3603 E. 10th Street | Sioux Falls SD 57103
Meet the VanderPol Family Ryan and Courtney VanderPol have been involved in the Sioux Falls business community for over 12 years. They opened the LA Weight Loss Center on Louise Avenue in January 2003, which they still own and operate. You can now find them in the Western Mall under the new name CR Results Weightloss, Nutrition & Health. They have a passion for helping people not only achieve their weightloss goals, but also to learn a lifetime of weight management. Growing up in Edgerton, Minnesota, Ryan enjoyed the great friendships you develop in a smaller community. He and Courtney wanted to bring that small town feel to Sioux Falls so in 2013 when the FamilyFest Event became an opportunity, they jumped at the chance. FamilyFest is dedicated to the success and celebration of the family in an environment that is fun and entertaining for everyone of every age. It’s everything families need to play, know & grow! Ryan and Courtney have 3 children: Kiara, 20, graduate of Sioux Falls Christian, attending Pharmacy School at SDSU this fall, Riley, age 8, attending Sioux Falls Christian, and Trinity, age 3.

MARTIAL ARTS CAN BENEFIT STUDENTS Psychologically
artial art is a very unique sport in that it not only benefits people physically, but it can help them grow mentally as well. Most people take classes to learn how to defend themselves in the event of a physical altercation. However, as they progress through their training, many students will find themselves benefiting from a mental perspective as well. For those who run martial arts schools and are looking to convince people of the benefits of enrolling in classes, it may be wise to highlight the mental advantages offered, as well as the physical gains that one will achieve.
1. Improved Focus: Learning disciplines such as Taekwondo all require a high level of engagement in order to achieve success. This involves students paying careful attention when learning moves and counters, as well as understanding how to temper their strength when sparring so as not to hurt anyone. According to the Chicago Now blog, students will be able to apply the focus they need for martial arts to other areas of their lives. The level of discipline required can lead to completion of both short- and long-term goals that may apply to other areas of a student’s life.
12
FamilyFest Resource Guide 2015
2. Remaining calm under Pressure: when stress levels are high, people have a tendency to exhibit a negative reaction to outside stimuli. This can be problematic in a wide variety of situations. However, the DC Taekwondo blog wrote that martial arts training can help people bring their anxiety levels down and allow them to stay centered, even in the midst of chaos around them. These skills are learned during classroom training and sparring sessions where panicking can lead to someone being hurt. Many self-defense disciplines help people develop a sense of inner peace that allows them to think quickly and act with precision, all while maintaining a sense of calm.
3. Goal Setting: When people sign up to take a martial arts class, they quickly come to the realization that their training is very goal oriented. There is a certain amount of time that an individual will have to obtain mastery of a level before moving on to the next. As a result, setting and achieving goals will become second nature to students who can then apply these skills to other areas of their lives and see success.

SKILLS
Listening is one of the hardest skills to master. Martial Arts classes offer kids an ideal space to develop and refine their active listening skills. Students must have their ears peeled throughout class to keep pace, follow the instructor and take constructive feedback. Students who listen reap the rewards of achieving their next belt. When they pay attention to details from their instructors, they are more likely to rise up the ranks. Individuals need to believe active listening is a crucial part of their job, Bloomberg reported. It requires being fully present and ready to respond at any moment. If student anticipate the next move, they may miss a step. Gap Psychology recommends individuals limit their talking and turn off all worries. If people are focused on other matters, they can’t fully engage in the content or the person’s body language. Forbes suggests that students try to visualize what the speaker is saying, either by constructing a literal picture or imagining abstract concepts.

F
or outdoor entertainment that’s fun for the whole family, check out a South Dakota state park. From picnicking to biking to boating to swimming, there is no shortage of opportunities for fun. With outdoor activities, events, and resources, your options are only as limited as your imagination. Spending the day at a South Dakota State Park is not only fun for all ages, it’s also economical. With a day pass only $6 per vehicle per day, a state park is a perfect place to spend the day without breaking the bank. With the day pass, you get access to disc golf courses and equipment checkouts, beaches, docks, programs, events, and much more! A variety of events take place throughout the year in state parks. Some events teach first timers a new skill, such as Archery for Beginners. Others, like the History Hike, are educational. The Family Fun Amazing Race and the Nature Olympics are activities the whole family can enjoy while getting out and getting active. See the Events Calendar on our website for a full schedule of events. We have state parks all over South Dakota, from Lewis and Clark Lake in Yankton to Farm Island Recreation Area in Pierre, from Mina Lake in Aberdeen to Custer State Park and Fort Sisseton. To find a park near you or for more information, go to www.gfp.sd.gov or call 605.773.3391.

