The Roman Baths has been given the Royal Mail seal of approval as the Bath & North East Somerset Council-run heritage attraction features in a new collection of postage stamps. Bath is the only World Heritage Site to be featured in the second part of the Royal Mail’s A-Z of Great Britain stamp set; with a breathtaking image of early morning mist rising from the Roman Baths – the only Roman monument to be immortalised in the commemorative collection. Stephen Clews, Manager of the Roman Baths, said: “The image on this beautiful stamp captures Bath & North East Somerset Council’s Roman Baths as you can see it on a crisp winter's morning, with dawn light breaking. In the early morning the baths can be a calm and quiet space with mist rising slowly from the waters, allowing the viewer to immerse in tranquil solitude. Photographer Mark Passmore has done an excellent job in revealing this very special moment in the daily life of the baths.” The City of Bath was inscribed as a World Heritage Site 25 years ago in 1987. The entire city is covered by the status – one of only a handful of cities with the designation. Royal Mail’s dramatic 26-stamp, alphabetical odyssey around the UK celebrates iconic landmarks across all four countries, ranging from ancient through to modern, and from the significant to the spectacular. Local News Front cover by Oscar and Rose Photography Emma of Oscar and Rose Photography has provided images to Families upon Avon for over a year and it was a pleasure to meet with Emma at her studio for the ‘Vintage Jubilee Tea Party’ photo shoot for this issue.
Oscar and Rose Photography
Emma’s studio is an 1882 vintage second class carriage with a fascinating history. The carriage has been renovated to provide an indoor setting which is perfectly in tune with Emma’s unique style of photography. The carriage contains a variety of props used in sessions, which transport you back in time from quaint cups and saucers to bell-shaped bird cages. The photo shoot for the May/June issue was set up on location, a working farm near Lacock and an idyllic countryside setting for outdoor photography. The session was natural and relaxed and the photo genuinely captures a child enjoying a tea party. Emma is a true professional who has the ability to create more than just a photograph with her artistic flair. Oscar and Rose will be at So Natural Baby Festival at Green Park Station, Bath on Sunday 6th May, 10:30am – 4:30pm. A variety of photo sessions can be booked with Oscar and Rose including newborn, children, family, lifestyle, wedding and pets. How just one short story a month can give your child a crucial headstart when starting school.. The letters are all out, and by now every parent in B&NES will know which Infant School their child will be attending in September. This is usually the time when the realities of sending your small son or daughter off to school for the very first time really hits home – and experts say that it’s never too early to prepare your child for this enormous and exciting milestone. With this is in mind, last year My Small World Toy Store launched a superb monthly book club designed exclusively for 3 and 4 year olds who are heading to school in September, and now it’s back, ready to help the newest intake of reception class pupils. My Small Book Club for Nearly Schoolers features 6 of the absolute best ‘starting school’ books ever published. Children visit the store each month for story-time with especially chosen books which focus on the big leap from home or playgroup to school. The children will have the chance to talk about the books, their feelings about starting school and to join in with some fantastic school related activities (like making a classroom out of cardboard and populating it with new school friends and teachers!) ‘We know that starting school is a big and exciting leap for families, but it also causes anxiety in both parents and children, and it’s never too early to start preparing the whole family.’ says My Small World Owner Dawn Burden, ‘Books are a fantastic way of helping children to talk about things with their parents and their peers – and we love mixing it up with some great creative activities!’ And if you are unable to get down to the store for these funky sessions, you can still order the books from The My Small World Website and download activity sheets to do at home, just like parents all across the Uk when the book club launches nationally later this month. My Small Book Club for Nearly Schoolers runs on the first Thursday of every month from now until children start school in September. Just call the store to book a place. Where: My Small World Toy Store, Little Southgate, Southgate, Bath (Between Debenhams and Boots) When: The first Thursday of every month. 10am til 11am For further information and booking call 01225 938338

