MOTIVATION
ver the years we have talked to a lot of students about a lack of motivation. With anything, a lack of motivation can happen at times. This got us thinking about how many people make decisions based on the short term results rather than looking at the big picture. A kid doesn’t see the big picture yet, and that is to be expected. We know firsthand that training in Martial Arts is challenging, fun, frustrating, tiring, overwhelming, exciting, very rewarding and it has changed lives. We are confident that it can do the same for so many more people. One of the most rewarding parts of this profession is that we have been able to witness, firsthand, some pretty memorable transformations in students over the past 16 years. Some of the most memorable changes we have witnessed are: • Seeing several shy children grow into confident adolescents who are ready for anything. One extreme case was a 5 year old boy named Preston. Preston was really shy; so shy that he would hide behind his mom’s leg the first few times he came to lessons. His mom was determined to get Preston involved because he would not raise his hand in school to ask the teacher for help.
10
FamilyFest Resource Guide 2016
When his class would go to recess, Preston would play in the dirt by himself away from all the other kids. After Preston’s sixth visit, we were able to get him to join the lesson and had his mom sneak out into the lobby. We had been allowing Preston and his mom to sit in on the lesson. Preston would always stay right by his mother’s side. We could get him to hit the target in between drills, but he would not move away from her to do it. Finally, we got him to join a line away from his mom. After she snuck out, he realized that he was just fine and went on to become a level three, first degree Black Belt. Now this is an extreme case, and we are not sharing this story to brag. Preston’s mom deserves all the credit. If it were not for her bringing Preston and being persistent with him about going, we would have never been able to witness his transformation. There are several other kids who we have witnessed overcome shyness over the years. In each case it took a lot of patience and persistence by the parents to continue to bring their child to lessons, even if they did
not want to go that day. These parents knew once their child got to the lesson they were going to enjoy it and they always do.
AY PLAN YOUR BIRT HD EELS! PART Y ON EIGHT W H
• We watched how it helped my youngest boy and several other students improve their focus and channel energy towards something positive. • We’ve watched a child who was pigeon-toed and uncoordinated, improve his coordination and earn his black belt. He was also able to excel at baseball. • Our mission is to inspire students of all ages to get out of their comfort zone and have the confidence to step up in the classroom, at testing, team sports and even in their professional life. These life changes are why we love our career. We truly get a chance to influence and positively affect the life of each student that we meet. It isn’t always an easy path or a quick turnaround; it takes time and effort. There will be successes and some defeats along the way, but it will be so worth it when we tie that Black Belt around their waist. The benefit of earning a Black Belt, something that cannot just be given to you, is such a rewarding experience. The hard work and dedication that it takes will make you successful in other aspects of life.

BECOMING A GREAT LEADERTakes Time
B
ecoming a great leader takes time, practice and a plethora of skills. However, you don’t have to take classes in leadership to develop the traits and abilities most often associated with positions of authority.Tiger Rock Martial Arts can teach these skills. Here are three traits all leaders should have that martial arts may help you learn: 1. Perseverance: As with any position, leadership roles come with ups and downs. Leaders may feel the impact of mistakes or challenges even more because they bear the burden of responsibility. But when the going gets tough, good leaders have to persevere, not only to maintain their role but also to motivate and support their staff. Martial artists also require perseverance.
From mastering difficult moves to pushing on during a losing sparring match or even just getting through a tough day of training, practitioners face all sorts of odds. The persistence and determination you learn from picking yourself up off a mat can be useful outside of the dojo as well. 2. Confidence: Since other people look to leaders for guidance, the individual in the spotlight should be confident.
That doesn’t mean you have to be 100 percent certain all the time, but knowing why you’ve made certain decisions and that they were the right choices, is beneficial. Building confidence is a lifelong journey that’s sure to have ups and downs. Actively working toward establishing positivity can improve your leadership capabilities. Martial arts help you achieve fitness and physical-skill goals, which naturally contribute to confidence. 3. Discipline: Discipline can cover many facets of life, from helping you handle delicate situations with care to managing your time and resources wisely. Martial arts encourage students to develop discipline by challenging them and having them follow specific codes of conduct.

