Originally from California and Scotland, Nick and Sheila Nicholas met in London and married in the early 1980s. In 2001, they brought their family to Oregon’s Chehalem Mountains, settling in the overgrown walnut and plum orchard which was to become the home of Nicholas Estate Vineyard. Intending from the start to make estate wines that truly reflect their origin, they carefully selected Pommard and four Pinot Noir clones on differing rootstocks to compensate for soil depth and offer the best blending options in the finished wines. Then they added one acre each of Riesling and Gewürztraminer on the steepest slopes. A further 6 acres divided between Riesling, Chardonnay and Wädenswil Pinot Noir were planted in 2008 according to the biodynamic calendar. They named their wines Anam Cara Cellars after the Celtic words meaning friend of my soul. The vineyard they planted is pictured on the label, framed by connecting vines to symbolize the relationship between the vineyard, the wines it gives us, and friends who enjoy them together. From the beginning, each Anam Cara Cellars wine has been made entirely from estate grown fruit and is a true reflection of the vineyard, vintage and terroir. Certified L.I.V.E., farming at Nicholas Estate also incorporates organic and biodynamic practices out of respect for the land. In just a few short years, the vineyard has already demonstrated its potential with highly-rated Pinot Noirs, and whites with exceptional accolades.

Since its inception in 1993, Archery Summit has been devoted to crafting exceptional Pinot Noir. Inspired by the remarkable growing conditions provided by the Willamette Valley, Archery Summit approaches each step of the wine making process with particular thoughtfulness and care, so as to yield one of the finest and most luxurious Pinot Noirs available. The foundation of Archery Summit’s vision was the location: Oregon’s Willamette Valley AVA. Pinot Noir is an early-maturing variety that requires the perfect combination of cool climate and sunshine in order to achieve balanced ripening. The Willamette Valley is one of the unique growing regions that possess the ideal growing conditions required to achieve optimal Pinot Noir character. There is no division of winecrafting labor at Archery Summit. The pairing of Anna Matzinger, winemaker, and Leigh Bartholomew’s, wine grower, talents and experience seamlessly melds “the land” and “the hand” to craft Archery Summit’s wines. Leigh contributes her intimate knowledge of the intricacies of each vineyard, and Anna adds her rich understanding of the transformation of fruit into wine. This rich history of Archery Summit wines has driven an international reputation as among the finest of New World Pinot Noir wines.

Sams Valley Vineyard in Southern Oregon is home to Cliff Creek Cellars, owned and operated by three generations of the Garvin family. For 100 years, our family has been devoted to Oregon agriculture. Today, we nurture the estate vineyards with the same meticulous care as our ancestors. Sams Valley Vineyard lies in the Rogue Valley appellation of Southern Oregon. We planted our first vines in 1999 an now have approximately 70 acres in vineyard. Our site is oriented to a southwestern exposure at 1400 ft. elevation. The vineyard is known for its unique terroir of Medford loam with a strain of volcanic ash. The soil composite, in addition to a high heat index and lack of rain, allows us to create complex fruit with intense flavors and exceptional balance. We have taken extra care in choosing our varietals to match our sight. We feel that the long growing season allows us to produce the highest quality fruit of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet, Franc, Merlot, Syrah and Sangiovese.

Coelho wines reflect our Portuguese heritage and spirit. We farm using sustainable viticulture methods, preserving the environment and the character of our wines. In addition to our LIVE Certified, sustainably-grown Estate Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir rosé, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay, we produce an Iberian varietal red wine blend, Petite Sirah, and Port-style dessert wines. Each wine is designated by a Portuguese name, which reflects the varietal and the story of the harvest. What started out as a dream later became reality for the Coelho family. Each member has contributed to the development and growth of their family business. In the 1980’s, prior to the start of Coelho Winery, Dave and Deolinda Coelho farmed approximately 800 acres of tomatoes, sugar beets, corn and alfalfa in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Coelho Winery was established in 2004 by husband and wife, Dave and Deolinda Coelho, both second generation Portuguese Americans. Dave and Deolinda’s two sons play pivotal roles in their family business. David graduated from Willamette University in Salem, Oregon, earning a double degree in German and Economics. During his time at Willamette University, he spent a year abroad at the University of Dortmund in Germany, expanding his knowledge internationally. After finishing his undergraduate in 2008 he later found himself back in Germany where he completed his master’s in December 2009. David earned his master’s in European Integration Studies and joined the winery full-time in the summer of 2010. He now leads the winemaking program and actively participates in the estate vineyard. Samuel graduated from Oregon State University. He earned his degree in Business Administration Management with a dual focus in International Business and Spanish. He has been actively involved in the family business, including harvest, crush, and operations. He now heads up the marketing and sales department. Samuel has had the opportunity to travel and live abroad to further his Business and Spanish speaking skills. Spending time in Argentina, Uruguay, Mexico and other Latin American countries.

