Originally from California and Scotland, Nick and Sheila Nicholas met in London and married in the early 1980s. In 2001, they brought their family to Oregon’s Chehalem Mountains, settling in the overgrown walnut and plum orchard which was to become the home of Nicholas Estate Vineyard. Intending from the start to make estate wines that truly reflect their origin, they carefully selected Pommard and four Pinot Noir clones on differing rootstocks to compensate for soil depth and offer the best blending options in the finished wines. Then they added one acre each of Riesling and Gewürztraminer on the steepest slopes. A further 6 acres divided between Riesling, Chardonnay and Wädenswil Pinot Noir were planted in 2008 according to the biodynamic calendar. They named their wines Anam Cara Cellars after the Celtic words meaning friend of my soul. The vineyard they planted is pictured on the label, framed by connecting vines to symbolize the relationship between the vineyard, the wines it gives us, and friends who enjoy them together. From the beginning, each Anam Cara Cellars wine has been made entirely from estate grown fruit and is a true reflection of the vineyard, vintage and terroir. Certified L.I.V.E., farming at Nicholas Estate also incorporates organic and biodynamic practices out of respect for the land. In just a few short years, the vineyard has already demonstrated its potential with highly-rated Pinot Noirs, and whites with exceptional accolades.

Bethel Heights Vineyard is a family-owned and operated winery located in the historic Eola Hills northwest of Salem. Brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their wives, Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb, established the vineyard in 1977 and released their first wines in 1984. Over the past several years Bethel Heights has expanded to include second-generation leadership and ownership. Terry and Marilyn’s son, Ben Casteel, now helms the winemaking team, and Ted and Pat’s daughter, Mimi Casteel, is the general manager and viticulturist. Other family members are involved with various aspects of the business, truly making Bethel Heights a family affair. Planted between 1977 and 1979, Bethel Heights was one of the first vineyards in the Eola Hills. The estate vineyard encompasses 50 planted acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc, and the family also owns adjacent Justice Vineyard, planted between 1999 and 2001 to 20 acres of Pinot Noir. In 2008, the family purchased nearby Ingram Lane Vineyard, with 22 acres planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. The winery produces 13,000 cases of premium wine annually, specializing in own-rooted, old-vine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Aromatic white varieties including Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Grüner veltliner sourced from both the estate vineyard and other Oregon sites round out the Bethel Heights portfolio. The family is known for its generous service to the Oregon wine industry over the years. They have long demonstrated leadership in building sustainability and stewardship of the land into all aspects of growing grapes and making fine wine.

The Coelho family is passionate about family, farming, winemaking, and business. What started out as a small dream has become a magnificent reality for the Coelho family. In the beginning, Dave, Deolinda and their children hand planted the vines at their estate. Now Dave, Deolinda, their four children, three spouses and two grandchildren can be found working the vines, rolling wine barrels, designing labels and stocking bottles in the tasting room. As their grandparents did for them, Dave and Deolinda are passing on a passion for the winemaking traditions of their Portuguese family. Prior to the beginning of Coelho Winery, Dave and Deolinda Coelho farmed approximately 800 acres of tomatoes, sugar beets, corn and alfalfa in California’s San Joaquin Valley. Seeking fertile soil and a place to raise their four young children, Dave and Deolinda took them on a camping trip throughout Oregon, Washington and Idaho in 1990. They quickly fell in love with the Willamette Valley, and a little town called Amity. In June of 1991, the family moved to Amity, just in time for their oldest son, David, to begin kindergarten. When Dave and Deolinda are not at the winery in Amity, you can find them working in the vineyard, volunteering in the community, cooking large family dinners and playing their children and grandchildren at cards. David Coelho joined the winery full-time in the summer of 2010. He is the head winemaker and has actively participated in the estate vineyard since 2002. When not handcrafting award winning wines, David can be found with his wife Christina enjoying the beautiful northwest or baking German treats at home. Samuel Coelho joined the winery full-time in 2009. He manages the brand development, marketing and sales. Samuel has actively participated in the estate vineyard since 2002. When not traveling nationally or internationally for Coelho Winery, he can be found exploring the globe with his wife Bryn and son Con, experimenting in their kitchen, and working on the vineyard conversion of their 143 acres near Perrydale, Oregon. The Coelho sisters, Stephanie Johnson and Jeanne Coelho, live outside the Willamette Valley, but they continue to be valuable assets to Coelho Winery. Stephanie, her husband Eric and their daughter Elizabeth help host the annual Coelho Winery Harvest Party held at the vineyard. From her home in San Francisco, California, Jeanne assists in the design of marketing materials.

