Online Edition of Fa mily Life Guide Life has changed rather a lot since March and I’m always inspired and in awe of the fabulous local businesses, who make up a very important part of our community, by the way they have adapted and changed to outside influences. COVID has made a huge impact on both family life and the way businesses operate. In this special online edition you will discover what businesses have done to adapt to the Government guidelines by reading their Spotlights to keep your family entertained, active and safe.

To all those mums and dads who are either jointingly, or single handedly, home schooling as well as trying to work, run the house, source food and keep some level of normality can I just say - you are all hero’s, we choose to home school or send our children to school for a reason. Workers have been expected to home school whilst trying to work which is extremely hard, so for all of you that are juggling home/work/education you are AWESOME. Win Family Tickets to Bocketts Farm Park! Please see page 3 and enter to win tickets to the award winning Bocketts Farm Park. Final check the website or Facebook for updates in this ever changing climate. Keep safe this summer and wash those hands!

spotlight on bocketts farm park Tell us about Bocketts Farm Park and how long it’s been running for.

Bocketts Farm Park is a working family farm run by the Gowing family who opened it in May 1992. In its 28th year, the farm park now welcomes over 250,000 visitors each year and employs over 200 staff. Bocketts Farm is still very much a working sheep farm and has over 500 ewes. Lambing is a big highlight of the year with more than 600 lambs expected each Spring. In addition to this, a programme of seasonal events takes place all year round with popular events running during both Halloween and Christmas. With acres of outdoor play, a huge indoor play barn, daily farm activities like Pony Rides, Small Animal Encounters and Pig Racing, you can always be sure of a great family fun day out. How has Bocketts Farm Park adapted due to COVID19?

A lot of careful planning and preparation was required to allow us to re-open Bocketts Farm in a responsible and safe way. As we all get used to a slightly different way of living at the moment, a visit to Bocketts Farm will certainly feel a little different but we believe our visitors can still enjoy a great day despite the changes in place. One of the biggest changes made is the visitor capacity limit which has been much reduced. Advance tickets must now to bought online to ensure the numbers can be managed safely. Once at the farm, you’ll notice additional signage in place reminding visitors to distance themselves from others. Extra sanitiser points have also been set up on top of the large number of handwashing areas already in place. Some areas and activities like the Indoor Play, Pony and Tractor Rides will remain closed for now but there is still huge amounts to explore with acres of space outside including all the outdoor play and hundreds of animals to meet and feed. Finally how can people get in touch with Bocketts Farm Park?

Please visit www.bockettsfarm.co.uk for more information. We can be contacted via email: office@bockettsfarm.co.uk or Tel: 01372 363764. For all the latest news straight from the farm, don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and Instagram! spotlight on weybridge salsa Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. Weybridge Salsa has been created by us, two friends with over 15 years dance experience each, as we truly believe in the benefits it brings both to the body and soul. We are committed to create and nurture a salsa community, where leaders and followers are taught properly and in a professional way, without losing though the warmth and fun that this Latin dance brings to the spirit. Both coming from two different European countries we compliment each other with ideas & inspirations when it comes to the way dance schools are run. What do you love about running your business? We love the social aspect of the role of a teacher and the satisfaction of seeing our students of all ages progress and become confident on the dance floor. Having both worked in corporate environments for many years, we appreciated the personal approach we can give to each and every single person that starts their adventure with us. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? We have set up online courses to ensure that our students have a chance to practice and foremost see each other on a weekly basis, which gives a bit of normality to our weekly routines. Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. We are both mothers (one of 2 girls and the other of 3 boys) who are passionate about healthy living and dance. Outside of work, which is a big part of our lives, we each enjoy the busy lives with our families, going to the beach and all kinds of sports. Finally how can people get in touch with you? We would love to hear from you! spotlight on david’s cards Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. I have been selling greeting cards for a number of years firstly with Phoenix Trading and now with Flamingo Paperie. I really like both the quality of the cards and such a wide range. I was looking to do something part time to work around a full time job at the time. The business is really flexible. What do you love about running your business? I like the flexibility and I love the cards. We have recently added some craft items for our more creative customers. I have met some really lovely people over the years. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? I have been working a lot more on line with Facebook and also doing Zoom parties as well. Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business While supporting my local hospice at a classic car event at Brooklands a number of years ago when I had packed the car up and was ready to go home I tried to start the car up but unfortunately the battery was flat. I therefore started to panic it took me a while to calm down and managed to phone for help. Phew. Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. My name is David Rainford I do enjoy swimming and horse riding but have had to put both on hold mainly to the situation with Covid19 but I’ve also put on a little weight at the moment so I will be pleased to get back to WW (formally Weight Watchers). I am also a clerk at two WW meetings one on Goldsworth Park and also at Chobham. Finally how can people get in touch with you? Appeal from Walton Charity due to COVID

