Fed up of sitting in traffic or not being able to park anywhere near the school gates, which means driving hasn’t actually saved you any time? Join children around the country celebrating the benefits of walking for this year’s Walk to School week taking place 15 to 19 May during National Walking Month. Walk to School week is organised by Living Streets, the UK charity for everyday walking, and last year over 14,000 classes took part with around 400,000 children walking to school. This year’s challenge will take pupils on an imaginary journey from the dramatic skylines of the city, via rolling countryside, to charming coastal areas. Tuesday 16 May is ‘Happy Shoesday’ and children and teachers are invited to wear whatever shoes get them smiling on their walk to school, for a £1 donation. Money raised will support Living Street’s work with schools, disability groups, local communities, and campaigning work to make UK streets safer for everyone. Interested schools can register at www.livingstreets.org.uk/what-wedo/projects/happy-shoesday

More than 150 young people were presented with various certificates from the Award Scheme Development and Accreditation Network (Asdan), Bronze, Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards and National Indoor Climbing Award Scheme (NICAS), at the awards ceremony at the Magnet Leisure Centre, Maidenhead. Awards were presented to pupils from Altwood, Claires Court, Newlands Girls’, The Windsor Boys’ and Windsor Girls’ Schools as well as Manor Green and Beech Lodge Schools. Also receiving awards were members of 4 Marlow Road Youth Centre, Riverside Girls Group, Pinkneys Green Youth Centre, the Outdoor Education Project and Windsor Youth Club. Cllr Natasha Airey, lead member for children’s services said: “For some of our young people, the journey over the past year has involved sacrifice, hard work and overcoming personal challenges. I was delighted to see the positive work they have done to get here. Every one of the awards is well earned and well deserved.”

Breastfeeding Network celebrates its 20th year! The breastfeeding charity enabling mothers and families to make informed decisions about breastfeeding and to access help when they need it, is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year!

"I saw somebody almost immediately, and was given lots of helpful and reassuring advice". Mel, mum to 7 day old baby.

For a new mum deciding how to feed her baby, talking to a mum who knows about breastfeeding can make a crucial difference and the Breastfeeding Network strives to provide peer support and give mums confidence in their choices. Breastfeeding support groups offer the opportunity to speak with mothers, who in addition to their training, have experience of breastfeeding their own baby, which enables them to provide evidence based information and practical support.

The network has 6 dropins a week with at least one on every day within Windsor and Maidenhead, all run by trained volunteers. Working closely with the health visiting team and the children centre staff ensures they offer the best support possible. The network’s volunteers also answer calls on the National Breastfeeding Helpline, which is open 9:30am – 9:30pm 365 days a year on 0300 100 0212.

"It was great talking with Katie. I really appreciate the advice and time that was spent with us" Nas, Mum to 3 week old baby.

Just 16% of parents score full marks in 11 Plus Quiz

Are you as smart as an eleven year old? That’s the question Explore Learning has been asking Families readers across the country. The leading extra tuition provider quizzed more than 5,600 parents to see how they fared with the types of questions that thousands of primary school pupils face every year in their 11 Plus exams. Just 10% of parents scored full marks, whilst a quarter failed to achieve even 50% - a testament to the level of ability and skill that is required to pass the challenging entrance exams. 11 Plus style exams cover a range of styles of questioning including verbal reasoning, non-verbal reasoning, numerical reasoning and literacy skills. Explore Learning run a comprehensive 11 Plus and Entrance Exam course for children. Tutors take a relaxed approach where each lesson includes activities to boost confidence and eliminate anxiety. They also run open sessions with parents to give guidance on how to support children through the exams.

Daddy Pig chosen to be BookTrust’s latest Ambassador

BookTrust, the UK’s largest children’s reading charity has revealed Peppa Pig’s Daddy Pig as their latest high profile Ambassador. The unique partnership sees the much-loved pig support the children’s reading charity, helping to encourage families to enjoy reading together and develop an appreciation for stories and books. CEO of BookTrust Diana Gerald said: “We’re thrilled to have Daddy Pig on board. Having him support our core message of reading for pleasure is wonderful and influencing better reading habits is something we’re incredibly passionate about” Rebecca Harvey, Head of Global Marketing at Entertainment One Family, who manage the Peppa Pig brand said: “It is a privilege that Peppa Pig can have such a positive impact on early years learning and we hope this initiative will inspire a lifelong love of reading."

Cookham School calls for sponsorship

A group of parents from Holy Trinity C of E School in Cookham are looking for people to sponsor a mum in Ethiopia this Spring. They are all Ambassadors for a charity called PFC Ethiopia (www.pfcethiopia.org), which helps children in impoverished communities in Ethiopia. PFC Ethiopia Ambassador and Media Hub cofounder Sarah Parfitt established a link between her sons’ school in Cookham in Berkshire and Gende Tesfa School in Ethiopia back in March 2015. After 12 fundraising events, £14,000 has been raised so far, funding feeding 75 children at the Breakfast Club in Gende Tesfa and the construction of a sports ground. Sarah says “I self-funded a trip to Gende Tesfa last November. It was wonderful to meet the kids who are now having breakfast every day! The next phase of the project is to fund the parents of all the children at the Breakfast Club so that the project becomes sustainable. We would love local families and businesses to get involved.” For more information or for sponsorship visit: http://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fund/woman2woman Or contact Sarah on sarah_parfitt@mail.com 07900 411715

PREPARING KIDS FOR SATs

Last May Mrs Thom, a primary school teacher in Reading, became unexpectedly famous after the surprising homework she set her Year 6 class – a couple of days before SATs – spread on a spectacular scale, striking a chord with worried parents and students across the country. The note to her pupils stated “it is vital that you use your time this weekend wisely”, continuing with a to-do list of activities that included “eat Haribo or ice cream”, “laugh until your tummy hurts” and “run until you just can’t any more”. Former Year 6 teacher Jacqui Bevan agrees that finding the right balance is “the key to child success and adult sanity” when it comes to SATs. The Cheshirebased mum of two, who now works as a tutor and runs SATS isfaction, producing support packs for parents and children preparing for SATs, says: “There is a huge amount of pressure but hours and hours of revision at home in the run-up