Cristom’s founder and owner, Paul Gerrie, used his skills as an engineer and avid researcher to pursue his passion for wine. On his travels to France, he was introduced to the traditional growing practices of the Burgundy region. He learned that soil and site were key in developing the complexity of the fruit. After a 1991 visit to the International Pinot Noir Celebration in Oregon, Paul decided the time was right to leave the East Coast and bring his family and his passion for great Pinot Noir to Oregon’s burgeoning wine country. But their journey wasn’t complete without a winemaker who shared Paul’s vision of “letting the land make the wines.” Enter Steve Doerner (pictured above) who, after 30 years of experience, still believes the winemaker’s job is to “optimize what nature—the vineyard—provides.” In addition to his reputation as a master winemaker with “keen intuition,” Steve is a biochemist who had been making Pinot Noir in California for 14 years. And so, with a passion that only wine enthusiasts embrace and a precision that can only come from a chemist and an engineer, the two set out to cultivate their vision, which today, can be seen in the benchmark Pinot Noirs that are crafted from Cristom’s 75 acres.

Cubanisimo Vineyards is a small, family owned vineyard located in Salem, Oregon. Its founder and owner, Mauricio Collada, Jr. MD was born in Havana, Cuba. The family came to the United States in 1962, a few years after the revolution, where he finished school, and went on to become a doctor. An opportunity at a private medical practice is what first brought Mauricio westward to Oregon, where he fell in love with the natural beauty of the land, decided to settle and raise a family. He started his venture into the wine industry in 1991 when he planted 8 acres of Pinot Noir on a Southeast facing hillside on his burgeoning estate property in the Willamette Valley. For several years, Cubanisimo operated solely as a vineyard, selling grapes to larger wineries in the region, including King Estate and Erath. In 2003, Cubanisimo decided to keep half the harvest to produce under their own label, Cubanisimo Vineyards. The name Cubanisimo is a homage to their Cuban heritage, roughly translating to mean “very Cuban. The wine was good, and popular. By 2005 they were keeping all of the grapes and they began construction of a tasting room. They’ve continued to add onto the vineyard to include planting Pinot Gris, and begun making a Rosado of Pinot Noir, perfect for those hotter days. They continue to see huge growth in the popularity of their wines as well as their events that usually include live salsa bands, salsa dancing and Cuban tapas. Mauricio and Debra Collada are equally passionate about Pinot and look forward to sharing that passion with you.

Mahonia Vineyard is a sustainably farmed, family-owned vineyard located in the Willamette Valley foothills south of Salem, Oregon. For over 25 years, they have specialized in producing high quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wine grapes which are sold to some of the most celebrated winemakers in the Willamette Valley. Each year, they hold back a few tons of their best fruit and work with local winemaker Chris Berg (Roots Wine & Vineyard) in order to create limited bottlings of ‘honest wine’–wine that represents the unique habitat of their vineyard site; their values; and their commitment to producing high quality wines at affordable prices. They generate solar power, use locally produced biodiesel, are Salmon Safe and LIVE Certified, and were one of the first vineyards in Oregon to become Carbon Neutral. Their definition of profit includes giving back to Oregon communities, especially through programs benefitting children such as Family Building Blocks, and those benefitting the environment such as SOLV.

At Owen Roe, they are committed to practicing the highest standards of winemaking. Since their first vintage in 1999, their goal has been simple; to produce beautiful wines from superior sites in the Pacific Northwest - a place where the fruit ripens slowly and fully, resulting in excellent acidity and balance. All of their grapes are hand harvested, handled with minimal processing, small-lot fermented and aged in French oak barrels. David O’Reilly is originally from Ireland, where he lived with his family until their move to British Columbia in his early teen years. He eventually made his way down to Ojai, California where he earned a degree in Philosophy. After graduation, David was hired by a small winery in Santa Barbara where he honed his palate and knowledge of winemaking. In 1999, he formed Owen Roe Winery and has been making wine ever since. David has worked towards championing winemaking in the Yakima Valley and is considered a pioneer in the AVA. For O’Reilly, this region presents the New World with an opportunity to honor Old World wines by producing fruit-filled and age worthy vintages.

