Additional Week in October Half-Term Costs Parents £380 In some areas of the UK, children were given an extra week’s holiday for the October half-term last year in order to give parents more flexibility to take holidays outside the summer holiday period.

However, research carried out by the online travel agency www.sunshine.co.uk has revealed that those parents affected, spent an extra £380 on entertaining the kids and childcare.

1,672 parents with school aged children from around the UK were surveyed, all of whom had been given an additional week off for last October half term. All the parents taking part were asked how much the extra week cost them and were told to take into account anything they spent during that second week on, or because of their children. The average cost was revealed to be £380 extra, with the top things parents said to spend most on being entertainment and childcare and 76% of the parents said they’d rather go back to their children having just the one week off.

Local Mum Publishes True Story of her little boy’s Fight against Cancer Owen’s Journey is a true story about a young boy’s fight against cancer, written by his mum, turned local author Karen Harmsworth.

Owen was diagnosed with Stage 3 Wilm’s tumour back in February 2014, when he was only four years of age. The story starts from before diagnosis then onto hearing the devastating news, the treatment, surgery and the rollercoaster of emotions that was endured.

Originally from Taplow, Maidenhead, Owen’s Journey is Karen’s very first book, an emotional story which took her eight months to write. As hard as it was to write, it was part of a healing process for Karen and her husband Dave. Karen says ‘the strength, positivity and bravery of Owen during his fight was absolutely amazing. I hope this story will help other families as well as give an insight and, most importantly, awareness of childhood cancer and the devastating impact it has on families’

Happy New Year, from the whole team at Families. As this is our very first issue, it’s an exciting time for us and we are really looking forward to working with the Families team and our clients on this great publication.

With five kids aged 2-6 between us, we both know what it’s like to be a busy mum and how important flexible working is when you’re trying to juggle work and childcare. Having worked in publishing and PR in our previous, child-free lives, we’ve been looking for something that we can be passionate about, but also, most importantly, fits in around our children and Families has given us the perfect opportunity. As local mums, we are always out and about with our children and this magazine has been our saving grace on many occasions. We hope you will continue to find it as useful as we have!

Butterflies to Create a Rainbow of Delights at RHS Garden Wisley

Wednesday 25th January 2017

From 14 January to 5 March 2017, visitors can escape into the warmth of the tropical zone in the Glasshouse at RHS Garden Wisley in Surrey, for Butterflies in the Glasshouse.

More butterfly species than ever before, including 15 never seen at Wisley, will be on display. These freeflying beauties will captivate visitors, as they glide around the cathedral-like building which, for a limited time, will be home to thousands of butterflies from tropical areas of the world such as Central and South America and Southeast Asia.

Visitors can become butterfly experts and learn all about the life-cycle of a butterfly in the interactive education zone. Plus, children have the chance to enter a drawing competition which will see the winning design created into a 30 x 30cm metal butterfly sculpture. The sculpture will go on display from 11 February – 6 March (the last date for competition entries is 23 January; full details are available online).

During February Half Term, 11 – 19 February, there will also be a range of free family events focused on Whatever the Weather for Butterflies, with activities varying daily.

Tommy’s launches the UK’s first Prematurity Baby App

Around 60,000 babies are born prematurely every year in the UK and many suffer lifelong consequences as a result. The weeks in hospital after the baby’s premature birth are an emotional and stressful time for parents and to help them cope with this, Tommy’s has launched its Premature Baby App for the first time on mobile.

The app is the first of its kind in the UK and features a development diary, accredited advice, growth charts, feeding logs and a network of other parents going through similar experiences.

The Prime Minister celebrates a Michelin Star Award for Local Restaurant Diners at the Crown restaurant in Burchetts Green last November were surprised when Prime Minister, Theresa May, along with husband Philip, popped in for dinner and to congratulate chef Simon Bonwick and his family on their recent Michelin star award.

The family run restaurant was awarded the Michelin star in October for the 2017 guide. Simon revealed "We were absolutely delighted that the Prime Minister should think to visit and support us as we are only a small restaurant and we feel deeply honoured."

The Crown Restaurant, which is open Wednesday - Sunday is to be found in the

centre of Burchetts Green off the A4 between Knowl Hill and Maidenhead.

Southbank Centre announces major new exhibition: Adventures in Moominland An immersive, interactive exhibition which explores the internationallyrecognised stories of the Moomin family through the life of its author Tove Jansson, started at the Southbank’s Royal Festival Hall in December 2016.

It is the first major UK exhibition on the Moomins with more than 40 items of archive material on display including original drawings, paintings and personal items.

Featuring an audio narrative voiced by Sandi Toksvig and written by children’s author Laura Dockrill, the exhibition will run until the 23rd April 2017 and a range of Moomin themed events are to take place during Southbank Centre’s 2017 festival offering in February and March.

A top UK child psychiatrist is supporting new guidelines recommended by US experts to limit screen time for children under five to an hour a day. Top doctors in the United States also maintained infants under two should not view them at all.

The American Academy of Paediatrics said research showed that too much use of iPhones, iPads, laptops and television was damaging children’s sleep, fitness levels and ability to socialise with others. They stated if children were to use social media, parents should join in and ensure children were watching high quality educational programmes, but ban screens at meals.

