WINERIES

Alexana Estate Vineyards and Winery was born of a chance meeting between veteran Oregon winemaker Lynn PennerAsh and Dr. Madaiah Revana, owner of Revana Family Vineyard in California’s Napa Valley. With the help of PennerAsh, Dr. Revana acquired the uniquely situated 80acre estate located on the Northwestern edge of the Dundee Hills AVA in the spring of 2005. This property’s unique composition of 18 various marine sedimentary and volcanic soil types make it the perfect place for Alexana to continue Revana’s commitment to producing exceptional estate grown wines. Each vineyard block of Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Riesling and Chardonnay is individually cultivated in a celebration of the property’s diverse soils, clonal selections and microclimates using LIVE certified sustainable farming practices. In the cellar, Winemaker Bryan Weil carries out Penner-Ash’s minimalist approach to winemaking by focusing on small lot fermentations in a recently completed 3-story gravity flow winery. A Gold LEED-Certified tasting room is now open to the public daily and private tours are available by appointment.

Bethel Heights Vineyard is a family-owned and operated winery located in the historic Eola Hills northwest of Salem. Brothers Ted and Terry Casteel and their wives, Pat Dudley and Marilyn Webb, established the vineyard in 1977 and released their first wines in 1984. Over the past several years Bethel Heights has expanded to include second-generation leadership and ownership. Terry and Marilyn’s son, Ben Casteel, now helms the winemaking team, and Ted and Pat’s daughter, Mimi Casteel, is the general manager and viticulturist. Other family members are involved with various aspects of the business, truly making Bethel Heights a family affair. Planted between 1977 and 1979, Bethel Heights was one of the first vineyards in the Eola Hills. The estate vineyard encompasses 50 planted acres of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, and Pinot Blanc, and the family also owns adjacent Justice Vineyard, planted between 1999 and 2001 to 20 acres of Pinot Noir. In 2008, the family purchased nearby Ingram Lane Vineyard, with 22 acres planted to Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and Riesling. The winery produces 13,000 cases of premium wine annually, specializing in own-rooted, old-vine Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Aromatic white varieties including Pinot Gris, Pinot Blanc, Gewürztraminer, Riesling, and Grüner veltliner sourced from both the estate vineyard and other Oregon sites round out the Bethel Heights portfolio. The family is known for its generous service to the Oregon wine industry over the years. They have long demonstrated leadership in building sustainability and stewardship of the land into all aspects of growing grapes and making fine wine.

FOLLOW THE RABBIT TO FIND A PORTUGEUSE WINEMAKING LEGACY Portuguese wine has long been considered the best-kept secret of Europe. Winemaking techniques of Portugal have been influenced by the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, Greeks, and originated with the Romans. Coelho Winery is proud to bring this long winemaking legacy to Amity, Oregon. COELHO (KOO-AL-yoo) Portuguese translation: Rabbit WINE ANCESTRY Dave’s father, Joe Coelho, best enjoyed wine surrounded by loved ones. A dairyman, Joe made Portuguese wine for family and friends, instilling a love and appreciation for the wine experience in Dave. Deolinda’s grandfather, José (Joe) Serpa was a carpenter who made wine in the family basement. Legend is that one of his kids siphoned wine for friends to enjoy. Finding the wine quite tasty, the boys were found the next morning, the siphon still in the barrel, sleeping on the basement floor bringing an end to Joe’s winemaking. THE COELHO FAMILY Today the Coelho family is involved in all aspects of Coelho wines. If Dave and Deolinda are not at Coelho Winery in downtown Amity, you can find them working at the vineyard, volunteering in the community, cooking large family dinners, passing on their passion for wine, or beating their children and grandchildren at cards. The Coelho children all play a part in Coelho Winery’s successes as well. Sons David and Samuel Coelho actively participate in the daily operations and management of the winery. David, head winemaker, joined the winery full-time in the summer of 2010, learning how to create premium wine from his parents. Samuel, director of marketing, sales, and brand development departments, joined the winery fulltime in 2009. His position takes him to all corners of the United States and world, as Coelho Winery increasingly becomes a symbol of premium Pinot Noir on an international level. Stephanie Johnson and Jeanne Coelho, the Coelho sisters, live outside the Willamette Valley, but continue to be valuable assets to the winery.