We don’t always know what causes preterm labor and premature birth. However, there are some things that we do know make it more likely. These things are called risk factors. Having a risk factor doesn’t mean that you will definitely have preterm labor or give birth early. But it may increase your chances.
These three risk factors make you most likely to have preterm labor and give birth early: 1. Prior premature birth: You’ve had a premature baby in the past.
2. Multiples: You’re pregnant with twins, triplets or more. 3. Cervical or uterine problems: Problems with the structure or function of your cervix or uterus.

FamilyFest Resource Guide 2015
Some other risk factors include: Family history: This means someone in your family (like your mother, grandmother or sister) has had a premature baby. If you were born prematurely, you’re more likely than others to give birth early.
Weight: Being underweight or overweight before pregnancy or not gaining enough weight during pregnancy. Maternal health conditions, including: • High blood pressure and preeclampsia • Diabetes • Thrombophilias (blood clotting disorders) • C ertain infections during pregnancy, like a sexually transmitted disease (STD) or other infections of the uterus, urinary tract or vagina. • S moking: Babies born to women who smoke during pregnancy are more likely than babies born to nonsmokers to be born prematurely. • S tress: High levels of stress that continue for a long time may cause health problems.

• M aternal age: Being younger than 17 or older than 35 makes you more likely than other women to give birth early. • R ace/ethnicity: We don’t know why race plays a role in premature birth; researchers are working to learn more about it. In the United States, black women are more likely to give birth early, followed by Native American and Hispanic moms. These are just a few of the risk factors for preterm labor or premature birth. You can see a complete list on our website at www.marchofdimes.org .
There are some things that ALL women can do to reduce their risk of preterm labor and premature birth: • Don’t smoke, drink alcohol or take street drugs. • Make sure you go to all your prenatal care appointments, even if you’re feeling fine. This allows your doctor to detect any problems early.
• Try to get to a healthy weight before your get pregnant. Once you are pregnant, ask your doctor how much weight you should gain.
• Make sure any chronic health conditions are being treated and are under control.
• Protect yourself from infections by washing your hands with soap and water. Know what foods to avoid during pregnancy. Have safe sex. Don’t touch cat feces (waste).
• Try to reduce stress. Make sure you ask for help from family and friends. • Once you have had your baby, it is best to wait
at least 18 to 23 months before getting pregnant again. And make sure you schedule a preconception checkup before your next pregnancy. If you have concerns about whether you may be at risk for giving birth early, see your health care provider. With guidance and care, you will have a better chance of having a healthy pregnancy.

Most people have adopted smokefree rules in their homes. Still exposre in the home remains a significant problem. • The home is the primary source of SHS exposure for children. • About 80 million (1 in 4) Americans live in multiunit housing and can be exposed to unwanted SHS in their homes. our baby’s condition is not compatible with life.” These stunning words were spoken to Susan and John Vanden Berg of Hills, MN, twelve weeks into Susan’s pregnancy with their first child. “We got married a little later in life, and we were thrilled to learn we were expecting a baby,” says Susan. “At our 12-week appointment, though, they couldn’t find a heartbeat.” An ultrasound revealed that the baby’s heart, liver, and intestines were outside the body; the doctor predicted that he or she would die in utero. “We refused the option to terminate, and they told us to come back for an ultrasound every two weeks, so we would know when the baby had passed.” The Vanden Bergs went to their appointment every two weeks with heavy hearts. Each time, however, their baby was still alive. They learned it was a boy, and as he grew, it appeared that his heart was actually inside his body. Their doctor said that would give him a slim chance to survive. They named him Kaden, which means “little fighter.”