GUIDE

COVID-19 Matched Fund Doubles the Difference A local charity is asking for help to provide a lifeline for families across Elmbridge. Walton Charity has launched the Walton Charity COVID-19 Response Fund to support families most affected by the coronavirus crisis. The difference in this charity appeal is that Walton Charity will match donations, £1 for £1, up to £100,000, so a donation of £1 will be worth £2.25 with Gift Aid. This doubles the help available to support the most vulnerable local people. The fund will support a huge range of issues arising from the pandemic, from providing emergency food vouchers for those struggling to feed their children; providing equipment for home learning, to counselling/mental health support for young people. It will also provide funding to local organisations to ensure vital services for children and young people can continue during the crisis and beyond. The charity has a long history of supporting local families and groups through their Individual and Community Grants and, since March, has awarded more than £25,000 in emergency grants. They have a strong track record of being able to ensure that the support reaches those in need quickly. Following a recent donation of food vouchers, a local school shared this quote from a very grateful mum “Today I received £150 of Tesco vouchers and I’m yet to stop the grateful tears from falling. I honestly don’t know what I would have done if it wasn’t for amazing people like yourselves working tirelessly to help families like mine. From the bottom of my heart, thank you so much!” With most children still off school, they are particularly keen to support disadvantaged pupils to access learning from home, so they don’t fall behind. Just this week, thanks to matched funding from a local company, the charity will donate 10 new laptops to local primary schools, Walton Oak and Bell Farm, to support families with home learning. With school closures accelerating the education gap by a reported 36%, more help of this kind is needed urgently. Walton Charity Chief Executive, Jackie Lodge, hopes the local community will continue the kindness and support they have shown over the past few months: “The community response to the crisis has been incredible. Together, we have re-stocked foodbanks, organised shopping for friends, collected medicines for neighbours, and clapped for our carers. Now we must act to make sure all families affected by the crisis have a lifeline within reach.” If you would like to make a difference in your local community, please support the appeal:

GUIDE

spotlight on all sorts of fun Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. I had always wanted to be a Wedding D.J., so i started in 1990 . I then tried kids disco parties and finally dressed up as a clown. Taught myself some tricks and balloons and never looked back. What do you love about running your business? Getting to meet so many different people, plus kids always say the funniest things How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? I opted to work on the frontline at Sainsbury’s to help out. I am now back to doing REAL LIVE parties, so if you need a small party give me a call. Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business The funniest thing that has happened was on the way to work, a lady driver was in a rush and kept trying to pass me. As she did she leaned out of her car and shouted. What are you some kind of a Clown. I leant out in full clown make up and said YES. Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. Who am I ? Well i am a father of 5 kids, i work with kids and i am a big Kid. As to relaxing i go swimming or as i call it Adults only time and i am a big film buff. Finally how can people get in touch with you? spotlight on koala kids parties Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. Hi! I’m Zara and I run Koala Kids Parties. I started Koala Kids Parties in March 2019 to bring top koality, competitively priced, stress free entertainment for little ones in surrey and the surrounding areas. I am Woking based but travel all over to allsorts of celebrations. Whatever the venue, whatever the character and whatever the event - Koala kids Parties have you covered! I started Koala Kids Parties because I have a passion for working with Children as well as a theatrical background - which is a great mix for providing children’s entertainment! My aim is to spark imaginations and spread happiness wherever I go.

What do you love about running your business? Every. Single. Part. Cliche I know! I love the creative control I have, being able to bring my ideas to life and see people enjoying them. Also the absolute joy when doing parties and seeing the little ones faces light up, be totally engaged and have the best birthday ever. No day is the same; a different character, a different challenge and meeting lots of different people. Such a rewarding and incredible job - well, can you even call it a job?!