Paul and Eileen Gerrie established Cristom Vineyards in 1992. They had been attending the IPNC for years, and there developed a passion for Pinot Noir. Present from the beginning were winemaker Steve Doerner and vineyard manager Mark Feltz, both arriving with prior knowledge of Pinot Noir. The estate has 60 acres in vine, which are planted primarily to four distinct Pinot Noir vineyards named for Gerrie family matriarchs. Hallmarks of Cristom’s winemaking are a large percentage of whole clusters, native yeast fermentation, and minimal handling throughout the winemaking process. Estate Pinot Gris, Estate Viognier and Estate Syrah make up the balance of their 13,000 case production.

Mahonia Vineyard is a sustainably farmed, family-owned vineyard located in the Willamette Valley foothills south of Salem, Oregon. For over 25 years, they have specialized in producing high quality Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris and Chardonnay wine grapes which are sold to some of the most celebrated winemakers in the Willamette Valley. Each year, they hold back a few tons of their best fruit and work with local winemaker Chris Berg (Roots Wine & Vineyard) in order to create limited bottlings of ‘honest wine’–wine that represents the unique habitat of their vineyard site; their values; and their commitment to producing high quality wines at affordable prices. They generate solar power, use locally produced biodiesel, are Salmon Safe and LIVE Certified, and were one of the first vineyards in Oregon to become Carbon Neutral. Their definition of profit includes giving back to Oregon communities, especially through programs benefitting children such as Family Building Blocks, and those benefitting the environment such as SOLV.

Sineann, with winemaker Peter Rosback, is a small producer of highly intense wine in Yamhill County, Oregon. Sineann sources fruit from some of the best vineyards in the region; Pinot Noir and Pinot Gris from the Willamette Valley and the Hood River Valley, Cabernet, Merlot and Zinfandel from the Columbia Valley, Gewurztraminer from the Willamette Valley and the Columbia Gorge. Sineann has even started making wine from the Napa Valley. Their growers have great pride in the grapes they provide. Almost all the wines are vineyard designated. No expense is spared in the pursuit of great wine. Crop levels are kept very low, one to three tons per acre. Winemaking is meticulous. All fruit is hand-sorted, delicately de-stemmed, punched down by hand, gently pressed and gravity-racked. The wines are aged in new and one-year old French oak. The bottom line is, Sineann strives to make great wine. It’s the only kind of wine that makes it onto their dinner table. It’s exciting to make and gratifying to share. They believe that food and drink, lovingly prepared, make for happier and healthier people.

WINERIES

St. Innocent was founded in 1988 by its winemaker and president, Mark Vlossak. They produce small lots of handmade, vineyard-designated wine from some of the best sites in the Willamette Valley. Since their founding, they have grown from 600 cases that first year to a current production of 8-10,000 cases, yet each wine is still handcrafted in the very same manner. Year after year, St. Innocent Winery has received recognition from throughout the country and around the world for its outstanding Pinot Noir, beautifully-crafted white wines, and fair pricing. Mark’s raison d’etre is to produce wines that reflect their terroir, the specific qualities of the vintage, and his vision of wine’s place in life: to complement and extend the pleasure of food. To accomplish his goal, he picks fully ripe fruit at the point of maximum complexity and ferments the fruit to extract the exact balance of flavor and tannins desired. This produces wines that display their unique fruit character as well as secondary flavors specific to the terroir of the site: spice, pepper, mushroom, earth, etc. The result is wines with higher acid levels and diverse yet harmonizing flavors.