8

will only add to that. An hour and a half should be the maximum each week and it is all about giving children the opportunity to see what they’re going to be asked to do, to practice, and to gain confidence.” So how can you help with that preparation and maximise the chances of your child’s first real experience of exams being a positive one? Start early “Practice makes perfect and if a child doesn’t start getting secure with a particular aspect of the curriculum until nearly May, they’re not going to have seen it many times or become familiar with the different ways it can be presented in a SATs paper,” Jacqui points out. Starting ‘revision’ from September also avoids an unsettling sense of urgency as SATs get closer. If they’re already looming fast, don’t panic – there is still plenty you can do. Get to grips with current methods Most parents have been there,

FAMILIES Thames Valley East

trying to assist with homework only to be told: “We don’t do it like that at school!” The methods for the likes of long division are completely different to how they were taught in the past – but there are companies like SATS isfaction and online resources specifically aiming to bridge that gap. Some schools also offer information sessions for parents, or speak to the teachers directly. Practise the easier bits too It’s tempting to concentrate on the areas your child struggles most with but Jacqui advises always alternating with their stronger points to give them a boost. “With numeracy, start with place value,” she recommends. “It’s the cornerstone so they have to know it to be able to build on it, but also the chances are they are already confident with it, and will feel far happier going forward if they’ve mastered their first sample questions.” Short and sweet Teachers will be gearing up for SATs so children will have been challenged in school and will be tired. If they have more energy at weekends, make the most of that – but 40 minutes on Saturday and 40 minutes on Sunday is enough. “If your child is very reluctant to sit down and engage with it, the last thing you want to do is force them,” Jacqui says. “Approach it like you did when they were 5 – find ways to weave the questions into a reallife context, turn them into a game or a competition.” Don’t sacrifice the fun stuff Keep going to Cubs, swimming – whatever extra-curricular activities your child enjoys. “The only reason your child should have to give something up is if they’re doing too much and are exhausted,” Jacqui states. “You don’t want them to hate SATs revision because it’s making them miss the things they love.” Use real SATs material You might be amazed at some of the terminology used in SATs Year 6 children are expected to identify modal verbs and

MAY/JUNE 2017

auxiliary verbs, and some numeracy questions are presented as written problems, so they have to work out the maths that needs to be done before actually attempting it. The more exposed they are to these kind of questions, the more comfortable they will be with what is being asked. “It’s also about getting them used to a test situation,” Jacqui explains. “They need the confidence to skip a tough question and return to it if it’s going to use up too much time, and to understand that they can pick up marks for showing their working even if they don’t reach the answer.” Mind the teacher’s toes! With major curriculum changes in recent years, there are only two previous papers to attempt as relevant practice papers. The chances are that schools will want to use those as blind tests, which are very valuable to teachers. To avoid skewing those results, look for practice questions distributed as samples or independently created by schools or educational organisations. When SATs week arrives School will inevitably tell you to ensure your child has a decent breakfast and a good night’s sleep ahead of the tests. The latter can be easier said than done, particularly if they are nervous about what is to come. Fall back on all the tips you tried and tested when they were toddlers – plenty of fresh air and exercise, but not right before bed, a bath and book (not revision notes!) and no screens on in the bedroom. If your child is likely to get very anxious, invest time early in some basic breathing exercises (inhale slowly through your nose – pause – exhale through your mouth) or look at some of the many mindfulness tools available for children, from books and CDs to apps. And don’t forget Keep it all in perspective. In the words of Mrs Irvine of Rotherham, another teacher whose encouraging advice to SATs pupils went viral last year: “When you were born, no one said ‘What I want most is for my child to reach Age Related Expectation in Maths when they hit Year 6’!”

BRITISH SUMMER CAMPS FOR KIDS

A long-established tradition in the USA, summer camps are now readily available across the UK for all ages. British parents have found that packing their youngsters off for a few days or weeks of stimulation and entertainment is the perfect answer to the annual conundrum: "what will the kids do with their long summer break?" For working parents, the concept is a godsend. The great news is that the children love it too.

A

lthough sport and adventure are heavily featured, not all camps cater to active mini-athletes. For the less boisterous, there are art and academic options, technology and performing arts. If your child loves dancing, motorbiking, film-making or computing, there is bound to be a camp to suit and build their skills, and they vary in length from one-off days to several residential weeks. Finding one that suits you A good place to research all the activities on offer, from archery to zorbing, is the British Activities Providers Association, which lists and gives accreditation to over 100 summer camps in the UK and Europe. Two well-known British providers are Outward Bound and the Youth Hostel Association. The Outward Bound Trust caters to 11-19 year olds in residential camps, and the YHA holds themed camps for 10-19 years with accommodation in their own hostels. Younger children are accepted by xkeys.co.uk from 6 years, and at ATE t from 8 years. Fun might include scuba diving, football or quad biking. The so-called "Bear Grylls effect" has led to a lot of kids (and their parents) enjoying the idea of learning survival skills and coping with the great

