What’s On This Summer
MARVELLOUS MAKERS - SUMMER READING CHALLENGE 2024
If you want to ensure your child continues their reading journey over the summer holidays then look no further than the Summer Reading Challenge, designed by The Reading Agency, delivered by libraries. Created in partnership with the charity Create, the theme this year is ‘Marvellous Makers’. A celebration of the Creative Arts, children will be inspired to express themselves in creative ways, tap into a world of imagination and storytelling and - of course - to read! From dance to drawing, junk modelling to music, photography to creating scrapbooks, the possibilities are endless. All children aged 4 -11 will be able to sign up for the challenge at their local library for free from Saturday 6th July. The aim of the challenge is to keep children reading over the summer holidays when there can sometimes be a ‘reading dip’. Children can set their own goals, but to complete the challenge they will need to read 6 books before Saturday 14th September. Younger children can join in with the Mini Challenge, aimed at anyone 3 years and younger. Children will need to be a member of the library to participate, but joining the library is free and can be done online or in your local branch. There are lots of reading formats to keep children interested. Fact books, stories, poetry, graphic novels, ebooks, joke books and audiobooks – it’s all reading! When they have finished their books, children can tell library staff what they’ve been reading and receive rewards for how far they’ve come. Children who manage to read 6 books will receive a certificate and a medal.
The Challenge is suitable for all reading abilities, so head along to your local library on 6th July to start your summer reading journey!

GO GEOCACHING
Play hide and seek, hide containers at specific locations and then use a mobile phone or other navigational techniques to locate them. It is great for teaching kids how to read a map and improves their observation skills too!