Trinity is a small familyowned and operated vineyard and tasting room located in the historic Jory Hills South of Salem. Steve and Cindy Parker along with their daughter Kristen established the vineyard in 1998 and planted it all in three different clones of Pinot Noir, hence the name Trinity. The first wines were released in 2006, which included our 2004 Estate Pinot Noir and 2004 Pinot Gris. Producing only about a thousand cases a year allows Trinity the opportunity to focus on small batch, handcrafted wines that are true to their varietal characteristics. Farming the densely planted vineyard by hand, and utilizing sustainable low–impact farming practices, along with the red clay volcanic soils predominate in the area, produce some beautifully rich and complex fruit. In addition to Pinot Noir, fruit is sourced from Washington State to produce Viognier, Grenache and Sangiovese.

Willamette Valley Vineyards has been producing high quality, sustainably grown Pinot Noir and other coolclimate varieties since 1983 – earning the distinction as “One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers” by Wine Enthusiast Magazine and “2011 Winery of the Year” from Wine & Spirits Magazine. Willamette Valley Vineyard’s mission is to create elegant, classic Oregon wines from the Willamette Valley Appellation while serving as stewards of the land. Founder Jim Bernau believes we are rewarded with wines that taste better when made from naturally grown wine grapes. Tending the vines by hand and using minimalist winemaking techniques in small-batch fermentations, they strive to capture the unique sense of place that comes from their soils. They were the first to use natural cork in their bottles certified by the Rainforest Alliance to Forest Stewardship Council standards and offer 10 cents for any wine bottle returned to the tasting room for recycling. To reduce their carbon footprint, all company tractors and delivery vehicles run on biofuel – and they offer up to 50 gallons a month free to employees for commuting to work. Willamette Valley Vineyards wines have been served at the White House, the James Beard House, and they are available at some the finest restaurants and wine shops throughout the world.

BREWERY

Meet Dad, Lee, along with sons, Mike, Nick, and Matt. The Radtke’s have called Salem ‘home’ for decades so it only made sense to make their dream of building a microbrewery happen in the heart of the city. With what began in 2005 as three brothers home-brewing at the family residence, turned into so much more. Before they knew it, they were needing larger and more equipment. That’s when Lee decided to jump in. The art of being a designer craftsman has run in the family, generation after generation; especially in metalwork. So when the brothers needed a larger masher, Lee built one for them. This continued until 2009 when they had decided to establish Gilgamesh Brewing. With help from family and friends alike, Lee, Mike, Nick, and Matt have successfully built what is now called Gilgamesh- The Campus. The Campus is home to a new full-service and family-friendly restaurant pub with the beloved and much larger brewery attached. When you enter you will notice that the majority of the metal fabrication and woodwork that you see was handcrafted by the owners. The restaurant also keeps many products local. For example, you will only find locally distilled spirits and wine. Within the last several months Gilgamesh Brewing has begun their newest adventure- bottling. You can find 22oz bottles of Mamba, Oedupis IPA, Vader and Hopscotch at many of your local grocery stores and bottle shops.

TASTING WINES Coelho Winery 111 5th Street • Amity, Oregon 97101 • 503.835.9305 coelhowinery.com

2011 Coelho Winery Paciência “Coelho Estate Vineyard” Pinot Noir

The 2011 Paciência Pinot Noir comes out of the glass with a nose of eucalyptus and herbs coupled with dark red berry, blackberry and boysenberry. The front of the palate starts off with light cherry and pomegranate, transitioning into a mild herb mid-palate, and finishing with earthy notes. 2011 Coelho Winery Tradição Portuguese Red Blend

This traditional blend of Portuguese varietals represents the heart and soul of Coelho. This is a bright, ruby colored wine that permeates with dark cherry, ripe raspberry and sweet herb aromas. The bright fruit in the front palate mingles nicely with the herbs in the middle and the peppery spice on the finish gives a punch that matches very well with its balanced acid and tannin. TASTING WINES Cristom Vineyards 6905 Spring Valley Road NW • Salem, Oregon 97304 • 503.375.3068 cristomwines.com

2011 Cristom Vineyards Sommers Reserve Pinot Noir Willamette Valley

Sourced primarily from the four estate Pinot Noir vineyards, Sommers Reserve is crafted in the same style as the single-vineyard wines. It is an elegant combined expression of the Cristom estate Pinot Noir vineyards, with complexity added by small amounts of fruit from top sites in the Willamette Valley. Sommers Reserve was known as ‘Cristom Reserve’ until 2004, when Paul added ‘Sommers’ to honor his paternal grandmother, Jessie Sommers.