W

outdoors. Over-10s can bivouac under the stars in the Lake District, and coasteering, bush tracking, den-building and bonfires are all popular. If your 9 - 15 year old is an adrenalin junkie, they will relish the cliff jumping and sea swimming at the Isle of Man Venture Centre. Day camps are great too Not all kids are comfortable with the prospect of being away from home and this is where day camps are ideal. Camp Beaumont is the leader in this field with over 40 choices and they run all through the summer from 8.30am to 5.30pm. At The Academies, day camps for 3-17 year olds, offer such clubs as "Mad Scientists" or "Groovy Gardeners" and teens can brush up their UCAS applications or learn to coach the young ones, which is great for CVs. Would-be rock stars can sign on to KZR! Music, where a 2-day music course costs £120. Another day camp operator is Fire Tech. They are based throughout England for 9-14 year olds and cover such subjects as video game development and mobile app design. We may think of camps as featured in American movies with lots of strenuous sports, s'mores by the fire, and friendly competition, but these

days the cerebral is celebrated, just as much as the physical. Learning a new language is a popular camp choice, and some parents elect to fly their children overseas to brush up on their French, German or Spanish. It's even possible to go to Shanghai or Beijing and learn mandarin. Of course, hanging from zip wires, pushing the boundaries of courage and competence and trying new things will always be top reasons to consider a summer camp, and companies like PGL, like to combine activities for their teens and tweens. Creativity and adventure can go hand-in-hand on their seven day courses with mornings spent fencing and evenings doing photography. Cost is obviously a consideration for most families, especially when they have more than one child to pay for. Many companies offer Childcare Vouchers and in addition, they give discounts for multiple or early bookings. Some even offer scholarships or reduced rates for special circumstances. The benefit of going off to camp for the average child is the phenomenal boost to their self-esteem and independence. It can be a little daunting for parents to let them go off on their own, knowing they will not be

there to soothe and reassure should anything go wrong. However, this is just the character-building part of the experience which allows children to flourish and find their own confidence. Most camps will team younger children with an older "mentor" who will keep a special eye on them, and provide that all-important cuddle if necessary. Tempting though it may be to call and check on them all the time, it really is better to restrict contact, and encourage your child to have a positive attitude to being away. If considering a summer camp, involve your child in the selection process, so that they know what to expect, and have input into the choice. You can tailor this process to support your child's personality, for example, a shy child may be happier in a smaller group, such as those of no more than 12, at Mill on the Brue in Somerset. Ultimately, with the right preparation, a summer camp is the ideal way for your child to spend their time during that long summer holiday. Spend some time selecting, look at each camp's suitability, and be excited for your child for one of the most life-enriching experiences out there. REVIEW OF ‘THE RETREAT’ – GASTROPUB NEAR STAINES

Anna Collins and Rachel Bailey took their 6 year old sons to ‘The Retreat’, a beautiful gastropub on the outskirts of Staines. The pub was taken on by Brakspear late last year, reopening in December 2016 with a new refurbishment, including spacious extension.

W

e arrived on a sunny Saturday afternoon and were shown to a table in the newly extended area. It’s always a bit of a relief to find the tables have plenty of space between them when you’ve got children in tow! The tables were beautifully set and the new interior looked great. As you’d expect at that time of the day there were a few families with children dotted around. The boys immediately noticed the dual fuelled wood fired oven when we entered. They were very excited that they would be able to watch their food being cooked! The pub cooks many of its delights in the oven including its trout, burgers, chicken and pizza. Generally speaking ‘The Retreat’ does popular pub fayre well. We sat down to look at the menus and Rachel and I were immediately drawn to their extensive gin selection! However as we were with the boys, we opted for a single glass of rosé. Meanwhile they occupied themselves working through the puzzles and colouring in, although we have to admit that ‘end of term’ tiredness had kicked in so they were a little bit challenging at points! The pub’s friendly manager, welcomed us with a little Mother’s Day gift. She informed us that the pub

14

FAMILIES Thames Valley East

attracts people from areas such as Staines, Windsor, Shepperton and West London. People often come to the pub after a day out at local attractions such as Windsor Castle, Windsor Great Park, Legoland and Liquid Leisure. We then went on to order the squid and a ham hock terrine for starters as well as a selection of breads for the boys. One of the boys tried the squid claiming “the squid is lovely” (Where possible we try to introduce them to different foods!). The children’s menu includes the regular favourites and the boys had the wood-fired pizza which they hoovered up pretty rapidly. Meanwhile Rachel and I opted for the fish-pie which was delicious. Brownie and raspberry sorbet and apple and sultana crumbles were the dessert options we chose as well as brownie sundaes for the children. The desserts hit the spot. Overall the menu has a good selection and there is also a bar menu available. Outside there is a secure beer garden; a fence runs around the edge. That meant we could let the boys run off some energy. They were occupied for a good forty-five minutes and we could see them easily from our table – always a bit of relief for parents. I think we can honestly say the children had a lovely evening.

MAY/JUNE 2017

The pub hosts a number of events including rack attack (spare ribs and BBQ sauce) on Tuesday evenings, steak night on Thursday evenings (the steak is sourced from Smithfield market!), 2 for 1 pizza on Sunday evenings, Sunday lunch and there’s live sports on most days. Some of these evenings are very popular so it’s worth booking in advance. There are also events such as Mother’s Day and the pub welcomes weddings, christenings and parties (including children’s parties). Food can be tailored to suit the occasion. Also, kids go free 12-3pm on week days including the school holidays which is great! You could visit the pub with children or for a night out with friends. The boys went home happy with full tummies and were rosy-cheeked from running around the garden. Rach and I enjoyed our meals and I think we will be back to try out that gin selection more thoroughly next time! CAMPING WITH KIDS

........Outdoors........

