Speech and Language Therapist Fiona Barry has developed a series of short films that use simple ‘parentchild interaction strategies’ to show parents how even small changes can help their child become happier, chattier and more confident. You can watch the selection of free films at www.talkingtipsforkids.com/ collections/free-videos. Parents are the key to unlocking children's communication skills and the good news is that it’s never too early or too late to start. Evidence shows that what parents do at home with their children is more important to language development than class, ethnicity, education or wealth. Children with strong speaking and listening skills are more likely to make friends easily, do well at school, stay out of trouble and thrive in the workplace as adults. There are films spanning the pre-natal to five-years age range. Priced at £2.99 each, the films are downloadable from www.talkingtipsforkids.com or can be purchased individually through the free app.

News and Views Dandy Urchins Opens in Churt Local mother of three Krissy Taylor is launching ‘Dandy Urchins’, an exciting children’s clothing and gift store in Churt village. Providing fun, comfortable and affordable clothes for active 2 -13 year olds, the shop is perfectly positioned in the Surrey countryside and free parking is available in the village. Krissy says, “I am so excited to be launching this shop and hope that my passion for beautiful clothes provides parents with the kit they need to let their children have fun!”. This vision is enhanced by Krissy’s insight and experience of the retail trade to select quality brands from smaller independent British suppliers that have limited high street exposure. In addition to clothes, Dandy Urchins will also be offering a range of thoughtful children’s gifts and cards, including adventure and craft kits. A children’s corner in the shop allows your child to play whilst you shop, creating a relaxed shopping experience. Despite the regular reports of gloom on the High Street, Krissy believes that the underlying retail strategy of bringing real customer service and a passion for providing great products and non-mainstream brands is exactly what modern retail should be about. “Dandy Urchins is about fun living and that’s something we should all be aspiring to”, she ends. They are having a launch party on Saturday 7th September – enjoy browsing whilst the children enjoy a balloon modeller and fun atmosphere. Any purchase made on the day will qualify for a 10% discount on your next purchase if made within 2 months. Dandy Urchins, 1 The Old Bakery, Churt, Surrey GU10 2JA www.dandyurchins.com
Change4Life this Autumn! The Change4Life campaign has been encouraging families to be more active over the summer, but they also want to make sure that these changes are maintained once everyone is back to school and Autumn rolls in. You can do just a few things differently to stay active and healthy. Here are a few ideas:
• Walk home with your groceries, rather than driving to and from the supermarket. • Get on your bike for 10 minutes a day. • Have a quick kick-about in the garden with the kids. • Dance around your living room to some of your favourite tunes. • Ditch the car and walk or cycle to school and work. • Take the stairs instead of the lift or escalators at every opportunity. Visit activesurrey.com to find activities taking place near you and to sign up to a free taster session.

Healthy Eating
Save 20%
Feeding Expert Annabel Karmel Busts Top Weaning Myths Myth: Start with bland food. Truth: Weaning offers a precious window of
opportunity to develop your baby’s taste buds. Between five months and a year, babies are at their most receptive to new tastes and flavours. If they don’t get to try new flavours at this age, it could be creating barriers to new flavours later.
Myth: Only feed your baby fruit and veg from 6 months.
Truth:
Holding off introducing protein like meat and oily fish means your baby could be missing out on essential nutrients such as iron and essential fatty acids which help growth and brain development.
Myth: Avoid foods like fish or eggs because of the risk of allergy.
Truth:
New advice is not to withhold foods like eggs and fish from six months. Giving these foods helps to desensitise babies. An example of this is in Israel where young children regularly eat Bamba – a snack which contains peanuts, and over there they actually have a very low case of peanut allergies. The best thing you can do is to introduce new foods one by one, leaving a day or two between each one, to see if there’s a reaction. If you have a family history of allergies, seek medical advice before introducing any possible allergen foods.
Myth:
Teething means they are ready for
solids.
