AQABA SEASONS Summer Issue 10 -2014
BEYOND AQABA
AQABA SEASONS 1
Discover Hikes Many trails in Jordan neither tourists nor locals know much about, which offer the opportunity for some incredible hiking and off-the-beaten-path adventures. Check out our favourites, most of which can be arranged as day trips from Aqaba.
Remember to keep in mind 1. Petra Monastery to Little Petra
After getting to the Monastery (which itself requires a hike, as the Monastery is located inside the Park and is usually reached by starting at the main Visitors’ Centre. It also requires summiting 730 ancient stone steps), you can walk onwards to Little Petra, rather than turning back towards the visitors’ centre. After passing the Monastery, head towards the junction, which should take about an hour. To the right lies the trail back to the restaurants near the steps of the Monastery and the museum. To the left lies the trail to Little Petra, heading north and following vague vehicle tracks. The distance between this junction and Little Petra is about six kilometres. What will you find at Little Petra? This historical site served as a “suburb” for the main city of Petra, and today you can see some remaining dams and cisterns.
• A “moderate” hike for adults may be more difficult for little kids. • Don’t underestimate the power of the summer sun, especially in Wadi Rum, where shade may be hard to come by.
The trail itself is beautiful, and being located in Siq Al Barid (the Cold Siq), can offer a respite from the heat.
Helpful to know • You must arrange your own transportation back to Little Petra • A GPS or guide is highly recommended once you depart the Monastery • Petra is a 128 kilometre drive from Aqaba
AQABA SEASONS 2 2. Al Rumaneh Camp/ Rumaneh Mountain Trail
Wadi Rum and near the border with Saudi Arabia, Jabal Um Ad Dami provides summit views at an elevation of approximately 1,850 metres. Surprisingly, the ascent is not particularly difficult, taking about two hours and involving very little scrambling. Naturally, given the incline involved, it does require being in decent shape. The view from the top shows largely isolation and empty landscape, but you can even see the Gulf of Aqaba from 45 kilometres away! The geology in this area is particularly striking, and the drive alone is worth the trip.
Helpful to know • The campground and reserve are open 1 March to 31 October • The Rumaneh Campground is a 136 kilometre drive from Aqaba
Helpful to know • You can park at the base of the mountain • 4X4 drive is required. Bedouin trip outfitters can help you arrange this • There are no services near the trail, so make sure you bring everything you want with you • Be mindful of the heat!
The Rumaneh Mountain Trail begins at the Rummana Campground, located near Dana Village. The campground is run by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (RSCN), and if you decide to extend your day trip overnight, you can stay within the campground, camp on your own outside the reserve or stay at a hotel in Dana Village. The trail runs in a circle, and is relatively short (three and a half kilometres). While steep (you’ll be summiting the top), the trail is clear and not difficult. You do not need either a GPS or a guide.
3. Wadi Ghweir Trail to Feynan
Grant and Massen describe this trail as “possibly the most spectacular hike in Jordan.” You will walk through a wadi and a three kilometre Siq filled with water while enjoying striking tropical flora and even some fauna (frogs and freshwater crabs)! The hike requires a full day of walking (an eight hour 15 kilometre walk) over some very challenging terrain and arrives eventually at Feynan Eco Lodge. Or, you can choose to pitch camp along the trail. The end of the hike will take you by the Feynan ruins as well as a very basic village. At the end, of course, awaits the Feynan Eco Lodge, hailed as one of the best 25 ecolodges in the world by National Geographic Traveler Magazine. Helpful to know • A GPS or guide is recommended for this trail • The trail is linear, which means you have to think about transportation (the best option is to park at Feynan and then arrange a drop off at the start of the trail) • The start of the trail is about 170 kilometres from Aqaba. You will first head towards the Shobak Castle, and then head for the town of Mansura (but turn right before entering) • If you do leave your car at Ghuweir, there is some space for parking cars. It is recommended you leave a note in the windshield stating you are on a hike (to avoid suspicion from the Tourist Police)
4. Adami Trail (Jabal Um Dami)
Jordan’s tallest mountain, which is located inside
5. Wadi Rum – Lawrence of Arabia spring
This pleasant short hike from the parking lot in Wadi Rum village will take you to the actual spring that TE Lawrence visited (not the same thing as the “Lawrence Spring” south of Wadi Rum village). There are shallow, paved steps carved into the hillside along the path to the spring to help you reach your destination, and there is even a picnic area near the top of the path. This trail will also take you by the Nabatean temple, which you can stop to explore. Once you reach the actual spring, follow the trail onwards along the water toward a wonderful view. Helpful to know • Wadi Rum is located approximately 60 kilometres from Aqaba • All trails in the Wadi Rum Reserve require the purchase of an entrance ticket • Wadi Rum Village is also located inside the reserve, about seven kilometres after the Visitors’ Centre For more about hiking in Jordan, check out Dr Gregory F. Maasen and Chris Grant’s Hiking in Jordan: Trails in and around Petra, Wadi Rum, Wadi Mujib, Wadi Araba, Rahma, and the Dead Sea. Available in paperback and via PDF and Amazon Kindle, this guide offers maps, GPS tracks, videos, and trail descriptions to help you plan outdoor trips across Jordan.