Camping with kids can be both fun and challenging in equal measure. It can be both an incredibly rewarding experience and a chance to spend some quality time together and bond with your little ones. Just don’t expect it to be relaxing… Barry Puddephatt shares some of his top tips on camping and how to make it as stress-free as possible

2. Check the weather Adverse weather can really affect a camping trip so check ahead. On the first night I camped with our son I didn’t do this and we ended up experiencing a thunderstorm! It took him a little while until he was ready to try it again. 3.The first trip away… When you are finally ready to hit the road with your little one, remember these key things: l Do your research – there are so many campsites available with a variety of facilities. For the first trip opt for one that has good facilities and is secure. Some of the campsites out there even have family bathrooms so you can keep to a routine and make sure there is a playground! l Don’t travel too far – with so much choice there is no need to travel several hours to go camping. Keep the first trip to a maximum of 30 minutes from home just in case you need to get back quickly Telephone: 01628 788058

l Keep it to 1 night – there is a real temptation to ‘make a weekend of it’. You can still get a lot of time away by heading out on the Saturday morning and doing something before getting to the campsite. Just try to pack light! l Use a simple tent – you don’t want to spend 2 hours fighting with poles and guy-ropes when you get to the campsite. Pick an easy tent so you can maximise your time together 4. Research the activities It’s a good idea to make sure there are some things you can do away from the campsite. This could be something like renting a row boat, going to the zoo or going swimming. Just be aware that younger kids aren’t going to be happy sitting around the campsite relaxing like you want to. That said it’s great to get them out in the fresh air as much as possible and cut down on the inevitable screen time they might get at home. 5. Roast those marshmallows Roasting marshmallows with the kids is one of the most enjoyable aspects of camping. Just make sure you check the rules on fires and barbecues with the campsite before you book. Most campsites will allow barbecues, but very few let you have an open fire. Either way, make sure to pack some wooden skewers before you head off. 6. Get more adventurous After the first few trips you can start to get a bit more adventurous. I remember as a kid camping without any of the mod cons they have at the campsites today. There are places out there

that embrace this philosophy – get the kids back to nature and ‘rough it’ a bit – you might be surprised at how much they enjoy it! 7.There’s always glamping… If you are anything like my wife, then the prospect of camping might not have you jumping for joy, so there are some other options. Glamping has become more widely available in the last few years and a lot of places offer

either glamping exclusively or have some space dedicated to this. It’s quite an expensive way to do it, but you get what you pay for. No putting up the tent, proper beds, duvets, stoves and utensils, sofa, dining tables and some even have the option of a hot tub. Whatever you decide, embrace it! These trips are creating memories that will be talked about for years to come.

1. Start simple The first couple of times I camped with our son we only ventured as far as the back garden. This has the advantages of keeping them (and you) close to all the usual creature comforts and gives you a nice, easy bail out option should you need it. Just be prepared that their excitement levels reach fever pitch so getting them to sleep can be a real challenge. I’d suggest doing this a couple of times before venturing any further out. If it all works out well (and your garden is secure) you can even pop back into the house for a cheeky tipple before you go to bed.

BUYING CHILDREN’S BIKES

Buying a bike for a child can be a daunting prospect. It’s hard to say what you get for your money when you can’t even test-ride the bike yourself. And how good does a kid’s bike need to be anyway? Ben Collins takes a break from pressing his nose against the bike shop window to give us his thoughts.

Size Unlike adult bikes which are sized by frame size, children’s bikes tend to be sized by wheel diameter: if a 20” wheel fits your child, then that will probably be the case for most brands. An exception to this is Frog Bikes, whose ergonomic design ethos means that they offer different sized frames for their 20” bikes, and also their 26” wheel bikes. Most manufacturers give detailed sizing instructions on their websites, but there is no substitute for sitting the child on the bike. If we had just followed the manufacturer’s guidelines, we would have got the wrong size bike. Go and try them out.

Quality According to mountain bike pioneer Keith Bontrager, there are three things a bike needs to be: “Strong, light and cheap. Pick two”. Fortunately, strong and light are much cheaper now than when he said it. Strong and cheap is easy: steel is cheap. Is low weight important for children? Well it’s unlikely that most children can justify a carbon fibre race machine. The lighter the bike, the more fun it is to ride however and the more they’ll want to ride it. Aluminium frames are getting cheaper and cheaper, so really good bikes are more accessible now than ever before. Rod Ellingsworth –

former pro and British Cycling coach – was once asked that, given the dizzying array of frighteningly expensive components on the market, what is the best upgrade to invest in, to make a bike go faster? His answer? A decent saddle and decent shorts. That way you’re more comfortable. So you’ll ride more and that’s how you go faster… To my mind, there are three categories of bikes for children: l Toy bikes. Aimed at younger children and generally the cheapest, they are often branded with some non-bike related theme: Star Wars, Batman etc. Appealing to kids as a result, but heavy and not very ergonomic. l Gimmicky bikes. Suspension forks. Suspension rear wheel. Hydraulic brakes. Disc wheels. For the same price as a bike that doesn’t have those things. Too good to be true? Correct. Much like the toy bikes, eye catching but not ergonomic. l Normal bikes, just designed for the joy of riding a bike. Until recently, there was little choice for children. Halford’s offered their cheap but good value ‘Apollo’ range (and still do), some big brands offered small

MAY/JUNE 2017

versions of their adult bikes, and at the upper end of the market Isla Bikes produced high quality bikes designed with children in mind. This changed significantly a couple of years ago when Berkshire-based Frog Bikes developed a cheaper range of high quality aluminium bikes, with very specific child-friendly ergonomics and great colour schemes. When it came to designing bikes and components specifically for children, their attention to detail was and still is remarkable, and having recently poached a professor of sport science to head up their design team, you can expect this to continue. Some of their bikes come with a spare set of knobbly tyres, giving the option of a better off-road ride. They remain at the cheaper end of the ‘high quality’ market, although that market offers a lot more choice now that big-name cyclists have cottoned onto it: Wiggins and Hoy also have competitively priced, high quality children’s offerings. Wiggins is only available through Halfords, which rankles the more image conscious cyclist, but it does make them cheaper. In summary: Try them out. A good fit is essential for fun and safety. Lighter bikes are more fun to ride. Steel is cheap but heavier; Aluminium is lighter but more expensive. To put that into context, if you rode a bike as a child it was almost certainly steel. Did that stop you riding? We wanted our Son to have a bike that he could be excited about riding – because it’s fun to ride, not because it’s got Batman on it - and his enthusiasm for riding it has vindicated that decision. Get the best quality, lightest and least gimmicky bike you can afford. They’ll enjoy riding it more. If you want the gimmicks, get a Batman cycling helmet.