Dr Hayley van Zwanenberg, clinical director of the Priory’s Wellbeing Clinics and medical director of the Priory’s Woodbourne Hospital in Birmingham, said ‘The pre-school years are particularly vital for developing non-verbal skills that young people miss completely when on screens’.

Although there is still insufficient evidence to judge the long-term effects of screens on infants and young children, Dr van Zwanenberg said guidelines were useful for parents trying to set limits on technology use.

Coworth Flexlands’ Girls bring home The Buzzard Cup and LAMDA Awards

Coworth Flexlands’ girls enjoyed the annual opportunity to compete at the Woking Music Festival last November. A rare opportunity for children to perform competitively in their chosen music and drama discipline.

Congratulations go to Coworth Flexlands’ Year 6 pupil, Camilla Hale for winning the Buzzard Cup with distinction for her piano recital, particularly as she was competing against 14 year olds with up to Grade 8 piano.

On the last day of the Festival dedicated to Speech & Drama, thirtysix Coworth Flexlands’ girls participated and won in every single category including the top three places in 8 year & 9 year old Verse Speaking categories. Charlotte Underwood won the Festival Medal with two of her colleagues securing second and third place respectively.

Congratulations also go to Sophie Laithwaite for taking The Othon Polak Cup, with four of her fellow pupils placing second and joint third.

Coworth Flexlands also secured second place in both the U8 and U11 categories and The Coworth Flexlands Choir were highly commended in the Festival’s U11 Millennium Cup. The school’s drama and LAMDA teacher, Janine Pardo, glowed “All our girls should be very proud of these outstanding results”.

New Design Centre opens for Busy Buttons Busy Buttons Creative Studio opened its new community interest company, Busy Buttons Design Centre CIC in December. The company aims to make creative learning much more accessible to the local community benefitting children, parents, senior citizens, children with special needs, schools, businesses and even the everyday shopper in Central Windsor.

As well as offering professional courses for children and adults, an art gallery to support local and international artist's work and a space for customised birthday parties, the project hosts a 'Drop and Shop' and a 'Craft & Coffee' service. HOW TO MAKE MATHS FUN FOR KIDS

“They'll be having too much fun to notice they're adding and subtracting�

M

aths is one of the fundamental skills that all children need to acquire, and there are plenty of ways you can make maths fun through the use of games and maths activities at home.

Numeracy targets are fundamental to the National Curriculum and to primary school testing and that can seem as intimidating to you as to your child. But there are some simple strategies you can put in place that can make maths fun for your kids and reinforce how important those life skills are.

The way maths is taught in schools has changed fundamentally over the past few years so, who knows? You may end up learning something new, too.

Do your homework Before you can support your child's maths learning at home, you'll need to find out about the way they learn maths at school.

Do some homework on modern maths methods like number lines and gridding, and find out whether your child's school offers maths support classes for parents. If not, there are some excellent resources available online like the family maths toolkit from national numeracy or the 'Maths for Mums and Dads' books by Mike Askew and Rob Eastaway.

Maths by stealth There are plenty of ways you can incorporate maths into everyday life, which is an excellent way of letting children know how important numeracy skills are outside of the classroom. Next time you have a cake or a pizza, ask them to divide it into quarters or thirds or an even number of portions for the number of people eating it. Baking isn't just a pleasurable activity to do with your kids, it's one of the very best ways of embedding the importance of weights and measures. They'll also need to keep an eye on the clock to know when their goodies are ready to come out of the oven. Meanwhile, every time you go to the Telephone: 01628 788058

shops, encourage them to add as they go and then make their best estimate of the final bill. From calculating the change they should receive when they buy an ice cream to keeping score in a friendly game of football, everyday maths really is everywhere!

Make tech and tables count There are numerous maths apps available for children of all ages, from simple counting games to more advanced calculations. Doodle Maths and Mr Thorne's Maths Universe should get even committed young mathphobes practising their numeracy on their tablets and smartphones. Percy Parker Sing Your Times Tables and Squeebles Times Tables are both excellent apps for embedding times tables in young brains. Why not try singing along with Percy Parker on your next long car journey? For older children facing their end of primary school tests, ensure that they know not just the multipliers but the divisors too, up to 12 x 12.

Try gamification In other words, get out some old fashioned board games. Children learn best when an activity is fun, and they're usually unaware that they're learning through playing games.

Dominoes is an excellent game for practising basic maths concepts, as is Snakes and Ladders. They'll be having too much fun to notice they're adding and subtracting and recognising basic number patterns. For older children, Monopoly introduces more sophisticated numeracy skills and Scrabble is a brilliant way to practise both numeracy and literacy. Board games are also valuable for introducing related concepts like strategy, logic and reasoning skills into the mix.

Make it more formal As your children's maths skills progress, you can begin to make their home learning more formalised. There are any number of online maths resources available and your school may encourage at-home use of a programme like Mathletics to challenge and reinforce skills learned in the classroom. These online resources usually feature progressive levels so you can easily track your child's progress but do check before you sign up to a paid programme that it's compatible with the National Curriculum. Although it's easy to assume that children will prefer working on the computer, many also enjoy age-appropriate workbooks, with stickers to reward their progress.