Cristom’s founder and owner, Paul Gerrie, used his skills as an engineer and avid researcher to pursue his passion for wine. On his travels to France, he was introduced to the traditional growing practices of the Burgundy region. He learned that soil and site were key in developing the complexity of the fruit. After a 1991 visit to the International Pinot Noir Celebration in Oregon, Paul decided the time was right to leave the East Coast and bring his family and his passion for great Pinot Noir to Oregon’s burgeoning wine country. But their journey wasn’t complete without a winemaker who shared Paul’s vision of “letting the land make the wines.” Enter Steve Doerner (pictured above) who, after 30 years of experience, still believes the winemaker’s job is to “optimize what nature—the vineyard— provides.” In addition to his reputation as a master winemaker with “keen intuition”, Steve is a biochemist who had been making Pinot Noir in California for 14 years. And so, with a passion that only wine enthusiasts embrace and a precision that can only come from a chemist and an engineer, the two set out to cultivate their vision, which today, can be seen in the benchmark Pinot Noirs that are crafted from Cristom’s 75 acres.

First established in 2005 with The Occidental Vineyard on the far Sonoma Coast of California, Evening Land Vineyards now organically farms over 120 acres of heritage vineyards that produce 13 estate wines. From the volcanic soils of the storied Seven Springs Vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills of Oregon, to the fog wrapped ridges of the Sonoma Coast, to the windswept mountains of fossilized sea shells at The Tempest Vineyard in the Santa Rita Hills, Evening Land wines explore the sensitivity of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay in these diverse backdrops. Recently, Evening Land expanded this varied picture of Pinot Noir and Chardonnay with maison-crafted Burgundian wines through ELV Cote d’Or, a winery established in Burgundy. Winemaking at The Seven Springs Vineyard is in the hands of Burgundy trained Isabelle Meunier. Dominique Lafon of Les Comtes de Lafon in Meursault serves as consulting winemaker. All of Evening Land’s California wines are made by Sashi Moorman. Christophe Vial, in consultation with Dominique Lafon, serves as the winemaker for ELV Cote d’Or. The name “Evening Land Vineyards” was inspired by a Greek myth in which the golden fruits that grew in the gardens of The Evening Land became the source that kept the Gods immortal. According to this myth, The Evening Land exists under the constantly setting sun on the western rim of the known world, just beyond the reach of mortals.

The seed for a career in wine was planted squarely in Bourbon country of Lexington, Kentucky. While waiting tables to put himself through school, Ken was exposed to fine wines from regions around the world. The passion became avocation when Ken left the Bluegrass State to attend enology and viticulture classes at UC-Davis. Eight years were spent winemaking for Ventana Vineyards and Talbott Vineyards in Monterey County of California’s central coast. Friends from the Willamette Valley piqued Ken’s interest in the region when they would visit, and a trip to the Northern Willamette Valley in 1982 convinced him that this was where the finest Pinot Noir in North America was being grown. In 1986, with family, belongings and 10 barrels in tow, Ken moved to McMinnville and created Panther Creek Cellars. His concept of focusing on vineyarddesignate bottling began during those years at Panther Creek and was cemented as a core philosophy in 1994 when Ken Wright Cellars was founded in historic downtown Carlton. Given his appreciation of sense of place, it was a given that Ken would contribute to the locations and industry near and dear to his heart. Instrumental in organizing the six new American Viticultural Areas (AVA) in the Northern Willamette Valley that define in detail the distinct growing areas within the region, he wrote the proposition for the Yamhill-Carlton AVA and served as the association’s first President. Ken was also a founding member and chair of SALUD, a partnership between Pinot Noir producers, Medical Teams International and Tuality Hospital to provide free health and dental care for the seasonal workers who tend our vineyards.