FITNESS FOR BUSY MUMS

With summer on its way, Hannah Walker from Eton Fitness offers guidance for busy mums on how to begin a fitness and weight loss journey. ith summer just around the corner, it’s that time of year people start talking about ‘toning up’ for their summer holidays, but what does this really involve?

W

to day your calories will vary, so the aim is to keep your weekly total within your calorie deficit.

‘Tone’ is the presence of muscle without fat. So in order to ‘tone up’, you will need to lose body fat and get exercising. I don’t believe in exercising or losing weight for a season, but if you want to lose some excess pounds for the summer, then make it the start of a long term lifestyle change. If you feel completely confused by all of the fat binding pills, juice diets, or the latest cleanse that pops up on your social media feed, where do you start?

If you are in a calorie deficit then you don’t need to exclude or restrict any food groups. Here are 4 simple steps to achieving a healthy, balanced diet you can fit into family life:

Establishing your calorie deficit is essential, but what foods should you eat for fat loss?

1. Fill your diet with whole foods and as much home cooked / home prepared food as you can, this avoids added sugars and unwanted calories. 2. Read ingredients lists and ignore food packaging. The packaging is a marketing tool designed to make the product look healthy and make you buy it. 3. Reduce your intake of processed food, take away food, fast food, and fizzy drinks - drink water instead, and lots of it (yes you will pee more, but your hair and skin will love you for it!). 4. Aim to consume 90% whole foods (foods of very minimal processing and high nutritional content) and 10% treats (gin and ice cream!) daily. If you aim for this ratio you will probably hit 80% whole foods and 20% treats – perfect. You have to enjoy life (gin and ice cream!) by working your 10% treats into your calorie deficit so you are not left craving or ravenously overeating the foods you love. As busy mums juggling kids, work and general life, calculating calories and balancing your diet will take time. Introducing or increasing exercise will also take time, but time you shouldn’t feel guilty about investing in your health and wellness. Your health is the best investment you can make for your family, showing your children that you value your body, your health and your future.

To lose body fat you need to be in a calorie deficit. You will need to log your calories using an app (My Fitness Pal is great), yes logging what you eat and drink, which takes time initially, but it’s nearly impossible to lose body fat if you don’t know how many calories you consume daily. Log honestly for 2-3 weeks, calculate your weekly calories, then you can see if these calories are causing you to gain or maintain weight. To start losing body fat you will need to reduce your weekly calories by 10% for at least 2 weeks to see how you get on. You can then reduce by 15% or 20% if needed, aiming to lose 1-2lbs each week. Day Telephone: 01628 788058

Here are my top 7 tips to achieving a sustainable fitness routine: 1. Make it realistic. Plan around work, family life and meals. Training 2-4 hours after eating is optimal. 2. Prioritise it. As a mum this will only happen if you prioritise it, training ideally 3-4 times each week. 3. Not every workout needs to be a full hour. If you can only squeeze in 30 minutes, you can definitely work up a sweat and contract your muscles in that time! 4. Complete a full body workout each time you exercise, especially if your training opportunities are limited. 5. Focus on the endorphins at the end. There will be days you find 101 excuses not to train, so focus on how good that workout will make you feel. 6. Enjoy it! Whatever you do, make sure you enjoy it.You will never continue doing something you don’t enjoy. 7. Don’t be disheartened. Everything new will be hard at first and there will always be someone faster, fitter and stronger than you.

To improve your fitness you will need to exercise, so what is the best exercise for fat loss? Honestly………… the one you will stick to. Be that in the gym, a fitness class, a cross fit box, or at home. If you are eating in a calorie deficit, make sure you input your exercise into your calorie counting app to avoid your calories going too low. If you are eating for maintenance and using exercise to create your calorie deficit then you won’t need to log your exercise. ........Travel........

eldest was 18 months old, us sitting in silence in the dark while we waited for him to fall asleep (or hiding out in the bathroom perched on the side of the bath with a glass of wine!). One particularly sunny evening was spent in a motel in the Canadian Rockies, all the curtains closed, balancing takeout on our knees, instead of enjoying the beautiful views and the sunshine outside the next door restaurant! Site amenities Do you want things for the kids to do on site? Would it help to have a pool? This is often a consideration if holidaying abroad, but many cottages in this country also have on site facilities such as pools, parks, soft play areas and tennis courts. Some farmstay cottages even have opportunities to feed the animals, tractor rides, nature walks etc. All these things can be great for those days when you don't feel like rushing around or when the weather's not on your side. In some cases the offering is so great you might struggle to get the kids to leave the site!

