What’s on
In today’s digitally fuelled times, electronic gadgets and mobile phones have become an integral part of our lives. Children especially are increasingly using these devices for entertainment, education and communication.
While they provide numerous benefits to children, there are some risks associated with their use.
As a parent or caregiver, it’s important the appropriate steps are taken to ensure the safety of children while using these devices.
Here are some key points parents and kids need to know about online safety, security and privacy.
The internet is here to stay Photos, videos and words kids post on social sites today can stay with them for years to come. So, it’s important to educate your children about being smart when posting online and to think before they do it.
Once something is on a social networking site, or shared with a third party, don’t be surprised if it ends up on the wider web even if you didn’t intend it to.
Also, even if postings are deleted it doesn’t necessarily mean it’s gone for good.
Scams
Phishers send emails that look like legitimate correspondence and rely on you to give up personal information like usernames and passwords so they can commit follow-up attacks on your accounts.
Educate your children so they aren’t unwittingly volunteering information to a hacker by clicking a malicious link in an in-game chat box or opening an email attachment and falling prey to a phishing attack.
Most electronic gadgets and mobile phones come with built-in parental controls that allow you to limit access to certain apps, websites, or content. However, they are not always automatically switched on, so be sure to check with your provider.
Take advantage of these features to keep your child safe and monitor their usage. They also let you set limits on how long a child can spend on
their device and even allow you to monitor exactly how they’re using it.
You can also look to filter explicit Google search results using SafeSearch. SafeSearch allows you to determine what sites your child can access with their smartphone, tablet or laptop. It’s turned on by default for children under 13 signed into an account managed with the Family Link app. For these accounts, only parents can turn off SafeSearch.
There have been many horror stories recently where children are completing in-gaming purchases without permission and parents are left with a huge bill at the end of the month. Amid the cost-of-living crisis, parents can’t afford for their children to make this mistake.
The best way to prevent this is t change the settings for in-app purchases. You could disable or password-protect them.
Location sharing
Location services are used by apps and websites to help tailor experiences to where users are at any given moment.
To prevent sharing this data, it’s a good idea to switch off this feature. Instead, there are apps and widgets parents can use so they only have access to this information.
By teaching children security measures now, it will help keep their devices secure in the long run.
Measures include:
• Don’t connect to public wi-fi where possible as it may give hackers access to the child’s phone and information
• Don’t share passwords with friends or strangers
• Don’t overshare online
• Keep their phone close in their bags on hand rather than leaving it in their back pockets or places where it can be stolen
• Password protect the phone so that if it’s stolen, personal information can’t be easily accessed

Independent schools recognise the richness and benefits for all that a diverse community brings and so offer scholarships and encourage bursary applications from pupils from many different backgrounds – socioeconomic, nationality, ethnicity and beliefs.
For those new to the independent school sector and even for those who have experienced it themselves, the world of bursaries and scholarships can feel confusing and perhaps even overwhelming. Where should I start? Is there a difference between the two? Will we be eligible? Do I need to apply?
We hope to help answer these and other questions, but be aware that every school is different and you must check their specific requirements and eligibility criteria.
Schools’ websites are usually highly informative and their registrars (admissions team) very helpful and friendly if you contact them direct.
Schools are often proud of their bursary and scholarship provision and very happy to talk about the process and what parents need to do.
Where do I start?
First and foremost, it is important to feel confident the schools you are considering will be a good fit for your child and whether your son or daughter will be able to meet the entrance criteria if the school is academically selective. Once you’re happy you found the school or schools for your child, then you can also start exploring bursary and scholarship offers.
What is a bursary and how does it differ from a scholarship?
• A bursary provides financial assistance with school fees and is a means-tested free or subsidised place
• A scholarship also provides fee assistance but is usually not means-tested and awarded for academic or specialist subject merit
• Some pupils can be awarded both a bursary and a scholarship
Do all levels of independent schools offer bursaries and scholarships? e.g. Pre-prep, Prep and Senior?
• Increasingly bursaries are available at prep and junior schools, but the majority of bursaries and scholarships are available at 11+, 13+ and 16+
• Boarding bursaries are also available, and Royal National Children's SpringBoard Foundation is a charity that helps disadvantaged and vulnerable children access fully funded bursaries at leading schools
Is there a typical percentage of fees on offer for a bursary and scholarship and how are they determined?
• Bursaries are usually for between 10% and 100%+ of fees depending on need. A 100%+ bursary award might include the full or partial cost of uniforms, trips, school meals, and other ‘extras’
• For a means-tested bursary award a school expects to see details of gross income, savings and other assets, and outgoings in order to make an eligibility assessment. Each school’s criteria are different
• Scholarships are usually for between 10% and 30% of fees or can be a fixed amount (e.g. £1,000) depending on performance in the examinations. Music exhibitions offer free music tuition
Do I have to apply for a bursary and scholarship?
