Mind Body and Baby, Maidenhead are launching new massage classes from September for parents to enjoy introducing massage to their newborns. These relaxed and friendly classes are very special as the majority of baby massage classes are for babies from 8 weeks. Louise Prince, a mother of two, doula and trusted baby massage instructor, will be running these classes on Monday and Wednesdays at her home in Cox Green for parents of newborn babies and each class will have a different focus according to the baby’s development. Louise’s classes aim to provide baby-led sessions where parents can share parenting tips, learn effective winding routines to help colic and most importantly, enjoy enhancing their bond through touch and massage with their baby. Babies with flat head syndrome, or prefer laying one side only, those who suffer with tummy troubles or have umbilical hernias have all benefitted from these classes.

Tumble Tots to open new venues offering more local classes this autumn
Boosting Children’s Self-esteem and Life Skills with Perform
Since it began in 1979, Tumble Tots has helped over 1.5 million children to develop their physical skills of balance, agility, climbing and coordination, whilst at the same time boosting their language and social skills. This Autumn, they are opening three new venues with classes now running in Bourne End, Holyport, Lane End, Stoke Poges and Marlow. Local franchisee Helen Otto says “If we can start children on a healthy way of life early on, then it can become a habit for the rest of their lives. Exercise should be fun
Local Venues:
Perform uses drama, dance and singing to help all children achieve their true potential. Perform Producer Karen says, “Classes are small with both a producer and a teacher. Children are offered a free trial and the producer spends time beforehand with each parent establishing their goals. For instance, speaking more clearly or making eye contact when introduced to someone unfamiliar.” “Shy children often come to classes clinging to their parents. I can pretty much guarantee that within 5 or 6 classes, they will run in without waving goodbye”. Perform offer no-obligation FREE trial sessions. One Festival... Two Weekends... 5000 Free Events
Only half of pre-school children being read to daily The number of toddlers being read to daily has dropped by 20% since 2013, according to recent research. The annual ‘Understanding the Children’s Book Consumer survey’ from Nielsen Book Research found that while 69% of pre-school children were read to daily in 2013, that figure had now dropped to just 51%. The study found parents complained of obstacles preventing them from reading to their children. Nearly a fifth said it was hard to find the energy at the end of the day, whilst 16% said their child would rather do other things. One in five parents don’t feel comfortable in bookshops, and nearly half are overwhelmed by the choice of children’s books. The publisher Egmont, which co-funded the research, said the decline correlated with an increase of almost a fifth in the proportion of toddlers watching online video content daily, and warned that the “steep decline” in reading to young children “signalled a significant threat to child development, with potential long-term social impact.” More info at www.egmont.co.uk

For the first time ever England’s biggest festival of heritage and culture will take place across two weekends in 2018. Heritage Open Days, taking place 6th to 9th and 13th to 16th September, are an annual celebration of England’s architecture and culture, that allows visitors free access to historical landmarks that are either not usually open to the public, or would normally charge an entrance fee. Co-ordinated nationally by the National Trust with support from the People’s Postcode Lottery, it brings together thousands of organisations and properties across England. With a theme of ‘Extraordinary Women,’ this year’s festival will offer visitors more opportunities to discover the secret history of their towns, villages and countryside. There are hundreds of activities for kids, including dressing up, woodland walks, and railway rides.

Up until 7 years ago, Tara Mehmet lived a very different life running a successful business in the music industry, the downside of which was high stress and little balance between work and family life. She became burnt out and disconnected from her family. In search of better health and happiness, Tara discovered a simple yet powerfully effective system called Pranic Healing, which anyone can learn in just two days. Within only a few treatments she overcame crippling stress and regained physical and emotional strength. Inspired, Tara learned the techniques herself to treat her family. She also teaches others how to help themselves and their loved ones heal from common ailments like coughs, colds, tummy aches and anxieties to create brighter futures through this transformational system. www.ukpranichealing.co.uk/tara-mehmet familiesonline.co.uk