PLANNING A HOLIDAY The clocks have gone forward, the days are getting longer and the evenings lighter. With the summer holidays just around the corner, Rachel Bailey takes a look at what to consider when making holiday plans. Staycation v vacation abroad Sometimes it's as much hassle driving across the country as it is taking a plane, but driving has its own advantages - you are less restricted on luggage, you have your own transport when you reach your destination and there are some fantastic places to holiday in this country. We love all that Devon and Cornwall have to offer but there's also the Lake District, Sussex coast, Norfolk, Suffolk, Dorset, Kent countryside, Isle of Wight, to name but a few. It's not always the cheaper option however and of course you can't guarantee the weather! Or in the true meaning of a 'staycation' consider holidaying at home and doing a few day trips to nearby places instead. We are so close to London which has endless possibilities to choose from including museums, parks, trips down the river and a zoo Holidaying with grandparents Taking a holiday with extended family can help make the holiday feel like more of a break, especially if you have young children as there are more people on hand to help

out. Don't assume they'll babysit, but if they're willing to do the odd night, it's a great opportunity to enjoy an evening out. It also helps spread the cost making the holiday more affordable. Plus it's a great opportunity for them to spend quality time with grandchildren in a relaxed setting away from all the busyness that takes over in our everyday lives. Just remember to manage expectations. It can be tricky trying to accommodate everyone's needs so you might want to have a discussion beforehand. Consider which things you all might want to do, whether you'll do everything together or factor in some time apart. What to look for in accomodation Does self-catering best suit your families needs? If you're abroad is all inclusive an easier option? Are you happy to stay in a hotel and if so will a family room work? Some family rooms have a separate kids area so it's a bit more manageable. We stayed in one recently where it almost felt like the kids had their own room, which was ideal! However, we have also experienced being confined to a hotel room when our

Kids clubs Whilst holiday accommodation in this country may well offer activities for kids on site, most of these require parents to participate and be responsible for their own children. In contrast, holiday accommodation abroad can include childcare in the form of kids clubs, enabling parents to spend a little time relaxing in the sun enjoying time by themselves. It can still be a family holiday that you all enjoy together, but it also gives mum and dad the option to get a bit of time to relax too! Likewise, some places offer a babysitting service if you’re comfortable leaving your children for the evening. Location Having younger children myself, access to a beach, whether in this country or abroad, is pretty high on our list of priorities. We visited Cornwall back in February and they loved running from the waves, climbing on rocks, building sand castles, hunting in rock pools and writing in the sand - the list is endless. It's all free entertainment and gives them plenty of fresh air and scope to run around. Likewise, if your kids are a bit older, a city break can be a great way to learn a bit more about different cultures or places and get them out of their comfort zone. I still remember going to Berlin with my dad when I was learning German at school. Holidays can be a great way to broaden children’s minds, it doesn’t all have to be about expensive trips to Disneyland! Above all, remember this is your time to enjoy together as a family, so don’t stress if things don’t go quite as planned (as is often the case with young children!).

........Father’s Day........

TREATING DAD Home-made fun Don’t forget that old adage that homemade is best. Kids can get creative after school and make cards, pictures and cake! What Dad doesn’t like a huge piece of cake with a few iced words of kindness on it? Or what about treating him to a cooked breakfast on the day? Get children in on the action – most love cooking once you get them in the kitchen. How about getting the kids to personalise a Father’s Day mug? Try Genevieve The Gallery in Englefield Green where you can choose from mugs, bowls, egg cups and many more and kids can add their own design. More details can be found at www.genevievesgallery.co.uk Get children involved Ask the children to think about what Dad loves to do and work out what the best experience day would be for him. It’s a chance to get children fully engaged in treating Dad. For the Dad that loves being outside you can’t go wrong with a bike ride or a walk with the family and a surprise picnic? The good news is that Father’s Day is in the summer, so alfresco picnics can work! If it does rain what about an indoor picnic that kids can help set up and make? Why not help children try the recipe for stuffed pitta bread on page 28?

THE IMPORTANCE OF SLEEP FOR CHILDREN

A

s adults, we are more than aware of how important a good night's sleep is - we need it for balance, mood stability and to enhance brain function. Anyone who has children will concur that getting a full night's sleep is essential to combat temper tantrums and tiredness, which can be traumatic for toddlers. Experts from the NHS think that as much as we should prioritise healthy eating and exercise, we should also be ensuring children get around nine hours of solid slumber nightly, to improve their learning. Particularly when they are young and acquiring knowledge on everything as they begin to shape and understand the world around them, children need a requisite amount of sleep to boost retaining information and help embed knowledge from throughout the day. Ultimately, our brains need rest overnight to allow us to absorb information better, and this is even more important for young minds. So how much sleep should they be getting? The NHS issues guidelines for optimum sleep time for different age groups have been collected by the Millpond Children's Sleep Clinic. These are: Between the ages of 4 and 16, children should be sleeping through the night for 11 hours, which gradually goes down to about 9 at 14, (with 15 minute reductions over this time). Why is sleep so important? We only need to look at some of the poor decisions or small mistakes we have made ourselves when we are tired, and we can begin to understand the importance of sleep. How many times have you started

something which you then struggled to finish, simply because of the impact tiredness has on judgement and motivation? When coupled with the vital rest time for busy, sponge-like brains, getting adequate sleep makes a lot of sense. Whether it's through using sleep aids or planning a meticulous routine, there are several ways to ensure your children are reaching the requisite sleep hours for their age group. So, how can you encourage them to sleep? Essentially, fostering a good sleeping habit is much easier with young children than teenagers, who know how to fight back! Laying the right foundations when they are young, and encouraging them to see sleep as a part of healthy living should make maintaining it, even when they have discovered the joys of socialising, much more straightforward. Routine, routine, routine Whilst they try to convince themselves and their parents otherwise, children thrive on routine, and our brains learn when to start shutting down and getting the all-important rest they need. Trying as best you can to instil a routine of preparing for and going to bed

at the same time every night will help your child, no matter what age they are. This includes brushing teeth and getting pyjamas on at a certain time, which starts to surreptitiously prepare the brain for sleepy time. Getting them settled into a routine means preparing the brain for its rest period. Limit the technology For many people, the evening routine relies on technology. Be it smartphones, tablets or television, we all, including our children, use devices to unwind with at night. However, these bits of tech are actually stimuli, which make the going to bed routine harder to implement. After dinner, try enjoying some conversation or a board game to encourage them to chat about their day and also allow

the brain some all-important decompression time. Where possible, discourage them from having TV or gadgets in the bedroom at all, as these can be used as a distraction. In fact, making sure that the bedroom is most closely associated with sleep is a better way to negotiate this obstacle which means keeping it tidy and clutter-free. The importance of light Whether it's through blackout curtains or nightlights, achieving the correct balance of light in your child's room is key to ensuring consistency in their sleep pattern. Invest in some heavy duty curtains so that whether winter or summer, their room is dark, and use a little nightlight for a subtle glow that helps orientate them if they do wake up in the night.

