Have fun fundraising with the 5k Santa Dash The Alexander Devine Children’s Hospice Service Santa Dash will take place on November 30, at Home Park in Windsor. The event is aimed at people of all ages and abilities to run, jog, walk or even push a buggy around the 5k course.

Registration costs £10 for adults, £5 for children or £25 for a family of four. This includes a Santa suit for grown ups and festive antler headband for children.

All proceeds will help children with lifelimiting and life-threatening conditions and their families through the Alexander’s Care Team who provide specialist palliative and respite care, and will help to build a local hospice for children.

30 years after the famine, Partners for Change Ethiopia launches a new fundraising campaign In the presence of PFC Ethiopia’s patron, HRH Princess Alexandra, around one hundred VIP guests and journalists attended a special charity event at the House of Commons on October 13th to mark the 30th anniversary of the Ethiopian famine.

The event launched Partners For Change Ethiopia’s fundraising campaign ‘All About the Child’ focusing on supporting and bringing practical help to the former leprosy community of Gende Tesfa in Dire Dawa, Ethiopia.

PFC Ethiopia estimates that it has helped more than one million people over the last 30 years. Despite their success, there is still a lot more that needs to be done. There are more than 5 million orphans in Ethiopia and the charity feels that it is vital to provide them with security and the opportunities that all children deserve.

“Together with local people we provide carers for orphans, give them education, safe drinking water, food – everything children need to lead a fulfilled life,” says Pete Jones, director of PFC Ethiopia.

This year’s National Adoption Week (2-9 November), falls in a year when major changes have been introduced to speed up the adoption system and ensure more children get a stable loving home without delay.

Building on the successes of 2013, which saw a record 15% increase in adoptions, the changes announced for 2014 will give adopters a much more active role in the adoption process.

The overhaul will remove barriers by ensuring ethnicity is not prioritised over other factors, as well as enabling approved adopters to actively search for children they could provide a family for, and allowing children to move in with their adoptive family much earlier.

Find your star quality at Redroofs Redroofs School for the Performing Arts in Maidenhead has been the launching pad for hundreds of successful performers.

Actress Kate Winslet spent seven years at the full-time school, becoming head girl and winning her first leading film role whilst still at school. Downton star, Joanne Froggatt, visits often and the rest of her old year group are still her “besties”.

Redroofs also trained former Eastender, Lucy Benjamin, actor Kris Marshall, Tracey Beaker star Dani Harmer, plus many West End performers including Adrian Rhys, who stars in Hairspray. Past pupils have also found careers as directors, casting directors, producers and teachers who run their own successful performing art schools.

Redroofs children are currently on the cast list of many West End shows. Annabel (age 13) is appearing in Matilda, following a succession of other Redroofians who have appeared in the show. Imogen (age 14) is in Billy Elliott and also appeared in the recent live screening of the show. Two part-time pupils are currently filming the BBC drama Outcasts. Isobelle, a full-time pupil, starred as Disney’s ‘Young Maleficent’. Gifted tappers Kai, Alex, Jaydon, Jamie and Spencer are touring the UK and abroad with Tap Attack.

Swim school launches classes at new Maidenhead location Splash School has launched new swimming classes for children 3 and up, at Newlands Girls School in Maidenhead. The 23-metre pool is newly built and there is free parking, with classes running every day except Thursday.

Lessons for all abilities are available, taught by qualified ASA swimming instructors, who are all DBS checked. All children are taught in small groups with no more than six per class and 1:1 lessons are also available. The certificates and badges earned are nationally recognised.

Gym Club launches Boys Only Classes Due to a high demand, Old Windsor Gymnastics club has launched a boys-only session at the club. Baby Loves Spanish wins prestigious national award Local business Baby Loves Spanish has won the first prize for Modern Foreign Languages at the Practical Preschool Awards 2014. Baby Loves Spanish is part of the ‘BilinguaSing’ group which offers bilingual singing, music and movement classes for babies and children aged 0-8.

BilinguaSing is run by local businesswoman and Maidenhead resident Ellie Baker who was delighted to receive her award as her business was only established last year. Baby Loves Spanish teaches young children in a fun and interactive way and classes run in the Windsor and Maidenhead area. As Ellie herself commented, ‘the best time for a child to start learning a second language in when they are learning their first one’.