Truth:
The development of teeth doesn’t mean your baby is ready for solids. Some babies cut their milk teeth around four months. Weaning
before 17 weeks is not advisable as your baby’s digestive system is not fully developed.
Myth: There’s something wrong if my baby’s eating slows down.
Truth: Babies grow more rapidly in their first year than at any other time in their life. Rate of growth slows down towards the end of the first year and so does their appetite. Also they become more mobile and independent and less likely to stay strapped into a high chair. Myth: A low fat high fibre diet is good for babies.
Truth: No, babies need proportionately more
fat in their diet than adults so don’t give low fat milk or yogurt as they need nutrient dense foods to fuel their rapid growth. Too much fibre can deplete the body of vital minerals and fill up your baby’s small tummy before he gets the nutrients he needs.
Annabel Karmel has just introduced a new range of Organic Baby Purees and Sauces. Annabel has let little ones do the talking - Britain’s babies have been voting with their bibs to crown butternut squash, blueberry and parsnip amongst their favourite first foods. Annabel tested a host of flavours and food combinations on a pint-sized panel, assessing every squint, shriek and smile, to create her most flavoursome baby food range which includes stage one and two organic purees including delicious combinations such as Fruity Apple, Blueberry & Vanilla and Yummy Moroccan Chicken. See www.annabelkarmel.com.

Money Saving Ideas from Lunchbox Doctor Jenny Tschiesche According to research just one per cent of lunchboxes in the UK meet the nutritional standards for school lunches. Why is this? Well is seems our lunchboxes lack variety. In fact whole food groups are missing – most commonly vegetables and fruit, but sometimes protein too. Conquering unhealthy lunches is key to making sure our children become healthy adults, childhood obesity is on the increase and currently 30% of all children aged two to 15 are considered obese. Local nutrition expert the Lunchbox Doctor, Jenny Tschiesche gives Families some advice on how to create a delicious, healthy and balanced lunch for your kids. Jenny is the author of an award-winning book called ‘Not Just Sandwiches – 5 ways to improve your child’s lunchbox’ which is available on Amazon. One of the chapters of the book and the area of lunchbox preparation that she is most often asked about is preparing a healthy lunchbox on a budget. There are six components to the nutritionally balanced lunchbox. These are carbohydrate, protein, calcium, vegetable, fruit and a drink. If each of these groups is represented in your child’s lunchbox then it is balanced. Here are her top tips to achieving a healthy lunch without breaking the bank:

1. Carbohydrate
4. Fruit
• Invest in a good thermos container that can
• Buy local and in season if possible to
keep food warm. It means that you can be a lot more adventurous with your food. The foods below can be good served hot or cold. • Make leftover risotto into balls, cover in beaten
egg and breadcrumbs then gently sauté in olive oil. • Use old bread to make into croutons for soup
or breadcrumbs for covering chicken or fish before baking. These nuggets or fingers work well with low sugar ketchup. • Stir garlic, cream cheese and some peas or
sweetcorn in to warm pasta.
2. Protein • Go to the deli counter and buy the ‘cuts’ - the
odd shaped pieces that get left and are cheaper as they look less perfect than other pieces. • Use beans, lentils and chickpeas as an addition
to a salad, in soups or to make delicious dips (you can also sprout many beans, which are great in salads). • Rather than buy processed meat slices, cut
slices from the left over Sunday Roast.
3. Calcium • Buy large pots of natural yogurt (which is full
of calcium) and divide into small reusable pots with a topping of honey, agave, sugar-free jam, muesli and frozen or fresh fruit. • Budget hummus typically contains less tahini
(the expensive ingredient) and more chickpeas and yet is no less nutritious. • Tinned salmon or sardines both make great
calcium-rich sandwich fillings.
reduce the loss of nutrients through transporting fruit over long distances. • Use tinned fruit in fruit juice not
syrup alone or with natural yogurt. • Frozen fruit is a cheaper way to enjoy nutrient-
rich berries and tropical fruit such as mango all year round. Add to smoothies, use in baking or enjoy with natural yogurt.