How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? Covid-19 brought a halt to parties so meant adapting the business was so important to keep Koala Kids Parties out there. I ran free bedtime stories every monday - friday evenings Live on our facebook page for the first 10 weeks. Each night was a different character and a different story - it was so nice to see children engage and come back every night, taking part in challenges and interacting during the videos. While doing this I was doing Live video calls and pre recorded video messages for little ones and key workers to raise money for Great Ormond Street Hospital. There was no charge for this, I was just asking for donations and the total so far is over £700 - absolutely over the moon! Now a little bit of normality is resuming, we are now offering Zoom parties, doorstep visits, Small outdoor parties and continuing Video messages and live character calls.

Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business The madest, amusing and interesting things that have happened have been marketing related like getting on the front page of the local paper as well as on the radio. All things I had never experienced, but so exciting and such an awesome achievement.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. I’m a theatre graduate from Guildford School of Acting, I love to travel and I am a bit of a ‘workaholic’. I nanny part time for 3 boys ages 1,6 and 7 which keeps me busy and of course allows me to keep ideas for parties up to date.

Finally how can people get in touch with you? Please don’t hesitate to get in touch, I’d love to hear from you! Since 2004 we’ve been providing fun, clean and safe preschool equipment for parties. We started off with Thomas the Train and the Roller Coaster and over the years added on equipment which we know little ones love. What do you love about running your business? Receiving the great feedback from families who’ve and hearing how excited the children were on using the equipment. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? Hygiene and cleanliness has always been an important factor in our business, to adapt we are undertaking indept cleaning and leaving a long time gap between hires. Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business When my boys were smaller they were my inhouse “testers”, the new large Pop Up Tent arrived so I put it up and they were in it like a shot! A while later I couldn’t find my boys, I looked upstairs, downstairs and in the garden, then I heard giggles coming from the Pop Up Tent, they’d heard me calling for them and decided it would be a good game to keep quiet and hide from me! They found it hilariously funny and I was just relieved they weren’t lost! Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. Walking, especially with Pebbles our dog, we walk miles most days, I love gardening though I’m still learning lots, socialising with friends over a coffee and reading. I do a lot of voluntary fundraising work for the local community and at the boys secondary school. Finally how can people get in touch with you? spotlight on Turtle tots surrey Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. I run Turtle Tots Surrey, a baby & toddler swimming business. I started it when my children were settled in primary school and I sought a new challenge. Swimming is my passion and I love teaching, so it made sense to give it a go! I have been running the business since early 2014 (6 years!). What do you love about running your business? I love the connections that I make with parents and their children. Watching babies grow and develop over the years into little swimmers is truly satisfying. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? Unfortunately, due to lockdown, pools have had to close completely, so my business has also. I have been using the time to do sort through my files and do some professional development, and work on reopening! Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business I won the Working Mums ‘Franchisee of the Year’ award in 2018, which I was honoured to receive and was a highlight of the year! I found out as I parked my car at Gatwick South before heading off on a girl’s long weekend to Lanzarote! A perfect time to celebrate. Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. Most of my interests are sporty and still involve water! I do synchronised swimming and am part of Rushmoor Masters Team – we’ve travelled the world competing over the last few years! I also love open water swimming, running, cycling and triathlons. www.swimkidz.co.uk spotlight on swim kidz surrey Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. Swimming lessons for bumps, babies and beyond... Swimkidz offers an innovative and unique swimming programme from birth to age 10 years. The Swimkidz business is built on strong ethics and a proven business model. Founded in 2009 the business continues to grow and become very successful. Swimkidz are proud to say they have literally taught thousands of little ones to swim and become safer around water. I started working for SwimKidz in March 2015 and became a franchisee on the 1st August 2017. What do you love about running your business? Every day I consider myself privileged to have the best job in the world! I derive great satisfaction from sharing my love of swimming with others and being able to make a difference in somebody’s life by teaching them a valuable life skill and great sport. What makes swimming so rewarding is that it is not only fun, social and active but also fosters discipline and courage. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? We are working in the background coming up with ideas on how to safely social distance within our lessons once we are allowed back to swimming pools. This is all dependent on what government guidelines may be issued. Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. I have been swimming for as long as I can remember. Growing up in Zimbabwe it was a part of my daily life: at home, at friends’ houses and at school. From a young age I was helping younger siblings and cousins learn how to swim. I qualified for the school team at age 8, became the House Swimming Captain at age 12, and won the ‘victrix ludorum trophy’ for overall champion in swimming later that same year. As a teenager, I swam competitively for both my school and for various swimming clubs, excelled in butterfly and individual medley, and was presented with Outstanding Achievement certificates for coaching and helping the school team. I have experience teaching one-on-one as well as both big and small groups. I have also taught children and adults of all abilities. My teaching philosophy is to create a fun learning environment with safety as a priority. I am a caring, enthusiastic, and take pride in each new skill that my students master. Online courses available until September Contact Sarah: Tinytouchsurrey@gmail.com Tel 07725 059049