St. Innocent was founded in 1988 by its winemaker and president, Mark Vlossak. They produce small lots of handmade, vineyard-designated wine from some of the best sites in the Willamette Valley. Since their founding, they have grown from 600 cases that first year to our current production of 8-10,000 cases, yet each wine is still handcrafted in the very same manner. Year after year, St. Innocent Winery has received recognition from throughout the country and around the world for its outstanding Pinot Noir, beautifully-crafted white wines, and fair pricing. Mark’s raison d’etre is to produce wines that reflect their terroir, the specific qualities of the vintage, and his vision of wine’s place in life: to complement and extend the pleasure of food. To accomplish his goal, he picks fully ripe fruit at the point of maximum complexity and ferments the fruit to extract the exact balance of flavor and tannins desired. This produces wines that display their unique fruit character as well as secondary flavors specific to the terroir of the site: spice, pepper, mushroom, earth, etc. The result is wines with higher acid levels and diverse yet harmonizing flavors.

Willamette Valley Vineyards has been producing high-quality, sustainably grown Pinot Noir and other cool-climate varieties for more than 28 years – earning the distinction as “One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Their mission is to create elegant, classic Oregon wines from the Willamette Valley Appellation while serving as stewards of the land. Founder Jim Bernau believes we are rewarded with wines that taste better when made from naturally grown wine grapes. Tending the vines by hand and using minimalist winemaking techniques in small-batch fermentations, they strive to capture the unique sense of place that comes from their soils. Willamette Valley Vineyards was the first to use natural cork in their bottles certified by the Rainforest Alliance to Forest Stewardship Council standards and offer 10 cents for any wine bottle returned to their tasting room for recycling. To reduce their carbon footprint, all company tractors and delivery vehicles run on biofuel – and they offer up to 50 gallons a month free to their employees for commuting to work. Willamette Valley Vineyards wines have been served at the White House, the James Beard House and are available at some the finest restaurants and wine shops throughout the world.

BREWERY
Meet Dad, Lee, along with Sons, Mike, Nick, and Matt. The Radtke’s have called Salem ‘home’ for decades so it only made sense to make their dream of building a microbrewery happen in the heart of the city. With what began in 2005 as three brothers home-brewing at the family residence, turned into so much more. Before they knew it, they were needing larger- and more- equipment. That’s when Lee decided to jump in. The art of being a designer craftsman has run in the family, generation after generation; especially in metalwork. So when the brothers needed a larger masher, Lee built one for them. This continued until 2009 when they had decided to establish, Gilgamesh Brewing. With help from family and friends alike, Lee, Mike, Nick, and Matt have successfully built what is now called, Gilgamesh- The Campus. The Campus is home to a new full-service and family-friendly restaurant pub with the beloved and much larger brewery attached. When you enter you will notice that the majority of the metal fabrication and woodwork that you see was handcrafted by the owners. The restaurant also keeps many products local. For example, you will only find locally distilled spirits and wine.

2012 Mahonia Vineyard Rosé of Pinot Noir Bright, crisp fruit flavors of strawberry, white plum and orange make this wine extremely drinkable and easy to pair with most foods, specifically fish, poultry, spicy dishes, salads and cheese.
2012 Mahonia Vineyard Pinot Gris Nothing short of a work of art: bright and focused, balancing ripe fruit, zesty acidity and a mineral laden structure. This is truly fine wine, not just a fine Pinot Gris.

2011 Owen Roe Pinot Noir Eola Amity Hills Bright aromas of raspberry, black cherry and toasty oak are enhanced with beautiful Pommard characteristics of cinnamon, dark cocoa nibs and coffee. These spicy notes lead to an elegant, mouth coating finish.
2012 Owen Roe Pinot Gris Crawford Beck Vineyard At first glance, this Pinot Gris is aromatic with hints of honey, lychee and banana. Within just a few minutes after opening the bottle, aromas of slate and mineral come to the forefront. Flavors of Kaffir lime pithe, grapefruit and pineapple are nicely balanced with zippy acidity and a clean finish.

2012 St. Innocent Winery Oeil de Perdrix, Temperance Hill Vineyard Oeil de perdrix translates to “eye of the partridge” and is an old name for a very pale rosé wine made from Pinot Noir. In many ways it is more similar to German Riesling than Pinot Noir except for its plum scents. It is excellent with fish, pork tenderloin, cold meats, and picnic foods.