FamilyFest Resource Guide 2015
The University of Michigan Health System at Ann Arbor, which specializes in high-risk pregnancies, was chosen for the baby’s birthplace. Complications arose a month before her due date, and Susan was flown to Ann Arbor on an emergency medical flight. She was able to continue the pregnancy until close to her due date, and Kaden was born by cesarean section on September 27, 2012, weighing six pounds, 8 ounces. He had a hole in his diaphragm, heart defects— including two holes in his heart, and his intestines were outside of his body. He also had a cleft lip and palate. “I told John—‘I’m okay, stay with Kaden—he needs you more than I do,’ ” says Susan. Not knowing if he would survive for even minutes after his birth, Susan wanted Kaden’s daddy to be with him every minute he could be. True to his name, Kaden fought to survive. Kaden went on a ventilator at four days old to help him breathe. “He averaged two Code Blues a day,” says Susan, referring to the emergency code called when a patient is in immediate danger of death. After a few weeks, Susan had to

the ventilator. He gets around by scooting on his bottom or with a foot-powered car. He says “Mama,” and babbles a lot, even with the tracheostomy tube in his throat that inhibits his ability to make sounds. His parents hope he will one day walk and talk. “The progress he’s made in the past year has been phenomenal,” says Susan. “Life has been tough for him, and we want him to have the best chance he can have.” John and Susan are grateful for the help LifeScape has provided. “The therapists really see his potential, and work very hard to help him,” says Susan. “God has put us in touch with wonderful doctors, nurses, and therapists to help us along the way.” Despite seven surgeries and more to come, Kaden is a happy child. In the fall, he will start pre-school at Hills-Beaver Creek, where he can watch and mimic other children. The Vanden Bergs make life as typical as they can, taking him camping, for pontoon and golf cart rides, and for adventures with his eleven adoring cousins. Physical therapist Shawn Frewaldt helps Kaden work towards his goal of walking. During his twice-weekly therapy sessions, she works on building his core strength, balance, and leg strength. return her job in Sioux Falls to retain their health insurance. John left his job and stayed in Michigan with Kaden.
“There’s no way Kaden would be here without God,” says Susan. “He’s a miracle of God, and we’re so thankful.” To learn more about the services LifeScape offers call 605-444-9700 or visit LifeScapeSD.org.
On Oct. 8, 2013, over a year later, he was strong enough to be transferred to the pediatric intensive care unit at Sanford Children’s Hospital in Sioux Falls, where he remained about a month. On November 12, 2013, Kaden was admitted to the Medically Complex Program in LifeScape’s Specialty Hospital in Sioux Falls. LifeScape specializes in rehabilitative therapies for children after illness, accident or surgery, and he began therapy right away to gain strength and skills. Another area of expertise is specialized equipment, and he was custom-fitted with a seating and wheelchair system that that would grow with him. LifeScape’s ventilator weaning program helped him learn to breathe without the ventilator. He now uses it only at night to keep him safe while he sleeps. John and Susan’s “little fighter” made excellent progress, and they were thrilled to take him home on March 11, 2014. Now 2-1/2, Kaden gets physical and speech therapy twice a week at LifeScape Rehabilitation Center in Sioux Falls. At home, a nurse provides daytime care, but they have been unable to find an overnight nurse to monitor Kaden without
Speech-language pathologist Caitlin Abbas teaches Kaden to communicate through the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). Kaden requests a ball to put into the toy by giving Caitlin the correct picture from his customized PECS book. Kaden also comes to Lifescape twice a week for speech therapy, and is working on imitating speech sounds with the future goal of speaking.