spotlight on tiny touch baby massage Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. Tiny Touch Surrey was born out of a passion for Massage and healing, coupled with my love for babies. I was already a trained Holistic Massage Therapist and Reiki practitioner when I decided to add Baby Massage to my skill set in 2004. I trained with The International Association of Infant Massage, the largest and longest standing worldwide association solely dedicated to baby massage. Once I had children of my own, my passion was fired up even further and I chose to focus my professional career around teaching Baby Massage Courses, helping parents and carers learn how to strengthen the bond with their baby through nurturing touch. I have been running courses in Surrey since 2016.

What do you love about running your business? I love to see the precious moments shared between parents and babies during the sessions as they stare at each other. Seeing parents’ growing confidence, and playing a part in this evolving relationship is rewarding and incredibly humbling. Venturing into parenthood can sometimes be isolating, emotional, confusing or simply overwhelming, so being able to provide a non-judgemental environment where parents feel welcome and encouraged is really important to me. What I love most about my job other than being around lots of babies and meeting lots of lovely people, is making a real difference to both parents and babies as they embark on their journey of family life together.

How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? When lockdown began, we were in week 2 of a 5-week course. While we couldn’t meet face to face, or continue to learn the massage routines, I began free weekly Zoom sessions. We have continued to meet every week since then, and our sessions have become much more important than I think even we realised they would be. Lockdown brings with it a very unique experience of early parenthood, so our sessions have provided a place where we can share our good days and bad, small wins, big battles and our occasional emotional outbursts. The parents have been able to turn to each other with questions and advice and have built up a real support network during this unprecedented time. Once guidelines allowed me to begin teaching my courses online, I started to do so, with the new inclusion of continued free support sessions once the course has finished.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. I live and work in Chertsey, Surrey with my husband, two daughters, our cat and dog. As well as being an Instructor of Baby Massage, I am a Toddle Talk Baby Sign Language Instructor and Teacher of Monkey Music. Life is busy as you might imagine, so when I manage to grab some much needed “me” time, I turn to swimming, a nice social with friends that includes Dinner, Gin or Wine, a good Box Set with my husband and generally any activity that might involve being creative and provides quiet downtime!

Finally how can people get in touch with you? If you would like to get in touch or find out more about any of my courses, you can contact me either by telephone, email or on the Tiny Touch Surrey Facebook page. Tinytouchsurrey@gmail.com www.facebook.com/tinytouchsurrey Tel: 07725 059049

spotlight on crazy hazy classes & parties Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. Hi I am a Children’s Entertainer Crazy Hazy, I have been entertaining at birthdays and all sessional events now for 18 years, When my children were small I would attend lots of parties and I knew I could do it so one day decided I would try it and I have never looked back. What do you love about running your business? At first having my own business worked so well around my children so I was always their for them during the week and due to being weekend work mostly I had Grandparents and Aunties and Uncles available to help me so it worked well not having any child care costs How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? I have taken to doing zoom classes for my song time and pre school over 3’s classes which are all pay as you go and I have done a few birthday parties and other special events via Zoom it is working very well. I now also have a YouTube channel with lots of my FREE work I did whilst on lockdown to keep the children busy. Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business I love to engage with the shy children who are normally at the back because believe it or not I was the shyest little girl you would ever meet, I love bringing out the best in all the children. But I did learn early on that some children get excited and they do not know what to do with themselves and I had one little boy who decided to kicked me in the shin to get my attention and as I bent down to rub it and he went straight for my hair !!! But the job comes with risks Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. I am a mum of two children (young adults now) but they are like chalk and cheese which has helped me a lot. I love nothing more than planning my parties making each one individual to suit the birthday child or event so even on my days off I am always still working. @standrewsschoolwoking

