News and Views Why not turn autumn leaves into compost?
Busy Lizzie’s Music Makers launches in Send Busy Lizzie’s Music Maker’s are new music and movement classes that have just opened up in Send, Woking. Classes cater for children aged 9 months to 9 years. In these classes, children will learn to sing, read and write music, use a range of instruments and move to music using props. The aim of Busy Lizzie’s Music Makers is to give children a good introduction to musicianship and prepare them for when they go on to learn an instrument or attend singing lessons. The ethos of the classes is influenced by music theorists such as Dalcroze and Kodaly. Dalcroze liked to feel the music through the body using apparatus such as balls and scarves. Kodaly emphasis the use of the voice, through singing games and using hand signs. As well as learning how to read and respond to music, children will have opportunities to develop skills in communicating, social, listening and concentration. Late autumn/pre-winter is a good time of year to either start or keep composting as there’s a great deal of material collected from your pre-winter garden clean-up which could be thrown into the compost bin and left to compost throughout the colder months, ready for the spring bloom. Leaves, prunings, dead plants and flowers are great additions to the compost bin, producing valuable and nutrient rich food for your garden, for free. Falling leaves can become a nuisance, especially if you’re constantly raking them off the lawn but get the kids involved and get composting. Throughout autumn, the Surrey Waste Partnership is offering home composting bins at great prices, starting from £14 (RRP £39). Making compost is simple; family waste such as empty cereal packets and egg boxes; fruit scraps and vegetable peelings; tea bags and coffee grounds, are in fact great ingredients to make compost. Mix this in with garden waste and you have the perfect recipe. To buy a bin or to dig up more advice on how to turn your garden waste and table scraps into compost, visit www.surreycc.gov.uk/ getcomposting or call 0844 5714444.

Suzie Songtime introduces new classes in Beacon Hill
“I wanted something that would become the cornerstone of the community, that was a structured but fun music experience and that purposely mixed age groups at pre-school level” says Susannah Wilson (Suzie) – co-founder of Suzie Songtime, and a professional performer in the West End, playing leading roles in many hit musicals and plays. Now in its 8th year – (and 3 children later!), Suzie is opening her third school in Beacon Hill on Thursdays. “I passionately believe thatWatch rhythm and musical pleasure are gained in these early years” she goes on to say, “and by role play (on trains, buses and submarines) and by subliminal learning (with puppets, props and a huge variety of instruments), babies and children can begin their lifelong love of music, song and verse”.

Baby Play – what babies really need
By Samantha Hannay
Many parents find themselves worrying about whether they are interacting with their baby in the ‘right way’ and this is not surprising given the intensity of marketing messages and advertising together with a society which can be quite judgemental towards new parents. Some of the common concerns I hear from mums are “I’m worried I’m not playing with my baby enough” or “I don’t know if I’m giving my baby the right amount of stimulation”. How we interact with our babies early on clearly has an impact on their social and emotional development. In their early months, babies learn from us how to regulate their emotions and later on how to respond emotionally to different situations. Much of the research surrounding baby brain development talks about the importance of babies being in an environment filled with positive social interactions and providing appropriate sensory stimulation.

Satisfying ‘sensory stimulation’ often falls into the broad spectrum of toys. Toys can obviously provide an element of this and aid physical development, but the big question is what do babies really need from their parents to develop into socially and emotionally secure children? A report by the American Academy of Pediatrics stated “parents are receiving carefully marketed messages that good parents expose their children to every opportunity to excel, buy a plethora of enrichment tools, and ensure their children participate in a wide variety of activities….and have grown to believe that they are a requirement of good parenting and a necessity for appropriate development”. However, social scientists suggest all that babies need is social contact and “the most important aspect of a baby’s development is establishing relationships”. One of the key aspects of my Let’s Talk About…Play & Development workshop is to explore with parents what play actually means and expand our perception of play, thinking about it from the baby’s point of view. Parents often view play in a very adult way with structure and rules and playing with their babies sometimes requires them having to learn how to play again and tap into their own creative resources. Reflecting back on their own childhood memories is a great way to begin accessing an often neglected imagination!
