A LETTER FROM FAMILY BUILDING BLOCKS

Welcome to our first annual Uncorked! Wine Auction. We appreciate your being one of the “founders” of this signature event. Thanks to our generous sponsors, all of the donations made will go to support our mission of “keeping children safe and families together.” It is this immediate connection to highrisk children and low-income families that gives everything we do a reason and a purpose. Our success is dependent on a long list of community volunteers as well as the individuals and businesses that purchase event tickets and offer their bids to help make a difference in so many lives. Thank you for caring about children and families. Cheers!

WINERIES

St. Innocent Winery was founded in May 1988 by Mark Vlossak, the current winemaker and president, and eight investors. Ten tons of grapes were crushed the first fall, producing 396 cases of still and 176 cases of sparkling wine. Production increased to our full capacity of 6,800 cases in 2004. The winery is located in Salem, Oregon, at the southeast corner of the Eola Hills, in the mid-Willamette Valley. St. Innocent produces small lot, handmade wines: seven single vineyard Pinot Noirs and a blended Pinot Noir called the Villages CuvĂŠe, two Chardonnay from Dijon clone plantings, two Pinot Gris, and a Pinot Blanc. The winery also works with eight different growers, leasing specific blocks of vineyard to produce terroir-specific wines. Unique sites produce grapes that have a concentration of flavor reflective of the site-based terroir. Maintaining a close working relationship with its growers allows a collaborative fine-tuning of viticultural techniques in order to focus these flavors and aromas in the wines. The philosophy behind the winemaking at St. Innocent is that the function of wine is to complement and extend the pleasure of a meal. The characteristics of a wine should enhance different food and flavor combinations - this interaction amplifies the pleasure of a meal. To this end, St. Innocent wines tend toward higher acid levels, and more diverse and balanced flavors.

WINERIES

Founder Jim Bernau purchased the Estate site in 1983 and cleared away the old pioneer plum orchard hidden in scotch broom and blackberry vines. He planted Pinot Noir (Pommard and Wadenswil clones), Chardonnay (Dijon and Espiguette) and Pinot Gris. In 1989 Jim was ready to build his dream—a world class winery in the Willamette Valley—and make cool-climate varietals, especially Pinot Noir, in sufficient quantities to be served and sold in the best restaurants and bottle shops in the world. A combination of determination and extraordinary people has brought Willamette Valley Vineyards from an idea to one of the region’s leading wineries, earning the title “One of America’s Great Pinot Noir Producers,” from Wine Enthusiast Magazine. Our approach is to grow, by hand, the highest quality fruit using careful canopy management, and to achieve wines that are truly expressive of the varietal and the place where they are grown. Our stylistic emphasis is on pure varietal fruit characters, with attention to depth, richness of mouthfeel, and balance. The wines are truly a collaborative effort of the entire vineyard and winemaking staff.

WINERIES

Bethel Heights Vineyard is a family-owned and operated winery located in the historic Eola Hills northwest of Salem. Two families established the vineyard in 1977 and released their first wines in 1984. Planted between 1977 and 1979, Bethel Heights was one of the first vineyards in the Eola Hills, a chain of hills in the center of Oregon’s Willamette Valley. Terry Casteel and Marilyn Webb are half of the original team, and Ted Casteel and Pat Dudley are the other half. Pat’s sister, Barbara Dudley, also is a partner and serves as chairperson of the Board of Directors. Ted Casteel manages the vineyards associated with Bethel Heights; Terry is winemaker; Pat is Marketing Director and President; and Marilyn is CFO and assists with marketing. The winery produces 13,000 cases of premium wine annually, specializing in Pinot Noir, Pinot Gris, Chardonnay and Pinot Blanc. Over the past several years Bethel Heights has expanded to include second generation leadership and ownership, bringing youthful energy, talent and passion into the blend. The family is known for generous service to the Oregon wine industry over the years, and for leadership in building sustainability and stewardship of the land into all aspects of growing grapes and making fine wine.