We generate solar power, use locally produced biodiesel, are Salmon Safe and LIVE Certified, and were one of the first vineyards in Oregon to become Carbon Neutral. St. Innocent was founded in 1988 by its winemaker and president, Mark Vlossak. We produce small lots of handmade, vineyard-designated wine from some of the best sites in the Willamette Valley. Since our founding, we have grown from 600 cases that first year to our current production of 8-10,000 cases, yet each wine is still handcrafted in the very same manner. Year after year, St. Innocent Winery has received recognition from throughout the country and around the world for its outstanding Pinot Noir, beautifully-crafted white wines, and fair pricing. Mark’s raison d’etre is to produce wines that reflect their terroir, the specific qualities of the vintage, and his vision of wine’s place in life: to complement and extend the pleasure of food. To accomplish his goal, he picks fully ripe fruit at the point of maximum complexity and ferments the fruit to extract the exact balance of flavor and tannins desired. This produces wines that display their unique fruit character as well as secondary flavors specific to the terroir of the site: spice, pepper, mushroom, earth, etc. The result is wines with higher acid levels and diverse yet harmonizing flavors.

Our mission is to create elegant, classic Oregon wines from the Willamette Valley Appellation while serving as stewards of the land. Founder Jim Bernau believes we are rewarded with wines that taste better when made from naturally grown wine grapes. Tending the vines by hand and using minimalist winemaking techniques in small-batch fermentations, we strive to capture the unique sense of place that comes from our soils. We were the first to use natural cork in our bottles certified by the Rainforest Alliance to Forest Stewardship Council standards and offer 10 cents for any wine bottle returned to our tasting room for recycling. To reduce our carbon footprint, all company tractors and delivery vehicles run on biofuel – and we offer up to 50 gallons a month free to our employees for commuting to work. While the Muscat adds flowery sweetness, the barrel fermented portions of the Pinot Gris add a kiss of toast and richness. Drink now - 2013.
2009 Willamette Valley Vineyards Elton Pinot Noir
Red wines will be easily accessible, with pleasant, focused fruit and supple tannins. The stylistic vision is pure Pinot Noir fruit with a soft juicy mouthfeel, balanced oak and soft, sweet ripe tannins. The methodology includes attention to detail from vineyard to bottle. Picked at peak ripeness, the fruit was gently destemmed, with approximately 50% of the berries remaining intact for intra-berry fermentation (which adds fruitiness). Prior to fermentation, the must underwent a 4 day pre-fermentation cold soak providing improved fruitiness and mouthfeel. On the fourth day, the must was inoculated with indigenous yeast. After 8-12 days of fermentation in small ¾ to 1 ½ ton fermenters (punched down by hand), the must was pressed out with about 1% residual sugar and allowed to settle in the tank overnight. The new wine was barreled with light, fluffy lees where it finished primary fermentation and underwent malolactic fermentation.

The 2009 vintage will be known for its balanced acidity, bright, ripe fruit favors and lower alcohol that pair wonderfully with food. After 8-12 days of fermentation in small ž to 1 ½ ton fermenters (punched down by hand), the must was pressed out with about 1% residual sugar and allowed to settle in the tank overnight. The new wine was barreled with light, fluffy lees where it finished primary fermentation and underwent malolactic fermentation.