Ellie is a graduate in Modern Foreign Languages and has taught in schools for more than 10 years but has always dreamed of running her own business. She says that winning this award will give her the confidence to further extend her business with plans already in place to increase the geographical coverage through a franchise operation.

All children to start learning a language at Primary school As of this term, teaching a language will become mandatory from Key Stage Two (ages 7 to 11). Schools will be free to choose from French, German, Italian, Mandarin, Spanish, Latin or Ancient Greek.

At Key Stage 3 the guidelines stipulate that a modern language must be taught. Most schools already have some provision for teaching languages, but the new guidelines mean that that there will be a more uniform approach across England, with a greater focus on grammar and written language.

According to the DfES programme of study: “A high-quality languages education should foster pupils’ curiosity and deepen their understanding of the world. The teaching should enable pupils to express their ideas and thoughts in another language and to understand and respond to its speakers, both in speech and in writing.”

With English teenagers scoring lowest for first foreign language skills in a recent European Commission study of 16 countries, the move to starting earlier is a positive first step towards improving language skills in all key stages.

Free school for children with autism approved in Maidenhead

Herries pupils achieve top marks in LAMDA awards.

The Forest Bridge School was among 35 free schools across the country given the go ahead by the Department of Education at the end of September.

The specialist school for pupils with autism is planning to open in September 2015. The school is founded by a group of parents of children with autism, with support from Deputy Leader of Windsor and Maidenhead Council, Simon Dudley.

A group of Herries pupils have gained a high distinction from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Arts. The prestigious accolade was awarded in the ‘Musical Theatre Group’ division, a category introduced by LAMDA to challenge pupils with particular talents in all three areas of music, dance and performance.

Herries also achieved a further six distinctions in other categories. The Cookham Dean prep school is renowned for putting performing arts education centre stage. As well as having drama classes on the curriculum, the pupils prepare for their performances in afterschool clubs and at lunchtime. Their imagination and interest is also fired with visits to the Royal Opera House and the National Theatre.

Should sex education be compulsory for all children?

The Liberal Democrats ignited a lively debate with their recent proposal for reforming sex education. Under the current system, sex education is only mandatory in state secondary schools – the new statement proposes the inclusion of free schools and academies, with ‘age appropriate’ teaching for pupils from Key Stage Two onwards.

In a statement, David Laws, the education minister, said: "We believe that by educating children about sex and relationships in an appropriate way, we can help them to make informed choices in their personal lives.”

Although the move would be highly controversial, it is not without support. One parent commented: “ There are so many more sexualized images in today’s media, from music videos to internet exposure, than any of us had as children. I think teaching them about relationships and not just the biology of sex is long overdue, and will help kids to see through the media hype”.

WHY DOES MY CHILD GET HOMEWORK?

Homework encourages independent learning skills and backs up what has been learnt in the classroom. It shows both teachers and parents what a child is capable of and can also highlight what they haven’t understood during the school day.

How much homework should my child be getting?

It depends on the age of your child, however here is a guide to the amount of homework your child should be receiving.

Reception: 30 minutes a week Years 1 & 2: One hour a week Years 3 & 4: 90 minutes a week Years 5 & 6: 30 minutes a day Years 7 & 8: Up to 90 minutes a day Should I be helping my child with their homework?

It’s really important that parents take an

interest in the work their children bring home, but you shouldn’t take over. Giving too much help will speed up the time your child is spending on their homework and it will also help to keep arguments to a minimum, but it’s actually detrimental to their learning.

Your child’s teacher isn’t interested that you are able to complete a fractions worksheet or design a poster on electricity.You should be able to do it.

You’re a grown up! However if your child can’t, their teacher needs to know so they can offer support in the classroom to make sure the topic is fully understood.

This is your child’s homework not a joint effort.

Your job is direction and encouragement to find the answers themselves.

TOP TIPS FOR HELPING WITH HOMEWORK • Make sure your child is eating well, getting enough sleep and getting enough exercise. All this helps concentration both in the classroom and at home after school.

• Create a homework routine for your child to stick to. Identify a regular place and a regular time, making sure it’s quiet and free from distractions. Discuss the expectations you have and the consequences if the homework isn’t completed well. This will, hopefully, encourage good homework habits.

