Welcome to the first ONLINE ONLY Mid Surrey Family Grapevine. I have been printing 3 times a year for nearly 23 years and also putting a copy of the magazine on my website. Not to have a printed magazine is very much a depart from the norm. The situation is changing constantly, so please take that into consideration when reading through this magazine. The majority of advertisers have had to put their businesses on hold, but if they are not already up and running, they are hopeful of restarting as soon as they get the green light. That doesn't mean you can't contact them! All advertisers in the magazine have been linked to their respective websites. All you have to do is click on the advert web address. Many are taking bookings for whenever they start up again, so please register your interest as soon as possible. All phone listings are on this website in the Local Directory. Checking this information is an ongoing job and although I have continued with this, many people have not been contactable. Contacts change and it will be a while before I can update them all. Whilst the Family Grapevine is a local magazine, in this issue I have included information that may be based out of area or online only, to try and give a variety of information to readers. Backflips, banana bread and sign language: How Brits have spent time in lockdown and beyond... The internet has been awash with people sharing new tricks they've been trying to learn with all the extra time they have had on their hands. The public searched for skills on Google ranging from the light-hearted “learn how to backflip” to the more cerebral “how to learn sign language”. Sign language gets the thumbs up from Brits. Since the beginning of isolation, there has been a significant rise in people searching how to learn a new language. Interestingly, whilst “how to learn French” and “how to learn Spanish” prove popular, the most searched for was “how to learn sign language”. There has also been a rise in the number of people asking, “how to learn Welsh”. Public go bananas for baking The nation went baking mad whilst placed in isolation! It seems the public turned to comfort food more so than healthy food. Baking, however, has proved to be the most popular type of cooking, with the top five searched for recipe terms being; “pancake recipe”, “banana bread recipe”, “bread recipe”, “scone recipe”, “flapjack recipe”. With that in mind it seems likely there will be a big spike in people searching for their local dentist once lockdown is over! And ...did you actually manage to buy any flour! Surge in self-sufficient Brits seeking spuds British gardening habits shows a dramatic increase in the numbers of people looking to grow their own fruit and veg in the face of the COVID-19 shutdown. ‘How to grow potatoes, onions, carrots and tomatoes', have been most popular google searches, so it’s obvious to see which larder staples Brits don’t want to face dinner without. There has also been a dramatic spike in people searching how to grow their own avocados! Add a tropical twist to what people want growing in their gardens, Watermelon and Pineapple have also proved popular. Regardless of our individual taste, gardening is a wonderful past time for the whole family. Hopefully this will continue in the 'new normal'.

4 wholewheat pitta breads 4 tsp sun-dried tomato purée 3 ripe plum tomatoes, diced 1 shallot, thinly sliced 85g chorizo, diced (or similar and less spicy) 50g mature cheddar, grated A few basil leaves, if you like Method Heat oven to 200C/180C fan/gas 6 and put a baking sheet inside to heat up. Spread each pitta with 1 tsp purée. Top with the tomatoes, shallot, chorizo and cheddar. Place on the hot sheet and bake for 10 mins until the pittas are crisp, the cheese has melted and the chorizo has frazzled edges. Scatter with basil, if you like, and serve with a green salad. COMPLEMENTARY VIRTUAL DAY RETREATS FOR PARENTS AND BABY This time last year, I gave birth to my amazing baby boy. I was facing the obvious anxieties given I was a first time Mum and also at 43, an older Mum. As was the norm, my partner was present and during labour I had the support of both my Mum and Motherin-law. Fast forward twelve months and I know for me personally, giving birth during the Covid 19 lockdown would have introduced awhole new level of stress and anxiety - before birth, during and after. Having your partner with you when you arrive with some trepidation to the all-important scans provides obvious comfort. Although we were blessed with a very content baby, I was also blessed to escape any real postnatal depression. When the inevitable baby blues did hit for a few days our families immediately rallied and walks with long talks helped to lift the darker emotions.Yes, we are all grateful for technology and the ability to keep in touch virtually, but it was so important for me to visit and be visited by my family during and post pregnancy, the lack of this physicality would have been a real strain on my mental wellbeing. Given the lack of available day retreats catering for parent and baby, I qualified as a baby yoga and baby massage instructor and launched the Chilled Out Bubba day retreat. Focused on baby led activities with gentle baby yoga exercises, baby massage and a relaxation treatment for parents, the goal is to enable parent, with baby, to restore, refresh and recover. With the likelihood that social distancing will be in place for some time to come and with new Mums obviously struggling to cope, my parent and baby retreat is now available online. I invite parents to take part in a morning baby yoga session, a lunchtime guided mindfulness for a walk they may take, followed by an afternoon of baby massage culminating in a relaxation session. Guests will have breaks where they are free to have a good natter or if preferred they can sign off and rejoin later. Where it’s probable that maternity pay is already impacting households, many will now be facing further strains resulting from the Covid 19 restrictions. Appreciating that a cost, not matter how small, may not be easily justified, there will be no charge for all guests who join our online retreats. Classroom News New Beginnings By Jane Chappell The start of this impending academic year will be like no other. As a teacher, the start of any new term sees me giddy with a mix of excitement and nerves; this year, I expect those feelings will be heightened for us all - teachers, parents and children alike. Many parents will be glad to see the back of 'learning from home', but I imagine most will reflect and be thankful for the opportunity they had to experience it. Many of us have been gifted with a fascinating insight to the complexities of the curriculum and how much support our children need to get through it unscathed. Regardless of how we feel, one thing is for sure - we all learned a lot! Lockdown or no lockdown, "Parents are the first and most enduring educators of their children." * It is clear then, we will still be pivotal in our children's educational development when lockdown is a dim and distant memory. What a relief it will be though to take on the role of supporting actor once again, instead of lead, director, producer, head of props and cleaner rolled into one! I trained as a teacher after I'd had my children, and (in the process) I learned so many things I wish I had known before - it would have made my life so much easier! I remember, when I trained, I was knocked sideways by the depth and breadth of the curriculum. I recall my qualified colleagues reeling from a recent curriculum overhaul; it was fair to say the new curriculum had shaken the profession to its core. They were grappling with an influx of new targets and assessment criteria. I was struggling with the lot - old and new. If I was struggling, I wondered what it must have been like for the children... No wonder so many of them were stressed and overwhelmed! How could we expect parents to support this learning? I remember being acutely aware of a chasm that was opening up between the school desk and the kitchen table. Those feelings never left me, and (a few years ago) they inspired me to write a book - I was compelled to share the secrets I’d discovered and go some way towards closing that scary, ever widening chasm.