315 High Street SE • Salem, Oregon Karo Thom was born in Port Townsend, Washington into a family of gardeners, cooks, and craftspeople, restaurant ownership was not an unlikely career path. She first started cooking and baking with her Danish/Welsh grandmother at an early age. There were always wonderfully fresh ingredients to use from the home garden Copyright by Statesman Journal. Reprinted with request. and fresh fish and shellfish from Puget Sound. Food preparation and family meals were part of every day. Graduating from Mills College in the San Francisco Bay Area brought exposure to cuisines and cultures from around the world and there began a life-long love of travel. This has included studying food and cooking in Japan, Western Europe (especially Denmark, Italy, Belgium and France), Mexico, Central America and the Caribbean. Her latest venture into the food world, Alcyone Café & Catering in Salem, reflects this history in its changing menu and use of fresh, local and natural ingredients. The inspiration for the physical structure of Alcyone comes from cafes in Rome and Naples in Italy where older buildings with challenging architecture are repurposed with new, fresh, modern interiors. Alcyone is also the Latin name for the kingfisher bird, whose colors are reflected in the interior of the café. The service at the café is refined but casual. The contrast of white porcelain and ‘green’ disposable ware reflects our homage to the classics and awareness of our environment. Our menu items are made to order, our baked goods are made in house and taking good care of our guests is our priority and pleasure. Come and see and taste the flavors of Alcyone!

Executive Chef Kristoffer Spencer is classically trained in French Cuisine. He spent one year working at Thomas Keller’s Michelin Star-winning Bouchon and Ad Hoc. When Kris returned to the bounty of the Northwest to work with Silverton’s Jeff Nizlek, then, after years of learning from the master of Northwest cuisine, he left to pursue running his own kitchen at Robert’s Crossing. That is where Steve Ortiz met him and convinced him to become part of Roth’s Creative Catering. Donna Smith brings her extensive training in food service to the Creative Catering desk. Her culinary training began at the age of 15 where she worked as prep assistant in small but fast-paced restaurants, moving up to running kitchens at 17. Her “formal” culinary training was at WCI in Portland Oregon where she was one of 17 to earn Le Cordon Bleu certification. Since those early days Donna has been using her culinary passion to create and develop menus for numerous restaurants and catering companies and for the last six years she used her talents to develop cooking curriculum and teach at a local cooking school. The Roth’s Creative Catering team Executive Chef Kris Spencer and Event Coordinator Donna Smith specialize in custom designed menus ranging from deliciously simple to sublimely elegant. AUCTION PURCHASE GUIDELINES TRAVEL PACKAGE STIPULATIONS Before bidding, please read carefully the following conditions of purchase for all travel packages. Travel packages sold through the Auction contain only those elements listed in the auction lot description. 1. Air travel must not be interrupted. Airfare is to be booked point-to-point. Any changes or additions to travel will be at the buyer’s expense. This condition also applies to rental cars or other ground transportation not included in the auction lot description. 2. Expiration dates are NOT flexible. Expiration dates have been carefully selected by the donors involved. To request an extension beyond the expiration date could place undue burden on the donor and jeopardize future donations to the Auction. 3. All reservations (air, rental cars, lodging, etc.) must be made within dates specified in supporting documentation and as contained in the auction package. 4. Once a trip is scheduled and confirmed by the buyers, changes may not be allowed by the donors. If a donor is unable to accommodate requests to reschedule or if a requested change results in a donor not being able to honor all components of the trip, Family Building Blocks/The Uncorked Wine Auction will not refund any portion of the trip purchase. 5. Some trip features or amenities may have to be paid by the buyers at the time of use. Such expenditures will not be reimbursed unless specifically listed in the auction item description as qualified for reimbursement by the Auction. 6. PLEASE NOTE: If a buyer donates a travel package purchased at the Auction to another charity, or it is resold to another person, bidder assumes ALL risk. Family Building Blocks/The Uncorked Wine Auction will not be responsible for honoring any elements contained in travel packages purchased outside the Auction.
40

Loose The Pig is a B-side rock and blues cover band with a few originals added for local flavor. 12 Thailand Four Seasons Welcome to Paradise, or more commonly known as the island of Koh Samui in Thailand! Lounge for 7 days, 6 nights at the always luxurious Four Seasons Hotel in a premier one-bedroom villa. Your villa includes a sprawling bedroom, palatial bathroom and outdoor living space that includes a private infinity pool overlooking the Gulf of Siam and its pristine white sands. Away from your opulent suite, you’ll be taken on a leisurely Elephant trek to the island’s most dramatic waterfall. The rest of your days, choose between kayaking, snorkeling, diving or just relaxing on the private beach. We recommend staying at least one-night in Bangok (where the world’s your oyster). Then you’re off to the third-largest Thai island, Koh Samui which is a 45-minute flight from bustling Bangkok. Though the island’s white sand, swaying coconut palms and calm waters help maintain its away-from-it-all charm. A $1,000 travel voucher is included for airfare or additional expenses, as well as a Sony TX10 waterproof camera to capture your vacation memories. (Valid 6/30/2012 through 6/30/2013. Accommodations in Bangkok not included.)