• Show your child you care about the homework they have been set. Try not to let your own dislike for a particular topic affect the way you work with your child.

• Direct your child to focus their mind.

Before they launch into the task, encourage a ‘think through’. Ask them to tell you what need doing and ask them questions about the task set. How long does it need to be? Does it need doing on the computer or by hand?

What ideas have they had since the homework was set? This direction helps them focus their ideas and work productively.

• Reflect on the task once it’s done. Was it easier than they thought? What was good about the work they produced? What do they need to work on?

• Think carefully before introducing a reward system. This can lead to rushed results and the necessity to offer a ‘treat’ for every piece completed. Better to let them know from the start that homework is something that needs to be done, and done well.

• Set a time limit on homework. This gives less enthusiastic children an end point they can see. Talk to your child’s teacher about how long particular tasks should be taking and bring the homework to an end at that point. The teacher can see how quickly, or slowly, their independent work is being completed and both you and your child know that there is an end to the homework – even if it isn’t completed.

No help because teachers need to know if homework is appropriate and they need to know how the student is performing not the parent!”

Traditions CREATE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS TRADITION

By Natalie Trice As a child I loved the build up to Christmas Day probably more than the event itself. There were the school plays and parties, carol singing with my sisters, shopping for presents with our pocket money and then there was the year I tried to block up our chimney to stop ‘that scary man’ getting into the house. ne of the greatest things about being a mummy is that I am now creating those special memories for my sons and watching their faces light up as they experience the most wonderful time of the year.

Whilst there’s pressure to post perfect festive selfies on social media, ride new bikes on Boxing Day and hand out M&S nibbles in designer gear, for us the magic of Christmas is all about anticipation, atmosphere and excitement…and trying to get small people to sleep before dawn.

Unlike the routines of Gina Ford, these repeated actions bind the hearts of husbands and wives, parents and children, brothers and sisters, grandparents and grandchildren, linking generations in a very special way.

I’m not talking lavish pilgrimages to Selfridges or vintage champagne for breakfast but you can create your own meaningful rituals and expected events: • Rather than a supermarket advent calendar, invest in a wooden one and fill the drawers with sweets and gifts. The annual unveiling will mark the start of Christmas in your home.

• Put a tangerine in the bottom of their stockings (not a PS Vita).

• Watch the local lights being switched on and attend late night shopping events. There is nothing like community sprit at Christmas to create a sense of belonging.

• Visit your local garden centre for your tree, where you can visit Father Christmas, buy mistletoe and tinsel and drink hot chocolate whilst listening to carol singers.

• Forget about a themed tree - I think there is something special about mixing your children’s handmade decorations with a stock of unique ones so your tree tells a story rather than looking like an Elle Decoration photo shoot.

• Decorate the tree together. Arrange the branches, add the lights and then work up from the base before adding the fairy or star (another tradition) at the end.You can tweak it when everyone is tucked up in bed, so it doesn’t look like Mister Maker has ‘done it in a minute’.

• Whether it’s going to church, having lunch with Nana or watching a an old black-andwhite movie, try to do something special on Christmas Eve so you get the most out of the day.

• Follow Santa's progress on Norad and really build up the anticipation of his arrival at your house. Remember this can create both excitement of epic proportions and provoke logistical questions from older children!

• From sooty boot prints on the doorstep to fairy dust, reindeer food crumbs and half drunk sherry, leave signs that Santa has visited.

Whatever you do this Christmas have an amazing time creating magical childhood memories and unique traditions for your family.

Christmas is upon us once again, and unless you are amazingly prepared and have bought all your presents already, there’s shopping to be done! he big retailers have been bombarding us for weeks, and you can barely walk down the street or switch on the television without seeing adverts for this year’s Christmas must-haves. But what about the small, local, independent retailers? The businesses which are owned and run by local residents, often parents who are trying to feed, clothe and support their own families. Small businesses easily get ‘lost’ in the hubbub of Christmas, when really it’s a time of the year when we should be using them just as much, if not more, than usual.

Yes, the large supermarkets and online retailers can offer price savings, because they are big and they have bulk-buying power. But they don’t offer low prices to save you money, they offer them to make more profit for themselves, by offering loss leaders, or by negotiating lower prices from their suppliers, who then haggle with the manufacturers, who end up making smaller profits themselves, and sometimes even selling at a loss.