Education News St Piran’s share tips on how to make the most of a school Open Day Most schools will hold Open Days to enable as many parents as possible to see round the school. How they are run, who talks to you, who shows you round and so on will be different and will be determined, as much as anything, by the age range of the school. Senior schools, for example, will do things very differently to primary/prep schools. The most important contributors are the children you meet or who show you round. They are your benchmark as they are the ‘product’ of the school. Generally they will be the older children – sixth formers, or Year 6 or 8 depending on the leaving age of primary/prep schools. Don’t be afraid to interrogate! I always advise asking ‘How …?’ questions. They need more careful answering than the ‘Why..?’, ‘What …?’ and ‘When ..?’ type
questions. ‘How does the school support you in your learning?; How does the school deal with bullying?; How do your teachers help you when you have a friendship problem?’ If you are visiting a number of schools, have three or four standard questions you ask of each school. That will help you to compare answers. If you have been shown round by a member of staff or admissions officer on your first visit, ask to be shown round by children on your
next, or vice versa; don’t be afraid to ask! If they can’t accommodate that sort of request, it might raise some questions in your mind. Try to look past the obvious showcasing; there will always be areas that are ‘off limits’ on Open Days! Ask about future plans and intentions of the school; ‘I am sure there are parts of the school you wouldn’t want to show parents on an Open Day! What are they and how are you looking to improve those parts of the school you are least happy about?’ At St Piran’s our children are proud to show prospective children and their families around the school. Our Open Mornings include talks by the headmaster, time with teachers and admissions staff and the opportunity to spend time with current pupils and their parents. We have a number of Open Mornings throughout the year at St Piran’s, both during the working day and at weekends giving a different perspective on our school. LVS Ascot launches Junior School Diploma
The co-educational prep school in Maidenhead for children aged 3 to 11 years Small class sizes maximum of 18 children Outstanding facilities including:
LVS Ascot pupils will return to school in September ready to work towards a new, Junior School Diploma. Each section of the diploma is linked to a pair of the LVS values and skills: curiosity and creativity, resilience and risk-taking, empathy and reflection, initiative and independence and collaboration and self-confidence. The course will fully embed the values and skills into pupils’ way of life from Reception class right up to Year 6 so they can build character qualities and develop key life skills, with diplomas presented at the end of their final year before moving up to LVS Ascot senior school. Many of the suggested criteria will be met through the school’s varied enrichment programme offered by staff during the school day, but pupils can also meet the requirements through specific projects. Criteria will include items such as learning to play an instrument, contributing to school council meetings and cooking a meal for their families.
Head of LVS Ascot Infant and Junior School Rachael Cox said: “Our aim is to deliver a unique and vibrant education that inspires young people to exceed their expectations. The Junior School Diploma will reinforce that and help develop our pupils”. www.lvs.ascot.sch.uk

Should You Help with Homework? When your children settle down to do homework, do you keep close tabs on them and routinely offer to help? Or is your approach more hand’s off?
R
esearchers from Finland have found that although most homework assistance aims at helping the child, one approach is much better at instilling persistence. The study looked at children aged from 8 to 11 years and found that when parents offered opportunities for their child to work independently, that the child demonstrated an increased ability to work persistently on his or her school assignments when tested 12 months later. However, when parents provided concrete assistance to their child, the less task-persistent
the child’s behaviour later became. This in turn, made parents offer more and more help. "One possible explanation is that when a parent gives a child the opportunity to do homework autonomously, this sends out a message that they believe in their child's skills and capabilities. This, in turn, makes the child believe in him or herself, and in his or her skills and capabilities," Associate Professor, Jaana Viljaranta from the University of Eastern Finland explained. Similarly, concrete homework assistance - especially if not requested by a child - may send

out a message that a parent doesn't believe in their child's ability to do their homework. When a parent offers the child an opportunity for autonomous working, the child will work persistently, which leads to better development of skills. If, however, a parent’s homework assistance involves plenty of concrete help, the child will work less persistently, leading to poorer development of skills.
It is important for parents to take their child’s needs into consideration when offering homework assistance. Of course, parents should offer concrete help when their child clearly needs it. However, concrete help is not something that should be made automatically available in every situation – only when needed,” Viljaranta said. www.sciencedaily.com

Helping Your Child Cope with Stress By Claire Winter Stress in primary school children has risen to worrying levels according to school leaders. 78% of school primary teachers in a recent survey reported a general increase in stress and anxiety among primary pupils.