spotlight on St Andrew’s school woking Tell us about your school St. Andrew’s is an established, respected and thriving co-educational Nursery, Pre-Prep and Prep school for children aged 3-13, located in the beautiful village of Horsell, on the outskirts of Woking. What is great / different about your school? St. Andrew’s School seeks to create a nurturing and happy environment of trust and support in which all pupils are encouraged and enabled to develop their skills, talents, interests and potential to the full. We firmly believe that our school’s small size is one of its greatest strengths. With a commitment to two form entry and restricted class sizes, we offer each child in our care the opportunity to develop as an individual, while feeling part of a nurturing environment where everyone counts. Having just completed a fantastic new building project the future for all at St. Andrew’s is brimming with even broader opportunities. How have you adapted your school due to COVID19? The teachers at St. Andrew’s really rose to the challenge of remote learning using all that Google suite had to offer. This enabled lessons to be delivered using Google Classrooms as well as story time sessions, recorded lessons, a Drama competition and numerous staff and pupil meetings. Teachers were in regular contact with pupils and parents using the stream function in Google classrooms as well as old fashioned email and phone calls when required. Since half term we have welcomed back our Nursery, Reception, Years 1 and 6 and subsequently every year group when Government guidance allowed. Tell us about an interesting fact about your school. In our most recent parent questionnaire, the parents judged the quality of the teaching staff to be the school’s greatest strength. Finally how can people get in touch with your school? spotlight on Staines preparatory school Tell us about your school Staines Preparatory School is a happy, welcoming and non-selective school that prides itself on creating a genuine family atmosphere alongside a first rate education. Following a full ISI inspection in December 2019, we were proud to be rated ‘excellent’ in all areas and have recently been shortlisted for ‘Prep School of the Year’.

What is great / different about your school? We adopt a ‘Growth Mindset’ culture which empowers pupils with the core belief that abilities, rather than being fixed, can be developed over time which leads to an increased focus on learning, greater resilience, and superior achievement. Our pupils learn the value of commitment to successful learning, develop discipline and a sense of responsibility. This supportive and nurturing environment enables pupils to fulfil their potential and become more confident, independent lifelong learners across all areas of the curriculum and in December 19 ISI inspectors noted that “Pupils display high levels of self-esteem due to the nurturing environment of the school”.

How have you adapted your school due to COVID19? During this unprecedented time we moved online with our Staines Prep @ Home virtual learning. This included a full timetable of classes with a balanced programme of live virtual lessons, pre-recorded lessons and independent learning, all differentiated to each pupils stage of development. Following considerable planning and preparation by our staff we welcomed back our Nursery, Reception, Year 1 & 6 classes in June whilst maintaining social distancing and still enriching our pupils learning with that all important social interaction. After a further relaxation of national restrictions we were able to bring back our Year 5s part-time and enable all other year groups the opportunity to have time in school before the end of the school year.

Tell us about an interesting fact about your school. Last year we renamed our school houses to reflect our diverse and inclusive society. Our new house names are Attenborough (Sir David Attenborough); Dahl (Roald Dahl); Ennis-Hill (Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill); and Seacole (Mary Seacole).

Finally how can people get in touch with your school? You can find out more about life at Staines Prep through our Facebook, Instagram or Twitter pages. “My teachers are great - they make the lessons fun and interesting and they tailor what we do each week according to what I need help with or what I’m doing at school. They know the curriculum so they can help fill in any gaps”. Year 10 student

spotlight on Wise Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. We teach English as a Foreign Language and we have a Tutoring Division, where we work with lots of young people helping them with the key school subjects. We started the school 7 years ago because initially we saw the need to provide a small independent school for adults whose first language was not English.

What do you love about running your business? That’s a big question! I love the students, the teachers and the challenge. We are a relatively small school but we have grown and developed over the last 7 years culminating last year in gaining accreditation from British Council for teaching English as a Foreign Language. This was a massive achievement and it took a lot of hard work from all the staff. Over the last 7 years we have met the most wonderful and diverse bunch of students! At one time we counted 18 different nationalities at the school. How cool and interesting is that! I love the different cultures and the fact that our students WANT to learn. Most of our students are au pairs. Many of the students comment on the ‘family feel’ to the school which is such a compliment. I love all the ‘extra’ things we’ve done with our students:Themed weeks at the school, presentations, photo competitions, nights out (bingo, quizzes, bonfire night parties, dancing, food evenings, film nights, pub gatherings). The teachers are amazing: committed, professional and funny. We have a great time together and we love our staff nights out! The tutoring division has been an absolute joy to develop. The rapport between the tutor and the student is key to the success of any tutoring assignment. It’s hugely satisfying helping lots of young people do better in their school subjects and seeing their confidence grow.