But what about the things that the big businesses don’t offer? These are the things that small businesses generally excel at providing – handmade goods and locally produced items, in-depth product knowledge and personalised advice, customer service, a friendly and enjoyable shopping experience.You may not get the lowest prices, but you do get excellent value for money.

Added to all of this, when you buy local you are making an important contribution to your local economy. Spending money with local businesses causes a ripple-effect, as those businesses in turn spend locally, and on and on.

Small Business Saturday UK is a grassroots, non-political, non-commercial campaign, which highlights small business success and encourages consumers to ‘shop local’ and support small businesses in their communities. The day itself takes place on the first shopping Saturday in December each year, but the campaign aims to have a lasting impact on small businesses. In 2014 Small Business Saturday UK will take place on Saturday December 6.

ARE WE PUTTING OUR CHILDREN UNDER TOO MUCH PRESSURE?

By Tanith Carey Anxiety, sleeplessness, depression, homework resistance and learning blocks. hese are just some of the issues children can develop in today’s hothouse educational atmosphere.

Kids in the UK are currently some of the most tested on earth.

But as my new book Taming the Tiger Parent shows, far from making them a generation of high-achieving, accomplished uber-children, they are actually the most worried and unhappy.

In the constant striving for league table positions, not just by schools, but also by the Education Ministers above them, one important lesson seems to have been lost: Stressed kids don’t learn.

Many parents also may not realise that some of the behavioural problems they are struggling with at home are down to the fact that children feel judged very early, and

almost continually, as they move up the education system.

How a child responds to an overly pressurised environment will vary according to many factors: their temperament, their genes, their resilience, their success at school, their personal threshold and also their relationship with in their family.

If they are affected, at first it can be hard for parents to tell the difference between what is a normal stage of childhood - and what might require some help.

But when children do suffer the illeffects, it's vital that we intervene.

Studies have found that children who show signs of anxiety in primary school are more likely to develop depressions in adolescence.

Some of the early signs that kids feel overly pressured to achieve include: • Saying they just want to go home and play.

• Using a whispering voice in class.

• Saying they don’t deserve good marks or pointing out how much better other children are doing and ripping up work.

• Asking to go to the toilet a lot in lessons.

• Avoiding eye contact when talking to a parent.

• Stopping enjoying activities they used to enjoy.

• Fidgeting, hair-twirling, chronic nail-biting and skin-picking.

• Showing a lower tolerance to frustration than normal; shouting without making much sense or flying off the handle.

• Having a sad look and difficulty smiling, which may be remarked on by others in the family or at school.

Parenting • Starting to express feelings of helplessness, hopelessness and worthlessness.

• Experiencing chronic worry, becoming overly panicked by small things and thinking small setbacks are the end of the world.

• Having trouble sleeping.

• Finding excuses not to go to school.

• Talking less and less to parents.

• Suffering unexplained stomach pains and tension headaches.

• Suffering physical symptoms such as mouth ulcers, cold sores, eczema orpanic and asthma attacks.

• Showing OCD-like symptoms such as frequent washing of hands, arranging possessions or developing rituals that they insist on doing.

The good news is that it these symptoms can be relieved by addressing your child’s worries directly, taking steps to ease the pressure and re-calibrating your relationship.

For example, one of the most distressing symptoms parents witness is kids insisting they are ‘rubbish’ at a subject or they are 'stupid.'

That’s often because in today’s test-driven culture, youngsters often internalise the critical voices they constantly hear telling them they must do better.

Children assume that because they hear these messages inside their head they must be true. Teaching them to recognise them, and showing them how to switch them off is an important first step.

Another upsetting outcome is that because your child always thinks you always expect them do better, they distance themselves.

They may become uncommunicative, defensive and try and avoid you to protect themselves from the pain of feeling your disappointment.

At the other end of the scale, there will also be the children who are so desperate to meet the expectations placed on them they become overly worried about tests and homework. They turn into perfectionists who live their childhoods with the fear that whatever they do is never going to be good enough.

However your child reacts, it’s important to help them realise that being good at everything is an impossible goal and there are lots of different ways in life to excel, outside the increasingly narrow confines of the current concentration on Maths, English and Science.

in my book for taking your relationship back to the time before the resentments and defensiveness started to push you apart.