openly discuss mental health. Katie Buckingham from the social enterprise, Altruist Enterprises (altruistuk.com) believes families should talk more about their problems. She believes the first step to combating this problem is to simply start a conversation.
ccording to the report by the website, Key, (www.thekeysupport.com), a national school support service, 27% of teachers surveyed attributed the increase in anxiety and stress to tests and 37% to social media. Thankfully MPs have finally acknowledged the adverse sideeffects of SATs and have proposed eliminating them for seven year olds by 2023. The government has also committed £300 million to improve young people’s mental health. Many educationalists argue that this is too little, far too late. With evidence of self-harm, eating disorders and stress being on the increase in schools, what should we as parents be doing to help our kids tfeel less stressed?
Here are Katie’s six tips (think APPLES) when you talk to your child: Approach casually: mention well-known celebs like Adele who openly discuss their issues Positivity: avoid negative language Patience: no one likes to be pressured Listen carefully: ask open-ended rather than leading questions Encourage your children to pursue things they love Support: seek extra help if you feel it’s needed.
Get Talking According to a poll run by Time to Change, 55% of families do not

Create a Healthy Routine Dr. Riccardo Di Cuffa, Director, and GP at Your Doctor (www.yourdoctor.co.uk) says that having a healthy routine can help combat stress, particularly when your child is making the transition to a new school or starting the new school year. Here’s what is important: Get Enough Sleep Sleep improves our memory, sharpens our attention span and helps us maintain a healthy weight. Avoiding gadgets an hour before bed and doing more relaxing activities such as reading or having a bath can make all the difference to the quality of your child’s sleep. Always Eat Breakfast Make sure your child starts the day with a nutritious and healthy meal to set them up for a full day. This will boost their energy and can also improve memory and decrease stress levels. Check-in with your Child If your child seems stressed, for instance, if they are not sleeping well, not eating well, behaving more emotionally than usual or are less interactive or more clingy, you need to get them to talk and not bottle up their feelings and worries. Set aside a time when you and they are not too tired, like on the walk to school, or after you’ve eaten your evening meal and ask them how they are really feeling.
Exercise Getting regular exercise can reduce stress. Try to walk to school with your child, visit a playground or park on the way home or get out for a walk at the weekend. Encourage your child to participate in a sporting or physical activity which will build exercise into their schedule automatically. Try Mindfulness Starting a new school, the beginning of the new school year and general worry can make all family members feel pressured. Mindfulness and meditation can help children and parents alike. There is a growing body of evidence that mindfulness can help improve concentration and self-awareness, and help us all manage and regulate difficult emotions. You can introduce your child to mindfulness via apps on your phone, like Headspace. Anxiety and stress can be self-perpetuating, your child is anxious so only focusses on the things in their life that are causing them to feel stressed. Encourage them to have a positive outlook but also allow them to voice their fears. If you help teach your child about resilience and how to cope with the tough times, as well as the good ones, you will be teaching them a great skill for life. If you are concerned about your child, please make sure you seek help from a medical professional.

Families caught up with an Explore Learning member: How long have you been going to Explore? Emily joined over 3 years ago. Why did you decide to join Explore? To help raise Emily’s low self-esteem and to provide her with confidence in her learning and within herself. How has Explore helped/ what impact has Explore had? They have provided Emily with the tools to enable her to take pride in her work, whilst learning and gaining confidence. It has taught Emily how to prioritise her work whilst completing the work within the required timescales. Who would you recommend Explore to? We would recommend Explore to any parent/guardian or child of any school age and of any ability. What advice would you give to other parents thinking about bringing their children to Explore? Can you tell me what you think makes Explore Learning a unique tutoring service? They have knowledgeable members of staff/tutors who really do care about the children and their on-going learning. Explore offers great ‘staff to children’ ratios, which enables each child to be able to ask for help where necessary. How do Explore tutors support your child in their sessions? The tutors make Emily feel welcome and are supportive, friendly, approachable and encouraging. Both good work and difficulties that Emily has overcome are praised. What does Emily enjoy about her sessions at Explore Learning? Emily has seen for herself the progress she has made at school, which can be attributed to the excellent learning at Explore. This has helped to boost Emily’s self-confidence and makes her eager to continue with her sessions. How has Explore worked with you as a family/supported you as a family? Explore has provided a safe learning environment. The regular parent’s meetings

