A guide to foot care for kids by Rachael of The Little Shoe Company (a member of The Society of Shoe Fitters & The Children’s Foot Health Register) One of the most important yet most abused parts of the body is our feet. Many foot and back problems in later life are caused by wearing ill-fitting shoes as a child. From birth to early teens feet are at their most vulnerable, in fact, there are 26 bones in the foot and they do not completely ossify (harden) until around the age of eighteen. A child is ready for their first pair of shoes ‘when the child is walking most of the day and wants to walk outside’. At that time the child needs a pair of shoes to protect his or her feet. Have your child’s feet measured and shoes checked by a qualified shoe fitter every 6-8 weeks (0-5 years) and every 10-12 weeks thereafter. They will not necessarily need new shoes every time. A qualified shoe fitter will not sell a pair of shoes unless needed and will be happy to measure and advise accordingly. Their fitting gauge is only a guide and a good fitter interprets the correct shoe for the shape of the foot. Buy footwear made of natural materials eg. Leather, cotton etc. as these materials breathe and mould to the foot. Never hand shoes down. They take on the shape of the previous wearer – they will rub and not support in vital areas and can harbour infections. Buy cotton or wool socks, and check seams for a “casting-off” knot that can rub toes. Socks and baby-grows that are too small at the toes will restrict growth and circulation. 4 limes, juice only 2 tsp fajita seasoning 4 spring onions, ﬁnely sliced 1 fat garlic clove, crushed

METHOD:

Grown-ups: Put the chicken and marinade ingredients in a bowl and cover. Put in the fridge for at least two hours.

2. Children: If your children are 5 or over, you can get them to roughly chop the pepper, roasted pepper, apple and tomatoes for the salsa using a good quality ﬁrm plastic knife or cutlery knife. Otherwise do this yourself. Younger children can pick the leaves from the coriander and mix them into the salsa.

3. Grown-ups: Tip the salsa ingredients into a food processor, along with the lime juice and a little seasoning and pulse until ﬁnely chopped. Take out 2 large spoons of the mixture for younger children, then add chilli sauce, if using, and pulse again to combine.

4. Children: Squeeze or spoon the avocado into a bowl and use a potato masher to mash it. Stir in the lime juice and some black pepper with a spoon. 5. Grown-ups: Heat a little olive oil in a frying pan and pour the contents of the chicken bowl into the pan. Cook for 5- 8 minutes or until the chicken chunks are cooked through. 6. Children: Put the grated cheese, salsa (for grown-ups and

children), guacamole and sour cream in separate colourful bowls to put on the table.

7. Grown-ups: Heat the tortillas according to the pack instructions and put the cooked chicken in a bowl. Show children how to ﬁll and roll their tortilla.

8. Children: Lay out your tortilla, choose your toppings, roll them up and eat!

The Tumble Tots programme consists of five age-related classes tailored to suit the various stages of a child’s development, with activities and apparatus to reflect this. The wooden and foam equipment used in the classes has been specially designed for little people to not only be bright, colourful and fun, but to challenge and develop children’s physical abilities. Tumble Tots was first created by former British Olympic gymnastics coach, Bill Cosgrave, who identified that children joining his gymnastics programme had already started to lose fundamental movement skills to take part, such as agility, balance and co-ordination. Bill therefore developed special classes to teach children these basic but important skills. This then evolved into the progressive physical play programme that we know and love today, teaching far more than just agility and climbing, but also ‘Skills for Life’. When Dorothy gets her wish of escaping her dull Kansas farm-life, it brings her to a world she could have only imagined. Filled with munchkins, witches, and even flying monkeys, this wondrous new place is bright and exciting, but it isn’t home. With her new friends, Dorothy sets out to ask the all-powerful wizard to help her, help them all, return to who they really are inside. The New Youth Theatre concept is simple.