Learn with and from your children As the family maths toolkit points out, maths is not a can or cannot subject but something we can all improve, however old we are. When your children start to bring home maths homework, take the opportunity to learn about new maths concepts from them and show them real world examples of how to put those skills into practice - by checking your shopping or phone bill. Encourage them to contextualise a newly acquired skill by putting it into practice around the home, whether it's telling you the time their favourite TV show comes on or estimating how long their bath takes to run. And always praise their effort rather than their talent, to reinforce the message that by working hard anyone can improve their maths skills.

80th Birthday celebration for Mr B.K Goyal makes 2016 a celebratory year for Maidenhead business 2016 turned out to be a double celebration for Goyals, the local school uniform suppliers. As well as celebrating their 50th anniversary which we covered in the summer, Mr B.K Goyal celebrated his 80th birthday!

The Goyal family’s philosophy has always been to support the local community and they have amassed a huge loyal customer base, serving over 50,000 customers each year.

When BK retired, he passed the business onto daughter-in-law Seema Goyal who runs it today and has continued these special customer relationships. Seema supports a number of local charities and sponsors many children, by providing free uniform for them during their education. As part of Goyals’ 50th year celebrations, the Goyal’s family set themselves a target to donate 500 uniforms to families. Seema says, “My parents-in-law always told me that the most important thing was to give back to the community and I intend to carry on with their intentions”. Seema also supports and mentors Year 11 pupils at Claire’s Court School acting as one of their business advisers in their Young Enterprise scheme.

Bisham School looks to join Ashley Hill MultiAcademy Trust The Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead is encouraging parents of pupils at Bisham C of E Primary School to support plans to convert the school into an academy.

In a consultation run in November, families were given the chance to understand and comment on the proposal for the school to join the Ashley Hill Multi-Academy Trust. The Interim Executive Board of the school is recommending this option to secure the long-term future of the school and ensure every pupil has access to a good education.

Over the last two years, Ofsted has judged that the school has raised its standards, however the council estimates the school, currently half-full, will require an extra £750,000 over the next three years to stay open as a stand alone school.

The Ashley Hill Trust provides high quality education through their existing state-funded schools in Knowl Hill and White Waltham. The proposal states Bisham would collaborate with the Trust from January 2017 to provide good education for every pupil and formally join the Trust once the legal process has completed in spring 2017.

Community Pitch Proves a Huge Success A new all weather community sports pitch at Dedworth Middle School has proved a huge success following a £230,000 investment from the council.

Since opening in September 2016 the flood-lit artificial pitch has seen around 1,000 young people from the school and wider community get involved in outdoor sports.

Cllr Natasha Airey, cabinet member for children’s services, said: “It’s great to see so many youth teams and school pupils already making good use of these new facilities. We wanted this pitch to help inspire our young people to get up and active and we are thrilled to see that has happened so soon.”

The pitch is available for hire on weekends and out of term-time so any local businesses or groups that are interested in booking it should get in touch.

HOW TO BE A MUM AND STILL FIND TIME TO EXERCISE

One of Families TVE’s editors: Rachel Bailey finds out about how one mum’s ‘pack of hacks’ was launched to help others see that exercise is still possible with children.

I

f like me (and probably every other mum on the planet), you’re busy bringing up children, holding down a job, keeping house (and so the list continues), you could be forgiven for thinking ‘who has time to exercise?’ However, help is at hand thanks to mum of two and personal trainer Jemma Thomas.

Mum hacks, parenting hacks, anything that saves us time is usually seen as welcome advice. After the birth of her first son, Jude, Jemma realised that she was having trouble finding the time to fit exercise into her daily routine and started leaving herself notes around the house

with reminders for short exercises and other tips to prompt her to get moving.

Realising she now had to fit exercise in whenever she got a chance instead of just taking herself off for a run and wondering whether other mums might also benefit from these reminders, Jemma launched Mumma’s Health Hub, also affectionately referred to as a ‘pack of hacks’.

These health hacks are a small pack of cards that contain some of Jemma’s favourite handy tips or moves that can be done whilst watching TV or cooking dinner. The idea being that you keep the cards handy and pick one up as and when

you find yourself with a spare minute or two during the day. Jemma says ‘I discovered that doing tiny bursts of activity were better than none and gave me more energy in the long run’. Whilst some of the exercise sequences are quite intense, the cards also include some tips on how to relax which could be invaluable after a day negotiating with small people.

The pack of cards cost £12.95 and suggest a range of strength, cardio and core activities, including the number of reps and sets. Each pack contains 21 A6 sized postcards that show moves, hints, tips and sequences. ANNA COLLINS GIVES MUMMA’S HEALTH HUB CARDS A SHOT! So when the colourful pack of cards arrived in the post, I opened them with great enthusiasm. My first day trying them out was a working day. Luckily I work from home and no-one is around, so perfect conditions to give them a go! First up was at 10am coffee time and I picked 20 star jumps. I did fit them perfectly into the time it took for the kettle to boil so a good start.