New classes at Widbrook Grange Hotel in Bradford on Avon
We are both keen swimmers and swam throughout our pregnancies, then prompted by our love of the water and in Nik's case her partners nervousness of the water, both took our daughters to Turtle tots from a few weeks old and were amazed at how quickly they progressed and enjoyed it so much that we decided to retrain.. we met whilst training and have now gone into partnership together and haven't looked back! We believe that swimming is a great family activity but also an essential safety skill that all children should learn as early as possible. Turtle tots is a fun and innovative swimming programme that begins during pregnancy with our Turtle tums, aqua yoga classes and continues until school age. The majority of babies start classes at about 6 - 10 weeks old, but we recommend babies start in the pool sooner rather than later.. our youngest ever was a 2 day old! Not only does our programme focus on teaching babies and young children to swim, it also promotes pre-natal and post-natal fitness and provides you with an excellent toning work out, endorsed by personal trainers. Our classes are fun and sociable for everyone but more importantly the children learn essential life saving skills whilst developing emotionally and physically. The classes provide a really special bonding experience. Our classes form a progressive programme so we teach something new each week and build on learnt skills in every class. We ensure that every baby or toddler is taught at a pace that suits them. At Turtle tots we believe in supporting local causes and are proud to be supporting the Cots for Tots Appeal, which supports special care babies at St Michaels Hospital in Bristol. A percentage of every class booked will be given to this worthwhile appeal.

Lighting the way to London 2012
From an original article by Allison Thomas
From an original article by Rebecca Carr On 18 May 2012, the Olympic Torch Relay will start with a 70-day celebration that will travel thousands of miles to bring the London 2012 Games to hundreds of communities across the UK. he Olympic Flame will be lit on 10 May in Olympia, Greece and will embark on a 8 day relay around Greece before arriving at the Panathenaic Stadium in Athens for the official Olympic Flame handover ceremony. Lighting the cauldron in the Olympic Stadium signifies the beginning of the games and the flame will stay lit until the closing ceremony on 12 August. The Olympic Flame is one of the most recognized symbols of any Olympic Games. A ritual for the lighting of the Flame is followed at every Games. It is lit from the sun’s rays at the Temple of Hera in Olympia, in a traditional ceremony among the ruins of the home of the Ancient Games. The flame is then handed over to the new host city and the Flame is then transferred from one torchbearer to another, spreading the message of peace, unity and friendship.
T
It’s not just sporting superstars who’ll carry the Olympic Flame this summer. People from all walks of life and from every part of the UK will take part. In all, 8,000 torchbearers will get the chance of a lifetime to carry the flame and over half of the torchbearers will be young people aged 12 - 25. For the first time in Olympic history, Britain will be the first country to hold a torch relay completely within the UK. The Olympic Torch Relay will be a fantastic spectacular, a chance to celebrate your community and showcase it to the world – so don’t miss out! On Day 4 (22 May) the flame will leave Taunton and journey through several cities and towns in Somerset before reaching Trowbridge, Bradford on Avon and Bath before heading towards Bristol for the night. Check your local authority website for times and street level details.
Different or Deficient? By Joanna McNiff here are now 56% more children diagnosed with autism than there were five years ago. It is highly likely that there is a child in every class somewhere on the autistic spectrum. For many of us, the 'Rainman' stereotype is our only reference point. It was a great film and a fascinating insight into a complex and challenging disorder but it has coloured our perception of autism for two decades and much has changed. As with most disabilities, our understanding is limited by our personal experience.

Autism??? We often associate autism with poor social skills and difficulties with communication but there is so much more to discover. There is no prescription for an autistic cure but I have witnessed the benefits of early intervention. often difficult for the parents of a newly diagnosed child to carve a pathway through the forest of internet advice and chat forums to formulate a strategy to enable them to 'connect' with their child and build the skills which will allow them to achieve their potential. Autistic children often require early intensive support with communication, sensory difficulties, challenging behaviour and social skills. Young children tend to respond positively to these programmes and begin to use facial expression and eye contact to communicate. This helps to reduce anxiety and frustration and can have a positive impact on their behaviour. Autistic children can move along the spectrum of disorder and can challenge our expectations. Those diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome have high functioning autism and can be bright, intelligent and capable but lacking in some of the basic social mores that we take for granted. Indeed there are many 'quirky greats' associated with Asperger's Syndrome. For those of us who live with autism, the only predictable thing about it is the unpredictability. There