How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? From the end of March when lockdown began, we had to switch everything to online learning. It was a challenge because it all happened overnight and we had to train teachers on Skype and Zoom but we did it! And we managed to keep some of the classes going including one of our exam classes which is great. It has been tough as we lost a lot of students when they returned to their native countries and for lots of reasons could not continue with the classes. The private tutoring has done really well. We will continue to evolve and adapt. We are launching a new website at the end of July. We are introducing ‘blended learning’ for local students so this is really exciting. We will continue to ensure we have a full social programme for our students in the safest way. A recent survey we did revealed that 94% of our tutors are enjoying private tutoring online. 60% of our tutees are school children and 40% are adults. 76% thought the online experience was better than they thought it would be with 20% still not sure and 4% not so keen. 100% of tutees thought the experience had not been worse than they’d expected. 84% are happy to continue online with 72% wanting to continue throughout the Summer. In terms of platforms for private tutoring online: Skype 50%, Zoom 30%, FaceTime 13%, Microsoft teams 4% and Google 4%.

Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. I am Liz Denham, the Managing Director and founder of WISE. Originally from Bristol I went to Uni in Leeds and after living in Italy, I finally settled in Weybridge. We’ve been here 21 years and we have two grown up kids and 2 dogs! I love teaching and meeting and finding out about people. I love all sports and love playing tennis. I play at Walton Tennis Club. I have supported Leeds Utd since I was 7. I love going to theatre (and have really missed that over the last few months). I love a good, thought-provoking film. I love nature and walking and skiing. I love travelling. I love socialising with good friends. I love speaking Italian and German (though the latter is a little rusty now!)

***SPECIAL RATES TO SUPPORT STUDENTS WHILST THEY ARE OUT OF SCHOOL*** Learning to code helps children learn new languages, helps solve everyday problems, supports independence and creativity, improves communication, and creates career opportunities later on. Due to the ongoing pandemic the E-IT Club, normally classroom based, has moved to online classes until further notice, and limited slots are still available. The club is offering Zoom lessons to children aged 4 and upwards in areas like Python, HTML, Scratch, CSS and Javascript. Salina has been running this club for over 10 years and finds many children thrive in her company, including those with learning difficulties. Lessons are normally for an hour at a time, up to 3 times a week, are fully interactive, and give children the chance to make games, learn the basics of programming, create websites. The aim is that children find the lessons to be fun whilst learning key digital skills at the same time. All children need is access to a PC or laptop and an internet connection, once connected via Zoom the screens can be shared and the fun learning begins! ***A parent recently said – “I just wanted to say a massive thank you for your call with “B” yesterday, I have been struggling with the lack of routine to get her to do anything. She has shown everyone what she has achieved…she really connects with you and I just wanted to say how appreciative I am…”

spotlight on E-IT Club Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. My business is a very relaxed coding school for children, where they can learn how to code on various physical and virtual platforms whilst having fun. After 2 children, I wondered what my future held, so thought my love for children and all things IT related, I could start on preparing the next generation of children for a digital future, that seems to have arrived earlier than anticipated! What do you love about running your business? I absolutely love working with children and making a usually dreary perceived subject and turning it into a fun reality, and seeing their eyes light up and knowing that every week the children want to return, some even increasing their time with me. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? I have transferred all of my business to online learning, using Zoom, so that I can still see the children every week. There is a definite advantage to this as no child is too far to attend now. I am sure that some of my clients that do travel from neighbouring counties might like to hang onto this form of teaching, to save some time and petrol. Share a funny / amusing / interesting story that has happened whilst undertaking your business One of my little ones, only 5 years old at the time, informed his mum that he would like to give up school and just come to the Coding ClubHouse every day! Another child has adopted me as “Her sister!”. She has since informed me that when she’s older, she’s moving in! And lastly, when the pandemic first broke out, I had asked a few parents to transition with their children online. One child was quite upset she couldn’t attend in person, and said she couldn’t bear to just view our lessons on a screen! Tell us about yourself, who are you and what interests you have outside of running your business. Yoga - Adapting to COVID