The next one I picked is so important and so easy to do if you are reminded: 15 pelvic floor squeezes. On this card it also says ‘stick this one on the fridge’. Good idea! It’s all about remembering with these ones.

Some of the cards are quite amusing: ‘tip toe through your home for as long as you can’, which proved great for calf strength. It’s surprising how much energy and strength that one takes by the way.

The next day was the real acid test as I was at home with my 26 monthold! I did save my plank exercise for nap time, as we all know children of that age have a habit of climbing on top of you! Although with many of the cards he could happily join in.

The cards are definitely shaking up my thinking when it comes to exercising and I can feel the muscles in my arms from yesterday’s efforts.

The cards are simple to follow. A few of them have you breaking free from the house, but all are manageable. Even a 30 minute run once a week from your own

front door is easier than finding time to go to the gym.

The cards definitely act as great exercise reminders and I will keep them handy. I feel more aware that my body actually has muscles and will continue to fit in some bursts of activity when I can. So far, it’s thumbs up from me! Watch this space!

Health News How important is Vitamin D? Vitamin D is produced in the skin following exposure to sunlight, but now that we have been wrapped up in our coats for a few months, it’s worth remembering government advice that everyone in the UK should take a vitamin D supplement during winter.

Vitamin D aids calcium absorption and strengthens immunity so it’s key for healthy bones and teeth and can help fight off winter bugs.

Local nutritionist Melissa Marston, states that although some foods such as cereals and bread, have had vitamin D added to them, it only occurs naturally in a few foods so it can be difficult to ensure we are getting enough. The best sources are oily fish (mackerel, salmon, sardines) and eggs. WINTER WALKS

If like us you’ve over indulged over the Christmas holidays, but don’t have the time (or inclination) to join a gym, it’s the perfect time to head outside and let the kids burn off some of that energy. Rachel Bailey shares some of her favourite places for a stroll.

W

hen you’re a busy mum, it can be hard to find the time to exercise, but going for a walk can be a great family activity. It will help you beat the January blues and best of all it’s free! If kids need encouraging, choose somewhere they can ride bikes or scooters and if you’re wrapped up warm and kitted out with wellies, there’s usually a puddle (or two) to be found that’s perfect for jumping in!

Black Park in Wexham has 500 acres to explore, which makes it the perfect place for a walk or cycle. The less adventurous can take a leisurely stroll round the lake and there’s a lovely children’s woodland adventure play area for the kids to enjoy.

There’s plenty to explore in Burnham Beeches with woodland trails that range from under a mile to 5 miles for the more seasoned walker.

Cliveden National Trust is now open most of the year and the walk from the Woodland car park is well worth doing. It’s just over 2 miles through woods with wooden sculptures to spot, beautiful views and plenty to do at Cliveden once you get there!

Denham Country Park is a nature reserve with the river and canal passing through providing plenty of wildlife and lots of trails to wander along. There’s also a great adventure playground which includes a sandpit and adventure trail.

The Jubilee River runs between Maidenhead and Windsor and is a 7 mile walk between the two. I’ve done it once when my eldest was in a buggy and I was determined to walk myself back into shape (not that the subsequent coffee and cake helped with that!). Rather than walk the whole route however, there is a stretch from Marsh Lane in Taplow (opposite the Telephone: 01628 788058

small car park) to Dorney, which gives you the perfect excuse to finish up in Dorney Court Kitchen Garden for that aforementioned slice of cake.

Generally quieter than Black Park, Langley Park in Iver has buggy friendly paths and designated cycling routes as well as a small playground for younger children and lots of open space for running around in or playing ball games.

With 4,800 acres of parkland, Windsor Great Park is the perfect place for a stroll. There’s so much to explore. The Long Walk runs from Windsor Castle to the Copper Horse, a statue depicting George III on horseback. The walk is just over 2.5 miles along a tarmac path, perfect for buggies and with wonderful views of the castle. The statue is situated at the top of Snow Hill and offers some stunning views across the tree tops. If you’re lucky you might even spot the odd deer among the trees.

Or, why not take a walk through the deer park.Young children will love looking for deer and for those of you that

welcome a more challenging walk, there is plenty of scope for hill walking here too.

With a population of around 500 Red Deer that roam freely within the Deer park enclosure, they shouldn’t be too hard to spot.