• The ancient Olympic Games was a series of competitions held between representatives of several city states and kingdoms from Ancient Greece. They were part of a religious festival held in honour of Zeus. • According to legend, it was Heracles who first called the Games ‘Olympic’ and established the custom of holding them every four years. • The Ancient Games featured running events, a pentathlon (running, wrestling, javelin, discus and long jump), boxing, wrestling and chariot racing. Winners were crowned with wreaths from a sacred olive tree that grew behind the temple of Zeus. • The Games were at their most popular in Greece until 6BC and then began to wane in popularity as the Romans became more powerful in the area. • The first Modern Olympic Games were held in Athens in 1896 and featured athletics, cycling, fencing, gymnastics, shooting, swimming, tennis, weight lifting and wrestling. From 241 participants representing 14 nations in 1896, the Games have grown to about 10,500 competitors from 204 countries at the 2008 Summer Olympics. • The 1900 Olympics held in Paris held some of the strangest Olympic events to date – including hot air ballooning, live pigeon shooting, poodle clipping and delivery van driving. • In 2012, London will become the first city to host the Olympics on three occasions. • Great Britain was one of 14 teams to compete the 1896 Summer Olympics and has since competed at every Games. • In Beijing 2008, Great Britain came 4th in the medal table with 47 medals – 19 golds, 13 silvers and 15 bronze medals. China came top with 100 medals.
is little argument that it is a baffling condition – the child with autism may look 'normal' but his behaviour can be perplexing and downright difficult. Yet, individuals with autism are showing us that they can overcome and compensate for many of autism's most challenging characteristics. Equipping parents, teachers and those around our children with a simple understanding of autism's most basic elements has a tremendous impact on their ability to journey towards productive and independent adulthood.

The City of Bath Rhythmic Gymnastics Club is one of the very TOP CLUBS, in Great Britain! The club has been running for nearly 12 years and is led by High performance coach and Brevet Judge, Sarah Moon. An enthusiastic team of coaches and volunteers (in numerous capacities) all help to contribute to the success of the club. Rhythmic Gymnastics is a sport combining elegance, coordination, agility and artistry. The gymnasts use five different types of apparatus: rope, ball, hoop, clubs or ribbon and perform routines to music as an individual or as part of a group. The younger gymnasts also do a ‘Free routine’ without apparatus. The club has its own badge scheme starting at Badge 10 (entry level) working up to badge 1 (novice and development squads). At performance level the gymnasts train between 8-24 hours a week depending on age and competition level, which ranges from grades to British and International Competition. We always do very well in competition, right through the competitive system from primary levels, through to international tournaments. We support the girls through all levels of competition and encourage the fun of taking part in our displays at Christmas and in the summer, especially for younger or newer members of the club who may not want to take part in competitions. Supporting the girls and encouraging them to progress through enjoyment is the key. For further information please visit our website www.bathrhythmic.com

arah started Rhythmic Gymnastics at the young age of five and her drive and passion for the sport has never waned. After university Sarah worked for the Somerset Activity and Sports Partnership and also coached rhythmic gymnastics in her spare time. Working with young children and helping them develop, change and grow in confidence through gymnastics has been a rewarding aspect of her career. Sarah’s dedication and motivation aspires both coaches and gymnasts from beginners to the Elite. Her achievements were acknowledged in 2007 when she won Community Sports Coach of the Year for Sports Coach UK. The event was held at the Dorchester Hotel, London where she was presented with her award by The Princess Royal (Princess Anne). Another high achievement for Sarah was in 2010, when she was made the official England Rhythmic Gymnastics team coach for the Commonwealth Games held in Delhi, where the England team Rachel Ennis (Hendon Gymnastics Club, London), Francesca Fox and Lynne Hutchison (City of Bath Rhythmic Gymnastics Club) secured a bronze medal. Sarah, who in her own words “lives, eats, drinks and breathes rhythmic gymnastics” first saw the Olympics held in Seoul, South Korea in 1988 on television at eight years old. This made a great impact on Sarah who can remember watching the athletics and thinking this looks great – I want to go there and do that! Now after 24 years Sarah has achieved her Olympic dream.