We also look at what gets in the way of play and not surprisingly we hear things like tiredness, housework, every-day routine activities (like feeding and bath time), lack of creativity and ideas. However, by revisiting the needs of babies – their need for social interaction - parents start to see that even emptying the dishwasher, putting a load www.boxgrovechildrenscentre.co.uk of washing on, changing the baby’s nappy, can be Our Centre is based at Boxgrove Primary School, Merrow and a ‘game’ because they are with the baby. One mum expressed a great worry about not having
time to play with her baby enough because she was working. She then shared her experience of bath time the previous evening and how her son seemed to enjoy having water squirted on him and they had a great time giggling together. However, the mother had not built bath time into her own perception of what play could be but once she encompassed this she experienced an incredible relief of guilt that was previously causing her a lot of stress. Parents can get an enormous sense of relief when they begin to think about play differently and consider play from the baby’s perspective. One mum reflected “I can still do the washing and hoovering without waiting for the baby to be asleep or feeling guilty that I’m doing these things and not ‘playing’ with my son because he’s with me and we’re chatting all the while.”
Heuristic play Parents can struggle with their own lack of imagination or creativity so it’s understandable that we become prime targets for the toy industry – in 2008, we spent £53 million on toys! The current economic climate can be the perfect excuse to challenge your creative resources. As adults, we can get stuck in the thinking that we can’t make anything until our baby is old enough to participate in the making – or that it certainly wouldn’t be fun to make anything on our own. It can actually prove very therapeutic and satisfying. I suggest mums have a creative day and instead of simply meeting up for coffee, agree to bring some crafty things and make something together – and you don’t have to think up the ideas yourself, there are loads of resources on the internet. You can make a vast array of toys at home which can be just as effective and stimulating for your baby for a fraction of the price – and it’s a lot more fun! (Always make sure home-made toys are safe for your baby – is it something for them to look at or is the toy for holding and will it go in their mouth?). Another opportunity where parents can stimulate all their baby’s senses is through the use of heuristic play – filling a treasure basket with every day objects from around the house. It costs nothing but can create a rich learning experience for babies who will be discovering their world through sounds, smell, touching different textures and seeing colour. So rather than getting hung up on what’s the best toy to build intelligence or worrying whether they are putting their child at a disadvantage by not being able to afford the time or money to take their babies to various classes, parents could take on a more empowering message from baby expert Penelope Leach who says “often social play is the only thing the baby wants” – and this is what we can all afford to give our children. Returning to Work Topping up skills and retraining Guildford College
How can I get a job if I don’t believe in myself?
Back to work mums can choose from dozens of courses at Guildford College that could open the door to a new career while still leaving them precious time with their children.
Self belief can sometimes fall away during parenthood when we forget that pre-kids we were fully functioning adults in employment with status and pay. This can be mistaken for self belief but it is externally referenced because it depends on someone else.
Starting in January, the 12 week Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) is a springboard to teaching adults, while a blossoming career may be in store for students beginning the new year with a course in floral design at Merrist Wood College, part of Guildford College Group. Merrist Wood also offers one day taster workshops throughout the year in subjects such as horticulture and garden design, to help prospective students choose an appropriate course. Application is open for many other options starting in September 2011, from counselling, hairdressing and beauty therapy to marketing, personnel and accounting, leading to qualifications that count in the world of work. Most courses can be studied part-time, attending college one or two days a week. Mothers juggling childcare commitments can also opt for evening classes in many subjects, including popular complementary therapies such as Indian head massage, Swedish massage and reflexology. For those who simply need to top up their IT skills to boost their CVs, there are short courses in Word, Excel, Outlook and Powerpoint. To apply for courses from tasters to degrees at Guildford College, tel. 01483 448585 or visit www.guildford.ac.uk for an online application form. Funding is often available for those on low income, including help with childcare costs.
Wannabe an IT girl? (or boy!) OK, we all know our IT skills could be better. It doesn’t matter if you’re a rookie or a self-confessed geek there’s always something new to learn about computers. Not only could it improve your earning potential but just think of the satisfaction you’ll get outsmarting your kids! So, if you want to learn but the thought of a classroom gives you a rash, then we’ve got the solution. Home learning with Wanttolearnit.com could be just your cup of tea. They specialise in IT home learning courses at all levels and it’s 100% tailored to suit busy bees like us. Learning is completely flexible and available online whenever and wherever you need it. Learn at your own pace, get all the support you need and stop for that cup of tea when you feel like it. And because it is all online, courses range from £55 - £75 each. Now all you need to do is choose your course whether you get to grips with Windows 2007 or take your graphic design skills to a new level with Photoshop. If you want a new career as a Microsoft Certified Engineer then they can help with that too! To become accredited you just need to book a place at your nearest test centre. The website www.wanttolearnit.com has all the information you need or you can speak to an advisor on 0845 0948282.