A
s you drive to work you are likely thinking about many things. Things like what emails to return, deadlines ahead, what to have for supper, and household tasks to be done. Sound familiar? In the mix of your busy and stressful morning, did you remember to drop off Susie at day care? “The worst thing any parent or caregiver can do is think that this could never happen to them, that they are not capable of inadvertently leaving their child behind,” says Janette Fennell, founder and president of kidsandcars.org, the leading national, nonprofit child safety organization working to prevent injuries and deaths of children in and around motor vehicles. “This can and does happen to the most loving, responsible and attentive parents.”
Safety tips from kidsandcars.org Remember the following “Look Before You Lock” BE SAFE tips Back seat - Put something in the back seat so you have to open the back door when leaving the vehicle - cell phone, employee badge, handbag, etc.
Every child should be correctly restrained in the back seat. Stuffed animal - Move it from the car seat to the front seat to remind you when your baby is in the back seat. Ask your babysitter or childcare provider to call you within 10 minutes if your child hasn’t arrived on time. Focus on driving - Avoid cell phone calls and texting while driving. Every time you park your vehicle open the back door to make sure no one has been left behind. Kidsandcars.org urges everyone to read “Fatal Distraction,” Gene Weingarten’s Pulitzer Prize-winning article in The Washington Post at http://ow.ly/ldDwU, which explains how these heartbreaking and preventable tragedies can happen to anyone. It’s important to remember that on any day, leaving a child in your car could happen to you. Take a moment and decide on at least one tip from above that you’ll start using today, so you don’t become a statistic.

summer SAFETY S
ummer time is now here! Time to go outside and play. Summer is a great time for you and your children to go play in the great outdoors. However, keep the following summer safety tips in mind for an illness and injury free summer.
• Apply early and repeat: For kids six months and older (as well as adults), sunscreens with SPF of 15 or greater reduce the intensity of UVR’s that cause sunburns. Apply liberally 15 to 30 minutes before sun exposure so it can absorb into the skin and decrease the likelihood that it will be washed off. Then, reapply every two hours and after kids swim, sweat or dry off with a towel.
• Cover: Dress kids in protective clothing and hats. Clothing can be an excellent barrier of ultraviolet rays. Many lightweight sun protective styles cover the neck, elbows and knees.
• Keep infants out of the sun: Babies younger than six months should be kept out of direct sunlight, dressed in cool, comfortable clothing and wearing hats with brims. The American Academy of Pediatrics says sunscreen may be used on infants younger than six months on small areas of skin if adequate clothing and shade are not available.
• Plan early morning play: For kids beyond that baby stage, plan children’s outdoor activities to avoid peak sun hours (10 a.m. to 4 p.m.) as much as possible.
• Beware of shade: Shade provides relief from heat

but offers a false sense of security about UVR protection. People can still sunburn in shade, because light is scattered and reflected.
• Prevent dehydration: To prevent dehydration, kids should drink 12 ounces of fluid 30 minutes before an activity begins and take mandatory fluid breaks, with kids under 90 pounds drinking 5 ounces every 20 minutes during activities and kids over 90 pounds drinking 9 ounces every 20 minutes. Tip: a child’s gulp equals a half-ounce of fluid, so children should drink about 10 gulps for every 20 minutes. With these summer safety tips, Sanford Children’s wishes you a safe and enjoyable summer!

training tips
FOR DOGS
CHEWING: There are multiple reasons why pets chew on objects. Some of the most common reasons are: teething, improper confinement, boredom, separation anxiety, need for attention, improper chew toys, and lack of exercise. Puppies begin teething between 5 weeks and 6 months. If your pet is teething, a freezable chew toy will help ease the pain and give the puppy a productive object to chew. If this is not the case, your pet may be chewing out of boredom. By giving your dog plenty of exercise and entertainment, they will be less likely to start chewing objects. If your dog gets bored easily, make sure there are plenty of durable chew toys and beef tendons around. Do not give your dog any human items to chew on: this will only confuse your pet and encourage them to chew on other items. If your pet does chew on human objects, make a loud noise and give your pet their own toy. Be diligent. If your pet is chewing on a shoe (or another human object) take the object and replace it with a toy that belongs to your pet. **If none of these solutions work, a taste deterrent like Bitter Apple works to make objects less appealing.
JUMPING: Having your pet jump up on people can be dangerous, especially if your well-meaning pet jumps on a child and knocks them down. To keep your pet from jumping up on people, it is important that everyone in the household follows this routine: when your pet jumps up on you, do not back away. Instead, step forward so your pet loses their balance. While doing this, completely ignore your pet. Once your pet is down, tell your