TOP TIPS FOR A WINTER PLAYDATE

Let’s be honest a winter playdate fills us all with a little bit of dread, as children being cooped up in a house always has its challenges - especially when they are tired after a school day and the nights are drawing in. Anna Collins, shares her tips for hosting a calm post-school playdate. n In the days before the playdate, suggest a few ideas to your child. For example ask them to tell their guest(s) to bring dressing up clothes, their favourite doll or latest Lego creation. This gives them something to focus on. n Try to start with a tidy house to at least set some kind of precedent! Kids will definitely not bother being tidy if it’s messy to begin with. n Expect excitable behaviour at the beginning! The children will have been talking about it all day (or week!). Engage in questions with the guest children to calm things (your child will love that you make an effort with their friend(s). n If you can let them outside for just 15 minutes before the dark to run off initial excitement then do. If you can steer them straight to a back garden, before they take their outdoor gear off, it will stop them

getting too settled. If they won’t go out then how about a quick round of musical bumps to get rid of some energy? n Keep it short and sweet! Don’t be tempted to go beyond 6pm. Tiredness will kick in and tantrums will happen if it goes on too late. n Don’t aim to get any other chores done while the playdate is in action n Let them go up to their rooms: it’s usually part of the ritual. Let them have a bit of space, but keep an ear out (cup of tea time for you?). n Be enthusiastic and show an interest in their game playing. If you start off on a good note with them, you’re more likely to gain their respect and retain control if any really monkey-ish behaviour kicks in. n Suggest a simple board game. Suggest it, leave it out for them and they’ll probably come round to playing it of their own accord.

n Try to give your child hosting responsibilities using directions like ‘Ryan, bring your guests to the table and show them where to sit’. It works much better than shouting at them all to come for tea five times. n Have tea ready early (4.30pm?) to avoid hunger pangs and stroppy behaviour. You’ll also end up tidying the table earlier – maybe even before the playdate is finished if you’re lucky! n Make food easy. Other parents understand that pizza is the meal of the day on a playdate. Don’t worry about providing organic vegetables and free-range chicken cooked from scratch! This is one time you need food quick and easy, quick to cook and quick to tidy up! n If tea-time is chaotic, then introduce some light competition. Simple maths sums and spellings can work a treat and most children will eagerly engage.

Obviously keep it to a few questions and don’t over-do it. n Don’t hold back in pointing out the rules of the household if needed. It is your house and other children need to show respect for that. n Expect a messy house by the end of the playdate. It’s advisable to make no plans following the playdate, other than perhaps some pamper time for Mum (or Dad!) . n If a film, TV show or the iPad emerges, best to keep it post-tea to settle children before pick up time. n Finally, home time! Give yourself a pat on the back – you made it through!

When you're planning your child's celebration, factors to take into consideration include your child's age and interests, the size of your house (and credit card limit), and your stamina levels. Here are some pros and cons to help you work out what type of party would suit you best.

Home party Pros: the DIY approach is great for babies and toddlers - adults usually outnumber the children.

Cons: not necessarily the cheap option you might imagine, especially if you go for an entertainer.You need plenty of room, tables and chairs. It takes at least a day to buy and make the food and then there's clearing up afterwards.

Tip: under-threes are too young for games or magic shows, but if you want to push the boat out, music and face painting go down well.

Party in a hall Pros: the mess is not at home! You could invite the whole class and have a magician or a dance party (check the venue's rules on noise), a bouncy castle or soft play equipment. Many halls are used by playgroups during the week.You can often hire the toys and equipment for a small fee.

Cons: large parties and big rooms can be overwhelming for little people. Do hire some professional entertainment.You start out grumbling about the cost; by the end of the party, you're kissing their feet.

Tip: if you're short on helpers, visit www.familiesonline.co.uk to find manpower. Childminders, au pairs or nursery nurses are often willing to help out at babysitting rates.

Sleepovers Pros: inexpensive and hugely popular, especially with those into double figures.

Cons: ration sweets and veto violent video games or you'll have tantrums and tiaras all night long. Keep an eye on the action: I have lost my nerve since a seven year-old and his friends decided to pee into balloons and make 'water bombs'. Perhaps you should dig out that old baby listening device?

Tip: don't forget the golden rule: invite more than four children and at least one will be sick.

Experience days Pros: a brilliant solution when they have outgrown parties and you have outgrown sleepovers, but you still want a special celebration with lasting memories.

Cons: cost means this will probably be a solo event, or a day shared with just one friend. Ooh, the politics!

Leisure centre or indoor playzone package Pros: a really cost-effective, stress-free way to put on a party. Some deals include venue, entertainment, food and party bags all-in.

Activity party (eg bowling, makeover, drama, pottery) Pros: popular with 7-10s, who are too cool for puppets but still need to be entertained. The activity can create the going home present.

Cons: when you write the invitations, remember not everyone shares your child's passions. She may adore streetdance but will some friends mob it up?

However, three-generational holidays with grandparents, parents and children in tow are growing in popularity – with ‘3G’ the new buzzword in the travel industry. Holiday company Mark Warner reported a 12% rise in popularity in ‘3G getaways’ in the last five years, while a new poll by Owners Direct, a holiday rental company, says that 20% of us are regularly holidaying with our own parents and children together.

Travel to ski and many of my friends and colleagues have also done the same in recent years. Making the most of our last summer before we were tied down to school holidays, we took our own 3G break last summer to The Point in Polzeath in Cornwall, with our parents and two daughters, aged four and one. Located just 15 minutes walk from the scenic beach at Polzeath, we spent many sandy days watching the surfers, eating ice creams and building sandcastles. For any budding surfers, Polzeath is a brilliant place to learn, with many schools dotted along the seafront with wetsuit-clad types riding the waves from dawn until dusk. This beach is thought to be one of the safest places to learn to surf and the fine golden sand and shallow rock pools make it a child’s paradise.