TASTING WINES Willamette Valley Vineyards 8800 Enchanted Way SE • Turner, Oregon 97392 • 503.588.9463 wvv.com
2010 Willamette Valley Vineyards Tualatin Estate Pinot Noir Tualatin Estate Vineyard was founded by one of Oregon’s first emigrating Napa Valley winemakers, Bill Fuller, in 1971. Garnet red in the glass, this lustrous beauty showcases classic floral notes of rose petal and violet complemented by hints of red fruit, pumpkin pie spice and crème brulee. Flavors flow beautifully through the sip starting with bright, fruit flavors of raspberry and cranberry moving through bubble gum and clover honey. The round mouthfeel is supported by a bright acidity and supple tannins that melt into the finish. Peak drinkability now – 2016.
2010 Willamette Valley Vineyards Elton Pinot Noir One of Oregon’s top ten vineyards, Elton Vineyard is owned by Dick and Betty O’Brien. They planted the vineyard, beginning in 1983 on land inherited from Betty’s parents, Elton and Peggy Ingram, hence the name Elton Vineyard and the address Ingram Lane. This wine opens with rich aromas of blackberry, marionberry and cherry cola, followed by earthy notes of mushroom, forest floor and rose petal. Flavors mirror aromas leading with lively cherry, black fruit and cassis. Smooth tannins and bright acidity create a rich mouthfeel and well-rounded body that leads to the mouthwatering cherry finish. Peak drinkability now – 2016.
2010 Willamette Valley Vineyards Estate Chardonnay This bright and rich Chardonnay opens with buttery characteristics followed by crisp aromas of apple, pear, nougat and lemon bar. The sip has a soft and creamy entry with flavors of leachy nut and vanilla layered over notes of almond and oak. The round body has smooth, buttery tannins that play well against the lively acidity and balanced mouthfeel. The graham cracker finish is long and lingering, inviting another sip. Drink now – 2017.

A LETTER FROM OUR VENUE SPONSOR
Welcome to Zenith Vineyard! Who would have believed six years ago that the Uncorked Wine Auction at Zenith Vineyard would have developed into Salem’s premier gala event? Who would have believed that Salem would step up so generously and embrace the mission of Family Building Blocks? You believed, and you did it. We can all be so proud of what we’ve created together in support of our community and families in our neighborhoods and beyond. Zenith Vineyard is all about sustainability. Our vineyard is certified by LIVE as sustainable. Set in human terms, sustainability perhaps starts and ends with family. We see Family Building Blocks’ work as vital to sustaining our neighborhoods, our schools, and the fabric of the community. Just as we lovingly tend the vineyard, hoping for a blessed harvest, you all are the vinedressers of our community – making an investment now, applying support when needed most. The payoff will be in the strength of the families we support now, continuing ten and twenty years hence. The fruit of that investment will surely be sweet. Join us in celebrating tonight! Let us together build a successful legacy in support of Family Building Blocks and our community. And we will enjoy some amazing wine and food as well!

AUCTION PURCHASE GUIDELINES TRAVEL PACKAGE STIPULATIONS Before bidding, please read carefully the following conditions of purchase for all travel packages. Travel packages sold through the Auction contain only those elements listed in the auction lot description. 1. Air travel must not be interrupted. Airfare is to be booked point-to-point. Any changes or additions to travel will be at the buyer’s expense. This condition also applies to rental cars or other ground transportation not included in the auction lot description. 2. All reservations (air, rental cars, lodging, etc.) must be made within dates specified in supporting documentation and as contained in the auction package. 4. Once a trip is scheduled and confirmed by the buyers, changes may not be allowed by the donors. Some trip features or amenities may have to be paid by the buyers at the time of use. Such expenditures will not be reimbursed unless specifically listed in the auction item description as qualified for reimbursement by the Auction. 6. PLEASE NOTE: If a buyer donates a travel package purchased at the Auction to another charity, or it is resold to another person, bidder assumes ALL risk. Family Building Blocks/The Uncorked Wine Auction will not be responsible for honoring any elements contained in travel packages purchased outside the Auction.

18 “Possibility” It’s an honor to highlight a local artist every year at Uncorked Wine Auction. We are proud to have Ruth Armitage and her stunning “Possibility” painting as our commemorative piece. This watercolor represents Ruth’s connection with life in rural Oregon. Ruth is inspired by her connection to the land, specifically to her family farm. She paints aerial views of the fields and forests with an emphasis on color and mark making. This, as well as her interest in genealogy, is evident in “Possibility.” “Possibility” is painted with watercolor on Yupo; a synthetic, non-absorbent paper that enhances textural effects. The framed size is 33”x 27”.

20 Turley- The Zin Master In a region of Cabernet grapes, Larry Turley is turning heads in Napa Valley with his big and bold Zins. Turley’s Zinfandels are coveted by their fiercely loyal fan base, which makes these wines very difficult to come by. These iconic Zinfandels are born from old vines, which were planted in the 1900’s. Larry Turley, a founder of Stag’s Leap Winery, with the help of his sister Helen Turley, regarded as one of California’s most influential winemakers, focused on his very favorite grape. The resulting wines are unprecedented in their richness and concentration.