Cycling with kids Originated from an article by Karen Wood
ne of the best ways to enjoy cycling is in a group, and there’s no better group than your own family! Children as young as 2 years old are now able to cycle using balance bikes, so there really is no excuse for the whole family not to join in. We are all aware of the problems of obesity and with a shocking 10% of children in the UK now clinically obese (British Medical Association), cycling is a great way to spend quality family time together, get fitter and – after the initial equipment has been bought – it’s a cheap, fun activity. Choosing equipment Bikes need to complement your lifestyle so, before you buy, think about where you want to use them. Depending on the ages of your children and your levels of fitness, you may need racers or mountain bikes for sporty action, hybrids for a mixture of road and trail riding, plus smaller models and balance bikes for the children. Whilst you tend to get what you pay for, the most important part is the right size frame. If you also intend to use your bike to commute, find out if your employer runs a cycle-towork scheme – you could save up to 40%. Once the bikes are chosen, remember to take a spare inner tube and a puncture kit to keep them moving, plus a good quality helmet and a drink. It’s also worth investing in a bike lock so you can pop in for tea and cake en route!
O
Stay safe According to a recent Sustrans survey, more than half of us believe the roads are too unsafe to cycle on, but The National Cycle Network provides safe and attractive routes perfect for family bike rides. Local Cycle Paths The Bristol to Bath Railway Path is a popular 13 mile route and the first major project undertaken by Sustrans, it is open to walkers and cyclists with access provided for disabled users. The path also features a variety of sculptures (including a drinking giant!) and working steam engines at the old train station at Bitton (Avon Valley Railway). There are ideal stopping points for drinks or snacks or perhaps you could enjoy a pub lunch in Saltford. In Bath, you'll find a variety of ways to spend the rest of your day including the Roman Baths, art galleries, shopping. For full details of access points, facilities and heritage, visit the official website at www.bristolbathrailwaypath.org.uk Kennet & Avon Cycle Route an 85 mile route from Bath to Reading is another popular route, which combines towpath cycling with diversions via country lanes where the path is less suitable. If you don’t have a bike you can hire one from the Bath & Dundas Canal Co. for details visit www.bathcanal.com. For further details on local routes please visit www.waterscape.com/canals-andrivers/kennet-and-avon-canal/cycling.

Before the Ride... Do your homework: Make certain you are familiar with the bike route. If you get lost or the route is longer than expected, your child may suffer not only from a diminished experience, but potentially in more serious ways such as dehydration or exposure – older children will enjoy the planning too and might even learn some geography if you look at a map together. Start early: Children tend to tire quickly in the afternoon. Take advantage of their energy in the morning and start your ride early. Invite playmates: Cycling is more fun when shared. If your child has a friend who is at the same level of competency on a bike, bring him or her along. Slow down: Realize that a 4-mile ride may take 2 hours. Don't expect to ride as fast as you would on your own. Be aware of traffic: What might seem like light traffic to you could be a more dangerous situation for your child, whether biking separately or in a trailer. Be prepared: Carry a tool kit and know
8
• • • • •
how to use it. Also, carry a first-aid kit that includes a few bandages and antibiotic cream to handle minor cases of road rash. Dress right: Bring a daypack to hold extra jackets in case the weather changes. Also, try to wear bright clothing or reflective sashes, to aid your visibility.
On the Ride... Take breaks: Plan on taking a lot of short breaks. Allow time to stop, get off the bike and explore. Drink water: Always have water readily available. Try to drink before feeling thirsty to stay hydrated. Eat snacks: A well-timed snack can defuse a squabble or bad mood and keep energy going. Kids tend to misbehave more when they're tired, hungry or thirsty. Make it fun: Choose an interesting route that goes by gardens, streams, views, farms or a favourite shop. Most children are interested in what they can see along the route rather than what's at the end of the road or trail. Express enthusiasm: If you convey a genuinely upbeat attitude, children most often will be inclined to mimic it.

Birthday Traditions – 12 ways to create magical moments Inexpensive and clever ways to make the most of a child’s birthday by creating some fun traditions to make a child’s birthday a special day to remember By Elisabeth Dolton
hink of your child’s birthday and what’s the first thing that comes to mind? Already? What are we going to do this year? Whatever you think, instead of racking your brains thinking for the latest party ideas, what about actually doing some things the same as you did last year? Build simple birthday traditions that you all know about, look forward to, and that create memories that last a lifetime. This is the stuff of magic moments! We have collected 12 fabulous traditions that can make your children’s birthdays special every year.