5 THINGS TO DO IN AQABA 4. Explore Aqaba’s diverse and stunning places of worship
The Masjid Al-Sharif Al-Hussein Bin Ali is a stunning structure that makes for a particularly remarkable sight at sunset. It features the largest dome in Jordan and is ornamented with intricate geometrical decorations. Next, check out the Church of Stella Maris, an extremely modern building notable for its sharp geometric roof and abundance of natural light. Outside the city centre, travel to Masjid Sheikh Zayed, and enjoy the colours, textures, and shapes integrated into the design, while also taking in the panoramic view of the Gulf of Aqaba.
3. Mingle!
Reach out and meet local people in the iconic Aqaba spaces. Try heading to the harbour before sunset to watch the Aqabawi fishermen return home with the day’s catch. You are sure to find yourself in good company and can strike up conversation with fellow spectators as well as the fishermen themselves.
1. Hop on an open bus touR
Don’t feel like walking? No problem! Give your feet a break while enjoying the breeze as you roll through the city’s major sites and attractions by bus. Different routes and times are available, including a 45 minute ride that covers the city centre and market and 90 minute ride that covers the city centre and south beach.
2. Create your own informal culinary tour by sampling the many delicious street eats around Aqaba Grab a shawerma sandwich (beef or chicken). Or, go for falafel, hummus and foul, all of which can be taken in to-go containers or made into sandwiches, which are usually served with tahini and veggies. Since you are in Aqaba, why not treat yourself to a fish sandwich!? If you find yourself down south during the warmer months, order lemon and mint juice, which is quite popular in Jordan and is often served with or without crushed ice. You can also beat the heat with treats from local ice cream cafes. Be sure to try pistachio ice cream!
5. Step back in time, tracing Aqaba’s rich history All of the major historical attractions are conveniently located within the city centre, and you can travel to all of the sites by foot. Start your tour with the remains of the ancient Islamic city of Ayla. Then explore the ruins of a fourth century byzantine church, which is quite possibly one of the world’s oldest known purpose-build places of Christian worship, predating the Church of the Holy Sepulchre and the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem. From there, continue onwards to the Mamluk Fort (Aqaba castle). While perhaps not the biggest fort you’ve ever laid eyes on, it hosted an important victory against Ottoman forces during the Great Arab Revolt of 1916. Finally, conclude your historical trip with a visit to the House (now a museum) of Sharif Hussein Bin Ali, who is famous for leading the Great Arab Revolt. Next to his house you can find the Great Arab Revolt Plaza, home to the giant Great Arab Revolt Flag. Although similar to the national flag of Jordan, the design differs slightly (no star) and was erected to commemorate the Revolt. It is so large that you can even see it from Egypt!

AQABA SEASONS 8
Aqaba by sea One of the most popular ways to enjoy Aqaba outdoors is from the beach or under the waves. The warm waters are hard to resist and the bountiful marine life makes Aqaba a prime diving site. If you’re interested in staying at surface level, snorkeling options abound or you can opt for the semi-submersible submarine for coral viewing. If you don’t fancy getting wet, take a trip in a glass bottom boat. Or, you can even descend into the watery depths on the Neptune Submarine Tour (www.facebook. com/NeptuneBoat). Or how about a beautiful cruise over to Pharaoh’s Island in Egypt to check out the local castle. But don’t forget your passport! You’ll need to book days before your trip and include a copy of your passport. When you’re done with water activities, you can return to land, relax and sunbathe at one of the beautiful sandy beaches (both public and private options) or take a walk along the shore.
Treasures Under & Beyond The Sea Aqaba is the perfect place to plan a vacation that focuses on nature. The year-round moderate climate makes it an ideal place to explore Jordan’s natural resources, flourishing hiking and adventure tourism economy, and of course, it is Jordan’s only coastal city, offering a wealth of otherwise unavailable water sports
Aqaba by land
One of the best ways to enjoy the city of Aqaba while soaking up the sun and getting your heart pumping is to go on a walking tour of the city’s major historical and cultural attractions (check out our next section on the walking tour to plan out your itinerary). Alternatively, if you’d rather focus more on nature, head over to the Aqaba Bird
Observatory (www.facebook.com/aqababirds), which is managed by the Royal Society for the Conservation of Nature (www.rscn.org.jo). The Observatory offers an educational centre, walking trails, an observatory and a garden hosting the native flora that local species depend on.
Outside the city – Petra and Wadi Rum
Two of Aqaba’s most famous attractions lie not in the city itself but approximately an hour to the east and northeast – Wadi Rum and Petra. Both of these national treasures, the vast expanses of nearly untouched desert and the astonishing remains of the ancient Nabatean civilisation can be explored through day trips, or you can choose to stay in a variety of accommodations within either site (hotels, base camps with tents, camping under the stars). Within both the Wadi Rum protected area and Petra (as well as within the Petra Archaeological Park) you can find numerous hiking options, including day trips and overnight treks. There are many different tourism companies working within Petra and Wadi Rum and Aqaba-based hotels may also organise trips directly, often in partnership with local tribes. Additionally, there are Amman-based outdoor groups that run weekend group trips or can develop longer itineraries for couples and groups, utilising local homestays, camping and Bed & Breakfasts.