5. Vegetables • Frozen Mediterranean vegetables such
as peppers are sweet and succulent once roasted. Add to pasta or rice for a tasty dish. • Root vegetables in season are a great basis for
a quick and easy coleslaw or raw-slaw. Simply grate or use a ribbon peeler and add salad cream or vinaigrette dressing. • A large jar of black olives can go a long way.
Use on pizzas or whizz into a paste with herbs and olive oil to go onto pasta.
6. Drink • Tap water will suffice in a water bottle that
you clean out regularly using hot soapy water. • Cartons of milk provide both hydration and
calcium. • If you opt for a carton of juice avoid cartons
labelled as ‘fruit drink’. Preferably go for fresh fruit juice or juice ‘from concentrate’. Concentrate simply means that the water from the fruit was removed at source for cheaper transportation. Hoe Valley Free School - Register now for an exciting new secondary school in South Woking opening in September 2015 Could Hoe Valley Free School be the best secondary school choice for your child? In response to a growing need for secondary school places in the Woking area, an exciting new school is being founded by local parents, teachers and school leadership experts, to provide a high quality personalised learning experience for its students. The school is proposed to open in September 2015 starting with Year 7 and growing year on year to include a Sixth Form. The curriculum will shadow the National Curriculum using a flexible and innovative approach to teaching and learning. The school will focus on 4 key aims:
• For children to become creative, independent thinkers
• providing
children with great skills as well as outstanding academic credentials
• creating a small school with a caring
atmosphere to enable all the children to perform to the best of their ability
• the school will value and embrace the local community.
The school will open with 3-4 forms of entry. It will have an extended day intended to provide extra tuition time for all students and allowing for creative use of the time table. This will be complemented with a wide range of extracurricular and enrichment activities.
What is a Free School? Free Schools are really just start up ‘Academies’ – set up by parents, teachers and charity groups. Around half of UK secondary schools now have Academy status with many achieving incredible
Helping Children to learn The National Association of Headteachers (NAHT) and the charity Family Action have launched a joint Ready to Learn Every Day campaign aimed at helping parents to support their children’s learning. Families magazine talked to NAHT President, Bernadette Hunter, about the campaign. Research shows that children are best placed to succeed in school when parents are actively involved in their education. But that is not all about helping out when they get stuck with homework. In fact, preparing children to be ready for learning can be far more basic – like making sure they know how to take turns and to listen; that they go to bed on time; have breakfast and turn up on time, having remembered their pencil case, PE kit and homework. The first NAHT and Family Action ‘Ready to Learn Every Day’ guide covers these sorts of issues: bedtimes, family routines, organisation, behaviour, communicating with your child and spending time with them. Common sense – yes. Obvious ….? Well, yes, but deceptively so. You don’t have to dig very deep to realise that the advice is relevant for all parents. Modern life is certainly hectic. With many of us working long hours, and constantly pressed for time, even those with the very best of intentions can forget the basics. An HR manager shame-facedly admitted to me that, when her child started school, the teacher called her aside and told her her daughter was falling asleep in class because she was so tired. Bernadette is not surprised. “Not all parents realise how much sleep their child actually needs (under 5s need 15 hours and older primary school children should have 10 hours.). And not all parents realise that if you allow your child to watch TV or play on the computer before going to bed, they will have trouble going to sleep,” she says. Bernadette stresses the importance of talking and listening to children and spending time with them. Again, self-evident – but think about it! How many of us harried parents will recognise situations in which we have been checking e-mails or texts as our child was speaking to us? I’d hazard