2011 Cristom Vineyards Louise Vineyard Pinot Noir Eola-Amity Hills

This 9.5 acre site is the oldest of the estate vineyards, which they began planting in 1993. It is planted at the high density of 2300 vines per acre. The volcanic soils are predominantly of the Ritner type. It is the lowest elevation hillside vineyard. Curiously, the parking lot block of Louise is often the first vineyard to be harvested at Cristom and the upper block of Louise is often harvested last because it lies in a sun shadow just below the woodland on their hillside.

2012 Cristom Vineyards Estate Viognier

Viognier was planted at Cristom in 1993—making it among—if not, the oldest Viognier plantings in the Willamette Valley. Fermented in a combination of neutral barrels and stainless steel barrels, this 4 acre vineyard produces a restrained style of Viognier that has varietal character but is more ‘racy’ than most domestic Viognier.

An ample acid thread ties the whole package together and provides excellent direction to successful ageing which will integrate tannins, soften structure and calmly weave oak and fruit.

2012 St. Innocent Winery Freedom Hill Chardonnay

The 2012 Freedom Hill Chardonnay has a detailed and focused nose of apples and pears with spice and ripe citrus notes. Fresh stone fruit flavors are balanced by bright acidity and layers of stoniness - both river stones and the “stone” of a peach. These flavors extend across the palate and the minerality broadens into the finish. The combination of layered fruit, length, and complex undercurrent of minerality makes it a good match for richer white meat dishes. Match with rich fishes, wild birds, risottos and cheeses. Drinkable at release, it will develop over 8 years.

2012 St. Innocent Winery Villages Cuvée Pinot Noir

The 2012 Villages Cuvée Pinot Noir reflects the signature of Oregon’s 2012 vintage: very full-flavored, texturally rich wines that have immediate appeal as well as the structure to age. The percentage of fruit from Vitae Springs Vineyard increased in 2012 giving it a broader signature of red fruits with a fresh, juicy acidity. It has a nose rich with red and dark fruit, spices, and dark flowers. It is layered in the mouth with sweet cherry and red berry flavors with pepper, spice, and dark floral notes. The Villages Cuvée will benefit from being opened and decanted for 1-2 hours. Bottled in September 2013, it is very approachable now and can be aged up to 6 years to gain complexity. Its freshness and depth of flavor make it a great match for a wide variety of medium-flavored preparations.

2013 St. Innocent Winery Oeil de Perdrix, Pinot Noir, Zenith Vineyard

The 2013 Oeil de Perdrix is straw colored with only the faintest hint of pink. Aromas of peach, apricot and plums are mixed with spring floral notes. Flavors of fresh, juicy peach and plum are balanced with just a touch of sweetness to balance its vibrant acidity. This is the perfect wine to pair with your summertime picnic in the park. Enjoy with potato salad, cold chicken, burgers, grilled fish or veggies.

TASTING WINES Trinity Vineyards 1031 Wahl Lane S • Salem, OR 97306 • 503. 371.6977 trinityvineyards.com

2007 Trinity Vineyards Pinot Noir

Elegant, yet youthfully fresh with vibrant notes of crushed cherry and cranberries on the nose. Similarly luscious red cherry flavors are punchy, with notes of raspberry and spice on the mid-palate and finish.

2012 Trinity Vineyards Viognier

A fruit-forward bouquet of fresh peach and juicy pear with secondary aromatics of night-blooming jasmine and gardenia immediately emerge in the glass. Well-balanced with a crisp acidity and minerality, this drier-style viognier bursts with flavors of tropical fruits, ending with a long pineapple finish. This wine is best paired with spicy Middle Eastern, Thai, or Indian entrees.