WINERIES

Cristom’s founder and owner, Paul Gerrie, used his skills as an engineer and avid researcher to pursue his passion for wine. On his travels to France, he was introduced to the traditional growing practices of the Burgundy region. He learned that soil and site were key in developing the complexity of the fruit. After a 1991 visit to the International Pinot Noir Celebration in Oregon, Paul decided the time was right to leave the East Coast and bring his family and his passion for great Pinot Noir to Oregon’s burgeoning wine country. But their journey wasn’t complete without a winemaker who shared Paul’s vision of “letting the land make the wines.” Enter Steve Doerner (pictured above) who, after a quarter century of experience, still believes the winemaker’s job is to “optimize what nature — the vineyard — provides.” In addition to his reputation as a master winemaker with “keen intuition” (possibly from his French heritage), Steve is a biochemist who had been making wine in California. And so with a passion that only wine enthusiasts embrace and a precision that can only come from a chemist and an engineer, the two set out to cultivate their vision, which today, can be seen in the seven distinct vineyards on Cristom’s 65 acres.

WINERIES

Evesham Wood Vineyard takes its name from England’s picturesque Vale of Evesham. Our small, subterranean winery produces four varieties in its 4,500-case annual production, from grapes grown on our 12-acre estate vineyard, “Le Puits Sec”, and other nearby vineyards, predominantly in the Eola Hills west of Salem. All wines bearing the “Le Puits Sec” designation are produced from certified organically grown fruit. Our guiding philosophy calls for traditional techniques with little or no intervention. Likewise, we produce wines exclusively from non-irrigated vineyards, while bottling all our Pinot Noir and vineyard-designated Chardonnays without filtration. This approach allows the wines to best express the unique attributes of their vineyard origins, and, along with proprietary yeast strains, gives Evesham Wood wines their distinctive character.

13

WINERIES

Witness Tree Vineyard is named for an ancient oak tree, which towers over our 100acre estate. Used as a surveyor’s landmark in 1854, the tree bears “witness” to the Northwest corner of donation land claim No. 51. Witness Tree Vineyard is steadfastly committed to being an “estate”, for as winegrowers we believe that only by tending our own vines can we achieve the highest quality to produce the finest wines. We only use grapes grown on our 52 acres of planted vine, grapes that deliver the unique expressions of each individual vineyard block. Low yields in the vineyard and minimal handling in the winery allow us to create wines of depth, elegance, concentration, and character. The vineyard is farmed using sustainable agricultural practices and is certified by the LIVE (Low Impact Viticulture & Enology) and Salmon Safe organizations. Witness Tree Vineyard’s primary focus is premium Pinot Noir, but we also produce limited quantities of estate-grown Chardonnay, Viognier, Pinot Blanc, and Dolcetto. Steven Westby is our Winemaker and Vineyard Manager. Working the vineyard at Witness Tree for the last eleven vintages has given Steven an intimate knowledge and appreciation for the varied microclimates in our vineyard. His familiarity with the nuances of each separate lot of fruit grown here on the estate qualifies him as one of Oregon’s most capable Winemakers.

WINERIES

Zerba Cellars is a family-owned, Oregon winery located in the heart of the Walla Walla Valley. We own three estate vineyards in three of the appellation’s most exciting viticultural zones. We are fortunate to work with a wide range of grape varieties and vineyard sources. Each vineyard and grape variety has a unique character that contributes to the quality, complexity and balance of our individual wines. Each vineyard and grape variety is harvested separately and hand-crafted in isolation. We conduct rigorous blending trials that combine discipline and creativity to produce wines that are greater than the sum of their parts.

Bethel Heights 2006 Pinot Noir, Eola-Amity Hills Cuvee

This blended wine celebrates the AVA (American Viticultural Area) we live in, the EolaAmity Hills. It is a blend of grapes from several properties in the Eola-Amity Hills, including Seven Springs Vineyard, Elton Vineyard, Jessie James Vineyard, Lewman Vineyard, and Bethel Heights. This carefully crafted blend is medium-bodied, and a forwardly fruit driven wine. Aged 10 months in French oak, 35% new, initial aromas of clove and anise give way to dusty raspberry, oak spice and plum as the wine opens in the glass. 1625 cases produced.

Bethel Heights 2006 Pinot Gris

“The bottling from Bethel Heights is peachy, spicy and rich, but also perfectly balanced.” (Food and Wine) Fruit from several vineyards in the Willamette Valley provides bright, crisp acidity and purity of fruit in this blended wine. Fruit from the warmer climates of the Rogue Valley adds lush floral qualities. The wine was fermented cold in stainless steel and bottled with just a touch of residual sugar. 2974 cases produced.