The Coastal Path (just 100 metres away), has breath-taking views of the scenery and follows the cliff top westwards to Daymer Bay and onto Rock, where the foot ferry crosses to Padstow. We took a day trip here and the children loved the ferry ride and a trip to the nearby Lobster Hatchery, whilst the adults enjoyed a picturesque walk along the harbour, which is dotted with galleries and cafes. We all happily tucked into fish and chips from Rick Stein’s famous family-friendly fish and chip shop.

There are a vast number of picturesque walks for all ages along the North Cornwall coast, for everyone to enjoy. We packed up the littlest member of the family into a back carrier and enjoyed a two-anda-half-hour stroll from The Point to Lundy Bay, through some stunning countryside and along the South West coastal path and the beach itself. Our hosts also mentioned a walk to Port Isaac inland through St Minver and curving through farmland.

However, at just over 13 miles, we felt this would be an ask too far for the children.

We have learnt through our various trips, that it is always worth trying to not be too ambitious when it comes to outings and day trips, to keep potential stress at bay!

The key to getting 3G holidays right is the accommodation and self-catering is always a great option because you can eat flexibly, with children eating earlier if necessary – we have often found that hotels do not start to serve food for children until 6pm and this is too late for our two. The Point features seven Scandinavian-style bespoke holiday homes, along a range of older holiday rental properties on-site. We stayed in the spacious and uber-comfortable Bailey, which offers spacious open-plan living with floor to ceiling sliding doors leading onto private terraces, modern and light furniture and plenty of small touches and attention Telephone: 01628 788058

to small details, that never go unnoticed!

Built into the hill ridge the homes are clad with Kebony, a sustainable alternative to hardwood, whilst inside the homes, there is stone flooring and woodburners built by local craftsmen. Unlike our 3G ski break, where the chalet was cramped, The Point had enough space for everyone to go off and do their own thing in privacy and I think this is a must-have for multigenerational breaks. If you have a fourlegged family member along for the ride, three of the houses are dog-friendly.

We have also found that holiday accommodation with activities on-site are

great, so everyone can go off and do their own thing if they wish. The Point has its own 18-hole golf course and health club with a swimming pool, studio classes and a sauna and steam room. Our little ones went mad for the pool, which was perfect for rainy days, whilst I tried a couple of classes. There is also a small spa on-site offering massages, facials, manicures and pedicures for an indulgent treat.

My four-year-old still talks all the time about our trip to the seaside – a sure sign that the holiday was a big success, with many magical memories banked to talk about for years to come.

...TIPS FOR 3G HOLIDAYS...

l Plan ahead: If you have children at school, you will need to plan well in advance to find a week that works for everyone. Organising a 3G holiday six to nine months in advance means that everyone can lock it into their diaries and you will have a good choice of options. l Pick a place for all: Not all holiday destinations were created equal, so put extra time into planning and research so you choose somewhere that everyone will enjoy. Self-catering tends to be a more affordable alternative to hotel breaks, with the added bonus of being able to eat in or out, depending on what everyone wants to do. Try to choose somewhere that will have enough space for everyone to enjoy some privacy. l Set boundaries: Always keep the lines of communication clear and iron out any sticky issues before heading off. Just because the grandparents are in tow, doesn’t automatically make them babysitters. If you would like a night out double-check with grandparents that they are happy to look after the little ones.

l Plan your routine: It can be a challenge to get everyone up and out in time for something, so every evening, make sure you have a plan for the following day. Do not try to cram too much in – one activity or outing per day tends to be enough. l Make the most of group discounts: When it comes to days out and visits to attractions, always ask if you are eligible for any discounts or special offers. It never hurts to ask!

l Be mindful of others: Think about everyone when choosing activities. Small children will need plenty of time to rest and will always get hungry at inconvenient times and older folk might also welcome some afternoon downtime!

l Make memories: Most of all relax and enjoy your holiday together and enjoy trying new activities and spending time together.Your shared experiences will be stories you talk about for a long time afterwards!

Parenting Fun in the snow Of course, snow in January isn't guaranteed, but if it does snow you have the ideal excuse to wrap up warm and organise snowman building contests and a monster snowball fight. Kids of all ages love playing in the snow, but have you ever played tug of war? Or tried snowball dodgeball? Once that snowman is built, try frisbeeing a hat onto his head or play a game of pin the nose on the snowman using a carrot. And everyone can join in a simple game of tag, made a little more interesting if you're only allowed to use the footprints of the other players!

Create rock pets The best way to blow away the cobwebs during January is to take the family for a long winter walk. It's great exercise, but it's even more fun if you make your walk an excuse to collect items for some winter crafting.

Once the excitement of Christmas is over and gone, it can often feel like a real struggle for the whole family to keep things fresh and lively at the beginning of a new year.

However, there are so many opportunities for you to do things together as a family - both indoors and out - that you'll soon banish the January blues!

Here are a few ideas to keep in mind‌ A family read-in When it's blowing a gale outside, there's no better way to spend an afternoon than snuggled up with a good book. For younger children you can encourage them to act out the story and show off your full range of funny faces and voices. For older children, take the opportunity to discuss what they're reading in some depth - talk about plot and characters and why they enjoy a particular type of book. Who knows, you may even inspire them to try writing their own story!