Berry Yogurt ice lollies

Homemade ice lollies are a lot healthier than anything bought as you can control what goes into them. They are a great way of using up a glut of fruit or making treats from frozen berries. Maple syrup replaces sugar and yoghurt works well in place of cream.

Ingredients: Makes 4 standard ice lollies... l 100g black currants, fresh or frozen l 50g blueberries, fresh or frozen l 50g raspberries, fresh or frozen l 150ml plain yoghurt l 3 tbsp maple syrup l 1 teaspoon acai powder l Juice of 1/2 lime Adapted from Beverley’s new book 500 Superfood Dishes published by Quarto.

How to make berry yogurt ice lollies …..WASH YOUR HANDS 1. Ask an adult to supervise you while you place all the ingredients into a food processor and whizz to a puree, adding more lime juice if the mixture is thick. 2. Taste the mixture to check for sweetness as black currants can be very sour, add a little more maple syrup if necessary. Transfer to lolly moulds and freeze for at least 8 hours or overnight. Creamy berry yoghurt ice lollies Add a 200ml can of coconut milk to the mixture at the end, do not mix it, just gently swirl it round to achieve a mottled effect. This will reduce the tartness of the black currants and increase the yield to 6-7 lollies. If you run out of lolly moulds fill ice cube trays for mini versions and use cocktail sticks for lolly sticks, take care with the points though.

Strawberry yoghurt ice lollies Replace the black currants, blueberries and raspberries with 200g fresh, hulled and chopped strawberries, reduce the maple syrup to 1 tbsp and add 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar, check for sweetness. Make creamy version by adding the coconut milk as above. E-mail: editor@FamiliesTVEast.co.uk

HOW TO KEEP FRIENDSHIPS GOING AFTER HAVING A BABY

her know you are thinking of her and offering to help, if needed. Maybe suggest that, as soon as she has more time, you get together for a coffee and a chat or maybe a buggy walk together. Most importantly, do not stop contacting your new mum friend. Try and remember that it is not your friend that has changed, just her circumstances.

According to mumsmeetup.com, which connects mums locally and across the UK, the majority of their members commonly complain that they have lost friends after having a baby. Here are their thoughts on how to keep friendships going: Understanding the pressures of being a new mum: Becoming a mum for the first time is a bit like being thrown into the deep end of parenting with no training. As well as

recovering from childbirth and the turmoil of life with a newborn, mums can suffer from sleep deprivation and even depression. They will not have the same time to devote to their friends as they used to, but this is not forever, it is only temporary, whilst they adjust to life with a newborn. How friends can be supportive: There are many ways friends can keep in touch with their new mum friend, such as sending texts to let

How new mums can keep in touch with friends: Maybe suggest meeting in the daytime initially, when baby is napping, or for them to accompany you on a buggy walk, as this should give you more time to chat uninterrupted. You may want to talk a lot about your baby but try not to let the conversation be all about baby let your friends update you about their lives as well. Inevitably, having a baby provides the opportunity to

SILENT VOICES – WOMEN SUFFERING WITH SECONDARY INFERTILITY Jeanette Wallis, a Maidenhead based Reflexologist & NLP Fertility Coach writes about the sensitive subject of secondary infertility. Jeanette works with The Harley Street Fertility Clinic and has treated many women helping to bring about a positive outcome. Here she talks about reflexology and NLP techniques which could help overcome difficulties conceiving. Every woman thinks and feels in a different way, but it’s easy to sink into despair when you are trying for your second child and it’s just not happening. Did you have your first child easily and have the expectation that it would be much easier next time around? Are your friends having their second child and, although you are happy for them, inside are you feeling frustrated and sad? As a consequence is your relationship suffering? And do you have any energy left for your physical relationship anyway? Most importantly have you now lost the belief you can have what you so desperately want? Telephone: 01628 788058

Reflexology can re-balance the body’s systems, enhance ovulation, improve your cycle and help alleviate physical problems such as PCOS and endometriosis. Emotional support is also crucial in making the journey to another baby much smoother, especially for patients who have to undergo fertility treatment. Treatment should look at how you think and feel, hence NeuroLinguistic programming can be a useful tool. No two women are the same and it’s important that someone listens to what you have to say (and not say). The mind can affect the physical body, and being constantly disappointed month after month is exhausting and debilitating. Don’t underestimate the benefits of looking after both your physical and emotional wellbeing. It’s about finding the support that is right for you and understanding what options are available. Case Studies “Having had our first child without difficulty, I expected that getting pregnant again would be easy. One year later, and with no baby on the way, utter despair started creeping in. I had developed very bad PMS and felt my hormones were out of control. Jeanette’s treatment helped rebalance my hormones, and I felt the difference immediately. She understood me and helped me move forwards, with a very calming and positive approach.”

make new friends. These friendships can be an invaluable support as your baby grows, as other parents can relate to the joys and pressures of parenting.

How MumsMeetUp can help mums find new friends MumsMeetUp is free for mums to use and provides a quick and simple solution for them to find others in the same boat. “Since my first child I suffered two miscarriages. I was sceptical of complementary therapies but was desperate for answers. Jeanette helped me through this difficult period both helping rebalance my hormones with reflexology, and through gentle counselling she enabled me to let go of my negativities and look forward. When I fell pregnant I worried about miscarrying again, but Jeanette came to my home and helped support me with treatment and reassurance.”