Cristom Vineyards 6905 Spring Valley Road NW • Salem, Oregon 97304 • 503.375.3068 www.cristomwines.com

2006 Mt Jefferson Cuvee Pinot Noir, Willamette Valley

The fruit sources for this Pinot Noir are Canary Hill, Seven Springs and Feltz Vineyard. The vinter is well known for his ability to blend, as in cuvee, and this wine has legions of fans in many countries and many states. It’s made with a large percentage of whole clusters and all native yeasts, as are all Cristom wines. Mt Jefferson, in the Cascade Range, is visible from the Cristom Vineyards’ tasting room.

2006 Estate Pinot Gris, Willamette Valley

This Pinot Gris is a pale-straw color. It has the aroma of Asian pears, white flowers and green apples along with some mineral notes. On the palate it shows a ripeness, viscosity and concentration that give the impression of fruitiness in a decidedly dry wine. This dry style will make it an excellent accompaniment to a variety of dishes.

TASTING WINES Evesham Wood Vineyard 3795 Wallace Road NW • Salem, Oregon 97304 • 503.371.8478 www.eveshamwood.com

2006 Pinot Noir “La Grive Bleue” (the blue thrush)

This cuvée is 100% from our estate (Le Puits Sec) vineyard. The fruit is sourced from a seven-year old planting of Dijon clones 114 and 777 fruit in the Northeast section of our vineyard, where the soil type is predominantly alluvial versus the basalt soils further upslope. The wine exhibits a silky texture and finesse typical for our site. The flavor profile tends more toward strawberry and plums with nuances of dried flower and white pepper. Bottling took place in January ‘08 after 15 months in 10% new French oak (unfined & unfiltered). The name derives from our love of (and provision for) the bluebirds that nest in boxes throughout our vineyard. made with certified organically-grown grapes.

2006 Blanc du Puits Sec

This year’s bottling is a blend of 80% Pinot Gris, 15% Gewurztraminer, and 5% Gruener veltliner. The spicy muscat tones of Gewurztraminer balance nicely with the rich viscosity of ripe nutty Pinot Gris, while the gruener adds a but of lemony zest. In order to preserve the wine’s bright acidity, it was not allowed to complete the malo-lactic fermentation. 370 cases produced. made with certified organically-grown grapes.

2005 Pinot Noir, Shea Vineyard

Shea Vineyard is located in the Yamhill foothills, 35 miles southwest of Portland, Oregon. The Pinot Noir was planted in 1990 on a hillside of shallow Willakenzie soil. This Shea is a dark ruby color. Its nose is layered with dark fruits, orange peel, and dark flowers with spices underneath. The initial flavors are rich with red and black raspberries, dried flowers and spice. With air, the ‘05 Shea reveals substantial layers, depth and density. Texturally, ripe tannins coat your tongue with hints of oak and fresh acidity that carries the fruit layers into the finish.

2006 Chardonnay, Freedom Hill Vineyard

Freedom Hill Vineyard is located in the foothills of the coast range 10 miles southwest of Salem, Oregon. Planted in 1982 on well drained silty clay loam, the Chardonnay vines were grafted to Dijon clone 76 in 1998. 2006 was a vintage that produced wines with an added dimension of concentration. Freedom Hill Chardonnay has mineral aromas that are reminiscent of granite and marble. Intermixed are aromas of melon and pear. Richly textured, emphasizing complex flavors in the mid-palate and finish.

Willamette Valley Vineyards 2006 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir

The 2006 Estate Vineyard Pinot Noir is an elegant wine that truly expresses the terroir of the red, volcanic earth where it was grown. Aromas of sweet wild rose, red and black fruits, clove and earth are complemented by flavors of black cherry, cassis, cocoa, vanilla and cinnamon. A medium-full bodied wine with a voluptuous mid-palate and big round tannins in balance with the crisp acidity. The spicy cinnamon and black pepper finish lingers into the next sip. Appealing now but will further reward those who cellar this wine. Peak drinkability is between 2008-2012.

Willamette Valley Vineyards 2007 Pinot Gris

Bright, fruity, crisp style. Pretty aromas of fresh young pear, starfruit, grapefruit, honeydew and flower. Bold and crisp mouthfeel with generous flavors of pear, mineral, tangerine and spice, interwoven with well-balanced acidity. The Pinot Blanc, picked very ripe, adds emollient mouthfeel, and contributes to the Alsatian style. While the Muscat adds flowery sweetness, the barrel fermented portions of the Pinot Gris add a kiss of toast and richness. Peak drinkability will be between now and 2009.