Family Bake-Off Who doesn't love the Great British Bake Off? Those grey January days offer the perfect opportunity to get into the kitchen and bake up a storm. enjoy a real opportunity to spend some creative time together in the kitchen. For older children, encourage some healthy competition by going 'full Bake off' and seeing who can produce the best cookies or cupcakes.

Get creative in the garden Outdoor crafts are a wonderful way to liven up the garden for pennies, using materials you can find outdoors or simply lying around the house. It's amazing how ice, berries and watercolours or food colourings can transform tap water into beautiful ice baubles to decorate the garden when set in interesting moulds. Or spread peanut butter all over the outside of an empty toilet roll holder or that piece of over crunchy toast, then roll in birdseed to create an instant feeder that the kids can hang near the kitchen or living room window. Add a bird book and they can pass a few hours identifying and logging the birds that come to visit. Just make sure they wrap up warm!

Find a talking stick Another interesting find on your walk might be a stick that transforms, with the help of some beads, feather, paint and markers into a wish stick for younger children or a talking stick for the older members of your tribe. Talking sticks have a long history in tribal cultures as a way of allowing everyone to have their say - you can only talk when holding the stick - so, for larger families, this could be an ideal way for your kids to create something that will ensure they're heard.

Look to the heavens On a clear night, there's nothing better than wrapping up warm and heading outside to stargaze. Download an app and see how many constellations you can find and identify.Younger children will enjoy spotting stars and older ones can test their astronomical knowledge.

Have a tech-free day Be brave and ban iPads, smartphones and games consoles for the day. Instead put out a pile of blank paper, pens and craft materials and see what your children can create. Boredom can be the best motivator for creativity.

Revive the art of den building For younger children, provide blankets, boxes and furniture indoors while encourage older children to get outdoors and get den building in the garden or the woods. Find out who's the Bear Grylls of the family and who can create the best fantasy castle/spaceship/dragon's belly. Den building is for everyone, so get involved!

MAKING A MARK IN THE EARLY YEARS

All children have the right to be provided with the best possible start to their education and parents should expect their local nurseries to create a positive, welcoming Early Years environment that is both lively and stimulating.

F

rom a young age children observe the adults around them reading and writing and want to copy them. One of the roles of an Early Years setting is to provide various activities which support children to develop the important skill of mark making.

Mark making is the first scribbles and patterns of a crayon or pencil and represents the first step in the journey towards being able to write.

All children enjoy experimenting with making marks but it’s important that the emphasis is not placed on teaching a child how to hold a pencil correctly. Invariably a young child will not have developed the motor skills necessary to achieve the correct pencil grip. Instead, they need to be encouraged to undertake activities which will encourage the development of their gross and fine motor skills to the level required to begin to write competently.

They will then develop the correct pencil grip naturally.

The more opportunity your child has to develop large and small movements in their arms, hands and fingers, the better. This will make it easier to make marks with a variety of tools.

It is important that Early Years settings constantly provide the following play activities which help develop the skills to support children with mark making: Throwing and catching balls of different sizes and using their hands to squeeze things. This encourages children to open and close their hands one at a time.

Fastening buttons and zips and tearing tissue paper and newspaper. This teaches children how to touch each finger with the thumb of the same hand.

Stirring with a large spoon and rolling out play dough. This gets children used to rolling each wrist in turn.

Threading large beads, hanging up clothes with pegs, making towers with blocks, Duplo or Lego, doing simple jigsaw puzzles, playing with castanets and using finger puppets all familiarise children with the tripod grasp that they will need to use to hold a pencil correctly.

When it comes to having a baby, how do you tackle the mountain of information available on ‘how to do it!’?

Anna Collins shares the tips that helped when her first baby was just a few months old.

I

t is an exciting but daunting time bringing a newborn home.Your life is turned upside down, you are exhausted and you need to work out the best way to get this little baby into a routine that suits him and you. Is it a blessing that there is a mountain of information out there or do you feel perplexed as you try and digest different opinions on how to do it?

We have access to so much information now, from Gina Ford's ‘The New Contented Little Baby’ 'book which goes through a specific regime in great detail or Tracy Hogg’s 'Secrets of the Baby Whisperer' which focuses on communication with your baby, and of course there is the abundance of online information out there. There is also the advice handed down to us from grandparents, yet these are often outdated in our research-rich world of today. It is hardly surprising that the early days can be mind-boggling at a time when most parents are sleep-deprived and struggling to make their own dinner!

Embrace natural instinct Before you get too bombarded with external ideas, take one day at a time with your newborn and try to listen to your

natural instinct. It is there and was there for our ancestors who had little or no access to all the books or the world-wide web we have now. Try to go with the flow and enjoy getting to know one another.

Even if you feel like you are just covering the basics: feeding, facilitating sleep, nappy changing, the rest should follow in time. I remember feeling relieved I didn’t have to worry about solid food to start with!