and reports mean we can discuss progression and we can then set new goals for Emily. How has Explore supported what your child is working on at school? Since Explore, Emily’s confidence and work has improved significantly and is clearly evident from Emily’s school reports. Emily recently sat her SATS tests and her great results can be attributed to Explore, as they ensured Emily’s learning was set at the correct level and in line with the National Curriculum. Education Special
How Thinking Skills Can Equip Your Child for the Future
By Dr David Walters
W
hat jobs will be available to my child when the time comes for them to enter the employment market? It’s a worry for every parent. Artificial Intelligence will ‘kill off’ five million jobs by 2020, according to some of the more alarmist headlines. While AI threatens hundreds of thousands of jobs in the retail and administration sectors, top professions such as the law and medicine are also set to be transformed by the ‘march of the robots’. So how can we help our children to future-proof their skills? In the world of education, the speed at which the robots are advancing has poured more fuel on to the debate about the value of learning by rote. Are schools, under enormous pressure from the government to deliver ever-better exam grades, responding by priming a generation of students simply to remember, recall and regurgitate facts just as the need for those skills is being usurped by Siri and Alexa? Surely, if we want our children to succeed in a future where so many jobs will be dominated by automation, we should educate them with skills unique to human beings? So, what are those uniquely human skills, and where can your child learn them? What do we as a species have going for us that the computers don’t - and are unlikely to for at least a while? One of our most important is cognitive – or thinking – skills. Back in the 1950s a US psychologist called Benjamin Bloom devised his now-famous hierarchy of thinking. This “pyramid of thought” classifies thinking according to six cognitive levels of complexity. It is increasingly relevant
today. According to Bloom’s hierarchy, the least complex (lower order) thinking skills such as recalling information form the base of the pyramid and the most complex (higher order) skills, such as creativity, sit at the peak. Put simply, the higher up the pyramid you go, the safer you are from the rising tide of the machines. Thinking Schools, at which these higher-order skills are taught, can be found all over the world, including in Dubai, Lithuania, Norway, New Zealand, Egypt, Nigeria and Thailand. In Malaysia, the government has looked to introduce the Thinking Schools model in 10,000 public schools. In Britain, too, there is a new enthusiasm for schools where these skills form the basis of teaching. There is growing recognition that Thinking Schools drive the type of unique thinking skills and intelligent learning behaviours that we all need in an increasingly technological world. Much of education has shifted too far towards pure recall and regurgitation of fact. But thinking skills are not an education programme; they are an attitude to learning. In a Thinking School: • all members share a common language of learning • thinking strategies and tools are used across the curriculum and teachers and students have sound understanding of metacognition • all students are developing and demonstrating independent and co-operative learning skills • there are high levels of achievement and an excitement and enthusiasm for learning.
14 • Maidenhead • Windsor • Marlow • Ascot • Slough • Egham
Typically, in a Thinking School you will see pupils working with ‘map’-like visual tools which help children to understand their thinking processes and ultimately to create, understand, problem-solve and persist with tasks rather than merely regurgitate answers. Recent research has shown that attending an accredited Thinking School can improve pupils’ GCSE results by as much as a grade above what they were originally predicted. Accredited Thinking Schools have been rigorously assessed by Exeter University’s Cognitive Education Development Unit to ensure that they meet strict criteria and a list of them can be found at http://socialsciences.exeter.ac.uk/education/thi nkingschools/accreditation/accreditedschools Should your child not be at an accredited school, you can still access the Thinking Matters approach to education used by Thinking Schools. Cog-Ignition (www.cog-ignition.com) works directly with families and use ‘cognitive coaches’ who work one-to-one to develop the thinking skills, attitudes and interpersonal skills needed to succeed at school and far beyond. We don’t have to think of machines purely as a threat. They are, after all, our creation. The key is to develop the intelligences and skills to get them to work for us! Dr David Walters is Deputy Principal of a secondary school in the South West and Honorary Fellow, Exeter University Graduate School of Education. Thinking Matters works with schools all over the country which want to become Thinking Schools. For further information, visit www.thinkingmatters.com