a guess most of us have been there. And many of us (however good we are as parents) would probably admit to having allowed a child watch TV rather than play with them because we were simply too tired? But as Bernadette explains, there is more active learning in traditional games than in passive viewing. “Sometimes parents find it difficult to find the time to sit down and play with their children – it is easier to put something on the TV than to play the traditional type of games. But when you play a traditional board game, as well as being fun, children are learning to co-operate when they play, to take turns and to understand rules. They are picking up lots of key skills – speaking, listening and concentrating.” Ironically, while we are living in an age of 24/7 communication - instant messaging, Skyping and TV on demand - these very same tools are taking their toll on communication at home. Family meal times, where children learned to talk and to listen, are waning, and traditional board games are giving way to solo computer games and screen time. The first of the four Ready to Learn Every Day guides urges parents to set aside time for talking without being interrupted by TV, radio, phones or computer; time where we REALLY do listen to our children, talk to them about their day, and tell them about ours. The guide also asks parent to support children by establishing set family routines for bedtimes, mealtimes and homework and recommends having a regular time for a family meal. “It doesn’t have to be every day, but even just at weekends where everyone has a meal together and talks as a family,” says Bernadette. Perhaps it is good news for those of us who feel daunted by hot-housing and tiger parenting. The crucial factors in determining our children’s success in school and beyond could well be the time we spend talking to and playing with them, and the ground-rules and routines we establish for them at home. It could be that simple! The Ready to Learn Every Day guide can be downloaded from www.family-action.org.uk/ naht. This leaflet will be followed by a guide to develop children’s speaking and listening skills, a parents’ guide to helping with schoolwork; and a final guide about helping children with transitions.

Confidence is Crucial for Learning An independent study into the effects of Explore Learning membership has recently been published by The University of Reading. The study tested 1,539 Explore members compared to a control group of children who did not attend Explore, and found that: “Explore Learning members’ improvement in maths was 30% higher than that of the comparison group.” “Building confidence, overcoming shyness to put up their hand to ask for help, being more independent and less reluctant to try without assistance were all elements that parents recognised in their children and directly attributed to Explore Learning.” See www.explorelearning.co.uk/efficacy. ®

Music with Mummy Guildford is pleased to announce new Three and Four time classes starting in September. The classes are especially aimed at 3 and 4 year olds and the weekly sessions last 45 minutes. As with the Music with Mummy classes there is a different theme every half term with songs and instruments based around that theme but Three and four time is more drama based encouraging self-expression and confidence. Children attend without an adult, gaining independence in the small friendly classes before they take the big step of starting school.
Emma has been attending Monkey Music classes for the last year and a half with her daughter and has enjoyed the Rock’n’Roll (Babies from 3 months) and Heigh-Ho (Toddlers from 12 months) curricula and is about to enjoy Jiggety-Jig (2 & 3 year olds) as a parent. Emma will be teaching new autumn term classes in Epsom & Oxshott. To book your FREE class call 01483 841 303, email leatherhead.dorking@monkeymusic. co.uk or visit www.monkeymusic. co.uk
Music with Mummy will also be expanding and opening Music with Mummy classes for 1-3 year olds in Woking soon. Contact Rachael on 01276 489470 or rachael@musicwithmummyguildford.co.uk

Independent Schools Independent Schools Round Up St Nicholas’ School
Aldro School - Bringing out the best in boys’
St Nicholas’ is a highly successful and dynamic rural independent day school, educating girls from 3-16 years and boys from 3-7 years. Each pupil is valued as an individual and helped to achieve the highest possible standards in academic work, at the same time they are encouraged to participate in a varied aesthetic and physical education programme.
Nestled in the village of Shackleford, Godalming, Aldro is a day and boarding prep school where boys aged 7-13 enjoy an outstanding all-round education. Set in 35 acres of unspoilt rural Surrey countryside, Aldro is a haven for children. The boys have the freedom to keep hold of their precious childhood and, combined with high academic standards, are meticulously prepared for the next stage of their lives.