• You do have to apply for a bursary as part of the application process for a place – a bursary award will only be made if your child passes the entrance examinations/interview and a bursary application meets the school’s eligibility criteria
• Scholarships are usually applied for in specialist subjects such as Art, Music and Sport
• Often (such as at Dulwich College) academic scholarships are awarded automatically to those who perform exceptionally well and score the highest grades in their examination and
interview. But check with each school how their academic scholarships are determined. Should I ask a school about their bursary and scholarship provision before applying or later?
Always do your research about bursaries and scholarships before applying to a school –explore the school’s website, go to Open Days, speak to the registrars and perhaps ask other parents what their experience has been.
When will I know if we’ll be offered a bursary or scholarship award?
• A scholarship award is usually made with the offer of a place
• For a bursary award, each school is different, and you should check the website or speak to the admissions team; you may be asked to apply for a bursary when you register or not until after a place has been offered
• Parents should ask about the period for which an award covers and how frequently awards will be reassessed
We wish you all the best in your applications for a school place for your child.
With thanks to Jane Scott, Director of Communications, Dulwich College for this article. At Dulwich College 214 pupils are currently in receipt of a means-tested bursary (worth £4.4m) with a further 330 scholarships and music exhibitions held. For more information, visit https://www.dulwich.org.uk/admissions/ bursaries-free-and-subsidised-places.

The number of women in work has hit a record high at more than seventy five per cent in the UK. It’s great that we are gaining more equality in the workplace – except for one factor: women are still doing the lion’s share of the housework and organisation around kids, as well as the emotional heavy lifting.
Research from Stanford University has found that women still tend to take on a much greater proportion of childcare and household management in heterosexual relationships because they don’t feel entitled to put their own needs and time first.
The impact this overload can have is burn-out, numbness, emotional flatlining and even a dial down of their capacity to enjoy time with their kids. Women speak of feeling so overloaded that they want to quietly disappear in a pu of smoke.
One Mumsnet thread called: ‘Am I unreasonable to just pack my bags, disappear and leave everyone to it?’ crystallises the feelings of many women who feel too overwhelmed to enjoy their lives and who fantasise about being free of demands. A flurry of replies like: ‘If you let me tag along, I’ll bring cake’ and ‘I might do the same’ showed how much it touched a nerve.
With more paternity leave, dads working from home and outdated gender roles breaking down, we are moving in the right direction. But if you’re not there yet, what’s the best way to share the load more evenly?
In an amicable, constructive way, draw up a list together of everything you and your partner both do to keep your home
going. This may include micro-tasks, like being the one who always applies sunscreen to the kids, who arranges birthday parties and organises childcare.
Compare lists and consider ways to share the jobs more evenly. Point out that having to remind your partner to do tasks puts more pressure on you and that if they take responsibility for something, like the laundry, they should see it all the way through from start to finish. Remember too that partners are not mind-readers.
Your partner may not have noticed the toll that the build-up of unequal balance is taking on you. Co-parents may also lack confidence or think they won’t do some tasks as well as you. Be prepared to o er non-critical training! Remember that not all tasks need to be done exactly the same way.
Tanith Carey is the author of Feeling Blah? Why Anhedonia has left you joyless and how to recapture life’s highs (Welbeck £16.99) available from www.bookshop.org
Your brain has finite resources. It can’t multi-task. It can only rapidly switch attention, which is exhausting. When it feels like you have too many tabs open, your cortisol level can stay permanently raised, interrupting the workings of your reward system.
We are all familiar with the concept of to-do lists. But sometimes we need to write a ‘no-do’ list to intentionally reduce our mental load and free up more time for joy. The number of chores on your list may have built up because it feels easier to do them yourself and you haven’t had the time to train the people around you to share them.
When drawing up a no-do list, write a list of the things you do each week. With each, ask yourself: Do I actually want this or is it just expected of me?
Then decide which ones you can cross o and which ones you can delegate. Before dropping tasks, check first that there won’t be any negative consequences for you or anyone around you, as a result.
As lawyer Eve Rodsky points out in her book Fair Play: ‘Women are supposed to work like they don’t have kids and parent like they don’t work.
‘While men’s time is treated as diamond, women’s time is treated like sand of which there is an unlimited resource.
‘Women don’t want to have to keep micromanaging, being the planners, asking others in the family to do the things they should already be doing just to get things done.’
Psychotherapist Nancy Colier also describes this challenge in her recent book The Emotionally Exhausted Woman.
‘We spend our lives taking care of everyone’s needs, playing our roles as caretakers of the world, being good girls and working on self-improvement but often at the expense of our own needs being met.’
We asked our friends at Art-K Art School (www.art-k.co.uk) for a wonderfully spooky creative project for the kids to make for Halloween and they have come up with this very scary, haunted house.
You will need:
Water colour paints, A4 and A5 pieces of card
Instructions:
Scissors Black sharpie Glue
Step 1: Draw the haunted house on card and use a black sharpie to outline it. Simplify it if your child is very young. Now paint in the outline.
Step 2: Fold an A4 piece of card in half horizontally. Create two flaps by cutting a three-sided panel either side of the fold. Bend the two flaps inwards.