Go Wild this Autumn! By Jo Schofield and Fiona Danks Autumn; a time for playing in crisp, colourful leaves and raiding conker trees. A time when fields are woven with glistening spiders’ webs on misty mornings and wild food is plentiful in the hedgerows and woods. Just because summer’s over, there’s no need to abandon the great outdoors. There’s a wealth of fun activities you and your children can enjoy as the temperatures start to cool. Here are just a few ideas: Make Leaf Mobiles Celebrate Autumn’s amazing colours by creating a brightly coloured mobile. You will need: twine, scissors, and a large needle. Collect colourful fallen leaves, cones, wild nuts and seeds and a stick in the woods or the park. Cut the twine into lengths of about 75cm/30in. Tie a cone or an acorn to one end of each length of twine. Thread leaves and seeds along the twine. Tie the leaf strings along a stick and hang your mobile up in the autumn sunshine. Go Wild Foraging Discover wild foods in hedgerows and woods; look out for nettles, blackberries, raspberries, elderberries, rosehips, hazelnuts, walnuts, crab apples and wild herbs. Gather some berries, nuts and leaves. Make sure you know what’s safe to eat though before you give your permission for your children to eat what they’ve collected! Hold a Wild Bake-Off Challenge What can you make from wild foods and a few basic ingredients like flour, salt, milk, butter, sugar and eggs? You will need: basic cooking equipment eg: a griddle, frying pan and Dutch oven (a cast iron cooking pot with lid), measuring cups, knives, spoons and a mixing bowl.
familiesonline.co.uk
Make a safe fire in a fire pan or pit or use a barbeque. You could bake a delicious layer pancake with different fruit in each layer, including elderberries with sloes, crab apples with rosehips, and blackberries with damsons, all cooked with a little water and sugar. Alternatively, a blackberry cake baked in a clay pot or wild herb bread cooked in a Dutch oven among the ashes. Award prizes for taste, wild presentation and the most creative use of foraged foods! Make Jam with Wild Fruit Collect some fruit on one of your walks and make some jam. Weigh and wash the wild fruit and put it in a saucepan with a little water. Bring the fruit to the boil and add the same weight of sugar. Simmer for about one hour or until it sets (does it form a jelly on a cold saucer?) Pour carefully into a warmed jar and put the lid on. Decorate a label with pictures of the fruits and invent a wild name for your jam. Cover the lid with a large leaf. Outdoor Halloween For a real Halloween adventure, go to the woods, the park or into the garden after dark for a scary feast, made more festive with wild decorations! Create: Pumpkin faces - no carving involved, just stick on wild materials with double sided tape or clay to make funny and scary faces. Leafy decorations - cut coloured leaves into bat shapes and scary faces to decorate a witch’s hat or make leaf bunting. Leafy lanterns – tie string around jars to make handles. Cut scary faces in colourful leaves and attach them to the jars with elastic bands. Pumpkin lanterns - carve pumpkins into decorated lanterns and place them in a trail for your friends to follow. Prepare a warming Halloween feast; cheesy baked potatoes and pumpkin soup, sausages

