FROM PATRICE Those of you who know Nita Kennedy know she’s a person who makes things happen! How fortunate we were to have her serve as our Board Chair for the past two years. Nita is passionate about our “Keeping Children Safe and Families Together,” and has never missed an opportunity to support Family Building Blocks. She is both a Dream Builder and Stepping Stone Sustainer. She also served on our Early Head Start Self-Assessment Committee, sponsored countless events through COUNTRY Financial, brought gifts to EVERY Board meeting, and always made us smile. Her wisdom and practical guidance has served us well for two incredible years. Thank you, Nita! Our incoming Board Chair is the visionary Rich Schultz, of Cherry City Metals. Rich has served on our Board for over six years, starting out as the representative from our Young Leaders Council. Rich brings a unique perspective to this position, having years of experience working in a family business. The entire Schultz Family are long-term supporters of the success of children and families in our community. We look forward to the next two years, continuing to build upon this legacy. Thank you to both Nita and Rich for stepping up to this important leadership position for Family Building Blocks, and to our entire Board for their dedication to the prevention of child abuse and neglect in our community.

FEATURED STORY MEET KIRI: YEAR-END GIVING
“Are you going to feed me?” “That was one of the most heart-wrenching questions Kiri asked me when she was four years old. And that question completely broke my heart. My husband, Bob and I, were in the process of adopting Kiri. We were not able to have children of our own, and we opened up our hearts to this little girl. Her mother lost her battle with an addiction and had passed away. The first three years of any child’s life are critical to lifelong success. Unfortunately, Kiri’s first three years were filled with insecurity and tragic experiences. Kiri’s mom was a single parent. Her addiction caused many struggles for her and for her children. Kiri was once found on the side of the road in her diaper. Because of these experiences Kiri had Meet Kiri many anxieties and fears to overcome. We count our blessings that when Kiri’s grandma saw her daughter overwhelmed as a parent, they voluntarily partnered with Family Building Blocks. Kiri’s grandma bravely said, ‘We need help.’ And Family Building Blocks responded.”

HIGHLIGHTS HOLIDAY WISH: ONLY A FORK
Herman, age four, was in our Therapeutic Classroom engaging in a sweet conversation with volunteer, Marty Thomson (pictured). Sitting down in our classroom, playing with Play-Doh, Marty asked Herman, “What do you want for Christmas this year?” Herman looked at Ms. Marty, and said, “I would really like a fork.” “A fork?” Marty asked, “Why would you like a fork?” Herman was busy playing with his Play-Doh and replied, “Because when we sit down to eat I always have to share my fork with my brother and I would like to have my own fork so I can eat my food without having to wait. That’s all I really want.” Marty was moved to tears by Herman’s response. She said, “Well, Herman, I hope you get a fork for Christmas.” As you can imagine, Marty quickly decided she would provide Herman and his family with an entire eight-piece set of utensils that holiday season. While heartbreaking to read, this story is a reality for several of the families partnering with Family Building Blocks. Marty Thomson has been a faithful volunteer in our Therapeutic Classroom for 16 years. Marty and our teachers share this story with you because we know you care about children in our community. We know you care enough to want to help. YOU CAN HELP provide basic needs for children in our program this holiday season by purchasing an educational book, toy, warm jacket, or a gift card for a holiday meal. When Herman and his friend John were graduating from our program, they were asked if they would like to say something to the class. John responded, “I am just going to miss you all. I am going to miss playing with you and playing in the classroom.” Herman went next. He sat down and looked at everyone and said, “I just want to say thank you.” There is still time to participate in our annual Hope for the Holidays giving program! Can you help us care for 40 children and 150 parents? If you can provide books, educational toys, coats, gift cards, and more, please donate online at familybuildingblocks.org/donate or contact Esmeralda Chan Tuyub at echantuyub@familybuildingblocks.org.

THANK YOU DREAM BUILDERS LUNCHEON SPONSORS! We enjoyed welcoming a capacity crowd at our Dream Builders Luncheon on October 18. We are very grateful to our sponsors and all of our table captains and volunteers, for making this event a success. Lunch attendees saw a powerful example of this transformation of lives by meeting a young child, Noah, and his family. Noah’s mother, Elizabeth (pictured with Josiah and Noah), survived a childhood she wishes she could forget – filled with violence, abuse and neglect. By saying “yes” to partnering with Family Building Blocks at the hospital, Elizabeth and her husband Josiah have learned how to support their young children with positive parenting.