Is Your Child
WEARING THE RIGHT HELMET?
B
eing a kid involves an occasional stumble and fall. Being a parent involves protecting your child the best you can. There are various things you can do to prevent your child from experiencing injuries that can lead to disabilities and even death. One of those is simply having your child wear a helmet when riding a bike, tricycle, scooter or skateboard. Did you know? Bike helmets reduce head injuries by 85 percent and brain injuries by 88 percent. More children ages 5 to 14 are seen in emergency rooms for injuries related to biking than any other sport. Use it right Just like a car seat, a helmet doesn’t do much good if it isn’t used correctly. Here are some general safety tips regarding the use of a helmet.
24
FamilyFest Resource Guide 2016
• Make sure your child has the right size helmet. • Make sure your child wears it every time he or she is riding his or her bike or tricycle or using a scooter or skateboard. • Replace the helmet as your child outgrows it. • The helmet should be replaced every five years or sooner. • If the helmet has been involved in an impact while in use, it needs to be replaced. • Putting on a bike helmet is as easy as “eyes, ears and mouth.” • Eyes: Put the helmet on your head. Look up. You should see the bottom rim of the helmet.
HEALTH & NUTRITION
KNOW
When it is time to purchase a new helmet, let your child pick it out. Your child will be more likely to wear it each time if it’s something he or she chose. Don’t forget your helmet. You are your child’s first teacher, so be sure to role model safe behavior.
MORE INFO. • E ars: Make sure the straps form a ‘V’ under your ears when buckled. The straps should be a little tight but comfortable. • Mouth: Open your mouth as wide as you can. Does the helmet hug your head? If not, tighten the straps.
For more information and helmet demonstrations, stop by the Sanford Children’s Safety Center at 1115 W. 41st St., Sioux Falls or call (605) 333-0663. Information provided from the Safe Kids Coalition.

THE DANGERS OF HEAT STROKE
and Your Vehicle
E
very year, young children die in vehicles due to heat stroke. How do these preventable deaths happen? Some are due to parents forgetting children are in the car, some are due to quick errands that turn into tragedies and some are due to playtime in the wrong place. An average of one child dies every 10 days from accidentally being forgotten in a hot car or having climbed into a vehicle on his or her own. That means 38 children die every year from heat-related deaths inside a vehicle. It is important for everyone to understand that these tragedies are preventable.
26
FamilyFest Resource Guide 2016
Forgetting children are in the car Knowing the dangers of heat stroke, you would never intentionally leave a child alone in a hot car, but it is easy for your mind to wander off as you drive to work. Have you ever gotten to your destination in the morning and asked yourself, how did I get here? What route did I take? Did I miss all the red lights or did I hit them all? Your mind was already busy thinking about the day ahead. If your child is asleep in the backseat and your brain is focused on the day, it’s easier to forget about your precious cargo than one might think. More than half of heat stroke tragedies happen just like this. To remind yourself to check the backseat, put something you’ll need at your next stop, like a briefcase or cell phone, next to the child safety seat. It may seem simple, but it can be a helpful reminder on a chaotic day.
HEALTH & NUTRITION
Running quick errands Did you know that temperatures can rise in a vehicle by 20 degrees in 10 minutes? With good intentions, you leave the windows cracked while you run a quick errand, but this ventilation has little effect on how fast the temperature can quickly rise inside the car. Young children are particularly at risk, as their bodies heat up three to five times faster than an adult’s.
KNOW
T: Take action. If you see a child alone in a car, take action. Call 911. Emergency personnel are trained to respond to these situations. Heat stroke-related injury and death can happen to anyone and anywhere. It could happen to you as well. How are you going to keep your loved ones safe?
Never leave your children alone in a car. Not even for a minute. Your intention of a quick errand can easily get extended when you bump into an old friend, or the person at the register has technical difficulty. Don’t let children play in the car Teach your children that playing in or around vehicles is never a good idea. Your child can crawl into the car and get trapped inside. Tragedy can strike before you even know your child is missing. Keep your car locked at all times. Safe Kids Worldwide has these simple steps to encourage everyone to ACT to prevent the tragedy of heatstroke: A: Avoid heat stroke-related injury and death by never leaving your child alone in a car, not even for a minute. Always lock your doors and trunks – even in your driveway. And keep your keys and key fobs out of the reach of kids. C: Create reminders. Place something you’ll need at your next stop - like a gym bag, cell phone or your left shoe next to the child safety seat. It may seem simple, but can be a helpful reminder on a chaotic day.