Surrey County Council Surrey County Council offers free training for the “Certificate for the Children and Young Peoples Workforce”. To apply you need to be over 25 years old and have done 6 months voluntary experience in a childcare setting. Once you have been accepted, then you do a minimum of 12 hours a week work experience working with children. There are additional assignments to complete to accompany the voluntary work and it typically takes between 6 months - 1 year to gain the certificate. This qualification is often a stepping stone to becoming a qualified practitioner and the council can also offer assistance towards qualifying for the next level. If you are looking for a job in Early Years or Childcare, Surrey County Council offer a Job Matching Service - you complete a form online with details such as the type of job you want, your qualifications and experience and the council will contact you when a suitable job is advertised. See www.surreycc.gov.uk/eycpractitioners.
Montessori Centre International Woking MCI Woking provide part-time training courses based on Montessori principles for anyone who wants to obtain a recognised qualification in Early Years Education. The next open day is on Wed 24 Nov 6.30-8pm. Please call 020 7493 8300 for details.

Preparing yourself for Work
®
Surrey West
How much more useful is self belief born out of internal referencing because it is dependent on no-one but yourself and can be accessed in whatever situation you find yourself in. So how do we achieve this internally referenced self esteem?
• The first step is to write down all the things you are good at. • When you run out of ideas, ask your kids, your partner, parents, •
friends, and other mums at school. Write down everything they say, however silly it may seem. Secondly, alongside each one, note what that also means you can do in other contexts.
So, to take an example: perhaps you can get your child ready for school on time? Well that means that you have
• excellent time management skills • you can focus on a task • motivate others to follow your lead. Do this for all the skills on your list. I bet you’re already realising what a lot you have to offer! Judy Bartkowiak is an NLP Master Practitioner specialising in working with parents, children and teenagers. Among other things, NLP can help with lack of confidence and lack of motivation and energy. She can be contacted on 01628 660618 or 07917 451245 or via her website www.nlpkids.com where you can buy NLP workbooks for parenting, children and pregnancy. She is based at The Sunshine Clinic, Woking.
Prepare yourself for the emotional and practical transition of returning to work If you’re thinking about returning to work, then the Let’s Talk About…Returning to Work discussion session could help you maintain your emotional wellbeing and feel more confident and in control. This 3-hour coaching workshop, led by postnatal facilitator and coach Samantha Hannay, is designed to help increase your confidence and manage the guilt when it comes to returning to work. New parents returning to work after paternity or maternity leave, experience huge emotional and practical burdens - 75% of new mothers feel vulnerable about returning to work and 46% feel less confident in their ability to do the job. This workshop looks at the emotional issues surrounding your return to work rather than the legal aspects of your working rights, exploring issues around:
• Achieving a work/family life balance – how you want this to be • Managing the guilt! • Rebuilding your confidence in your professional role • Managing expectations of yourself, management and work colleagues
• Preparing for the practicalities The next workshop is on Wed 15 December at St. Albans Church, Hindhead from 10.15am-1.30pm. The cost is £35 which includes a light lunch and refreshments. Samantha Specialises in one-to-one coaching and parent-focused workshops such as The Early Days of Motherhood; Becoming a Father; Play & Development; Weaning; Returning to Work; Positive Behaviour and other key aspects of parenthood. To book a place or ask for more information please call Samantha Hannay on 01428 606886 or email pnl.hannay@yahoo.co.uk

A flexible work from home business Training, team support and fun A little extra money or a life changing salary Ultra-premium beauty products that sell themselves • Mercedes Benz cash bonus • Personal Development