GUIDE

spotlight on prittie yoga Tell us about your business, why you started it and how long you’ve been running your business for. I started my business in 2018 when I decided to devote the year to Yoga by taking a Hatha Yoga teacher training. I hadn’t intended to become a teacher and had been practicing for twenty years but felt the course would deepen my practice. It certainly did! I loved it so much that I found myself flying through it and taking two more teaching training for children and for teens! What do you love about running your business? I love that I get to help people through teaching Yoga. It helps their physical body as well as quietens their mind. There is so much fun that can be had teaching children and teens Yoga and I’m always amazed by how much they learn and remember. We have a lot of laughs along the way and take Yoga to another level through eye yoga, breath work. story telling, tapping, mantras, mudras and different foods that can help our moods and bodies. How have you adapted your business due to COVID19? I’ve moved everything online and teach via zoom. Children’s Yoga Club has moved to family Yoga and Teen Yoga continues on Fridays at 4pm. All my adult classes remain the same and I’ve even added two new classes including a Yoga Nidra on Sunday evenings which is a 45 minute relaxation equivalent to 4 hours of sleep! spotlight on staines hockey club Tell us about your club, when it was started and how you are involved. Staines Hockey Club has been running since 1890 and we are one of the oldest clubs in England. We are based at Staines and Laleham Sports Association, and we share the management of the facility with Staines and Laleham Cricket Club and Laleham Archery Club. We also have junior football, walking football and a dog training school use the facilities We have had a junior or colts section for as long as I can remember, over 30 years, and it is the lifeblood of every club as home grown talent is the future of every club. I have been involved with the Junior section on and off for about 15 years, I got involved through my son starting playing in the junior section, following in my footsteps, as well as his uncle and his grandfather.

What do you love about running your club? The joy of being involved in coaching the Colts is to see them learn what a fantastic social, inclusive and fun game hockey is. It is so rewarding to see the improvement in their skills and ability. It is also the camaraderie of the coaching staff, the volunteers and the parents. We have a fantastic welcoming and positive vibe running through the club and we pride ourselves on our family friendly approach and our inclusiveness.

How have you adapted your club due to COVID19? COVID19 has hit the club as it has with every other sports club across the country. It has meant the juniors have not been able to train twice a week, to learn hockey skills, to let off steam and to meet up with friends they might not see otherwise. It is a great social time for them. However, this all pales into insignificance when you see how this pandemic has had such a devastating impact across the whole country on lives, livelihoods and families.

Share an interesting story that involves your club. We were delighted to welcome BBC crew to Staines HC in August 2017, to celebrate the 12 month anniversary of the GB Women’s team winning Olympic Gold. This was a fantastic opportunity to showcase hockey to the nation and to encourage all ages to give hockey ago under HockeyFest and Back2Hockey. This involved a lot of our children, together with children from other local clubs, coming down to the club for about 530am and taking part in lots of hockey coaching drills. Again it was a lovely morning and being well supported by our other local clubs for the good of the wider game.

Tell us about your coaches. We have a great coaching group and parents who fully support us with being able to run the Colts section. The club as a whole have a thriving social section for all ages, which doesn’t always revolve around hockey. I would highly recommend giving hockey a go.

Upcycling Add&Heading Competition Here

FAMILY DIRECTORY Your Essential Family Guide

family life GUIDE

Surrey residents challenged to upcycle their waste Surrey residents are being challenged to enjoy a more sustainable summer this year by learning to upcycle their waste instead of throwing it away. Upcycling is the perfect way to refashion or repurpose items. So, before splashing out on a new piece of furniture, why not consider how a coat of paint could transform your current piece? And rather than putting that empty jam jar into the recycling bin, take a minute to ponder the possibilities, do you need a new candle holder, vase or planter? As an incentive, the Surrey Environment Partnership (SEP) has launched an exciting new upcycling competition. Taking place throughout July, Surrey residents will simply need to submit a photograph of a recently completed upcycling project for a chance to win a zero-waste hamper of goodies donated by Fetch’em from the Cupboard and Pedrick’s Zero Waste Shop. SEP chairman Councillor Neil Dallen said: “As well as saving you money, upcycling also allows you to create unique and customisable pieces for your home and garden. And it comes with environmental benefits too. By reusing or repurposing items, you are actively creating less waste and it can even transform a single-use item into an item that can be used indefinitely.” The competition is open to all Surrey residents, you just need to submit your entry by midnight 31 July. To enter, or if you are interested in starting a new upcycling project, then head over to the SEP website for more ideas and tutorials.

Enter by 31 July here www.surreyep.org.uk/competition Distributed to North West Surrey within Elmbridge, Runnymede, Spelthorne, Surrey Heath & Woking boroughs