Tips For Your Pet’s
HEALTH AND HYGIENE
M
any of us would consider our furry friends as part of the family. Just like your human family members, it’s important that your pet stays clean and healthy. Here are a few tips from Your Pet Stop on how to ensure your pet stays in top condition. Trimming Nails Be sure you start clipping your pet’s nails at a young age, this way they’ll be used to it when they’re older. After you’ve got a firm grip on your animal, locate the blood vessel that runs down the nails, this is commonly referred to as the “quick.” Avoid cutting the quick while trimming each nail at a forty-five degree angle. Cleaning Ears Peroxide is harmful to animals, it can cause burning and damage to your pet’s ears. When cleaning ears, be sure to get an ear wash formulated for pets. Soak a cotton ball with the wash and squeeze out the excess. Gently rub the cotton ball up and down in your pet’s ear. Afterwards, give your pet time to shake in order stop ear infections. Fur Brushes For the best results, it’s useful to have the right brush for your pet: • Slicker brushes are best on medium, long, or curly haired pets to remove mats.
• Rakes are good for getting deep into thick coats to remove tangles and dead skin. Use them with minimal pressure on thick-coated dogs. • Bristle brushes work best on shorthaired animals that shed a lot. They remove loose hair and stimulate hair growth. • Pin brushes can pick up loose hair before it sheds onto the furniture, but are generally not very beneficial. Dental Health A healthy diet, chew toys, and regularly brushing your pet’s teeth will keep their mouth healthy. Get yourself a toothbrush and toothpaste made specifically for animals, and brush your pet’s teeth on a daily basis. Remove added sugars from your animal’s diet. Many cheap brands of pet food are guilty of adding sugar to make their food more appealing to your animal. Lastly, it doesn’t matter if you have a cat or a dog; chew toys make your animal’s teeth strong, reduce stress, and prevent boredom.

MAKING YOUR MARRIAGE WORK: 7 Helpful Principles FROM JOHN GOTTMAN
I
n The Seven Principles for Making Marriage Work, John Gottman, Ph.D, a renowned clinical psychologist and marriage researcher, reveals what successful relationships look like and features valuable activities to help couples strengthen their relationships.
2. “Nurture and deepen your fondness and admiration.” Strong coupleships are built on respect and a sense of positive understanding for one another. Fondness and admiration are critical to couple strength. Gottman believes that without these components a marriage cannot survive.
Below are his seven principles for building a strong “marital house,” along with helpful applications.
3. “Invite and allow your partner to influence you.” Strong coupleships are built on the reality of differences in perspective.Your partner’s sense of value increases if you seek their opinion on important matters.
1. “Enhance and develop your love maps.” Marital satisfaction is found in the details. According to Gottman, couples that are aware of their partner’s world have richly developed love maps. Each partner has heartfelt knowledge of whom they’ve married – i.e. they know each other’s favorite things, stressors, dreams and future desires.
36
FamilyFest Resource Guide 2016
4. “Work at turning toward one another rather than away.” Coupleships that work, survive by hard work. It’s the behind-the-scenes details that help build a strong “marital house.”Turning toward one another is easy when it’s good and/or new, but it’s strength-building when you turn toward one another when it’s bad, difficult
YOUR FAMILY
or when you’re vulnerable. Remember, you’re building passion, connection and goodwill each time you exercise this muscle. Turning toward your partner in the difficult times is like adding cash to your emotional savings account. As a matter of fact, Gottman uses the term: “Emotional bank account,” to describe the long term, collected experiences each couple has – you want your account in the black rather than the red. 5. “Work only on your soluble problems.” I was surprised by this principle – I thought the best couples were problem or fight free. The best couples fight just like the worst couples – but the best couples have determined which fights are about things they can solve together and which hassles are perpetual and probably can’t be resolved for various reasons. When problem solving, remember the following: • Soften your start up. • Make and receive your partner’s repair attempts. • Soothe yourself and then your partner. • Work to compromise. • Accepting your flaws allows you to accept your partner’s.
GROW
In other words, there’s a hole in your love map. Strong coupleships help and facilitate one another’s dreams. 7. “Create and facilitate shared meaning.” Strong relationships aren’t just about cleaning, paying bills, structuring and loving. Strong couples take time to invest in the spiritual dimensions of their lives as well – Gottman calls this shared meaning. Make your marriage work by doing the things that will pay dividends in the long haul! Dr. J.C. Chambers is a licensed psychologist who works at Stronghold Counseling Services. He is also a clinical member of American Association of Marriage & Family Therapist.

6. “Work to overcome gridlock.” You want to move from traffic jam-like gridlock to meaningful dialogue. Perpetual problems are a clear sign of unfulfilled dreams.