pet to sit. Once your pet sits, praise or give treats. This may take a while, but after consistent use your pet will stop jumping on people.
What is the big deal with GRAIN-FREE FOODS? Short answer: PREMIUM INGREDIENTS. Grain-free foods are becoming increasingly popular because they use quality protein sources, which is important for your pet’s health. Because these foods use premium ingredients, your pet will be healthier and therefore will have to go to the veterinarian less; however, there is significant debate about the benefits of a grain-free diet. Here we give you both sides. Benefits: PREVENT VET BILLS: Many studies have linked poor health to grains: by spending a little extra money on a high-quality food, you will be preventing unnecessary veterinarian bills. LOWER CARBOHYDRATE CONTENT: Carbohydrates have been shown to contribute to obesity, diabetes, kidney stones, and allergies. Switching to a grainfree food will act as a preventative diet for these problems. REDUCED WASTE: Since grain-free foods contain less filler, there will be less pet waste to clean up. This means your pet is using the food they eat. HIGH QUALITY PROTEIN: Low quality, hard-to-digest high protein content (like corn) is what contributes to kidney disease. As such, switching your pet to a diet with a high quality protein will reduce your pet’s chances of kidney disease. BACK TO NATURE: A compelling argument for grain-free foods is that pets are not evolved to eat grains: they are unable to efficiently digest and process them. A grainfree diet is closer to what they would eat in the wild. Drawbacks: IRRITATES SYSTEMATIC YEAST ISSUES: Grainfree diets use potatoes, sweet potatoes and yams as their carbohydrate source. A grain-free diet may not be right for pets that suffer from systematic yeast issues and for pets that are allergic. HIGH QUALITY GRAINS: High quality grain (like oats and rice) in proper proportions as a carbohydrate source, not a protein source, can be good. HIGH COST: Grain-free diets tend to cost more, since the ingredients used are more expensive (corn is inexpensive; meat sources tend to be more expensive). NEW PRODUCT: Grain-free diets are relatively new: as such, we do not know all of the benefits and the drawbacks a grain-free diet will have in two generations.

Midcontinent® started offering its home automation and monitoring service in 2014. Recently, the company launched a new self-monitoring package available for as low as $14.95 per month to appeal to a growing interest in the technology. “We’ve heard that customers really appreciate having these services from a local provider, so they can come to us for multiple services all at once,” adds Schoenfelder.
Getting Inventive You don’t have to be super “tech savvy” to use Midco SmartHOME or worry about setting it up. Trained representatives from Midcontinent Communications walk homeowners and renters through the process of choosing the right equipment based on the home layout and the customer’s specific needs. They also install the system and train how to use it. “It’s fun to help customers imagine how they want to use the service, because it’s really up to them,” says Schoenfelder. “We keep hearing inventive new ideas from customers.”
Some of those ideas include: • Receiving alerts when your kids get home from school – or when they don’t enter their door lock code within a certain window of time • Setting up outside cameras so you can keep an eye on kids who may not be following playground rules or animals “visiting” your yard • Installing a water sensor by your washing machine, so you’re immediately alerted if the hose breaks • Keeping a workshop at 60 degrees, and then automatically changing the temperature when the door sensor detects someone has entered the area • Getting an alert – and creating a loud sound – when a restricted door is opened, such as a gun cabinet or a liquor cabinet • Moving portable carbon monoxide detectors around your home where your family sleeps, such as on a nightstand, rather than having them mounted on walls or ceilings
Worried about how all this equipment might change the look of your home? It’s designed to be aesthetically pleasing and easily transferable. For example, door and window sensors are affixed with simple, removable adhesive tape. “If we decide to move the equipment to a new location in the house or we want to move, everything goes with us,” says Braden. “That’s what’s nice about it.”
Delivering Peace of Mind The true meaning behind home automation and monitoring technology is to make our busy lives easier, and Braden says he’s seen a change. “I’m interested in any new technology that proves to simplify our lives, and Midco SmartHOME™ has definitely delivered. Our lives are more comfortable, and we can be at peace knowing that our family, our belongings and our pets are safe,” adds Braden.

MY CHILD IS
three
He MUST be Ready for Preschool
M
ost preschools will start accepting children around the age of three, but that does not mean your three year old is necessarily ready for preschool. Preschool readiness has more to do with where your child is developmentally than chronological age. Is your child socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively ready to participate in a daily, structured, educational program?
Socially- Is your child able to play, cooperate and take turns with others? In a group setting, such as preschool, children are expected to positively interact with each other. How to help: Preschool age children are just learning appropriate social skills. You can assist your child by practicing at home. You can share a stuffed animal, take turns cutting out pictures in a magazine and play board games.

