment to sourcing cotton grown without pesticides and chemicals, as well as educating their customers on the importance of this. Along with Ecooutfitters these brands are part of a growing global organic cotton initiative, CottonedOn.org that highlights the devastating effects of the non-organic cotton industry, campaigning for a return to organic cotton as a new industry standard. After a very successful first year, Ecooutfitters are pleased to announce the coming of their new uniform collection in a range of new styles and colours. Available now from their online store. For more information or to nominate your school to offer the Ecooutfitters uniform, go to www.Ecooutfitters.co.uk.

Genetically Modified Food GM. It’s a bit of an experiment really – and that’s the problem. The research simply isn’t conclusive. But GM seeds already dominate the US corn, cotton and soya market; the Indian cotton market and the South American soya bean crop. As our population increases, there is much debate about how we’re going to feed ourselves. And scientists, researchers and environmentalists are split between believing GM is the best option for increasing our food supply, while others believe the answer lies in altering the politics around food wastage and logistics and are deeply concerned about the effects that GM may have upon our ecology and health. But one of the most contentious and little known issues around GM is that of intellectual property. The companies manufacturing these seeds own the patent and won’t allow farmers to save seeds for the next year, as they have done for thousands of years. The farmer is forced to

buy them again every year, or bear the brunt of the legal-eagles who watch out for anyone in breach of their seed contract. Like all seeds, GM seeds spread too, meaning that some farmers have discovered unwanted GM seeds contaminating their land and as the World Health Organisation explains, the seeds can persist after harvesting. This means some farmers claim they’ve been forced to use GM seeds or face being sued for a potential patency theft. It is for these reasons that some environmentalists accuse biotech companies of wanting to own the world’s seed supply. And yet the biotech companies claim they just want to provide a clean, green option for feeding the world. It’s tricky stuff with both sides claiming they have the answer; so to find out more, visit:

Online protection is something which people know they should do, but often don’t know where to start. Many people in the UK are relying on built-in, traditional or free software which doesn’t have social networking and parental controls. Without these additional features, parents are leaving their children open to all that is bad about the Internet. We understand that many people are a bit lost when it comes to online protection, which is why we’ve compiled the advice below to give some guidance. Whitelist sites for young children Many young children enjoy using the Internet, but they only want to view the same few sites over and over, such as CBeebies. Using the whitelist function, add in all the websites you are happy for them to view and block the rest. This way, they won’t stumble upon something which is not appropriate for their age. Have ‘The Talk’ before letting your teenagers join social networking sites You need to set rules before letting your children enjoy social networking sites, like Facebook and Instagram. Every child is different, so this must come from you. Some parents want access to their child’s account, so they can check up on

Whatever your approach, help them set their account up with privacy restrictions, so their profile is not public. You can use this free tool (www.facebook.com/ FSecureSafeProfile) to test their Facebook profile. It will show what is public and explain how to change the settings accordingly. Don’t forget their smartphones and tablets Most children have access to these devices now and the way they use them is no different to a computer, so they need to be protected too. Mobile security software is downloaded as an app or will come as part of the security software package you buy for your computer. Set up parental controls on these devices, just as you would for your computer. It is wise to set up a password for your children’s devices, so that they must come to you before downloading any app or in-app purchase. This will also mean you’ll avoid a nasty shock when the bill arrives. Remember, the Internet is amazing! Your children just need a guiding hand to ensure they enjoy it safely. Try F-Secure SAFE free for six months and then just £59.99 each year. To cover three of your devices – PCs, Macs, Android smartphones and tablets – just go to www.f-secure.com/SAFEFAMILIES and enter the coupon code KOGMO-JSWKF-PUXVB-PYYVR.