Every Child
E
IS A BLESSING
very child is a blessing. As my husband and I began our adoption journey, we knew that; we embraced that. However, with China’s adoption program changing, we had an important decision to make. Did we want to wait several years for a healthy, “perfect” child, or were we willing to take the special needs route? We had concerns and reservations. We wondered and worried about what the reality of having a child with special needs would be. We questioned how our lives would be impacted daily. At first glance, the prospect of adopting a differently-abled child seemed scary, difficult and possibly burdensome. And there is no doubt that this could be the case. However, that can be the case with any child. We reminded ourselves that every child is a blessing and took a leap of faith. We chose the special needs path and we are grateful daily for that decision! We have since been privileged to experience firsthand what raising a child with a special need is like. It is challenging, exhausting, rewarding, fulfilling and fun – generally no different than raising a child without any special need. Our son, Aiden, adopted when he was a little over two years old, is happy and smart. He is clever, sweet, athletic and frequently mischievous. Oh, and he’s deaf. It is an important part of his identity, but it doesn’t define him. He is a typical 7½ year old boy. He loves to play sports, be with friends and play on his iPad. He enjoys Legos, toy cars, school and being with his family. Yes, there
38
FamilyFest Resource Guide 2016
are considerations to be taken into account and instances when people need to be educated about his needs, but those circumstances are far from being burdens and pale in comparison to the happiness and fulfillment he brings to our lives. Our son has opened up a whole new world to us. We have been privileged to meet wonderful people; we have started to learn a new language; we are being welcomed into a beautiful culture previously unknown to us. What a much darker, sadder, more boring place our world would be without this “special needs” child. Yes, in the simplest of terms, we did take the special needs path, but we also took the path to the perfect child. Our son is in fact perfect: perfectly made, perfect for our family. We have also learned that when speaking of our son or any child who is differently-abled, the term “special needs” really ought to simply be special. Like we have taught our son, everybody is different; everybody is unique, and that is what makes us who we are. That is what makes us all special! Ease the Pain
OF COLLEGE COSTS WITH A 529 PLAN
O
ne expense that affects millions of American families has been accelerating at about two times the rate of inflation since 1976—college costs. Unfortunately, this increase has far outpaced most families’ income gains, putting parents in a painful bind and burdening students. In 2014, total student-loan debt skyrocketed to more than $1.2 trillion. Luckily, a 529 college savings plan can help. Named after Section 529 of the Internal Revenue Code, it is a taxadvantaged savings account that is among the most powerful tools available to parents or grandparents funding a loved one’s higher education.

One of the benefits of a 529 plan account is the money you earn in the plan is not subject to federal or state income taxes, as long as it remains in the plan. This can help your account grow faster since all of your earnings can be reinvested, increasing returns with tax-free compounding. Upon withdrawal, no taxes are due to the federal government, or to most states, when the money is applied to a qualified expense. Qualified expenses include tuition, room and board, books, supplies, fees, computer and additional required equipment. Your withdrawal proceeds can be used at colleges, graduate schools, universities, trade schools, private and public institutions, and in-state and out-of-state schools.
A 529 plan account also helps your estate planning with favorable financial-aid treatment and accelerated gifting, plus the account owner always retains control over the beneficiary’s account. Most plans also have a high contribution limit, and there is no limit on who can contribute or when proceeds need to be withdrawn. If you, or someone you know, are considering saving for higher-education costs, take a close look at a 529 college savings plan. It can’t guarantee your favorite student an A in economics but it can help you take some of the pain out of college costs. Investors should consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses of any 529 savings program before investing. This and other information is contained in the 529 plan disclosure statement. They should be read carefully before investing and can be obtained by contacting your financial advisor. FOR COLLEGE
ou want to make sure your student is prepared for life after high school, but you are not sure how to start the conversation or if your student is even old enough for it to be a concern yet. By thinking about starting the conversations about postsecondary education, you are already taking a step in the right direction. It is never too early to start talking about college and there are plenty of ways to start the conversation, no matter the age of your students. For younger students, you can start by talking about the jobs and careers of people they encounter every day and the type of postsecondary education needed to work in those areas. Encourage your students to ask family members, teachers, and family friends about their college experience and how they decided on their career path. Ask your student what his or her dreams are and what they want to be when they grow up, then go to the library or search the internet together to find out more about how people begin working in those jobs. Help your student start a savings account and encourage them to use part of any money they earn through allowance or receive as a gift to start saving for college. As your student gets older, you can get more specific in your conversations surrounding plans after high school. Encourage your student to enroll in Algebra in 8th grade to ensure that they will be on track with their math courses to take the ACT during their junior year of high school. Start using SDMyLife for career and interest exploration, and encourage your student to get involved in extracurricular
activities. To ensure that your student is on track to qualify for a variety of scholarships, including the Opportunity Scholarship, encourage them to take rigorous coursework through high school, including four years of math, science, and social studies. For upperclassmen, make sure your student stays focused and maintains a rigorous course load through graduation to maintain academic momentum. Help your student explore options like Advanced Placement (AP) and dual credit to help them get ahead on their college coursework. Encourage your student to take the ACT during their junior year so they have time to earn the scores they want before admissions applications are due in the fall. Upperclassmen should also continue their career exploration through internships, job shadowing, and/or part-time employment. These experiences help to build their resumes, create mentoring relationships, and help to choose a plan of study upon entering college. It is never too early, or too late, to start talking about college. No matter the age of your student, there are things you can do together to help plant the seed and carry the conversation forward.