2006 Witness Tree Vineyard Estate Viognier

The fruit for this bottling was grown in a two and a half-acre block of vines that was grafted into our vineyard in 2001. Wines made from Viognier have long been prized for their effusively floral nose and spicy, exotic fruit character. This wine offers a nose full of apricot and orange blossom aromas, and an explosion of flavors suggestive of peaches and spice fill the mouth.

2006 Witness Tree Vineyard Estate Pinot Noir

This wine is really a “snapshot” of our entire vineyard – which ultimately reflects the blending of the flavors and textures produced by the varying soil types, vine ages, clonalselections and sun-exposures from our 52-acre vineyard. The wine itself is packed with succulent, forward black fruits with just the slightest hint of vanilla and spice. And from the warm, dry 2006 growing season comes incredibly ripe, big-fruited “sassy” flavors. This is definitely the style of Oregon Pinot Noir that will make you go “WOW”!

2005 Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2005 Walla Walla Valley Cabernet Sauvignon is our second Cab showcasing Winesap Road Vineyard and neighboring vineyards located in the heart of a dense, rocky floodplain on the Walla Walla River. Our first Cab showcasing fruit from “the rocks“ won first place out of 128 wines in the largest judging of Northwest Cabernet Sauvignon by one panel of judges! (Wine Press NW, Spring 2006) Our 2005 Cab is a focused, food-friendly wine with remarkable acidity, great balance and a long, lingering finish.

2005 Columbia Valley Merlot

In many wine regions, Merlot is over-ripe and jammy. Winemakers must use Cab and other grape varieties to give it backbone. Our Merlot is the opposite. It is intense with incredible tannic structure, and we use Cab to soften it. We like to think of it as Merlot for Cab lovers. Our 2005 Columbia Valley Merlot is a rich, food-friendly wine with complex black cherry, currant, leather and balanced oak aromas. This wine has black cherry, plum and currant flavors with hints of chocolate on the finish. Great mouthfeel, with balanced tannins and acidity, and concentrated fruit combine to make this a very good wine.

2005 “Wild Z” Columbia Valley Red Table Wine

Our red table wine showcases the best varieties from our estate vineyards. The labels are in jest, but these wines are no laughing matter. Only the highest quality grapes go into these blends, and we work hard to make sure they are balanced, food-friendly wines that deliver value. Our 2005, Wild “Z” opens with rich aromas of currant, plums and black cherries with hints of smoke and spice. Black cherry, plum and even strawberry flavors linger on the long finish. Balanced acidity and smooth tannins make this a versatile, food-friendly wine.

DINNER

Portland, Oregon

J. Steven Brockman, Executive Chef A Nebraska native, I served in the U.S. Navy from 1981 to 1985 as a rescue swimmer. After circling the globe, I found I needed to fulfill a high school curiosity inspired by my grandmother. I moved to the East coast and enrolled in the Culinary School of Washington, D.C. While in the capital, I launched my culinary career through celebrity dinners, charity fundraisers and local professional cuisine venue associations in the company of accomplished and flowers aspiring chefs. decor Next I headed south to Powhatan Plantation Resort in historic Williamsburg, Virginia, then west to California. A chef ’s paradise, the San Francisco Bay area yielded the Claremont Resort & Spa, Stars of Palo Alto with Jeremiah Tower, and the Mark Hopkins Intercontinental. While based in Santa Fe, I enjoyed the Legal Tender - an authentic, Old West saloon and prestigious Rancho Encantado Resort. I instructed at the Santa Fe School of Cooking and was sponsored in January of 2000 to cook for the James Beard House in New York City. Completed my Baking & Pastry Arts degree from Johnson & Wales University in 2007. I have since been in the corporate world of Sodexho in both Santa Fe and at the Mystic Seaport Museum in Mystic, Connecticut, now making my home in the beautiful Pacific Northwest with Vibrant Table Catering. In my kitchen, I strive to use the freshest ingredients in their prime. I prefer to use local organic food whenever possible. There’s not a great deal in my freezer and you can count the number of cans in my pantry. With creative menu planning, there is very little wasted, food cost can be kept low and the results are glorious.