Of course, it's very hard to take your foot off the gas when you know that every other parent you know seems to doing it and you fear your child will sink without you.

But it’s worth it because the simple truth is that tiger parenting can actually make kids perform worse, making kids develop anxieties like maths anxiety and reading resistance.

Beyond that, I found that children who are in a constant race to compare themselves in all areas have brittle confidence, because this is not a warm and welcoming

world in which to grow and find out who they are. Instead it turns childhood into a constant battle on all fronts.

There's a good chance you have had enough too. Perhaps you are tired of constantly nagging and your child about school work.

Perhaps you have tired of the competitive undercurrents with other parents at the school gates; the conversations which feel like duels; the icy smiles you have to feign as humble brags about reading levels, maths scores and music grades rain down on you like body blows.

Or possibly you hate the constant, overarching fear that other parents are working harder than you are to make their offspring excel and get ahead of yours?

Most of all, there’s a good chance you don’t like the way being constantly measured, assessed and judged makes the children you love feel about themselves.

Possibly you can’t remember the last time you saw your children truly feeling carefree. Perhaps you can’t see any other option if your child is not going to be left behind.

But there is a way out - and you can start today with your family.

By making the simple decision to put your child’s well-being first, letting them play more and letting them focus on their innate talents, you will be one step closer to restoring the balance.

Furthermore you will not just start to enjoy being a parent once again, rather than a ring-master.

You will also be reclaiming your child's right to a carefree childhood, a better guarantee of success in life than any number of high-flying exam results.

Make a Chrismas Wreath - Hands on Art Adventures in Old Windsor are planning on running a parent and child wreath workshop, on Saturday December 6, led by local florist Janni Danielsen of Flower Moment. HAVE SOME FESTIVE FUN The countdown to Christmas has finally begun. To get you into the festive spirit, why not try some of these seasonal activities: Write to Santa - he always likes getting mail at this time of year. Send it to Santa’s Grotto, Reindeerland, SAN TA1 - make sure there’s a stamp on the envelope and include name, address and postcode. If he gets time he should reply - in between feeding the reindeer and packing the sleigh.

Alternatively the NSPCC’s Letter from Santa gives you the chance to nominate someone special to receive a magical letter from Santa, for a suggested donation of £5.

Father Christmas has been so busy he has asked the children to help his elves prepare for Christmas by running 30-minute workshops every weekend in December. Children can help make magic reindeer food and Christmas tree decorations with their adult but it must be booked in advance so the elves know how many children will be helping them. All children can take home their prepared activities plus a surprise gift to thank them (£7.50 per child per workshop). Although Father Christmas will be at the North Pole this year, children can post their letters in the special post box in the Christmas Woodland Glade.

Outside, families can have fun following the magical Christmas Trail in The Savill Garden for £3.50 per trail, which includes a festive chocolate treat. The Savill Garden is free in December although normal car park charges apply. There are also festive horse and carriage rides to enjoy.

Parenting A SMART WAY TO DEAL WITH BULLYING...

Anti-Bullying week is being held from 17 to 21 November. Whilst it is great to raise awareness about the problem, what children and parents really need is practical help and advice on how to deal with bullying in its different forms. Cyber-bullying is also on the increase and a major concern for many parents. Author Wendy Gregory-Bollen has some advice on how to deal with the problem. adly, in spite of lots of publicity and much greater awareness of the problem, (especially in schools), bullying is on the increase. I have worked as a counselling psychologist in schools with many hundreds of children. The advice often given by teachers doesn’t work: pupils are often told to ignore unkind comments, but that can lead to increased attempts by bullies to upset their victim.

Most children don’t want to involve a teacher, but they do want to do something.

Kids need strategies to help them stand up for themselves by using assertive body language and practicing smart replies. If you can show a bully that you really don’t care that they’ve said something horrid and even better, saying something funny back to them takes the wind out of their sails.

An example of a smart retort would be to say, “You’re mistaking me for someone who’s interested,” or “I’d agree with you, but then we’d both be wrong.” Wendy stresses that how you say it is just as important as what you say. “Stand straight, look them straight in the eye, say it clearly with a smile and then quickly walk away.