Focus on one or two sources that work for you Once you and your baby are a little more settled, you could start to look at one or two sources of information to help develop a routine. Don’t go overboard though, keep things simple.

Be flexible and not too hard on yourselves You may eventually decide that you are going to follow a specific book or an idea.

Just don't be too hard on yourself if you don’t follow your chosen path to a ‘T’ and be prepared to flex things to work for you and your baby.

Maybe focus on one or two gem ideas You may also find that you come across a couple of gem ideas that work for you. I

picked up the idea of doing a 10.30pm 'dream feed' in the early days, which meant feeding your baby at that time even if they were asleep. This seemed to encourage an overall routine, which worked for us.

Some ideas work for some babies and not for others – but you may just find that something that works for you.

Other people's opinions Anyone who has been a parent will have an opinion. Some people may have a great suggestion which you decide to follow. But remember, you are the only ones who really know your child. If they are happy, sleeping and feeding well and in a way that works with your lifestyle then that is what matters. And remember, it can take a bit of time getting those basics in place.

Enjoy your baby Whether you pick a whole book to follow, find a couple of gem ideas, follow your own mother’s guidance or simply decide to follow your natural instinct, you will connect with your baby and eventually develop a workable routine for your family.

One thing is for sure: all babies are different and what works for one won’t for another!

She Means Business...

What did you use to do?

I used to work as a Clinical Trials Manager, running clinical trials in the pharmaceutical industry for more than 20 years. I’m happy to say it’s a job that I loved, though I’m glad not to be doing it now!

What inspired you to set up the business?

Well, my passion for yoga inspired me to become a yoga teacher.

Actually, becoming a yoga teacher had always been a dream of mine, since I first discovered yoga whilst completing my PhD in Human Nutrition at the University of Southampton. However, once I started working in the pharmaceutical industry, in a demanding job that also involved a lot of travel, taking the time to study yoga wasn’t really an option. Over time, I began to question my work-life balance and then being made redundant allowed me the opportunity to re-train.

Long-time yogi and local Mum, Dr Amanda Costello turned her passion for yoga from a hobby into a business so that she could spend time at home with her son.

Who are you and where do you live?

My name is Amanda Costello and I live with my husband, Andy and our 6 year old son, Will along the Jubilee River in Taplow.

Why did you set up the business / or why have you changed career?

I decided to train as a yoga teacher shortly after having my son in December 2010 at the age of 43. And so I began a 2 year teacher training course with the Friends of Yoga Society International, also known as FRYOG, in September 2011. Throughout our training a small group of us met with our tutor in Windsor for one full day every month when wet were given a schedule of reading and essay writing along with teaching practise to be completed before our next monthly tutorial. I must say it really was hard work at times but I thoroughly enjoyed my teacher training course and wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone thinking of training as a yoga teacher!

What are your plans for the future?

Well, more yoga of course, whilst making more time to appreciate the simple things in life. I am open to adding more classes to my schedule as well as wanting to continue my professional development by attending further teacher training. It’s important as teachers to continue with our own learning so that we can strengthen our knowledge and have more to offer our students. I have recently started teaching classes for a mental health charity in addition to my regular five classes a week in Burnham, Taplow and Windsor. I truly feel incredibly privileged to meet so many lovely people through yoga and to share the wonderful and numerous benefits that yoga brings to people’s lives! I also really need to set up my own website... so watch this space!

What would be your advice to other business women?

When I first set up my classes, I would go out to teach not knowing whether anyone would actually turn up...and sometimes no-one did! But then slowly and steadily class numbers increased and now I get new enquiries on a weekly basis. My advice would be, as written by the 13th century Sufi mystic and poet, Jalal ad-Din Rumi, “Let yourself be silently drawn by the strange pull of what you really love. It will not lead you astray”.

Passion fuels Amy’s business ‘Dance Inspired’. After studying psychology & dance at the University of Winchester and a year at work in a corporate office, Amy decided a business in teaching dance was the route for her and hasn’t looked back.

Who you are and where do you live?

My name is Amy Opalko and I have lived in Maidenhead from a young age. I actually started studying dance in Maidenhead myself when I was just 4 years old. It’s great to teach myself in and around an area I know so well.

Why you set up the business/or why have you changed career?

I set up my dance school in 2011 as a chance to be involved in something I love.

At the time there were not many street dance schools based in the area, so I saw an opportunity to focus on this style of dancing.

What did you used to do?

I was a university graduate that fell into office administration work and wasn’t really sure where I wanted to go. I was made redundant after only 1 year in the working world so decided to make use of

my dance degree (I had combined it with psychology) and decided to train as a teacher.

What inspired you to set up the business?

For me it is very simple, I loved the opportunity of getting to dance every day and inspiring others to do the same. In particular it’s great to see how dance can bring out confidence in children.

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future are to continue to provide a friendly dance school for students who want to come and learn, whether it is for enjoyment or because they want to become dancers. I have taken on-board another dance teacher too as the business has grown. Dance Inspired

What would your advice be to other business women?

Make sure you enjoy what you do and are passionate about it. The fact I love what I do makes it easier to work through the struggles that come with running your own business, but for all the lows there are lots more highs!