wrapped in chunks of bread, toffee apples or apple tarts, and sweet pumpkin pie. Set up a Halloween mystery trail with a few scary surprises, perhaps a ghost in the trees and a spider’s web across the path? Safety Tips • When foraging, take care to only collect safe edible fruits and seeds • Choose fruit bushes and trees away from roads • Make fires in a fire pan, a fire pit or a barbeque and always supervise children around fire and when cooking, as well as when using nightlights in lanterns and carving pumpkins
More about Going Wild Jo Schofield and Fiona Danks of Going Wild are on a mission to inspire everyone to spend more time outside discovering the wonders of the natural world. Their books are packed with practical ideas to tempt children and families away from screen-based entertainment and escape into the outdoors where the wild world will weave its magic upon them. These autumn activities are taken from their tenth book The Wild Year Book, Things to do Outdoors through the Seasons, published by Frances Lincoln in July 2018. Parenting
The Benefits of Boredom
By Gill Sims ‘I’m bored!’ How many times do we hear those words as parents? I have lost count of the number of times my precious moppets have whined over the years that they are ‘bored’ as they demanded some form of entertainment be provided (or at the very least that their electronics be returned after being confiscated yet again). But being bored is good for children; it’s part of childhood; it’s the catalyst to spark their imagination; it’s the pathway to creative play and to finding solutions to problems themselves.
B
etween work commitments and school, our time with our children is often limited and, of course, we want that time to be ‘quality time.’ However, by providing a constant carousel of activities, entertainments and days out, we are failing to teach them how to amuse themselves, to develop inner resources and be happy with their own company. It’s natural to want our children to have fun, enjoy their childhood and have happy memories to look back on, but in our quest to do that, sometimes we forget that some of their best memories will come from the things they learned, discovered, explored and sometimes struggled with themselves, not the things that were handed to them on a plate. When my children have friends over, it’s always obvious which ones are used to boredom, and which ones are accustomed to a constant programme of events. My usual response to the plaintive wail of ‘I’m bored’ is ‘Only boring people get bored’ to which my
children roll their eyes and huff at me. The children whose parents are like me and allow them to be bored, soon start inventing games, building worlds and coming up with things to do, whereas those children who are used to being given a series of suggestions and things to do, struggle with the concept of being told to just ‘go and play!’ After a little while though, when no entertainment is forthcoming, most of them do get the hang of making up games, and using their imagination, instead of being directed through a series of crafts or activities. In some cases, they even declare being handed an old blanket and told to go and make a den, to have been ‘the best fun ever!’ My conviction about the benefits of boredom partly stems from fairly lazy parenting. I’m just not one those parents who enjoy spending hours making playdough creations (in fact, although my children have outgrown playdough, the very thought of the texture still makes me shudder). So I always encouraged my children to
play independently, whether that was building Lego, mooching round the garden, or spending hours sitting in a box that was variously a castle, a racing car and an aeroplane. They did have real toys too, but for some reason empty boxes were always extremely popular - perhaps my kids are part cat? But think back to your own childhood. How much of it was spent with your parents organising you into activities, undertaking craft projects with you, or taking you on days out, and how much of it was spent complaining you were bored and being told to go and read a book, or find something to do? Mine certainly involved a great deal of boredom, that in turn led to imaginary worlds and people and that perhaps then led me to become a writer. Without a healthy dose of boredom, there is no incentive to learn to think for ourselves, or to change things to alleviate boredom! Of course, I’m not suggesting that children don’t deserve some fun, special treats and parental input. Just that sometimes, it doesn’t hurt them to be bored. There are enough things we are made to feel guilty about as parents and our children occasionally being bored should definitely not be one of them! If your child complains frequently of boredom, fill a jar with paper slips with tedious tasks written on them, like ‘tidy your room,’ ‘do the dusting,’ ‘weed a flowerbed,’ ‘sort out your sock drawer.” Any time someone complains of boredom, they have to pick a slip out randomly and complete the chore on it. When faced with this, it was astonishing how quickly my children found themselves something more interesting to do! So, embrace boredom! Your cherubs will thank you for it one day. And even if they don’t appreciate what you are so selflessly doing for them now, you might get a tidy house with impeccably ordered sock drawers out of it! Gill Sims is the bestselling author of Why Mummy Drinks, which spent a staggering 30 weeks in the Sunday Times Top 10 and was the bestselling debut hardback novel of 2017. Her second novel Why Mummy Swears was published in Hardback by HarperCollins in July 2018 RRP £12.99.