With jobs for life and end of salary pensions becoming a thing of the past, a new generation of savvy businesswomen have come up with a new approach to the work-life balance that is not only often lucrative but flexible too. Jane Cuva from Woking, mum of two children aged 7 and 3 and Independent Consultant with Arbonne explains; “ Network Marketing is being billed as the business of the 21st Century by many entrepreneurs and after having worked a year in this industry I can see why. It is a brilliantly simple concept. I am in business for myself but not by myself as I am given all the support and training I need; I am building a team of people that I choose to work with (no more office politics); I work around my commitments to my children and best of all I am getting paid not only on the time and effort that I put in, but also that of my growing team and I could never have achieved that in my old publishing job. The Arbonne products, successful through word of mouth alone, really sell themselves and I love the fact that I am getting paid to recommend safe, pure and beneficial products to everyone! This job is bringing out my confidence as it is very people orientated - I have made so many good new friends out of this ...oh yes and I get to buy superior beauty products from myself at a discount!!!.” Arbonne offer a Swiss formulated range of ultra premium beauty, health and wellness products and the company is committed to the development of unparalleled products free of harmful ingredients using a combination of botanical principles and scientific discovery. Arbonne, who have networks of consultants in the US, Canada, Australia and the UK get the nod of approval from none other than Vogue.com who describe Arbonne in their Beauty Blog (29th June 2010) as a ‘cult skincare brand’ and ask ‘how long before the secret gets out?’. From Insurance to Music & Dance - One Mum’s Story!!! I studied music and theatre studies at school and college but like many people, I ended up falling into a job negotiating the settlement of insurance claims for over 20 years. With three daughters the going was tough but I absolutely loved my job and with such investment in my career, it was a massive decision to leave it both financially and also personally. I have always been clear about my need to work and it has been a big dilemma to combine career and raising my three daughters. How can I have it all? I started running ‘MAD Academy’ classes nearly a year ago which means I can now work exactly when I want to. I run music and dance classes when the children are at school, and I do my paperwork and record keeping while the children dream away their days in bed. My parents always wanted me to be a music teacher and my mother took extra jobs to pay for my music lessons. It paid off Mum!! I now sing and dance my way through the days, having fun and passing on those skills to a very worthy bunch of beautiful kids. Happy days!! Paul’s School Turn over C/E to findInfant out more...
over for to find out more... TopTurn Ideas a Family Friendly Business Around three in four mums would love to start a business, but it can be difficult to know what sort of business would work for you. Antonia Chitty and Helen Lindop have written a book, Start a Family Friendly Business: 129 Business Ideas for Mums, which gives you the inside take on some great business ideas AND tells you how to work out which one is right for you. Read on to find some business ideas to get you started:
1. Start a service. A service business can use your existing
skills and is a great business to choose if you want to start earning fast. Think about - starting a cleaning business – becoming a virtual assistant – offering dog walking – becoming a personal trainer.
2. Turn a hobby into a business. If you are crafty and creative
you might like to start selling your crafts. Carefully cost up the materials you use AND factor in the time it takes you to make each item before you set a price. Research the competition – look at online craft markets like Misi, Etsy and Dawanda and check out local events too. Go for it if you can create your craft while still making a profit!
3. Make money online. There are hundreds of ways to make money
online, but it helps to have some guidance to find genuine opportunities. Drop shipping allows you to set up an online store without having to hold stock. You take orders but the products are sent direct from the drop shipper to the customer. It is an easy way to start selling online, but you’ll find profits are lower than if you hold items yourself and you need to put lots of effort into finding customers. Alternatively, you could start up an online information site. Pick a topic that you are an expert in, ideally one where there isn’t lots of information online already. Plan how you will make money from your site – you could take advertising and sponsorship or have an exclusive membership area that people can subscribe to.
If you like one of these ideas, have your own business brainwave that you want to test out or want to find over a hundred further business ideas that work for mums (or anyone wanting family friendly flexibility) check out Start a Family Friendly Business: 129 Business Ideas for Mums (£9.99). As well as business ideas you’ll find out the essentials of planning and succeeding as a businessmum. Buy the book from Amazon or visit www.familyfriendlyworking.co.uk.
Children’s Centres provide differing levels of help and advice for updating skills
and looking for a job. Sue Brown, head of St Paul’s Children’s Centre in Tongham says “At St Paul’s Children’s Centre we are proud of the adult learning opportunities that we are able to offer through our partnerships with local colleges and partnerships. For parents who want to move back into the world of work we can offer literacy, numeracy and ICT sessions and our outreach team are able to work with individuals to think about childcare solutions”.