2013 Trinity Vineyards Pinot Gris

A delightfully aromatic nose of fresh pears and citrus fruits unfold into an elegant and balanced framework of bright acidity and minerality. The finish is clean and crisp.

2010 Willamette Valley Vineyards Elton Pinot Noir

One of Oregon’s top ten vineyards, Elton Vineyard is owned by Dick and Betty O’Brien. They planted the vineyard, beginning in 1983 on land inherited from Betty’s parents, Elton and Peggy Ingram, hence the name Elton Vineyard and the address Ingram Lane. This wine opens with rich aromas of blackberry, marionberry and cherry cola, followed by earthy notes of mushroom, forest floor and rose petal. Flavors mirror aromas leading with lively cherry, black fruit and cassis. Smooth tannins and bright acidity create a rich mouthfeel and well-rounded body that leads to the mouthwatering cherry finish. Peak drinkability is 2013-2016.

2010 Willamette Valley Vineyards Dijon Clone Chardonnay

This elegant and refreshing Dijon Clone Chardonnay shows rich, smooth aromas of lemongrass, honeysuckle and coconut cream with a hint of brown sugar. The balanced acidity is highlighted by flavors of butterscotch and caramel apple. A creamy mouthfeel is complimented by a clean and crisp pie crust finish that lingers on the palate, inviting another sip.

2012 Willamette Valley Vineyards Pinot Gris

This wine opens with a ripe aromatic profile of honeydew melon, juicy pear and a layer of intricate floral lemongrass. The palate has enticing flavors of sweet orange blossom and lemon zest. GUEST CHEFS

135 Liberty Street N. • Salem, Oregon amadeuscafeinc.com Diana Ramallo fell into the world of food quite by accident. A professional kitchen was not where she thought she would end up but it’s twenty years later and she is still enjoying being a chef. For Diana, food is a creative process but also an expression and offering of love. It is a way of using different ingredients creatively to produce something that tastes amazing but also makes the recipient come away with a feeling of having been nurtured. Diana has always had an intuitive sense about flavor profiles and the way in which they best come together and had them further honed by a classical culinary education. For the western world, a basis in French culinary techniques is the jumping off point for creative composition and while her menu at the Amadeus is considered eclectic, it employs much of what is good and true about French cuisine; fresh ingredients, locally sourced, cooked upon order. A la minute cooking (cooked upon order) is de riguer at Amadeus and while it may take a little longer the results in terms of freshness of flavor are well worth it.

GUEST CHEFS

2065 Madrona Ave. SE • Salem, Oregon gilgameshbrewing.com Chef Ashton Gentzler grew up in the Willamette Valley’s farm region surrounded by quality meats and produce. He learned to keep things simple and use fresh ingredients from the garden by cooking with his grandmother. His grandmother’s love of preserving, sausage making and “Farm to Fork” style food stuck with him from an early age. This early experience in the kitchen inspired him to attend the International Culinary School in Seattle, Washington. He has worked and learned from accomplished chefs in Seattle, including Le Pichet and Restaurant Zoe. He learned many classical and new school cooking techniques during this time. Ashton returned to the Willamette Valley and his family farm and began working at The Campus at Gilgamesh Brewing. Working with Gilgamesh Brewing has given him the opportunity to showcase his love of local ingredients. Creating simple, yet fun food and this time- beer is in the mix. Gilgamesh Brewing is determined to get their hands on some of the best local ingredients, as well as using family-run businesses. This means local bakers, meats, farms and purveyors are found all over their menu. With a love of beer and food, returning to the Willamette Valley was Chef Ashton’s best idea yet.