Don’t hang around waiting for them to say something else.” She also emphasises that there are some things to avoid saying.

“Never say anything about someone’s Mum! This is likely to escalate the situation.”

Many children are now affected by cyberbullying and parents are rightly concerned about how they can help to protect their children. Such bullying can include sending nasty messages, threats, spreading rumours, circulating photos or videos without permission, social network hate campaigns, impersonating, using your child’s ID and even hacking into their account.

All of these are breaking the terms and conditions of the sites and providers used, so can be reported to them: they are obliged to take action. Tell children to save and print anything abusive that has been sent to them or written about them and report it to their school, your internet/phone provider or the police, or all of these. Likewise if someone impersonates them or uses their ID: hacking is a serious crime and should always be reported to the police.

perpetrator’s parents, as few realise just what their children are up to on their computers!

There is no need for parents to feel powerless over their child’s use of the internet.

• Firstly, don’t let children use computers in their bedrooms - keep them in family areas so that you can keep an eye on what they are doing.

• Involve your children in drawing up an ‘Acceptable Use’ agreement and get them to sign it.

• Don’t be pressurised into letting children sign up for Facebook or Twitter before the age of thirteen (Facebook’s Terms and Conditions state this, Twitter is less clear, but it would make sense to keep it the same).

• Make use of your internet provider’s parental controls.

magine the scenario where two people who once committed to spend their lives together, are in a situation where one or both feel they want to do just the opposite. They often find themselves communicating through lawyers about dividing assets and possessions, so they can start their lives over again.

5. Don't dismiss my feelings. I’m scared that because you stopped loving my other parent you may stop loving me if I make you angry. I am very sad that our family is breaking up and I need help to cope.

6. Keep the same rules that we had when we were together. You’re both still my parents so don’t start letting me get away with things that even I know are wrong just to prove or score a point. All that happens is that I get confused and frustrated.

7. It’s OK that there are some things that my other parent is better at than you. Let them teach me what they’re good at and share your skills with me. That way I get the best of both worlds.

8. If I make you cross, don’t compare me to my other parent. Saying things like “You’re inconsiderate, just like your Dad” or “You’re the world’s biggest nag, just like your Mum” makes me feel that you dislike me as much as my other parent.

Divorce is a time to put children first and work out what’s best for them. Sometimes though, when feelings between you are running high, it can be difficult to see the way forward.

3. Make it easy for me to see both of you. If it's your weekend to spend time with me please keep your promise, turn up on time and don’t make me feel I’m an inconvenience if our weekend clashes with your other plans. Ask me who I want to see during the holidays and on family occasions, remember there are people on both sides I love and want to see.

4. Don't make fun of the things I do with my other parent.

Don’t rubbish the gifts they give me or places they take me. I don’t like it and it may stop me telling or sharing things with you.

Can reflexology help to sooth babies?

All babies cry, and some cry a lot; and this can be distressing and on occasions frustrating for all concerned. Sometimes it is easy to work out why babies are upset, however sometimes there appears to be no apparent reason and nothing seems to soothe them. Reflexologist and Maternity specialist Sally Earlam explains how reflexology can help. n unpublished study from Denmark suggests that some simple reflexology moves on the feet of your baby may help reduce those screaming fits.

There may be times of the day when your baby may seem to cry a lot and can’t be comforted. Early evening is the most common time for this to happen and this can be hard for you as it’s often the time when you’re most tired and least able to cope.

Excessive crying in an otherwise healthy baby is traditionally called colic, which is relatively common in the first few months of your baby’s life. However, it is important if your baby is crying for long periods that you see your doctor or health visitor to rule out any health problems such as milk intolerance or allergies.

If your baby suffers from periods of unexplained crying, the evidence now suggests that the sooner a parent or carer responds to a crying baby the sooner it will stop. Picking a baby up and placing it on your shoulder may be enough to comfort your baby but sometimes it’s not.

The Danish study was looking at the effects of reflexology on screaming fits for babies aged between 4 and 13 weeks. Each baby received four reflexology sessions over two weeks, and reflexology proved to be significantly superior to traditional medical treatments such as colic drops.

What is reflexology?

Reflexology is a non-invasive and relaxing complementary therapy that aims to optimise both physical and emotional health. It works by massaging and stimulating specific points (usually on the feet but sometimes on the hands, face and ears) called reflex points.