You don’t have to be a foodie to have noticed that foraging has become a ‘thing’ lately. Many restaurants and gastropubs now employ their own forager, an expert who knows where all the wild goodies grow, who has a specific brief to select the best wild ingredients leaves, blossoms, roots, shoots (and not forgetting fungi and coastal plants) to grace the plates of lucky diners. Food like this, although wild and free, does not come cheap. You’re paying for the expertise of the forager, his or her knowledge of the land and its edible treasures, as well as hours of attention to making sure that each tiny leaf or flower is perfect.
Foraging with Kids... It’s Not Just about the Plants! By Adele Nozedar
B
elieve me, I have nothing but admiration for the chefs and restaurants who employ foragers but foraging is not new. Human beings and the plant world have had a relationship for thousands of years. Are you wearing cotton? It’s a plant. Do you ever take aspirin? Made from a plant. Do you like marshmallow? It was once a plant! The truth is that human beings always have been foragers and always will be. I feel sorry for today’s children, since, like it or not, they are born into a world of screens. Children tend not to play outside in all weathers and at all hours as they used to. Kids still play together, but the nature of that play sadly errs towards the sedentary. This is where foraging comes in. It’s an activity for all ages that by definition can only take place outside. In noticing the common wild plants which surround us in our search for those that are edible, we connect easily and effortlessly with the real world, away from the lure of
screens for a few precious hours. Over the past few years, I have taken out thousands of people on foraging expeditions but my favourite groups are ones with children. These are the walks that teach me the most. On one such walk a boy of about 5 insisted on leading the way. I said that was fine so long as he gave us a name for every plant he wanted to point out. After meandering down a path a little way, we came to a nettle. The boy couldn’t quite remember the name but improvised beautifully, ‘Ladies and gentleman, this is a needle plant!’ he cried. And he was right; ‘nettle’ and ‘needle’ are closely related, and indeed, to ‘nettle’ also means to annoy – very appropriate! Being able to single out an edible and tasty plant from what initially seems to be a sea of greenery is particularly empowering for kids, who love to show you their finds. Think dandelions, wild garlic, elderberries, cleavers, sorrel, hairy bittercress. Keep it simple. Start in your garden or local park to see
what you can find. Once you start to look, it’s hard to stop. But how to start foraging? Kids love equipment, and whilst you don’t need much, there are a few “props” that will help. Here they are, in no particular order: • Something in which to put your treasures - a basket, a cloth bag or even a tub will be fine. Avoid plastic since it makes plants ‘sweat.’ • Decent footwear • Wet weather protection, just in case • A magnifying glass, to look closely at your finds (it’s amazing how something as small as a daisy will look like another world when examined closely!) I prefer a small jeweller’s loup, which costs approximately £2. • A good foraging book (guess which one!) Start as close to home as possible. If you’ve a garden, great. If not, head for the nearest park or green area. Rather than searching for something specific, look around to see if there’s anything you
recognise. Remember that the plants you’re looking for can be so common that you don’t even notice them. Above all, let the kids take the lead. If they want to run around and stop foraging for a while, that’s absolutely fine and all part of the plan! You might find that little and often is the way – forage on the walk to school, maybe. Above all, this experience is meant to be something that you and your kids are going to love for the rest of your lives so introduce it at a pace that suits you all. Top Five Plants You’re Most Likely to Find All Year Round • Greater Plantain • Nettles • Dandelions (flowers in spring/summer, leaves all year round) • Chickweed • Hairy bitter cress

She Means Business... Local mum Jen Wilson used her experience working in nurseries and as a nanny to set up her own business supplying childcare staff. Families talks to Jen about how she started out operating KiddyKare from her parents’ house and has grown it into a successful business covering Berkshire and the South East.
Who are you and where do you live? My name is Jen Wilson. I live in the Maidenhead area with my husband and two fun and energetic boys. I enjoy spending time with my family and friends, eating out and walking my chocolate Labrador, life is busy!!
Tell us a bit about the business? I set up KiddyKare over 10 years ago from my parents’ house supplying childcare staff to nurseries on a temporary and permanent basis. The business quickly evolved covering Berkshire and the surrounding area and so we moved to an office in Maidenhead town centre, employing a proactive office team. Ten years on the business and office team has grown, covering the South East and leading groups over the UK. We support families withn the Berkshire area with their search for a Nanny and have built up a great reputation within the area. We continue to supply childcare staff to single nurseries and nurseries within leading groups, After School Clubs, Holiday Clubs and Nannies to private families. KiddyKare has been set up following Safer Recruitment
guidelines and we are registered with the REC (Recruitment and Employment Confederation) due to working within the childcare and recruitment sector I realised how important this is. What did you use to do? Did you change career to do this? I trained as an NNEB Nursery Nurse and worked for over 15 years as a Nanny, Creche Manager, child carer within Nurseries and most recently as a Nursery Manager within a leading Nursery in Maidenhead. I enjoyed working in a variety of roles from family homes, day nurseries and within a Golf and Health and fitness club as a Creche Manager. What inspired you to set up the business? After over 15 years working within childcare I realised I had the relevant skills to work within the recruitment industry. I accepted a position with a national childcare agency and gained extensive recruitment experience, both in supporting staff to find suitable