Step 3: Copy and draw two pumpkins onto separate A5 pieces of card.
Step 4: Outline and paint the pumpkins.
Step 5: Glue the painted pumpkins onto A5 pieces of card as shown.
Step 6: Draw and outline ghosts and tombstones on to the A4 piece of card. Find some ghosts on the internet to inspire your child. Then paint.
Step 7: Open up the A4 piece of card to see the step in the middle that bending the flaps inwards has created.
You now have your haunted house with pumpkins and ghosts!
Step 8: Glue the house onto this step and stick the card with the pumpkins in front of the house.
By Gabrielle NashWhere do you live and how do you get to work?
The logistics of drop-offs and pickups are important when considering childcare options. Is there a nursery on your way to work or close to home?
What is your child’s personality?
Your child may be gregarious and outgoing, in which case nursery is ideal. Or you may have a more reserved child, for whom a large nursery could be overwhelming. With babies, this is more difficult to assess. It’s worth remembering that a nursery may not offer the same one-to-one care as a childminder or nanny, but they will have more staff in a baby room.
Things to Consider When
Choosing a Nursery
Choosing good quality childcare is one of the most important decisions a parent will make. Whether you are a new parent assessing options for returning to work or a stay at home parent considering the benefits for your toddler, finding a good nursery may very well be your best option.
Aday nursery provides a structured and safe environment. Assessed by Ofsted, the UK’s school and childcare regulator, nurseries have to meet certain requirements on areas like staff ratios and hygiene. Additionally, a quality nursery will support your child’s development by offering a stimulating environment, providing a foundation for school and benefiting their social skills.
Sally is mother to Finn, aged 18
months. She describes the experience of her son starting nursery as amazing, with his development quickly accelerating: “Within weeks, Finn was walking and starting to understand so much more. It’s been wonderful to see how social he’s become and how much he enjoys spending time with the staff as well as other children.”
Assessing whether a nursery is suitable for you and your child, depends largely on your circumstances. If you want a
stimulating pre-school environment, then it is undoubtedly a good option. However, if you are a working parent, who needs to leave the house to go to work, there are a few things to consider.
Word of Mouth: Whilst the regulator’s report is important, many parents trust word of mouth reviews more, so speak to other local parents about their choice.
Parental visit: There are a few things to watch out for. Sometimes, a nursery can seem chaotic with lots of noise and potentially crying, but this does not necessarily reflect the nursery’s quality. Are you greeted warmly? Do the staff seem stressed or responsive?
Staff: Ask about staff turnover, staff ratios and whether your child would have a “key person.”
Environment: This should be clean, not necessarily tidy! The children should have regular and structured access to the outside, as this supports their physical development.
Play: Young children learn best through play. Ask about the options and how activities are introduced.
We welcome you to visit our newly transformed nursery for children aged 3 months to 5 years.
What hours do you work?
If you have a set start and finish time, this aligns well with a nursery as they generally work on set hours. If you need more flexibility, you may need to consider your options, because late pick-ups from a nursery are discouraged. Of course, this is less of an issue if you can work from home.
Routine: How does the nursery meet basic needs? eg meals, hygiene, and naps. Does the environment for these seem appropriate?
Child’s progress: How are parents updated on their child’s progress? Good luck!
Elevate weeknight dinners with this delicious (and easy to cook) pasta dish! This delectable dish combines succulent sausage, vibrant broccoli, and perfectly cooked pasta in a single pan. With a savory garlic and Parmesan sauce tying it all together, it's a quick, easy, and mouthwatering meal that the whole family (or just two of you) will love.
Serves 2 Prepare 10 mins
Cook 20 mins
1 tbsp Essential Olive Oil
¼ tsp chilli flakes (approx. ¼-½ tsp), plus extra to serve
1 tsp fennel seeds
4 pork sausages
2 garlic cloves, crushed
50ml dry white wine
500ml fresh chicken stock
150g conchiglie pasta
20g pecorino romano, grated, plus the rind
1 pack essential broccoli (about 400g), cut into bite-sized florets
20ml essential single cream
S hare YOU R fav ourite Share YOUR favourite fam ily re cipe with us on family recipe with us on Ins tagram Instagram
Heat the oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add the chilli flakes and fennel seeds; fry for 1 minute until fragrant. Cut the ends off the sausages with kitchen scissors; squeeze the meat out into the pan. Use a wooden spoon to break it up a bit, add the garlic and stir-fry for 5 minutes until browned, with no pink meat.
Pour in the wine, stock and 150ml just-boiled water; bring to the boil. Add the pasta and cheese rind, turn down to a simmer and cook for 6 minutes, stirring occasionally. Add the broccoli, pushing the stalks into the liquid. Continue cooking for 7-8 minutes, until most of the liquid has been absorbed; discard the cheese rind. Stir through the single cream and most of the grated cheese; season. To serve, scatter over the remaining cheese and a few extra chilli flakes.
"When in doubt, eat pasta."