These points are believed to correspond to different parts of the body.

Reflexology to soothe crying babies There are a few simple moves that you can try on your baby, try and do these moves for 5 minutes every day when your baby is calm. Reflexology for babies uses massage strokes over areas of the feet and only requires gentle pressure. Lie the baby down, face up and make this a fun time with lots of smiles - you could even sing nursery rhymes to your baby as you work on their feet.

Work on one foot at a time, use one hand to hold each foot, and the other to make the following actions: 1. On the bottom of each foot use your thumb to make circular movements, working in a clockwise direction in the middle of foot – this mimics the direction

the digestive system works in the body.

2. Repeat the same move over the heel area.

3. Use your thumb to gently push up from the base of each toe, up to the very tops of the toe.

4. Place your thumb in the centre of the foot and gently press in and hold for about 10 seconds.

These moves can also be carried out in the same manner on the hands.

During a screaming fit, try picking your baby up onto your shoulder, using one hand to support the baby and the other to perform the reflexology moves described on both hands and feet.

Having a newborn baby also can take its toll on you as a parent, so why not try some reflexology yourself. It is particularly beneficial in giving you ‘me time’ after the birth of your baby and can offer many benefits to you, aiming to optimise your health, aid relaxation, de-stress and improve the quality of sleep in post-natal women .

Mums Who Mean Business Lyn Watson, founder of Music Matters, brings her own unique brand of music lessons to the children of Maidenhead.

Who you are and where do you live?

My name is Lyn Watson and I started my business, Music Matters, nearly 14 years ago in Maidenhead. I recently moved to Woodley, but my work is still based in Maidenhead. Music Matters is not a franchise and I don’t use any CDs! 2. Why you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

I became a single Mum when my children were 5 ½ and 2 ½ and I was determined not to have them in breakfast and afterschool clubs, so knew that I couldn’t return to teaching full-time in a school.

I was frustrated by how poor the music provision was in nurseries and primary schools, when research over many years has shown the social and academic advantages to young children of giving them a good music education.

I started with babies and preschool children in January 2001 but increased the age limit as they grew, so now teach primary school children (and older) as well.

I get a real buzz from the fact that so many families have been with me for years and I am now teaching the second, third or even fourth member of the family.

3. What did you used to do?

I trained in Australia initially as a secondary school music teacher (I have a Bachelor of Education in music) and after teaching for several years I studied for a qualification in Teaching English as an Additional Language.

I taught as a secondary school music and EAL teacher in Australia, the UK and Portugal before settling in the UK.

4. What inspired you to set up the business?

I decided to set up Music Matters to give as many children as possible a good start in music. I undertook training with the British Kodály as I had always used the Kodaly Approach in my work and love the ‘learning through play’ philosophy that makes the learning so much fun while developing fantastic musical sensitivity and understanding.

When Music Matters children start at nursery or school they are so often seen as ‘musically gifted’ but they’re not, they’ve just had good input from an early age. They also learn to read and write quickly as they understand phonics and rhyming words and recognise the rhythms of the language, which helps them with punctuation.

My absolute passion is the link between giving children a good music education and developing their language and literacy. I have become quite well known nationally for my work in this area and have had articles published in the Families Magazine, the British Kodály Academy Journal and was a contributory author in 2013 for an online music teacher training resource, called Jolly Music.

5. What are your plans for the future?

Music Matters is at the heart of all that I do but has led to other work as well. I now run the Elentone Singers based in Cox Green, which is a choir open to all adults (no auditions!) that I established to give the Music Matters parents a chance for them to sing for themselves. Following training with the Voices Foundation to improve my Music Matters work, I am now an Advisory Teacher for the Voices Foundation so work with primary teachers giving them skills for teaching music effectively in their classes. I also run vocal workshops in schools and at festivals and teach classroom music half a day a week at Lowbrook School and direct their lovely choir.