A LETTER FROM OUR VENUE SPONSOR

Welcome to Zenith Vineyard! Who would have believed seven years ago that the Uncorked Wine Auction at Zenith Vineyard would have developed into Salem’s premier gala event? Who would have believed that Salem would step up so generously and embrace the mission of Family Building Blocks? You believed, and you did it. We can all be so proud of what we’ve created together in support of our community and families in our neighborhoods and beyond. Zenith Vineyard is all about sustainability. Our vineyard is certified by LIVE as sustainable. Set in human terms, sustainability perhaps starts and ends with family. We see Family Building Blocks’ work as vital to sustaining our neighborhoods, our schools, and the fabric of the community. Just as we lovingly tend the vineyard, hoping for a blessed harvest, you all are the vinedressers of our community – making an investment now, applying support when needed most. The payoff will be in the strength of the families we support now, continuing ten and twenty years hence. The fruit of that investment will surely be sweet. Join us in celebrating tonight! Let us together build a successful legacy in support of Family Building Blocks and our community. And we will enjoy some amazing wine and food as well!

6 Our 2014 Commemorative Painting by Jon Jay Cruson Artist Jon Jay Cruson was raised in the Sacramento Valley of California in a small agricultural community- an inspiring landscape for a burgeoning artist. He moved to Oregon to attend school, graduating from the University of Oregon with a Master in Fine Arts Degree. This led to a teaching career at his alma mater, as well as Oregon State University and Treasure Valley Community College. Jon retired from teaching to pursue painting and printmaking full time, becoming the renowned artist we recognize today. His paintings grace the Ford Collection and Chrysler Collection and as far as the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and private collectors in Italy and Japan. In Salem, you can find his work at the Mary Lou Zeek Gallery. This is your opportunity to add an internationally known artist’s piece to your own personal collection with Landscape #2. Our commemorative painting reflects Cruson’s love of the landscape. His use of acrylic in a bold and direct manner is appealing yet comfortable to the eye. He arouses your sense of remembrance. With the use of flat color juxtaposed to pattern and textures, he created a superlative dynamic. Framed size is 41 ½” W by 31 ½”H.

12 Let ‘er Buck at the Pendleton Round Up Pack your Stetson and get ready to “Let ‘er Buck” at the world famous Pendleton Round-Up on September 11-14, 2014. This trip for four is packed with activities sure to please anyone’s inner cowboy. Rodeo tickets, a BBQ supper, parades, pageants and a historic Wild West show will keep you hopping and happy. On Thursday, September 11th settle into camp, otherwise known as the Oxford Suites. Your accommodations include two king rooms for Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. A bottle of Pendleton Whisky will be stashed in each room, something to whet your whistle during your stay. You will also find western necklaces created by Jeni Mitchell for the cowgirls to accessorize their western wear. A welcome wagon hosted by Sue and Jerry Moore will greet you and your party on Thursday night at the RV Park. The Moores are veteran cowhands at the Round-Up and will cook a Wrangler’s BBQ and provide you with all the ‘must do’ activities available during the weekend. Friday enjoy four tickets to the main attraction, the Pendleton Round-Up Rodeo. Your prime seats above the bucking chutes are nearly impossible for just any cowboy or cowgirl to wrangle up. Before you head to the rodeo, we recommend the 10:00 am Westward Ho! Parade, which depicts The Oregon Trail with covered wagons, stage coaches, oxen and mule teams. No motorized vehicles allowed in this parade! We’ve included 4 tickets to see Happy Canyon on Saturday evening. This outdoor pageant and Wild West Show was written in 1908 and is still performed today. Learn all about the American West, Native American culture and the arrival of Lewis and Clark. Happy Canyon concludes with a reenactment of a frontier town’s rollicking main street mishaps. Cowboy Up for an unforgettable weekend at the Pendleton Round Up!

The diptych, composed of two canvases, can be hung together or separately. You will be consulted as John continues through the process of composing and painting your new masterpiece. Your artistic apprenticeship will be celebrated in the Van Dreal’s studio with servings of fine Oregon wines and Willamette Valley Cheese as you assist John with the final brush strokes of the painting.