13 Opus One Private Dinner Gather seven close friends for an evening of very fine wines and deliciously paired food at the home of Lee and Jeanne Sjothun, an event co-hosted with Bruce and Sharon Douglas. You’ll work your way through an Opus One vertical from 1994 through 2003 over a multi-course meal. Chef David Rosales, of La Capitale and Andaluz, will be preparing your thoughtfully paired multi-course gourmet dinner. Opus One began with a partnership between famed winemakers Lucien Sionneau of Chateau Mouton Rothschild and Timothy Mondavi in 1979. Back then Opus One became known as America’s first ultra-premium wine and the tradition continues to modern day. Each vintage of Opus One was purchased upon release and properly stored in the Douglas’ cellar. (On a mutually agreeable date. Wines will remain in the Douglas’ cellar until the date of the dinner.)

18 Commemorative Painting Local artist, Sue-Del McCulloch’s work is in public and private collections across the nation. Sue-Del was a painting major at University of Oregon, later studying with Carl Hall and Robert Hess at Willamette University. Today she presents us with “Blue Hour”. Artist’s notes on our commemorative painting, “Blue Hour”: “In this painting, the hour of falling light of a reflected sunset runs its cool blue shadows through warm, ripe wheat. This is a view looking east from my country acreage where I have lived for nearly 30 years. Here the land drops so gently down to the Willamette as to hide all evidence of the River and its attendant highway, creating the illusion of open lands running on forever. The light of the seasons, weather and time, ceaselessly transforms the land, making it new, moment to moment. I love this carved-wide Valley held in the generous hug of the Cascade and Coast Ranges, where the farmed fields ride the layered hills up to the mountains and the enormous sky. For those of us so blessed to live here, it is the landscape of home.” (“Blue Hour” is 30” x 36”, acrylic on canvas with a wax finish.)

Zenith Vineyard is the expression of our passion for fine wine; our desire to do the best for the land, and our goal of making awesome Pinot Noir. Wine should come from a beautiful place. In everything we do, we strive to exist in harmony with the land, keeping the vineyard pristine, the soils healthy, the farm life rich. We are committed to the principal of long-run success. At Zenith Vineyard, we try to harmonize our goals for the business with what is best for the land, and those that work it. It is the same commitment with our events venue. Our goal is to offer a site that brings high quality, service and style to a beautiful vineyard setting. We believe we have something very unique to offer.
Ron Cooper Photography
Sustainability speaks to the vision we have of our job as winegrowers. The fruit for outstanding wines can only come from beautiful origins. It is our commitment to respect the land, the vineyard, and the wines that come from our site as things of great beauty, to be carefully and lovingly tended. We are caretakers only. We are charged with delivering this parcel of land to the next generation with healthy soils, intact biology and a vineyard that has a brighter future ahead than even its greatness of the past. Everything we do, we try to do with the attitude of “we’re doing this forever, don’t cut corners, don’t make short-run decisions.” Our family lives on the farm and our extended family works here. Thus, we are highly motivated to keep Zenith Vineyard a beautiful, healthy place. Zenith Vineyard practices sustainable farming and is Live Certified. We’ve enjoyed great success with the Zenith Vineyard wines. Recently, The Wine Spectator blessed our 2009 Estate Pinot Noir with a 92 point rating and our Tempranillo and Chardonnay also were rated in the 90s by Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate. We hope you will enjoy the wines and our hospitality as well!
A special thanks to Nicci Ischer of Dobbes Family Estate for coordinating our amazing wine service tonight.