The Home Secretary visits the Cookham Media Hub It’s not every day of the week that you get to ask a Secretary of State some questions. In September, Families magazine and members of the local media were invited to an event where the Local MP for Maidenhead and Home Secretary Theresa May was the VIP guest of honour. The event was run by the Cookham Media Hub at the Moor Hall Conference Hall and chaired by Sunday Times contributor Clive Davis. Mrs May talked in detail about her own relationship with media and opened the floor to local journalists and other members of the media to ask her questions, which of course included the pressing matter of where her shoes came from and other hot topics like the 24-hour media culture, Internet safety and Scottish independence.

Mrs May told a good anecdote about her relationship with the press. ‘When I became Party Chairman, I made a speech at the Conservative Party Conference and wore a pair of leopard print kitten heels. Walking down a corridor afterwards, a journalist came running up to me. I thought they were going to ask me a serious question but instead they said: “I have just one question: where did you get the shoes?” People ask me if I get annoyed by the media focussing on things like that, but it can spark someone’s interest, so it’s not all bad.’

The Cookham Media Hub was set up by local journalists Sarah Parfitt and Sarah Rodi.

The next event will be a social media breakfast with Gay Flashman from Formative Digital and a Christmas party on November 27.

Vicki Burkitt developed her primary teaching skills to help preschoolers improve their literacy skills in a fun and exciting way.

1. Who you are and where do you live?

I am Vicki Burkitt, a mum to two beautiful children, two year-old Daisy and Freddie who is one. I live in Marlow. I have recently launched 'Phonics Fun', an exciting activity class for preschoolers.

2. Why you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

Since having my own family, I wanted to manage a good work life balance while still doing a job that I love. I wanted to make sure I could spend lots of time with my children while they are growing up.

Phonics Fun has provided me with the opportunity to continue teaching in a fun and exciting way and to spend quality time with my own children.

3. What did you used to do?

I have been a primary school teacher since September 2001, teaching primarily Foundation Stage and Key Stage One. I truly love teaching and being part of children's exciting learning

adventures. Phonics Fun provides children with fantastic building blocks to develop their reading skills.

4. What inspired you to set up the business?

Having seen the large range of activities available for parents to enjoy with preschoolers, I noticed there was a gap for literacy activities. Phonics Fun combines developing early learning skills with having a lot of fun, which is exactly how I believe children should learn. The sessions encompass simultaneous visual, multisensory, auditory and kinaesthetic activities to bring to life core learning.

The children are having so much fun, they hardly know they are learning!

The wonderful illustrations and games all bring to life the ‘sound of the day’ and cement their knowledge. No two sessions are the same and the children love the variety and excitement each week.

5. What are your plans for the future?

To see Phonics Fun grow across the county and become involved in nursery and preschool settings to help develop children's early literacy skills.

1. Who you are and where do you live?

I am Lisa Talbot, a busy mum of 3 children - my oldest son is 25 and my twins are 10. I live in Maidenhead, Berkshire with my husband Dave and my fabulous Rottweiler, Max. 2. Why you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

I set up my personal styling business 6 years ago after having the twins who are now 10. I took a break from work for 2 years to concentrate on and enjoy bringing up the children. I have a real passion for both fashion and people so it made perfect sense to develop a career including both.

I have been personal stylist for Westfield, Shepherds Bush, The Oracle, a guest presenter for QVC, style expert for Heart radio and Radio Berkshire and have written numerous style features for editorials. I really have no regrets in taking the risk in setting up my own business.

3. What did you used to do?

Before setting up my styling business I had worked for 14 years for a large telecoms company based in Maidenhead. My role was European recruitment manager, which I thoroughly enjoyed, but with long hours and travel I realised after the birth of my twins that this was not the best role for me or my family.

I am very lucky I have the most supportive husband who gave me the money for my personal style training course. During my personal style training I set up websites, developed marketing plans and built relationships with major shopping centres, so when the training was finished I was ready to begin working with both ladies and men on all their styling requirements.

Having my own business has been everything I wanted it to be, I’ve enjoyed the challenges and have grown as a person and grown the business, while still being able to take and collect the children from school. I won't lie to you and say it has all been easy, it's hard work but worth every hour I put into it.

5. What are your plans for the future?

I have just re-launched Hire Expectations (www.hireexpecations.co.uk), a Maternity & Breastfeeding dress rental business for ladies looking for occasion dresses for events such as Christmas parties, weddings & birthdays, which is very exciting.

I will continue to grow the personal styling by enhancing and growing our existing consultations for our clients.