FamilyFest Resource Guide 2015
Remember it is just as important to learn how to be a good winner as well as to be a good loser.
Emotionally- Can your child spend time away from their primary care givers for short periods of time? Typically, children that have experience being cared for by a family member or babysitter will have an easier time separating when they begin a preschool program. How to help: Preschool children need to understand that parents will return. Gradually introduce your child to short periods of separation with a trusted friend or family member. Exposure to other adults and children will expand the child’s confidence while building feelings of trust. Physically- Does your child have basic self-help skills? Are the potty-trained, can they wash their hands, use
buttons, zippers and eat a snack/lunch without parental assistance? Preschool teachers are there to help; however, they have many students and will expect the children to have some basic understanding of skills. How to help: It may be faster and easier to do everything for your child, however, when they are dropped off at school, they will feel empowered to complete basic tasks without adult assistance. Set your child up for success by practicing self- help skills and allowing your child to be independent. Practice good bathroom habits, using the toilet, wiping, washing hands, how to use a Kleenex, and dressing skillsbuttons, zippers, and snaps. Most preschools implement a snack time. Teach your child how to open a milk carton, manipulate a lunch box and its contents, and to use a napkin.
Cognitively- Is your child comfortable with a structured schedule and able to understand/follow simple directions? Preschools usually follow a routine (circle time, story time, snack time, center time). As children move from one activity to another, the preschool teacher will ask the children to stop one activity and move to the next activity in a short amount of time. The children will need to transition and follow simple directions (sit in a circle; put the toys away; take out a blue crayon). How to help: Begin to follow a schedule that meets the needs of your family (clean up after playing; story time and then nap). Parents can help children by setting clear expectations, allowing limited choices (Do you want to wear the red shirt or green shirt? Do you want spaghetti or macaroni and cheese?) and working together as a family. Parents can make a game out of learning to follow directions (stand up and clap 3 times; turn in a circle and moo like a cow; jump 4 times and sit down). Preschool is a wonderful time for children; a time for socialization, an introduction to learning and a preparation for kindergarten. Parents should visit a variety of programs to choose what best fits their child and family. Children that are socially, emotionally, physically and cognitively prepared for school will find more success than attending just because they turn three years old.

MAKE-A-WISH SOUTH DAKOTA’S
vision
To Make Every Eligible Child’s Wish Come True
M
ake-A-Wish® South Dakota has been granting wishes to kids facing life-threatening medical conditions since 1984. Over the last three decades, more than 1,150 wishes have been granted to kids in every part of the state.
Make-A-Wish’s mission is to grant the wishes of children with life-threatening medical conditions to enrich the human experience with hope, strength and joy. That may be a trip, an item, a chance to meet their favorite sports figure or celebrity or the opportunity to be a train conductor or a firefighter, for example. “We grant 50 to 60 wishes a year to kids across South Dakota, but we know there are kids we are missing,” Paul Krueger, president and CEO, said. “We want to educate the public about who we serve - life-threatening medical conditions is key – and make sure every eligible child receives a wish.” Krueger said that nationally 70 percent of Make-A-Wish kids go on to beat their illnesses. Sadly, 30 percent do pass away.

FamilyFest Resource Guide 2015
Currently Make-A-Wish South Dakota has nearly 50 kids in the process of receiving a wish. The average wish costs nearly $7,000. Make-A-Wish relies on the support of individuals and businesses, and events, such as Family Fest, for its support and volunteers play a key role in the wish process.
MORE INFO. To qualify for a wish, a child must be between the ages of 2 ½ and 18 and facing a life-threatening medical condition – one that is progressive, degenerative or malignant – at the time of referral. Referrals can be made by medical professionals, including doctors, nurses, nurse practitioners, child life specialists and social workers. Parents or family members with direct knowledge of the child’s illness or the sick children themselves can also make a referral to Make-A-Wish. Referrals can be made by calling 335-8000 or 1-800-640-9198. There is also an online referral form at southdakota.wish.org.