positions and providing Nurseries with solutions to their staffing requirements. Then in 2007 KiddyKare was established and has grown from strength to strength…. What are your plans for the future? I’d like to continue to provide a great service to our current customers and families to grow the business to a larger geographical area. The KiddyKare team are a committed and dedicated team, they have all worked within childcare in management or recruitment themselves so I have lots of ideas thrown my way! What would your advice be to other business women? Follow your dream and be open to the challenges you could face. If you see an opportunity don’t be fazed, it is so rewarding. For more information contact KiddyKare on 01628 675 828 email jen@kiddykare.co.uk or visit www.kiddykare.co.uk

...She Means Business Once children come along, many of us look for a new direction or career change that enables us to have more flexible working hours and allows us to spend precious time with our family. Having worked as a performer in the West End, local mum Mairi talks to Families about how she decided to combine her passion and experience in music and theatre, to create fun and engaging classes for children. it is more a career development than a complete change. I also still perform, with Showstopper Family Cabaret, and the comedy duo, Going South. I have definitely not closed the door to big shows either.
Who are you and where do you live? My name is Mairi Bryan (stage name Cowieson) and I live in Maidenhead with my family. Tell us a bit about the business? Showstopper Babies is the original Musical Theatre music and sensory classes for babies. Especially created for new-born through until walking and currently successfully running in Maidenhead and Windsor, the classes provide a friendly vibrant atmosphere where babies giggle, learn and develop while parents also have lots of fun. Original brand new and exciting songs mixed with well-known Musical Theatre Broadway hits, makes for a very different class with much to love.
I also run Showstopper Parties which offers singing, dance and drama parties for children of all ages. What did you use to do? Did you change career to do this? I was performing in ‘Let The Right One In’, a chilling play at the Apollo Theatre, Shaftesbury Avenue when I became pregnant with my first child. Before this I performed in many big West End Musicals including Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, South Pacific and Starlight Express. I have always taught alongside my performing career, from Head of Musical Theatre at Newcastle College to choreographing for the company West End In Schools and was running my successful Parties business. So I guess in some ways
What inspired you to set up the business? I believe in bringing musical theatre to everyone. I started these classes after having my first child and my Birthmatters antinatal group inspired me. They knew I was a performer and ran Showstopper Parties and wanted me to sing with them and their babies. I really believe in the benefits of music, dance and drama, so it made sense to take my passion and apply it to a babies’ class. I know how beneficial structured music classes are; for the babies’ development, growth and enjoyment, for bonding between parent and baby, allowing mummies to get out of the house and meet new people. Also studies prove such structured classes can help to prevent and overcome postnatal depression*. I was passionate to create a class that was a bit different, that parents could enjoy as much as the babies. Plus I love performing! What are your plans for the future? I would like to start classes in more areas with people working alongside me, allowing performing mummies like me to have another job they can do. Performing is hard once you have had a baby and going back to the antisocial hours and such long hours isn’t easy. I
would like to expand so I can offer them a way to still perform and engage and make a difference, bringing these unique, fun and engaging musical theatre classes to more new parents. Showstopper Tots, a musical theatre class for toddler and pre-school age will be starting soon. These classes are designed to help with confidence, coordination, musicality, language and focus by engaging the tots using creative movement, original songs and a wonderful hand-made puppet theatre, to captivate the minds of the little ones and take them on a wonderful musical and theatrical experience each week. What would your advice be to other business women? Go out there and do it. Decide before you start what you want to achieve, see your goal and aim for that, even if you take a while to get there, know where you are headed. Be careful with your ideas and protect yourself where possible. And good luck!