Some trip features or amenities may have to be paid by the buyers at the time of use. Such expenditures will not be reimbursed unless specifically listed in the auction item description as qualified for reimbursement by the Auction. 6. SILENT AUCTION 140. 2001 Harlan Estate, Napa Valley This wine is valued in the $950 range by Vinfolio and received a rare 100point rating from Robert Parker, Jr. • A 750ml bottle of Harlan Estate’s wonderous 2001 vintage “Rivaling the 1994 and 1997, the 2001 Harlan Estate is another perfect wine for my palate. Tasted on four separate occasions, this offering, which spent 28 months in oak before being bottled unfined and unfiltered, is an extraordinary effort that comes across as a hypothetical blend of Mouton-Rothschild, La Mission-Haut-Brion, and Montrose. A synthesis in style between the more elegant, delineated, structured 1994, and the port-like, over-the-top, viscous 1997, this extraordinary 2001 was the wine of my trip, even though I had already had it from bottle several months earlier. An inky/purple color is accompanied by a stupendous bouquet of lead pencil shavings interwoven with coffee, new saddle leather, melted licorice, cedarwood, black currant liqueur, and violets. Explosive richness, a marvelous, full-bodied texture, and fabulous purity, concentration, complexity, and nobleness are the stuff of legends. 100 points.” - Robert M. Parker, Jr./The Wine Advocate Contributed by: Doug Goe

Raise your Paddle! Keeping Children Safe One Bus at a Time

For Family Building Blocks to fulfill its mission of “keeping children safe and families together,” it is imperative that enrolled infants, toddlers and preschoolers attend our therapeutic classes each week. Most of the high-risk families that we serve cannot provide their own transportation. So, to be successful, we must transport children each morning in small yellow buses equipped with specialized car seats. These buses provide much, much more than just a way for children to get to class. Many of the families whom we serve live in isolation with no phone or car. The regular visit that the bus makes to their homes may be one of the only contacts that the parents have with the community. The teacher who knocks on the front door to pick up a child serves as a critical piece of that family’s safety and support network. Sometimes, that regular contact can provide vital information needed to make a crucial difference for a family in need. Our studies show that attendance in our therapeutic classes really does make a difference. Last year, 98% of the children enrolled in our program were able to continue living safely with their families, thus avoiding the trauma and heartbreak of being removed and placed in foster care. This outcome is remarkable considering the overwhelming challenges facing our clients. This lot is the very heart of the auction: to help high-risk children and families in our community. With your collaborative support, we can “keep those wheels rolling” and make a difference for another bus load of children!

What Legends Are Made Of

These sirens whisper to you from the dusty shelves of your local wine shop, chanting your name, enticing you to examine their classic labels depicting their fancy Chateaux. They speak of a bygone era, memories of seasons past captured within the green-black confines of the bottle, waiting to spill their secrets to you – only you. Many an intrepid wine collector has succumbed to the sirens’ call, reached deep into their pockets just to slip the cork from the slender neck and watch as the sinuous brick red flows smoothly into the fine cut crystal glass, catching the light, winking. These lucky few lived to tell the tale of the beguiling Chateau Margaux or the silkily seductive Chateau Haut Brion. Into whose ears will the next story tumble forth? Wine should come from a beautiful place. Everything we do, we strive to do in harmony with the land, keeping the vineyard pristine, the soils healthy and the farm life rich. Sustainability speaks to the vision we have of our job as winegrowers. The fruit from outstanding wines can only come from beautiful origins. It is our commitment to respect the land, the vineyard, and the wines that come from our site as things of great beauty, to be carefully and lovingly tended. We are caretakers only. We are charged with delivering this parcel of land to the next generation with healthy soils, intact biology and a vineyard that has a brighter future ahead than even its greatness of the past. Everything we do, we try to do with the attitude of “we’re doing this forever, don’t cut corners, don’t make short-run decisions.” 2006 – The First Vintage from Zenith Vineyard! - We are thrilled to announce the release of our 2006 Pinot Noirs and Tempranillo - the first-ever vintage under the Zenith Vineyard brand. These are also the first vineyard-designated wines from our site since the 1998 St. Innocent O’Connor Pinot Noir. Mark Vlossak, winemaker of St. Innocent and our partner in the vineyard, made the wines with his usual high standards and elegance. Zenith Vineyard made two Pinot Noirs and a Tempranillo in 2006. Our 2006 Barrel Select Pinot Noir, (180 cases) is $40 per bottle; the 2006 Estate Pinot Noir, 280 cases produced, is $25 and the 2006 Estate Tempranillo, only 50 cases produced, is $25. Please Enjoy!