The school is particularly proud of their consistently outstanding results, with pupils regularly achieving 100% pass rate in GCSE in seven or more subjects. Based in beautiful rural Hampshire St Nicholas’ has first class facilities that all pupils of all ages can access, including a Performing Arts Centre, a modern Art and Textile Centre and a full sized Sports Hall, all are supported by up to date technology. Next Open Day Saturday 9 November 2013 10am - 1pm. St Nicholas’ School, Redfields House, Redfields Lane, Church Crookham, Fleet, Hampshire, GU52 0RF 01252 850 121 headspa@st-nicholas.hants. sch.uk st-nicholas.hants.sch.uk
Academic life has to be at the core of a successful school and Aldro has an outstanding record of success over the past ten years with the scholarship boards speaking for themselves – boys go on to all the top public senior schools. Boys develop the ability to take the initiative with their work – whether boarders or day boys they complete their prep at school and this is an invaluable study skill for the future. Contact Mrs Sadler on 01483 409019 or email admissions@ aldro.org to attend the Open Morning, or to arrange an individual appointment with the Headmaster.

In the recent OFSTED inspection report, ISL Surrey was commended for ‘the outstanding quality of its education’. It is also the only UK school to receive ‘Mastering’ level during its International Primary Curriculum accreditation.
The ISI inspection confirmed high adult to child ratios enable children to have good individual attention and children are happy, motivated and content to come into school right from the beginning. The inspection also confirmed that the school provides a high quality education and teaching is of a high quality. Just as important as the academic subjects is our emphasis on the performing and creative arts and sports; all taught by specialists. Life skills and environmental awareness are also nurtured.
The school is situated on a 10.3-acre campus, with excellent facilities, and construction soon begins on new classrooms, science labs, a 450-seat theatre, gymnasium, drama and music studios, library, dining room and a design and technology workshop. Means-tested bursaries are available for qualified local students. To make an appointment to visit, please telephone 01483 750409 or email admissions@islsurrey.org. For further information visit www.islsurrey.org.
Breakfast Club, After School Care and a wide range of After School Activities are available to all girls. Baby and toddler sessions (Halstead Toddlers) are run during school holidays for all 0-3 year olds, boys and girls. Halstead School is a home with desks. www.halstead-school.org.uk 01483 772682

Independent Schools Round Up
St Hilary’s School
Ripley Court School
The pupils at St Hilary’s School in Godalming cannot wait to begin their Autumn Term. The previous year has seen the school go from strength to strength under the leadership of Headmistress, Mrs Jane Whittingham. Successes include winning both the Godalming Festival Maddelena trophy and Darnton cup for Best School Choir whilst ranking 26 in the Sunday Times Top 100 Prep Schools and ten outstanding Year 6 scholarships.
Ripley Court has for years been preparing children for entry to top Independent schools. Its secret for success is to combine this strong academic rigor with the more-important but less-measurable values in life, such as kindness, respect, gentleness, and fun.
The new academic year promises to be just as exciting with extended outside learning in the newly cleared woods and opening of the Hiorns Centre cooking area. St Hilary’s is an Independent Preparatory Day School for girls aged 2-11and boys aged 2-7. Pennthorpe School
Barfield EYFS is “Outstanding”!
St Ives School
“Why doesn’t every school spend Wednesday in the woods?” At Pennthorpe we value creativity and we continue to see the benefits of a curriculum built around it. Our 2013 leavers won an impressive 23 scholarships and we are already seeing how much our pupils benefit from being taught to think independently.
Barfield School’s EYFS department is delighted to have been awarded the accolade of “Outstanding” in all areas by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI). The inspectors found the department to be performing at a very high standard across the board, with a “highly skilled and dynamic” team of staff.
Choosing the right education for your child is one of the most important decisions you will ever make. Happy children make the best learners and at St Ives we aim to foster a love of learning, nurture curiosity and help girls see the world from a wider perspective.
Barfield is a co-educational school for children between 2-13 years old, set in 12 acres of beautiful grounds, one mile east of Farnham. The nursery is newly refurbished and has airy rooms which are light, uncluttered and conducive to learning.
St Ives is an independent, non-selective preparatory school and prides itself on the broad range of senior schools it feeds locally and beyond. Senior school scholarships are often awarded to girls at St Ives and this year has been no exception with a record number of nine academic and non-academic scholarships or educational awards for senior schools in Guildford and the local area.