She Means Business... Charlotte Notley is a very busy mum of 2 boys, who runs Splash School in Maidenhead. She talks to Families, about the business, how she went about setting it up and offers other parents advice on going for it themselves! their swimming was thriving. This helped build my confidence. Most importantly I loved teaching and being my own boss! Within a few years I also picked up a BA Business & Enterprise (Hons) degree along the way. Looking back I’m surprised at what I have managed to achieve in such a short time frame! Who you are and where do you live? I’ve lived in Maidenhead since I was 11 years old and went to Cox Green School, so I know the local area very well. My partner and I have 2 little boys, a 5 year old and the other is just 2 months old! I know how difficult it is to juggle a business and children! Being a mum of young children, means I can relate well to our swimmers’ parents. Tell us a bit about the business? Splash School offers swimming classes at Newlands School and Manor Green School in Maidenhead. I set up the company in 2011 with just 20 swimmers, and we are growing at a fast rate and now getting daily enquires. We currently have 423 children attending our courses per week. This means running 74 classes to cater for them across 5 days. Our aim is to make children feel safe and comfortable in the water. This is achieved through a wide variety of fun games and activities and leads to achieving ‘Simple Steps to Swimming’. Children are encouraged to receive nationally recognised qualifications to show their achievements. All Splash School Instructors are ASA or STA qualified and experienced as well as being DBS checked.

What inspired you to set up the business? I love seeing children’s confidence grow as they complete their courses and gain awards. We’re teaching children a life skill and I get a real buzz from seeing their progress. I am very lucky that swimming is a passion of mine and has inspired me to set up the business. I talked about setting up my own swim school for a number of years, but what actually pushed me to take the risk is when I found out I was pregnant with my first son. It was daunting at the beginning, but having my own business has given me control and flexibility around my own children. What are your plans for the future? In April this year I decided to start offering lessons to adults as well because we were getting a large number of enquiries. This is an exciting time for Splash school and its

future growth. Splash School will continue to expand. What would your advice be to other business women? Even when your business has grown and you have a team to help, try and make time to speak to your customers directly whenever you can. I also still like to get into the pool and get stuck in with the teaching every now and then, but have learnt I can’t always do everything. You need to learn to trust that you have brought the right people on board to help you. I currently have an amazing team of 8 talented instructors that teach for me. Have a support network around you. My mum and partner have helped me make some of my biggest decisions and still to this day consistently remind me how important having a healthy work and life balance is to a person’s success. Understand your target market and competitors as this will be vital for the success of any new venture. Finally, take the risk but make sure it’s calculated and try and have the right admin systems in place as early as possible. For more info go to: www.splashschool.co.uk Thousands of ideas for things to do with the kids... from hundreds of parents across the UK.

What did you use to do? Did you change career to do this? I have always been interested in swimming and swam for the Slough Dolphins when I was young. At 16 I qualified as a life guard and at 17 I worked as a swimming teacher for other organisations. At one point I worked full time for a leisure centre as a team leader for life guards. I started to get a love for teaching and wondered if I could do it for myself. So I took the 'plunge' and set myself up teaching in the evenings. All the children seemed happy, were safe and

Local mum Helen McLean loves helping families find the right childcare solutions for them. She talks to Families about how her business Cookham Nannies and Sitters came about and her plans for the future Who are you and where do you live? My name is Helen McLean and I live in Cookham with my daughter and our dog Mollie! Born and raised in Maidenhead I know the area so well. When I had my daughter and was living in London I knew that I wanted her to grow up in East Berkshire and enjoy the wonderful countryside, schools and outdoor living that I was privileged to enjoy as a child - it wasn’t long before I made the move and returned to my roots. Tell us a bit about the business? My business is Cookham Nannies and Sitters which places exceptional and outstanding nannies and babysitters in Cookham, Marlow, Bourne End, Maidenhead and Windsor. We offer bespoke full time nannies, one day a week nannies, maternity nannies, morning only nannies, ad hoc few hours babysitting in the daytime and evening time and temporary nanny help.

listen, solve, communicate, people manage, recruit and lead. It is all of these capabilities and skills that have given me the confidence to comfortably embark on my own business. What inspired you to set up the business? Since having my own daughter, going back to the workplace and needing a nanny, I know first-hand how hard it is to find the right childcare - ‘the right fit’! Personally, I needed flexible childcare to suit a part time contract and when I couldn’t find what I needed, I decided to set up Cookham Nannies and Sitters. I am passionate about finding childcare solutions and I naturally enjoy helping other families and parents explore and find theirs. What are your plans for the future?

What did you use to do? Did you change career to do this?

I intend for Cookham Nannies and Sitters to be a very well established and successful brand in Berkshire and Buckinghamshire for childcare placements, whilst keeping its trusting, open and honest ethos. I think I’ve achieved this in Cookham where the business started and has been running for a year now and I would like the nanny side of the business to extend further afield to the surrounding areas. There is nothing more rewarding than making the perfect nanny/family connection!

I worked for British Airways for 25 years at the forefront of customer service and was responsible for leading teams to deliver exceptional service both in the air and on the ground. My years with the airline and as a manager for 20 of those years, taught me to be proactive, extremely intuitive,

I would like to think that the family I help tomorrow will always receive the same level of high customer service as yesterday. Whether that family needs a few hours sitting, a 5 day a week nanny placement, or a maternity nurse for 6 weeks, the calibre will always be high. As an

All services are tailor made to suit the individual family requirements yet willing to be flexible in its approach, reflecting the needs of the modern working parent.

absolute minimum I want to be sure I would happily leave my daughter with that person, because I know and trust their work. What would your advice be to other business women? To allow movement away from the business plan in the early days. Enable your business to find itself, its audience and mould organically in what you offer, but never compromise on how you offer - I will always strive to stay true, honest and genuine in my approach and service.