1. Big-Day Countdown Make the approach to their birthday important. Hang a garland of seven envelopes, each with a small daily goodie, leading up to the grand finale. 2. Decorate and Titivate The night before your child’s birthday sneak into their room and decorate it with a special sign wishing them a Happy Birthday. Blow up balloons and put birthday wishes all over the house. 3. Bake a cake Make a birthday cake instead of buying one. Your child will appreciate even a simple cake made from a mix. Get your child to pick out what they want their birthday cake to look like, a rocket, princess castle, favourite animal, etc. 4. Have a special meal Have breakfast in bed awakened by the whole family singing happy birthday. Create a beautiful tea party to enjoy the finger sandwiches and tea. Let the birthday child pick the dinner menu however crazy their wishes. 5. Have a ‘birthday’ plate Have a special plate that each child uses for meals on their birthday. The same could be done for a birthday eggcup, a special seat at the table, or hat they have to wear all day. 6. Opening presents Hide presents around the house and provide clues to help your child find them. Follow a ribbon to their first gift, or unroll string all around the house that take them to their presents. 7. Celebrate them growing up Create a photo banner of your child’s annual photographs. Take a family photo on the same
Families upon Avon May/June 2012
settee every year put them in a scrapbook that you add to every year. Ask them their favourite colour, ice-cream, hobby, etc., note them down and do this on every birthday. 8. Capture the moment Get out the camcorder and interview your child about the special things they have done that year, include props like their award-winning science project that year, their sports trophies, the self-portrait they did of themselves, etc. 9. Special family events Do the same walk every year, have dinner at the same place, go sledging, have a picnic on the beach. Do activities that are typical of what you are like as a family, e.g. if you are a musical family, hold a concert, if you are outdoorsy plan a boat trip. 10. Annual additions Plant a tree or flowers that bloom annually around your child's birthday. Ask grandparents to add to a charm bracelet or commemorative coin collection each year. 11. Tell a Tale Let the birthday child stay up a little later after the other children have gone to bed and tell them about the day they were born, and how you felt when they arrived. 12. Remind them of how special they are A simple way is give each member of the family a birthday candle, then pass around a small dessert. Each person puts in their candle and tells the birthday girl/boy something they love about them. They pass the dessert to the next person, who does the same until everyone has added their candle, light the candles and sing Happy Birthday.
Party tips from KIDZFUN
can be a daunting prospect for most parents to entertain that many children. If this is the case then call in KIDZFUN. Prices for a two hour interactive party range from £90.00 to £150.00 depending upon requirements. Popular party themes include pirates, princesses and knights, fairies, outer space, under the sea, super heroes and circus. However if you are going to run your own party check out this list of do's and don'ts from Kidzfun Sally
DO • Welcome each child into the party space and give them a name tag. • Arrange a simple and fun activity/game to do as everyone is arriving. • Have a table/place to put presents and coats. • Have someone to help with any child's individual needs • Use an outdoor space for at least some of the party if you can. • Be flexible and always have a game up your sleeve. • Go with what the children are enthusiastic about.
✂
KIDZFUN is a children's entertainment business located in Bath and run by Sally Handley (aka KIDZFUN Sally). Many local families may know her pre-school music and movement sessions in Widcombe and Larkhall and after school circus clubs in Oldfield park and Batheaston. Kidzfun specialise in interactive parties with live piano/keyboard accompaniment. ”At a Kidzfun party its full participation for the children, I don't expect them to sit still for more than one and a half minutes!“ says Sally “We can do any theme for a party and over the years we have built up a tried and tested formula for children's parties that has had a 100% success rate! Lots of people invite the whole class to their child’s party especially in the infant age range, so it
DON'T • Open the presents at the party, its sensory overload! • Give them food first or have it out on the tables before time (disaster!) • Play games with a long waiting time. • Play too many winner/loser games. • Use a sound system that’s not up to the job! • Have loose balloons lying around, it invites wild games and big bangs!
Jubilee Face Painting step by step Get in the spirit of things by painting your children’s faces. Just grab some red, white and blue face paints and follow the steps below (we used Snazaroo Union Jack Face Painting Kit, £4.99, www.snazaroo.com). 1. Using a damp sponge and white face paint, sketch out the white areas – no need to be exactly accurate as you can paint the other colours over it once it’s dry. 2. Then, using the royal blue paint and the brush, fill in the eight triangular shapes that remain. 3. To finish, with bright red paint and a brush, fill in the central cross and then add the fine diagonal lines. Or if you prefer a more understated look, here’s how to create the perfect Union Jack cheek art 1. Using a brush and white paint, sketch out the shape of the flag, the central cross and the diagonals with a fine line. Then fill in the diagonal lines. 2. With bright red paint and a brush, fill in the central cross and then add the fine diagonal lines. 3. To finish, using royal blue paint and the brush, fill in the eight triangular shapes that remain.