We are passionate about instilling a sense of curiosity about the world and that starts at the earliest ages with our Reception pupils spending every Wednesday afternoon in our 10 acres of woodland. Guided by our own Forest Schools teacher, classes take a fun approach to literacy and numeracy while developing the communication and language skills that become the building blocks for future success. Why not come and see why we are so proud of our pupils and why they are so proud of their school. Join us at an Open Morning or contact us on 01403 822391 or admissions@ pennthorpe.com Pennthorpe School, Church St, Rudgwick RH12 3HJ
Barfield children are often outside: they regularly attend forest schools and have access to low ropes courses and adventures from Three Peaks. Sport is an important aspect of Barfield life. The indoor pool allows them to swim all year, right from age two, so standards are high. The next open day is on Saturday 28th September 2013. Do come along. Manor House School - Success without pressure
Guildford High Junior School
From Early Years to GCSE, girls at Manor House are treated as individuals and their needs supported in order for them to flourish. Small class sizes enable girls to be offered differentiated work, allowing them to achieve their best. A range of activities in music, sport, art and drama also gives the girls the opportunity to shine in different spheres.
Guildford High Junior School is a happy, purposeful place where learning is fun and creative. Specialist teaching in subjects such as music, languages, art and science delivers a diverse and rich curriculum. Girls aged 4 to 11 benefit from superb facilities in the purpose built junior school and have natural progression to the senior school, which is located on the same site. Music, art and drama puts creativity at the heart of school life, while sport celebrates participation and enthusiasm alongside excellence.
The key to everything is pastoral care: girls who are happy and secure in their environment will be relaxed in the classroom and achieve results consistently above expectation. In Summer 2012 80% of GCSE grades were A* - B and all girls secured a place at the school or college of their choice to continue their studies. Contact the Admissions Secretary, Jane Clifford, to arrange a visit or book a place at the next Open Morning on Saturday 19th October. Manor House School, Manor House Lane, Little Bookham, KT23 4EN www.manorhouseschool.org
Exciting trips and educational visits open up a wealth of new experiences which foster confidence and a sense of independence. Inspectors have described how “children’s imaginations soar as they remain engrossed and focussed in exciting and purposeful play” in a Reception class lesson. Come along to a visitors’ morning to see these effective, enjoyable lessons taking place and to find out more about this outstanding junior school. Tips on Choosing an Independent School »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »» »»
Independent Schools
Firstly, try and visit the school on a normal day as well as an open day, especially if the open day is on a Saturday and the children aren’t in class. Do you want a single sex or a mixed school? For both sides of the debate see www.familiessurreywest.co.uk/choosingaschool Look at the facilities, but remember that the teachers are the most important part of a school so make sure you see lessons in progress and ask about staff turnover - some movement is healthy, bringing fresh ideas: too much indicates dissatisfaction and can be disrupting. Do you want a school that goes all the way through to GCSEs and A-Levels/International Baccalaureate, or would you like your child to go to a prep school that doesn’t have a senior school? Which schools/ universities do children go on to? Remember to do the journey in the morning rush hour to see how long it takes when considering a school a bit further from home. Does the school offer any bursaries or scholarships? When you visit, look at the pupils in the final year or two, as these are the product of the school. If you are shown round by a pupil, ask them lots of questions as you will often get an honest answer - such as “what one thing could the school improve?”. What extra curricular activities are offered and when? If you are a working parent ask about wrap around care and how flexible this is, can you book into after school care the week or day before? Do they run a holiday camp in the school holidays and what hours does it run? What are the class sizes, are children streamed and at what age and in what subjects? At the top end of the school are they taught by subject specialists? How do they treat/identify special needs children on both ends of the spectrum? Has the ‘Jamie Oliver effect’ reached the lunch menu? Listen to the Head’s address if there is one and talk to him or her too. A good school will have an inspiring, enthusiastic and committed headteacher, supported by a loyal and united management team. Remember to visit schools early, as some can get booked up.
